Hot take on modern retellings of the Trojan War: if they want to present Helen well, they should include what happened to her after Paris' death, as per the lost poems.

With Paris dead there was no reason to keep Helen, right? Nope, because the legitimate ruler of Sparta is HER, Menelaus is just the guy she chose as her consort to act as king, give her a few heirs and spares, and make sure they don't get themselves killed like idiots like her brothers Castor and Pollux had done, so, in theory, if they married her off to one of Priam's remaining sons they could claim one of the wealthiest kingdoms in Bronze Age Greece. Thus Deiphobus and the augur Helenus get in, Deiphobus wins, and Helenus goes out to Mount Ida to calm down. Thus Helen is pissed... And Helenus, who knows the prophecies about the impending fall of Troy, got himself captured by Odysseus.

A few days later, the Greeks are acting weird. Ships are going back home and returning, and the siege has slacked off, enough merchants and beggars can come in... And, while observing the beggars, Helen recognizes ODYSSEUS. She wastes no time to talk to him, finds out he's looking for the Palladium, the statue of Athena that makes the city invulnerable, to steal it later, and PROMPTLY TELLS HIM WHERE TO FIND IT, and leaves a secondary gate unlocked so that at night Odysseus can come back with Diomedes and steal the Palladium.

A few weeks pass. The Kheteioi (likely the Hittites), Troy's mightiest allies, have finally sent a relief force, and while the Greeks defeated them it was hard enough they actually left to raise reinforcements, leaving behind a lucky Wooden Horse to propitiate their navigation... Horse that the Trojans, after checking it with the help of Helen's voice imitation skills, have brought inside to sabotage the Greeks' voyage. They had to dismantle one of the gates because the Horse was BIG (clearly the Greeks didn't want it moved, and if the Trojans moved it THEY would get cursed in time for round 2), but they got the Horse, the Greek would face storms, and now the Trojans can get blackout drunk in celebration, because THEY WON! Sure, they'd have killer hangovers while they fixed the gate the next day, but that could wait. Even Deiphobus drank himself to sleep, and Cassandra with her prophecies of doom and that Aeneas guy who stayed sober are just ridiculous. Then Helen wakes up Deiphobus in the middle of the night, he opens his eyes and... Is that fucking MENELAUS in the room?! And why is Helen holding Deiphobus' sword and smirking? And why is the city burning? Wait, did Helen work with Odysseus to get the Wooden Horse full of warriors in and set Deiphobus up to get murdered by the man SHE chose as her husband all those years ago?

As you can see, Helen took charge of her own fate as soon as Aphrodite's spell lost effect, and that could be a nice thing to show. Sure, a bit cruent, but we're in the literal Late Bronze Age Collapse, she's the most badass woman in Greece of her age.

I don't know I'm not done talking about it. It's insane that I can't just uninstall Edge or Copilot. That websites require my phone number to sign up. That people share their contacts to find their friends on social media.

I wouldn't use an adblocker if ads were just banners on the side funding a website I enjoy using and want to support. Ads pop up invasively and fill my whole screen, I misclick and get warped away to another page just for trying to read an article or get a recipe.

Every app shouldn't be like every other app. Instagram didn't need reels and a shop. TikTok doesn't need a store. Instagram doesn't need to be connected to Facebook. I don't want my apps to do everything, I want a hub for a specific thing, and I'll go to that place accordingly.

I love discord, but so much information gets lost to it. I don't want to join to view things. I want to lurk on forums. I want to be a user who can log in and join a conversation by replying to a thread, even if that conversation was two days ago. I know discord has threads, it's not the same. I don't want to have to verify my account with a phone number. I understand safety and digital concerns, but I'm concerned about information like that with leaks everywhere, even with password managers.

I shouldn't have to pay subscriptions to use services and get locked out of old versions. My old disk copy of photoshop should work. I should want to upgrade eventually because I like photoshop and supporting the business. Adobe is a whole other can of worms here.

Streaming is so splintered across everything. Shows release so fast. Things don't get physical releases. I can't stream a movie I own digitally to friends because the share-screen blocks it, even though I own two digital copies, even though I own a physical copy.

I have an iPod, and I had to install a third party OS to easily put my music on it without having to tangle with iTunes. Spotify bricked hardware I purchased because they were unwillingly to upkeep it. They don't pay their artists. iTunes isn't even iTunes anymore and Apple struggles to upkeep it.

My TV shows me ads on the home screen. My dad lost access to eBook he purchased because they were digital and got revoked by the company distributing them. Hitman 1-3 only runs online most of the time. Flash died and is staying alive because people love it and made efforts to keep it up.

I have to click "not now" and can't click "no". I don't just get emails, they want to text me to purchase things online too. My windows start search bar searches online, not just my computer. Everything is blindly called an app now. Everything wants me to upload to the cloud. These are good tools! But why am I forced to use them! Why am I not allowed to own or control them?

No more!!!!! I love my iPod with so much storage and FLAC files. I love having all my fics on my harddrive. I love having USBs and backups. I love running scripts to gut suck stuff out of my Windows computer I don't want that spies on me. I love having forums. I love sending letters. I love neocities and webpages and webrings. I will not be scanning QR codes. Please hand me a physical menu. If I didn't need a smartphone for work I'd get a "dumb" phone so fast. I want things to have buttons. I want to use a mouse. I want replaceable batteries. I want the right to repair. I grew up online and I won't forget how it was!

the trump administration is already slowly taking away our rights, no longer legally recognizing us and only seeing two genders in america — male and female — and passports no longer taking new gender maker changes or x gender markers. this is just the start of it most likely

they've erased mentions of LGBTQ on government websites and removed pages related to honoring nex benedict and matthew shepard, like they never existed. we know they existed though and we need to keep both nex benedict and matthew shepard's names alive and remember what horrible violence and hate crime took them away from us.

this is not to scare anyone. this is to inform the masses on what our government is doing. censorship is actively happening around us. do you know the world is protesting for us? no? the united states have already started their censorship, their propaganda for this administration. do not let them censor us and hide us from the truth. speak up, learn, adapt, and inform others.
