(Pardon my snide) …aaaand apparently Tumblr doesn’t like my little 70s band spam reblog party, because every single post here displaying a YouTube video displayed a CAPTCHA image and the little “unusual traffic” message, and I submitted TWENTY CAPTCHA READINGS to decode text in weird, nearly-illegible font, and now it just has the message and won’t let me view videos or attempt to do more CAPTCHAs to make the videos available AT ALL. Because God forbid I make several posts on the weekend and have it be a stark difference compared to my middle-of-the-week activity when *gasp* I work in a hospital and don’t have much time for Tumblr between my twelve-hour shifts!
Edit: …And you wanna know why I make snarky, negative posts like this? Because this has happened 2 other times before… I can fill out every CAPTCHA in the world, and it won’t go away, but the moment I make a post complaining about it, suddenly ALL the videos come back. And after an hour trying to fix this, guess what got fixed the moment I made this post?

Taking your first steps in programming is like picking up a foreign language. At first, the syntax makes no sense, the vocabulary is unfamiliar, and everything looks and sounds unintelligible. If you’re anything like me when I started, fluency feels impossible.
I promise it isn’t. When I began coding, the learning curve hit me — hard. I spent ten months teaching myself the basics while trying to stave off feelings of self-doubt that I now recognize as imposter syndrome. It wasn’t until I started going to beginner-friendly meetups that I realized how coding collaboratively opens up amazing possibilities. You just need the right community of people to practice with.
For me, that community was Founders and Coders, the free JavaScript bootcamp that helped me to switch my career from copywriting to coding. Even now, less than a year after completing the course, I can hardly believe I’m being paid to develop software.
Collaborative coding is all about tackling problems and discovering solutions together. It encompasses techniques like pair programming, which several tech companies take seriously enough to screen for during their interview processes. It also cultivates useful skills that are tough to learn if all you’re doing is coding alone at home.
Whether you’re just starting out in the tech industry or you have several years of experience under your belt, collaborative coding never stops being useful. In this article, we’ll look at how these evergreen skills equip you for a long and successful career in software development.
Perfect Pairing
My first experience of pair programming was at a meetup for beginners called Coding For Everyone. Here’s how it works: people pair up, often with people they’ve never met, to solve JavaScript challenges together at the same laptop. One person assumes the role of the ‘navigator’ and proposes the code they think should be written. The other person, the ‘driver’, types out their suggestions on the laptop and asks questions whenever something isn’t clear. You continue doing this, swapping roles frequently, until the end of the two-hour session.
In theory, it was simple. In practice, not so much.
I found it quite distracting to have someone I didn’t know watching my screen while I typed, and I was reluctant to hand over control when it was time to swap roles. I found navigating even trickier. When an idea cannot go from your head into the computer without first going through your partner’s hands, every word that you say matters. It demanded a degree of communication from us both that we simply weren’t used to, and I felt sure we’d both learn more if we split up to work separately.
Fortunately, we stuck with it; I went again to the meetup the following week. I’ve since spent hundreds of hours pairing with dozens of developers, and I’ve learned more than I initially thought possible.
Pair programming is an incredibly fast way to learn. The magic of the method — once you get over the initial awkwardness — is that it yields immediate results. Some feedback loops, like bubbles in the stock market, can take hours, days, or even months to produce a correction. Pair programming takes minutes, if not seconds. When you misplace a semicolon, two pairs of eyes can spot the mistake faster than one. Need to search StackOverflow for clues about a rogue error message? You and your partner can each read different threads, halving the time it takes to find an answer.

For even trickier problems, mob programming can be a further step up. This method requires a cross-functional section of a team to gather around the same computer screen and brainstorm solutions in realtime while one person types.

While it might seem like an inefficient way to work, mob programming advocates such as Woody Zuill say it can actually save time by eliminating the need for individual code reviews because everyone reviews the code in realtime as it’s being written. Productivity aside, I think mobbing is a fantastic way to learn not just about the code, but about how other people approach problems. If pair programming doubles the number of perspectives you’re exposed to, mob programming yields even more insights.

