Hi, so you’ve probably seen this post or some of its permutations on this website lately! (The old version of this post broke because I mistakenly deleted it. Let’s try this again, shall we?)

This is a “RAFFLE” for a Nintendo Switch Lite and the poster is asking people send them $10 to earn a spot in the raffle, of which there are 52. People have already sent money in.

This post was made by user roboticwheelchair and the name which currently displays on their paypal is “Mick Garcia” - it’s very possible you’ve heard their story already from several weeks ago. User roboticwheelchair claims that they were physically assaulted for being a transgender man, and that they sustained a concussion.

The BAD news is that roboticwheelchair is a blog which has been on tumblr for a very long time, and used to belong to someone named Falum Gibson. You may have heard this name from their #justice4falum campaign ages ago. They are a notorious scammer and has been doing this since 2016. LET’S REVIEW (LONG, LONG, LONG POST AHEAD.)

Part 1: #BieberMeetFalum and Meeting Ed Sheeran

In 2016, Falum ran a Justin Bieber fan account on Twitter called @bieberfreezer (account has since been suspended). They began a campaign called #BieberMeetFalum by posting a Twitter thread about their disability, cerebral palsy, and how they had intended to meet Justin Bieber personally because his music was important to them. However, the venue he was performing at was not wheelchair accessible and Falum uses an electric wheelchair. They were trying to get the attention of him or his team in order to ensure they met. This was a reasonable thing to post about! Accessibility is a necessity. We know this. And they weren’t asking for money. Twitter got this the attention it needed and they were able to meet Bieber despite the trouble. (LINK)

Later on, they gunned to meet Ed Sheeran and succeeded.

Part 2: #TaylorNoticeFalum

In 2018, Falum was on Tumblr as user taylorsgetawaycarxo. At this point they still say they have cerebral palsy, but has also said they have COPD (something they later will drop.) Claiming that they are terminally ill and has 2 years left to live, they talk about how Taylor Swift is their idol and they want to meet her before they die.

This came right after they had done the same thing with Demi Lovato fans, claiming they idolised Demi and needed to meet her, so on and so forth. They ran a GoFundMe for this.

The GoFundMe is now defunct, but the URL was “falumlastwish” I believe. Here’s where the plot gets a little lost, because the sheer number of different GoFundMes, donation posts, and meet-a-celebrity campaigns that Falum was running in these couple of years is... pretty wild. There’s a post from another blog here on Tumblr about the Taylor Swift fandom’s run-in with them. (LINK)

Here’s a GoFundMe they ran from a music fan account on Instagram, where they were asking for help escaping homelessness. They raised almost 5,000 dollars out of the 10,000 they were asking. (LINK)

At some point they also ran a GoFundMe for a PTSD service dog. I’m not sure how much they were asking for this one, but they apparently made $880 off of it.

Part 3: Ellie Elizabeth

This part is a little muddled, because the tumblr blog connected to it has been deleted and it’s really difficult to find archives of the posts, but at some point in early 2019 Falum started using the blog ellie-elizabeth21 to ask for money as well. The story was that they were being sent to conversion therapy for being bisexual by their father, who had them deemed legally mentally incompetent. Further stories they posted about were potential evictions, needs for grocery money, etc.

“Ellie” also ran a GoFundMe to escape conversion therapy. Although the person running the campaign was listed as Ellie Elizabeth, the “beneficiary” listed on the campaign is Falum Gibson, proving that Ellie was another pseudonym - just a better hidden one. This was Ellie Elizabeth’s PayPal account at the time, I believe? And anyway, you might note that they apparently made nearly $6,500 on this account.

Part 4: #Justice4Falum

Now in November of 2019, Falum moved away from the world of Fan Internet and decided to try out something new. They made the blog roboticwheelchair in September of 2019 and reblogged a photoset of cats to it, which for a while was the only thing on the blog besides the donation post they initially made. They’ve gone through a cycle of reblogging and deleting things there, basically clearing out the blog every couple of weeks to make a new post.

At this point they were also @falumgibson on Twitter. The account has since been locked. This is when they posted a GoFundMe describing medical abuse they were allegedly undergoing at the Ottawa Hospital. Weird side note, this GoFundMe is still running and can be donated to, though obviously I’m recommending you don’t do so. (LINK)

They made several donation posts on Tumblr about this campaign, frequently linking it or their PayPal account and asking people to donate. Sometimes it was to go directly to their legal fund for this lawsuit, other times they were asking for money for medications or other immediate costs.

Side note, they had claimed to be in the hospital since August of 2019 due to suicidal ideation and claimed they had been psych warded. From what I can tell, the Ottawa Hospital General Campus they claimed to be hospitalised at does not actually have a psychiatric ward. It has a mental health team, but they appear to do outpatient work. It’s not really clear what they were in the hospital for at this point.

#Justice4Falum was originally about fundraising for a place to live because apparently they were in danger of being forced to leave the hospital due to homelessness. Later on they turned it into a legal fund to sue the hospital for mistreatment.

Part 5: Further Fundraising, Coming Out As Trans

While Falum was in the hospital, they started identifying as nonbinary. I’m not in any position to speculate about whether or not Falum is transgender, because that’s honestly not the point. Either way, they have started using their trans identity in much the way they use their disabilities - as a way to garner sympathy and trust, and to scam people out of money.

