Blog Post 1: The journey before Psychology

(This blog post may be a little personal because I'll be sharing personal stories about myself in correlation to Psychology.)

An introduction to my fascination with psychology.

I honestly did not expect that I'll be in a course related to the field of psychology. Even before my elementary days, I have always wanted to study any course in hard sciences, such as pharmacy, biochemistry, and biology. And while psychology interests me, I didn't see myself working in this field before, which is why I chose to remain fascinated by it without considering everything related to it as my course once I enter college. Fast forward to my high school era, and this is when my curiosity in psychology grew bigger, for I, myself, needed some help with my mental health. I was not diagnosed as having any mental health issues, but I knew I was not fine during those years. My mood varied and changed within seconds, I had experienced waking up tired, and I even had constant sleep paralysis that I still encounter up to this day. To summarize everything, those years were when I realized how big of an impact psychology has on society. Of course, I did not think of psychology as a useless course, like most Filipinos, sadly; however, it's true that experiencing the need for service it can provide firsthand can actually increase how you appreciate something, and in my case, I had it the hard way.

A sudden change of heart

Those were the times that pushed me to add behavioral sciences and psychology as my course choice at the university. Maybe having the knowledge of psychology can help me deal with myself, and those that I felt before might gradually improve once I understand it at a higher level of understanding. I didn't even expect I’ll be accepted into behavioral sciences. At that time, what I thought was maybe this is a sign that everything will soon fall into place and that I might have the chance to improve my state and well-being.

Who am I before Psych 101?

To answer the question of who I was before Psychology 101, I am an ordinary person seeking guidance on how to handle myself better—to understand the reasons that caused everything that happened to me over the past years. I may have the fault for not seeking professional help, but I know that my being here and taking up this course can help me a lot. Before Psychology 101, I was also a student dreaming of learning things to be applied not only to myself but perhaps to other people in the future. Since I know that my course can equip me with these skills, why not use it to help other people who are also experiencing things that I did experience as well? If the knowledge I may gain here may be beneficial for others, then why not use it, right?

In Conclusion:

Accept it or not, psychology nowadays is an integral part of society that needs more experts to supply services for people who need help, like me. Despite society being in denial of how vital it is for us, we still cannot deny the existence of mental health problems that are prevalent within societies. This is why I, as an incoming student in Psychology 101, am thrilled to learn to help myself and possibly other people by sharing what I may get throughout this semester.

Beginning a Journey of Minds

March 2, 2023

2nd semester has begun and it’s the start of me taking my studies for Psych 101 and other majors. What I can say is that I am not yet prepared to be back to studying after a long vacation, but I need to be back from reality. To be frank, I don’t know if I can survive this subject and if I will ever like it until the end of the semester, but I hold this desire in me to learn the components of this subject. However, I have this part of me that feels unmotivated to learn and whose only goal is to pass Psych 101. With this feeling, I aim to avoid this kind of attitude during the formal start of lectures in Psych 101. I also want to share to the readers of my blog what is my knowledge about psychology before classes begin.

If you were to ask me what does psychology mean when Psych 101 hasn’t formally started, my answer is that it studies how we humans think. It’s actually true and that’s what psychology is all about in a general perspective, but if you would ask one who is an expert in psychology, they might give me a deeper answer compared to mine, who is just a mere student. In fact, what I know about psychology is like a mere fraction of the entire field, like I only know that Sigmund Freud is one of the main contributors of psychology and that exposure therapy is a form of therapy to overcome your phobias by facing them.

Clearly, what I want to tell is that psychology for me is an untapped field of vast knowledge and it’s because that I have fixed my interest mainly on natural sciences. I was not fond of subjects where interaction is maximized. My introverted personality was more inclined with nature. Still, it’s not enough to judge whether I like the subject or not. Maybe I would grow fond of it once I have learned the basics of it.

I want to share what are my goals and expectations in Psych 101. First, I want to enjoy this subject. It may sound personal but it’s hard to learn things without you enjoying the context of it. How can I learn if I don’t like the subject in the first place? Second, I plan to use the learnings I will gain in real life. Just as what they said, what information you get should be relevant in practical use. Even though the subject will teach me the basics, I hope that I can pick up some practical concepts to be used in real life. Last, I expect that I will learn a lot from this subject and not be lazy because I don’t want to waste this opportunity of learning psychology. Starting today, I need to device a plan on how can I attain the set of goals and expectations I listed.

