Opioid Addiction Treatment - AKUA Mind & Body
Opioids, also known as nature’s painkillers, are incredibly addictive and are responsible for the opioid crisis, which has taken thousands of lives over two decades. Opioid addiction treatment is difficult because of how addicting opioids are and the intense withdrawal effects that occur when individuals stop taking opioids.
Opioids are derived from the opium poppy plants, but many, such as fentanyl, are now synthesized in a laboratory. Prescription opioids such as Percocet, Vicodin, and Lortab are strong pain relievers used for acute severe pain but are often overprescribed for minor and chronic pain. Stronger opioids such as fentanyl and morphine are commonly used in a hospitalized setting and for cancer-related pain. Opioids are incredibly addictive as they suppress physical pain and create a sense of euphoria because they are known to release a large amount of dopamine in the brain. Opioids work on the brain's reward center, and therefore the cravings become stronger after each use. Opioid addiction can interfere with your personal and professional life and result in financial hardship and even trouble with the law.

Opioid Addiction Statistics
Opioid dependence affects approximately five million individuals in the United States each year.
Opioids are responsible for 17,000 deaths each year in the U.S.
Individuals who are addicted to prescription opioids are 40% more likely to become addicted to heroin.
From 2010 to 2017, heroin overdose deaths increased by five-fold.
Americans make up approximately five percent of the world’s population but are responsible for 80% of the world’s opioid supply consumption.
On average, 130 Americans die every day from an opioid overdose.
Risk Factors for Opioid Addiction
Chronic pain that is improperly treated
Poor social support
Depression
Commonly Abused Opioids
Hydrocodone (Vicodin and Lortab)
Oxycodone (OxyContin and Percocet)
Oxymorphone
Morphine
Codeine
Fentanyl
Methadone
Heroin
Signs and Symptoms of Opioid Intoxication
Opioids can be life-threatening and can result in overdose even during your first time using. Prescription opioids that are not taken as prescribed or opioids that are purchased on the street can cost you your life. Opioids purchased on the street can be laced with other dangerous substances. The following are signs and symptoms associated with opioid intoxication:
Euphoria
Emotional numbness
Drowsiness
Slurred speech
Slow, shallow breathing
Dizziness
Confusion
Poor coordination and balance
Pinpoint pupils
Itching
Sweating
Constipation
Naloxone: Opioid Addiction treatment reversing drug
Depending on the opioid, the dose, and what it is mixed with, overdose can occur within minutes. Naloxone, an opioid reversal drug, can be given to stop opioid withdrawal effects. This drug will elicit immediate opioid withdrawal effects and, if administered in time, can also prevent respiratory depression. This life-saving medication can be purchased over the counter and is strongly recommended for any individual who has struggled with opioid addiction. It is also recommended for loved ones to carry Naloxone.
Opioid Withdrawal
Opioid withdrawal is not life-threatening but can be uncomfortable and even painful. Opioid withdrawal symptoms can leave you feeling like you want to use them again to mask these unpleasant withdrawal side effects. Depending on the specific opioid and the dose, opioid withdrawal symptoms can occur 8-12 hours after the most recent opioid dose and peak 24-48 hours after the last use. These withdrawal symptoms can last up to two weeks, and therefore detoxification, which is the first step in the treatment process, usually is a one to three-week process.
Signs and Symptoms of Opioid Withdrawal
Diarrhea
Rhinorrhea (runny nose)
Sweating
Lacrimation (tearing)
Shivering
Nausea
Vomiting
Insomnia
Tremors
Abdominal pain
Bone pain
Muscle aches
Do you have an opioid addiction?
Opioid addiction, whether prescription painkillers or heroin, can be life-threatening. It can ruin your relationships, wreak havoc on your professional life and finances, negatively affect your physical health, trigger mental health and eating disorders, and increase your incarceration risk. Opioid addiction can occur in as little as a few weeks. If you are susceptible to opioid addiction, it is important to talk to your doctor about taking pain relievers that do not contain opioids.
The following are signs you should seek professional treatment for your opioid addiction:
Withdrawal symptoms in the absence of opioids
Tolerance (needing a higher dose to induce the same effect)
Engaging in illegal activity while high
Engaging in criminal activity to obtain opioids
Doctor shopping to seek more opioid prescriptions
Purchasing opioids off the street
Mixing opioids with other substances
Cravings for opioids
Drastic changes in mood
A decline in work performance
Social isolation
Covering up your opioid addiction by hiding pills and lying
Driving under the influence of opioids
Opioid addiction treatment options
Detoxification is the first step in opioid treatment. Detoxification consists of administering medications in a supervised setting to lessen the withdrawal side effects. Medication-Assisted Treatment for opioid addiction successfully prevents withdrawal side effects, helps avoid future cravings, decreases overdose deaths, and lessons criminal activity associated with opioid addiction. Buprenorphine (Suboxone), methadone, and naltrexone are the three medications that can be given during detoxification and are often still needed in long-term treatment management. Methadone and buprenorphine (Suboxone) are opioid-like medications that help treat pain without eliciting euphoria or triggering the brain’s reward system. As a result, these opioid-like medications are not as addictive compared to pure opioids. Naltrexone works by blocking opioids and will cause withdrawal effects if opioids are still an individual’s system. Naltrexone helps prevent future cravings and, therefore, is often used for long-term opioid addiction treatment.
Psychotherapy approaches are also necessary for opioid addiction treatment. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectal Behavioral Therapy, Interpersonal Therapy, and Family Therapy are psychotherapy approaches that can help uncover and treat your underlying triggers and any co-occurring mental health disorders. Depending on the seriousness of your addiction, residential treatment or intensive outpatient is usually required. After a certain amount of time, you can step down into a lower level of care, such as outpatient therapy. In conjunction with addiction support groups, outpatient therapy is recommended for the best outcome in your long-term recovery.
Seeking help for opioid addiction
If you or a loved one is experiencing signs and symptoms associated with opioid addiction, it is essential to seek professional treatment as soon as possible. The sooner treatment is administered, the less likely complications will arise, and the more likely the individual will be able to successfully navigate life without debilitating symptoms. The first step is recognizing the signs and symptoms, and the next step is contacting a reputable treatment center.
AKUA Mind and Body focuses on treating addiction and any associated underlying triggers. We believe that addiction is a disease, and each individual is affected differently and, therefore, will need tailored individualized treatment. At AKUA Mind and Body, we believe that addiction treatment should be handled on a multifaceted level, and consequently, a typical opioid addiction treatment program will include detoxification, psychological care, medication management, behavioral assessments, and aftercare.

