Food for thought: The SPR team is pretty eclectic as far as supernatural solutions go. They've got religious figures, people with psychic abilities, researchers. Any ghost they come across, they're pretty much set.
But forget supernatural causes for the hauntings a moment and go back to the first case where it was just a creaky building sinking into the earth. That can't be the only time that ever happened, so now I'm imagining the whole team has an interesting medley of random certifications and educational backgrounds just to make up for the various natural explanations they encounter.
Old pipework leaking water into the ground could also cause a building to sink. Maybe the soil the house was built on is just terrible at draining moisture. There could be a lot of reasons a house is sinking.
I'm imagining someone on Naru's payroll is a certified building inspector. (That takes roughly two semesters.)
Scratching noises and knocking sounds? Could be small animals or other pests, so someone also has a pest control certification? (Three months course.)
They have a lot of electrical equipment that could be a potential hazard. Somebody on the team could be a fire safety officer.
With the advent of the internet ('cause Ghost Hunt takes place in the 90s?) becoming more popular, someone on the team is now the IT person.
All of them probably have CPR and BLS training. Ayako probably just decided to become a certified trainer just to cut out the middle man. Right in the middle of an investigation, she just pulls out the dummy and workbooks and says, "All right, Mai and John get over here. Both of you are due to renew your CPR training."
Yasu probably went to law school just so he could be the company's attorney when the situation arose. (Also, great fallback plan. He would be the most aggravating lawyer ever.)
...
Just saying, if Mai or Yasu are moving on from the ghost hunting scene, they don't even need to put paranormal researcher on their resume.
"Miss, can you tell us why you have so many unrelated certifications on your CV?"
"...I had an...interesting career in my teens and twenties."

For the people who follow me for the occasional Ghost Hunt stuff: I have a thing brewing about how every main adult character (Hosho, Ayako, Madoka and Lin) are meant to represent how being a Weird Adult is so worth it if you can survive being a Weird Kid in an insanely conservative, collectivist society and culture-- with a deep focus on Hosho, Mai and Yasu. If there is any one core theme you can follow through every book and how the characters bond and interact, it's how worth it is to stand out and stick to your guns on it because you will always find other Weird Adults as you grow up and it's the most amazing feeling.

My Top YasuBou moments
Okay so there are the obvious flirty moments that get ~no homo'd~ in canon, and the Those Two Guys moments where they're just riffing on each other, but a lot of my favorite moments between them are the ones that hint at something more serious, the trust and admiration between them, so without further ado--
Tumblr media
right from the beginning!! this Very Serious moment, and everything hinges on the premise that he cares for Yasuhara. not saying it's romantic right from the start, but that's some quick bonding...
Tumblr media
(he's begging)
Tumblr media
"it was really, really difficult" but he did it, he left a whole-ass job behind because Bou-san relies on him
Tumblr media
listen I also love the panels before and after this--Bou-san making light of his injuries at first to avoid alarming people, and then both of them turning it into a joke to lighten the mood. but I also love that quiet, serious moment in between.
Tumblr media
AND THIS ONE. it's practically Yasuhara's m.o. at this point, the light-hearted insistance on getting his own way, and I love 1) Bou-san's aggravation because he totally recognizes it and he's aggravated at being a target and concerned for Yasuhara's safety, 2) the very Married storming off "do whatever you want!" and 3) again that shift to seriousness. Bou-san is trying to protect him by keeping him from going down to the sea cave, and he's just like nope, nope, I'm protecting you this time.
Tumblr media
posted this the other day--Dad 1 getting annoyed at the kids' bickering, Dad 2 soothing him because that's just what they're like, dear, let them blow off steam
Tumblr media
I love this totally in-sync joint interrogation. Yasuhara gets the ball rolling by drawing Naru in, then Bou-san takes over.
Tumblr media
"you're a perfect flirter. always works on me."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
bonus: still waiting on a non-flirtatious reason for that flower changing hands...

