Distinctive Style is a non-profit zine. It will be put up on Gumroad for pay what you want- any and all money raised will be going to the Brave Space Alliance.
Signing Up: All you need to do to sign up is fill out this google form asking for some basic contact information and to get a gauge on how many illustrations we’ll have. The deadline for sign-ups is August 31st. If you miss the deadline or see this later, don’t be afraid to DM me @LK_Darkthare, but unfortunately there would be no guaranteed spot in the zine past the 31st.
Link to the Google Forms!
Theme: The theme is Neoscum fashion- this can be a blast from our past, a look at the funky-fresh fashion of the future, or even historical costumes! In the form, you’ll find a selection of characters you can choose from, including the main Neoscum cast and any NPCS. There are no off-limits characters.
Deadline: As this is a non-profit zine and not paid work, I understand it is low on the priority list for a lot of people! It is a no-judgement space if you end up needing to withdraw, or ask for an extension. That being said, the deadline is January 17th, 2022.
Format: 5.5 x 8.5 submission (6x9 page size), 300DPI, CYMK. Portrait orientation only. I have a PSD template that will be sent out via e-mail to all contributors. Traditional work is accepted, but it has to be scanned in at 300DPI. Illustrations can be either black and white, or colored. The zine will be in PDF format, but I’m planning to print off copies for contributors (When I have the funds, so it might take a while after completion haha).
Content: The zine is centered around fashion illustrations, and as such, all pieces entered should focus on the entire outfit and character. You do not have to include any background elements or props- you could just leave it white if you wanted to! If you would like to draw a group photo or want to include a background, that’s awesome and more than welcome.
Have a question? Awesome! Send us an e-mail at [email protected], or a DM @LK_Darkthare on twitter.

I always believed the reason Oracle never defeated Robotnik was because he's able to see multiple futures, and he saw a future where he defeated Robotnik instead of the Royal family. And maybe the outcome of that future didn't turn out so well??? At least that kinda explains why the Oracle never did anything against him. ¯\_(ツ)_/ ¯
Something like that. The best I could figure is that the nature of the oracle prevents him from doing anything THAT direct with his powers- he can harrass Robotnik, scare him and tell him stuff, but he can’t actually see that, and with his power to see the future he saw that Sonic and co being separated from their mother was best in the long run, probably seeing something like that one mirror world happening if they grew up as royals. Having a good parent alone isn’t enough to guarantee that children grow up to be good as well after all.
...which frankly is incredibly complex and convuluted and good lord that was a very poorly handled plot point.
Ah well. Still better than Penders.

