Orphan’s Path is one of the most beautiful pieces of fanfiction I’ve ever read- it just /perfectly/ encapsulates the boundless creativity that was my favorite thing about the MCYT fandom. Beyond just the storytelling though- the WORLDBUILDING just astounded me. From the more story-based beats like Sky and Moon’s Landing, Lagos’s splintering, and the Manifold, to the more general MC worldbuilding like totems of undying being created via ritual, pearleye, and ofc all the new months and the longer years and the server mechanics!

There are so many worldbuilding aspects I look at and go “i don’t know how they came up with this idea but i am going to aspire to reach for this level of creativity every time I try and tackle Minecraft as a setting.” I’m sure having multiple heads to put together for ever-fresh concepts really helped too!

I was wondering- did you have any sort of..personal guidelines or jumping-off-points as to how to approach integrating things into the Orp universe? Questions you’d ask yourselves or a theme to keep in mind with each new feature you figured out? Because I’d be delighted to be able to create with the same spirit y’all did. It’s inspired me ever since I first read Orp, and I think I’ll always look to it as an example of how much you can do when you’re handed a few pieces of lore and are determined to carry it all the way home.

a lot of what you're describing for how i approach worldbuilding boils down to "yes, and?" like taking even the most innocuous offhand stuff and deciding to find ways it does work. accepting it as true in some form and figuring out how this affects other things.

and the most important thing is you have to be willing to do this even with ridiculous shit. because all jokes come from something real, and you gotta not be embarrassed about writing a story or thinking about something stupid. be willing to look at something ridiculous and go "why ISN'T this stupid" first, "why IS this stupid" second. sometimes, it really can't be anything but stupid! but if you let a silly element breathe, that's where you can find a certain meat to a story that sometimes doesn't exist anywhere else.

fear is the mind killer. cringe is also the mind killer. you gotta shank any sense of shame or embarrassment that can come with engaging the premise YOU decided to create and explore, and a huge part of that is acknowledging the implications of seemingly (or genuinely) unserious elements of something at face value. writing off a character's silly name, goofy theme song, or meme humor is easier on yourself, sure, but it's so much more interesting in the long run if you don't. the absurdity of a setting is part of the setting! don't pretend it isn't!

you CANNOT get "piglin family units dictate the societal structure of the nether" in orp without first accepting "orphans killed my parents".

Next Week's Tumblr Top 5 Will Surely Put Us All to Shame.

I love that Shane's response to hearing the next Top 5 is about 'ships is, "I'm gunning for the Lusitania". Because 1. history nerd, and 2. I keep FORGETTING HE'S A HISTORY NERD BECAUSE I SEE PROFESSOR MCNASTY AS AN ENTIRELY SEPARATE ENTITY.

In the spirit of the joke, here's my Top 5 Historic Ships:

5. The Balclutha - built in Glasgow in 1886, this three-masted full rigged ship carried cargo all around the world before finding her way to San Francisco under the care of the San Francisco Maritime National Historic Park, where she is open to the public, sometimes for shanty sings. Yes, I've sung shanties on board this ship, because of course I have. This one's a sentimental choice, one of the few good things left about my hometown.

4. The Charles W. Morgan - the last wooden whaleship still afloat, built in New Bedford in 1841 and now a National Historic Landmark at the Mystic Seaport Museum. Kinda hard to miss when you come into the harbor and it's just the absolute epitome of New England salty sea-dog vibes. Also: blubber pots.

3. The USS Constitution - yeah, some people are going to say this is a real normie pick. But you gotta hand it to her, she's beloved for a reason. Built in 1797 in Boston, this 44-gun frigate was in service protecting the US for the better part of a century before being retired from service in 1881. And she's looked good the whole time. There's something special about seeing a ship this old fire off her cannons.

2. ORP Piorun - the other ships on this list are ships you can visit today; alas, this WWII N-class was scrapped in 1955, but its legend deserves to live on. This ship's Polish crew, powered by wodka and the fire of vengeance, had the absolute brass balls to chase down the Bismarck without waiting for reinforcements. You need to hear this tale told by someone slightly drunk and meme-poisoned, so here's LazerPig.

1. The Oseberg ship - excavated from a Norwegian burial mound in 1904, this ship was made somewhere around 800CE and buried sometime after 834 with a wide variety of grave goods that have told us a lot about Viking culture at that moment in time. There's nothing quite so sexy and absolutely terrifying as the curves on a Viking ship, let alone a Viking ship that has come back from the land of the dead, so this one's an easy number one on my list.

She goes up to the surface and passes out, dragging dragged in by her weave.Now to portal 2You are still woke, maybe even more woke. You rise from your hibernation and meet an orp named Wheatley. I call him bitch. Cause he’s a bitch. B-i-c-t-h. He tells you that you have to escape with him or you both will die. So he brings you to the testing track and you go through some ez tests. Getting a portal gun and trying to find an escape pod boi.You go to the main breaker room, where Bitch accidentally turns on GLaDOS. GLaDOS is p i s s e d and murks the orp. good. She gives you a dual portal device and sends you on a new and harder testing track.Turns out the bitch is still alive and he breaks you out of the track. You devise a plan to shut down the turret and weed production lines. Which, assuming you’re not incompetent, is successful. Then you have a showdown with GLaDOS, screaming fight me. You defeat her by plugging the bitch into a wall and making him in charge. While also degrading GLaDOS by putting her into a potato… He betrays you and goes insane, sending you to the dank lairs of Apertures shit hole. You hear a man named “Cave Johnson” yell and eventually, you find Potato GLaDOS and get up to new aperture.Now it is your job to shatter every fucking screen the bitches face is on, for an achievement. Oh and also complete more tests. He tries to kill you, fails, then you clap his ass by sending him to the moon. Where he floats aimlessly with space core for all eternity.And for you/Chell? GLaDOS kicks you out of Aperture Labs and gives you a burnt compainion cube.Credits role. GLaDOS sings. You sob.So for the Portal au, the story won’t be the same, but heres a lovely refresher, maybe I’ll make a play through of it soon.