On their Twitter at this point, they did seem to have kind of a bizarre interpretation of how transition worked and appeared to be under the impression that the first thing trans men do is get top surgery? (LINK)

Shortly after this, still during the November that #Justice4Falum ran during, they began asking for donations to a different PayPal account than their normal one, because their stepdad was dying of cancer. There was a GoFundMe for this as well, but it appeared to feature their parents and was possibly not created by Falum.

No date on this tweet unfortunately, but right after that, they made a post about how they had been outed to their transphobic father and needed to escape living with him.

At this point, Falum has added several diagnoses to those they claim to have. In addition to cerebral palsy, they now claim to have multiple sclerosis and several mental illnesses. No more COPD, though! I’m very impressed that they recovered from a terminal illness!

Now that they’re out of the closet, in early December they begin making donation posts on Tumblr again and have now made a Patreon. (LINK: POST) (LINK: PATREON) Soon after this, they apparently left their home and became homeless, and started posting about this on Twitter and linking their PayPal.

In late December they posted on Twitter about having attempted suicide by taking 75 extra strength Tylenol. Warning for a photograph of their IV in this link. (LINK)

Not very long after, Falum returned to their narrative of being terminally ill by posting about how their multiple sclerosis (something they have only claimed since 2019, I believe) causes them over 20 seizures a day and will eventually kill them. (LINK)

Then they locked their Twitter account and decided to try something new.

Part 6: Connor Kay, “anontransman”

Enter Connor Kay. At this point Falum makes a new Twitter account called @ConnorIsTrans which eventually morphs into @anontransman. They initially link this account to their old main account, saying that they’ve switched in order to be openly trans on their new account because their transphobic father is stalking them. (LINK)

They continue asking for donations on Twitter, now with a Ko-Fi account called Connor Rocks.

They also post a story about an ex-friend of theirs spitting on them for being trans, apparently, and say they’re calling the police on her, which really doesn’t seem like something that’d be safe for a disabled trans person to do but whatever. (LINK)

On their blog at roboticwheelchair, they post stories about how they are being assaulted and mocked for being transgender. I should note that on Twitter they’ve said they are not out IRL and have not taken steps to transition.

Not only does this particular story sound kind of like the “down with cis bus” post, it’s also somewhat suspect that they allege they were called a tr*nny as an AFAB trans person, given who is generally targeted by that word. But. Moving on.

When the COVID-19 pandemic came around, Connor created a Facebook group for disability support. This was run by the Facebook account Connor Kay, which has since been deleted. It was the same account that they used to have and they’d not changed anything except for the name; prior posts showed it was Falum Gibson’s account.

It turns out they deleted this Facebook account because someone on Facebook posted about their years-long history of scamming people online. Here’s a link to an imgur album of some of the Facebook callout and the images the OP posted. (LINK)

So Falum, or Connor, decides to start anew with an all new PayPal, Ko-Fi, Patreon and Twitter account. At this point they begin to break away from linking these accounts to the name Falum Gibson and their past donation posts, although they are still using the same Tumblr blog. They change their Twitter handle to @anontransman and remove links to Falum. (TWITTER SCREENCAP) (KO-FI SCREENCAP) (PATREON SCREENCAP)

Then they tweet about how they have been diagnosed with cancer. (LINK) Then they begin asking for $100k to go to the US for treatment. (LINK)

Soon after, this Tweet has been completely deleted and they have instead started asking for money for top surgery. (LINK) I believe this is in reverse chronological order, but here are a week’s worth of tweets from them - all deleted at random times in order to make room for the others - asking for money for various reasons. Yes, this was all literally within the same week. (LINK)

Note the very last image of that album contains a reference to an “Amazon Raffle” - they were basically telling people that donations would win them a spot in a raffle for an Amazon gift card or something? It seems they moved on from the @anontransman account before the raffle could come to fruition, or possibly that they just deleted all references to it. Not sure.

In April of 2020, roboticwheelchair posted a specific donation post about being attacked for being transgender and sustaining a concussion. They said they did not see a doctor after the assault because they didn’t think it was important, so their concussion went untreated and because of it they were unable to get groceries. The donation post linked to Connor Kay’s PayPal account. It was deleted and reposted several different times, with basically the same text.

Part 7: Mick Garcia

This is a more recent post with the exact same story, now about their multiple sclerosis medication. The only difference is now that the PayPal link sends you to the PayPal of Mick Garcia. Mick Garcia has a different PayPal username than Falum, Ellie, and Connor did.

On April 12th, the @anontransman account deactivated after Falum, or Ellie, or Connor, or Mick decided to leave Twitter. Then yesterday on April 19th, it reactivated and they tweeted once again.

However, around this same time, another Twitter account under the name Mick Garcia with an icon @anontransman used to use and a very similar tone/style cropped up.

The Mick Garcia account has not tweeted yet, as it appears that they may be staying with @anontransman for their current purposes, but it appears that for some reason or another they’ve decided to start going by Mick Garcia now.

I guess it’s probably relevant to note that while I suppose there are probably some white people out there with the last name Garcia, Falum is really seriously white and it’s suspect they would pick out Garcia as a pseudonym, whether they list “white” in their Twitter bio or not.

