More or less of a follow up:
What are your favorites of “the classics” as you’ve said?
I myself have read Sherlock Holmes, Jekyll and Hyde, The Scarlett Letter, Pride and Prejudice, The Prince, A Tale of Two Cities, and the Great Gatsby. Also some Shakespeare. Sherlock is my favorite, which…should be obvious.
@best-detective-since-sherlock
((Ooc: i had to read most of those for school but they definitely weren’t the worst things I’d ever read))
I've been waiting to read Sherlock Homes, after all I've not had a copy come in second hand to my bookshop, and I've spent the monthly amount I set aside for buying more stock
Personally, I adore:
For obvious reasons, Frankenstein and Dracula.
Les Misérables (although I'm like one book in - Victor Hugo really knows how to make descriptions long winded)
I don't know if you'd call it a classic, although I suppose it is amazing enough (in my books) to be considered one, but The Perks of Being a Wallflower is a personal favorite of mine.
I also love Lolita, not for the content but for the way it's written, I love an unreliable narrator.
And I also intend on reading The Picture of Dorian Gray, Crime and Punishment, The Illiad and Metamorphosis.
But as of right now, I'm reading White Nights by Fydor Dostoevsky!

I recently saw on an ask that you asked the asker to tell you which ships you had introduced to them and made them like, so I thought I’d share. I knew some of these were ships already but others I had no idea even existed. Thormione (never knew about this). Sevmione. Fenmione (never knew about this one). Antomione (never knew about this one). You got me hooked on all of these, but, oddly enough, I almost always only like the ship when you write it. I literally will read anything you write😂
You’re the sweetest! And I adore you for following my writings so avidly and so often actually reaching out to talk to me - it’s so nice to have readers who speak to me like I’m people, rather than the type-writer churning out fics and nothing more.
To be honest, I never thought of many of these pairings as ships myself, until I met @canimallow and @freyaishtar. Freya introduced me to the Thormione ship - and she came to it via Canimal. Between the three of us, we’ve all delved into these ships I’d previously have turned my nose up at and scoffed over, imagining there could be no world where Hermione and a Death Eater, or an evil werewolf, or a grouch like Snape could ever be anything but wildly OOC and AU.
How wrong I was *shakes head self-deprecatingly* 🤷‍♀️
BUT I simply must insist that there are a number of fics besides mine, that I’m sure you’d enjoy the pairing and the story for, though I do adore you for saying you like them best by me ❤ ❤
*fetches truncated list*
Snamione:
Pet Project by Caeria is the one that hooked me into the fandom/ship in the first place. It’s a veeerrry sloooow burn, and they’re so in character and on point that I envy Caeria the ability to write so well. I’ve read this fic more than once.
Chasing the Sun by Loten is another favourite of mine. Another slow burn - as I feel most Snamione’s should be to fully capture the nuance of the characters and their relationship. Loten does a fabulous job of that.
Self Slain Gods on Strange Altars by scumblackentropy is probably the story I envy the author the most for. The grasp of the English language this writer has is beyond fault and I honestly love re-reading it over and over just to marvel at that command of language and use of vocabulary. It’s glorious. It’s also, unfortunately, abandoned, from what I can tell as it hasn’t been updated since 2013, but for where it’s written to, it’s thoroughly enjoyable and leaves enough to the imagination to let you think up your own ending, if you choose. Seriously, read it and lavish Scumblackentropy with reviews. Maybe we can lure him/her back to work on it some more if we love on it hard enough.
Antonmione
The Dark Mage’s Captive by Canimal - this was literally one of the earliest Antonmione fics, I believe. (@canimallow, correct me if I’m wrong). It’s dark, it’s gritty, it’s glorious, and without it, there would be no Death Eater Express, and I’m certain I’d never have fallen for the Antonmione ship, myself.
Slip by Nautical Paramour is another one I’m sure you’d thoroughly enjoy with a strictly Antomione pairing. I haven’t actually read this one myself, just yet, but it’s on my TBR list. I recommend it knowing that Nautical’s fics are so delicious that it will be glorious when I make the time to sit and devour it.
