I’ve done it everybody! Don’t have to do anything else! Yes!
Literally never been this lucky before! On my first 10 pulls! The game must have felt sorry for me since I couldn’t get any of the special memories for the past 2 events!

do you remember me too?
Tumblr media
pairing: sylus x mc reader
synopsis: love and deepspace was a newfound obsession of yours. you installed the game shortly after sylus was released as a love interest. it'd be safe to say he was the reason you installed the app. however, finals week was approaching and you had to say goodbye to your favourite game. not for long, ofcourse. but you decide to login for the last time to check the new event.
a/n: hello everyone! this is my first LADS ffc so please bear with me, and yep you probably guessed it. the reader somehow ends up inside the game. very typical, ik. but trust me, i have a different take on this. ALSO my first language is not english so please ignore grammer errors. i recheck atleast 10 times and still end up overlooking every mistake. enjoy!
check out all chapters here
Tumblr media
Chapter One
DING! DING!
You woke up to the shrill screech of your alarm. Eight already? Time always seemed to slip away faster during exam season. You had no idea when you’d finally dozed off, but judging by the heavy exhaustion clinging to your limbs, it couldn’t have been more than a few hours. No wonder I feel like shit. Groaning, you mustered every ounce of strength to reach out and silence the alarm.
It was Sunday. Golden sunlight spilled through the window, warming your face as birds chirped outside. A gentle breeze rustled through the trees.
The weather was perfect. Perfect for a picnic. But first, you had to finish your revision before the midday heat set in. Your gaze drifted to your study table, still littered with notes and textbooks exactly as you’d left them last night couple hours ago.
Okay, let’s see…
You closed your eyes, mentally retracing yesterday’s progress. Finished chapters 5, 6, 8, and 11. With a yawn, you cracked your knuckles, stretched, and forced yourself upright. If I can somehow finish chapters 2, 9, and 10 in two hours, I can reward myself with some outdoor time.
Grabbing your chemistry book, you flipped to the first page. Three chapters in two hours? Doable. Maybe.
Just as you reached for your phone to check the time, your eyes snagged on the date.
April 12.
OH. MY. GOD. Sylus’s birthday. Your fingers twitched toward the notification banner—then froze.
No. Not yet. The anticipation alone was fuel. If I finish early, I’ll have the whole day to play Love & Deepspace. Let’s do this!
“Mom! Three pancakes, please! I’ll be down in two minutes!” “You always say that—but fine!” Her voice faded as you bolted to the bathroom. True to your word, you slid into your seat at 8:03.
“Slow down, or you’ll choke,” your dad warned, peering over his newspaper. “I thought exams weren’t until next week. Do you have plans?”
“Picnic,” you mumbled around a mouthful of pancake. “But I need to review my notes first.” A glance at the clock—8:12—sent you sprinting back upstairs, your sister’s snicker trailing after you: “Why’s she acting like she’s never seen sunlight before?”
8:03 – Breakfast. 8:13 – Chapter 2. 8:52 – Chapter 2 done. Five-minute break. 8:57 – Chapter 9. 9:27 – Chapter 9 done. Five-minute break. 9:32 – Chapter 10. 10:11 – Chapter 10 done.
Holy shit. I actually did it. A disbelieving laugh escaped you. All this frenzy… for a fictional man. But this wasn’t just any man—this was Sylus. You’d been hoarding diamonds since the Tomorrow’s Catch-22 event, even skipping Zayne and Caleb’s 5-star memories.
A small sacrifice for the greater good.
You plugged in your phone, then made your bed, folded your sheets, and organized your desk. A sandwich, grapes, and a cold drink went into your bag, along with your sketchpad and pencils. The weather was too good to waste.
Stepping outside, the crisp air kissed your cheeks. Something about today felt… different. The birds’ chirping wasn’t grating for once. Even the neighbor’s usually yappy dog lay sprawled in the sun, too lazy to bark. The park was eerily empty—odd for such a gorgeous day—but you claimed a shady spot beneath a tree.
“The perfect day for my perfect man.” Smiling, you reached for your phone—
A tap on your shoulder.
“AH!” You whirled around. “S-Sorry! You scared me. I didn’t see anyone when I came in.”
The woman winced. “I did call out a few times…” Probably too busy daydreaming about Sylus.
“Have you seen a white cat? I swear I only dropped the leash for a second—” She raked a hand through her hair, scanning the park. “Sorry, no. Want help looking?” “No, no! Enjoy your day.” She dashed off before you could insist.
Weird.
You pulled out your phone—and froze. A cluster of dead pixels marred the corner of the screen. What? It was fine when I left. You’d just bought this thing last month. Did I drop it when she startled me? No, you were sure it had been unharmed until now. Shaking off the unease, you opened Love & Deepspace.
Five minutes passed.
Then ten.
Then fifteen.