More from the current state of the roboticwheelchair blog includes many, many posts where they’re either reposting their own petitions or basically grabbing for as many followers as possible. You can probably guess why. (LINK)

Finally, The Switch Raffle

Literally today, April 20th, roboticwheelchair posted something that is allegedly a raffle. They claim to be giving away a Nintendo Switch Lite to a lucky winner. There are 52 slots in the raffle; they are asking that people send them $10 over PayPal in order to enter. They’re also claiming this is to further fundraise for their medication.

They are claiming their doctor has put them on an MS medication that costs $450 every two weeks. (Note that if they’re trying to make money for that right now and also going to buy a Switch for the winner, than they’d only have about half of that at the end? The Switch Lite is about $260 in Canada and their total earnings from a full raffle would be $520.)

You should not give money to them for this raffle, or for any reason. The reason I’m compiling all of this is because after months of seeing them pull this scam over and over again, they’re now promising people an actual product that given their history, I would say they are highly unlikely to deliver.

Given their past, it is most likely they will delete this raffle once they have the money they want, and refuse to allude to it ever again. Or maybe they’ll just disappear! Or hell, maybe they’ll have some kind of nebulous problem ordering the Switch when someone wins, and that’ll be that.

But it’s clear based on this history, I hope, that Falum or Ellie or Connor or Mick has a long history of taking lots and lots of money from strangers online. Like, a lot of money. My estimate is that they’ve made over $15k on this, and that’s exclusively based off of the visible numbers on their GoFundMes and Ko-Fi accounts.

Please do not give this person your money. They are not trustworthy. There are other people who need it - like you, or maybe like, someone you personally know and not some complete stranger who keeps telling people they’re terminally ill so they can meet a cool musician.

Disclaimer

I’ve compiled all of this information to the best of my ability, but I am just one person and it took a lot of digging due to the deleted accounts involved.

Falum is actually disabled; I believe they do have cerebral palsy and may have other disabilities. I do not know if they really have MS, but it’s hard to trust them because they previously lied about having terminal COPD.

I have no idea if Falum is really transgender or not. They have apparently taken no concrete steps to transition, which I know means very little. That being said, if they are transgender, they are leveraging their identity in dangerous ways against other people for money and sympathy. Their stories about being assaulted by strangers for being transgender are highly suspect, given their lack of transition and the fact that the scenarios they describe are highly cliche.

Finally, I’m not trying to harass Falum or threaten them in any way. I don’t know them. If they’re interested in talking candidly about what they have been doing all these years and why, that’s fine. I would honestly love to understand, but at this point it seems like the only thing they can do is apologise for their dishonesty and stop doing this.

aufbrechen, um auszubrechen – Finding the love of my life in Ottawa

Hello world!

You might be wondering why this entry is written in English. The answer is simple: It's because this is a very special one for a very special person. Exactly two years ago I met a man that I've been in love with ever since. And this is how our two paths crossed...

I arrived at the Ottawa airport in the late afternoon. Compared to Vancouver it was freezing. Snow was covering houses, trees and streets. One could assume it was actually winter. I took an Uber to my Airbnb which cost me about $30. When I had booked the Airbnb everything around looked pretty close. I actually thought I could walk into the city within 45 minutes. Oh, what a fool I was. After I arrived at my apartment in Gloucester, a suburb of Ottawa, and logged into the wifi I soon found out that the next grocery store was a 30 minute walk away. Needless to say that there was 10cm of snow covering the streets.

But since I was hungry and the owner of the apartment was not home yet, I decided to go for that walk to buy myself some dinner. Except for that huge scarf I had bought in Revelstoke my winter gear was rather uncommon – two t-shirts, a sweater, a light jacket, a pair of jeans and runners. I'm still freezing just thinking about that walk. But when I came back I had dinner and some snacks in my backpack. So it was definitely worth it. I made myself some food and had great company – the owner's two cats. With my stomach full of spaghetti I went upstairs to my room. One of the reasons I went to Ottawa was to meet the OTM crew. OTM stands for One Track Mind and it's a group of people training for the decathlon. Kevin, head of that crew, vlogged about his life as a decathlete and put the videos on YouTube. I had been watching his videos for quite a while now and was eager to finally meet and train with the crew. Before I started my trip I had been emailing Kevin about the possibility of training with them. He liked the idea. So now I emailed him again asking about their training schedule for the week. While I was waiting for him to reply I opened up Grindr on my phone. I hadn't touched the app since Vancouver so I was interested to see if the Ottawa users were less creepy. And indeed most men on there seemed to be rather ordinary judging by their profile pictures. Also, I did not get any dick pics. So I was regaining trust in the app. Still, I did not use my real name on the app. I was Ben. Nice to meet you! Since I was still home alone I spent the night scrolling through numerous profiles of gay Ottawa men. If you are interested in a person you can either text them right away or send that person a flame to see if they like you back. Since I'm not good at taking the first step, I usually waited for people to text me or send me a flame. There was only one person that night that got my flame. His name was Brennan and I liked his greenish blue eyes. There was something faithful in his look. It did not take long for him to send me a flame back. My heart jumped a little when I saw that notification. Now it was time for me to take the first step. I started texting him on the app. Honestly, I don't even remember what my first lines were, probably something like „Hi, I'm Josef... I mean Ben. Nice to meet you!“. But whatever I said first, it must have worked because he texted back. I was super happy and we texted back and forth for quite some time. Finally, I got a text message from Kevin that there is training tomorrow morning and that he's gonna pick me up at 9am. It was 2am. Time to go to bed. I put my phone aside and fell asleep with a happy smile on my face.