That’s not to say that pairing — or indeed mobbing — is plain sailing. Something I struggled with initially was putting my ego to one side to ask questions that I thought might sound stupid. In these situations, it’s good to remember that your partner might be having the same thoughts, especially if you’re both just starting out.
If you find yourself pairing with someone more senior, perhaps at work, don’t be afraid to pick their brains and impress them with your inquisitiveness. Even someone who is only a bit further ahead than you might think of things that wouldn’t occur to someone more senior. Some of my favorite pair programmers only have a few months more experience than me, yet they always seem to know exactly which mistakes I’m about to make and how to steer me in the right direction. When these developers say there’s no such thing as a silly question, they really mean it. The best pair programmers speak freely, without the need to appear fantastic or the fear of looking foolish.
Pair programming takes practice, but it’s worth perfecting. Studies show that programmers who pair to solve problems tend to be more confident, productive, and engaged with their work. Whether you’re looking for your next job or you’re onboarding new hires, pairing is caring.

Engineering Empathy
When I started teaching myself JavaScript, my code looked a lot like my bedroom floor: I’d let it get messier and messier until I had no choice but to tidy it. As long as my web browser could understand it, I didn’t care how it looked.
It wasn’t until I started reviewing other people’s code that I realized I needed to show a lot more empathy for the people reviewing mine.
Empathy might be the most underrated tool in any developer’s arsenal. It’s the reason why IDEO puts user research at the center of their design process, and why Etsy asks their designers and product managers to do an engineering rotation. Empathy emerges when we have the opportunity to see how our work impacts other people. No wonder collaborative coding is such a great way to build it.
Peer code review — the act of checking each other’s code for mistakes — calls on us to exercise empathy. As the reviewer, it’s important to recognize that someone has gone to considerable effort to write the code that you are about to critique. As such, try to avoid using phrases that might imply judgment or trivialize their work. When you refer to their code, you want to show them the specific functions and lines that you have questions about, and suggest how they might refactor it. Sharing learning resources can also be more helpful than spoon-feeding a solution. Some of the most useful feedback I’ve received from code reviews has come in the form of educational articles, videos, and even podcast recommendations.
Writing good documentation for your code also goes a long way. An act as simple as creating a readme with clear installation instructions shows empathy for anyone who needs to work with your code. GitHub founder Tom Preston-Werner advocates a readme-first approach to development.

I’ve also spoken with tech founders who treat documentation as an essential part of successful onboarding. One CTO said that if a junior developer struggles to reach a level of productivity within six months of joining his team, it points towards the codebase not being well documented enough. It only takes a few seconds to add an explanatory comment to a complex function you’ve written, but it could save the next person who joins your team hours of effort.

Agile Achievement
From the millions of man-hours that go into making CGI movies to the intense development crunches leading up to big-budget video game releases, towering technical achievements take a mind-boggling amount of effort. The first time I saw my current employer’s codebase, I was floored by the enormity of it all. How on earth did anybody build this?
The answer is that everybody can build a lot more than anybody, given the right collaborative framework. In companies that encourage collaborative coding, the software doesn’t emerge from the efforts of a lone genius. Instead, there are ways of working together that help great teams to do amazing work. Developers at Founders and Coders practice a popular software development methodology known as ‘Agile’, and in my experience, it puts the ‘functional’ in cross-functional development teams.
Entire books have been written about Agile, but here is a summary of the core concepts:
A product development team breaks down large pieces of work into small units called ‘user stories’, prioritizes them, and delivers them in two-week cycles called ‘sprints’.
For as long as the project continues, the cycles repeat, and new product requirements get fed into a backlog of tasks for future sprints.
The team holds daily standup meetings to discuss their progress and address any blockers.
The process is both incremental and iterative: the software is built and delivered in pieces and refined in successive sprints.

