Welcome to Featured Fic Friday! A day where I, or someone who suggests one, tell you about a fanfic that I really enjoy! Spoiler's under the cut! Today's featured fic is...

A Frayed Knot by Devcipher (Teen And Up, Complete)

Blue has recently begun traveling with his friends in their newly formed group; The Star Sanses. Blue had heard stories from Ink and Dream (mainly Ink) about the cruel, multiversal destructor that was Error. Blue has always taken the threat of such a monster very seriously. However, when he first comes face-to-face with the destroyer, he notices something the others have perhaps overlooked. His behaviour was over the top and certainly dangerous, but... it seemed a little lackluster for a supposed heartless villain.

A short fic that features Blue as the main character! I chose this fic in particular because I haven't recommended very many fics more focused on any of the Star Sanses recently.

I enjoy the way that the author portrays the characters, & I think the concept is interesting. I don't recall reading a story that tackles the scenario the way this one does.

Spoilers ahead!

I love the relationship between Error & Blue, though I'm also just a sucker for overpowered characters who only listen to one person. We can clearly see through Error's actions how much he cares for Blue, & how Blue comes to care about Error.

The interaction between the Stars near the end is also very funny to me, the author calling Ink a drama queen is hilarious after an emotion packed scene beforehand.

The scene at the very end is amusing as well, & the two not knowing how to react to Swap being taken is understandable.

you may be wondering if I draw blue with the bandana and star eyes how is he much different then blueberry? or maybe you weren't, but ill rant about it anyway since I have a few visual differences. all my own interpretations of course.

Blue!!

If you cant read my handwriting heres a gist of what it says (and anything else I forgot to mention)

sharp (also stars) on blues armor. he also has a full "battle body"

an adult who isn't really childish per se, just optimistic and full of whimsy.

more sans like appearance, wider fac, sharper nose hole, mouth is more sansy.

his eyes, while being stars, resemble canonswap a little more with the circles in the middle :)

(not pictured) he has gold accents throughout his armor, the others do not.

tall for a sanses (about upper 5 ft or 6ft ish haven't decided yet)

Blueberry!!

an adult who uses a childish front to hide his more mishcevious side. secretly a devious manipulator. Has definitely killed someone and would kill again.

due to his demeanor he is mistaken for being younger than he is, he loves seeing people's surprised reactions when they learn he is in his late 20's.

blues a little freaked out by him, but generally they're good friends. blue doesn't hate him, as he realizes his creation isn't his fault. That and its really hard to make him hate someone with intense burning rage.

short for a sans, about 3 ft and 5 inches ish? one of the only sanses shorter than ink that is not a babybones..(sorry little guy)

cuter in appearance, softer star eyelights and less wide face. Bigger eyes and armor isn't sharp.

only has shoulder pads for armor, no body armor whatsoever.

blue (the color) is different.

also at some point i found myself divided between the kid and adult versions of blueberry, so I just consider them different characters, anyways "lil blue" folks.

Lil blue(berry)!

kid that popped into existence because of the fanon of blueberry being a kid. at least that's my lore for him, lol.

has a solid relationship with blue. blue brings him on trips often. lil blue looks up to him I think.

don't leave blueberry and lil blue in a room alone too long. the world would end.

my interpretations of different AU skeletons(for the Neighborhood AU)🌺✨

Sans

Your typical lazy guy and cool uncle that lets you get away with stuff and can randomly infodump about the wonders of space when possible. The most chill and comforting guy you could know. Pretty close to canon but just Slightly fanon. No, he doesn't know about Resets. He DOES know the Timeline theory exists as there are other versions of him literally walking around, but he has no clue about time suddenly stopping and restarting. That's something only Frisk and Flowey know of.

Papyrus

The coolest dude ever!!! A well mannered man skilled in combat training and happens to like a lot of action movies, especially ones like Batman or Deadpool for the more brutal themes and humor. (He watches them with various others.) He genuinely wants to see the good in people, and believes in being kind until proven he should think otherwise. He doesn't hate puns, he just hates when they're basic! When there's more thought put in, that's when he enjoys them, even cracking a few of his own. His favorite color is green.

Red

Another case of "cool uncle that lets you get away with shit", though in this case it'd be more like

"yo red I got in a fight"

"..did you win?"