I got up after less than six hours of sleep. But nothing could worry me because Brennan still texted back. After a quick breakfast Kevin picked me up to go to training. What I really like about Canadians is that they are so open-minded. I mean, Kevin just picked up a random German guy to take him to training. We had only texted a few times and soon after I was joining the OTM training session in the Dome at Louis Riel. I had never seen a 400 meter indoor track in my entire life. It was awesome! Unfortunately, none of the other OTM crew members showed up for that training. But two girls that I knew from Kevin's vlogs – Charlotte and Sveta – were also there. So that made it a bit less awkward. We spend the next two and a half hours doing long jump drills, short sprints, hurdles, med ball exercises, some weight training and finshed off with 2x300m. It was a lot of fun. I was super out of shape, but they still made me feel like I was part of the group. In the end, I got a cap from their coach James and two Ottawa Lions t-shirts from Zach, another coach from that club. I had a great time! Thanks a lot, Kevin!

Back at home, I took a shower, ate the rest of yesterday's spaghetti and went to a thrift shop that was next to the grocery store. I desperately needed a warm jacket. But I was unlucky. They did not have any jackets that I could wear with confidence. So I walked back to my Airbnb. I was lucky that I just made it before it started to snow like crazy. When I arrived I finally met the owner, Mark, and his girlfriend Kaitlyn. They were both super nice. While they were preparing their dinner we talked a lot about travelling and cats. After lots of laughs I went upstairs and started texting with Brennan again. We agreed on exchanging numbers and continued our conversation on WhatsApp. Since Kevin had told me that there was free ice skating Downtown and I needed to go buy a warmer jacket anyway, I knew that I was heading to the city the next day. So I suggested meeting Downtown. When Brennan did not they no right away I figured my chances were really good to actually meet that man with the beautiful eyes. Again, I went to bed with a smile on my face.

When I went downstairs to make myself some breakfast the next morning Mark offered to take me Downtown since he had a meeting there anyway. An hour later I found myself standing in the cold wind of Parliament Hill. I had booked 30 minutes of ice skating online. So I just rented some skates and had a great time on the ice without falling once.

After freezing my butt off on the ice it was finally time to get some winter clothes. So I went to the Rideau Mall to get a nice warm jacket and some shoes. I texted Brennan to see what his plans were for the day. He actually considered coming Downtown to meet me. But I had some convincing to do. He told me how gross he looked today and I told him that I would really like to experience his complete grossness first hand. It kind of worked. He agreed to come and meet me at The Highlander Pub. We had a date! So now I did not only need a warm jacket and shoes but also a nice pair of jeans and a sweater since I was wearing some super worn out travelling clothes. I found everything I needed, got changed in the bathroom, stuffed my old clothes in a backpack that was way too small and looked in the mirror. Just one little detail was missing. I was still wearing my glasses. But since I did not have glasses on in any of my profile pictures I figured to better not wear them. So I didn't. It made my vision worse but helped my confidence. I checked my phone and Brennan just texted that he was sitting in The Highlander Pub, in the left corner when you enter. I loved how specific he was because it lowered the chances of awkwardly not finding each other immensely. And that's when I walked in and saw him for the first time. He smiled at me and I smiled back. I said hi and the rest is history. We had an apple cider and some good talks. We was funny, asked smart questions and made me feel super comfortable. After our Ciders we had some pizza at The Grand Pizzeria and Bar. That's where he asked me if I was actually gay. I had a good laugh and confirmed my gayness. Time just flew by. He showed me around the city. He took the picture of me hanging from the T of the famous Ottawa sign. We walked through the snow.

To Parliament Hill where we saw a little light show.

After our amazing first date he drove me to my Airbnb. We hugged and said goodbye both knowing that this would not be the last time we saw each other. I went to bed with the biggest smile on my face.

After all the excitement the day before I slept super long. I went to get some Christmas presents for my family and headed to training after. This time the whole OTM crew was present.

We did some sprints, weight training and shot put. It was fun to get back into training. After a shower at home Brennan picked me up to get some burritos at Mucho Burrito. On our drive there I took all my courage and placed my hand on his that was on the gearshift. I asked him if that was okay. He said yes. That made me really happy. At Mucho Burrito I ordered a Mucho Veggie, the vegetarian burrito option, and was asked what kind of meat I would like on that. Classic. Brennan and I had a good laugh about that and ate our delicious burritos. We headed to his place to watch a movie. Julia Roberts ate, prayed and loved. And we cuddled. The weather outside got super ugly. Snow fell like crazy and the wind was picking up. We both decided that it was not the best idea to drive or be in a car right now. So I stayed the night. To not rush things I slept in the guest room which is something we now laugh about a lot. Whenever I visit Brennan nowadays he asks if I want to sleep in the guest room again. Probably I should some day to relive the memories.