As a chronic tinkerer whose solo hobby projects often succumb to ‘feature creep’, I know how easy it is to waste time building the things that no one ever uses. I love the way that Agile forces you to prioritize user stories so that the entire team can focus on delivering features that your users actually care about. It’s motivating to know that you’re all united around the common goal of building a product or service that will continue to have a life after you finish working on it.
Splitting tasks into small user stories also happens to be a great way to timebox pair programming sessions. No matter how deep in the zone you find yourselves, finishing up work on a key feature is always a nice reminder to step away from your desks and take a break. Agile lends structure to collaborative coding where it could otherwise be lacking.
Meanwhile, daily standups give you the freedom to talk about anything that is holding you back, and sprint retrospectives provide space to share key wins and pinpoint where the team could improve. These ceremonies foster a sense of collaboration and accountability, and help us to learn more together than we could by ourselves.
Putting all of these Agile principles into practice can be challenging, especially when no one in a team is used to this way of working. At Founders and Coders, it takes most students a while to get into the habit of doing daily standups. However, after 18 weeks of project-based practice, you find that your processes and communication skills improve immensely. By the time you take on your first client work, you’ve formed a much clearer mental model of how to approach building a full-stack web app in a team.
The best way to learn Agile is to build interesting projects with other people. Attending hackathons is an excellent way to connect with potential collaborators. Many open-source projects make their kanban project boards public, so you can see which GitHub issues different contributors are working on. Several welcome contributions from beginners, and you can often assign yourself to open issues and begin raising pull requests.
Since most tech companies subscribe to some form of Agile, it’s not uncommon for employers to ask about it in interviews. Any experience you have can set you apart from other applicants who may never have coded collaboratively, let alone with Agile in mind.

Live Share A neat extension for the popular Microsoft Visual Studio Code editor that supports real time editing and debugging of files inside the same workspace. Video Conferencing Solutions Google Hangouts Superb Google Calendar integration makes it a cinch to schedule video calls. Microsoft Teams Video conferencing software that offers really good call quality (1080p video), and supports up to 250 simultaneous participants.
If you take one thing away from reading this article, I want it to be that team players trump individual contributors. In a field where there seems to be a hot new framework to master every other week, our technical skills age in a way that our soft skills don’t. The upshot is that developers who can work well with other people will always find their abilities are in demand. Collaborative coding isn’t just an effective way to learn; it’s a sought after skill set that anyone can develop with enough practice and patience.

Welcome to March 2020! What a hell of a year so far, lol! March 2020 will be a month of lots of reversals and twists of fate. March in my opinion is always a crucial month and mainly that is to do with the Spring/Autumn equinox each year that always happens around March 20th. We are in the process of ending cycles and this can be very trying and quite emotional. This Pisces season has been one of the deepest and most profoundly impactful ones in recent years. Have hope! We are moving into the astrological new year and there are bright rays of sunshine waiting to greet us. A rebirth is on the horizon… it is time to rise up and shine once more!
The first major aspect occurs on March 8th with the Sun and Neptune meeting up in the dreamy and watery sign of Pisces. The Sun in astrology represents our: ego, vitality and life force. Neptune in astrology represents: the subconscious mind,compassion and spiritual healing. Pisces, the 12th zodiac sign is known to be: dreamy, deep, compassionate and unconditionally loving. The Sun and Neptune conjoining in Pisces will create a deep and prophetic healing to occur, particularly within our inner masculine or with a man close to us. There is an illumination with this aspect of deep healing within our egocentric wounds. A major light wants to be shown on our subconscious patterns and a surrender of this ego is in store. Whatever has been holding us back from healing past traumas connected to our inner power and vitality will be shown on or around this day. Cosmic “daddy” healing is a manifestation of this aspect.
On the very next day, March 9th, the planets are quite active. The first aspect is Mercury, the planet of: communication, contracts and travel, moves direct at 28 degrees of Aquarius. Since February 16th, the god of communication has been retrograde, mainly within the sign of Pisces. Now in his direct motion, we are ready to move forward with signing contracts and initiating new plans. While Mercury was in retrograde motion, many deep subconscious wounds came to the surface, perhaps when we were sleeping. Now in his direct motion, Mercury in Aquarius is ready to re-create and move forward with innovative ideas and plans. Our inner genius will be sparked and a renewal of inner faith in our dreams and goals. Any confusion or delays that occurred in the retrograde cycle are now being cleared up and a new path of progress is upon us.
The second aspect on March 9th, is the Full Moon at 19 degrees of Virgo. Full Moons are all about: completions, manifestations and endings. Virgo, the 6th zodiac sign, is about: health, work, service, purity, practicality and order. The Full in Virgo will bring some kind of finalization to a health or work matter. We are ready to be fully grounded in our sense of self and release any negative self talk. There is a willingness with this Full moon to release old habits or ways of thinking that have held us back. Restoring order and structures in our lives could be a huge part of this full moons gift.
Moving to later in the month, on March 20th, the Sun, which again, rules the: ego, vitality and life force, enters its sign of exaltation, as it progresses into Aries. Aries, the 1st zodiac sign, represents: beginnings, fiery passion, will power and rebirth. Happy Spring equinox to my Northern hemisphere folks and happy Autumn equinox to my Southern hemisphere friends! The Sun moving into Aries marks a pivotal time of massive awakenings and new starts. We are ready to begin again and clear away the cob-webs of the former season.
The very next day, on March 21st, Saturn, the planet of: karma, obligation, and structures, leaves his home sign of Capricorn and transits into Aquarius. Since 2017, Saturn has been progressing through his ruling sign of the goat, causing us to shape up and deal with past karma in our lives. Now we get a preview of what is to come as he transits the sign of Aquarius. Saturn will only stay in Aquarius until July 2020, before going retrograde back into Capricorn until the end of 2020. At the end of 2020, he will move back into Aquarius where he will stay until 2023. Saturn in Aquarius will bring about about new structures to something old in our lives. We are ready to take the solid foundations we have built while he was in Capricorn and revolutionize them into progressive ways of being and thinking. Things that were old could become new again and we are ready to re-establish out of the box thinking to old problems from the past.
Finally, (sorry this is a long one) on March 24th, the Moon, which again, rules our: emotions, inner core and intuition, becomes new at 4 degrees of Aries. Aries, the 1st zodiac sign, is known to be: the baby, the pioneer, the risk taker and the passion seeker. The New Moon in Aries is a time when we want a fresh start and will just add fuel to the fire which began with the Spring/Autumn equinox. Wiping the slate clean and starting again, refreshed and renewed is what this new moon is all about. Fiery passions will be ignited and we are ready to take on life again, with a fresh set of eyes and with an open heart.
March 2020 is a month of tremendous shifts and changes. As we step into a new season, we are ready for our new selves to emerge. After a quite heavy and emotional few months, there is a desire to have our passion and perhaps our energies uplifted again. March 2020 is a month where the sacrifices and hard work we have put in will begin to pay off. It is a month of ultimate renewal and an awakening of our desires. This month we are being encouraged to: wipe the slate clean and begin again, surrender to letting things go so new things can emerge, and the return back to our innocence and sense of wonder.