"yeah-"

"good. 's all i care about."

He works on a lot of old junk to try and fix it up, it's a fun hobby for him. He's also in a band! Pretty skilled with the electric guitar. He's a bit more reserved when you first meet him but when he gets comfortable he'll warm right up to you. He even gets a bit more confident. Though he does have his moments where confidence seeps through anyway, like when he's performing.

Edge

Edge is the embodiment of Sass. If he has something to say he WILL say it. He's a bit cold to anyone upon first meeting them, kinda like a cat. But once he grows to appreciate one's presence he's a lot softer towards them, more welcoming. Especially when they understand him. He's also very stylish! Has a lot of cool name brands in his closet (that he'll share with you if you're nice enough/can fit the stuff). Also absolutely adores cats, Doomfanger is his number one though. Always and forever. He can also play the piano!

Blue

The most energetic guy in the group, and also the one that works out the most. You need him, he's there right away. He's very optimistic about things, and like classic Papyrus, wants to see the good in everyone around him. A walking green flag, one of the most trustworthy characters here alongside Papyrus. He's also kinda like a single father when he has to take care of Blueberry so that's a thing- it's kinda a mix of a sibling dynamic and a parent-child dynamic between the two. Is a coffee addict, just like Black. Take it away from him.

Stretch

One of the more chill and mellow characters, usually found high. But he's fun to be around when he isn't high as well, and can usually get along with people. He and Rus often get into chaotic shenanigans together, staying up late to do dumb stuff. You could probably see them building a tower of cards on top of Red's head while he's sleeping or something. His hoodies usually smell like honey, he has a bunch of them that look exactly the same like he's straight out of Charlie Brown. That isn't to say he doesn't have other outfits, though. He likes to write his own stories.

Black

Officer, it's this one, this one's the overworker!!! He's the wine aunt of the group. Has an addiction to coffee he shares with Blue, and also likes to indulge in different kinds of wine from time to time. He and Edge have similar fashion tastes, only he likes to go for shades of purple where Edge prefers Red. He often has to be forced to rest due to wanting to work on projects overnight. LOOOOVES to gossip about workplace drama and other things, and will be very happy to tell you about anything.

Rus

Get this man some sleep he is TIRED!! But yet he refuses to get rest until someone makes him. Rus is an artist, often doing commissions and working on silly projects with Stretch. He's probably one of the quicker ones to befriend you, and once he does his usual quiet demeanor fades away. Likes to lean on people he likes a lot as long as they don't mind it. He has some tattoos drawn onto his arms. They're just made with marker though, so he can change them anytime he feels like it.

Mars/"Horror"

Mars is one of the more reserved members of the group, he often instigates fights with Red because he thinks his reactions are funny. Will tell people like it is, and doesn't hold back either. If he doesn't like someone, he'd exchange very few words with them. But if he does like someone, he'll be more open to talk with them and slowly grow more and more comfortable. Yes he has the pet bird here too, it's in every timeline. He's still taking the time to adapt to a peaceful timeline where nothing's wrong. Has memory problems, and keeps a notepad in his pocket to remember everything crucial. Sometimes he has to be reminded to eat, because he forgets. Will appreciate anyone being patient with him. He can be a liiiittle bit of an asshole sometimes but we still love him.

Jupiter

Another guy that absolutely loves gossip, often talking about it with Black. He can be a little loud sometimes without meaning to be, due to his hearing struggles. Got his teeth and eyes fixed a few months after living in the universe, has a little gap between his front teeth. He loooves making sweaters for everybody, and acts a lot like a Mom friend. After taking classes he became one of the better cooks of the group!

Berry

I have a more detailed post about this guy already so if you want elaboration go there, but i can describe him in two words:

We'll do one of my favourite Au's, UnderSwap!!!!! (Also if you have suggestions for any nicknames for characters, excluding sans and papyrus, then send them in! I'm kinda stuck on most of them.)

Blue (US sans) is the older brother! The Sans are always the older brother, no matter the au or the dynamic between the skeleton brothers. It's one of the few constants of the multiverse!

Blue isn't like Blueberry. He's still an adult, but he holds a lot of energy and positivty towards people. He believes that everyone can be good no matter what!

He trains regularly with Alphys. Originally it was actually sparring, but Alphys eventually transfered it over to cooking lessons.

