Okay I've searched high and low for a gifset of the full solar surfer scene to illustrate the point I want to make about it but I can't. But this set has others that illustrate my point just as well about the movie as a whole which is that this movie is so epic in scale. In many other things too but right now I want to mention scale.

This movie has such an amazing ability to give the audience a sense of how big things are at any given time. A lot of it is through long dolly shots (pushing towards or pulling away from something but primarily pushing towards), static extreme wides, or mediums from low angles like the first time the map is opened or the openingshot while the merchant ship passes. All of this gives you as a viewer an incredibly solid ability to grasp just how BIG everything in this movie is and how amazing it must feel to Jim to see it all.

The solar surfer scene sets this up so well because it shows the extent of what Jim can experience in his current life, which is still pretty darn impressive, but in contrast to the rest of the movie it feels pretty drab and enclosed, which explains why the canyon is so deep from a storytelling perspective. It's wide, but only so wide. And when we do the big dolly from Doppler's house to the spaceport, it's one unbroken shot which shows how Jim is stepping out but it's a small step and fairly routine, even if he's never been personally. It's just another piece of home as far as he's concerned. And the music reflects that. It's different to what we've heard so far, but it's mild. It's not grand or big. It's just antsy almost. When the Legacy is shown there's some sweep, but it's short and quickly fades off. Which pairs with the visuals because it's still above ground, not space. It's the ticket, not the adventure itself.

It's only after the Legacy takes off after an exciting short sequence and Jim gets on the rigging that the scale again opens wide and the music grows into this massively exciting and grand arrangement. We see the ship approach and the the camera swings to follow as it passes and we see this huge, open expanse of space to explore. We feel and see Jim's excitement grow. No canyon walls or floors anymore.

And beyond that, let's talk about the supernova/black hole scene. The shots of the star and black hole by themselves aren't terribly good at scale. But then that huge rock threatens to annihilate the Legacy and we see the laser balls hit it, as it gets close enough that it is as big as the Legacy itself. Then suddenly it gets pulled towards the newly forming black hole and we see how big that is compared to the big rock. Then we know it's real. As well as right after when the Legacy is getting pulled toward it and that huge wave explodes out of it with the tiny Legacy dwarfed in the foreground. Everything feels enormously scary and hopeless to escape. We realize just how big all of this is and what they're up against. And it makes you realize what Doppler means at the end when he says "We'll never clear the planet's explosion in time." The black hole scene is what they're up against. (I know a supernova would still be more powerful but for illustration purposes, roll with it)

Basically what I'm saying is this movie is one of the best at making an audience feel like thee characters are incredibly small in a galaxy that wouldn't give two shits if they were there or not. And I think that's how space movies should feel and hardly ever do in live action. Ad Astra gets kinda close using duration I think but the visuals don't quite match up. Treasure Planet deserves to be in the pantheon (of explorers) of greatest looking space movies, animated and otherwise, for so many reasons but this one is large among them. That's not to speak of any of it's many other positive qualities. I just love this movie so much and I wish it got the recognition and love it deserves.

Using Metaphors and Symbols to Tell Stories

Op een hoofdstuk van het boek Developing Digital short films (Creating Original Characters, Themes, and Visual Metaphors for Your Digital Short Film) heeft de schrijfster heel goed uitgelegd wat metafoor betekent en hoe kunnen we dat op verschillende manieren toepassen aan ons filmpje. ze begint met de definitie van een paas begrippen zoals: Metafoor, symbool, motieven en leidmotieven. 

Metaphor = Action/Sound. Visual or auditory representation of a separate action, experience, or idea. A character blows out (action) a candle in a bedroom to show death of a loved one.

Symbol = Object/Sound. Visual or auditory representation of another object. The candle (object) is in the shape of a ballerina to show grace and beauty.

Motifs = Collections. Collections of related metaphors or symbols used to represent a related concept. Lights or flames going on and off to show life or death states throughout a film.

Leit Motifs = Repetition. The repetition of identical metaphors or symbols to represent a greater concept. The color of the candle is gold (valuable color), along with other gold symbolic objects and activities in each scene to show the overall concept of what is valuable in a character's life.

we hebben twee verschillende metaforen. 1) Universal: dit soort metaforen en symbolen zijn al gebruikt en zijn bekend voor iedereen. 2) Personal: dit zijn de metaforen dat wij als maker voor de eerste keer gebruiken. de maker moet eerst deze symbolen presenteren aan de kijker en daarna hen een betekenis geven. 

Verder aan de hand van voorbeelden licht de schrijfster heel goed toe waar we de metaforen kunnen gebruiken in onze filmpje.

Dit filmpje is de openingshot van “Citizen Kane”. we worden naar een punt van licht getrokken als we dichter en dichter bij het raam komen van de kamer waarin Kane sterft. Als hij sterft, gaat het licht uit. Dit is een goed voorbeeld van het gebruiken van metaforisch licht.
