Gains, Greens, and George
Hey readers! I’m Aidan McKiernan, and I’m studying abroad in Ireland with the Big 10 STEM and Irish Studies program with UCD. We are coming to the end of week 4, and it’s been a good one. There was a ton of physics class this week, but luckily we are finally finished with all of our labs! We started off on Monday with a short multiple choice test, which I think I did pretty well on. I also got my essay finished for Irish History, so I have no more assignments to worry about until exams. This week we didn’t have a Saturday trip, so I went to town with a group of friends. Then finally on Sunday I got up really late, so I haven’t been doing much.
Early this week, I located the nearby gym and finally started doing some workouts with my friend Noah. There's a bigger gym that’s about a 15 minute walk away as well as a smaller one that's just 3 minutes away. I prefer the smaller one, as it’s got all the equipment I need and I can go straight to Centra afterwards for a post-workout snack.

Our Tuesday trip was to MoLI, the Irish Museum of Literature. We got a tour of the exhibits and got to see the original copy of Ulysses by James Joyce. There was also a pretty garden area out back with a funny statue.
Tumblr media
Me attempting to recreate this statue’s iconic pose (photo by Carson).
After the museum tour, we had a lot of time to hang out in town. We were right by St. Stephen’s Green, so we took a quick walk. The weather was great that day, and the park was very pretty.

On to some weekend antics. On Saturday, I went to a bakery to pick up a cake with my friend Carson. He put in an online order for his birthday, but they didn’t have his cake for some reason. I decided to get a nice pastry while we were there, and I very much enjoyed it.

The pastry in question, with vanilla pastry cream and strawberry jam.
Later that day I went out with a group of friends. Some of them had COVID the past week, so it was exciting to see them again. We first stopped at a burrito place for dinner, which wasn’t that good honestly-- I don’t really like burritos though. We later stopped at a Wetherspoons to hang out and get some drinks for cheap. After a while there, we started looking for a club that would let us in. We got in a huge line to this place called The George, and luckily they let us in. I didn’t really know what to expect, but this was definitely a club. There was loud music, cool lights, and tons of people dancing. It was a bit overwhelming at first, but I got used to it reasonably quickly and had a pretty good time. After we left, the world felt half-muted and my ears were ringing for a while. Can’t say for sure if I would want to go again.
Tumblr media
Partying at The George with Nate and Noah… kind of (far left).
We got back really late, and I knocked out hard. I got up this Sunday at around 5pm (wow). I’ve been chilling out most of today. I ordered some Chinese food for delivery and just stayed in. It was an eventful week, but that's about all I have to talk about for now. Thanks for reading!

Biden’s First Day
Tumblr media
Want to get The Morning by email? Here’s the sign-up.
Good morning. The Biden administration begins to address the six crises that the new president described in his inaugural address.
Near the end of his inaugural address yesterday, President Biden named six crises that the U.S. faces: the virus, climate change, growing inequality, racism, America’s global standing and an attack on truth and democracy.
“Any one of these will be enough to challenge us in profound ways. But the fact is, we face them all at once,” Biden said. “We will be judged — you and I — by how we resolve these cascading crises of our era.”
To get started, Biden announced a longer list of Day 1 executive actions — 17, in all — than any previous modern president, as The Times’s Michael Shear points out. The Biden administration is also asking for legislation by Congress. But here’s our explanation of how the new president is trying to make immediate progress:
The virus
Biden signed an executive order yesterday requiring masks where he has the authority to do so — in federal buildings, for example — as well as a separate order creating a White House position to improve the government’s response to the virus.
He also made clear that he was ending the Trump administration’s hostility to global cooperation by halting the U.S. withdrawal from the World Health Organization. Biden is sending Dr. Anthony Fauci to the group’s meeting today as the head of the U.S. delegation. “It’s an interconnected world,” my colleague Apoorva Mandavilli says. To succeed in combating the virus, “we have to coordinate with other countries.”
Biden is also asking Americans to wear masks for the next 100 days. One question he hasn’t yet answered: How will he persuade more Republican voters — many of whom are skeptical of masks — to wear them?
Climate change
Biden signed two executive orders on climate — one that recommits the U.S. to the Paris climate agreement and another that reverses Donald Trump’s hostility to environmental regulations. “No president has brought in this many people at the start of an administration to work on climate change,” Lisa Friedman, who covers climate policy, said.
Still, these actions are only first steps, Nathaniel Keohane of the Environmental Defense Fund told me. Reversing Trump’s actions is significant, he added — but the world needs more ambitious steps to curb the use of greenhouse gases that are causing so much damage.
Inequality and racism
Biden’s biggest attempts to reduce economic and racial inequality will require congressional legislation. But he took some early steps yesterday.
He has extended moratoriums on evictions and student-loan payments that the Trump administration had put in place. He also ordered federal agencies to root out racially unequal policies. “We have great evidence from economists that tearing down barriers to advancement for men of color and women of all races fueled huge amounts of growth in the United States in decades past,” The Times’s Jim Tankersley said.