He doesn't have a lot of friends, a lot of the Monsters in Snowdin find him childish, or they don't like his energy. So despite his dreams of popularity and love, he really only has Alphys and his brother

He's desprete to join the royal guard, like, he camped outside Alphys door for a week, begging for a chance.

Stretch (US papyrus) is the younger brother, he's a quiet nerd. When he was a babybones, Blue had to practically drag him away from his books.

He used to work in the labs in Hotlands with Undyne, eventually switching to patroling with his brother, for unknown reasons.

He hangs around muffets alot, at this point he's probably made her the richest monster in the Underground, with how much money he spends there.

He has a lot of acquaintances but not many friends. He finds it easy to talk to people (Hint: just make them laugh with puns) but Stretch is very closed off. It takes a lot to break down his walls and get closer to him.

US Asgore is a terrible cook, he trys, really. But it's not the same as Toriels.

he does make a mean cup of tea tho

he's over three thousand years old! He was born just around the same time that humans started building up civilsations.

US Asgore wasn't royalty until he married Toriel.

Once on the surface, they do rekindle their love for each other.

Also he and Stretch get along. Stretch used to waste time outside the Ruins door practising puns. One day Asgore joined in and it became a daily thing.

Asgores lonely. He doesn't say it but he is. The Ruins monsters are intimdated by him and he can't leave the Ruins, in fear of having to face his ex-wife again

US Toriel is a woman of many regrets. She hates the position she's put herself and the rest of Monsterkind in. She hates the way she treated Asgore, the way she treated her family.

she gace each human child that fell Underground a slice of her cinnamon pie before she fought them. She wanted to make sure that they died full.

She's very stoic, US Toriel is a woman of little emotions and little words.

Most of her people haven't seen her in a long time. She mostly stays inside the throne room and her own room.

US Toriel has very heavy eye-bags, all those restless nights do a number on you.

Although she is a very good cook. Creating and trying new recipes is a guilty pleasure hobby she often indulges in.

She gives a lot of the excess to US Alphys! Who's very grateful for the good food

US Chara is around 12 when they fall and they're non-binary.

US Chara to me feels more like they would have a bravery soul than a determined one. You have to be pretty brave to run away from your home and scale all the way up a mountain all by yourself.

Also, yeah, their homelife wasn't the greatest. They were pretty neglected by their parents. And when their parents did pay attention to them, it was usually to beat them.

It made them into a very violent person, and when they first fell down into the Underground, they solved a lot of their encounters by just beating the shit out of the Monsters.

they never killed any of them though, their moral compass was too strong for them to do that.

When they leave Asgore, they sorta learn to chill out. They start seeing the value in pasificism and resist the urge to punch anyone again.

Once they break the barrier, they go to live with Asgore. The human government determines that Chara's parents were unsuitable to live with pretty quickly. When Asgore and Toriel get back together they all live together as one happy family.

Also Stretch and Chara totally worked together to help the two fall back in love. Real RomCom stuff lol.

US Undyne is a huge nerd lol. She works in the lab in Hotland and complains everyday without fail about the heat.

She focuses more on inventing new types of weapons for Monsters to use against humans then anything else.

Which leaves Hotlands remarkable less dangerous.

She watches anime, but keeps it a secret. She doesn't know of anyone watches the human media as well.

She's still really loud and exuberant. Though she's not as muscly or strong as her UT counterpart. She's still just as likely to pull you into a headlock and give you a noogie, while laughing and calling you a "TOTAL WEENIE!!"

it is okay to warp a character however you please to have fun. it is okay to “mischaracterize them” if it means you’re making content or consuming content that you enjoy. it is okay. the fun police do not matter in the end. just because you mold a character to your heart’s content doesn’t mean that you don’t understand their canon or believe your interpretation is the only way ever and that you don’t know what canon or the deeper meaning of the story is. it just means you’re having fun. being jolly. whimsical, even.

it is okay to do whatever. i do not care in the end if you beat the tsundere geno trope to hell and back like the dead horse it is. i do not care if you put dadmare in every single thing you do, and only talk about nightmare/the gang in that context. i do not care if you make someone the exact opposite of who they’re meant to be. i do not care if you take a canon dynamic and flip it on its head for your enjoyment. i do not care if you adore blueberry over swap ten times out of ten. and the fact that people say “if you do this you’re the devil” just means that they hate fun actually. nothing more nothing less. because who actually cares. who is being affected.

