ARC REVIEW: “The Mermaid’s Voice Returns In This One” by Amanda Lovelace
Title: The Mermaid’s Voice Returns In This One Author: Amanda Lovelace Publisher: Andrews McMeel Publishing Source: Publisher Publication Date: March 5th, 2019 Format: eARC Page count: 208 (paperback edition)
Plot summary: Goodreads Choice Award-winning poet and USA TODAY bestselling author Amanda Lovelace presents the mermaid’s voice returns in this one — the third and final installment in her “women are some kind of magic” series, featuring a foreword from Lang Leav and 13 guest poems from leading voices in poetry such as Nikita Gill, KY Robinson, and Orion Carloto.
The mermaid is known for her siren song, luring bedroom-eyed sailors to their demise. However, beneath these misguided myths are tales of escapism and healing, which Lovelace weaves throughout this empowering collection of poetry, taking you on a journey from the sea to the stars. They tried to silence her once and for all, but the mermaid’s voice returns in this one.
The Mermaid’s Voice Returns In This One on Goodreads | Chapters Indigo | Amazon CA
I received an eARC from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
After absolutely loving The Witch Doesn't Burn In This One, I needed to read this collection. I was so ready for more feminist and romantic poetry. Sadly, this collection was not as good.
I think, this time, the subject matter wasn't expressed in a way that resonated with me. That, and I think maybe her poetry style just didn't work this time. It felt almost...incomplete or lacking in this collection and that made it hard for me to connect to the poems. The poems I did enjoy were often about love or reading or hopeful.
There were, however, enough poems that I liked and that saved me from not enjoying the collection. I really liked a lot of her longer, paragraph poems not only because they had more content, but because they flowed so much better. I can also see the growth in imagery and description from Lovelace's first collection to this one. A lot of the images and descriptions were stronger and flowed better than they did in her first book. I really appreciated that.
I also liked some of the poems in the final section of the book by Lovelace's poet friends. Surprisingly, a good portion of these poems were long and had a more traditional rhyme scheme which packed a powerful punch.
I wish I had loved The Mermaid’s Voice Returns In This One, but I didn't enjoy it as much as I liked her previous book.

The Importance of Instagram Poets
This past week, especially after reading Adrienne Rich and Emily Dickinson, I’ve noticed that poetry has been at the front of my mind, along with how women represent themselves and their worlds in such short, densely packed forms. Truth be told, though, poetry written by women is almost always on my mind because I follow a few of my favorite female poets on social media. I know I’m not alone, given the massive followings poets like Rupi Kaur, Yrsa Daley-Ward, and Orion Carloto (3.4M, 151k, and 549k followers, respectively, on Instagram alone). Personally, Yrsa Daley-Ward is the one whose work I look most forward to hearing from ever since I read her poetry memoir The Terrible this past summer. These women, and others, are a part of a group that people have started calling the “Instagram poets.” It’s not limited to women, or women of color, like the poets I mentioned are, but the accessibility of social media has made the genre of “Instagram poetry” a space for anyone to create.
Additionally, the accessibly of social media allows these poets’ works to be seen by virtually anyone, anywhere. People who don’t necessarily have access to classic poetry or classes where they can talk about poetry now have a direct line to real, publishing poets. Yrsa Daley-Ward put it well in an interview with the New York Times, saying “‘We are doing the poetry world a service…I think it is a wonderful thing that poets are now sharing their work online because work gets into the hands of people of different identities and they feel like they have a voice’” (Gyarkye).
What sets Instagram poets apart from people simply typing up poetry and sending it off into the internet is that “they use the platform in multiple ways: adding images to their poems, taking photos of printed text or…[even] filming their laptop screens as they write” (Gyarkye). It’s becoming a new form of poetry. And these poets write in accessible ways, too; Milk & Honey by Rupi Kaur has become one of the most popular poetry books ever sold, and is composed of short, easily understandable stanzas — no high-brow intellectual jumble (no offense to them, but not everyone has access to an education where they can learn how to sift through dense poetry). On top of all of this, in 2018, “according to a survey conducted by the National Endowment for the Arts and the U.S. Census Bureau, 28 million Americans [were] reading poetry—the highest percentage of poetry readership in almost two decades” (Hill and Yuan). It’s not a coincidence that this coincides with more poetry (and by more Instagram poets) being published in the past few years.
All of this makes me think of Audre Lorde’s essay “Poetry Is Not a Luxury.” She talks about how poetry, for black women, is symbolic; it’s survival. It’s a collective way for these women to share their thoughts and feelings. Instagram poetry is a way for them to easily connect and express. Social media platforms, according to Yrsa Daley-Ward, “‘are a beautiful way to get the work to people for whom poetry has never been acceptable. For whom poetry has always seemed like a closed door, a certain type of person, a certain class of person, gender or color even ― which is ridiculous, because words are for everyone’” (Fallon). And she’s right! Words are for everyone, sharing experiences are for everyone, and all of this should be available to everyone. Instagram poetry is allowing us to do this on a larger scale than ever. Nice!
Really quickly, I also want to geek out on Yrsa Daley-Ward. I’ve really only quoted her words here, so if that’s not a giveaway, I don’t know what is. If you ever get the chance, you HAVE to read her work. She’s a queer woman from England with Nigerian and Jamaican parents, and she writes about everything from love to authorship to mental health. I love her a lot and I think she deserves to be read by everyone :) I’ve included a post below this one linking to one of her posts - a great example of Instagram poetry, too.
