I took advantage of the last not-rainy day for a while and spent a couple of hours birding and otherwise enjoying nature at Oaks Bottom Wildlife Refuge in SE Portland. This is quickly becoming one of my favorite close-in nature areas, and was a great place for waterfowl watching! I got to see common mergansers fighting over food, northern shovelers and green-winged teal dabbling in the shallows, American wigeons and gadwalls keeping a more wary distance, and--best of all--I finally got to see my very first western screech owl! Two, actually, though one was basically just visible as the edge of a wing sticking out of a crevice in a tree, but the other one was fully in view while snoozing in a hollow.

There was also the requisite amount of Portland-esque graffiti, plenty of mosses and lichens, and SO MANY VERY GOOD DOGS. I decided to head back to the car once the crows started flying overhead en masse to head to the Park Blocks downtown to roost in the trees overnight, but I'll be going back soon.

Went to the Grand Opening of Errol Heights Park in Portland Oregon, there are a bunch of Peacocks in the area. I usually don't get to see them in full display. June 1st 2024.

Greater Roadrunner: one time I thought my neighbor had gotten a bag of pine cones delivered but it was actually just a roadrunner sunning himself ♥️

Tree Swallow:

I just think they’re neat. A pair nested in our neighbors yard this year and it was really fun watching em.

My spark bird! I love them so much, the way they squeak and talk to each other is so cute!

Dark-eyed Junco (Oregon morph):

MY FAVOURITEST BIRD EVER IN THE WORLD. SOOO SPECIAL TO ME I LOVE THESE GUYS MY LITTLE MESSENGERS. I'VE WRITTEN WHOLE ESSAYS ABOUT THESE LITTLE THINGS. THEY ARE THE REMINDERS OF HOPE AND JOY IN THE COLD WINTER. THEY KINDA SAVED MY LIFE BUT THAT'S A WHOLE OTHER STORY. THEY ARE SOOOO SO SO SO SO SPECIAL TO ME FORVER AND ALWAYS WHEN I DIE ILL COME BACK AS ONE OF THESE SILLY LITTLE FUCKERS. I LOVE THEM!!!!!!!!!

I love to see them in the winter! They are my friends and children.