The Darkness in Avery Manse by Freya Ishtar is another I whole-heartedly recommend if you like horror stories with a little romance thrown in. Freya’s got a gift for horror and ghost stories and though this is only at chapter one, right now, I have every faith it will be glorious when it’s complete.
Fenmione
Untamed by Clementine Mack is 100% an intriguing and beguiling tale that encapsulates the wilder side of lycanthropy within the HP-verse. I need to catch up on the fic, myself, having devoured the early chapters while she was still just starting out on this one and since not made time for HP based reading.
Silent Shadow by Canimal - this one is currently on Hiatus while Melody takes a writing break and focuses on other projects, but it’s entrancing to say the least. I’m avidly following it and awaiting new chapters because I just know it’s going to wreck me before the end.
Creatures in Cages by Freya Ishtar - I’m hooked on this one. Like... Hooookkkeedd. I have so many questions, and I think I’ve proposed to Gerilyn on more than one occasion in my gushing reviews.
Thormione
Uncut Thread by Mary Royale is one of my all time favourite Thorminoe fics, though it’s just a one-shot. There is something delicious about them when Mary writes them.
Parolee and His Princess by Canimal - THIS was literally the FIRST ever Thorfinn/Hermione story. EVER! Like, literally, before Melody came along and used that brilliant brain of hers to write this pairing, they did not exist. Without her, there would be no Thormione. She breathed life into the 1 dimensional character Thorfinn was in canon and turned him into the character so many of us adore. We bow down at the alter erected in Canimal’s honour. She is our Thormione goddess and we adore her.
The Golden Mage’s Captive by Frey Ishtar - the second author to ever write the pairing. Yeah, my friends are badasses and I fucking love them for it. They built this ship with their bare hands, y’all. Seriously, if you haven’t read the fics on this list, you’ve got to read them.
And I’m fangirling here for my own besties, but seriously, without them, the Antonmione and Thormione ships, in particular, would probably never have gotten off the ground. I know my recommendations are heavy with love for them, and that my opinion is biased, but all of these fics need love, y’all. Lavish them in reviews. Gasp! Cry! Scream! Lay it all out there as you experience the journey of each one and tell the author how it makes you feel. Please! Love them as I love them! #alwaysreview

How about prompt 2 from list 5 for Pero Tovar? 🥺 I think he would do this for his wife
Restless Nights, Early Mornings
Pairing: Pero Tovar x F!Reader Warnings: Fluff. We only know soft!Pero here. Probably a bit OOC.
Word Count: 763
Author’s Note: A thing that I am discovering about myself as a writer is that I struggle without dialogue and reader is asleep for this whole thing so... This was a challenge. It didn't come out exactly the way I wanted it, but I am sending it out into the void anyway! I hope you enjoy! Prompt: “Tucking the sheets around them when they stir during the night" requested by @agirllovespancakes
Summary: Pero notices you've had a restless night. Taglist Form - Masterlist
Tumblr media
Letting out a deep sigh, Pero propped himself up on one elbow, turning to inspect your sleeping figure. Worry lines formed between his eyebrows as you stirred once more. Pero had always been a light sleeper. It had served him well during his time as a mercenary, but had become unnecessary since settling down in a modest cottage on the edge of a sleepy little village and marrying the local blacksmith’s daughter. The life he led now was one of relative comfort, with regular meals, a warm home with a soft bed, and most importantly, you. The rest of the world may have seen him as a dangerous ex-mercenary, but you were different. You brought out a side of him that no one else would ever know– a soft, thoughtful man beneath his brutish, armor-clad exterior. The newfound comfort of his living situation didn’t stop him from jerking awake at the slightest noise in the night, ready to leap into action to defend you from whatever dared to disturbed his sleep. Most nights, this ability appeased his protective side and gave him peace of mind. Tonight, however, it was nothing more than a source of annoyance.