Biden also sought to undo several of Trump’s anti-immigration policies. Among the moves: refocusing deportation efforts on those undocumented immigrants who have committed crimes in the U.S. “Trump, on the other hand, decided that anyone in the country illegally should be arrested and deported,” Miriam Jordan, who covers immigration for The Times, said.
Democracy, truth and America’s role in the world
In his address, Biden repeatedly stressed the importance of truth and included a veiled but obvious reference to Trump by criticizing “lies told for power and for profit.” And at her first White House briefing last night, Jen Psaki, Biden’s press secretary, said: “There will be moments when we disagree … but we have a common goal, which is sharing accurate information with the American people.”
Biden signaled his emphasis on diplomacy by embracing the Paris climate accord and World Health Organization. Another big move to improve the U.S. image around the world was his immediate repeal of a signature Trump policy: the so-called Muslim travel ban. It had restricted nearly all passport holders from several Muslim-majority countries — including Iran, Libya, Somalia, Syria and Yemen — from entering the U.S.
A Morning Read: An ode to Gottlieb’s Bakery, whose Georgia-made rye bread rivaled any deli in New York City for those who grew up with it.
From Opinion: Access to the coronavirus vaccines has been unfair and inequitable. But if you’re offered one, you should take it — no matter how undeserving you may feel, Melinda Wenner Moyer writes.
Lives Lived: Margo St. James was one of the nation’s most prominent advocates for sex workers, devoting her life to decriminalizing prostitution and destigmatizing its practitioners. She called her organization COYOTE (for Call Off Your Old Tired Ethics). She died at 83.
PLAY, WATCH, EAT
What to Cook
Earl Grey tea and orange zest add a citrusy, floral essence to this buttery cake.
What to Listen to
The 20-year-old British singer-songwriter Arlo Parks talks about making music that strikes the perfect balance of happy and sad.
The pangram from yesterday’s Spelling Bee was multiply. Today’s puzzle is above — or you can play online if you have a Games subscription.
Here’s today’s Mini Crossword, and a clue: Head-butt (three letters).
Thanks for spending part of your morning with The Times. See you tomorrow. — David
P.S. A hidden haiku in Abraham Lincoln’s 1861 inaugural address, recently spotted by @nythaikus: “Though passion may have / strained it must not break our / bonds of affection.” And one from Biden’s: “We can join forces / stop the shouting and lower / the temperature.”
You can see today’s print front page here.
Today’s episode of “The Daily” is about the inauguration. On the latest “Sway,” Isabel Wilkerson discusses America’s caste system.
Claire Moses, Ian Prasad Philbrick, Tom Wright-Piersanti and Sanam Yar contributed to The Morning. You can reach the team at [email protected].

Local Competition Analysis - Vegan + GF Sweets
Cafe Pyrus Outpost – 150 Roger Street, Waterloo
Online Reviews: 4.7 stars out of 5
Pricing: Moderate
Products: cinnamon buns, sausage rolls, muffins, bars, cookies, croissants, cupcakes, turnovers, and more.
Website Experience: Simple layout and design. Collaboration with local farmers and community projects. Easy online ordering system for pickup on Saturday, including pricing and product descriptions.
Market Positioning: Simple and delicious vegan cafe fare. Lots of gluten free options as well.  Down to Earth, not too fancy or pretentious. Ethical and environmentally friendly –  organic fair-trade coffee & espresso, biodegradable/recyclable packaging, sourcing local organic ingredients where possible. Focus on connection with the community by offering a pop-up outdoor farmers market every Saturday morning. Pays their employees a living wage. The only place to buy vegan croissants in the area.
Strengths: The Outpost has very positive ratings. The main restaurant location has an excellent social media presence on instagram (578 posts & 4056 followers) and facebook (6040 likes). Cafe Pyrus can help promote the new Outpost location. COVID-friendly service through a walk-up takeout window and pre-order pickups. Photography is nice and bright on the website on social media accounts.
Weaknesses: Relatively new Outpost location/bakery operation (opened March 2019) which is an extension of the original Cafe Pyrus restaurant (established 2009), so it’s still developing a customer basis and recognition in the community. The Outpost has a somewhat small social media presence on instagram (293 posts & 1856 followers) and facebook (543 likes). Could post to social media more often and increase marketing. Spelling mistakes on the website and social media accounts.
Ce Food Experience – 136 Moore Ave S, Waterloo
Online Reviews: 4.6 stars out of 5
Pricing: Moderate
Products: Hand-crafted bread baked daily, custom cakes, cupcakes, bars, quiche, tarts, biscuits, cookies, cinnamon buns, peanut butter cups, and more.
Website Experience: Minimalistic approach with natural-looking colours and photos. Link to their social media accounts. Strong emphasis on allergen-free baking. Section for creating and submitting a detailed custom cake order. Story about the owner and why she opened the bakery on the main page of website.
