One Piece Chapter 1126 - Initial Thoughts

Okay, this time it feels like Elbaf is beginning

We had one last caveat involving the WG and the news fallout which we will probably get a bit more of here, but Elbaf feels like it's about to enter its full and gigantic swing.

So then, let's not waste time on it shall we?

Spoilers for the Chapter, Support the Official Release too!

Yamato's latest side quest is apparently missing soba stand women

We start the chapter with the giants, explaining to Luffy while eating how they all met up

Oimo and Kashii went to Little Garden themselves, finding Dorry and Brogy fighting hand to hand because their weapons broke

They convinced them to leave the island, so they can return to Elbaf to get new weapons

Nami shows exasperation that they still intend to resume their century-old battle to the death, but Usopp quickly defends them

Unusual for Sanji to be complimenting booze, thought it was Zoro before I saw where the speech bubble went

The booze called Absinthe is strong but can cause hallucinations, so basically normal absinthe

The party rages on and Bonney has a moment to just sit with Kuma and be happy they achieved their goal

Oh we're going back to the Barto stuff!

After burning his flag, Shanks rolled up and beat Barto, reprimanding him for the risk he put his territory under

Barto apologizes, but it seems an example must be made

They offer Barto a poison, a deadly and painful poison to give to Luffy within the month, to be used as penance

Barto though is not that kinda guy, and simply takes the poison in his teeth and downs it

He refuses to involve Luffy in his mistakes, even if it was in the name of his grand fleet

Despite a dramatic goodbye to his comrades, it's of course a fake poison and Barto simply burps and hightails it out of there

Probably shouldn't have called Shanks soft though in hindsight

Before that though Papa Beck notes Shanks is grinning, which Shanks admits, appreciating Barto's loyalty to Luffy

Yasopp however has no such appreciation, a lesson had to be taught, and he shoots Barto's Going Luffy Senpai down with his rifle

I mean if Mihawk can slice ships of course Yasopp can destroy them with a shot but still, between losing the Polar Tang and Victoria Punk we need to stop destroying the boats

'It is unknown if there were survivors' - Oda c'mon man you can't kill Barto

Back at Fullalead and Pizarro is getting an earful from Blackbeard about the whole Koby escape thing

Tbf it was bad timing, seems Teach had a big plan that involved leveraging Koby, probably to keep the WG and Navy off his back while he tried to tackle the other Yonko for their Poneglyphs

Sanjuan Wolf is meanwhile trying to put Fullalead's buildings back, but his large size means he knocks over another every time he puts one back

Confirmation that Moria also escaped, meaning that Perona likely sneaked out undetected with him

Teach's small army of no-name pirates remain rallied though, he does have an army that could rival even the Cross Guild

Teach's annoyance is quelled when Aokiji notes that they captured Garp

He's alive, but Aokiji did note he was going for a killshot, old man is built different though

Teach also has Pudding on his side

Like dude, she's 16 hands to yourself

They call Lafitte who is strangely in a Navy shipping HQ

He is asked about the Revolutionaries, who confirms that their assault on the Red Port and sabotage of the bondolas is working to potentially starve the Celestial Dragons, since no food can be delivered to them

Seems like Lafitte has his own part to play though as he's told to get ready

Devon and Augur also return, demanding Pizarro pick up the ship

Caribou freaks out, like dude you've been to Wano and Egghead you've seen crazier shit than this

2 Days have passed since leaving Egghead, but something is amiss among the Straw Hats and Giants

Also the Giants' longboat is called the Great Eirik

But the Sunny is missing!

Robin wonders if it was eaten by a giant fish, which upsets Franky because that could actually be a possibility with the giant fish around them

Also kid Bonney clinging to Jinbe

Seems Luffy disappeared with the ship too

But it's Nami who is woken up, in new and naturally buxom clothing

But as she wakes she sees an unfamiliar setting

Did we just drop Nami in Legoland or something??

Well, it's not a New World arc without the crew getting split up I suppose.

Technically speaking Elbaf did start this chapter, but the primary focus seemed to be on other Yonko at the moment. It does make continuity sense for Shanks to beat Barto but sinking him did feel saddening because Barto was willing to take on all responsibility for himself by drinking the fake poison.

Blackbeard's stuff shows that he is scheming a lot, and falling upwards since losing Koby still gained him the still-alive Garp (people who thought he died did you forget what One Piece is? Garp has more to provide to the story). With Caribou coming to port too I doubt we've seen the last case of Yonko on Yonko aggression either.