Huawei's Android loss: How it affects you

The restrictions being placed on Huawei's access to the Android operating system will cast a long shadow over Tuesday's launch of the Chinese company's latest handsets.
The firm has invited press from across the globe to London to witness the unveiling of its Honor 20 Series smartphones.
The BBC understands the devices will still offer the full Android experience - including use of Google's own app store.
But unless a clash with the US government is resolved, future launches are set to deliver a much more limited experience - assuming Huawei decides to run them off Android at all.
As yet it is unclear whether the restrictions Google has imposed on Huawei will be long-lasting.
Presumably Google does not want to break ties with what is the world's second bestselling Android phone-maker after Samsung - the Chinese firm recently said more than half a billion consumers use its handsets.
In theory, the US's Bureau of Industry and Security could issue a licence to let Google continue the relationship or at least parts of it, or even make a U-turn and drop its restrictions altogether.
But assuming the matter is not resolved soon, let's try and pick our way through the consequences.
What exactly is Google doing?
The US tech firm is suspending all business activity with Huawei related to "non-public" transfers of hardware, software and technical services.
That does not mean that Huawei loses all access to Android, as the core operating system is an open source project. Any manufacturer can modify it and install it on their devices without having to get permission.
But in practice, all the major vendors rely on a lot of support from Google.
In addition, Google controls access to several add-on bits of software, including:
the Play app store
its own apps
the Google Assistant virtual helper
the Gmail email service
tools that allow third-party services access to certain functions
How does this affect existing Huawei handsets?
Owners of Huawei or Honor phones will not find that they suddenly cannot install new apps or get updates for Google services.
The reason is that their devices have already been certified under processes known as the Compatibility Test Suite (CTS) and the Vendor Test Suite (VTS).
As a consequence, Google can provide them with new versions of its products and authorise downloads from its Play marketplace, without having to directly deal with Huawei itself.