you understand the character’s canon, you just. like fanon better. and that is okay. it doesn’t mean you’re stupid or bad at literacy or spreading misinformation (???). it isn’t your fault that some 7 year old looks at your art and takes it as canon because that can be the same for any headcanon. you’re chill. you are fine.

fanon is not worse than canon. unless it actively spreads harmful contexts (ie gross undertones, racist/transphobic/whatever undertones, etc) then it’s fine. it is a-ok. the only time i have an issue with fanon is when people take it as canon, insist it’s canon, and act like a dick about it. but as long as you acknowledge it’s not then?? i don’t see the problem. i am allowed to use blueberry to my heart’s content because anyone who had a problem with him fucked off the internet almost a decade ago, and by now everyone knows he’s not canon adjacent at all. so what is the issue with me using him??? i am allowed to project onto him, and give him a familial dynamic with his canon self (swap)!!!!!

fandom spaces truly went downhill when people became stressed over how they portray characters because they’re afraid of being too self indulgent or too far from canon. be as far from canon as you like. you know what canon is, people know you know what canon is, and so there should be no issue with you making things not canon. it’s fine

ALSO THIS DOESNT EVEN BEGIN TO TOUCH ON HOW YOUNGER PEOPLE IN FANDOM ARE PUT UNDER SO MUCH PRESSURE. Mary sues and fangirling are a core part of the fandom experience. don’t put pressure on teenagers or kids to “join the right side of the fandom” and “acknowledge canon because it’s wholly better”. let kids make terrible misinterpretations and have fun with it.

let children look at a character and say “such a smol bean owo!!! my littol cinnamon roll uvu”. let them. you got that right, why shouldn’t they? why are we putting pressure on kids to be accurate to the canon of a show or game who’s creators don’t give a shit what you do with the characters? what is the point?? it doesn’t do anything good. it doesn’t make things better. it just makes people have less fun

id talk about how the “fanon is bad and cringe and canon is the only way” mindset has destroyed so much of what matters the most in fandoms but then id get burnt at the stake (someone please insist i talk about this so i can be dramatic but relent)

Hey MH, I’ve spent the last few hours going through your MH-SWAP stuff and I adore all of it. (It’s also my favorite Undertale-au) I love how you’ve strayed away from the Fanon interpretations and sticking true to the original concept for the character, while simultaneously implementing your own creative input. One of my other favorite Underswap variants is the ask!error series where US-sans is taken from his brother by error-sans and is slowly turned into an error from the anti void and long term isolation. (Sry idk if you’d heard/seen it or not)

So my question I guess is what would your MH-Swap characters react/look like if they were put in the same situation

I.E: Noodles loses his au and watches his brother be taken, and Neptune being taken from his friends, family, and slowly becoming an error.

I’ve never talked about my opinion of AskErrorSans but tl;dr I have an eternal soft spot for Error Sans, although his fanon content doesn’t interest me in the slightest :>;; it’s been a long time since I read through the comic, and making a proper take on Swap MH in AskError’s story isn’t something I’d actually do (I already have too much to draw anyway ahah), but just for fun here’s some undeveloped thoughts on how that might work:

Neptune's interactions with Error would be pretty different from how AskError!Blueberry felt about Error - in Swap MH’s geno run Neptune isn’t the skelebro who has an unwavering belief in a murderous human’s ability to be good, so he certainly wouldn’t have that attitude towards Error. AskError!Blueberry had had his moments of trying to manipulate Error and Neptune would definitely do that too, but he wouldn’t be as enthusiastic about watching Error’s stories or answering questions and such.

