Writing for the New York Times, Anna Betts, Andrew Little, Elizabeth Sander, Alexandra Tremayne-Pengelly and Walt Bogdanich reveal the extraordinary corruption and depravity of college administrators who colluded with sports book companies to bring gambling to campus.

Implicated in the scandal are such top schools as Michigan State, U Colorado Bolder, Louisiana State, Syracuse and Texas Christian Univeristy (mission: “to educate individuals to think and act as ethical leaders and responsible citizens”).

On the casino side, the major player is Caesar’s, which is only fitting — Caesar’s was driven to bankruptcy by private equity who managed to financialize a casino into ruin:

Caesar’s offered universities millions of dollars for the right to directly sports betting to students. The MSU deal, brokered by university officials Paul Schager and Alan Haller, was worth $8.4m. That is to say, Caesar’s was asking the university to help it drain at least $8.4m from students’ bank accounts in order to turn a profit.

Louisiana State U did a similar deal with Caesar’s, and then embarked on a direct marketing campaign to sell sports gambling to students who were too young to legally place a bet.

LSU says this was a mistake. Cody Worsham, a university official who holds two offices — associate athletic director and chief brand officer (!!) — said that Caesar’s and LSU “share a commitment to responsible, age-appropriate marketing.”

Meanwhile, U Colorado Boulder struck a deal where it earned a $30 bounty every time a student went from non-gambler to gambler — in other words, Boulder didn’t make money by advertising gambling to students — it made money only if its students started gambling.

These student gambling programs are designed to keep children betting even if they lose money, with teaser offers that refund some losses if students keep placing bets.

This is obviously unsavory stuff. That’s why the architects of these programs went to enormous lengths to keep it secret. The state schools involved funneled their deals through private marketing agencies that were shielded from FOIA requests, specifically to prevent the public from learning how public universities were conducting their affairs.

As MSU executive associate athletic director Paul Schager put it: “With the multimedia rights holder, public institutions like Michigan State no longer have to disclose all those sponsorship deals. This helps with the sponsors being able to spend what they feel is appropriate without having the public or employees or stockholders question that investment.”

The deals themselves are far-reaching. As part of MSU’s Caesar’s deal, tailgate parties before big games would be “Caesarized,” with the casino providing ad-copy for the live announcers to read to attendees. As a figleaf, $25,000 of the millions that MSU received from Caesar’s was earmarked for gambling addiction education.

The deals weren’t just kept secret from the public — they were also hidden from top university oversight. At UC Bolder, the Board of Regents was informed of the deal mere hours before it was announced to the public.

These deals have only been running for a couple months and it’s too soon to chart the long-term harms they’ll create in the student body. But, the Times* notes, there is an one harm that surfaced almost immediately: student athletes are now subject to vicious abuse by their fellow students, who lose money they can’t afford when their peers lose a game.

Last Twilight Ep 6 & Friendships

Waiting a week for a new episode was never as hard as this week but with Episode 6 finally airing and me having some time to process the episode.

Before I need to say that despite liking a little bit of jealously in stories, 95% of the time the second lead annoyed the heck out of me because the tend to either be an asshole or too insistent even knowing that the lead they are a chasing is not into him. Speaking of that AugustDay make feel some many thing and then broke me

Not only AugustDay but also just August and Day as characters and how P'Aof always make his character so human, especially in their worst moments, because one thing that human tend to be is self centered, obviously since we can rarely see the big picture, in particular in the moment.

With that, let me start with August, who yeah chose the worst possible thing to do by not telling Day his feeling and initiating a kiss when he was pretty sure that he could only view Day as a friend

The thing is that August had just put a year or more without seeing or even talking to Day so, I think, that he was afraid to have a genuine talk with Day and that would lead to him disappearing again from his life because, in my mind, August does care so much about Day and I said that considering THIS SHOT:

For me, this is not just pity but a care, a very immature kind of care that would take what they think is the Easy way. However in this moment is where August realize that he actions hurt Day even more and in a effort of not having Day withdraw from him, August may have lost his friendship forever

Now I also need to talk about Day because his situation is similar to something I went through a lot as teen because when I was young as tend to be the friend that was the one helping others but never being a priority when I needed most (Also this episode made me realize that I had a crush on a friend who the friendship was always about them)

And we see through the episode Day being happy about how much August is being caring towards him, not just in reason of being his crush but also just a friend putting him first (this maybe be a little projection because the other time I did not have any romantic feelings towards my friend)

Only to find down that all August did was out of pity and felling sad for him and hit him like a ton of bricks

We see that he doesn't even cry at first because the realization that the only way that August would be there and do things for him would be out of pity, not out of simply care (THIS WAS TOO REAL, P'AOF) even if was platonic since it feel like Day as ready to start to move on from his crush at the end of episode 5 so maybe they could have rebuild a good friendship where both of them view each other as equal

But again this a very human situation that hit way too close to home and made cry a lot and think about stuff that I haven't though in a while

Honestly I have been both very tired and lacking inspiration.  Which has led me to writing random scenes of other projects and starting other projects, because it’s a lot easier to write 1k of random scenes instead of sitting down and plotting out a proper trajectory for my actual project.  It’s hard!  I ran into a confusing scene in canon in which the mc got rid of some zombies, but I can’t tell if this was because he was being surrounded by zombies or if it was because he calmly walked toward some nearby zombies like a dumbass or how he even got rid of them to begin with.  I mean look at this.