He would need to be up in just a few moments to begin his daily chores, but he had hardly gotten a wink of sleep with all of your tossing and turning in the night. If you had been anyone but his precious wife, Pero probably would have considered smothering you in your sleep just to get a decent night’s rest. Normally you were a more than pleasant bed partner, but rest seemed to evade you on this night. It appeared now that you had finally exhausted yourself into slumber, just before dawn. Guilt settled into Pero’s stomach as he watched the steady rise and fall of your chest. It seemed a shame to wake you when you had fought so hard to find sleep, even if there was work to be done. Winter would be here soon enough, and it was busy work preparing your little farm for the months to come. Pero frowned, thinking over the list of tasks the two of you had come up with for the day. The morning was dedicated to tending to the crops, but this afternoon you had planned a trip into the village to trade for a few necessities. He remembered you’d been excited by the prospect of the visit. You were such a wonderful wife to him, so much more than anything he’d ever imagined he would have in his life, and you had worked so hard these past couple of weeks. Clearly, the stress of preparing for the oncoming winter was getting to you... He could take care of your chores this morning, couldn’t he? Allow you to get a few precious hours of sleep and wake up refreshed for your trip into the village?
Yes, he decided. You deserved a good lie-in, just this once. Pero untangled himself from the quilts, careful not to wake you as he crawled out of bed and began lacing up his trousers and pulling on his boots. As if on instinct, you rolled over onto your side, snuggling into his now vacant pillow. Pero finished dressing and returned to your side, quietly hovering over you as he straightened out the bed sheet that had fallen to your waist with all of your tossing and turning in the night, pulling the bedding back to its original position. He carefully tucked the sheets around you, just the way his Mama had done for him as a child. The action had always made him feel secure, and he hoped it would do the same for you. You let out a contented sigh as he reached out to brush some stray hair from your face, nuzzling into his touch. Despite whatever insomnia had plagued you earlier, it relieved Pero to see you finally drift into a peaceful slumber. “Rest well, mi alma,” He ordered in a whisper, leaning down to press his lips to your forehead before heading out of your little cottage to begin the day’s work. Perhaps Pero would tease you about sleeping late in the morning or grump at you for keeping him up all night, but when you awoke a few hours from now to the sun streaming in through the window, safely tucked into your warm bed, you would know that it was the handiwork of your thoughtful, loving husband, whether he wanted to share that side of himself with the rest of the world or not.

Walls
Tumblr media
Pairing: Joel Miller x GN!Reader
Warnings: I made this angsty as hell and I don’t know why. Vague allusions to spiciness, unrequited love (maybe?), emotionally stunted Joel
Word Count: 1,340
Author’s Note: This is set pre-TLOU. Joel is kind of a dick here. I blame the fact that I’ve been reading Dirt on Ao3 and am just a tiny bit disillusioned with him at the moment. This probably isn’t what you expected, but I promise I have some Joel fluff coming up soon and I hope you enjoy it anyway, anon!
Prompt: Friends with benefits and both people catching feelings.
Summary: You were never supposed to fall in love with a broken man.
Taglist Form - Masterlist
“You really think this is the best time to have this conversation?” Joel demanded, a hint of irritation in his voice.
It wasn’t. You knew that. It hadn’t stopped the words from tumbling out of your mouth. We need to talk.
You’d known Joel for about a year now, having met him and Tess shortly after finding your way into the Boston quarantine zone. It hadn’t taken long for you to find yourself in Joel’s bed, content to pass your nights in blissful ignorance of the outside world.
You and Joel were… something. He was a complicated man with no concrete role in your life, and it was killing you. He was obviously more than a friend, but describing him as your boyfriend was strictly, absolutely out of the question. You suspected that he’d walk straight out the gates of the QZ, never to be seen again, if he ever caught wind of you uttering that word and his name in the same sentence. A few months ago, you wouldn’t have blamed him.
You knew you were being unfair to him by asking for more. It was a complete violation of the unspoken rules of your undefined relationship, but things had changed. You needed answers.
“I meant what I said, Joel. I need to know what we’re doing here.”
“What’s that ‘sposed to mean?”
“Exactly what it sounds like,” You shrugged. “If you ever wanted to tell me how you feel, it’s now or never.”