“Seriously?!” The screen was frozen. Force-closing the app did nothing. Rebooting took forever. When you finally reopened the game—
“ERROR. PLEASE TRY AGAIN LATER.”
A dozen attempts. Same result.
Defeated, you trudged home, blinking back frustrated tears. After weeks of stress, this was the one thing you’d been clinging to. And now? Nothing. Maybe tomorrow… After all, the event had just started and you had atleast 6 more days. But with exams looming, would you even have time?
The neighbor’s dog was now snoring loudly. Inside, your family still sat at the breakfast table, all eyes snapping to you as you entered.
“Back so soon?” Mom frowned.
Dad lowered his newspaper. “How’d it go?”
“Unless she chickened out,” your sister sing-songed. “What, scared of needles now?”
You dumped your bag on the couch. “Went to the park. My phone’s glitching, so… yeah. Not in the mood anymore.”
“You’re not in the mood for the doctor?” Mom rushed over. “What does your phone have to do with anything?”
Doctor? Needles?
“I was just at the park.”
Your sister howled with laughter. “BAHAHAHA! SHE'S LOST IT!”
Dad set down his paper, removed his glasses, and leveled you with a grave look.
“Your appointment with Dr. Zayne. He scheduled it himself last week.”
Your blood ran cold.
“…Doctor who now?”

Hey LADS girlies, I hope you're doing well! I’ve put together a well-structured outline that can either be used to email Indold/Papergames/LADS or submitted through in-game surveys. It’s designed for easy copy-pasting, making it simple for people to send feedback. Thanks for your time.
✏️ Love and Deepspace In-Game Survey ✏️
Dear Development Team, I want to express my appreciation for the effort put into Love and Deepspace, but I have significant concerns regarding content gaps, balance issues, and recent event structures—particularly in relation to Sylus and limited-time outfits. Below is a detailed breakdown of these concerns.
1. Content Gaps
Sylus launched with significantly less content compared to the original three (OG3) love interests:
• He only has 1 anecdote and 1 bond story, whereas the OG3 each launched with 3 anecdotes and 2 bond stories.
• His memory selection is severely lacking:
• Sylus launched with only 6 four-star and 6 three-star memories, whereas the OG3 had 18 of each.
• At launch, his memory cards only covered 4 stellactrum colors (Pearl, Emerald, Sapphire, Violet), missing Ruby and Amber.
• Even now, his distribution remains imbalanced: 12 Pearl, 10 Emerald, 7 Sapphire, 2 Violet, 2 Amber, and only 1 Ruby.
This disparity makes it difficult for Sylus players to build affinity and progression at the same pace as those who favor the OG3.
2. Affinity Disadvantage
Due to missing content, Sylus players miss out on a significant 6,300 base affinity points, calculated as follows:
• 300 points per missing 4-star memory
• 100 points per missing 3-star memory
• 250 points per missing anecdote
• 1,000 points per missing bond story
When factoring in affinity gained through ranking up, upgrading, ascending, and awakening, Sylus players are left with a deficit of 32,316 affinity points, making it nearly impossible to reach the same levels as OG3 players without excessive grinding or spending.
3. Resource Inefficiency
Sylus players also face higher resource demands due to inefficient stellactrum distribution:
• His two primary colors (Pearl and Emerald) require resources from two separate bounty hunt battles, whereas the OG3 have their colors consolidated into a single battle.
• This results in higher stamina consumption, wasted time, and overall slower progression compared to OG3 players.
4. Higher Pull for Sylus and Caleb
Sylus, before Caleb, had a pull rate of ~11%-13% versus ~29% for the OG3 in the Silver | Radiant Galaxy explorers. Now, the numbers are as follows:
• Sylus and Caleb now have pull rates of 11%-12% and 7%-8%, respectively, versus 27%-26% for the OG3 in the Silver Radiant Galaxy explorer.
• Before Caleb:
• Silver Galaxy: Sylus 11% (17 / (17+44×3)) vs 29% for OG3.
• Radiant Galaxy: Sylus 13% (13 / (13+28×3)) vs 29% for OG3.
• After Caleb:
• Silver Galaxy: Sylus 11% (17 / (17+44×3+12)), Caleb 7% (12 / 161), OG3 27%.
• Radiant Galaxy: Sylus 12% (13 / (13+28×3+9)), Caleb 8% (9 / 106), OG3 26%.
Yes, each card individually has the same chance to be pulled, but obtaining any Sylus or Caleb card over the OG3 for building teams and/or infinity takes significantly more pulls.
5. Event Issues
A. Tomorrow's Catch-22 – Cumulative Wish Rewards
The event structure for Tomorrow’s Catch-22 compared to Yes, Cat Caretaker creates an unfair spending trap:
• In Yes, Cat Caretaker, the Cat Butler Outfits (with ears and tail included) were available at 75/125/175/225 Wishes.
