Gotham Review - 4x21
I delayed this review a bit due to stressing and tweeting over season 5. Now I can edit this review properly :) Congrats Gothamites! Â
An episode starting off with Lucius and Harvey scenes? Already a good episode.Â
âListen, Jim found his way out, understand?â I love how confident Harvey is in Jimâs survival. Either that or denial because he loves his best friend so much.Â
On second thought, he probably knows that Jimâs plot armor shall be his salvation!
Oof all those cops talking smack to Harvey over the Pyg fiasco. Now is not the time to be questioning his authority, people. Donât let them get to you, Harvey!Â
Thank you, Harper. I have always loved you. Please donât ever be cannon fodder.Â
Oh, I completely forgot that no one knows about Jeremiah being evil yet. All they know is about Jerome followers and Bruce/Jeremiah possibly being in danger.Â
Snazzy clothes Jeremiah!Â
Yeah, he does not like being compared to his brother. Always insulting Jerome any time that someone mentions him.Â
An evacuation huh? Hmm...
Huh. I kind of expected a bit of a more emotional response from Babs and possibly Oswald over Jim dying. I think Oswald is masking his pain with a styling wardrobe and money.
âor woman power, if you willâ Awe look at Ozzie all for woman power lol
Using Butchâs âconditionâ to get what you want, Oswald? I see what youâre doing.Â
Tabby giving her girlfriend puppy dog eyes to get what she wants. How can you say no to that, Babs?
Oswaldâs expressions always get to me XD
They saved your life from Jerome, mayor. Itâs best just to roll with it and do what they say.
Great. Now Bruce will be blaming himself for Jeremiah and the whole city destruction because of Wayne Enterprises funding it. As if he needed more things to blame himself for.Â
Yeah, Jim would probably nag at Bruce to stay away, only for Bruce to not listen anyway. So, even with Harvey in charge, Bruce is right on track :P
The first thing you say on the phone is that you hope he didnât catch a cold? As if that is his first concern when you are answering Alfredâs phone lol
You are going to prove you're his best friend by driving him insane, killing his butler, and destroying the city? Hereâs a thought: buy him a card or dinner instead!Â
Lee and Jim interacting once again. Well, that was quick. Always awkward when you keep running into your ex.
Oh! Of course, it would be because of Ed that Jim is alive. Ha! Wonder if he will regret that decision later on.
âBruce, I am going to be here whenever you need meâ Awww thatâs so sweet.
If she wasnât such an important character, Iâd almost think itâs a death foreshadowing.
Ed with the doubting and jealousy. Come on, you knew she was using you. Why are you still on this?Â
Okay, I love the idea of Ed helping to solve Jeremiahâs plans...but this isnât exactly what I had in mind.Â
I love seeing Lucius and Harvey working together to save the day. We donât see enough of their scenes.Â
âLucius, English pleaseâ I feel like I hear the âEnglish pleaseâ in every show that has to do with technology or science these days :P
Part of me doesnât believe Jeremiah envies Bruce going through his âone bad dayâ but another part of me wouldnât be surprised if he truly does.
No, donât kill Alfred! That wonât make things better!
I donât say it enough but great acting with Cameron. I never once ever see Jerome or Jeremiah as âoh thatâs just Cameronâ. I automatically see them as two separate characters with two separate personalities. Fantastic acting! Why is this cast so gifted?Â
Oh my gosh...all of these characters. In the same room. Together. I love it.Â
Oswald twirling that trigger is just fabulous.Â
Money? Wait, all you want is money? You are all okay with the city being blown to bits? Even Oswald?Â
I really hope they are expecting the unexpected here. Babs is right âis that it?â You shouldnât underestimate. Itâs a trap!
Yeah, I wouldnât have let him walk away if I were you...
Oh okay! So they do want to help save Gotham. Good to know. Â
Gee Oswald, say it louder why donât you...
Plan #2 is a bazooka? Well, now Iâm intrigued with a plan #3.Â
You know, the more you insist you arenât insane, the more people suspect you are insane.Â
âNo! You promised the city 6 hours!â I got to say, I love how Babs has been written and shown these past few episodes. She just seems like she is given so much more depth. I also love that all of the villains are bad but have their own levels/rules of bad. Destroying a city and thousands of people is just too extreme for them.