Noodle’s fight with Error wouldn’t go the same as AskError!SwapPaps’ either - he’d be a lot more openly horrified and on the defensive rather than attacking (but not holding back either), and he’d be the one trying to appeal to any goodness left in this version of his brother.

tbh most of the AskError!Swap bros’ dialogue would be swapped if it were the Swap MH bros, with some minor differences here and there!

oh and during that fight, Neptune having his soul tied up in strings would be even more alarming to both bros given his low HP. glitchy manchild needs to be careful with that it’s very fragile

I would probably try and find a way to have more of the Swap MH cast to be involved (maybe rescued somehow), because I can forgive AskError for being largely Sans-centric since it was the early fandom days, but by now I am so tired of AUs that only allow the skelebros to be relevant while everyone else is lucky if they get a mention :’’’’>

I don’t plan on making an Error-ified Neptune design but the idea itself is cool as heck :0 Neptune’s inverted colour scheme is all yellows, oranges and brown (though I’d probably keep some blue on him), so maybe I’d call him Jupiter? Jupiterror???

also I know it was stated that Blueberror couldn’t go back to his own AU as an error but that is Too Damn Sad for my tastes, so in the end I’d just be like “no screw it he’s allowed back, having a glitchy skeletal abomination enjoying domestic post-pacifist life is fine. it’s fine”

aaand that’s all I got just from skimming through the comic for the first time in a couple years and thinking about it for an hour ahah

Dance!Sans

time to find more about my favorite Sans AU, Dancetale <3 I been seeing less posts on Instant Graham, only 1.3k posts on the hashtag #dancetalesans. the AU came around 2016 by a filipino, teaandstars :) I have to find that reblogged post then go to the asks in the archive related to Dance

Dance!Sans keeps getting misinterpreted and I feel bad for him...

- gets mistaken to be seen as an arrogant Dust who dabs and moonwalks confidently

- wild party animal who crashes the party with his breakdancing

- rarely blushes

- not afraid to shout 

He is a lazy, flustered, shy hip hop sans with implied ADHD (”I dance with my hood on cause It helps me concentrate” “Dancetale is where Monsters have this DNA put into their soul that makes them resonate to dancing”) and I'm gonna find more facts about him. He was the first Sans AU wearing a different legwear than shorts. Instead, he wore sweatpants cause the creator thought it’d look good on him. Classic was theorized to have ADHD (I can give a link to the theory post) so Dance may have it too but the hypeactive-impulsvie type. And that’s nothing like the fan arts and fanfics I seen. 

I wanna fix this guy, make canon and fanon takes on him, and you don’t have to see him the same way since it has to do with an actual mental label. I’m not saying the ADHD is canon because Classic may have it, he’s just showing signs of it and it helped me build his fanon interpret, Milkshake (my fanon nickname for Dance like Swap’s fanon nickname is Blueberry). The DNA Soul fact is what makes me think it could be canon, but I'm not saying it’s canon.

im putting hip hop music as my research background music so I know what songs dance would like and I would animate him dancing to it (without ppl saying “yOu rUiNeD mY fAvOrItE sOnG” cause that's just sad)

I already put him in a hoodie trio with Epic and Dust, he is the only soft blue and Dust is the only non-filipino uwu

Yo I LOVE your variation of the Swap bros!!!! Personally I've never really minded Swap Paps, but your variation makes him more than a reskin of fanon Sans. And speaking of fanon, god do I hate the hyperactive (essentially 5y/o) Swap Sans. Your version of him is such a breath of fresh air!! Noodle and Neptune (great name btw) are both still def a Pap and a Sans while undeniably being Swaps which is absolutely amazing!!!

any time someone says something nice about my Underswap stuff I just fall to the ground in a puddle of tears ;;

honestly as much as I love developing my version of Underswap I worry that my ideas won’t appeal to anyone but myself (especially when I do more of my own thing with characters like Swap Papyrus or Napstabot), so I can’t overstate how happy it makes me that Noodle seems to be liked and you can see that in him!!

1000% AGREE ABOUT FANON SWAP SANS TOO… I think Blueberry is still a cute name but the specific characterisation it refers to is such a disappointment to me :

“this is a mature adult person” -fanon, apparently

if people like Blueberry purely because he’s cute then it’s ultimately harmless (unless it’s that inc/est garbage that consumed so much of the whole AU) but it’s a very… basic-level cuteness? there’s no depth of personality, no charming characterisation or anything beyond the surface, and not a shred of UT Sans in there. or UT Papyrus for that matter

it’s disappointing because Underswap has so much more potential than that :’’’> I’ll take a competent Swap Sans who can stand his ground with cool moves and a cute grin over that any day, and that’s what I hope Neptune comes across as ☆
