Anyways, Caleb should seek a better therapist who can teach him better coping mechanisms like going out for walks, yoga, baking, or some other fourth thing instead of browsing social media where there’s a good chance he can run into something that makes him uncomfortable.

The American Privacy Rights Act has only just been introduced as a concept, and there's not much information on it at this moment as it's not been introduced as a proper bill yet. However, it does show some promise, as it appears to intend to extend consumer privacy rights over their personal data, as well as prohibit certain data transfers without a user's express permission among other things. Keep an eye on this one but it does appear to be a potential positive.

H.R. 7891: KOSA (The Kids Online Safety Act). High priority NO vote. Increases internet surveillance and has high risk of internet censorship.

H.R. 7890: COPPA 2.0 (Childrens Online Privacy Protection Act amendments). Claims to protect children and push parental oversight but also requires additional data collection and storage.

H.R. 5778: Sammy's Law of 2023/Let Parents Choose Protection Act. Requires large social media platforms to have access to applications that will allow parents to track the things that their children interact with on social media. Increases tracking and sensitive data collection, allows higher parental curation/tracking and privacy breaches of their children, restricts internet navigation.

H.R. 6149: Protecting Kids On Social media Act. Prohibits kids under 13 from using ad-based social media (already required in the TOS of many social media platforms). Claims to not require age verification through third party means or otherwise, but highly likely that this could end up being the case as the easiest solution.

H.R. 6429: The SCREEN Act (Shielding Children's Retinas from Egregious Exposure on the Net Act). Purports to be a bill meant to prevent teenagers and children from accessing pornography online. Mandates pornographic websites to have strict age verification to prevent minor access (again, more unsafe and unconstitutional age verification possibilities). The terms of the act include not even strictly sexual content but also that which is deemed "obscene". Which could be dangerous in the hands of someone who might consider completely normal LGBT+ images and content to be such. (Very similar to the law that was just passed in Texas regarding such sites).

Consider the slime:

Slime is such an interesting microcosm of abundance. The first play slime that I know of is play dough, which is made using flour and water and salt and sometimes food dye to simulate dough. This lets kids play with dough without jeopardizing the bread for a meal. It's a good texture!

Next, there's oobleck, which is a cornstarch and water slurry. It has interesting properties, acting as a solid when struck and a liquid when held. This toy exists not only as a simulacra of dough, but as a substance in its own right.

Next up we have school glue slimes, which are texturally in between those two substances. They are not made of edible substances, and are used in sensory play. They became more popular with the rise of parenting blogs offering after school "life-hack" style content, but existed much earlier.

Then we have school glue slimes (originally another semi-educational, do-it-yourself home craft) as popularized online, targeted not at young children but at older kids and to some extent adults: enter themed and scented slimes.

1. I think slime is neat. No beef with slime or slime enjoyers.

2. I didn't cover Nickelodeons Gak or Floam, as these pre-date 2023 slime culture, and are not as influential on it, at least in my experience.

3. Slime TikTok cannot be easily separated from "small business" TikTok. Most slime content creators are trying to sell their products, or are reviewing other creators products. It's not just a subculture, it's a market. It's arguably all-ages content, and not strictly child-directed content. That doesn't mean it shouldn't be examined critically for fueling disposability consumer culture in children. I'm just not writing that right now.

To keep you all in the loop, there are further bills to watch out for and speak out against in California if we want to maintain our internet privacy, safety, and ability to access content anonymously and away from the eyes of the state.

California Senate Bill 1228, "Large online platforms: user identity authentication" as proposed by Senator Steve Padilla. While it's supposed purpose is to combat internet misinformation on social media platforms, especially in an election year, its wording implies many nefarious things. This bill does explicitly what Senate Bill 976 threatens to do implicitly.

"SB 1228 would require large online platforms to seek identity verification from users with large audiences or spreading large amounts of AI-generated content. The platform would be required to label the users as “identity authenticated” or “identity unauthenticated” to better inform Californians of the source of information they are consuming, while still allowing users to remain anonymous if they desire. More specifically, it would require users with more than 25,000 followers or who are sharing more than 1,000 pieces of AI-generated content to verify their name, phone number, and email. For users over 100,000 followers or those sharing more than 5,000 pieces of AI-generated content, the platform is required to seek verification of a user’s government issued ID. The bill would also allow users to opt-out of receiving posts from unauthenticated accounts."

Yes you read that correctly. While this bill specifically targets AI generated content and people with large followings, it also specifically calls for government issued ID verification in plain language. Even if this would apply to only a few people with these massive amounts of numbers, we cannot allow this to become a set precedent. If we want to protect online anonymity and a severe overreach of privacy and free speech, then you need to call your representatives and tell them that on no uncertain terms should this bill be allowed to come into California law. What happens here could affect many other places within the country. Do not let our legislators' targeting of social media as a band-aid for proper regulation and preservation of an anonymous and informed internet bring about something that could affect us all, especially as our free speech and ability to use the internet without reservation becomes an increasingly more valuable commodity.

Additionally, there's an assembly bill which could also have repercussions on our valuable free internet.

California Assembly Bill 1949, the California Children’s Data Privacy Act. Proposed by the trifecta of Attorney General Rob Bonta, Senator Nancy Skinner, and Assemblymember Buffy Wicks.

"AB 1949 would amend the CCPA to prohibit businesses from collecting, using, sharing, or selling personal data of anyone under the age of 18, unless they receive informed consent or unless doing so is strictly necessary for the purpose of the business. For users under 13, this informed consent must come from a parent. The bill authorizes the Office of the Attorney General to enforce the law and seek injunctive relief, damages, or civil penalties of up to $5,000 per violation."

While this bill is less outwardly hostile to internet privacy and rights as the aforementioned two, the focus on determining age and requiring parental consent for an account could be further twisted down the line. If the state wishes to create laws that prevent the collection and sale of user data by online businesses and social media, then it should be done for the population as a whole, not simply focusing on minor users. Don't allow this one to slip under your radar either.

Call them, email them. Do whatever you can. Even contact the proposers of the bills if you really wish to make a statement to them too. Keep informed, don't panic, and do your part to keep a private and safe internet.

If you're living in California and are concerned about the recent passing of the minor social media ban in Florida, then I urge you to write and call in to your state senators and assembly members in rejection of CA Senate Bill 976, the Social Media Youth Addiction Law.

While this law doesn't go specifically as far as the Florida law of outright banning anyone 14 and under from using social media and requiring a form of ID in order to have access to an account within the state, the law does pose troubling potential future legal repercussions.

This bill's primary focus is on the "protection" of young people who use social media from "addictive" features for the sake of their mental health. However, it intends to do this by implementing strict features such as parental controls which would require all minor users to have parental controls overseeing their accounts to limit their access to "addictive" feed features, as well as enforcing time periods where minor users will not receive notifications as well as mandatory time limits on how long minors can access social media that are restricted by the parents.

I need not tell you that this is a dangerous undertaking considering the only way that companies under this regulation could 100% ensure this level of compliance would likely be to follow the same ID verification systems which are feared to come about in Florida within the next year.

So if you live in California and don't want us to fall into the same trap which could strip away social media privacy and rights, I'd urge you to find your state representatives (state senators especially) and urge them to vote NO on CA SB 976, the Social Media Youth Addiction Law.
