THIS! This is beautiful! You perfectly captured each of them so well! And their characterizations didn't change too much from the original so it's on point! Anyway just cuz here's my little commentary on each of them aside from them all being perfect:

Ah... MAJOR spoilers for the original and the rewrite of Zemblanity under the cut:

Ten's perfectly captures his vibe. Being the two sided serial killer with a mysterious past was hard enough to write but you really got the feeling down so well! And the bottom left picture? Perfect. It really captures Ten's overall duality in the series in terms of his subconscious. I wasn't able to capture it so much in the original, but literature is an important thing to Ten! Hopefully I do a better job in the rewrite!

Kun's! Oh my, my sweet boy. Rivals to Xiaojun's romance, the only difference is that he got his happy start, happy middle, and (at least in his ending) his happy end. Of all the characters, he was the most "homey," if that makes sense. A tragic character, truly. Sure, he had his moments, but in the end, he always had OCs happiness at heart. A devoted lover is usually met with an equally passionate fate.

On to our favorite romantic Xiaojun! Whether or not the inclusion of the car was for irony or for vibes I'll leave unanswered but it fit his back story well. There's an common foreboding in the usual monochrome aesthetic but, if you look into it enough, it's hidden romantic aspects are shown, especially in the longing sense. It was only implied, but his and OCs relationship went through its fair share of hardships and some more, how it ended is one he didn't deserve.

That quote in Yangyang's really got me right in the heart, bestie. For a character who was very trigger happy and maybe a little insane I thought it only fitting for him to have a backstory horrible enough that he hardly acknowledged it. Best Friends to Lovers, although romantic, often ends in a heartbreak. After all, although losing a lover is hard, no one talks about how hard it is to lose their best friend.

I praise Ten's duality a lot, but I gotta admit. Hendery was really fucking hard to write, and in his case (for the original) it was multiplicity, but I've decided to shrink it down to two for the rewrite for a less controversial character. Fun fact (really just a quick google search), silver often represents grace and elegance while gold represents honor and triumph. Which one of his halves that is is to your discretion, but their common thread is that they represent power in some form. Maybe they aren't that different?

Winwin! The classic soft bad boy! The classic good guy in the wrong crowd! The classic right person wrong time! The contrast between the picnic and the chains are similar to the odd comfort OC got from him despite his imprisonment. There's an odd sense of nostalgia that comes from him, like everyone had known him at one point, but they just can't remember where they saw him. Of all the characters in this series, Time seems to taunt him the most. The worst part is? It wasn't even his fault.

a bit of a break from the normal reading but how did you get the idea for this story? like,, it has so many complicated twists and turns and i just want to see your thought process of going about this story ahdfjn

Oh man, this is gonna be a long one but let me walk you through it hehe, also major spoilers for the original Zemblanity below.

Flashback to June 2nd of 2020, when Kun's Awaken teaser dropped. As soon as I saw that teaser I thought "hm, I can make a fic out of this" so I opened my little outline app thing and started outlining his character and as all the other Awaken teasers dropped I started filling in for the other members. I'll have to dig for it, but I remember making a post about it on the old blog if anyone would be interested in the concept and I got a lot of feedback so I figured sure why not. Back then Zemblanity had a completely different concept, though. I'm not joking when I tell you guys I picked apart those teasers and the MV, I even watched them slowed down to get whatever little details I could about their concept to shove it into the outline somewhere.

My original plan for it was for Sector V to be akin to an asylum, hence the specific disorders I had back then, but then I scratched that idea and instead looked to complexes. For example, I originally planned for Kun to have this sort of God Complex, I planned for Xiaojun to have a Martyr Complex and so on so forth, you can probably catch some of those hints in the original Zemblanity, though. Either way, I originally planned for the big reveal to be that they were never on the moon at all, no, and (Y/N) was one of the asylum's patients. Kun was supposed to be her main doctor, Ten was the patient she shared a room with, and so on so forth. The point of this is that Zemblanity had a dark theme since the outlinings, I just changed the plot significantly as I went around.

