New work- Paintings

Hello- i've been working on a TV show based out of New Orleans for the last few months. The change has been great. Food, culture, architecture, music. This town has it all. And then some.

    Being away from home has also allowed me to get back to painting. I used to paint as a kid and i just stopped. Who knows why. So I've been painting with watercolors, acrylic, gouache, pen and ink, anything and everything. Working on ideas i have wanted to execute for a while. Back to basics.

    Since i'm also away from my shop, i'm also forced to work smaller. So- new work. Wood blocks. Small landscapes. Paint on paper. Enjoy. Cheers.

 Motivation for internship:

SMAC

SMAC has always been a favourite and desired gallery of mine. SMAC as an institute works with a very diverse range of staff as well as a wide range of differing artists. SMAC also hosts many big events with the art world, this will be a good way to gain extra experience as well as gain connections by working at such events. Here I would hope to work with the more admin and general internship tasks. Be it putting works in the system or running around last minute.

 Nel on Long

Nel is a new gallery opened near SMITH studios in town. This gallery headed by Luan Nel hosts a very fresh and small space for intimate art viewing. I am interested in this gallery as they seem to, at the moment, have a focus on queer art specifically. The gallery is young and I hope if I can gain an intern position with the gallery I can essential grow up with the gallery, potentially employment down the line. Here I would hope to even gain internship regardless of the tasks as it is a small gallery.

 Open 24 Hrs

This space has always intrigued me, having worked in it before as an artist assistant. I am interested at the office nature of the studio and office spaces in relation to the art. This space also is home to some of my favourite practicing artists. It is a unique space that takes on many forms curatorially and functionally. At Open24hrs I would hope to maybe work closely with the curator and how they gain and navigate the space.

 Norval Foundation

I enjoy the Norval foundation as it represents and homes many classical yet recently very contemporary artists. Norval has always sparked my interest and I enjoy the education aspect to the foundation. The space also like Open24hrs takes on many forms curatorially and I would be interested in knowing how the curators navigate the space in what they choose to exhibit.

 Black River Studio

This is a print studio which I am very interested in. They work closely with 50ty50ty prints which is one of my favourtie places for printmaking. I enjoy print making and would love to gain experience in assisting with this process at a large studio space.

 When all should be scheduled:

I would ideally like to do these internships on my weekends and in the term breaks. I would also however offer myself for any additional last minute help and for gallery openings to assist.

 What do I need to do to prepare for this?

Get familiar with admin software in case I will be required to perform such tasks. Research the institutions and their background so I am aware of how they run and function. This will also allow me to get familiar with the kind of art and artists that the gallery works with. Another thing I could do with regards to the institutes, specifically Black River Studio, is build up more practical skills and knowledge on some of the process that occur within the space.

 Artists

I think when it comes to artists I am still a bit unsure of what direction to take.  I am hopefully planning on meeting potential artist to intern during my other internships through working with them. To me my focus is seeking internship at an institute first before seeking artists. I am also however waiting on the Internship list to be published so I can reassure myself of artists I am thinking of interning with.
