NGL I hate the way "They wouldn't say/do that" has basically become 'you can only write something if you adhere to canon at all times' 2.0

Man, sure makes me want to engage with fandom when I feel like people are going to be looking at everything I make with a magnifying glass to make sure that it's 100% canon accurate (or fandom agreed accurate) and never deviates from it.

so. the marauders were james, sirius, peter and remus, and from their era the most important canon characters are lily and snape. then there's mary, marlene, dorcas, pandora, barty, evan, and regulus - these characters (excluding barty) have little to no canon info and their entire personalities are made of headcanons. barty has a lot of canon info because end of the end goblet of fire and what a few chars (eg sirius) said about him.

the marauders were basically a popular friend group of bright kids, they're interpreted/hced as pranksters though i can't recall if that's canon - their 'jokes' were usually cruel or illegal (swm (<- that's occasionally debatable but i still think it's cruel idc), detention records) (the 'illegal' not as in something horrific i assume just something minor i assume) and their major creation - the marauder's map - was way too advanced for them to be dumbed down as frat boys. there was that post that said closest thing was tom riddle's diary and it lives in my mind rent free these geniuses. also there was that they were casually animagus at age fifteen. litr would've taken voldemort down in 2-4 business days i think but whatevr

there fanon selves are quite a bit different but we dont. we dont talk about that.

the popular ships !! this fandom is very very ship oriented, everyone is shipped with someone - it's how they're "relevant". if you see an aroace character just know they're never talked about. there's the main three: wolfstar (sirius and remus), jegulus (james and regulus) and rosekiller (evan and barty). there's of course jily <333, the most important ship in the entirety of harry potter. it's basically like.

jily: the blueprint, the classic. hating on this will make your friends turn their backs on you jily shippers r scary (i am a jily shipper)

wolfstar: what the fandom focus is, the most mainstream ship, hating on this publicly WILL get you death threats

jegulus: growing in popularity, purely fanon, hating on this will get you death threats !!!

rosekiller: crazy x crazy, "dark romance", very purely fanon

bartylus: cute !! slightly less popular but usually accepted

dorlene: most popular wlw ship, pure fanon, usually the only wlw ship you can find a semi-popular fic on

marylene/marylily: popular but only ever talked about as a second ship/pre-endgame ship, pure fanon

pandalily: "rare pair", usually shipped as a third ship to jegulus and rosekiller, very fanon

moonwater: pure fanon, "rare pair"

canon lore !!! yes my beloved. there's "the prank" which is when sirius told snape how to get through the shrieking shack to see remus being transformed, i love asking ppl abt this bc people usually never ever have the same answers ignoring marauderstok. there's halloween 1981 (when james and lily died), there's snape's worst memory (james and sirius bullying snape, snily breaking up), the marauders map, the letter (lily's letter to sirius).

there's the fanon stuff, too. mr tell me a fucking secret (atyd, remus bringing up sirius' trauma because he was annoyed), grant chapman (my man, remus' victim atyd), tomny and tonya (tcotp), the sixth year kiss (atyd, wolfstar first kiss), "no one ever thinks to look up" (crimson rivers (?), evan's death i think (??)), "why'd you burn the letter, it wasn't from mum it was from me" (regulus to sirius on sirius' birthday, atyd), and um. others i havent read any of the big fics :((. if you wanna be part of the fanon marauders fandom you can read all the young dudes, the cadence of part time poets, art heist baby, crimson rivers, what happened to the young young lovers, just lovers etc etc, BUT if you wanna be part of the canon marauders fandom <333 um idk i dont have any long ship recs :( but tumblr's your best bet i think !