• In Tomorrow’s Catch-22, the Memory-Themed Outfit and Hairstyle are now separated into different reward tiers (Outfit at 75/125/175/225/275, Hairstyle at 85/135/185/235/285).
• This means players must spend 1,500 extra diamonds just to get the complete look.
B. Savage Overture – Confusing Outfit Distribution
• Players receive "My" Outfit [DreamyHeart] for free, but "My" new Outfit [Night’s Companion]—which is the Memory-Themed Outfit—must be purchased.
• Typically, Memory-Themed Outfits are expected to be free, yet in this event, it has been placed behind a paywall instead.
• This is inconsistent with past event structures, where the new Memory-Themed Outfit should be included in the free rewards, while an additional outfit could be offered as a paid option.
• This shift makes the event feel more like an artificial spending trap rather than a rewarding experience for dedicated players.
Conclusion & Requested Actions
• Address Sylus’s content gap by adding missing anecdotes, bond stories, and memory cards to bring him to parity with the OG3.
• Balance affinity gains so Sylus players are not left permanently disadvantaged.
• Consolidate Sylus’s resource needs in bounty hunts for fairer resource management.
• Revert the event reward structure to the Yes, Cat Caretaker format, ensuring hairstyles and outfits are bundled together.
• Reassess pricing strategies for event-exclusive items to prevent excessive spending pressure.
Sylus players deserve the same content, rewards, and opportunities as OG3 players. I hope the team considers these concerns seriously and implements meaningful changes to improve fairness and engagement in the game.
Thank you for your time and consideration.

how do you manage LADS as F2P? I'm having a hard time collecting gems 😭 is so difficult compared to games like genshin
Okay so..i know it sounds difficult (IT IS) but it's not impossible.
the grind can be heartbreakingly annoying..i know! Before i used to find grinding in Genshin and HSR difficult but its..so doable and easier compared to Love and Deepspace 😭
Their constant barrage of Banner after Banner is another issue especially when they don't even run for long. FOMO gets to a lot of people who find it hard to spend due to personal reasons, which is just unfair. IMHO, every limited card banner should run for at least 30 Days.
And i think these are issues that should be thrown at the Devs every once in a while. So fill out the survey forms whenever available and list all your grievances to them. LADS isn't exactly F2P friendly.
-> However, with the launch of version 2.0, they're trying new stuff and giving out a bunch of Free 5 star memories as well as materials. So thats..something ig
It's also a fairly new game, one of a kind sorta thing..so i wanna give them the benefit of the doubt. They're still trying to find their way around things and i hope they gradually add better stuff for grinding of materials and gems. (Abyssal Chaos counts as one)
As for playing as F2P, here's how I do it..
If you can spend a little, then i suggest atleast buying the Aurum Pass (i have). It ain't much but it increases stamina cap to 170. And gives 100 gems + 60 stamina daily
only make pulls on a banner when you absolutely want that limited card
save up the red gems & empyrean wishes (blue tickets) for your bias/fav LI & make pulls only for his banners (unless you absolutely want a card of another)
Use your stamina daily. Don't let it stay full. Like expend at least 80 stamina in the morning. Then play again in the evening with a nearly full stamina cap.
Focus on one LI at a time & grind materials for him only. For example, i am a Xavier main so i expend 80 stamina for the yellow/green stellactrums (ascension material | fight Lemonette) and another 60~80 on the EXP bottles (experience material | fight Heartbreaker)
DON'T WASTE MATERIALS ON 3 STAR. You can waste them on 4 star cards but I don't suggest upgrading them more than Level 40 unless absolutely necessary (i.e. you don't have any other card options)
Fight Mr. Beanie once or twice regularly! You also need that gold to upgrade your memories.
And then of course, the achievements, completing a 5 Star memory story, tender moments and secret times also give gems.
Once a week try to grind for Protocores. Even your maxxed out 5 star memories are useless without good protocores. (50 : 100 ratio between crit. rate & crit. damage is ideal) And ofc, upgrade those protocores from time to time.
This all sounds like a lot but takes less than 20 minutes to do daily..And yes, you'll find some full length guides on Reddit & Youtube.
HOPE THIS HELPS YOU ANON ♡

Pulse Hunter / Sky's Embrace Guide
Tumblr media
to make the most out of this limited-wish banner here's a quick review of what to expect from pulse hunter/sky's embrace with some suggestions at the end. regardless if you're a new player pulling for the first time or a veteran player who has already experienced it during 2.0's launch i hope this helps prepares you. good luck with your pulls! may you get the memories you want 🫶
Tumblr media
🍎 What is Pulse Hunter / Sky's Embrace / Xspace Echo?