After some reflection on why I gravitate towards certain characters, I've narrowed my favorites into three archetypes:
(Note: These are not all of my favorites; just the immediate suspects who come to mind right now.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A snarky bitch
(With exceptions. This sort of character does have a fine line between a delightful smart ass and someone who's just mean.)
...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Someone who's living in the madness of their own mind
(However which way that manifests.)
...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Characters who just have confidence or straight-up audacity and/or are past the point of giving a shit for whatever reason
(I'm aware insecurity is a big part of Shizuo's character, but the guy also has boundaries he's not shy about enforcing.)
...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Or characters who are some bizarre combination of all three
(Or have traces of those three elements.)
Yes, Allen belongs in this final category because, while a sweetheart, he will still blackmail his allies, cheat at cards and publicly humiliate his opponents, and is a occasionally snarky little shit.
...
Disclaimer: None of this is to say I don't enjoy the badasses like Vi, or wholesome characters like Celty or Sypha, or the cinnamon roll, heart full of rainbows, 'can do no wrong' type of characters like Deku. They just don't entertain me half as much as the lineup pictured above.
You also may have noticed that some of these characters are straight up really awful people. (Izaya in my opinion being the worst cause he doesn't even have the paper thin excuse of a tragic backstory.) Being entertained by fictional characters and condoning what they do are two separate matters. I condone nothing; these people are monsters. Sometimes you want to hand them a blanket and some tea, sometimes you're just here to watch them fall, but fictional monsters are the only good kind of monsters.

Of crime punishment and mercy
read it on AO3 at https://ift.tt/kx6BhDX by trinity_of_trinities Mai taniyama never expected to get ditched by the rest of spr after naru left but it still happened, she didn't expect her friends to nearly get her set up on a date with a person who intended to harm her but they did, she never expected her psychic powers to get stronger but they did. Now she keeps astral projecting into an ability user in Russia's home base and the man is somehow tolerant of this nonsense. If only he wasn't in charge of what seems to be a growing terrorist group then they could have an easier time enjoying the rather interesting philosophical conversations with each other. (Max_sockss if you're reading this wondering why I gifted you this fic it's because I noticed you in both the bsd and ghost hunt tags and this is the first crossover between the two so I think you should get to see it.) One of the most heartfelt moments in Ghost Hunt anime for me was when Mai casually revealed she’s an orphan during Bloodstained Labyrinth arc. The VAs did great but the direction of that part in the anime also has so much impact.
The way the conversation just sprang up so naturally, but everyone else was shocked to know that she was an orphan and literally STOPPED WHAT THEY’RE DOING. At that point, many of them probably expected the opposite, but this just goes to show that Mai actually hardly talks about herself & her life. She’s so sociable, but at the same time, she doesn’t open up that easily, even to people she’s gotten closer with at work.
I love how that scene was so warm. It showed how fond everyone is of Mai tbh, more than ever when she revealed that bit. They already were fond of her but to know that she actually doesn’t live as easy a life as they thought really put to perspective the things they probably assumed about her. I think for a long time, it really was only Naru (& perhaps Lin?) who knew she’s an orphan until she revealed that to them🥺

Quite a while ago, there was a discussion between @csakuras, @thisurlplease and I about Hosho's very self-depricating humor throughout the last three Ghost Hunt novels and having just come off of Haunted Mansion and Akumu no Sumu Ie, it really sticks out like crazy. So much so that when Yasu says he white-lied to his parents about only visiting a friend in the hospital rather than also being admitted at the time, I think he's lying more to Takigawa than anyone. Yasu doesn't want him to feel guilty about what he knows Hosho sees as his several big miss-steps in Haunted Mansion.
(He agrees with Naru and pushes Ayako to do the exorcism that leads to Naru becoming possessed [moreso in the novel than the anime, where he reminds Naru that this isn't her strong suit], he feels guilty about not putting the puzzle pieces together sooner that lead to so many injuries and deaths, and to top if off he calls Yasu for help which leads to his 'young man' getting four broken ribs and septicemia.)
So of course Yasu lies and says of course his parents bought that he was just visiting a friend in the hospital when he knows there would have been phone calls to his family made that would have revealed just how paper thin that white lie was.
Sorry I just have a lot of Feels about Hosho and Yasu and how they're alike in holding themselves to high standards (without being arrogant about it like Naru is.)
