A remake of Victor Hugo's immortal classic about the relentless pursuit of a man by the law, this latest film version of "Les Miserables" has some moments of high excitement and suspense, but, on the whole, it falls short of being the solid, marketable product needed for today's fickle boxoffices. 

The Fred Kohlmar production has all the appearances of a great motion picture, for it boasts a superb cast, authentic settings and some astute direction, but its weakness lies in Richard Murphy's screenplay which has failed to capture the tragic overtones and stark drama of Hugo's original story.  After the early scenes, which are hard hitting, forceful sequences, the film lapses into a plethora of talk and emotional ramblings from which it never wholly emerges. The result of this is a film that will probably do its best business in art houses, or nabes-hoods and first-runs catering to class audiences. It will be a fairly strong attraction for action houses, too, but family spots will find it difficult to sell. 

Director Lewis Milestone has guided his players with many adept touches, but has been unable to maintain the fast pace of opening sequences and has been hindered by the slow-moving screenplay in later scenes. The cast labors under the same difficulties, but some notable performances do emerge as Michael Rennie portrays the hero Jean Valjean in a warm, convincing manner and Robert Newton effectively personifies the law in his role of Javert. The supporting cast headed by Edmund Gwenn, Debra Paget and Cameron Mitchell is effective with no poor performances to be found.

Introductory Post

General Explanation?? (including my experience in the psychology field, as well +as what this particular blog will be about): Yoity. So I made this account because I’m uber bored first of all. But mainly because I want to talk about my dreams while also helping others understand theirs. I am somewhat, albeit very little, learned in psychology; if it’s any consolation, I’m starting a year long psychology course next week, so doing this will also be good practice for the first half of the year’s general focus: the psychology behind dreams. I have got to be honest, a lot of my dreams are going to come from the perspective of a hopeless romantic, because that is what I am :) the vast majority of my dreams are about my current love interest, whose name we’ll leave as Sam. I know I have a vast amount of dreams that I cannot ever seem to remember, save a few small details, and in those forgotten dreams, it’s not unnatural for Sam to be in it, in at least some capacity, no matter how menial. Despite this, I do know that I have quite a bit of dreams that also have nothing to do with him, and it is a rarity for me to recall them, lest they be in their entirety. Unfortunately, at this current spot I’m at in my relationship with Sam, I’m far too eager to hang onto the dreams about him, and quite frankly, don’t care too much to hang onto the ones that aren’t. That’s definitely my bad, and I’m working on it. Anywaysss- Uh, so this blog, in addition to my dreams and helping others understand theirs, will be a general psychology fact/analyzation page thingy. Also, potentially just me being disgustingly deep/sappy because yo am I obsessed with this one boy. 

Basic Information About the Blogger: Since this is an introductory post, I suppose I should mention a bit more about myself. My name is Iris and - if you couldn’t tell - the highlight of my life is Sam, my best friend, and unbeknownst to him, my crush of thirteen months. I babysit as of now, and will be starting two jobs later on in the summer. I love to read, write, think about Sam, obsess over every small detail of every small thing, collect records and VHS tapes, and sing, as well as dance and act. That’s a pretty long list haha, oops. I’m also semi-fluent in both French and ASL (including a variant of ASL, called PSE - more on that later). Besides Sam, I have four other best friends, Maria, Jenna, Audrey, and Gilbert. I don’t have as much to add to this one as I do the others, although I’m sure I’ll think of more in the future. 

High School/College and Future Plans: I’m in high school (and temporarily not as of Friday but that’s irrelevant) and I’m lovin’ living with it. I would just like to say that I finished the year with 97% scores on the finals I took to complete my courses, and as irrelevant as that is, I’m super proud lol. Anyway. As I complete high school and ready myself for college, I prepare myself for a vigorous next-level education course at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania’s Carnegie Mellon University. I don’t have the exact details worked out and I don’t really know all the logistics of degrees and such as that, but I would like to study Fine Arts, focusing specifically on Theatrical and Shakespearean acting. My ultimate plan is to live in New York City, once I complete my education, and hopefully get work there on Broadway. While I hate to imagine my life any other way, we all must have a fall-back, and mine is education. If things in the acting department don’t work out as well as I plan, I hope to double major in English and History (you can do that, right? One of my school’s counselors said yes, the other said no, so I’m not so certain.) and teach secondary education. From there, I would like to either move to Virginia, stick with my plan of living in or around New York state, or come back home, as much as I dread it here, to work at my current high school. If all else fails, Akron Uni in Ohio has like a 97 percent acceptance rate, Mississippi is the cheapest state to live in, and you don’t even need a degree to be a real estate agent! Of course, throughout this time, I do hope to keep up my education in psychology to help the people around me, as well as myself, understand the basics of our human mind.

Information About Sam Because Sam is Adorable and We All Need a Little More Sam in Our Life (but Mostly I Do Because Y’all Don’t Know Him So You Don’t Thrive Off of Him): Sam and I are the same age and we met several years ago, back in sixth grade. Woah-wee, it has been a long time with this dude. We got super close, more so than ever before a little before this time, last year, but then summer had to come and ruin everything. All through middle school and early high school, we were just casual friends, it wasn’t really until last year that we started being such close best friends.Also, Sam isn’t his real name, but for privacy purposes, that’s what his name will be on here, which makes me so sad, because I really want to share some of his nicknames, and over half of them originated from a stupid variant of his real name, and I’m actually somewhat proud of them. His most common one though is “my dude”, which is what he’s saved into my phone as. Another one is Sir Sam (but you know, not Sam-) the Valiant, because I used to call him ‘my good sir” when he was being a fake, pretentious snot-ball. I don’t remember where valiant came from, I think it was because I was trying to say “that’s violent” but my phone kept correcting it to valiant? I think that’s why, but I can’t be too sure. Whoops, that turned into a little rant, my bad. Sam and I did ASL together, and he remembers none of what he learned, but he tries anyway. He continuously screws up, and it’s adorable, but I hope he keeps it enclosed, and doesn’t try to communicate with people actually using it. He’s also a gamer, I guess? He spends a lot of time playing Rocket League, and YO, WE HAVE MATCHING CARS FOR WHEN WE PLAY DUOS TOGETHER. In fact, as soon as I finish up with this post, I think we’re going to play for a little bit. I’ve officially liked Sam for thirteen months, though subconsciously, I believe it’s been much longer. Another topic I’ll get into later. Additionally, he plays in the upper brass section of the band and is also the only pianist in the by-audition Jazz Band, and has been since Freshman year. He’s adorable and he unintentionally plays these little mind games with me. I don’t think he knows that he’s killing me. I know this is a lot, but he’s going to get a whole entire intro post of his own, not to mention every dream I have of him. I’m going to end this right here otherwise I would be going on all night.