They next day started with lots of cuddles and breakfast. It felt like the right place to be. Brennan took me back to my Airbnb so I could make it to training in time. At training we just did some running and pole vaulting. I took an Uber home, showered and prepared my dinner. I spent the night at the kitchen table talking and laughing with Mark and Kaitlyn. They gave me a little guestbook to sign. Here is what I did.

After that I went upstairs, packed my things and fell asleep right away. My Ottawa experience had been amazing so far. The next destination was Montréal although I liked Ottawa and especially Brennan so much that I just wanted to stay there.

The next day I left Gloucester and took the train to Montréal. The train ride was quite scenic so the time flew by and suddenly I arrived in the most populated city of Québec. When I left the train station to walk the few blocks to my hostel a windy negative 15 degrees celsius blew into my face. I had never experienced anything like that. It felt unreal. And very, very cold. I made it to the hostel in one frozen piece, checked in and got to my room. At hostel looked nice at first, but the eight bunk bedroom looked and smelled like prison. We had a little bathroom in there that probably hadn't been cleaned in two years. It was a mess. But it was cheap. I just put my stuff in that room and left it as fast as I could. The common area was nice though. And they had a big room for reading which nobody used. So I sat down there and started writing on my blog. After a while I could not concentrate anymore so I decided to go ugly Christmas sweater shopping. It's a family tradition that I started a few years ago. I basically put on every piece of clothing I had in my backpack and went outside. After a few failed attempts of finding a really ugly one I found this one.

After my shopping success I went to the Museum of Modern Art. They had a Leonard Cohen exhibition. All I knew about him was that he wrote Hallelujah. So I was eager to learn more. I walked out of that exhibition three hours later thinking that I learnt a lot. But now the only thing I remember is his quote: There is a crack in everything. That's how the light gets in. I really like that quote, but still feel embarrassed about not being able to remember more. Not to blame anyone here but I was constantly texting Brennan while walking through the museum. One could say I might have been a bit distracted. After that nice educational visit I got a delicious falafel and went back to the hostel. The room was still smelly but so was I after the falafel. So I called it a day and fell asleep.

The next day I slept in a little, took a shower in one of the hallway bathrooms, got my breakfast and went into the city. I bought a few postcards and a nice sweater for Brennan as a surprise. After that I felt like I had seen enough of Montréal since all I could think of was Brennan. So I went to the train station to change my train ticket to be back in Ottawa earlier. That way I could spend one more full day with Brennan before leaving for Iceland. I paid $21 to change my ticket and was a happy man. Through the freezing wind of Montréal I walked back to the hostel to relax in that reading room nobody was using. When I went back into my room I met Charlie from London. He told me about a Christmas Market he wanted to go to and asked if I wanted to join. So we walked to that Christmas Market which felt a bit like a German Christmas Market. Just that it was trying too hard.

But it was at that place and time that I had my very first poutine. I felt super Canadian right away. The poutine itself was okay. It was more about the experience anyway.

After that Charlie went to a party and I went to bed.

The next morning I got up early to catch the train to Ottawa. On the train ride I watched Home Alone 1 on my laptop. It's the kind of nostalgia I like. With the perfect timing of Kevin hugging his mother in the end I arrived in Ottawa. Brennan picked me up at the train station. We went to our favourite – Mucho Burrito – and with a full stomach made it to his place. We spend all day watching movies and cuddling on the couch. I enjoyed every minute of it. Julie Andrews taught us the Do-Re-Mi as we were watching The Sound of Music. Later Melissa McCarthy food poison pooed in the sink in Bridesmaids. All in all, it was a successful day that ended with pizza and more cuddles. This time I upgraded myself to sleeping in his bed. We were both happy with that decision.

The next day it was time to say goodbye for now. I was headed to Iceland next and Scandinavia after. But I was already sure that I would pass on the last Scandinavia week and get on a plane back to Canada. I gave him the sweater I bought. And he gave me some beautiful gloves. I was so happy and so sad at the same time. He drove me to the airport, gave me one last kiss and the next thing I know is me waving him goodbye. At first, there was a lot of sadness knowing that this part of our story was over, that I was about to continue my travels and that I would not see him for some time now. But soon after I realized that it was just the start of it all. The start of something so beautiful words fail to describe. So I sat there at the gate waiting for my flight. I checked my phone. He texted. Heart emoji. This is just the start. There is so much more to come.

WASTE FREE GROCERY SHOPPING:

Bring reusable grocery bags, mesh produce bags (you can purchase at some local stores potentially or order online) and jars for bulk stores like Bulk Barn.

Stop at local bakeries and bring a cloth bag for bread and pastries.

Support zero waste stores (like NU Grocery in Ottawa!), hopefully they will be common in the future!

Avoid foods with packaging, even if they’re recyclable. It takes a lot of materials to create packaging and energy to recycle them. Avoid when you can but if not, go for products in glass or paper. AVOID SINGLE USE PLASTIC AT ALL COSTS.

It takes effort to shop zero waste, but seriously, from my own experience, it becomes a habit over time and gets easy. Changing your way of life can be hard but you’re making changes for the greater good of the planet!

Spring Cleaning

The air is starting the smell crisper, the days are starting to get longer, and the snow banks are starting to melt. It’s the season of awakening, the season that signals the start of new life. It’s no wonder this is the time of year where everyone begins to put the work in to set themselves up for the coming months.

