I’m Honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, here is Mi Familia. My mom and dad moved to the United States in 1972 and became agricultural workers in California. Harvesting everything that they could in order to feed every human in this country. Without their decision, things could have been different for us in Mexico. Still very proud of our Heritage and to know we are Mexicanos Americanos and Chácanos as they have adopted us in name. Viva El Orgullo Hispano! Y gracias a Los Estados Unidos! 🇺🇸🇲🇽 #hispanicheritagemonth2021 #hispanic #mexicanos #mexicanamerican #chácanos #orgullohispano (at Joplin, Missouri) https://www.instagram.com/p/CUq0FmcMUFv/?utm_medium=tumblr

Meet Cadet Isabela Vargas, USMA Class of 2019 #USMilitaryAcademy #OrgulloHispano #Repost @westpoint_usma with @repostapp ・・・ #HispanicHeritageMonth I grew up in Chicago, where there are a lot of ethnic communities. I would visit my Polish grandmother in the morning and end the day at my Mexican grandmother’s house. It was the coolest thing, growing up in two completely different cultures. Everything they did, holidays, meals, traditions and their lifestyles in general were entirely opposite of each other but they would come together for my birthdays and special events. That meant the world to me. My Hispanic grandmother was really scared about me joining the military, while my Polish grandmother was excited. They’re both great supporters, though, and I fly back to Chicago as much as I can to spend the holidays with them. I never really saw myself coming to West Point. I applied at the encouragement of my family back home, but I was terrified because it was never how I envisioned my future. I was more terrified, though, of having the regret of not coming here if I didn’t give it a shot. I love it here. I didn’t think I would but I really do. West Point has such a unique culture where we compete against each other, but we take the time to build each other up and help each other succeed. I’ve had company mates and friends go out of their way to support me, just like my family back home. Everyone has been extremely supportive of my new life here and my passion for photography. I love taking photos and sending them to my grandparents back home! Cadet Isabela Vargas, Class of 2019

Roberto Clemente Entry #1
Roberto Clemente was a Puerto Rican born, professional baseball player. Early in his career he struggled a lot with injuries and with the language barrier, but later became one the most impactful players in the game. In 1972 Clemente recorded his 3,000th career hit becoming only the 11th player, and the first Latin American player to do that. Off the field he was a man that wanted to serve his community. He was proud of his Puerto Rican heritage and stood up for minority rights. In 1972 Clemente died in a plane crash bringing supplies to survivors of an earthquake in Nicaragua. His legacy continues today as the first Latino to be inducted into the baseball hall of fame.
“Anytime you have an opportunity to make a difference in this world and you don’t, then you are wasting your time on Earth.”
-Roberto Clemente
Every Friday we celebrate a Latinx figure that has had an impact on our communities, in order to show that we all have the power to do the same.