Onto when I actually started writing the fic. 2020 wasn't a very happy year for me, for anyone really. And this wasn't even the crux of the fic. I spent about twenty days outlining it then, June 22, 2020, I dropped the first chapter. This first chapter followed my original draft and it got a lot of attention, both good and bad. With all of the asks and replies I got, I started making changes. I went into this fic with the idea of it being strictly thriller, and I came out with some elements of romance, but despite y'all simping in my inbox for certain inmates, I remembered to go back to this fic's roots. Mystery and thriller, I had to keep you all on your toes. Then, as 2020 continued and my mental state, to put it bluntly, plummeted, I turned to Zemblanity to write out my frustrations. I've said it a couple of times before, but writing is sort of like a therapeutic thing for me. Throughout 2020 I was just angry all the time, I was so pissed, I was so lonely, I had all these emotions and no one to talk about it with so I channeled that into a fanfiction and, hey, looks like you guys liked it, haha

In the first run of Zem, I made twists for the heck of it. Xiaojun knowing everything, for example. The locket, for another. Etc, etc. But now, with that original under my belt, I'm fixing up this rewrite so that there's just so much more re-read value, the twists make sense, and the suspicions arise. I made so many huge plot changes and so many huge jumps between the year long run that it just got messy at one point and it was so far from my original outline that the final product was just different. A lot of what happens in my fics and how they end is based on everyone's asks and how they perceived the characters. Sicheng, for example, was supposed to be a much darker character but you all liked him so much so how could I ruin y'all like that? Outlining this story was a real bitch though, let me tell you, and in the end I even strayed super far away from it. All the twists and turns had to be calculated and placed correctly, and in my original plan they were, but as things changed I realized "oh shit I can't use this twist anymore" or "oh man, I might need to establish this now before it's too late" it was all a hodgepodged mess that I'm trying to fix now haha

Either way, a lot of this fic was malleable, it went through so much changes as my own mental state fluctuated all over the damn place. All I knew was that I wanted to make a fic that would be fun to read, one of those fics that you can't put down until you were done with it, and I think I did pretty good for the most part.

Idk why but when Y/N started getting sus about not remembering going to the moon, my mind went “it’s all fake they’re not on the moon. They’re on earth and the station is just a government building with screens as windows to simulate being in space. The older people remember and are told to kept quiet but once they start spilling the beans, they’re injected with an illness and called it moonshine to keep them quiet” it’s far-fetched but oh well.

Actually, you're not too far off from what I originally planned for the series. You're almost right on the dot. I think it was around Chapter 5 or 6 of the original story that I switched how the fic was going to end because of everyone's reception to the fic, but when I originally posted Zemblanity I had a completely different ending in mind (and I think you can probably tell if you read through it on Ao3 or something).

Basically, yeah. They weren't planned to be on the moon. In my original Zemblanity drafts, they were in an asylum, hence the certain illnesses. In order to keep them from acting out, they do some hypnosis psychology stuff to keep them thinking hey we're on the moon and it works for a while and good catch on moonsight! It was planned to be just as you said it would be.

But yeah, read through the original Zemblanity chapters and you'll see parts that lead up to that ending, namely the flight records. But, as this idea has been scratched and I know from the beginning that it was, I found a much better reason for certain plot holes and how they relate to the new plot!

If it’s similar to og zem, then the sixth mysterious cell is likely Ten from a different timeline. Then because of that, he’s only allowed out at certain times to get rid of confusion with the warden Ten and to prevent any weird occurrences with the timelines.

Unless Sicheng just decided he wanted an extra cell. That man is currently the most mysterious, and that’s saying something.

Oooh, interesting theory. Sicheng is a bit of a radical variable right now, as of late, his only interaction was that quick run in where he was holding one of those pages, and possibly the last one (Y/N) needs. Who knows? I mean, I do, but I can't just tell you guys, ya know?

Could be Kun, maybe, hehe, but yes. They've all gone through some character development since we last saw them, and this go around I think it would help to remember that these guys are prisoners, murderers specifically. And they've been in here for a long time now. Just wait until next Saturday, when I start posting the Warden's Notes and the Interrogation Rooms muahaha

If ch4 dream guy is Hendery based on the fact that og zem Hendery had a split personality, then his situation reminds me of Jekyll and Hyde, but also of Bruce Banner and the Hulk or good cop bad cop.