Market Positioning: Local artisan bakery that offers a wide and changing variety of sweet and savoury selections. They can cater to dietary allergies such as gluten, dairy, eggs, and nuts. All goods are hand-made from scratch on site and they do lots of seasonal baking. They offer an in-store retail business and pre-order baking pickups. Customers are mainly from the community of the Region of Waterloo.
Strengths: Great reviews. Strong presence on social media: instagram (1977 posts & 2902 followers), facebook (2318 likes). Their products look delicious, rustic, and hand-made.
Weaknesses: Website only has a description and prices for cakes, but not for anything else. Lack of information on their overall product selection on website. The photos of their baked goods on instagram seem to lack a commonality. Their product range is so vast that it is a bit overwhelming. The website and photography are a tad amateur and budget-friendly looking. They do not offer delivery services as far as I can tell.
Dolled Up Desserts – 142 James St N, Hamilton
Online Reviews: 4.9 stars out of 5
Pricing: Moderate-expensive range. The baking mixes are the most affordable product they offer. The most expensive product is their cakes.
Products: custom cakes, cookies, bars, baking mixes, muffins, bars, macarons, mini donuts, ice cream and drinks.
Website Experience: Beautiful, fun, and very feminine looking (Pink!). Classic vintage vibe. High-quality video of their store, products, and interview with the owner about the story behind the business. Shop section where you can order and buy their cake mixes – Canada wide shipping. Detailed menu and description of products. They have free tips on allergen-free baking plus recipe videos. Section for signing up for their news letter (when you sign up you get free shipping on your first order).
Market Positioning: Feminist-owned company that only hires women. Makes desserts and baking mixes that are all-inclusive meaning that everyone can enjoy them. They are free of gluten, dairy, eggs, nuts and soy products. Strong emphasis on Research and Development – continually innovating new and unique flavours. Online ordering of their baked goods through UberEats and Skip the Dishes. They deliver from Scarborough to Niagara Falls and everywhere in between.
Strengths: Strong professional brand-development. Strong presence on multiple online social media platforms: Youtube (66 videos & 4030 subscribers), instagram (951 posts & 7896 followers), and facebook (2635 likes). Delicious and high-end looking treats in unique flavour combinations. Very trendy.
Weaknesses: The business could potentially be off-putting to males, and therefore ½ of the market.

#CommunitySpirits: Greyhound on the Green.
#CommunitySpirits is a series of interviews with businesses that have been helping local people during this difficult time.
On St James St in Clerkenwell, sits independent cafe The Greyhound on the Green. I speak to Becks, one of the owners, about what she and fellow owner Ross have been doing to support residents.
Tell me about your business’ history.
I contacted the council about renting a little spot, went for an interview and to present my vision and we went from there, opening in April 2019.
Our cafe is tiny, we only have outside seating. But from the beginning my focus was about using fresh, local food at accessible prices. We only work with like minded businesses who share our ethics when it comes to helping others and being kind to the environment. Our coffee comes from Redemption Roasters, we get our milk the old school way (in glass bottles from the milkman) and bread from a local indie bakery. We make everything from scratch, including cakes and brownies! We have a wonderful loyal customer base who have helped build a magical community around our little hut.
How was your business affected by the CV-19 outbreak?
We felt pretty early on that it was the responsible thing to temporarily close, and we're glad we did. We work in such a small space that we just couldn’t guarantee our own or our customers’ safety. But it was the hardest decision I've ever made.
What are you doing to help your community during this time?
Sadly we can't offer anything to our cafe community, which breaks my heart as these people have helped us grow from the very beginning.
We work in Clerkenwell but we live in Highgate. We weren’t comfortable commuting to work on public transport as we don't drive; we need to keep these spaces as safe as possible for our wondrous key workers. We decided to try and support our suppliers, help keep ourselves afloat (we are the unlucky 5% who are not entitled to anything from the government) and help those in isolation in our wonderful local community.
So we've set up a zero contact delivery service selling things like Oatly, eggs, flour, coffee. pasta, cleaning products and a super essential - chocolate! We take payment online, I pack the order and Ross cycles it, he calls the customer from the pavement and gives them a wave so that they can safely collect their order from the doorstep.
We've remained true to our values, especially in what we are selling. For example, our antibac spray is actually a concentrated capsule with zero plastic that you shake up in a bottle of water. Now is a scary time but it doesn't mean we have to forget about the environmental impact of our actions.
Tumblr media
Why did you decide to set up this service?
We had to do something. Overnight, we went from having a small business (which wasn't exactly profitable but we could pay our suppliers and pay our bills) to having nothing. It was really frightening and we couldn’t have anticipated it. That aside, it's been a godsend to keep busy and feel helpful. We have customers who are carers or single parents, who can't queue outside Sainsburys. It feels productive to provide a service even if it isn't our usual one. Also, It's been amazing getting to know so many people who live nearby.
How can people engage with what you are doing now and in the future?
