What is bankai????

I was tempted to just leave a wiki link and make a joke, but I know the Orphan's Path audience is largely DSMP only and/or coming in blind so I'm going to take the time to explain this.

So first off, CC Ph1lza is A Known Weeb. Man likes anime.

He likes the manga/anime Bleach.

(Bleach spoilers I guess, it’s kind of an old-ish manga from the 2000s but here’s your warning anyway)

ph1lza’s minecraft skin is based of the Bleach character urahara kisuke and he makes urahara jokes about his character a good bit. (the training room he’s building under his arctic house is a joke on urahara’s training room.) 

urahara has a cane sword called benihime (hence c!philza having a sword called benihime- hiasobi benihime is one of the move names) and like. the swords in Bleach are kind of like- people’s souls or some shit? the Manifestation Of Their Fighting Spirit.

the swords are their jojo stand, okay.

and the swords (i cannot remember the specific name of the swords) have this fuckin uuuuuuh Ultimate Move called Bankai. the Bankai can be an area of effect attack, an environmental thing, changes the sword into something else, yada yada.

the bankai of benihime is like. A Massive Lady. A Giant Woman, if you will.

the bankai’s power is the ability to restructure anything it touches.

when CC!ph1lza was asked to elaborate on c!mumza, he implied it was similar to urahara’s bankai.

so i guess mumza is Canonically a world-breaking goddess lmao.

orphan’s path season 4 trivia

-Yes, both the $100,000 Dream vs Technoblade Duel and The Potato War were a) events that actually happened b) events that are canonical to the Dream SMP timeline.

-It is implied in Dream SMP canon that Sally is dead and possibly eaten by Wilbur, though this is mainly subtext.

-We made Fundy’s AFAB name Theodosia because Fundy’s initial character reveal as Wilbur’s son in DSMP canon was based on a Dear Theodosia joke. Dear Theodosia is a song from Hamilton, a musical that the early L’manburg plotline draws heavily on. The L’manburg uniforms are based off the American soldier uniforms from the musical!

-This brief animatic by Wolfy was a driving reason why I included a “proposal” scene in the final chapter of And They Danced.

-orp!philza is demiromantic! Demiromantic is an aromantic spectrum orientation in which a person generally only experiences romantic attraction to people they have a pre-existing deep emotional attachment to. Demiromantic people often think they’re just plain aro until their romantic conditions are met!

-I was really nervous about writing And They Danced despite being an arospec writer, because I wanted to really go about an arospec love story respectfully and authentically. The “romantic fixing” of aro and aro-coded characters who “find the one” in fiction is a real problem in media. Because of this, I reached out to arospec Orphan’s Path readers and mutuals across multiple Discord servers to get their input about how I wanted to approach it.

-Philza was always going to get his hair cut short but we debated when it was going to happen. At one point it was actually going to happen during the DSMP era, then it was moved to after reaping Ender, but ultimately we decided that he should have this independent of any trauma-based decision making.

-It’s hard to write Trixtin. Not that She’s a difficult character to work with, but it’s hard to balance Her as a concrete character when Her appearances by nature require being perceived by Philza or outside parties. In a lot of ways, She almost doesn’t exist unless She’s being perceived or solicited.

-Technoblade doesn’t get a lot of POV chapters in comparison to other characters because his POV is too powerful (this is only half joking).

-Dream’s backstory as an End war veteran, and an End war being why no End portal’s are left except Dream’s, has been something we’ve had in mind even as early as Snow Angel.

-Falrisesi is pretty much the head writer of orp!Dream and drove a lot of the lore surrounding the End.

-Tommy’s character being a superhuman made in a lab is DSMP canon.

-orp!Tommy is not Philza’s child- he’s a clone, but his donor parent is some random guy. Stop being excited about when they’re going to find out tommy is philza’s child. it’s not gonna happen.

-Tubbo being found in a box by Philza and accidentally calling him “dad” as a kid is DSMP canon. 

-Overall, between Tommy and Tubbo, Tubbo has a stronger canon mutual relationship with Philza, while Tommy’s is more parasocial. Expect more tubbo/philza content in the future over tommy/philza content, where orp is concerned.

-Despite Benihime’s breakdown in The Fable of Endlantis, and knowing that its current situation is better than what it had with Ender, it still has trouble really absorbing that what Ender did to it and Philza was abusive or wrong.

-Wilbur still has Sally’s totem by the end of the season.

-It was ConcoctionsFromHell’s idea to let Benihime destroy one of Dream’s dolls after Dream lost the duel.

-Since the Industrial Revolution (and resulting child labor laws) never happened in Orphan’s Path, and mandatory education still largely does not exist, the way the Orphan’s Path universe treats children is a lot more self-responsible than modern IRL. The idea that kids/teens in general should be treated more gently than adults is more recent than you think it is.

-The moon dragon egg cracked! That probably doesn’t mean anything. :)

-There was always meant to be the strong sense that like Philza’s really not meant to live. The brittle heart caught on the dance of death, he was always meant to have fallen, and the weariness of his eyes, the dance of scars on his body, they are the marks of a life past its due- he was always meant to die. (and he lives anyway. because life is hell. but there are things in life worth eternity.)