But yeah, legos. Nami's outfit is kinda like her Onigashima outfit - though more furs than bondage - which is a bit disappointing, but she has a sword now! Explanation for the block house she's in are varied and wild, it's likely a devil fruit of some kind - whoever woke Nami up may be trying to entice her so it could be Prince Loki for all we know, but we also can't rule out the Absinthe either since they made a point of noting that it causes hallucinations. So far it seems all the East Blue squad and Chopper are unaccounted for, with Brook, Franky, Robin and Jinbe still here along with Bonney and Lilith, but it's still early days, we can only confirm that Luffy and Nami are classed as missing alongside the Sunny.

We will have to wait and see with this, but we are definitely starting Elbaf with curiosity.

I think if bartholomeo is a bit more good looking instead of being idk a crass bandit with rooster hair people would have shipped him with more with cavendish and they would've been semi popular at least bc clearly they have chemistry and by chemistry I mean they're always at each other's throat

This took some time but we’re finally back on track with Dressrosa!!

I started this out in my last post, but while Rebecca's design is a genuine mess I think her story is great. Learning that the toy soldier the other Straw Hats teamed up with raised her is such a sweet altough sad story for everyone involved in it, and it makes the reveal that it was Kyros all along who had been forgotten all the more soul crushing. It also pains me to see this genuinely sweet girl be forced to fight for her life as a gladiator with everyone in the audience bashing her simply because of her herritage.

As for most of the Straw Hats, when Law's plan backfires on him and Doflamingo sets his eyes onto the crew, we get one of the coolest Sanji moments of him stopping the main villain of the arc, even if for a moment. It's a well done show of both of their powers, and it's lovely to see the Straw Hats and Momo cheer Sanji on

That's all the fun for now as we get to some gruesome reveals surrounding Dressrosa and Doflamingo, starting with Momonosuke recounting the time he saw one of many moments of cruelty from the man to those he deems lesser than himself. A gladiator is supposed to fight, bleed and die for entertainment, because that's how he wants it go, that's what'll make people excited. It's probably the most terryfying moment he has to me, especially because this was often how the less strong people were treated in ancient times. This was something that used to happen. Also Momonosuke being terrified of just the memory of this sells the entire scene very well.

Things aren't getting better anytime soon as we learn the story of how exactly Doflamingo took over Dressrosa. Starting a massacre using his devil fruit, making the people detest their king and then swooping in as the hero who saves them. I love the parallels Dressrosa has to Alabasta, and I'm already prepearing a seperate post for that, but the way Doflamingo and his pirates do this so quickly is just upping their menace and that's just good set up.

To make matters worse present isn't that much better as after fighting Doflamingo for a while Law lands right next to the colosseum in Luffy's view, and then gets shot multiple times. Things are looking incredibly dire for the main cast at this point, as it seems they are back to working out in Doflamingo's favour.

Thankfully, One Piece can always keep lightheartedness in the story. Like I said I'm not the biggest fan of the Colosseum but Bartolomeo is hilarious. I'm so happy we have a character in this series who's such a superfan of Luffy and the Straw Hats. He's so fucking funny in every scene he's in and I can't help but laugh whenever I see him. I adore this dude. Not only that but we get more into Bellamy's slow redemption (if you can call it that?? I'm not quite sure), and finally, we're met with somebody who's here to help Luffy. Sabo isn't intorduced in this arc completely tho yet so I'll get back to him another time

Remember when I said everything seems to be going in Doffy's favour? Yeah. Seems. Fujitora quickly reveals himself as not much of and ally to him, as we find out he clearly knows that what's going on here is eeringly similar to what was happening in Alabasta. He hates the Seven Warlord system and he will make sure that everything happening in Dressrosa will bring everyone closer to disbanding it. Which Doflamingo, obviously, would like to avoid.

The cherry on top of all of this is when it becomes clear that it's no longer Luffy who's fighting in the colosseum, and suddenly, Doflamingo’s calculated act gets shattered as things will slowly descend from bad to worse for him, and I can't wait to talk about that

Rewatching Dressrosa and crying through half of it AGAIN 'cause what the fuck every arc in OP is so TRAGIC!!!!!!!!! And I haven't even gotten to the Law flashback yet I'm still in the middle of the arc (birdcage was just activated).

But seriously, everything that happened to literally everyone in that country was so sick and sad, Kyros' decade-long personal hell but unbreakable spirit man that shit kills me every time. Oda at least knows how to write some pretty decent fathers (too bad he refuses to do even half the work to write equally decent mothers who live!)

Usopp is such an MVP of this arc though, like he literally gets the title of God here and it's well earned, the way Doflamingo was so personally pissed off by him is hilarious and Usopp's just losing his shit the whole time 'cause boy does he know how to step on a landmine without even meaning to.