They can follow us on Instagram, tell everybody they know, or just drop us an email! In the future, they can choose us. Never has your spending power been more valuable to small businesses. Without the help of the community around us, who choose to buy their Oatly from Greyhound on the Green, rather than online or in supermarkets, we would go under. Every single penny counts right now and it's a beautiful thing to see those who can, choosing to support independents.
Thank you to Becks and Ross who have been so kind and creative with their time and efforts. In adversity, they have seen a way to maintain their business but also help a new group of people around them. Do make sure to order from Greyhound on the Green should you be local and make sure to visit them when this is over.
Do you know of a local business that is helping your community? Why not email [email protected] with details so they can be celebrated.

Is the Middletons Party Pieces business in peril?
Discretion has always been the watchword of the Duchess of Cambridge’s parents. After a decade and a half in the public eye, Michael and Carole Middleton have become rather good at it.
Whether it is about their daughter the future Queen or their grandson the future King, inquiries are met with the same enigmatic smile and a polite shake of the head.
So it hardly surprising that they are being discreet about what is happening to their family business. With their silence, however, envious tongues are wagging.
For over the past two days, reports have been circulating that Party Pieces, the mail order and online firm they started on the kitchen table three decades ago, is in trouble.
It is claimed half its staff have been shed, that others may be at risk and that there are fears for the company’s future. Under the headline ‘Party over, Carole’, one report said: ‘Kate’s mum axes staff as business struggles.’
The reality, I can reveal, is somewhat different. Far from contracting her business, Carole Middleton is intent on growing it and she is in talks with investors over plans to expand it.
But for the Middletons, trading is infinitely more complicated than for most small businesses. Any slip risks being magnified or exaggerated, impacting not just on the bottom line but also on their unique position as royal in-laws.
The parents of Kate Middleton, Michael and Carole started mail order and online firm Party Pieces from their kitchen table 30 years ago
The company offices of Party Pieces are located on a farm in Berkshire, pictured in 2012
No one is more conscious of that than Carole. And it is why she has been so alive to ensuring the family can never be accused of exploiting their quasi-royal status for the sake of the family firm.
Had they done so, those invitations to Balmoral and Sandringham would long ago have dried up. But they have not, and Prince William has played a key role in ensuring that Mike and Carole, as he calls his in-laws, are not only part of his and Kate’s life but also of the Royal Family.
Paradoxically, Mrs Middleton’s determination not to be seen milking the royal connection has contributed to the success of Party Pieces. Her one rare attempt at promoting herself and the business in a magazine interview last Christmas was a study in reticence and an example of awkward publicity.
But it had the ring of authenticity as she spoke about why and how she launched her company and how all the children — Kate, Pippa and James — had helped.
In truth we learned more about her from what she didn’t say than from what she did.
What it did, however, reveal was that behind her modest and unassuming face lay ambition, dedication and doggedness.
In the years since she began, Party Pieces has been transformed from a one-woman outfit supplying home-made goody bags to the parents of her children’s school friends into a dynamic, successful brand.
An advert celebrating 30 years of the family business showing a 1989 picture of Carole with her three children, Kate (far right), Pippa (second from right) and James (second from left)
Of course its association with the royals has helped. But it was established long before Prince William had clapped eyes on the Middletons’ elder daughter at St Andrews University.
And it has been reliably successful, providing enough money to send all three Middleton children to fee-paying Marlborough College, via prep schools and later university, holidays in Mustique, skiing trips to the Alps and even the leg of a modestly successful racehorse.
It has also bought them a spacious and comfortable wisteria-clad manor house in Bucklebury, Berkshire, and a Chelsea flat with no mortgage where all the children have lived at some time or another.
And it is from Party Pieces that everything springs, lifting the Middletons from relative financial modesty to multi-millionairedom, in turn propelling Kate into a new social sphere, which gave her the confidence and affluence to win a Prince.
An ad for Party Pieces as it appears on the firm’s website featuring Carole Middleton
Party Pieces was founded in 1987, taking the Middletons from their unassuming semi-detached house and their purely salaried existence — she was a flight attendant, he a British Airways dispatcher — to all this.
‘My memories of those early days are very vivid,’ Carole told Good Housekeeping magazine. ‘We worked out of a studio in the garden that was a glorified shed.’
For the first year business came through word of mouth at the school gate and playgroup. But her big break came when she used the children’s book company Red House Books to send out flyers.
‘We put out 10,000 leaflets, which gave a huge boost to our orders.’ Party Pieces was on its way and the garden shed was soon too small.
After locating to a small start-up unit in Hungerford, they moved to a hamlet near their home in 1995. They have been at a converted barn at Child’s Court Farm ever since.
Although it was very much Carole’s idea — Mike didn’t join the firm for a couple of years — she insists it is a family enterprise.
All the children have worked for the business. ‘Catherine started the first Birthday brand, Pippa set up a blog, as we didn’t have one, James came up with the idea of personalised cakes and got them off the ground for us.
‘Because they all grew up with me working, Party Pieces has been very much part of our lives and what we talked about.’