Tumblr media
Pulse Hunter is a limited-wish banner that was first introduced during Sylus's debut in Love and Deepspace version 2.0 - Opposing Visions (07/14/2024). This was the first time they introduced a 5-star selector banner like this, which is why you'll often see older players refer to this banner type as Pulse Hunter. It ran concurrently with Sylus's limited-time banner [No Defense Zone]. This special banner essentially guarantees that you will only pull one of the five selected memories within 70 pulls or less, depending on your luck. To differentiate between banner versions, they simply renamed this limited-wish banner as Sky's Embrace for or Caleb's debut in Love and Deepspace 3.0 - Cosmic Encounter (01/22/2025). Aside from the name change the structure of the banner is exactly the same as Pulse Hunter. This banner will also run concurrently with Caleb's limited-time banner []. Xspace Echo is the standard banner that's available permanently. It is NOT to be confused with the above limited-wish banners. ‼️ When pulling make sure you're on the correct banner ‼️ I cannot stress this enough. Do not mistakenly use your tickets on the wrong one.
🍎 What memories are available? How many can I choose?
Tumblr media
In this special banner players are allowed to select up to five 5-Star Memories (5) of their choosing from the Xspace Echo wish pool - no more, no less. All of the newly added Caleb's 5-star memories (2 solars, 3 lunar) will also become available. Companions you can obtain are the following: ⭐ Xavier's Lightseeker (LS) ❄️ Zayne's Foreseer (FS) 🐟 Rafayel's Abysswalker (AB) 🐦‍⬛ Sylus's Relentless Conquerer (RC) 🍎 Caleb's Farspace Colonel (FC) Take note limited-time 5-star memories are excluded from the selector, as they do not get included into the wish pool after their respective banner ends.
🍎 Can you change your selected memories?
Tumblr media
Once you confirm your selected 5 memories you CANNOT change them later on. It is important that you choose wisely.
🍎 What currency does it use?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There are two ways to pull on this banner-- Empyrean Wishes, obtainable through item shop / wish shop / chocolate shop / heartsand shop / completing agenda: weekly tasks. Diamonds.
🍎 How many times can we pull on this banner?
The cap for this banner is 350 pulls. After that you won't be able to pull anymore. With a maximum of 350 pulls you can obtain a minimum of five 5-star memories, potentially more if you're lucky to hit early or pull multiple 5-stars in one 10x.
🍎 What are the probability rates?
Tumblr media
There are no rate ups for this limited-wish banner. The rates are the same, as seen in the image above from the standard banner, Xspace Echo. As mentioned earlier this special banner guarantees that you will only pull one of the five selected memories of your choosing within 70 pulls or less.
🍎 Does pity carry over?
Tumblr media
Pulse Hunter/Sky's Embrace has a separate pity system. For veteran players, if you've pulled previously during Version 2.0 then your pity from [Pulse Hunter] will carry over into [Sky's Embrace]. You should be able to view your pull history once the banner is live. Your pity from the limited-time wish banner and Xspace Echo are different banners, therefore will not carry over into Pulse Hunter/Sky's Embrace.
🍎Banner pull rewards?
Tumblr media
Incentive rewards for pulling on [Sky's Embrace] are as follows: 25 - Wish Crate: SR x1 75 - Wish Crate: SR x1 100 - Sun Crate: Random x1 (from your selected 5) 200 - Sunlight Crate x1 (can choose from your selected 5) You can select the memories from the SR crates, however, those crates only contain 4-star solar memories obtainable through Xspace Echo. All of the selectable crates can only be claimed ONCE so make sure you pick the correct memory of your choosing when opening them.
Tumblr media
If you've made it this far thank you for taking the time to read all of this! As a veteran player who has pulled before here are my advice and tips!
Tumblr media
This is the BEST way to get any of standard banner Companions that you haven't unlocked yet! I highly recommend selecting solar memories over lunars, as they are harder to come by when pulling. Lunar memories will eventually be available on a rotation via the Wishing Well exchange shop for 180 stardust (blue crystals).
Tumblr media
You can exchange resources in game to obtain Empyrean Wishes to help save your diamonds for the limited-time wish banner instead. If you have to spend diamonds for pulls, the exchange rate is 150 Diamonds = 1 Empyrean Wish. HEARTSAND SHOP (weekly) * 5 Empyrean Wishes = 150 Memory Heartsand: SR (purple sands) * 10 Empyrean Wishes = 60 Memory Heartsand: SR (yellow sands) CHOCOLATE SHOP (weekly) * 1 Empyrean Wish = 600 Chocolates WISHING WELL* 10 Empyrean Wishes = 90 Stardust (blue crystals) [monthly discounted at 9/per] * 1 Empyrean Wish = 12 Stardust (blue crystal) [unlimited]
Tumblr media
MAKE SURE YOU'RE PULLING ON THE RIGHT BANNER! I said this before, but make sure you're on [Sky's Embrace] and not Xspace Echo. It didn't happen to me, however, I have seen horror stories of players accidentally wasting their Empyrean Wishes/Diamonds on the wrong banner.