Simula na ng 2nd semester at dito na magsisimula ang aking pag-aaral sa Psych 101 at ang iba ko pang mga majors. Masasabi ko lang ay hindi pa ako handa na bumalik sa pag-aaral galing sa mahabang bakasyon, pero kailangan ng bumalik sa realidad. Sa totoo lang, hindi ko alam kung kakayanin ko ba itong asignaturang ito at kung magugustuhan ko ba hanggang sa dulo ng semester, pero mayroon akong pagnanasa na matuto ang laman ng asignaturang ito. Mayroon akong isang parte sa sarili na tinatamad na matuto at ang tanging layunin lamang ay makapasa sa Psych 101. Nais kong maiwasan ang ganitong ugali habang nagsisimula na ang pormal na talakayan sa Psych 101. Gusto ko rin ibahagi sa mambabasa nito ang aking kalagayan sa kaalaman ko tungkol sa Psychology.

Kung tatanungin mo ako ngayon ano ang psychology na hindi pa nagsisimula ang Psych 101, ang sasagutin ko diyan ay pag-aaral sa pag-iisip ng tao. Tama nga naman kung titignan mo sa malawakan, pero kung tatanungin mo ang mga dalubhasa sa larang ng psychology, eh mas makakapagbigay pa sila ng mas malalim na sagot kumpara sa’kin na estudyante pa lang. Bukod diyan, ang tanging sikat na tao na kilala ko lang ay si Sigmund Freud, dahil kadalasan siya ang naririnig ko kapag ang usapan ay psychology. Lumalabas din sa isip ko ang exposure therapy na ang ginagawa ay ineexpose ka sa ano man ang kinatatakutan mo, pero hindi lang ‘yan ang mayroon sa psychology.

Halata naman sa sinabi ko na kakaunti lamang ang alam ko sa psychology at siguro dahil sa aking walang interes sa larang noong una. Mas interesado pa ako dati sa larang ng natural sciences hanggang ngayon.Ngunit hindi naman masama na matutunan ko ang mga basics ng psychology. Baka nga pag natutunan ko na ‘yung basics ay mas maakit ko pa ang subject na ito.

Nais kong ibahagi rin ang mga layunin at mga inaasahan ko sa Psych 101 na makakamit ko sa dulo ng semestre. Una, nais kong maenjoy ang mga matutunan at natutunan ko sa asignaturang ito. Personal nga siya pakinggan dahil damdamin ang gustong makamit dahil mag-aaral ako ng asignatura na malayo sa gusto ko. Paano nga naman ako matututo kung hindi ko maeenjoy ang subject sa una palang? Pangalawa ay balak kong magamit ang matututunan ko sa subject na ito sa totoong buhay. Ika nga nila, dapat may saysay ang mga nakukuha nating impormasyon sa praktikal na gamit. Kahit ang ituturo palang sa akin ay mga basics, sana ay may mapulot ako na prakitkal na konsepto sa totoong buhay. Huli sa lahat, inaasahan ko na marami akong matutunan sa asignaturang ito at hindi ako masanib ng katamaran, lalo na’t hindi lang ito ang aking majors, kundi ayoko isayang ang oportunidad na ito na matuto ng psychology kahit malayo ito sa gusto ko. Simula palang ngayon, kailangan ko nang magplano sa ano ang dapat kong gawin para makamit ang aking mga layunin at inaasahan.

It’s so funny you thought DK was a Sag rising because I use to think so too! But then a whole bunch of people I thought to be Sag rising turned out to be Gemini with Leo 4th and Aqua 10th like that Bangchan guy and Soyeon from Fromis_9 so I went 👀 and I knew I had done something wrong. But I totally agree with Pisces too. And Aqua would also make sense. I just thought he was Sag for so long and then when I really broke it down, it just didn’t add up like any of the other ones I suspected so 🤷‍♀️ who knows. But I was so surprised to see somebody that was a Seventeen fan into astrology. The Astro Seventeen community is so sparse. I try to find confirmed rising signs everyday and there’s NOTHING. Only Dino and S.Coups are confirmed. Sorry if this is bothersome, I just was surprised to see a DK post.

continuing: I retract my statement. There’s a confirmed Pisces Ascendant named Koo Jung Mo from from Produce X 101 and CRAVITY which means DK can’t be any other one but Pisces. Case closed.