Carole and Michael Middleton at St Mary’s Hospital as their daughter the Duchess of Cambridge gave birth to her son, Prince George
So what is the truth about the rumours over Party Pieces and what about the claims that half the staff have been laid off?
It was reported that a publicity agent, a web designer and a search engine optimiser had been axed. It was also claimed that three warehouse staff had been laid off before Christmas.
In fact the firm employs more than 30 people and as one insider said: ‘Losing three is hardly half the staff. We’re very confident about the future.’
Last night, Carole told a family friend: ‘Yes, a couple of people are leaving but this is our much-loved family business which is far from failing. All of the changes we are making are to help protect the business for the future.
‘We are in talks with some very exciting investors who believe in our plans to grow the business.’
The news effectively scotches suggestions that the couple might, in fact, be looking to sell the business and retire. ‘Over the years Carole has survived some pretty wretched snobbery over her business and over her modest upbringing but the fact is Party Pieces has provided her and her family with a fantastic life,’ says a friend.

Pippa Middleton is seen walking her baby Arthur Michael William in Chelsea earlier this month
‘She and Mike are not flashy but they are proud of their success.’
In many ways she represents everything that is good about opportunity in Britain. She took a risk with a small amount of capital and it paid off, not through luck but through sheer hard work.
Although there are no publicly available figures or company accounts to pore over — as a partnership they do not have to file any such information, it has been claimed the business is worth up to £30 million.
As to the rumours, a company spokesman said: ‘Party Pieces owes a duty of confidentially to its employees and cannot comment on speculation. We can confirm the business is currently working on an exciting development partnership, and the company’s structure is being reviewed to align with its financial targets.’
For her part, Carole says: ‘If you have a good idea and you have lots of energy and a supportive family, then I think just try it.’
It certainly worked for her.

Discovering the Greatest Gifts For Modest Gentlemen Designed Simple
dárky Does finding the very best items for guys truly subject? How significant are the items we give? Can people appear through the neatly tied bows and crisp, patterned wrapping paper and see the authentic you and attach a this means to it all? Is it really that critical to your occupation, romance or affect more than others? Definitely! The artwork of acquiring the finest gifts for modest adult men may well appear a reasonably straightforward procedure, but when it comes down to it, it is not. Offering inappropriate presents or presents that might offend can damage any emerging or previously forged relationship. Modern study concludes that buying a wrong reward for a man can put a relationship in jeopardy. This was based on the assumption that 'gifts act as markers of interpersonal similarity for each acquaintances and shut relationship partners...' (Dunn et al 2008). In this experiment, men's analysis of undesirable presents revealed that they saw the present giver as significantly less comparable to them. Subsequently they thought their future collectively with these kinds of a particular person would be drastically shorter. I guess the lesson for all of us is that undesirable items mirror badly on our romance and us as these shut to us presume we know them properly sufficient to uncover the excellent present for every single event. It also pays to don't forget that locating a soul mate or 'kindred spirit' is thought to be central to a profitable romance and satisfaction (ibid. 2008). Exactly where we establish a similarity with a lover, buddy or colleague, it is human nature to associate this with better relationship satisfaction. We especially like to consider our partners are similar to us. So this reveals the possible harm that getting a undesirable gift can do because it damages that feeling of similarity when we get a undesirable present. Obtaining the finest presents for adult men regardless of whether modest or not is as a result, quite important in my belief. Do not eliminate coronary heart. Picking the very best reward for Xmas or any other situation need not be an arduous process as we will be seeking at how to uncover the ideal present for your dad, partner, son, male mate or colleague, especially if they are the modest kind. The regular epitome of the "modest person" is a single whose lifetime is marked by simplicity and has a humble viewpoint of himself. To put it far more bluntly he is generally a straightforward man with straightforward preferences - not that it is a undesirable point. It can be practically impossible to acquire items for this variety of person, as you are continually next guessing your possibilities. Will he like it? Will it be acceptable? It could come as a shock to most girls that men typically have easy tastes and are sentimental contrary to common belief. Even though they may possibly prioritise requirement from time to time, they also have an psychological connection to certain factors and occasions. Coming again to our modest guys, these gentlemen are usually not quite materialistic which often poses troubles for anybody who attempts locating the excellent reward for them. We can draw some similarities between the essence of gift supplying and our modest blokes. The art of present providing can be traced back again to historic Roman festivals wherever communities gave each and every other simple items this kind of as sacred evergreen branches through celebrations. With time and as all points do, there were being improvements to the forms of gifts, which then integrated presents of honey and cakes symbolizing prosperity and sweetness expected in the coming year. Presently, gift-providing has turn into massive business in particular at Xmas with the advent of St Nick, cutthroat advertising by the media and its capability to sensationalize this as soon as modest gesture into a buying frenzy from