However, matters become more complex when it comes to security updates.
The way these typically work is that Google gives Android device-makers the code for its software fixes about one month before it reveals details to the public about the vulnerabilities involved.
This gives manufacturers time to check the patches do not cause problems for their own proprietary software, and then to package up a customised version of the fixes as a download.
Huawei will now only learn of the patches on the same day they are released to the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), meaning there will be a lag before it can distribute them.
That could theoretically result in a situation in which a serious flaw is revealed and Huawei's devices remain exposed for several days or weeks.
How about new handsets?
New phones will not be certified, and as a consequence will not be able to have Google Mobile Services (GMS) pre-installed.
This includes a suite of Google's own apps including:
the Play stores for apps, music and other media
Google Photos
YouTube
Google Maps
Google Drive cloud storage
Google Duo video calls
Some of these services will still be accessible via the web, but many would find that less convenient.
The loss will not have much impact on China-based users, who are already blocked from accessing most of Google's facilities. But elsewhere, it could be a deal-breaker for many consumers.
They would still be able to install third-party apps via alternative stores or a process known as side-loading.
But Google prevents its own apps being installed on uncertified devices.
Furthermore, losing access to GMS also means that third-party developers would not be able to tap into Google's application programming interfaces (APIs) on new devices.
The consequences would be that their apps could lose some functions.
"Let's say an app wants to send a notification to your device," Mishaal Rahman, editor-in-chief of the news site XDA-developers.com, explained to the BBC.
"There's a really, really good chance that it's using Google Play Services for its push notification service. So any apps - even Twitter - could stop working with push notifications."
Another example, he added, would be the loss of Casting, a facility that allows handsets to wirelessly stream audio and video to a TV or other equipment via a tap of an icon.
What about future releases of Android?
There has already been a lot of speculation that Huawei devices might be stuck with the current version of Android.
But Mr Rahman believes that is unlikely to be the case since the next version - Android Q - will also be open source and Google has already shared most of the source code with Huawei and other partners.
However, he added that things could be more tricky for the subsequent release - Android R - in 2020.
"What happens is that Google's top partners - which includes companies like Huawei and Samsung - get early access to the preview code many months before the public beta release," he explained.
"That gives them a big head-start on adapting their own software releases.
"The impact on Huawei would be that it would lose several months of development time."
Moreover, Mr Rahman added, even if the Chinese company was willing to accept it could only offer the operating system much later than its competitors, it would also face a marketing nightmare.
"Android is actually a brand, and in order to use it your software must [be certified]," he explained.
"So, even if Huawei continues to sell devices using the open source code, it cannot legally call its devices Android."
So what is the alternative?
Huawei told the BBC it would prefer to work with Android, but has created a new operating system as a Plan B
"We have been making plans for this possible outcome - but it hasn't happened yet," Jeremy Thompson, Huawei's UK executive vice president said.
"We have a parallel programme in place to develop an alternative… which we think will delight our customers.
"In the short-term it's not good news for Huawei, but I think we can manage that."
In China, that might not be too disruptive a move, thanks to the fact that device-owners spend much of their time within WeChat - a platform that allows third-party apps to run within it.
Furthermore, other developers are likely to be put under pressure to quickly release versions of their stand-alone apps for the new operating system.
But elsewhere the move could be highly problematic.
"Whatever they have cooked up is dead in the water," claimed Mr Rahman.
"The critical part of success with a mobile OS is the number of apps available on the market.
"And besides Apple's iOS, Android has the biggest developer platform."

According to a study by Nielsen Norman Group, a visitor will leave your real estate website homepage within 10 to 20 seconds unless you give them a reason to stay.

Sounds like a tall order, right? But real estate website homepages are something far worthier of your attention than whether or not to be on Snapchat or any other social media site for that matter. After all, your social media efforts are meant to drive people back to your website.