Jeremiah is one fast runner. Did he ever run track in school?
Scarecrow! I really want to know how he got Jonathan involved with this. Was it the whole âyou knew my brotherâ thing? Or Jonathan just felt like it?Â
Ed seems to be the only person so far that doesnât care if the city turns to rubble. Given his past comments, it doesnât really surprise me. At the same time, does he not care to save even his friend âthrough thick and thinâ?Â
âIâm with Lee nowâ Oh here we go...
Ugh Iâm sorry. I canât with these scenes. Itâs just so cringy.Â
I like that Jim uses the word âvalidateâ. Itâs such a good word to use for Ed.Â
Exactly! No one truly knows Lee the way that they think they do.Â
âOh Jim, sheâs with me in every way...â I didnât need to know this. Somehow, I donât know if I believe that. But honestly, this is Ed. He could just mean âevery wayâ as âI teach her how to riddleâÂ
Wow...this whole âten times the killerâ thing. I mean, Jim was a soldier and he has shot a lot of criminals in the past seasons but like...his motives were still somewhat different. I canât tell if he is just agreeing to the killer thing because he feels guilty about all the deaths that were because of him (more likely) or there was a part of him that knew that him agreeing to Edâs words was the only way for Ed to finally help him. Â
I love when Ed is solving puzzles and being smart, showing off his knowledge.Â
âEd, wait, thereâs one thing I canât figure outâ No! Ugh, Ed! Donât be this stupid. You should be smarter than this! âOne? Being a little kind to yourself...â Okay, that helped a little lol He just had to slide a comment like that in there.Â
âHARVEY!â It just wouldnât be a Gotham episode without Oswald yelling. Or dressing amazingly. Or giving expressions that are moods.Â
Harveyâs relief to see Jim alive and then the hug. So nice :)
Harvey: we just need to know the locations. Jim: *walks in* I know the locations. Me: Could that be any more conveniently timed?Â
Selina and Scarecrow! Interacting! Sweet.Â
Foxy being all helpful :) Heâs getting some nice screen time this episode.
Oh, this is all toxin then. Is he really even seeing what he thinks heâs seeing?
Oh my gosh...the cutting of the smile. This has to be the toxin, right? This canât actually be Alfred.Â
Selina finding a man in the closet? Must be Alfred. I thought Jeremiah asked them to kill him?Â
Selina helping Bruce through it and getting his attention. So intense.
The looks shared between Bruce and Alfred. Heâs so relieved! ...What? No hug!? Missed opportunity. Harvey took the hug quota in the episode I guess? Eh, he deserved them though. Â
âLucius, theyâre identical...â Harveyâs shaken and upset voice :(
Ooh Jim being savage.Â
Eeny meeny...? Really Harvey? lol
YES! HARVEY DID IT! A hero right there. He looks so happy.Â
Another failed trigger. Gotham just never wants triggers to work well.
Oh, Jeremiah is pissed. Very intimidating.Â
Haha he ran so fast out of there.
I admire that he has so many back up plans. Thinking ahead.Â
*burns his followers*Â âHmm...well, thatâs disappointingâ lol
Wait, is that all of your followers? What happened to Ecco?
âEver since we teamed up, everything has gone to crapâ True but it isnât the finale yet. Oswald tends to get back on top at that point.Â
Yeah, I definitely think Oswald hasnât been forthcoming with this Strange stuff. I sense many ulterior motives.Â
Man, I just noticed that Oswald, Ed, and Jeremiah are all being outsmarted and foiled from their plans today. Just canât catch a break to blackmail or murder.Â
Yup, it was also Ed that did that :) When are Jeremiah and Ed going to share a scene, huh?Â
Raâs! I had a hunch.Â
âyouâre behind me, arenât you?â So, Jeremiah is familiar with tropes and âscaryâ movies, I see?Â
Jeremiah: no thanks. Raâs: *mentions Bruce* Jeremiah: Okay! Letâs do this! What are we waiting for? *is already running out the door because itâs apparently his favorite sport*
Ed is going to be creeping and listening-yup. It figures.