As of tonight I have finally fixed my fridge (small victory, but after 6 weeks of living out of a tiny bar fridge this is great news). Ended up changing 3 different parts and lots of troubleshooting with a multimeter and learning how fridges work I finally got it working again.

Last week, while I had the kids there was the unfortunate situation where my kids’ daycare workers went on strike for 4 days (Monday to Thursday). This meant that I had to take 3 days vacation in order to watch them full time. Not a big deal, but still a challenge. I tried to fill their time with activities like going to the library, the grocery store, playing outside in the snow.. etc..

Made for a challenging week, that said, I handled it like a champ but with having to stay home this limited my ability to go to the gym. I had to use my one day that week where the ex took them to get to work and go to the gym, then also go the Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

This week I’ve been slacking on the gym and the food prep. However I think now that I actually have a working full fridge, I feel I can finally start back up with the routine of meal prep and gym workouts.

My work has been really busy, and I feel like I should really step up my game at work. I need to start getting some wins in terms of my output. I have a new big project that just landed so at least I can start with that in getting all that work done. If only I can stop fighting fires and having to fix broken things over and over.

Comedy has been again on overdrive. This is my week without the kids, so I’ve been pretty busy. The one day off I had last week I spent it going to the local comedy club and seeing my friends compete in the winter comedy competition (the one I competed in the week before and didn’t make through), then last Friday I performed at an indie show, Saturday I went to 2 different shows, one is an indie show where I introduced myself to the show runners in order to try and secure a spot (Saturday spots are hard to come by). The second show was a late night show, with some of the more seasoned comics in town.

Sunday morning after the gym I had my writing group, then that evening I performed at something completely different. This was a Storyteller show that is partly run by another comic. The idea isn’t necessarily to be funny, but to tell a 7 minute long form story. The theme of that night was called “Method to the Madness” and I used that to tell my long form story about my appearance as a guest on the Dr Phil show, way back in 2004 (yeah I know...).

That night, 3 of my other comic colleagues also performed, and we all quickly realized how interesting this show was. There is a strange comfort in having the freedom to tell a story without the hard expectation of having to be funny the whole time. There were other people who performed there and it was clear difference between the comic and non-comics. You can tell we all were much more comfortable in front of people, we have a better understanding of how to craft a story, cut out the parts of the story that don’t matter and be able to give a payoff or ending that made sense. I really enjoyed it and might perform this show again. I think it’s a very interesting experience.

A new development is my friend Peter is back in town after having completed his travels in Hawaii where he trained for and completed an Ultra Marathon. If you remember Peter back in my way earlier posts, he was my roommate in the HellHouse. Well he contacted me with interest in wanting to perform standup and after talking to him I think he would be amazing at it. He’s talked about it for a while and for anyone who knows him, will tell you, he is well suited for it. So on Monday I brought him over to the local Monday Night Open Mic and introduced him to the show runner and some of my comic friends. Not surprisingly he already knew a few of them.

Other discussions came up and I think I might actually have a roommate for the summer. He is in need of a place to stay until August and since he has a car and I’ve lived with him before, I think he’d be a great fit. Also it would be nice to have a few extra dollars to help with the bills at the house as well as have some company. He’s coming to visit tomorrow the check it out.

Last week however did bring some bad news. My hero in comedy passed away suddenly and it was a massive shock to our community here. His name was Mike MacDonald. He was a legend in comedy. I have a special relationship with him as I remember being a young boy watching standup on television, namely the Just For Laughs comedy gala and Mike MacDonald came up and was truly the first standup to really make me laugh. He has this ability to find hilarious situations and act out these ridiculous things to accompany his jokes was genius. I first met him when I attended a comedy show at a very small venue in Vancouver. I told him I was from his hometown of Ottawa and that I too was interested in performing comedy. He straight up told me that if I wanted to do it, just do it. Don’t doubt, if you are made to perform, you’ll do everything to make it happen, otherwise get off the stage.

I took that to heart and not one month after that encounter I performed my first time ever. Later when I moved back to Ottawa, I found out he too had moved back to Ottawa to recover from some major health issues. He was a regular at the local club and I would see him often. We’d chat in the green room, talk shop and eventually he remembered my name. He even was the judge when I performed the summer comedy competition last summer. I can’t say he was my friend, that would be disingenuous, but he was a comedy colleague, an inspiration. It was heartwarming to see the love and read the stories posted after he passed. He was a truly kind man, and a real friend to the new comics. He will be greatly missed.

As far as my ex is concerned, she is doing whatever she is doing. I still don’t know what she does all day anymore. I’m guessing at this point her parents are probably starting to get sick of her being in their house. I know she’s out there dating which is fine and none of my business. I just wonder if her parents wonder what the fuck she is doing.

I’m sure soon enough she’ll get her attention directed back at me and start throwing more agreements at me. This weekend is Easter weekend and it looks like I’ll be handling the kids during that time since it’s my week. There goes my long weekend sadly.. Oh well.