“You’re giving me an ultimatum?” He questioned, crossing his arms over his broad chest. It was a dangerous move on your part. Joel wasn’t a man who reacted well to being backed into a corner, but you were so sure…
“I heard that one of Robert’s guys has a thing for you. Jacob or Jason or… whatever his name is. This have somethin’ to do with that?” Joel wondered, shifting the attention away from him. He knew you better than to believe you would let this go, but it didn’t hurt to try.
You almost roll your eyes at the question. It was so obvious to everyone else that you were head over heels for him. The idea that you would end things with Joel for someone else was downright laughable to you now.
“No,” You shook your head. “This isn’t about that. I’m talking about us.”
Joel’s jaw tensed at your use of the word.
“There ain’t an us, remember?” He said, a mocking dreaminess in his tone as he echoed the word back to you. “That ain’t the arrangement we made.”
The arrangement in question was supposed to be a way to scratch an itch, plain and simple. Nothing more than a way to blow off some steam and distract yourselves from the struggles that came along with the end of the world as you knew it. At first, you’d thought that both of you had seen too much and lost too many people to go and do something as stupid as falling in love, but here you were, in over your head and so sure that there could be something more here, if only Joel would let you in.
“Well, maybe I want to renegotiate,” You challenged. “I know you care a lot more than you let on. Maybe you can hide it from the rest of the world, but I know you better than that, Joel.”
You thought you did, at least. For all of the walls Joel had built around himself, they had seemed less insurmountable as the months had passed. As if each passing night together helped knock them down, brick by brick, giving you the glimpse of the man he used to be. The one you’d fallen in love with.
You thought back to the night when he bandaged your sprained wrist after a scuffle with Bill on a smuggling run. His calloused fingers were so delicate on your skin as he wrapped it in a makeshift brace, and his eyes flickered to yours every so often to check that you were alright. And then there were all of the times that rations ran particularly sparse, as they usually did, and he offered to share his food, claiming that he wasn’t hungry and insisting that you finish it up for him. Joel was a caregiver by nature, even if he believed that life was behind him now.
Most often, though, you saw that softer side of him in the quiet of his tiny, run-down apartment, with the moonlight streaming in through the window and Joel’s sleepy smile as you exchanged stories about your lives from before. With his arms around you as you slept, safe and warm, it was easy to forget that it wasn’t supposed to mean anything. In moments like those, you had been so sure that deep down, Joel loved you.
You didn’t see that man now, standing in the dim lights of his dingy kitchen. The Joel that stood before you was harsh, made wary by a lifetime of pain and loss. The more you said, the higher his walls went up. They were towering over you now, just like they had been the day you’d met, as if the past few months had never happened.
“You knew what this was when we started this,” He grumbled, shaking his head. You could see that he knew where this was headed. You were treading on thin ice here, but you couldn’t stop the words that left your mouth.
“I know. I knew. I mean, I thought I did, but… then I fell in love with you, Joel. And I just thought…” I thought you loved me too, you wanted to say. “Is the idea of someone caring about you really so horrible?”

The First Kiss
Pairing: Marcus Pike x F!Reader
Warnings: Fluff, smooches (a bit spicier than I normally write, but still very tame compared to every other kiss in the history of fanfic), brief mention of marriage and kids
Word Count: 1,147
Author’s Note: I’ve returned from the dead. This is technically a sequel to The Best Man, but I don’t think you have to read the original to follow the story. Also maybe technically my own little therapy session, as always. Side note- why are my characters always hanging out in the alley behind a bar?
Summary: A last first kiss.
Taglist Form - Masterlist
Tumblr media
Marcus guides you through the crowd, hand hovering at the small of your back as you cut towards the door. You reach back to grab his hand and weave your fingers through his. It’s easy to play it off as not wanting to lose him in the crowd, but you know it means more than either of you are prepared to discuss on what is supposed to be a casual night out with friends.
You reach the door and the cool air outside is refreshing as you step out into the alley. The smell of smoke still lingers in the air from the last patrons of the bar who’d slipped out for a cigarette.
Marcus holds the door open for the person re-entering the bar, trailing a few steps behind you as you move to lean against the wall.
“Peace and quiet at last,” He remarks. “God, I could hardly hear myself think in there. Must be a game on or something.”