Tumblr media
I know we're all excited to pull for Caleb, but I would highly recommend unlocking Caleb's companion / [With Him] via Main Story before pulling. That way you can start earning affinity points when doing your pulls for his memories. If you are also going to be pull for his limited-time banner, I would suggest pulling on that banner first before making your selection in Sky's Embrace. On the off chance you get that missing solar pair you can save that slot for another memory. Also note that we are going to get one of his lunar 5-star memories for FREE via event. So make sure you choose wisely when making your selection.
Tumblr media
What to spend your selectable 5-star memory crates on? If you haven't unlocked a companion yet I would suggest doing that over a memory duo rank up, just because it will help you in the long run should you need it to clear a trial or stage. But don't let me tell you what to do. If you want that duo rank 2 for the alternate outfit color or R3 sole for getting a complete duo rank 3 pair then go for it~
Tumblr media
...more will be added if I can thing of anything else. signal boosting: @hunters-association

Note
i think i'm just doomed to take forever making progress in deepspace trials lmao
which is ok!! i don't feel bored with the pace I'm taking it at. im just the kind of person who likes all of my memories to be at the same level and i do it in increments. all of my 4 and 5 star memories are level 50-55.
what i DO struggle with is protocores tho! especially after the new update, i'm sat here like "oh... you're meant to match protocores to memories they'd be most suited for? whoops"
i have just been giving each memory random SSR protocores and then enhancing them 😭 apparently this is not what you're supposed to do
- 🦭
that’s a great mentality/way to play the game <3 taking everything at your own pace is how things should be! if you’re enjoying your pace then it’s the right pace!!
oh girl….. yeah different companions need different protocores
FA caleb (farspace colonel) scales off DEF and focuses D2W. crit rate and dmg are largely useless to him
AS (abysm sovereign) scales off HP and greatly benefits from crit rate and dmg
foreseer zayne scales DEF and MoF zayne scales ATK
So the protocores def impact how strong your team is by a LOOOOOT 😭
if u ever need help building a companion i can try to help! i love the lads combat its so fun to me<3

the champion's prize: ch 3
Tumblr media
Fandom: Love and Deepspace Characters: Sylus/Reader
Summary: The Champion will marry the chief’s daughter. That’s how it’s been traditionally, as least. And as the next Champion, you know how Sylus’ story will end: one with no room for you, the daughter of a traitor, in it.
What you don’t realise is that he’s long had his sights set on a different prize altogether.
AU inspired by Sylus’ Grassland Romance date.

+++++++++++++
The orphanage head often spoke about death. You used to hear about it almost every day, along with the muffled sobs of adults standing at the entrance, and the wails of a new child being ushered in gently to join the rest of you.
You never really knew what it meant. Death, and what came after. Perhaps it was nothing, or perhaps it was an eternally peaceful slumber - like the kind of naps you enjoyed having on a summer evening. You had even overheard some of the adults saying that the dead would become stars in the sky; which only confused you because the dead were usually buried underground - how could they make it all the way up there?
Today, you think you’ll finally get your answer. Within the streams of what remains of your consciousness, you catch glimpses of a dream too good to be true. You see flashes of Sylus as he holds you tightly in his arms while riding a horse, the wind combing through his hair as the clouds pass you by overhead. Then there’s Luke and Kieran, safe and sound by your yurt, with a fire already going for dinner. They’ve never been the sort to dally where food is concerned.
It feels like any other peaceful day, and the entrance of your yurt is especially inviting today, given how heavy your eyelids are. The fatigue and exhaustion you feel is bone deep within you, and you suppose this must be it: your eternal slumber. A place where you’ll never have to worry another day about when Sylus will be coming home, or whether you’ll hit the number of targets needed to prove to yourself that you will one day make it as a warrior, or whether you’ll ever prove to the village that you belong.
None of it matters anymore. After all, you’re home now. With Sylus by your side tucking you into bed, holding your hand and promising you that everything will be alright. That you’ll feel better soon.
You believe it. You can feel the pain beginning to subside as he presses his hand to your cheek, his comforting warmth seeping into your skin like a warm blanket on a cold winter’s night.
You think you’ve fallen asleep now, but you can still hear him talking. Not singing a lullaby, thankfully, but his voice is there, telling you — demanding, even — to stay with him.
Funny. You always thought that would be your line. In your world, it felt like he was always the one going farther and farther away, while your feet were planted to the same spot on that same, distant hill.
But here he is; asking more softly now, for you to stay, in exchange for anything. Anything in the world.
Oh, silly Sylus. For someone so clever, he can be really dull at times.
You catch another glimpse of his face — or maybe it’s just a memory now. You can’t be sure. The sight of him fills your vision, blocking out the rays of the setting sun.
Just like this, he’s long become everything to you. Your whole world.
Good night, you want to say, but in this dream you can no longer find the strength to speak.
So you don’t.
Sleep takes you swiftly, and the final thought that lingers in your mind is a whimsical, curious question:
What would it be like to be a star in the sky?