Why am I not surprised that Ed is listening to all this? Yeah, I predict he is going to go after Lee, Jim, or both of them now...and fail at it because of plot. Oh, this is not going to end well.Â
Okay, this is conflicting. On one hand, I find this whole thing aggravating. I hate that Ed is always involved with love storylines and seemingly acting dumb because of it. I hate that Lee fell into that too. At the same time, in terms of his behavior in this episode, this is such an Ed thing to do in a way. He is insecure and seeks validation. That really fits his character. His paranoia is also understandable. Heâs always been that way and made stupid decisions because of it. Like when he was paranoid that Jim was onto his murder of Kristen in S2 and blew it all for himself. So, that part of the storyline actually makes sense, which is why I can see him ruining everything next episode because of that paranoia. At this point, I just hope it gets resolved quickly.Â
Awwww! Everyone applauding Harvey! Giving him the appreciation he deserves! I love this so much! Itâs about time!Â
Lucius and the GCPD joking with him lol
Aww another Harvey hug in an episode. That hug! So touching! I love it!
Are they gonna-yes! They actually kissed this time!Â
Well, at least one ship is happy. *Jeremiah shoots Selina* You just canât let people be happy for more than a few seconds? Can you Gotham?Â
Bruce, your security system sucks. If you even have one.
Selina! No! I know you wonât die but still!Â
Hey, is that a new hat? Okay, how can Jeremiah have two new hats in one episode and Ed have his bowler hat yet Oswald gets nothing but a hallucination? A travesty. Jeremiah does pull them off though.
I hope Jeremiah gives Oswald his second hat as a way to broker a peace or something. Or Oswald just steals it after firing his machine gun at him, not being able to kill Jeremiah though.Â
Jeremiah doesnât even care that heâs getting beaten up. Heâs just like âwhatever. I expected thisâÂ
So much silence of sound. The intensity... poor Selina. Poor Bruce, having to deal with another loved one shot in front of him.Â
This was seriously the plan? Walk in, shoot Selina, get beat up? Does Raâs want her hurt so that he can leverage some Lazarus water or something? How does Jeremiah getting arrested fall under this?Â
Overall: Great episode. Many of the characters dealing with the same threat, which I love. Everyone banding together against Jeremiah, who I am very much enjoying thus far. I loved seeing the team-ups and interactions. Different changes of pace. Oswald and Butch/Grundy team up with Babs and Tabs to take down Jeremiah. It fails. They decide to go find/threaten Strange to help Grundy. Ed and Jim have a Lee conversation, Ed helps decipher Jeremiahâs plans and then gets knocked out by Jim. Trouble brews with Ed/Lee/Jim. Lucius teams up with Harvey to stop the explosions. Harvey disables it. The GCPD celebrate him. Jeremiah tries to drive Bruce crazy. It fails. Jeremiah burns all his followers. Jeremiah teams up with Raâs. Bruce and Selina save Alfred. They kiss. Jeremiah shoots Selina in the gut and Alfred starts beating him up.Â

Gotham 4x22 - Review
Better late than never? I had a fever when watching this so...weâll see how this goes.Â
Intense scene. âPromise?â I doubt she will die but this breaks my heart. Poor Selina :(
I have a hunch Bruce wonât be able to keep that promise.
All the cops giving Jeremiah the death stare.
âWe couldnât talk with his girlfriend bleeding all over himâ Hmm...well, maybe you shouldnât have shot her then?
âI am a very good engineerâ So modest. Iâm curious how well he would get along with Ed :P
Jeremiahâs obsession with Bruce never seizes to amaze me. Such a contrast to Jerome. Jerome wanted Bruce to suffer and die, Jeremiah wants Bruce to suffer and then become dark as he joins him.
Hugo Strange! They skipped finding him and threatening him and went straight to this!
Iâm surprised Hugo automatically knows how to cure him. Has this happened before? Is there another Grundy running around?
This is not going to work out well for them. No couple gets a happy ending in Gotham.Â
âWhat? No, sheâs in surgery. Iâm going to go kill Jeremiah!â Haha well, that figures. You go, Tabby! I do love how much she cares for Selina. She has such a heart for her. Â
I am suspicious of what Oswald will do when Tabitha leaves. Heâs being too nice. I sense betrayal.