But also I really loved Franky in the first part of this arc, the way he was the one to ask Luffy for permission to essentially wage war on Doflamingo after hearing the story of the Tontatta and their history and suffering with tears in his eyes 'cause he cares so much and can't stand to see all the pain and injustice and do nothing. It sucks he then got the worst fight of the arc against Senor Pink 'cause he's awful.

Also, Sabo~ no one thinks about Ace as much as him and I love that so much :( the fact that the first move he did after eating the mera mera was Ace's Hiken gets my ass every time :'( I have so many feelings for these brothers!

Part 2 of 2! Alright, Dressrosa, let's talk about it. This will be SPOILER HEAVY so if you have not gotten this far in One Piece turn back, ye lousy land lubber!!! YOU'VE BEEN WARNED!!

This guy. This guy right fucking here. I love him, your honor. In a show that is absolutely chock full of attractive characters, Law wins Sexiest Man in the One Piece Universe for me. The man is a SURGEON, a Warlord of the Sea, and walks around shirtless with them abs because a motherfucker CAN. His backstory is, in my opinion, one of the top three most devastating in the entire series as well (Robin and Nami are the other two). When I found out his tattoos were to honor Corazon, the tears started falling, man.

I sincerely hope we get more of him in future arcs because while he did feature prominently in this one narratively, he was either getting carried around like a sack of potatoes by Luffy or getting his ass absolutely handed to him by Doflamingo. I can't wait to see him fully powered and healed up.

Now had it already been spoiled for me that Sabo would make a comeback and somehow also have the powers of the Flare-Flare fruit? Yes. Because the internet has absolutely no fucking chill. Did I expect his return to be one of the most powerful emotional beats of the entire series? I did not. Luffy's reaction to finding out Sabo was still alive was one of the most beautiful moments in over 700 episodes of OP for me. Mayumi Tanaka knocked it out of the park with the voice acting here. I sincerely hope to see Luffy and Sabo reunited in future arcs.

After waiting and waiting....and WAITING for the final duel between Luffy and Doflamingo, I have to say that Gear Fourth did not disappoint. It was entirely extra and completely in alignment with Luffy's personality. He earned the long and several tons of meat in the episodes that followed.

Final thoughts:

I mostly loved the collaseum fight. The pacing was great in the beginning and some of the newer characters, specifically Cavendish and Bartolomeo were a delight to have on screen.

The toy soldier episode broke me in twain. Gorgeous, emotional, Kyros wins for dad of the millennium.

Bellamy may be the dumbest motherfucker on this show and that's truly saying something.

Not loving how every single arc seems to sexualize and objectify young women's bodies (Rebecca is 16, y'all)

God Usopp was one of the funniest moments in all of One Piece

Zushi Zushi no Mi, god DAMN...is that potentially another world ending devil fruit like the one Whitebeard had??

The pirates swearing allegiance to Luffy gave me the CHILLS...homeboy is building a fleet without even friggin trying

The Straw Hats are a prime example of: if you believe in something strong enough, it will absolutely manifest. They're all goddamn magicians.

I just started Zou and am already in love. It's such a shift in tone and pacing from the exhausting yet important arc that was Dressrosa. On to the next binge session :)

Dressrosa Thoughts

Man finished Dressrosa in two weeks,and to think all of that happens in ONE DAY in the op universe and not getting to see my beloved perfect angel sanji for so long you BET i was crying throwing up every single episode

So the important things I've noted from this arc :

The D name : OMFG so the D in Law's name and how corazon says that the name D has been passed down ceaselessly, INHERITED through generations and Family of D are called the "sworn enemies of gods". Also these gods can be considered the celestial dragons, so the purpose of the D family people may be destruction of the world. D's contain ideas that is opposed to the gods. And also what doffy says at the end of Dressrosa how the celestial dragons will fall and how the D name's legacy is hidden in the history gap like omg shit's getting SERIOUS serious yall

Strawhat Fleet : with 7 Captain and 5600 people captain Cavendish of the Beautiful Pirates, Bartolomeo of Barto Club, Hajrudin of giant pirates, Leo of Tonta Corps, Don Sai of the Happosui army, Orlumbus of the Yontamaria fleet, and Ideo. General Dressrosa Thoughts :

The Tontattas : The tontattas are so cute innocent naive and kind people. It made me think how back in history took advantage of the innocence of native people to exploit or in slave them like the doffy did with the tontattas at the factory.

