WILL'S PUB, ORLANDO

When Will Walker opened a pub on Orlando's N Mills Ave in 1995 he says it was soon "colonized by the music community" and almost a quarter century later remains a cornerstone of the city's indie music scene.  Now five years after local artist William Joseph Krowl, aka Dolla Short, marked the site with this mural, it also remains a fresh symbol of the venue and the neighborhood in general—at least the majority who have welcomed the influx of artists in the face of complaints about the hipsterization of the neighborhood. Originally from New Jersey, where he spent his youth painting his name in bubble letters, Dolla Short's art landed him in trouble in Orlando and now when he can't find permissioned walls to paint he spends his time transforming spaces for clients up to and including the largest of Orlando's theme parks.  @dolla_short_am7/  @thepublife/  @mills50district/

"THE FLORIDA PANTHER AND WHITE IBIS:  A story of successful land conservation and scientific intervention"

Born in Miami and now living on Florida's Space Coast, Chaya Av creates colorful and free-flowing work heavily influenced by natural organic forms. In addition to creating work for galleries and corporate clients her spontaneous stream-of-consciousness style is well suited to live painting at music festivals across the state. When Chaya was born there was widespread fear that the official state animal, the Florida Panther, would be extinct by 2017. When 2017 actually rolled around and Chaya was given an opportunity to paint this mural at Sam Flax art store on Colonial Dr in Orlando, she highlighted the hard work done to save the panther. Chaya also added the White Ibis, representing the danger and optimism in Native American folklore and as warning that we must continue to value and protect our wildlife.  @chayaav_/  @samflaxorlando/

"DIVERSITY MURAL"

In June, 2016 Pulse Nightclub in Orlando was hosting a "Latin Night" when the deadliest mass shooting by an individual was perpetrated (tragically, surpassed multiple times since), killing 49 and injuring 53. In early 2018, across the nation, in Shelton, Washington, Jennifer Kuhns worked with her high school students to create the first Diversity Mural, and in Orlando she and @LunaMosaicArts owner Cherie Bosela decided to create a companion piece in direct response to the Pulse tragedy. More than 1,000 hearts were collected by Bosela from people all over the world and the two mosaic artists have created this message of solidarity with the LGBTQIA community on the side of Lamp Shade Fair on N. “CADAVRE EXQUIS”

In 1898 seven-year-old Sam Flax arrived in the United States with a dollar in his pocket. Opening his first art supply store in New York City three decades later during the depression Flax catered to customers like Norman Rockwell and Zero Mostel. While many of the Flax stores have now disappeared Sam Flax still maintains operations in Atlanta and Orlando, and the walls of the E Colonial Dr store in Orlando serve as outdoor gallery for a handful of the areas artists, including multi-talented Chris McAlister. While concerns over a dwindling bee population have become a popular theme for artists in recent years, avid nature lover McAlister’s “Cadavre Exquis” offers an interesting new visual metaphor for the importance of bees to our very existence.  @mcalisterart/  @samflaxorlando/