Who is landing on your homepage and what are they looking for?
Knowing your audience is marketing 101 and figuring out who comprises your site’s audience is a no-brainer: a real estate consumer, either a buyer or a seller.
Naturally, a homebuyer wants to see listings, but that’s not all your visitors are searching for. A NAR study found that these visitors also crave information on the purchase process, from getting a loan to closing on the purchase. And many real estate website homepages don’t provide all of this information.
Homeowners thinking of selling want information about that process and, many visitors will be wanting to learn more about you, your services and what you’re like to work with.
To keep these people on your site long enough to convert them to a lead requires making your real estate website homepage the best it can be. Big believers in learning from others mistakes as well as successes, let’s take a look at some of the more common mistakes we see on agent websites.
Not customizing real estate website homepages
This is a biggie. We see it with our client’s sites all the time. Let’s start at the top of the page and work our way down.
Pull up your homepage and follow along.
Above the fold tweaks
The area that shows up before you begin scrolling down the page is known as “above the fold.” It’s your homepage’s most valuable real estate so not one inch of space should be disregarded.
The most common mistake we see with this part of the page is the absolute lack of the agents’ location. Most of the sites we viewed before writing this included the name of the brokerage, the agent’s name and his or her phone number and email address.
Aside from a handful of agents, all of the sites lacked any mention (above the fold) of where the agent works. None of them mention a city, a community or even the STATE that the agent serves.
What happened to the importance of “location, location, location?”
Where ARE you, Waldo?
It’s impossible to tell from the sites we viewed, until we scrolled to the bottom of the page. How many of your site’s visitors will stay put long enough to do that? And, where is the SEO value in not mentioning the city you serve?
Let visitors know, above the fold, that they’ve landed in the right place. The best way to do this is to localize the text that came with the site.
Something as simple as changing “YOUR DREAM HOME AWAITS” to “YOUR DREAM HOME IN ANWHEREVILLE AWAITS” will let visitors know they’ve found a local real estate site.
The same goes for “Work with me to find an ANYWHEREVILLE HOME YOU LOVE.” Check out this tweak in action on Cape Cod agent Michael Leighton’s homepage and also at lovelandreport.com, home of broker Cleve Loveland.

Scroll down your homepage and you’ll find plenty of other localizing opportunities that few agents are taking advantage of.
For instance, “SEARCH FOR HOMES” can be “SEARCH FOR HOMES IN ANYWHEREVILLE” and transform “Selling your Home” to “Selling your Anywhereville Home.”
The only way to beat the big, national real estate website homepages is by being LOCAL. Take advantage of this opportunity as often as possible.
Real estate website homepages – value proposition
Remember that Nielsen Norman Group study and the admonition to “communicate your value proposition” at the top of the homepage? Let’s figure that one out.
What is a value proposition, anyway? According to Investopedia, a value proposition “refers to a business or marketing statement that a company uses to summarize why a consumer should buy a product or use a service.”
The chances that someone landing on your real estate website homepage doesn’t understand the value of the IDX or the use of a real estate agent to buy or sell a home are slim.
But, there’s a second part to the definition: “This statement convinces a potential consumer that one particular product or service will add more value or better solve a problem than other similar offerings will.”
In other words, your value proposition needs to immediately show your site’s visitors how working with you is better than working with other agents in town.
And, the best way to get that across, in the least number of words possible, is with testimonials. Social proof is worth its weight in gold and does more than just show potential clients the value in working with you. Real estate website homepages shine with testimonials that increase your value proposition.
Testimonials also help establish trust
If you can’t squeeze in a one-line testimonial above the fold, ensure that your testimonials are the first thing visitors see as they begin scrolling.
If you’re the top agent in town, there’s your value proposition. Use it. Again, Michael Leighton gets bonus points. Here’s what his site’s visitors see as soon as they begin scrolling on his real estate website homepage:

Don’t be a stranger to your own site
If it’s been awhile since you checked your website for errors, now would be a good time to do so. Especially check for broken links, which will negatively impact your site’s SEO. Then, look for other odd errors.
We found several while scanning real estate website homepages. For instance, we have a feeling this agent hasn’t visited her site in awhile, because the problem in the nav bar (“PATH-DEFAULT”) is easily remedied in her site’s “Settings” area.
Then, there’s the agent who has a very cool video on his real estate website homepage. When it ends, YouTube offers up a preview of other videos for the visitor to watch.
The only problem is that the menu includes a picture of a naked lady. Not exactly the professional image the agent is trying to present, right?
Finally, if you haven’t yet obtained your SSL certificate for your website, do it now. As of July, of this year, Google Chrome started labeling non-HTTPS sites (those without a certificate) as “Not Secure.” Which site would you trust more? (courtesy of HostGator):
Although agents don’t take payments via their sites, they do ask for information, so the certificate will help protect the exchange of information.
Plus, It doesn’t do you any good to go overboard in your efforts to present yourself as trustworthy when, right there in the address bar, Google is telling them that you’re not.