You know hat’s funny? Right after I published the ask I thought ‘mhm kinda felt he could have been Gemini rising too, but it’s probably because of the heavy Sagittarius energy I got’ so I decided to not include it after all, but I think it akes sense that someone turns out having the rising of the opposing sign you have gussed, after all they are smiliar to each other! To be very honest I only listened to their music from time to time, but honestly after you introduced me to DK I think I might dive deeper into the fandom, they look like a really fun group and maybe I can contribute to the seventeen fandom in the future as well hehe And don’t apologize, you’re not bothersome at all! I don’t know anything about the Cravity members (just listen to their music), but do you refer to the similarities regarding the two and that’s why you think DK is a Pisces rising? Anyway, feel free to let me know! But yeah, I think DK radiates big Pisces energy, but generally speaking whenever I have a more extroverted (or at least very energetic) Pisces at hand it feels harder to pin down their Ascendant, solely based on personality at least

Bleach - Name Games

Continuing with the zanpakutou posts... One that seemed to get broadly misinterpreted is,

Katen Kyokotsu(花天狂骨)

...written as 花: “Flower,” 天: “Heaven,” 狂: “Madness,” and 骨: “Bone.” Viz translated this as "Flower-Heaven Bone of Madness," and later changed it to “Flower Crazed Heaven Bone Spirit.” But what I keep seeing overlooked is that Kyoukotsu(狂骨) is the name of a youkai; a white haired elderly man emerging from a well to act upon a grudge, cursing people who would drink from its well. (It’s also a homonym with the word for Kyoukotsu(胸骨) “Sternum” written “Breast”+”Bone” which is played on in Kyokotsu’s design for the anime as a skull-clad busty woman.) “Bone-Spirit” actually does seem like it’s referring to the youkai, but then it scrambles up all the other adjectives and nouns.

Kyoukotsu(狂骨) is also a slang term in some regions for someone in a state of looking wild and and in noisy disarray --which basically refers to either a a mentally unstable person, or a raucous drunkard. I think the logic in that might have to do with the idea of the Kyoukotsu cursing its well, and the idea that a belligerent or gibbering drunk being that way from having drank something evil... i.e. from a cursed well? Given the nature of zanpakutou as reflections of their wielders’ inner-selves and Kyouraku’s disposition as a frivolous drinker, it may have been meant to imply a darker side to that.

I’ll be honest, I can’t tell if Katen is supposed to evoke “A Flower (from) Heaven” or “A Heaven (made/full of) Flowers.” They more or less imply the same tone, but it’s the difference between a singular item or a whole landscape. The only more specific phraseology I can find that would point in one direction over any other is katengecchi(花天月地) which refers to a scene of flowers blooming in moonlight, and kind of makes me lean more toward the landscape imagery of a field of flowers so beautiful that it is like heaven. But I don’t know that those terms are even really related.

Together, at least to me, it seems to give off the impression of getting sloppy drunk in a field of flowers, which seems pretty in line with his general vibe.

But adding to these themes, his release call is notably longer than most, and appears to be specifically split up into one call for each of his two identical swords (and Ukitake’s the same, but noticeably Ukitake’s sword can’t be interpreted as two different names, like what they did with Katen and Kyoukotsu). These and Ukitake’s, more than any other zanpakutou calls, and more like the hadou spells, lean into Kubo’s affinity for poetry --something he also indulges in in his tankobon poems.

花風紊れて, 花神啼き: “Flower-Wind* in disarray, Flower-spirit(s) call out/cry/wail”

*I think... think... maybe... this is supposed to be an abbreviated form of Kachou-Fuugetsu(花鳥風月), written “Flower, Bird, Wind, Moon” which is a term used in classical Japanese art to refer to “the beauty of nature” as subject matter. It doesn’t have to literally include Flowers, Birds, the Wind, or the Moon. Basically, it just refers to a nature scene meant to display the beauty of nature (as opposed to being a slice of life or a strictly historical depiction, or other non-aesthetic-primary focus.)