Today however is her birthday. A day where I definitely have a certain guilt over how I royally fucked up her birthday last year. You see, last year I had tried to make plans and tried to get things together for her. I wanted to go out to dinner and get her a gift and cake, however on the Friday of her birthday her friends had a surprise party planned for her. During the day she was mad at me because I didn’t have a gift, I didn’t have a cake, I hadn’t planned anything to what she had expected. What I was expecting to do was to get her a gift on the Saturday and go out for dinner that evening. However I should have been better at planning and we had a fight before she left for her surprise party. That night I baked a cake for her to try and make up and again.. fucked up that cake.

I can’t blame anyone but myself for it. It was hard at that time to plan anything while working 50 hours a week, coming home and then being full-on dad. Since I was expected to arrive at a certain time, and my travel was tracked on my phone by her, I had no way of getting her a gift or a cake. I couldn’t order anything online because it wouldn’t have arrived on time and we had a shared Amazon account so she would have seen anything I ordered anyway. Anyhow these are my excuses and I own up to being a shitbag. I think back and this was probably the event that threw her over the edge with me, however the more I look at it, I suspect she was already done with me anyway. So anything I would have done probably wouldn’t have been enough.

I think at this point in our relationship I was resolved to not really caring that much about the little things with us. I was shut off with caring about her since she had been in overdrive with the put downs and bickering. This wasn’t the happiest times we had. This was the time she was ignoring me a lot, playing on her phone and just giving me constant ultimatums.

I know the birthday thing is something she has held over my head for a long time, and I’m pretty sure she’ll use it again to bitch to her friends how horrible a person I was. She forgets the other 8 years I had gone above and beyond with her birthdays, special events, anniversaries. Those are all quickly forgotten. It’s almost as if my value was based on what I did for her, and all the other amazing things I did for her didn’t matter because this was the most recent slight against her. Again playing into that victim mentality. Anything to make me feel like less of an individual. Needless to say today sucks.

Anyhow, I’m going to continue to soldier on. Keep moving forward, I can’t be perfect all the time, but at least there’s progress. This spring is going to have some big changes and some fun times coming. Also with that is probably some challenging times I’m sure, I’ll face them head on.

Finding Contentment and Abundance

Working in the real estate industry, professional development is par for the course and often personal development goes hand in hand with it. This is a journey that I have been on for many years and I will, no doubt, continue this journey. It began with learning about the power of positive thinking and the Law of Attraction, introduced to me by The Secret by Rhonda Byrne and revisited countless times in seminars and courses over the years.

Learning about gratitude soon followed as well as learning how to use affirmations to attract abundance. So I wrote affirmations and gratitudes in a journal every day of what I wanted to be and what I thought I should be thankful for. But I tired of the process and was skeptical of the results – I felt that the Law of Attraction was just not working for me!

Prior to March of this year, my life was incredibly busy, as I was drawn to pursing excitement and experiences. This has what has driven me, especially since discovering theatre in my mid-20s. Life was always about pushing myself just a bit further and seeking adventures, whatever they may be. This is what motivated me to move across the country from Ottawa to Calgary and to travel when I have been able. Indeed, if my life was “quiet” I felt that I needed something exciting to bring about a sense of purpose, be it a role in a play, a trip somewhere new or even a romantic relationship! I always was pursuing something better and often experiencing disappointment when I didn’t achieve it.

Suddenly having this very full and exciting life taken away from me overnight was a disappointment, but I was soon to find the silver-lining and discover the opportunity in being forced to slow-down. Had I have not been forced to slow down, I might not have discovered how gratitude and the Law of Attraction are related and how it actually all works. And so, for the last few months, I have been doing a lot of inner reflection. Indeed, there was no other choice as when you live alone (albeit with a cat!), you only have yourself for company. There was no theatre or film or anything exciting to distract me from my own thoughts! Now after several weeks have passed, I was privileged to discover that I am actually a “glass is half-full” type of person, despite the curveballs that life throws at me. I miss theatre and film and event work, but I am not mourning the loss as I know it is temporary. Instead, I have been appreciating mundane day-to-day activities and pastimes that are limited mostly to the home. I now look forward to weekly grocery runs and checking out thrift stores as well as afternoon walks or runs. For me the hardest thing was to get used to being home in the evening – it’s still hard in some respects. I while away the evenings cross stitching and watching Netflix, knowing that eventually I will be back to a life where I long for quiet evenings at home!

My daytime life has been slowly getting back to normal and the past several weeks have seen a reintroduction of normal activities back into my schedule. First was being able to go visit my horse and ride once again, and then an increase in real estate activities, particularly after the ban was lifted on open houses. I’ve even started to go for coffee with friends.

You might be asking what this has to do with gratitude and the Law of Attraction. Read on.

During my first year of real estate (13 years ago now!), CIR Realty invited local motivational speaker, Suze Casey, to give an introductory seminar to CIR agents. This was the first of many such seminars, and though I signed up for her e-newsletter, it wasn’t until this year when I once again attended one of her introductory seminars. Suze has developed belief repatterning techniques in order to flip the switch on negative self-talk and promote positive thinking. Since that early seminar, Suze has written a book called Belief Re-patterning and created a multi-day event called “Flip Your Switch.” Information on the book, the event and seminars (currently online) can be found at https://beliefrepatterning.com/ and https://www.learnit-liveit.com/ Attending this seminar earlier this year rekindled my desire for personal development particularly in regards to my mentality.