early November till Xmas Eve. Ironically, there are even now some cultures where there is no present supplying insanity throughout Christmas or any other events for that make a difference! It is common apply to be thankful to the powers that be for the included many years when it will come to birthdays and a special meal, generally rooster, rice and gentle drinks for lunch to mark Xmas. At greatest the more youthful little ones get new outfits to dress in to church. With this track record in head, is it any surprise that some men and women prefer the uncomplicated issues in lifestyle? Despite the fact that the males we are worried about are modest, it definitely does not mean that you can grab the exhausted aged socks, jumpers and cologne schedule to mark just about every event. With possibilities only a mouse click on absent, we need to place an conclusion to classic mundane present concepts. Selection is the spice of lifetime, it may possibly be an aged stating but that must help us refocus and provide out our perception of creativeness although seeking for the finest items for adult men. As these kinds of, reward acquiring must be a course of action that needs the inventive expression of our thoughts for the recipient, depending on the romantic relationship of program, which must be a pleasurable experience relatively than be noticed as a chore or demanding time. Buying items only gets tough when still left right up until the final minute. When you make the choice to get a gift, you want to preserve in thoughts the celebration, the recipient's personality and most importantly, your price range. I can't emphasize this ample. What are his passions or hobbies? Is he an active outdoorsy kind of person? Is he a car or truck fanatic or keen on artwork, fishing, golf or sports mad? Does he enjoy audio or flicks? There are also a lot of excellent reward concepts for the modest traveler or adventurer. A weekend scheduling in a mountain cabin or romantic getaway are all choices that can be explored depending on your budget and his passions of training course. Choosing exceptional gifts that thrill him this kind of as experience items may well confirm successful for you in the prolonged operate. We all know it is straightforward to get any person enthusiastic about something if you pin it to an present enthusiasm. Exceptional gifts, individualized presents, top quality seating tickets for his favourite crew, a reward certification to a attractive cafe will imply a great deal a lot more and exhibit the receiver that much more thought has absent into the collection procedure. Whoever coined the time period 'boys and their toys' is undoubtedly a genius. My husband's ideal good friend, a renowned medical doctor and modest guy I may well incorporate has a famous rule, which rings real of most men if not all. He never ever buys his kids any toys that he are not able to play with. Funny that! As most of us have learnt, adult men are but little ones in more substantial muscular bodies. Therefore, when purchasing them presents, even for the modest guy, hold this gem in intellect. Absolutely everyone has a position design. As these, all gentlemen can be classified into the James Bond kind who adore all gizmos and his spirit of adventure. This is manifest in gentlemen who enjoy and obtain and or function with every thing digital, stated medical professional falls neatly into this group Walker Texas Ranger, John Wayne or GI Joe wannabes who in real life may well be our guys in uniform policemen, army staff or firemen the MacGyver and the Do it yourself Mr. Fix It crew who revel in their energy instruments creating and developing points. Aidan Gray has picked the winners in the #AGwithanedge Contest!!!
I will be announcing who won the contest -----  SOOON!!!!!
Get ready!!!
And Now…on to Part Two of the Not Quite Royal Wedding.
Last Sunday when I wrote the story on the Pippa Middleton – James Matthews wedding, the couple had barely been married for 24 hours.  There were hardly any leaked details about the ceremony and the two receptions mostly because the couple had asked their guests not to post any photos to social media such as Twitter or Instagram.
I wrote that perhaps Pippa & James had sold the rights of the wedding story to a magazine such as HELLO! or PEOPLE, but, both new issues came out this week without any new reception photos.
Still, over the past week, a few tidbits about the wedding have leaked!!
Judging by the amount of comments left on the first story – there are a lot of you who must be as interested in the wedding as I am, so…
here are the latest updates on the Not Quite Royal Wedding!
First, most interesting is that a few of the Menu Cards from the reception were auctioned off on EBay – starting out at a $600 opening bid!!  One of the menus was Prince Harry’s, the others were Pippa’s and James’ menu cards.
A smart waiter probably pocketed these forgotten and left-behind menu cards and now he stands to make a small fortune for it.  Unfortunately, the Middletons threatened to sue over these “stolen” menu cards – and they seem to have disappeared from Ebay.   Forget about that windfall.
The seller said the menus were printed on thick paper and the names were handwritten.  Pippa’s menu had a bit of spilled food on the card but James was clean!!!
Here is a photo of the actual menus:
From the menus, we now know what they served at the dinner/dance:   it was a surf and turf menu of trout and lamb with cheesecake, Champagne and something special for the groom:
Affric Trail 10 Year Highland Malt.
The Affric Trail Highland Malt Scotch Whiskey comes from the Scottish area where James’ father owns the Glen Affric estate and where he is the Laird.  Eventually though, James will inherit the title Lord Glen Affric and Pippa will be Lady Glen Affric.  Until then she may call herself Mrs. Matthews of Glen Affric, The Younger.  Easy for you to say!!
The cheesecake appears to have come from the Glen Affric estate itself.
It’s really nice how much the menu celebrated James’ Scottish roots – even if they are “newly bought roots.”
While there were a few photos taken by the press, like this one of the flyover by the Spitfire, not much else was seen from the evening party.