Your Compact Guide to Suboxone Clinics
Tumblr media
Addiction to opioids is a severe issue that is only becoming worse. The good news is that there are currently effective treatments for opioid dependence. Most significantly, these treatments depend on your time and dedication to function well. They are therefore challenging to keep up over time. Suboxone clinics provide Medication-Assisted Suboxone Treatment (MAST) under medical supervision. Professionals can assist you in safely weaning yourself off of opioids while offering support through TCS, plus other resources required for the duration of the healing process. Suboxone lessens the withdrawal symptoms associated with stopping abruptly while preventing the development of opiate or prescription painkiller addictions. All you need to do is google "free walk in suboxone clinic near me" to start the journey. In this blog, we'll discuss the suboxone clinics, so you choose the right one for you or your loved ones.

Crucial Factors You Need to Consider When Choosing a Treatment Program for Opioid Addiction
Tumblr media
This blog explores the aspects you should take into account while selecting an opioid addiction treatment center for rehabilitation. Substance abuse issues affect millions of Americans, demonstrating the widespread prevalence of the problem. If you're battling addiction, asking for professional help is the best course of action. Rehabilitation facilities provide a wide range of services, including therapeutic recreation, cognitive behavioral therapy, and medical detoxification. Another thing to consider is whether you need a local program or one that is away from your current social circles. If you have dual-diagnosis, you should seek treatment from a center that can take care of both your conditions. If you are unsure about which program to join, you can explore options provided by family and friends. Finally, decide whether you would like to continue with the outpatient program at the same center or would like to explore a different setting.

As we now understand more about opioids we realize that opioid epidemic is not solely about illegal drugs, it is actually about legal prescription painkiller drugs like OxyContin, Percocet and Fentanyl. Now, an everywhere problem, affecting virtually anyone and every community, opioid overdoses are considered to be the leading cause of shortened life expectancy in the U.S. According to the most recent statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), opioids, which includes prescription opioids and heroin, killed more than 56,000 people in 2016. That is 24,000 more deaths than car accidents and it is projected that in 2017 that number will surpass the previous year. In Florida, opioids were the direct cause of death of 2,538 people and contributed to an additional 1,358 deaths in 2015 (the last year for which data is available).
Tackling the overdose epidemic will require more than federal grants for our state, it will require national efforts to curb doctors' overprescribing practices, curb the manufacturing of addictive dangerous illicit drugs, lessening the stigma surrounding addiction, and beginning to treat addiction as a chronic illness. Seeing the afflicted individual as the one who each of us could be. Seeing them as the sons, the daughters, the fathers, the mothers, the sisters and the brothers who are in urgent need of treatment. A treatment that is as available as the treatments for cancer, heart disease and other debilitating illnesses.
Prescription Opioids, What Do You Need to Know.