+++++++++++++
When you wake up again, you find yourself engulfed in darkness.
It takes a while for your eyes to adjust fully, and when they do, you realise you’re tucked beneath the covers in your bed in your yurt, not shrouded by clouds in the sky. There’s a lamp nearby offering limited light in your yurt, and when you gingerly peel the thick blankets off of you, the tiny movement bringing a soft groan to your lips, you find your arms and legs thoroughly wrapped in bandages. The blood-stained bandages extend past the hem of the fresh set of clothes that you’re wearing.
You only have one guess as to who fixed you up; there’s really only one person it could have been.
Which means, he’s actually back, and all of that wasn’t just a dream.
Scanning your surroundings, you find yourself all alone in the yurt, and no trace of the man. He might be up to his usual nightly activities again; you wouldn’t be surprised if you walked out to find him in the midst of training. He’s always been a night owl, claiming that the night is quieter and more peaceful, with no one around to bother him.
No one, other than you, that is.
Carefully, you attempt to sit up. Your jaw remains clenched, biting back the whimpers and groans that threaten to spill from your lips as your muscles protest with every breath you take. It feels like you’ve been trampled on by multiple horses and no part of your body was spared.
All things considered, you’re lucky to have even come out of that alive. That wanderer… the thought of it brings a chill down your spine. It had completely and utterly outmatched you. If not for Sylus, you’d have lost your life at that moment.
Eventually, you manage to pull yourself up into a sitting position, but not without laboured breaths. You wouldn’t be surprised if you had earned a number of broken ribs after that one-sided beatdown.
But that’s really only the start of your problems. As you attempt to ease your legs off the side of the bed, you feel a sharp pain shooting down your swollen ankle. You recall the sight of your bleeding leg after taking that hard fall — this must be the result of it. A broken leg… that will probably take months to heal. Which means, no hunting and no archery practice for a while.
Bitter dread builds in your chest, thick and suffocating, and you swallow the lump that forms in your throat when you think about the next warrior’s tournament in just over half a year’s time. All that hard work up until now… it looks like you’ll have to wait another year to try again.
Which means another year of falling behind him, and watching him only from behind.
With a frustrated sniffle, you force your legs over the edge of the bed, ignoring the pain in your chest and in your legs. Reaching for the chair next to your bed for support, you carefully place your weight on your left leg, before pulling yourself off the bed to stand, while holding on to the chair for support.
You should be able to make a crutch for yourself with the wood you’d chopped a few days ago. The problem now is finding a way to get out of your yurt without falling flat on your face and breaking the remaining good bones in your body.
A timely solution to your problem presents itself when you hear footsteps approaching. Your pulse quickens in anticipation, and the seconds seem to stretch on as you wait. Without realising, your fingers have found their way into the fabric of your dress, clenching and twisting as you wait for your visitor to show himself.
The entrance flaps part, revealing an imposing, tall figure behind them. His red eyes seem to be glowing in the dark, and you see them widen as they land on the sight of you, pathetically holding on to a wooden chair for support. Then you look down, realising that there’s a second pair of smaller, red eyes staring back at you.
“Sunny…” you murmur its name, and its ears twitch as it whines softly.
You take a step towards the pair, having forgotten at that moment that your right leg can’t bear a single ounce of your weight. The moment you mistakenly apply pressure to it, you’re crying out in pain, and then you’re free falling towards the wooden floor.
Your eyes squeeze shut as your arms shoot forward to break your fall, but instead of the wooden floor boards, your face crashes into a hard muscle, and then you’re enveloped by warmth and the smell of fresh grass.
“Maybe I should have tied you down to the bed before leaving you here alone to find a new way to hurt yourself.”
The familiar deep voice rumbles in his chest, and you look up, meeting his eyes. From this close, you’re able to trace every curve, every line of his face and muscles in the silent, chilly night air. At first it feels like a dream, having him here in front of you after what seemed like an eternity of missing him. But in your dreams he looks healthier, stronger, instead of having dark circles under his eyes and cheeks that seem to have become thinner than before.
“You’re finally back,” you say, reaching up to place your fingers softly on his cheek. He leans into your touch, until his cheek is fully in your palm. The warmth of his breath assures you that this is real.
“And you’re finally awake,” he replies with a half-smile, hand pressing against your lower back to hold you flush against him, lest you fall again. “Just in time, too. I heard from Luke and Kieran that you dropped something at the lake.”
He gestures with his eyes to the little bunny resting in his other arm, and save for some dirt on its white coat of fur, Sunny looks unharmed, thankfully.
“His name is Sunny,” you correct the ignorant man, removing your hand from his face to gently stroke the bunny’s head.
“You must have been so scared, I’m sorry…”
“Yes, I believe an apology is in order, but not to the rabbit,” Sylus remarks, before bending down to put the rabbit back on the ground.