“Must be,” You shrug, shivering slightly from the breeze in the air.
“Cold?”
You nod, and he immediately begins shrugging out of his leather jacket. He knows that if he were to ask, you’d tell him to keep it, that you’d be fine, that if you needed a jacket you should have brought one of your own, so he doesn’t bother. He drapes it over your shoulders himself rather than handing it to you, enveloping you in it before you have time to argue. The warm leather shields you against the chilly autumn air, and your protest dies on your tongue as you relax into its comfort.
“Since when did you start smoking?” You ask suddenly, remembering the excuse he’d made to Greg and Melissa for your sudden departure.
“What?” Marcus looks surprised by the question, his eyebrows raising just a hair and his head tilting to the side like a confused puppy. You gesture vaguely to your surroundings.
“You said you needed a smoke break.”
“Oh, I don’t,” Marcus shakes his head, “But I thought Greg was going to fracture my shin with how hard he was kicking me under the table. I got the impression that they wanted a little alone time.”
“What do you mean-” You begin, moving to peek through the small window in the door. You stop yourself when you recognize the booth you’d been sitting at with your friends. They’re very much intertwined in a tangle of lips and tongues and heavy petting, and you’re suddenly grateful for Marcus’s newfound ‘smoking habit’.
“Newlyweds,” Marcus says with a roll of his eyes, but the knowing amusement in his voice is clear.
“Why are we the ones hiding out in the dark alley?” You question. “I mean, they’re like… horny teenagers. Just constantly…” You wave your hand towards the inside of the bar. “I mean, people eat here. This is a food service establishment.”
“This is a bar.”
“They sell curly fries.”
Marcus shrugs, stepping closer to you. “Oh, come on. You know that feeling when you just can’t keep your hands off someone. Haven’t you ever been in love?”
He’s almost teasing as he says it, as if you aren’t practically drunk on the scent of cologne and laundry soap and Marcus that clings to his jacket. As if you aren’t staring into his eyes like you can see straight into his soul and standing so close you can feel nervous energy that radiates off of the two of you in waves.
It’s a silly game the two of you play, this dancing around the obvious. In all of your previous relationships, this stage felt like a race against the clock. Ticking off milestones like they were a part of a checklist that would somehow culminate in this June wedding, white picket fence, two-point-five kids thing that was supposed to complete you.
But time moves differently with Marcus. For the first time in your life, you don’t feel like you have to sprint towards the finish line. It’s almost like you’re dragging it out. Reveling in the feeling of security that comes with falling in love this way, with the right person. You can take your time with Marcus, because you have it. You have him, completely. Marcus Pike is yours, and you’re his. It’s yet another unspoken understanding between the two of you.
Like how you both know that when you nod your head to confirm that yes, you’ve been in love, you’re thinking in the present tense.
You’d be lying through your teeth if you said you hadn’t thought about what happens next. It seemed like more of a matter of when, than if.
An inevitability.

Everyday Heroes
Tumblr media
Pairing: Marcus Moreno x F!Reader
Warnings: A few curse words, an explosion, implied injury, depressed reader, minor character death, grief, and a bit of pining
Word Count: 3,364
Author’s Note: This got out of hand and apparently I only know how to write hopeless pining. Do we agree that Marcus gives off Clark Kent vibes or am I alone in this?
Summary: The three times you discovered Marcus Moreno was a hero.
Taglist Form - Masterlist
When you’d left the house that morning, the heels you wore had seemed like a great idea.
You were headed in for your first day at your new job and you wanted to make a good impression by wearing what you perceived to be your most professional outfit. You’d made it to the coffee shop down the street from your apartment with minimal difficulty, though you were certain to have blisters on your feet by the end of the day. Thankfully, your receptionist position meant that you would spend the majority of your day more or less chained to the front desk, answering phones, taking messages, scheduling appointments, and greeting visitors.