Also the construction Kashin(花神) here written as “Flower kami*” doesn’t seem to refer to a specific deity, but worth noting is that it’s a homonym with Kashin(歌神): the kami* of Waka and of song --Waka being a traditional Japanese form of poetry, which are also sometimes translated as “muse” if that gives you a better sense of what they are. Functionally they are closely related, because it’s the spirit of nature that inspire poetry/song about the beauty of said nature. Moreover, as discussed previously, Shunsui has a distinct theme of both flowers and of music, so both feel kind of relevant here.

*I feel like this is kind of a Japanese mythos 101 thing to point out, but if you’re not aware, Shinto being an animist religion means they believe in an innate spirit in basically all things. The word kami does not mean “god,” it refers broadly to that innate spirit that all things possess. The most powerful kami are analogous to gods in other religions, but a kami’s only real definitive quality is that it is a spirit and that is exists... the spirit of a flower has no power nor grand design nor will, nor any other quality that would make sense attributing to what we call a “god” in the West. But that doesn’t make it any less a kami.

Also the naki(啼き) here is the same root as the nake(啼け) that Urahara and Benihime uses. It can, in this context, read like “yelps” or “wails” or even “screams” but all in the tone of, “cries of distress.” (As opposed to quiet weeping; it’s “cry” as in the sound, not the tears.)

Also it’s kinds awkward but the verb midarete(紊れて) is the conjunctive form of the verb “to disturb” but I don’t know how to say that in English without throwing a lot of extra words into it, and I didn’t want to imply that there were more words and their implicit meaning involved.

And then...

天風紊れて, 天魔嗤う: “Heaven-Wind in disarray, Tenma* laughs/sneers/ridicules”

I feel like “Heavenly Wind” here is supposed to refer to something more specific than just the two words mashed together, but I can’t really find anything that clarifies this for me... But my first assumption is that like kamikaze(神風) “Divine Wind” it’s meant to describe a favorable wind, sent to protect or relieve someone in need; hence it being “spoiled,” “thrown about,” or “dispersed” being a bad thing, in the same tone as the Flower-Wind phrase above. It’s the same verb, but i feel like “disarray” of something like “a wind” doesn’t visualize clearly.

And the specific term Kamikaze went from a general term to a specific title to refer to the two notable historic typhoons that coincidentally sank invading Mongolian fleets in the 13th century. For their immense power and convenient timing they were attributed to acts of the divine defending Japan. In turn it’s why the Japanese kamikaze pilots of WWII were so named.

*Tenma is the Japanese name of the Hindu Mara, of Buddhist mythos. He is a kind of temptor figure presiding over both lust and desire as well as hesitation and fear such that they interfere with a buddhist's ability to meditate, focus, and adhere to their virtues. In particular he's responsible for having tempted Siddharta Gautama Buddha with beautiful women. (in some iterations said to be the deva's own daughters.)

Yes, it’s the same Mara as the SMT franchise, but the giant penis monster Mara isn’t based on any real mythology, it’s actually a pun on the Japanese Mara(摩羅), written as “chafe/rub/polish/grind (against) thin-silk,” and used as a term meaning “obstacle to Buddhist practice” in accordance with the actual Hindu Mara’s role in mythology. I’ll be honest though, I don’t know if the construction is supposed to reference masturbation or dry humping. Maybe both?

So, trying to work all this into something a little more readable in English, what I think the overall vibe of this is, is...

“The-Beauty-of-Nature is being thrown into disarray, and the Flower-spirits wail; Saving-Graces aren’t going to arrive, and ‘The Devil’ laughs(mockingly).”

The theme here is that the beauty of nature suffers, a heavenly blessing is interrupted, and a demonic figure laughs at it: There’s nothing to sing about, there’s no relief, the tempter wins. It’s actually a little weird because thematically it feels very much the opposite of what his shikai actually does. I feel like he wanted Shunsui using his shikai to be that moment of serious-ing up, but by the time he came back around to actually using it, he wanted to keep Shunsui’s powers more in line with his personality and save the change of mood for his big bankai reveal instead. but we’ll get to that in a bit...