“Wait, Sunny isn’t hurt, is he— Hey!”
You’re suddenly weightless, the man having lifted you up without warning. Then you find yourself being manoeuvred backwards until you’re seated back on your bed, with Sylus’ hands placed on either side of your thighs.
Your protests promptly die on your tongue under his intense gaze, as he gives you a once-over and checks your bandages. You stop him before he can lift your dress, insisting that everything’s fine and that you’ll let him know if any wounds reopen.
He stares at you in silence for a moment, eyes dark and brooding. You return it with an equally stubborn and defiant look.
Eventually, Sylus relents with a long, heavy exhale. Seemingly deflated, he drops to the floor and rests his head in your lap. Naturally, your fingers move to thread through his silver locks, running through them in repeated, soothing motions.
“I’m sorry,” you tell him, meaning every word. “And thank you. For saving me. When did you return, anyway?”
“I got back a day earlier, since I thought someone might get bored waiting for me. Then I heard from Luke and Kieran that you went out riding, and decided to look for you. If I had found you even a moment later…”
His voice trails off as he takes one of your wrists, in his hand, squeezing it gently. “I would have lost you. For good.” His voice is trembling; you’ve never heard him sound so small before.
“I wasn’t planning to stay out for too long. The wanderer came out of nowhere, and…” you explain, voice growing smaller. It prompts Sylus to look up at you with an inquisitive stare.
“And what?”
Your hands ball into fists. “I… wasn’t strong enough.”
There’s a moment of shared silence before Sylus speaks again.
“Don’t blame yourself. Most of the warriors wouldn’t have survived that.”
“But you did. You beat that wanderer so easily.”
“I wouldn’t say it was that easy,” Sylus replies wryly. At first you’re confused, until it dawns on you that you’re not the only injured one in the room.
“Sylus… get up. Let me take a look at you.”
He’s unusually compliant and does as you say. It’s only when he stands up, figure towering over you, that you notice the bandages around his middle, his knuckles, and the bruises and cuts on his neck and arms.
Taking his right hand in yours, you gently run your thumb over his knuckles, noticing that his bandages are stained with dried blood. If he’s injured like this, then how is he going to keep up with the warriors’ training? Not to mention, it seems that he lost sleep taking care of you while you were out cold.
“Does it still hurt?” you ask.
“I’m fine. You’ve seen me more beat up than this,” is his straight reply, and you can’t argue with that. You’ve seen him come home beaten and bruised worse than this before.
Despite that, tears well up in your eyes, blurring your vision until they fall, one by one, onto his bandaged hands.
“You still cry every time.” With his other hand, he wipes the tears from your eyes, cupping your cheek to have your eyes meet his.
“But it must have hurt.”
“It would have hurt if I had lost you that day,” he mutters, tone turning somber and voice softening several decibels. His thumb strokes your cheek gently, as if to reassure himself that you’re with him, here and now, in this moment.
“But you didn’t,” you tell him. “I’m alright now.”
“Yes, alright for someone who can barely stand on her own with the help of a chair.”
You huff. “I’ll recover eventually. It’s just that…” your voice trails off as your face falls. “I don’t think I’ll recover in time for the tournament.”
“The tournament?”
There’s a slight quiver in Sylus’ voice now, but for a different reason entirely. When you turn towards him again, a chill runs down your spine. His red eyes are now burning like a hot fire, anger swirling in his irises.
You look away, already knowing what he’s about to say.
“Stop. I know you think I shouldn’t—”
“Forget about them. The village, the warriors, all of them.”
“You know I can’t.”
“They could care less if you died. What’s the point? You’d fight and risk your life for people like that?”
The words sting. They aren’t new, but the thorny edges of his words are like knives, sinking deep into your skin and piercing your veins.
“It’s only because my father—“
“You’re not your father.”
“Sylus, you don’t understand.” You remember the face of every crying orphan and adult who, behind the masks of rage and anger, were still mourning for their parents and children who never returned from that expedition. Each of them is a reminder of the failure and sin that you inherited from that man. And you’re not going to run away from it.
“No, you don’t understand. You don’t know what they—” He takes a sharp breath then, as if to stop himself from saying more.
Sensing there’s something more to this, you tug at his arm.
“What? Did something happen? Tell me.”
It takes a bit more prodding and poking before he relents, as he always does when you’re this insistent.
“They didn’t care if you died. I brought you to the village to have you treated, but no one was willing to save you. They gave me medicine and bandages for my wounds, but not for you.”
You expected it would be bad, that the truth would sting, but still didn’t expect the twist of the knife to hurt this much. Or maybe it’s the broken ribs hurting in your chest as you breathe.
“I… They…” Sentences. You need sentences. But your mind is drawing a complete blank and your mouth feels dry.
Your eyes fall to his hands. “Then, these bandages…” Your eyes dart from the clean bandages on you to the stained, old ones on him. “Sylus, your wounds—”
“They’re nothing compared to yours,” he cuts in. “I’m fine, but you were out for three days. I was starting to think that you wouldn’t wake up.”