Right now, I needed to remain calm. There were still a few usable methods, but the important thing was to handle matters in front of me. 

I controlled my breathing and walked to the demonic people.

 Fortunately, it wasn’t difficult to make the fall down the bridge using inertia. Kyaaaack – kwajijik!

Tiger being emotionally exhausted, laying on her couch with little to no energy, eyes fading in and out of the tv. Bill walks out from his office and notices it, standing over the couch and stroking her cheek. He’s quiet, but she curls into his hand.

This is a mood, babes. Compassion exhaustion, I have it in fucking droves these days. And it’s hard to find the motivation to do basic survival things, let alone anything else.

Maybe--if I can self-project a bit here--maybe tiger is a bit of an empath. Maybe  she’s even real sensitive to the moon cycles and just gets really down sometimes, lethargic, exhausted, for seemingly no reason. Maybe, like all of us, she just goes through episodes where she can’t deal anymore and this is one of those. Sometimes they have warning signals--she’ll get a bit withdrawn in the days before she crashes, she won’t say much, she won’t shirk his affections but she definitely won’t be overly enthusiastic about them.

And you know, if I can take a second here--that’s the thing with empaths, you know? They give. They give and give, and when they can’t--they give some more. Sometimes they have a hard time shutting it all off, because it’s involuntary to begin with--they’re not trying to read people. They’re not asking to feel the influx of emotions that they feel. But he goes to get her every day, makes sure she eats, make sure she gets all the affection that she wants or needs (which is sometimes none), makes sure he helps quiet her mind just a little. And it’s kind of beautiful, isn’t it? The way he approaches her. Empaths are special people, and even if she’s not an empath--she’s special to him and he just wants her to be okay.

So maybe on a particularly bad day--he knew it was one, because she’s barely said a word all day--maybe she’s laid out on the couch, staring blankly at the wall. And when his timer goes off--his tiger timer, to go and check on her--he takes a few steadying breaths first, gets his mind right, puts nothing but her care and comfort and safety at the forefront of it. Then he goes out to find her sprawled on the couch.

“Hey kid,” he says softly. He just reaches a hand out, threads it lightly through her hair and despite her lethargy--she curls into it. Because he’s good energy. He’s safety. He’s comfort. He’s...calm.

“It’s my cuddle break,” he continues, “Can I hold you?”

And she doesn’t say anything, she doesn’t nod--but she does reach out, grab onto his shirt, pull him to her. He goes willingly, sprawling on the couch beside her, and as soon as he’s laying down she buries her nose in his chest, wraps her arms tight around him. It’s a good sign. He holds her tight in return, running his hand soothingly up and down her back.

And he doesn’t move. His breaks are only supposed to be about 20 minutes, but tiger is clinging to him, still buried in his chest, and there’s no way he’s leaving her like this. He feels it eventually--he might not be an empath but he knows his girl--and he feels the stress slowly start to crumble. To ebb away. To release. And he just keeps his breathing steady, keeps holding on to her tightly keeps stroking her back rhythmically.

“That mind, kid,” he murmurs eventually, “It’s so beautiful, but it’s so loud isn't it?”

She doesn’t say anything, she just nods into his chest.

“That’s okay,” he hugs her a bit closer, “I can be louder.”

Hey, long post alert

I'm coming here to vent a little because I know no one actually reads these, so I don’t have to worry about the people mentioned here finding this.

Today I almost cried over the stupidest thing and I’m so mad at myself. It has been almost 5 hours and I still can’t think of anything else.

Basically, today for my first 3 classes, we were working on a project, so when I came back to my original seat there was a lot of stuff from other kids. One of the lost things was a graded English test, and it was all torn and wrinkly. I recognized the name of the guy who lost it but I couldn’t find him anywhere! So I went to politely ask one of my friends (who was one of this guy’s BFFs) if he could give him the test once he saw him.

Now look, I already hated that guy. He manipulated my ex boyfriend to break up with me. He made my friend go from a happy outgoing person to someone who constantly self harms. I don’t know why I even consider him a friend, because I should honestly just block him from my life, curse him and then cast 50000 protection spells.

But what he did made me 100% hate him (and I don’t like hating people, I believe a lot in forgiveness and second chances). As I placed the boy’s test on his table, and asked him as politely as possible (“Hey, could you give this to *name* please? I’m pretty sure he lost it but I don’t know where he is”) he said: “No, give it to him yourself!” And swept the boys test off his table.

At first, I thought he was joking, and was going to laugh, grab the test he just swept to the floor and be like “Just kidding, of course I can give him the test!”. But he didn’t say anything else. He just ignored me, left me to bend down and pick up the test that HE DROPPED ON THE FLOOR. 

Then, legit 2 seconds later he turned to this other guy and said “Hey, could you give *name* his folder?”

I just wanted to cry and I don’t know why. Sure, it was rude, but most people would just get mad but it’s like a part of me actually broke right then and there.  And it’s still broken. I’m still very sad and I don’t know why I’m so touched because some guy refused to help someone. 

If I hadn’t run into the guy who lost his test, he could have never gotten it back, so thank you destiny for helping me at least a bit.