The bright spotlights were the security team’s idea and this was a “brilliant” idea, pun intended.  The spotlights made it almost impossible for the press to take photos although we were able to see the photo show that was screened on the back of The Manor house.  This photo looks like it was some type of abstract design.
This was taken the next morning after the party – with the blue velvet sofas and green velvet pillows all in a big mess.  Notice the big spotlights on the side of the marquee.    I was sure this was the last photo we were going to see of the glass marquee.
I even cropped this photo of the cherry tree and flowers.
And, then there was this tidbit - Kate had studied art history when she went to the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, where she met Prince William.  Apparently she graduated with top grades  - but unbeknownst to the public is that she is also quite the artist herself!  Kate is known to be a good photographer – most of the official photos of her children were taken by Kate, as opposed to by a society photographer.  Pippa & James’ wedding program featured a pen and ink sketch of the charming church, St. Marks, drawn by none other than Kate!    The only photo of the drawing was taken from this picture, above, of Jane Matthews, James’ mother – who carried the Order Of Service Program as she walked from the wedding.  The news of Kate’s sketch leaked out to the press, so of course, everyone wanted to see it.
This is the only photo of Kate’s sketch!  Wish it were bigger and clearer!!
Kate was thanked for the sketch at the dinner/dance:
James Matthews said at the reception:  “To Pippa’s sister, such ability – a beautiful drawing of St. Mark’s church in the Order of Service.”
Reverend Nick Wynne-Jones, who officiated at the ceremony,  said it was a “lovely piece.”
And then, there was this interesting detail about the party favors:
(OK, I think it’s interesting!)
Pippa’s handsome brother James Middleton has a company called Boomf which specializes in personalized marshmallows.
Boomf is located in a grain store near his parents’ home, The Manor.   The marshmallows are ordered online, they are first personalized, and then they are sent out as gifts.
These marshmallows look like suckers.   Darling!
Boomf also sell personalized chocolate.  You upload your photo and it is put onto the gift chocolates.
And also, Boomf  sells “Flutter Cards” – cards where butterflies flutter out when they are opened.
According to Hello! Magazine,  all 350 wedding guests received Boomf marshmallow gifts with Pippa & James initials on them.
The company is somewhat new and Pippa’s husband James Matthews has invested over $100,000 in the company, purchasing over 12,500 shares.  The company has been having profit & loss issues and in 2015, it posted losses of nearly 930,000 pounds!   Last year, it took out a 500,000 pound loan from Barclays Bank.    Hopefully this bit of Wedding PR will pay off and set the company on the right road.  James Middleton also had a cake company and a cake-making kit company – both of which went under.  Still, with this large amount of  debt – Boomf will need to sell a LOT of marshmallows to get out of the red!!
Some of the reports from the wedding have been proven to be Fake News.  It was said that each guest first had to have their Photo-ID checked and then they had to give a password before they were driven to the reception at The Manor.  A guest has since said this was a false report.
Another Fake News Report was the story of Prince Harry driving back to London after the ceremony in order to pick up his girlfriend Meghan Markle.  Not True.  Meghan was, in fact, staying in a guest room at Englefield House during the wedding ceremony.   She had attended the champagne reception right after the wedding.
The above photo of Prince Harry and Meghan driving to The Manor for the dinner/dance is the only photo of Meghan from that night – so far!
And then there was this photo!  Once it was released of Kate and Prince George and Princess Charlotte in the car leaving the wedding – the public was up in arms.  George wasn’t wearing his seatbelt!!!!  Horrors!!!
The car ride was just around the corner and the driver was going five miles an hour with no traffic at all.  Still, the public went nuts.  He is, after all, the future King of England.
And then there was the story of the wedding florists.  It was reported that Lavender Green did the flowers at the church.  It is unknown if they also did the flowers at the champagne reception at Englefield House or the evening dinner/dance.  Their truck was spotted, above,  driving by the church.
Here is a photograph from Lavender Green’s portfolio.  They obviously do gorgeous rose sprays, like what they did for Pippa’s church ceremony!  So pretty!
Here is another photograph from Lavender Green’s portfolio.  Gorgeous!
It wasn’t until later that we found that there were actually OTHER florists for the dinner/dance.
There were some new photos taken at the church of Pippa & James’ flowers.   I can’t get enough of their church flowers!!  I think they are just lovely.
Here are the new photos:
Here you can see more of the floral design at the church.  Notice the circle of roses around the columns.   And notice how at the center of the church, they paid extra attention to that area with tall greenery growing up sides of the arch.
A close up.   This is incredible - masses of roses tumbling down the stairs!
The sprays of roses under the stained glass.
There was a spray under each window.
One last large view of the church with the arch and columns.  Just beautiful!
Here is an aerial view of St. Marks and Englefield House.  I didn’t realize the house is so close to the church.   The champagne reception was held after the ceremony – in a tent that was probably erected right behind the church in that large plot of land where the lone evergreen tree is.  After the ceremony was over, guests were seen walking out behind the church.
The only photograph of the tent where the champagne reception was held after church!!
