op's one immediately made me think of pumpkin but the reverse.

pumpkin is very "its my own fault and i know it is" but in reality, its this horrible defence mechanism because if it isnt their fault... they cant fix it. its out of their control. if the pain theyre experiencing isnt because of an internal factor or their own mistakes, how can they ever make it stop?

so what their subconscious would say is "i'm telling you it's my own fault because i want to fix it so desperately and i know you wont work on it. i want it to be my fault so i can single handedly fix it and make the pain stop. plus if its your fault, then youre not perfect anymore, and i need you to be perfect so badly."

What would they say if their subconscious could speak?

I realized that regularly, my characters say things that they think they mean, but I know that subconsciously, they think the exact opposite.

I would love to see examples of this from your characters!

Tell me what they were saying, and then tell me what their subconscious would have said!

I'll start, to give an example:

In a WIP, Alba says "it's your own damn fault."

Subconsciously, what's actually going on is "if it isn't your fault, it's mine, and I can't take that, I can't take more responsibility for other people and their pain" and even deeper than that, there's "This is my fault"

Aaron looks kind of pathetic when he’s huddled on a street corner, dressed in ratty, bloodstained clothes. For a moment, Lonan considers leaving him there. Some’ll help him, he’s charismatic like that.

But it’s cold, and it’s snowing, and against their better judgement, they walk over, nudge him with the toe of their boot. Aaron flinches backwards, then looks up and looks Lo in the eye. He goes pale, paler than he was already.

“Lo,” Aaron says, relieved and terrified all at once. “Lo.”

“It’s Lonan, to you,” Lo responds, voice flat.

“It’s Lonan to everyone.”

“And who’s fault is that?” Lo snaps, before they’re able to stop themself.

“I’m sorry,” Aaron says. Lo just shrugs. They’re not going to validate another one of his apologies with a response.

“What do you want?”

Aaron lets out a breath of air, almost laughing with how relieved he is. Lo stands over him.

“You have no reason to trust me–”

“I don’t.”

“–But I need your help.” Aaron’s voice cracks on the last word. Lo looks away for a second. It’s Aaron, it’s not some bloody victim, it’s the person who got them into this mess in the first place.

“Fine,” they say, regretting it even as they agree to hurt. “But I’m calling an ambulance, and when you’re all healed up, you’re leaving me the hell alone.”

Aaron nods frantically. “Thank you.”

Lonan looks down at him. “Don’t.”