I also recently read The Gratitude Prescription by Will Pye, which expands on practices of gratitude and affirmation that I had learnt about in the past and practiced. Will, who is a brain tumour survivor, writes from personal experience and provides meditations and affirmations to assist with feelings of gratitude and happiness wherever one may be in life at that moment.

Tied in with using meditation to promote living in the moment and acceptance of myself, while also lessening feelings of anxiety, I began to piece together how it all works and how these principles can bring me (and any person) joy and contentment in day to day life. On a recent walk, I realized that I feel quite content with life generally and that this is something that I feel most of the time now, whereas I hadn’t in the past. Sure, I still have moments of stress and worry (mostly about the future), however, I’ve found that they are easily eliminated and I can revert back to a state of contentedness pretty quickly. I think it is because I’ve been able to shift my feelings of gratitude to the simple and constant things in my life of late.

In regards to the Law of Attraction and manifesting abundance, I have manifested things, usually contest wins, with fleeting thoughts, but no burning desire, about something that I need or want – I won a bike and a knapsack one year this way. I find that things that I have a burning desire to have (especially intangible things like a specific role in a show), I don’t usually get! I think that if you really want or need something that badly it indicates a feeling of lack which contradicts the way manifestation of abundance works. You cannot be grateful for what you have, if you feel you don’t have enough! Perhaps, if you already feel contentment, which is, if you think about it, the ultimate feeling of abundance, perhaps that is what attracts more abundance, whatever that may be! I certainly feel that feelings of joy and contentment give me a reason to get up in the morning and be productive with my day, whether with business activities, creating self-tape auditions or entering contests!

My epiphany has meant that I’ve become more satisfied and content with what I have – my spacious apartment in a preferred area of the city, my family, my friends, my horse, my cat, my career, my health, my hobbies and interests, and yes, even Netflix and quiet nights in! If this is what life is for the time-being, so be it, may as well enjoy it! When things change as they no doubt will, I am ready, and I will continue to appreciate what comes next on life’s journey.

You favorite U.S. restaurant chains will be more eager to operate north of the 49th when they're not faced with Canada's over-regulation of food, language and labor.

No longer will Albertans have to just sit on the sidelines and watch Americans elect the leader of the Free World.

26. Get a national culture & identity (vs “post-national”)

Americans have a strong sense of shared identity, cultural practices and values. Canada's leaders have declared it a "post-national" country, having no single shared identity. This encourages Canadians to stay in their ethnic cliques rather than work together like Americans do.

27. America first vs. globalism

Alberta will become part of America; a country now lead by those who put American priorities ahead of matters abroad. Canada is becoming the last bastion of globalism and makes domestic matters take a back seat to "virtuous" acts of saving people in faraway lands.

Canada's political spectrum is sharply to the left of the United States. The Conservative Party of Canada would be to the left of the Democrats if it was part of the U.S. Alberta keeps voting conservative which means it belongs in a more right-oriented political system like the U.S.

There has never been a better time to be American. Those who support MAGA are walking with pride as their country is rebuilt, while Albertans walk with hunched shoulders, not proud of the country that mocks and exploits it.

When Alberta becomes part of the U.S. and Albertans are earning $USD, they will be able to go to BC for cheap cross-border shopping and holidays because the $CAD will be worth less than $0.50 $USD.

You'll get to elect your senators rather than having them appointed by the elites.

38. State that treats you like grown up, not a nanny

Albertans are freedom-loving people. Why should they be over-regulated and talked down to by a government that thinks it knows what's best for its people and treats them like babies? The American society treats you like a grown up by default.

No more of your tax dollars going to support the government-backed Canadian Brainwashing Corporation.

40. No more forced CanCon

These might be some unusual times but July has been right on cue with the hot and humid weather along with some random downpours. For both, I had to make slight adjustments to the ear loops to fit more snug. #sofsdesigns has a space to put a 3rd layer for filter and nose band. It has its pros especially in high heat to choose whether to add that extra layer. #hoplagogosses has a nose band and is 3 layers fitted which is good as already all done so very convenient and the nose band is good quality. The black cherry one is a free trial from my friend @surprisesdephoebe who has been trying to make her version of the best mask suitable for her family and kindly made me one to try which turned out really well. Back to the office doesn’t really have much to talk about. I wasn’t exactly excited about it since the whole public transit thing is rather stressful mentally. Gardening Update

All the garden vegetables are doing fairly good. Everything’s have some kind of vegetable growing. We have an abundance of cucumbers and Hungarian Wax peppers. I’m hoping that at some point we’ll get more than the one or two squashes. The downpours will hopefully help.

Quick Road Trip to Ottawa

I didn’t take any pictures but I went to Ottawa for quick Chinese grocery store run since I had some things that I needed but some Chinese grocery stores here don’t have a lot of. At the same time, it was mostly also a chance to take care of a wrong delivery item from an online order for Eddie Bauer that I didn’t want to deal with the hassle of calling and getting a Fedex pickup and whatnot. Its just nice to take a road trip since there’s no other form of travelling that seems reasonable in the current times. I got a chance to pick up a hiking bag on discount at Eddie Bauer, half a dozen of donuts from Maverick Donuts, ciders from LCBO as well as the above-mentioned grocery run.