Google's Android team held a Reddit AMA session to answer user queries about the platform and as it usually happens, we got to learn a lot of things about the upcoming Androidversion 8.0 aka Android O. Here is the list of things that were revealed during the Q&A session on Reddit.
1. Android O name: The argument continues
While hoping that the official name for upcoming version of Android can be revealed in a Q&A session on Reddit is little far-fetched, some people were still optimistic. However, the Android engineers might have created further doubt about the name by indicating that every person in the team has their own suggestion for Android O's name. The names mentioned during the session included Okra Pudding, Oak Tree Cookie, Ovaltine, and Oobleck.
2. Theming is not easy even on Android
While Android already offers more customisation options than most operating systems, the Android team revealed that there are still certain issues that prevent them from providing users further theming options in the platform. In a response to question regarding theming, Android team's Alan Viverette said:
TL;DR Theming is not hard. Reliable and consistent theming is hard. There are technical and logistical issues with theming. The technical side is largely solved in O with RRO support (thanks Sony!); however, we still don't have stable APIs for describing what can be themed or adequate ways to verify that existing applications properly support theming.
You might remember a dark theme making brief appearances in previous releases -- since we already had a dark Material theme, we didn't have to worry about APIs to describe the themeable properties; however, we were unable to convert every existing app (ex. Calendar, Photos, other bundled and core apps -- even Settings was a challenge) to support dark Material theme and verify that it was properly supported.
3. Current Pixel color management
In what came as an interesting revelation, Google's Android team clarified that the colour management feature from Android O will not be supported by the first-generation Google Pixel and Google Pixel XL. To recall Google Pixel XL 2was recently tipped to come with Always On Ambient Display. Romain Guy from the Android team said, "Colour management will not be available on Pixel 2016. It's a device-specific feature that requires calibration of the display on the factory floor, it's thus optional and cannot really be retro-fitted on older devices (it would also have a potentially negative impact for users as the displayed colours would appear to have changed)."
4. Bluetooth audio fixes
As you might be aware, Pixel and Pixel XLsmartphones were reported to be facing issuesrelated to Bluetooth audio wherein the devices were facing connectivity issues. In the AMA session, the Android team assured that it has been aware of the problem and that the Bluetooth audio reliability in Android O is drastically better than in Nougat. Tim Murray from the Android team said, "The Android Bluetooth, audio, and performance teams actually did a lot of work to improve BT audio in O. We flipped the switch internally since the most recent developer preview because we needed a little more time to make sure that things were stable, so you haven't seen the fruits of that labor quite yet."
5. Android O and tablets
On being asked a question about the interface on Android tablets, Mike Cleron said that he doesn't think that tablets is a space where once can meaningfully talk about "completion" and that its more about figuring out the next area of innovation. He further said, "We are continuing to invest in productivity use cases (keyboard-driven UI, multi-window, etc) but also -- along with lots of other folks in the industry -- working on what the next evolution of tablets should be. For Android, there are some interesting overlaps with tablets given the increasing success of Chromebooks and the recent addition of the ability to run Android apps on Chrome OS. We are working to make the Android developer stories for both form factors (tablets, Chromebooks) identical."
6. Project Treble or Trouble?
One would expect Android team to face difficulties with the development of Android O but one of the team members described Project Treble to be the "biggest challenge" of the process. Project Treble essentially aimed to drive faster OS updates for Android. The team member said:
The problem we had to solve was that vendor and OS code was deeply intertwined. The device maker had to depend on the silicon vendor and had to wait until the silicon vendor released code, and then had to integrate that code. Treble makes it easier, faster and less costly for manufacturers to update devices to a new version of Android by creating a clean vendor interface.
However, creating that interface was very deep surgery on Android. Invasive, complex engineering that took an enormous amount of effort to get right - media, graphics, location, so much. I think Dave summed it up pretty well: "I'm glad we did it, but it was a lot of work."
7. Android O Android Wear
If you were wondering whether Android O will come with a sea of changes for the wearable platform or not, latter is your answer. Android team member Hoi Lam clarified that Android O will mostly be a "technical upgrade" for Android Wear. He gave an example by saying, "Wear will get background limits which will help preserve battery with O and users can expect more controls over notifications via notification channels. In addition, we have added new tools for developers to help implement complications and build watch friendly UIs."
Android O: Current status
Android O is currently in developer preview and is expected to roll out widely in its finished form later this year. While the developers shared that they would have loved to improve the battery life further with the upcoming version, time constraint resulted prevented them from working towards it. There was also a mention of dedicated virtual reality mode and also "World Peace" but there is only so much that can be incorporated in an iteration of the platform.