And The Manor, where the evening dinner/dance was held.  The kitchen terrace was cleaned up for the party – and if you look carefully you can see the row of flowering bushes behind the kitchen.  It looks like a secret garden back there -  must be beautiful!!!
Security was tight around The Manor.  It was reported there was a complete circle of security protecting the house.  The paparazzi must have used really long lenses to get the evening photos of the marquee.
There were security cameras that were placed in the greenery, which were supposed to be hidden!!
Once the spotlights were turned on, they proved highly effective against the paparazzi.
All hope for seeing the inside of Pippa’s glass marquee was fading fast when suddenly, there appeared …
three fabulous photos on Instagram!
YES!
Pippa and James had asked all their guests not to post any photos.  The wait staff had to sign confidentiality agreements.  Who posted the three photos to Instagram?
Apparently it was the internationally famed floral designer Djordje Varda who was the guilty party.
Who???!!!?
Varda lives in St. Barts where James Matthews’ family owns the exclusive resort Eden Rock Hotel.  I am assuming he is friends with the family because so many of the weddings on his portfolio took place at their resort.
Varda claims on his web site that he has been named one of the most talented floral designers in Europe – and he does have the awards to confirm this.
He won the “Best Floral Designer in Europe” 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 and Ad Magazine voted him Best Floral Designer in 2010.
So, he certainly has the credentials to have been hired to do the flowers for the dinner/dance.
The Instagram photos of the reception were a surprise – they announced the heretofore unknown florist.  Apparently Lavender Green only did the day flowers while Varda designed the night ones.  Here is what he said on Instagram:
“Let me tell you the story about a special wedding for very special and lovely people…..The Cherry Blossom Fairy Tale.   To create a special wedding you need beautiful flowers and you need to feel Love.”  #pippamiddleton #bucklebury #pippamiddletonwedding #lovemyjob #passion
“Many thanks to Rob Van Helden and his team! Thank you guys for your help and hard work!”
This message, along with his photos are now long gone off Instagram.  As soon as word got out, the photos disappeared.  I wonder who called him and asked him to remove them?
Pippa or her mother?
And how embarrassing is that?!?!
Varda teamed up with Elton John’s personal florist Rob Van Helden to create the “Cherry Blossom Fairy Tale” for Pippa and James’ reception.   Later Van Helden left this response on Instagram.  (Thank GOD for Instagram!!!)
“Thanxx SO much for allowing us to be part of it!!!
Love from us all at RVH xxx.”
Once the word got around the photos were on Instagram, everyone and their brother regrammed the photos – and the Daily Mail also published them.  At that point Varda quickly deleted his own photos – probably so he wouldn’t get sued.
But of course, the internet lives on forever.  Here are the photos of the Cherry Blossom Fairy Tale Wedding Reception:
And here is the first photo from the marquee.  Gorgeous cherry blossom trees.  I have no idea if they are real or fake?   I assume they are fake, but they look SO real.  Lovely,  lovely, lovely!!!!  Just gorgeous.  Wow.  I don’t think I’ve ever seen a prettier reception.   Through the glass you can see The Manor, with its courtyard.  Must have been beautiful at dusk.   Isn’t this gorgeous!!!??!!??!!   Worth the wait, right?
OK. I’ll confess.  The only reason why I wrote Part Two was to show these photos!
A closeup of the roses and peonies.  Wow.  BOTH!!!  Roses AND peonies!  Huge roses mixed with small roses.  And dark pink mixed with light pink and lilac, peach, and white.  Beautiful.
Another view.  Masses of flowers on the tables beneath the trees.  I like the celadon chairs.  Perfect touch with the decor.  The only thing I don’t care for are the table numbers.  I wonder if those were removed later?
Honestly, I don’t blame Varda for posting these photos!  I would have too!!!  He took a gamble and won because after he erased his photos – they still live on the internet for eternity.
Care to see a bit of Varda’s portfolio?  After all, he is Europe’s Best Florist!
A party by Varda with masses of different flowers, grouped together, but not mixed, which is really interesting and different.
Here, the entrance to the wedding, decorated.
With a view like this, you don’t need large flowers.  I like the hanging spray.
Flowering limbs on the ceiling.
So pretty!  Hanging votives.
Climbing flowers.  Hanging votives are his trademark I guess.  That view is just gorgeous.
More hanging votives.
What a cake!!!!
Indian wedding.  Notice the columns – those are INCREDIBLE!!
The Indian Wedding at night.
First birthday!
A huge thank you to Djordje Varda for posting the pics of Pippa’s party!  Tongue twister.
Even if these two don’t think so:
And here is the happy couple, a little worse for wear – a day after their wedding – at the airport, leaving for their honeymoon at The Brando!!
The atoll where The Brando resort is.  This is such an incredible photo – you can really see the formation of the atoll!!!
Myself?  I think this is just gorgeous.  I love the juxtaposition of the raw wood park bench and table with the dressy flowers.  I’m going to save this photograph for my daughter!!   As if!!!
