“CLARISSE! HELP! ANOTHER SPIDER!”

A long, suffering sigh sounded from the hallway, just outside the ornate office. A pale angel stepped through the double doors, forced to duck under the frame due to her height. Within the luxurious room, she saw a lone spirit cowering on the other side of a gilded desk.

“Please, Mr. Jameson,” the angel groaned, “you can just…stomp it.”

Clarisse noticed that her employer’s gaze was transfixed on a point above him. Following the spirit’s gaze up, her eyes came to rest on an enormous arachnid hanging from the ceiling.

“Please. Help,” Jameson hissed, not daring to take his eyes off the spider.

“Okay…okay. Stay still.”

Clarisse’s hands drifted to the greatsword slung over her back. She slowly unsheathed the weapon and raised it to point at the spider, which was currently focused solely on Jameson.

“Clarisse…”

“I’m working on it. Just a bit longer. Please.”

Clarisse’s blade began to glow with a soft white light. Meanwhile, the spider reared back, preparing to lunge.

“Clarisse!”

The spider leapt from its perch, but Clarisse was ready. A beam of light shot from the tip of her sword, catching the spider mid-flight. Its body flew back and landed in the corner, rolling onto its back as its legs curled in on itself. Then it finally grew still, much to Jameson’s relief.

“Phew! Thank you, Clarisse! Excellent marksmanship!”

The angel nodded, using all her willpower to suppress a satisfied smirk as she returned her sword to its sheath. “It’s my job, sir.”

“And thank you also, for your advice. I’ll, heh, keep it in mind the next time I see one of these things!”

“My…? Oh, right. Stomping. Sorry.”

Jameson kicked with a floating ethereal leg, which ended in a cloud of wispy mist, rather than anything suitable for the aforementioned stomping.

“So my advice was ill-informed. Just as well, I think, sir. I doubt it could’ve touched you anyhow, with you being…dead.”

“Nor I it! And that’s why I pay you - to brutalize them for me!”

“Right…”

[Headcanon: Although a lot of Orzhov angels did cling loyally to the Orzhova (before they were rekilled by Kaya, anyhow), far more of them basically acted - and still act - as more private bodyguards or security contractors. This was by far the more popular choice for angels joining the guild from the Boros or Gateless.]

Confusion and Fear, pt 1

The purple light trickled into the grated door of the confessional like hail, pelting her eyes. The Priestess blinked and adjusted her posture. It was getting late, probably, Mira figured. Couldn’t hide in here forever, as nice as it’d be. Her boss; The Syndics, could be furious if they found her inattentive to her duties. Her duties to the barren church, the one without any visitors today, but obligation didn’t care about semantics. But obligation to what? The people who frequented this space already had it easy. A shattered vase, paid off with few minutes worth of lashings? In Ravnica, in terms of debts to Orzhova, that was getting off easy. More than easy. They should be grateful, and free up space for the actually desperate to come in, she thought. But those bound for centuries were already absolved, by Syndics and higher. So there she was, dealing with the stragglers. People like her, she thought, who didn’t know how good they had it. She sat up, the light pecking her eye again as she heard the characteristic creaking of the door next to hers. A confession. Back to work.

“Spirits of Orzhova, my debt hangs heavy.” A shaky voice greeted. The words were uneven, but practiced.

Mira held in a sigh. She hadn’t interacted with anyone all day and wasn’t eager to start now. “What plagues your soul, my child?” Her words were kind, gentle. It was impressive how sweet she could sound while rolling her eyes.

“I saw something terrible.”

Mira thought it couldn’t be that bad. She’d had heard many stories in her job. Stories of guilt, stories of rejection.

“I witnessed a murder, spirits. It’s destroying me.”

Stories of dissection? This was newer. A dash of excitement.

“It’s not a sin to be a witness, my child.” Mira said in hushed tones.

“But I was so close to its spirits! It was in my own home, to someone very dear to me. I could’ve done something. Anything. But I hid. I can’t get the sounds out of my head, spirits. I can’t eat or sleep anymore. I need your words, spirits…”

“…” Mira thought for a moment, contemplating on the right words. But she couldn’t think of any, so she said the wrong ones. “I absolve you of what you’ve witnessed. 2 Zino.” She issued a pricetag for the foregiveness, as was customary in the church of deals. The clink of coins hitting others in the coin box was the sign this one was over.

An ostentatious hierarchy of priests, enforcers, and ghostly councilors rules over a congregation of guilt-bound loyalists, indebted ghosts, and thrull servants. Should somebody be in debt to them, that person must work off their debt even beyond death. Many Orzhov guild members believe that their actions are necessary for making Ravnica the best it can be, and they are unscrupulous in their methods of seizing power.