For context, Kyouraku Shunsui’s own name reading as “Capital(City) Music, Flower Water” points to his lazy personality: he’s a big city type who’s all about lounging and luxury and sweet indulgences. So, his sword release by contrast is those declaration that playtime is over, Kyoraku is done being lazy.

Broadly speaking I never really liked Masashi Kudou’s anime-original designs for most of Bleach’s filler arcs, other than just not really aesthetically fitting with Kubo’s design sensibilities(all Kudou’s designs look like bad cosplay with big swatched of empty solid space, flat colors, no color balance, and no implicit weight or texture) they don’t really gel with most of their names and themes, but Katen Kyoukotsu in particular got kind of tragically reduced to a generic waifu design. I honestly really hate that Kubo went and ran with that design for Shunsui’s bankai.

And speaking of bankai...

Karamatsu Shinjuu(枯松心中)

is tacked onto the end of the same name as the shikai to make the new bankai name. Kara(枯) and matsu(松) just read as “Withered/Withering PineTree.” Fun fact: when chapter 647 first ran in Weekly JUMP, the title was Kuromatsu(黒松) which is the specific species of “Japanese Black Pine,” Pinus thunbergii, which is the specific iconic tree used in Noh theatre.

And Shinjuu(心中) is written as “heart”/”mind” and “inside,” meaning “inner thoughts/feelings” but in the context of the bankai’s theatre theme refers to a “double suicide”/“lover’s suicide.“ It’s a theme in classical Japanese theatre and literature (but notably in Japanese puppet theatre) that when lovers, or sometimes parents and children are unable to live together due to social restrictions, they will tragically but nobly opt to die together with the expectation that they will be reunited either in the afterlife or in the next life via reincarnation.

I like the idea behind his powers and the progression of forcing people to play by the rules of children’s games, to forcing people to play by the “rules” of theatre plots. But I was surprised his bankai didn’t come with the drawback of forcing himself to abide the same limitations: they both get sick together, they both drown together, they both hang themselves, etc... The initial scene’s power walked right into this, but then the effect disappeared with the subsequent scenes...

All in all there’s just a lot going on in these names despite how little most of it ever really got addressed or elaborated on in the series. Like a lot of stuff that got sort of awkwardly shoehorned into the final arc it feels like it wasn’t really played out to its fullest potential, but it’s still a super cool assortment of themes and motifs to think about.

I'm not sure how you can even call yourself a radical feminist when you're saying that being "bored and horny" is a reason why lesbians and gay men would sleep with the opposite sex. This is exactly how homophobes say that gay people have exceptions and how sexuality is fluid.

First of all this is not radical feminist discourse, this is lesbian discourse. But if you wanna talk about that, I don't know how you can call yourself a feminist and believe women are marked for having sex with men. That having sex with men could be so relevant to a woman, it could actually change her sexuality. That's misogyny 101. As well as homophobia.

And oh I've never heard of lesbians being bored and horny and sleeping with a man, and I did not say that anecdote applied to lesbians, nor did I imply it. I was talking exclusively about gay men, because they're the ones I've known to do this.

Gay men do feel freer to do whatever they want and still be sure of their sexuality. I know gay men in my personal life who only date and get involved with men but have actively chosen to have sex with women. No one forced them, they just wanted a hole to fuck and they don't respect women so they did what they wanted and later retold the story as though it were funny and meaningless. My point bringing this up is not that these men are not bisexual. My point is that no one has questioned whether these men are gay. They are allowed to "self declare" and, independent of their behavior, no one is questioning them. There is no relevant discourse about this.

Maybe they are bi. Maybe they're misogynistic and treat women like sex toys as much as het men do. My point is that no one is making them question their every decision and behavior.

Unlike y'all do with lesbians.

With the goldstar discourse I was very obvious from the beginning that the circumstances in which a lesbian may sleep with a man are not willy nilly circumstances. This happens before they know they're lesbians. This happens because they feel some sort of pressure from society. This is not something they enjoy (obviously), this is often traumatic.

No actual lesbian would say lesbians can sleep with men casually, as part of their lives, forever. But lesbians can (and do) have a past of trying to conform.

What strikes me as homophobic is the implication that performing an action, even if the action is sex, would change or define someone's sexuality. Biologically and physically lesbians would be able to have sex with men. Societally, this is expected of them. Psychologically... I can only imagine how fucked up that is.