Villains : The donquixote family executives were disappointing in the fights considering that everything in dressrosa happened in one day, like even the villains of baroque works put up a better resistance. I Loved sugar though she is cute as hell and her ability was unique and very scary if you think about it. Shed a little tear or two at Señor pink's backstory ngl. Doflamingo has turned into my special little princess btw

Law and cora-san : Corazon is so silly and funny I'd love to see more of him, alas he's dead. Also his name Rosinante is very cunt idk

among the strawhats, Ofc my special angel sanji shined as usual, even if he wasnt present for most of the arc. Zoro was perfect but it'd be better if they showed zoro vs pica in a continuous sequence and not cutting the fights 200 times. Usopp also was great this arc and him knocking out sugar was funny as hell the second time too

Favourite character: I love Baby 5, manshery, Viola, Sugar, Corazon, Bartolomeo, Cavendish, Tontattas, Doflamingo, Kanjuro (his hair is cunt)

Things i hated :

Rebecca and her dad are annoying

The pacing of course. Plus none of the fights were maintained in a continuous pace. Cutting off everything one after another fuckin shit

I wouldn’t say mihawk cant connect to people in other way than violence where his relationship with Perona exists? It’s not black and white to me. He even planted a tree for her. It’s not like they were besties but they were fine. Also he seemed open to crocodile, yeah it was useful for him but it didn’t seem like he has no idea how to connect without violence?

I do think the main thing with shanks is… unfortunately ableism? If he wins against someone who lost sword arm it’s not as honourable in his eyes. It makes sense for a character like Mihawk. Shanks is not good candidate. He lost his worth.

I do think his title is worth it though. Otherwise zoro dream would be meaningless. He’s just kept on the shelf because of zoro. So he cannot get more prominent arc.

Also I think the reason he apologised to shanks is mostly honour based rather than anything emotional?

ableism is a part of it for sure but 1) SHANKS chooses to concede the rivalry, if he wanted to keep fighting mihawk with one arm he could have. I think shanks's motivations are about carefully managing the kind of attention he gets from the worldgov, now that he has to wait for luffy to become pirate king. 2) theirs a lot of powerful disabled characters in op. whitebeard comes to mind. fujitora. it would be odd of mihawk to hold this view.

mihawk is definitely a VERY GOOD swordsman. and he is seemingly the best swordsman CURRENTLY PRESENTING HIMSELF AS A SWORDSMAN. his title is meaningful and zoro will have to defeat him eventually. BUT this is one of many mysteries surrounding shanks and they will all be relevent eventually. Zoro having a slight misconception about how to acheive his ambitions does not undercut them.

IMO meeting the Extended Red Hairs (redhairs+mihawk+buggy) is not gonna go how the characters expect. Yasopp appears to be a much more cutthrouat figure than usopp based on his actions towards bartolomeo. Shanks is .. certainly keeping a lot of secrets from luffy. Im not predicting 100% dark redhair crew but its gonna be complicated. A lot of tension and a lot of reveals.

hhh tbh i want to start the op anime from the beginning again once i catch up with the manga but on the other hand, it might just be better to start from the punk hazard arc beginning again

mostly bc if i remember doffy and mr pink’s backstory in three months i want to know how i feel about them with their backstory in mind while the anime only alludes to it until the reveal.

like starting from the beginning would be a huge time eater. but… it’s better paced as well. i do think it slowed down maybe starting impel down ish??? but honestly it was felt more strongly in fishman island. and by the time i caught up and waited weekly for punk hazard, it was so glacial i couldn’t stand it

but it’ll be better if i can binge it, bc people complained about pacing in dbz but i didn’t really mind when i binged it, the exception being the namek arc and four episodes (at least!) had said goku was arriving in twenty minutes. he was not!!!

thoughts since I picked it back up this week:

-picked it back up towards the end of Arlong Park; before we started our rewatch East Blue generally wasn't my favorite and of East Blue Arlong was my least favorite but goddamn if it isn't still a banger. Still cried at the pinwheel reveal at the end and of course Nami finally asking Luffy for help 😭😭 AND AND AND again somehow forgot about Luffy's "of course I don't know how to fight with swords! I don't know anything about navigation either! I can't cook! I can't even lie! That's why I need help!" 👑 top tier moment.

-something i love about rewatching & rereading OP is, not only is the foreshadowing So Good but the amount of stuff that links back to the early arcs also makes experiencing it again sooooo enjoyable. I just thought about Bartolomeo the whole Loguetown mini-arc and, sidenote—i am really emosh about Luffy inspiring him to become a pirate 😭 accomplishing the same thing THE PIRATE KING DID except at the VERY BEGINNING OF HIS JOURNEY.... BEFORE EVEN HITTING THE GRAND LINE... even for just one person/crew is... wow okay 😭😭

-Laboon chapters made me cry twice. as is customary.