And here’s the spicy wing ref for season 6 orp!philza- at least what it looks like after the feathers grow back. benihime is just covered in eyes now. (wonder why that is. surely it has nothing to do with the last time it couldn’t protect philza in time.)

orphan’s path trivia: season 3 edition

-wilbur was originally going to be a stillborn egg that philza deliberately used his blood to save, but by Falrisesi’s input we went the route shown in orp canon.

-yes, the halfmoon bar is queer-coded.

-co-author Anarchy-Schmanarchy has written an actual research paper on systematic inequality and their input influenced the writing of arcs surrounding Halfmoon

-sally was originally written as a dream smp native that wilbur met while he was traveling with philza. she was also at one point supposed to be a fox moblin, but we changed this later on.

-in earlier planning, wilbur did not know techno and philza were gods, and this was going to be a very big point of contention between techno and phil. they would have even split up temporarily with philza and wilbur leaving.  this changed after revivebur became canon on the dream smp and we got to see wilbur interact with philza’s character more. we decided that wilbur knowingly being a demigod and feeling the need to live up to it would fit more with his arc.

-the blazeborn special, specifically how it is prepared and presented, is (loosely) based on a real drink called the cafe brulot

-when wondering how honey and philza would know each other, we jokingly decided that they met at a hardcore convention. i also had a concept that hardcore as a condition had become more rare over time. these two thoughts later developed into the line about hardcores being hunted down to be experimented on.

-honey’s Talon accent is written by ConcoctionsFromHell and based on a Texan accent. philza’s Talon accent is written based on Ph1lza’s geordie accent.

-Concotions created honey and lemon. i suggested it would be funny if philza’s greatest market nemesis and favorite bakery were married.

-Ghost and Sage are OCs from a server that Concotions and I are in, brought in when it was joked that honey adopted ghost.

-diazi is quackity’s mom. 

-there are some set pieces that are written independent of context and just worked into the story when it looks like they’d fit. philza/benihime mistaking someone for ender during a flashback due to visual triggers was one such set piece. there’s actually a lot of author’s commentary to say about that chapter specifically, but i’ll only elaborate if someone asks.

-hardcore lore development aside, the driving meta reason honey and lemon are written hardcore is because we want them to be able to harass philza across time and space.

-fun fact! in criminology, "angel of death" refers to someone, often a serial killer, who intentionally harms/kills people under their care. one of the recognized categories is one who believes their victims are suffering/beyond help. this has nothing to do with orp!philza, i just thought it was a neat fact. :)

-yes, the parallels to real world classism and gentrification are intentional. i’m very fond of the concept of “mundane horror” in fantastical settings- where the scariest, most upsetting things are not the spectacle, but uncomfortably realistic moments in-between.

-falrisesi came up with wilbur being born hardcore. wilbur was also going to originally lose his wings.

-benihime generally acts very tame/confused when outside of danger because its specialized to make instant survival judgements. it isn’t very good at evaluating social/psychological danger as a result, and thus defaults to trusting whoever/whatever philza trusts. this is actually the primary reason philza is uneasy about the idea of benihime fronting in public or in front of people it hasn’t encountered before- he’s concerned about the dangers people present to benihime just as much as the danger benihime could present to people.

-ender may have had Creepy Emotions about philza, but their relationship never had explicit/romantic undertones. philza was the “pet” and benihime was the “easy mode” of the “pet”.

-ender did a lot of things to benihime that philza doesn’t remember. i will not elaborate unless someone asks.

-originally, eret was going to be part of the caravan.

-skeppy has unusual longevity due to his diamond curse, which has become progressively more severe over time.

-originally, philza was part of the caravan.

-across all dimensions, people are buried with coins so they can pay the toll of the soul station. if they have no coin, they’ll wander around in death’s domain until they earn a coin by helping others pass on, or find an unclaimed coin (people often dedicate coins to the dead.)

-sam-seong was originally not a witch, but a noblewoman that philza had a prior affair with. we were concepting sam-seong and wilbur even as early as Moonglass.

-related to above, Philza was intended to be depicted as having a number of scattered affairs, mortal and otherwise, through his divine life, but we decided against it because his and Her relationship ended up going in a different writing direction. They’re still not quite romantically involved and never were going to be, but they’re a lot more exclusive than originally envisioned.

-Philza became closer to Her- way, way closer- after Ender’s death. this is not coincidence.

we had a whole re-write for a good deal more than "a few things i've forgotten", unfortunately. benihime has been changed to be set up from the beginning.

if you decide a rewrite meant to mitigate unintentionally ableist elements isn't worth your time, that's on you.

I really, really love benihime, i kinda headcannon the stuff that's happening as DID, sort of as a comfort thing. I hope you don't mind! ^^

it's not a one-to-one example of DID or other associated conditions, but orp!philza isn't exactly a standard singlet either.