I am not talking about women who currently and continually have sex with men, and I've been very clear about this. I'm talking about women who have tried to conform, found that it was wrong for them, and never did it again, because they know they are exclusively same sex attracted.

I know at least one lesbian irl who literally said "people kept questioning me, so I forced myself to be with a man to see if I had been wrong about my sexuality. I hated every second". That woman allowed herself to experience the very violating experience of being with a man because people do not understand that women can exist outside of men, outside of dick. She loves and only loves women, though. What part of her desire to only ever be with women, her ability to only ever love women, screams heterosexual attraction to you?

I've been clear as well that I think the ideal world would be one where no lesbian ever sleeps with a man. But we do not live in a perfect bubble. Lesbians are constantly bombarded with the idea that they will never be full members of society unless they act heterosexual. I don't know how it's so impossible to conceptualize that someone can be pressured into consenting to something they don't actually want.

I've thankfully never been with a man, but I grew up in a conservative, relogious environment, I know that if I hadn't questioned everything I used to ake for granted, I could have wound up in a bad situation myself. I don't consider myself more sexually pure or clean than women who have been with men.

Sexuality is defined by attraction. Sexuality is biological and immutable. Nothing can change it. You are born as your sexuality, but society does try to change that if you're homosexual. You can try to change it yourself. But that won't be possible.

Also... having sex is not all there is to sexuality. Romantic love, being able to care for and about someone, is very much a huge part of sexuality. If one would never be able to love, to care about, to be involved in a relationship with someone of the opposite sex... They are not opposite sex attracted.

There is no split attraction model. Either you're all in, or you're not attracted to those people.

Do you think Sasshi will get a grad single from AKB as well & not just HKT? With how much she have contributed to the whole organization as a whole. Also to your answer to "hope" that this will re-negotiate exclusivity contract, I don't think it's going to happen tbh. As much as I am frustrated with HKT current predicament in suddenly losing 3 of their top member, I doubt this will honestly change anything on exclusive contract side.

(Cont) There’s a reason why they really enforce the exclusivity contract. To understand, let’s backtrack to i.o.i, the very first pd 101 group. There was no exclusive contract at this time. 1 of the member, have originally debuted with her own group prior to joining pd. After i.o.i is form, the said member miss 1 of the schedule, which turns out for a group photoshoot for her own group next single. This 1 event led the other 10 girl companies to do as they please & start pulling away the girl & debut them in their own group. After that initial 1 member, another 4 member was pulled away by their companies. The group felt like it was falling apart & they barely had 1 year to promote. After i.o.i debut song, their next comeback could only happen with only 7 ppl from the og 11. K-fans was afraid that AKS will pull a power play on OTR to start pulling the j-line away. They want to avoid what happened before. Just thought I want to shed some light for the exclusivity contract reason

Unlikely; like I said in my answer to the same question asked for Yamamoto Sayaka not too long ago, the historical precedent has been that the graduating sister group member only gets one graduation single with the group she is currently in (which, in Sashihara’s case, is HKT48), not with AKB48 or any other 48G group she may have a concurrent/regular position in.

I appreciate the explanation, but I still disagree strongly with the decision to force our members to abandon 48G and commit entirely to IZONE, apparently without compromise. If it were like I.O.I (or Iriyama Anna’s activities in Mexico), where the commitment is only for a year (or less), then maybe I wouldn’t have minded so much - the tight time frame necessitates that the members focus their efforts more urgently on the project and make the most out of the limited time available.

However, with IZONE, we’re talking about a whole two and a half years, which is a heck of a long time, more than twice that of I.O.I’s timeline. It’s long enough for an entire generational shift to occur within 48G, which could very well render Miyawaki, Yabuki and Honda entirely irrelevant to 48G by the time they return. Coming back to my point about time frames, IZONE’s 2.5-year-long existence leaves its members with far more wiggle room to pursue to their own separate endeavors. With so long until the contract expires, they don’t have to deal with the same tight deadlines like I.O.I had to. As such, I don’t think it’s unreasonable for the members to continue working with their original groups concurrently with their activities in IZONE.