Well, hello Raâs. Thatâs not creepy at all. I wouldnât be surprised if that is how he meets his best friends.Â
And another mayor bites the dust. At what point will people refuse to become mayor and theyâll have to draw names out of a hat to make someone take the role?
The way violence seems to un-faze Jeremiah. Itâs like a punch to the face or a push to the wall means nothing.
Arrest Jim? Well, thatâs a little extreme for disagreeing.Â
âItâs polite to let people finishâ Yeah Jim, he has barely gotten to give riddles this season. Donât ruin it!
âRISE AND SHINE! Good morning sweetheartâ First off, the sweetheart ;) Second, I will not be surprised if people start setting this as their ringtones.Â
âRemember when you punched me in the face?â *slaps him dramatically* Wow, even his slaps are extra.Â
âWe are a little pressed for timeâ *laughs at his own joke* ...wow, this is probably the most relatable Ed has ever been. Â
Ed with his long and extreme ways of killing someone.Â
I hate the motive but I do love seeing Ed go full on like this :)
So...does Raâs really turn out the lights for dramatic effect? Is there someone working for him that turns it off? Raâs: ready? go! Man: *turns off light* Raâs: *fights people* Man: *turns it back on* Me: Bet heâs fun at parties.
Some of his power is off? Hmm...I still donât understand the whole point of this Babs and the painting of the look alike.Â
This all just points to Raâs totally trying to use her for the power.Â
What? This guy doesnât even care anything about Jim at all? I mean, I know he isnât exactly priority but still...
âCloser Please. Closerâ I just expect him to keep saying this until they are face to face.Â
Destined as best friends? Well, youâre destined as something alright...
The wink XD With his bad eye, no less
I sincerely doubt that was the only bomb that was planted.
The way Jeremiah talks about Selina. Savage!Â
Wow, Lee is acting so calm about this.Â
âI am going to decide who I am going to be. Not you, not Jim Gordon.â Yes! Love it.
Lee is totally manipulating Ed by pretending not to care if Ed kills him so that she saves Jimâs life. Itâs too obvious.
âShe chose meâ Umm not exactly Ed.Â
âOne question: who do I get to kill?â Oh, Oswald, strutting in and ready to fight. He just couldnât stay away.Â
Alfred, Babs, Tabby, and Oswald all working together? I love it!
Better hope Ed isnât secretly listening to all this.Â
Honestly, at this point, I want Lee to be done with these romances. I just want her to be happy and independent for awhile.
Basically, Raâs and his plan is âmehâ to Jeremiah. Heâs just all in it for Bruce.Â
âThe brother I never hadâ â...togetherâ aww how twistedly sweet of you.Â
Oh, so now he cares what happened when Jim was taken?Â
Just listen to Jim!Â
I love seeing the GCPD being so loyal. They have come a long way.Â
The demonâs head not working I guess is the convenient way to explain how they all get the drop on him.
Ha! I love how Oswald is the only one screaming as he shoots the gun, while everyone else just runs in. Honestly, it wouldnât be an episode of Gotham if he didnât.Â
Wait, Oswald shot Jeremiah and saved Tabby? Iâm just...that seems so weirdly nice. This is the same person that murdered his mother and yet heâs doing this. Not like they would let Tabby die though. Is that the surprising thing for RLT? Him saving her? My memory of the interview is so vague all of sudden. No...it has to be a bad thing. This canât be it.Â
Are you kidding me? They stab and kill him again? I mean, I never LOVED Raâs but he was barely even alive!Â
That grin on Jeremiah. I oddly love how devilish it looks.Â
*Lee stabs Ed* What?! Oh, I did not see this coming. *Ed stabs Lee* Double stabbing! That one I was expecting.Â
Seriously? A kiss now?Â
So, in 4x14, Ed almost killed himself so that he wouldnât try to kill Lee...now here we have Lee and Ed trying to kill each other. How poetic.
Whoa! Butch is back! ...Is he about to die?Â
Iâm kind of sad by how kind of shallow it is that Tabby doesnât say âI love youâ until he is back to being Butch. Also a bit sad by how confusing the relationship status is with Babs/Tabby too. Â
*Oswald shoots him* Wow, he actually did it!
