Heyyy, I love the way you break down each clip and I thought of sharing my thoughts with you and your followers…
Here’s a controversial reflection on this season of wtfock:
As a Belgian Convert Muslim Woman with immigrant roots myself I really tried to understand the pov of yasmina throughout the series. At first I was mad we didn’t get enough information about yasmina’s relationship with faith, but then I remembered that this is not the same for everyone especially for belgian muslims, from what I’ve gathered from my muslim friends is that most follow islam because they were born into it without having a special reason for believing in it, least of all considering it when feeling distressed.
So then I understood what they were trying to portray. This is Yasmina’s story, she feels isolated and alone. So of course every clip is going to confirm that feeling. As much as it’s painful to watch, this is her reality and the reality of many belgian muslims with immigrant roots. I myself have experienced what it’s like to just apologise or ignore your feelings when your friends are being racists because you don’t want to be ostracised by your friends. See when yasmina realised that her friends didn’t understand her pov she felt like she ruined her friendship with them by ‘reacting’ to BA. That’s why she feels guilty, she feels guilty about speaking up, not because speaking up about racism is ‘bad’ but because speaking up caused her to lose her friends.
Now I feel like this is a very accurate portrayal of the slippery slope poc in Belgium go down to keep their friends. It’s not as simple as just drop your friends, find better friends,… . When this is all she’s known she will inevitably return to her oppressors while apologizing.
WTFock is not a documentary about teenage muslims or an attempt at a ideal world where every teenager respects each other fully. So I stopped expecting it to be just that. The reaction of her friends is realistic for the climate in Belgium. Maybe this was very intentional by the writers and their consultant Nora Dari?
Just a thought, what do you think?
as-salamu alaikum sister! thanks for your ask and your comments. so i appreciate your opinion, but i have a different take on the situation.
(1) problems w/ yasmina's POV - so we can't generalize as to the experience of all muslims, obviously. i was born into islam (my family emigrated to the US and i was born and raised here), but i spent many years in college/grad school questioning islam and reading and educating myself about the religion. so today i have a strong belief in the religion, and i'm not just a muslim because my parents are. i have friends and family around the world (both reverts and born into the religion) and each person has a different reason for why they identify as muslim, even if they grew up in the same country. and i find that even my friends who aren't particularly religious, still at times pray salah or seek comfort in qur'an/dua when times are tough (as seen very frequently in this last year with coronavirus related woes). so we can't generalize with all belgian muslims either.
so recognizing that yasmina is not the spokeswoman for all muslims, everywhere, one of my biggest criticisms of the season is that i don't understand how yasmina really feels about islam and her faith or where she fits on the spectrum i discussed above. if to your point that yasmina doesn't have a special reason for believing in islam, then why is she so upset about taking off her hijab? and what about her connection to younes? is it the fact that he's non-muslim that bothers her or the fact that she wants to give in to her physical desires? why don't we know? the fact that we are supposed to be in her POV, but we simply get clips of her reacting to situations without really delving beyond surface deep of what she thinks and feels is a major issue imo.
(2) take away message from the season - skam isn't a documentary as you so said. but there's a very specific history and reason behind why skam was created and the topics its chooses for its target audience. so what is the point of this season? are we telling belgian muslimahs or muslim girls in other similarly situated countries that it's more important to coddle the feelings of your non-muslim friends and downplay the racism that you feel? are we telling them that it's more important to keep toxic friendships than to call out your friends for their microaggressions? shouldn't we be telling our girls that they should stand up for themselves? i've had several experiences where people i thought were friends have made islamophobic or racist comments that made me feel so small, but i just laughed them off for the sake of friendship. and it sucks, and i wouldn't wish that for anyone.
in any case, it's 2021 and enough is enough. there's no reason to stay friends with people who treat you like garbage. why can't yasmina drop her friends and find better ones? aïcha is right there (for example), and if we are talking about staying true to life, my best friends are the ones i made in college, law school, and at my law firm - it's very natural to drift away from these types of fake friends, especially as you grow older.
(3) nora dari vs. muslim writers - it's so freaking unfair to the nora daris and hajar browns of the world, when showrunners trot them out as the muslim "representation" instead of having actual muslim writers as part of the writing room. if we learned anything from the #MeToo movement, it's the gross power imbalance especially between young actors just starting their careers and the older, more established showrunners, directors, and writers that can make or break their careers. so it's an injustice to put nora, hajar, and others in the position of having to defend any of the writing decisions for these seasons. no up and coming actor wants to have the notoriety of being difficult or stepping out of their lane.
so anyway, thank you for raising these salient topics, and here's my two cents on them.