Jekyll and Hyde might be a better way to put this situation, actually. But sprinkle it with a little bit of the supernatural.

If rewrite Yang is anything like original Yang that makes his interrogation room so much sadder because the Park Hyunjoon in his timeline loved him like a son and that makes their whole exchange in the Sector so much more heartbreaking - 🐻‍❄️

Poor guy must’ve been so confused when he saw the Warden for the first time and, without a doubt, it was probably something along the lines of “Mr. Park! Thank god you’re here” and the Warden was probably a bit stand off-ish about it

1. Ah, yes, how could I forget about those two? They were a bit confusing in the original as to wether or not they were allies, so I hope this rewrite clears it up. Xiaojun is a bit of a romantic, isn't he?

2. I don't think there'll be anything in the main story specifically, but once I start dropping Warden's Notes and Interrogation Rooms they'll be mentioned here and there. Basically, one Sector is in charge of one kind of crime. Sector V, for example, is in charge of the murderers.

3. AHHHHHHH yes, our dear best friend. Keep an eye on him.

4. No more, I thought the lyrics of Moon River were more fitting for the story while keeping the motif of, ya know, the moon.

Surprised at first, it started when you moved your head quickly so he kissed your cheek instead. But he’d catch on very quickly and play along with you. Sadly, after about three hours of this game, you got tired of the game, and unfortunately for you, Kun didn��t. You really shouldn’t challenge him to things like this, he often tries to hide it, but he can get very competitive sometimes.

“What? What’s wrong? Throwing in the towel already? Fine then, come over here!”

Lee Ten

Fuming on the inside but amused on the outside. How could you consciously pretend to avoid his signs of affection? For shame. However... Everything’s always a game with him, and if Kun is only sometimes competitive then Ten is always competitive. Want to dodge his kisses? Fine, then you won’t get any until you give in first which, to his pleasure, was sooner than he had originally expected. 

“Finally done with your little game, darling? Finally, let’s make up for lost time then.”

Dong Sicheng

Lowkey kinda hurt, like why would you do that to him? But once he realizes it’s all just a game, he has some fun with it too, it all boils down to a silly game and he’s more happy that you’re playing with him than just, you know, existing. But honestly at one point he’ll probably crack and just hug you tight to him because come on Zemblanity Sicheng’s love language is physical touch.

“I know you want to play some more but... maybe we can take a quick time out?”

Huang Xuxi

Playfully competitive. You want to dodge his kisses? Fine, he’ll dodge yours then. When you try to come up to him this fucker just stands up taller, two can play at this game. Or he’ll pick up Biscuit and hide his face behind the doggo, who also mistakes this gig as a simple excuse to get extra love from his parents, and ends up playing with you both instead and whoops, you both completely forgot about the game in the first place.

“Whoa, okay, Biscuit, sit. Good boy, now that that’s over with, let’s watch something!”

Xiao Dejun

When you both entered his office for the first time that morning it was part of your unspoken of schedule to give a kiss and say goodbye, so when you completely dodged his lips and went for a fist bump Xiaojun was understandably confused. Then you dodged them for the rest of the day and don’t pretend that he didn’t notice the sly smile on your face when you’d do so. If you want to be like this today, then he’ll do the same to you tomorrow.

“So this is what we’re doing then? Alright, may the best spouse win.”

Huang Guanheng

Also kinda hurt at first. Common norm in the kingdom is to not show public displays of affection so when you’re both finally in the safety behind closed doors and you just hugged him instead he was kinda confused, he started going through his memories to find out if he had made you upset and the whole thing was too stressful for the King until Yuqi spelled it out for him, followed by a gregarious laugh from Xuxi.

“That was it?! Goodness, I stressed out for no reason. (Y/N)! Two can play at that game!”

Liu Yangyang

Oh please, Yangyang would do this before you. When you started dodging his kisses he took this as an act of war, so finally you’re trying to give him a taste of his own medicine, huh? Alright then. Prepare for the worst. Your pillow’s going to be warm on both sides, all the trashcans have plastic wrap over them, all those hoodies you stole from him? He took them back and hid them. It’s a good thing that you were both made for each other because this war can go on perpetually.
