Sooo… do you know that story about Athena being arranged to marry Hephaestus?
This was partly inspired by @mer-acle's drawing of the same myth. I wanted to draw something for it to but wasn't sure what and then... inspiration stuck "Ah Ha! I'll redraw the reluctant bride by Auguste Toulmouche, but like, with Athena!" Which makes this probably the nerdiest drawing I've ever done. But I mean how could I not that death glare is iconic!
This is such a fascinating myth, it has such interesting implications for Athena's family relationships, and Athena as a person. Like not only was she married off despite her clearly wanting it, but nobody did anything about it, she had to get out of it herself. Like that hurts but the way she responds is so wonderfully in character for a much younger Athena.
In the original myth Hephaestus asked to marry Athena (by which I of course mean he asked Zeus what kind of hooligan would ask a woman if she wanted to marry him). But i kind of like the idea I've been playing with of Hephaestus not wanting it either, just because this story really highlights the fact that they have so much in common. They were both born in unusual ways, got abandoned at birth because of it, and when they got back to Olympus LIFE STILL FUCKING SUCKED. I also originally started exploring this myth as a way to have the Erichthonius myth because I love him, and keep Athena and Hephaestus's friendship.
bonus original sketch:
#yeah it had minor flaws when i coloured it so i made some edits in procreate. I love living in the future!#i may do a fully rendered version of this but I might not post it depends if it's any good#characters from right to left are Hera Athena Demeter and Persephone in the back#quite proud of my inclusion of Persephone here because of what the girl in the painting represents#even if she didn't reeeealy turn out that well here#athena#tagamemnon#athena greek mythology#auguste toulmouche#greek gods#my art#greek mythology#by golly it's been a long time since I've posted my art on here!

Headlines and flash, flash, flash photography Wouldn't you rather be a widow than a divorcee?

The background painting was Auguste Toulmouche 's The Reluctant Bride. Well, who would want to get married anyway?

"The Reluctant Queen"
My entry for Draw the Princess 2 is a paraphrase of The Reluctant Bride (1866) by Auguste Toulmouche. Now set in the game chapter "Happily Ever After".
The Princess is the bride, attended by all the Voices that can accompany you. In sacrifice, Smitten became a wraith, pulling the strings (golden chains) to make everything nice and happy. He's decorated the others to comfort her: Opportunist swaps his usual sleazy suit for Smitten's fancy shirt and trousers as a false king, Hero's steel armor is now a useless-but-pretty gold to play the knight in shining armor, and Paranoid's short, torn robe is "repaired" to a cumbersome length with gold trim, perhaps a royal vizier or seer. Furniture and interior design from the chapter are dreamily scattered around to match the shapes of the original -- placing us, the viewer and player, in the scene.

The Reluctant Bride (French: La Fiancée Hésitante, sometimes translated as "The Hesitant Fiancée" or "The Hesitant Betrothed") is an 1866 oil painting by Auguste Toulmouche.
On May 23rd, 1866, Toulmouche’s bride was featured on the cover of L’Univers Illustrée. The original title in French was Le Mariage de Raison (The Marriage of Convenience). Clearly, this wedding was not the bride’s choice. As an upper-middle-class woman, she could not guide her decisions with her heart. Her future depended on relationships that benefited her family’s social status. Most likely, her parents arranged it without even consulting her, hence her annoyance and anger.

may the fourth be with you! here’s a piece I made for class.
it’s inspired by The Reluctant Bride by Auguste Toulmouche and features Padmé at various key stages of her life.
Here’s the original piece:
Padmé outfits I used from left to right:
- Padmé’s wedding gown
- Padmé’s funeral dress
- Padmé’s final senate outfit
- Padmé’s throne room gown
I used symbols of the Republic and the Royal House of Naboo for the outline of the tapestry. Then for the center of the tapestry I depicted Anakin’s lightsaber and also Tatooine’s twin suns, both addressing where her journey begins and the part of her life that’s centered around Anakin.
In the mirror on the left I drew Mustafar, paired with a shattered clock and withering flowers to show that this is where her life ended.
In the mirror on the right, I drew the Naboo Palace partnered with a healthy bouquet of flowers to show that this is where her journey began.
This whole piece is meant to emphasize how short her life ended up being, but she still did so much and lived so many lives within that one lifetime. It’s also kind of a feminine rage piece on how her life was cut short by someone she loved and trusted. Kind of wanted to frame this as her reflecting on her life and decisions.
Hope you guys enjoy! :)

The Reluctant Groom
Had the idea sitting in my brain for years now. finally drew it! Well almost, I changed the lighting because I wanted to, as well as the expression. I did originally have him looking straight at the viewer, but I painted over it and liked the more downturned look.
Shout out if you recognize the carpets on the wall! I designed them myself and used them in two different artworks :)