It is time we stopped buying these… hit the manufacturers where it hurts… in their pockets…If we can have such strong feelings about mask-wearing, BLM..then channel your energies into this because if we don’t do something..we will be the losers, future generations will be the losers …Mother Nature will be the survivor…FACT!

On Bloomberg, Portman Highlights Ohio Tax Reform Tour

On Bloomberg’s Daybreak Americas, Senator Portman discussed the positive results from tax reform he’s already seeing around Ohio with employers making new investments in plants and equipment, increasing wages, paying bonuses, reinstating health care benefits, and adding more retirement benefits. As part of his Results for the Middle-Class Tax Reform Tour in Ohio last week, Portman visited GKM Auto Parts in Zanesville and during the visit the company announced it was reinstating health care coverage for their employees as a result of the passage of the Tax Cuts & Jobs Act. Portman has also visited Sheffer Corporation in Cincinnati, Wolf Metals in Columbus, Tremco in Cleveland, and Bruns General Contracting in Tipp City, all of which have made positive announcements because of tax reform. These are four of many Ohio companies that are increasing investments and strengthening worker benefits following passage of the historic Tax Cuts & Jobs Act.

PORTMAN ON THE REACTION OF EMPLOYERS TO TAX REFORM

“Honestly, I am encouraged. I am surprised by the fact that it has happened so quickly. I just spent a few days in Ohio talking to small business leaders all over the state. I was in a roundtable discussion with a bunch of guys who brew beer and thought they’d focus more on those issues. Instead they are talking about immediate expensing, the lower rate, what it means for them being able to expand. In one case, a brewer has never been able to offer health care before, and now he’s using the tax savings to offer health care insurance, and you hear it all over the state. I know there are a number of companies that have announced big changes including bonuses and pay increases and contributions to 401(k)'s as well as expensing, adding much more input into investment and productivity of workers, but these smaller companies are the ones we are not hearing from but they are out there and that is making a huge difference. I think that long-term, that is going to make the biggest difference -- investments and smaller businesses.

PORTMAN ON NAFTA NEGOTIATIONS

“We have touched gloves and are hopefully going to make progress on some specific issues that all three countries should care about. Modernizing NAFTA is very important, but we’ve got to keep it. I mean this an agreement that is critical in my home state of Ohio. Twenty-five percent of our manufacturing workers are now export workers. Our number one market by far is Canada, Mexico is number two. We send half of our exports to Canada and Mexico. One out of every three acres planted in Ohio is now exported. For farmers’ pricing, which is a big issue right now in rural areas of Ohio, we have to keep those exports up. We do not want those countries to look to other supply chains. It is hard to claw back those markets once you lose them. Many of us have made this argument to the president that yes, we can improve it and we should, but let's not walk away from an agreement that is critical to our economic future.”

PORTMAN ON ALUMINUM/STEEL TARIFFS

“Most beneficial would be targeted, not just to country but to product. Let me give you an example of this, in the electrical steel area, we have one manufacturer left, AK Steel. It’s very important having electrical steel because we need it for transformers and for our grid. It’s a national security issue. They have told me that there is an 101 percent increase in imports of that product just in the last year alone. And if this 232 investigation doesn’t lead to some relief for them, a small part of the market but a really important part, they are going to be forced to go out of business. That is an example of that we need to deal with some of the areas. We have had an essential increase in imports the last year and a lot of pressure not coming directly from China always but usually indirectly. China’s capacity is well beyond what they need for their own market. That’s an overcapacity issue. By the way, 14 years ago, China was maybe 15 percent of the global manufacturing of steel, now more than half of the steel in the world is produced in one country. They do not need it. They are pushing it out. Much of it is below their cost, which is dumping. Almost all of it is subsidized, which is also illegal under international trade deals. So we do need to address this issue, but we've got to make sure it is targeted so we are not increasing these costs substantially on the economy, on the processors of steel.”

PORTMAN ON GUN CONTROL

“I think that Congress will act, and I am a cosponsor of legislation to tighten the background checks. I support background checks, and I think that will happen now. I think also, when you look at what happened in the tragic incident in Florida, there are so many mixed, missed signs. It’s unbelievable what the law enforcement missed and what the FBI missed for that matter – so you need to tighten up the enforcement side as well.”