The Waste Land - Epigraph and Dedication
The Waste Land Introduction
Internet friends, I have returned.
When I first read TWL, the epigraph was one of the scariest bits.
DON’T FREAK OUT BECAUSE IT’S IN TWO DIFFERENT DEAD LANGUAGES. Eliot was all into having a “classical education,” a lot of which was learning Greek and Latin. So here it is:
“Nam Sibyllam quidem Cumis ego ipse oculis meis vidi in ampulla pendere, et cum illi pueri dicerent: Σίβυλλα τί θέλεις ; respondebat illa: ἀποθανεῖν θέλω.”
It translates as, “For on one occasion, I myself saw, with my own eyes, the Cumaen Sybil hanging in a cage, and when some boys said to her, ‘Sibyl, what you do want?’ she responded, ‘I wish to die.’”
This passage comes from a super old Latin book called The Satyricon, which is arguable one of the oldest novels, except that we only have chunks of it. It’s something of a buddy roadtrip story and these guys have some wacky adventures, including the World’s Craziest Dinner Party. This section is called Trimalchio’s Dinner, and this specific piece of dialogue comes from Trimalchio himself.
Trimalchio is that guy at the party, the one who likes to mention that he knows French like it’s no big deal except he obviously thinks it is a big deal. Except instead of French, Trimalchio uses Greek. Trimalchio is really insistent that this happened, because he says “I myself, with my own eyes.” He has to say three times that he saw this, even though he obviously didn’t actually go and meet the Cumean oracle hanging in a cage.
Eliot establishes from the get-go that to be his reader, you have to have all the classical education he did. You need Greek and Latin and to have read some of the big name works in those languages. Maybe it’s all in jest, though, since out of all of the passages he could have picked, he quotes the most puffed-up braggadocio he could find. Is he just being a know-it-all and showing off--reminding his readers that they are inferior--or is he making fun of himself, showcasing the ridiculousness of show-offs, both fake and genuine?
I haven’t really talked about the content of the epigraph yet, aside from Trimalchio’s need to assert himself as the narrator three times--ego, ipse, and meis. This is really interesting, because the narrator is going to be a conglomerate mass of identities from here on out. The first sentence we get in the poem has the subject I, ego, appropriate for a poem that details the dissolution of identity.
The Sibyl is an interesting choice, since she’s a prophetess. (Cumean just means she was the prophetess in Cumae.) She was super important to the Romans (thanks, Virgil) so Trimalchio claiming to meet her is a big deal. Except the Sibyl we see in the epigraph doesn’t look like Virgil’s Sibyl as much as Ovid’s Sibyl. In Ovid’s Metamorphoses, she made a deal with Apollo to live as many years as grains she held in a handful of dust, which was a thousand. Except she didn’t ask for eternal youth, so she grew older and smaller until she could be put in an ampulla, which translates as a “basket,” “vessel,” or “jar.” Or, the way people often translate it in the Satyricon, a cage.
No wonder she wishes to die! She’s been alive for centuries, watching the world move on without her. Living forever, or even a thousand years, would suck. She’s a prophetess who is forced to see the future unfold. And even though the Sibyl vanishes from the poem after the epigraph, the idea of fortune telling and future-reading will come up later in the form of Madame Sosostris. Eliot is simultaneously calling us to look to the future (through the all-knowing Sibyl) and the past (through allusion).
And finally: the dedication. “For Ezra Pound, il miglior fabbro.” Or, “the better craftsman.” Pound was one of Eliot’s contemporaries and had a large hand in editing and revising this poem. Pound is a cool dude, and you should definitely read some of his poetry.
So there you have it: the epigraph, the dedication, four languages, and already two allusions: Satyricon and Ovid’s Metamorphoses.
Thanks for joining me, and next time, we’ll actually start the poem!

In all honesty, I never really considered that the Oracle was truly evil because outside of the entire Beginnings saga, he doesn't really DO a whole lot to warrant that line of thinking. I actually feel like the writers of those three episodes just wanted to make seem like he was a bad guy that the other writers of the show didn't plan on.
Oh, I don’t think for an instant he was meant to be evil or anything like that, but how a character is envisioned and how they are perceived by the audience are two entirely different things. When someone is meant to be on the side of the heroes and is then seen doing something that makes their lives much harder- or in this case is the direct cause of all the bad things that happens to them- it makes people wonder.
I mean just look at Locke. Penders envisioned him as a man put in a difficult position who did what he had to do for the greater good. Everybody with a brain wisely saw it much, much more differently than that given the repeated deception and the fact that his actions put Knuckles and everyone else’s lives in vast levels of danger, to the point where he was pretty much a hero only thanks to authorial fiat.

If Sonic "needed" a mother (he didn't), I rather wish they would have at least waited long enough to possibly appropriate Aleena from Sonic Underground. The idea of a queen living in the shadows who had connections to oracles and who-knows-what-else estranged from a superpowered son seems like it could have opened the door to much more interesting possibilities than what they actually went with. Ken really blew the parent load so early and to such anticlimactic effect.
You’re giving Penders too much credit to think he’d be involved enough with either Sonic as a character or any aspect of the franchise outside of his own little corner to think he would have ever willingly tried to incorporate anything from Underground. In fact, he claims that he an the current writers actively resisted such when orders on from high came to try and tie the comic in.
Whether it would have been a good thing or a bad thing is up in the air, but it does not change the core of the fact that he rushed into Sonic’s parents far too quickly and in a very clumsy, hamfisted way... and then proceeded to do nothing of value with either of them. It’s almost like he made them just so he could claim he gave Sonic parents...