âDid you think I forgot that you murdered my mother?â Oh my god... YES. I mean, itâs sad that Butch is dead and I love Drew but like...I was just thinking about how Tabby killed Gertrude ...And I love callbacks way too much.Â
Wow. So, he waited and planned to get her back for two seasons. This is some crazy stuff. Impressively ingenious.Â
Hey, when did Oswald get the new henchmen?
*pans on Butchâs dead body* :( So sad...is that a tear rolling down his cheek? Was Butch crying? (UPDATE: It is very possible that was Drew crying from it being his last scene and now if that is a tear, this scene is even sadder.)
So, Selina wonât be able to walk? Surely this wonât last...at least I wouldnât think. Unless they are going for something different.
Yes! You go, Bruce! Itâs sad that you are leaving Selina but I love this. Be the dark knight! I hope this means Bruce will be the one to fight Penguin, Riddler, Jeremiah, Mr. Freeze, Scarecrow, and other new rogues next season.Â
Oh yes!!! Love the new digs for Penguin.Â
All these rogues carving up their territory. The montage, the costumes, the music. I love this so much. Why must season 5 be so short and be in 2019?Â
Savage Jon! Scarecrow got a new hat! I like :)
âPenguin says fix âemâ Wait...Ed and Lee? Did they die? First, the thought of Penguin going straight to Ed after all this mess and refusing to accept Edâs death makes me very happy. Second, oh my god! What is that smirk, Strange? What are you going to do?Â
Is she about to blame Penguin for everything? Ah, men...I mean, she has had a rough go with men so I guess I can see where her understanding goes.
Yay! Harvey and Foxy are staying :)Â
I didnât even realize Jeremiah got away. Sneaky!
The future bat signal! I love it.Â
âI stayed to fight for the cityâ ...Wow. I was half expecting Jim to disapprove. Guess he knows itâll be pointless and Bruce would just do whatever he wants anyway.Â
Manbat! Sweet. Hello mother, how are you? Wow, brutal.
Part of me is excited, the other part is hoping all of this wonât be too much in the final season.Â
Season 1 callback to their first meeting. âThere is lightâ Love it :â)
Overall: Wow! What an episode! I loved it. Crazy to think that this is the last one for about a year but it definitely left an exciting impression.
Jeremiah was fun and had some great interactions with Bruce. Really building up that relationship in the past few episodes, which was nice. Overall, heâs great. However, I do still wish they could have introduced him sooner. We didnât get to see enough. My hope is that we see plenty more of him next season.
Not a lot of Selina in this episode. Nice homage though. Iâm curious where this story will take her, now that she is currently paralyzed. Â
The Oswald/Butch thing was sad. I mean, Iâm sad for Butch and I love Drew so it sucks. Drew is an amazing actor and I will miss his presence very much. Also, no Grundy :/ That being said, it was a surprise reveal and callback that I did not see coming. Iâm so used to so many shows always forgetting plot points or being so serial. So, any time that a show does a callback, I love it. It reminds me that the writer's actually remembered their work and that the characters think about their past. And, for someone that murdered a man for insulting Gertrudeâs singing in S1, it would be odd for Oswald to just forget about Tabby murdering Gertrude. The writers found a way to keep Oswald in character while also keeping Tabitha alive, only they had to sacrifice Butch and push the Butch/Tabby relationship a bit in order to do it. That kind of leaves me conflicted :/
The whole Lee/Ed thing is...well, I think it is over and they will now focus on their own separate stories, which I prefer at this point. Iâm curious what Strange will do to them next season. Doubt it will be anything major physically though.Â
Looks like rogues are taking territory, which is awesome! I expect every rogue to go embrace their personas like never before and now fully go up against Bruce. Thereâs also a few other rogues they are going to slip in, which will be fun.Â
All around, there is a lot to look forward to. Wanted to make this review a bit extra long, since it was the final one of the season. I wanted to cover some of the main things that I enjoyed. There were a few things that left me conflicted, like Ed/Lee stuff, Butch dying, and Raâs dying AGAIN, but I still really loved the episode. Canât wait to see what is next!  Â