You feel tears burning in the back of your eyes once again. It’s always been like this; Sylus has always shared the brunt of your fate with you, and you’re once again reminded of how different his life could have been if you hadn’t stuck to him back then in the orphanage.
“I’m sorry,” you murmur, having nothing else to offer him.
“It’s not your fault. It’s the village. They would have watched you die without lifting a finger. These people aren’t worth it.”
“What am I supposed to do, then? Give up? You know I can’t do that.”
“Let’s leave. Together.”
You do a double-take, running his words through your mind over and over again. Still, you can’t wrap your head around the absurdity of the suggestion.
“What?”
“We’ll leave the village. Forget about everything here.”
“We’d have nowhere to go. And I’d be abandoning the village just like my father did. Not to mention, you’d be branded a traitor too.” The bedsheets crumple in your fists. “You just became a warrior, Sylus. You’d be throwing everything away.”
“That’s fine by me.”
“It’s not. Not for me, at least.”
“Why? Is what they think really so important that you’d die to prove them wrong?”
It’s not about tha t, you want to tell him. He’d be throwing away a future that he’s worked so hard to build all his life, and only because he was angry on your behalf. You’d never forgive yourself if it ever came down to that.
Sylus has done more than enough, protecting you for as long as you can remember; it’s about time he chose himself over you.
“I won’t die,” you tell him firmly. “I promise.”
But the answer doesn’t seem to satisfy Sylus, who turns to leave.
“You don’t have the strength needed to be making promises like that.”
+++++++++++++
You’ve always hated the aftermath of arguments with Sylus. When you were younger and had your first fight, you remember crying for days afterwards. It didn’t even matter that the bullies would come back, hunting you down when they realised you were alone and not following Sylus around like you usually did. It was far more frightening to think that the one person who didn’t hate you was now gone, and that you had been well and truly abandoned.
When you wake up the next morning and find yourself alone in the yurt, the same anxiety back then seizes you, but you cast it aside immediately. You’re no longer a child, and you’re stronger than you were back then. Even if you and Sylus aren’t walking the same path any longer, you’ll forge ahead somehow.
Today, your journey begins with getting out of your yurt.
Standing up is difficult enough on its own. Thankfully, the chair is within reach from your bed, and you use it to slowly hop out, while its legs scrape against the floor. Each jump makes you groan and breathe with difficulty, but you push yourself along anyway. You’ll show that stupidly strong warrior that this much won’t be enough to get you down.
But the moment you make it outside, you find yourself facing an entirely new problem.
Your stomach growls, and you clutch it in an attempt to silence the noisy hunger pangs. Right. You haven’t had anything to eat or drink for a while. Is that why it’s getting harder to breathe, and why you’re starting to feel lightheaded?
Nonsense. It’s all in your head. You’re stronger than this.
Despite the self-encouragement, the dizziness only continues to build in your blurring vision. In order to catch your breath, you sink to the ground, holding on to the chair like it’s a plank of wood in the middle of an ocean. A pathetic display, but at least no one’s here to see—
“You woke up earlier than expected.”
…Great.
You look up to find Sylus squatting down to get a closer look at you, and you stubbornly turn away to hide your face.
“Go away.”
“I brought food and water. I’ll go away after you eat.”
You shake your head, knowing full well how childish you’re being, but this morning you’re thinking with your ego and not with your stomach. Sylus’ words from the night before echo in your mind, and you keep your gaze averted.
“What, mad about last night?”
“You’re the one who got mad first.”
“Maybe. But I was right.”
Ugh. Stupid Sylus thinking he’s all that just because he’s stronger than everyone else. You’ll show him and wipe that stupid arrogant smirk off his face.
You’re determined to stay strong, to ignore the painful dryness in your throat and the throbbing pain in your abdomen, but it’s at that moment that your stomach decides to betray you in the most humiliating way possible. It growls loudly, making its displeasure known, and you can hear the short breath of laughter that unwittingly escapes the man beside you.
“Stop laughing,” you complain, clutching at your stomach and mentally kicking yourself while your face goes up in flames. You feel the heat of the morning sun on your cheeks, illuminating the shame written all over your face.
“Who’s laughing?” Sylus asks, feigning innocence as he has the audacity to chuckle again.
“Just so you know, I’ll have the last laugh when I beat you at that tournament.”
“Is that so?”
“Yes. I’ll recover quickly and prove that I’m strong enough to survive on my own.”
“Good to hear, but I’m afraid you won’t be able to achieve that by dying of hunger and thirst here.”
Sylus leaves the plate of food and the drink by your side, before standing to leave. Your eyes follow him while your head remains turned the other way, watching from the corner of your vision as he leaves nonchalantly.
“If you want to catch up to me, then you’d better recover soon.”