You didn’t know much about Vil-Tech. You’d googled them before your first interview, of course- you weren’t a total idiot and you’d never dare show up unprepared, especially when you needed this job so badly- but your search had yielded only a few results. Most of what you’d found had been articles from the newspaper. The researchers at the lab had, apparently, recently had some success in clean energy technology. Protons, neutrons, particle accelerators, electromagnetic fields… You knew nothing about it, really, but it sounded impressive. And clean energy had to be good, right? When they’d hired you, it hadn’t seemed like a big deal that you knew next to nothing about the company itself. They were only looking for a receptionist, after all, not a scientist. If they’d wanted you to know exactly what was going on in the floors above you, you were sure that they would have let you know.
With your coffee in hand, you made your way towards the Vil-Tech building. All in all, it seemed like the universe was on your side this morning. You’d woken up early enough to make yourself look decent. Your favorite barista had made your coffee just the way you liked it, and it even looked like you would be early for work.
And then it all seemed to happen in slow motion.
The upper half of your body was already moving forward, even as the heel of your shoe remained firmly wedged in the sidewalk crack. You felt the coffee sloshing around in the stainless steel travel mug in your hands, threatening to douse your crisp white blouse in the steaming beverage. You blindly threw your hand out in front of you, bracing yourself to hit the concrete and thinking to yourself that this was just one of those days when this might as well happen.
But the harsh impact you’d prepared yourself for never came.
It had taken you a moment to process that someone had caught you. Someone with impeccable reflexes, it seemed, as not only had they rescued you from taking a humiliating fall in the middle of a busy sidewalk, but they also managed to save your coffee without spilling a drop. To say that you were impressed by the feat was an understatement.
But when you looked up at your savior, you were damn near speechless.
“Are you okay?” He asked, his dark eyes finding yours from beneath his black-framed glasses. And, other than the approximately thirty-seven heart attacks you’d had in the span of 2.5 seconds only moments before, you found yourself nodding in confirmation.
“I’m fine. I… Thank you,” You breathed out, a warm, tingly feeling spreading out from your chest and right down to your toes. Gods, he had the most beautiful eyes you’d ever seen. He appeared to be somewhere in his mid-forties, and wore a leather jacket with his slacks and tie, a combination you’d never quite seen before, but decided suited him quite well.
“Are you sure? You look a little dizzy,” He noted. His arm was still around your waist, and you were grateful for it, because you didn’t quite trust the integrity of your knees at the moment.
After a few moments, which had exceeded the socially acceptable amount of time to moon over a stranger while clutching their remarkably toned biceps for dear life by a long-shot, your brain finally seemed to catch up to the rest of you, and promptly flooded your thoughts with embarrassment. You released your death-grip on his arms immediately, trying to maintain your dignity as you yanked your heel from the concrete crevice in a distinctly unladylike manor. All the while, the handsome stranger remained right there, dutifully holding your coffee and trying his best to hide the amusement in his eyes with a polite smile.
Taking a deep breath and smoothing out your outfit, you nodded at him once again. “I’m fine,” You said in what you hoped was your most composed voice. He promptly handed you your coffee, and you swore you felt electricity when his fingers brushed against yours.
“Glad to hear it,” He remarked, “That would have been a nasty fall.”
“Nice save, Clark,” You joked, attempting your most charming smile. Were you flirting? Could you even consider this flirting?
“Clark?” He repeated, his eyebrows raised in curiosity.
“You know, Clark Kent… with the glasses and... lightning-fast reflexes… saving me from an incredibly embarrassing moment?” You explained weakly. It wasn’t as if you’d never spoken to an attractive man before, but it seemed that the universe was decidedly not on your side this morning after all.
“Superman?” Another smile found its way to his face. He seemed flattered by your comment. “My daughter loves those comics.” At the mention of his daughter, your eyes quickly darted down to his left hand. There was no wedding ring there, but it was clear that there had been one there in the past.
“Well, your daughter has excellent taste. And we could all use a few more heroes in our lives, right?” You sighed wistfully, before adding, “Thank you, by the way.”
“It was no big deal,” He assured you. “I’m always happy to help a pretty lady in need.”
You laughed quietly at the last part, finding the cheesiness of it adorable. You weren’t quite sure why you were still lingering on the street corner, except that you couldn’t quite bring yourself to walk away just yet. He seemed equally as reluctant to part from you, both of you grinning shyly at one another as you soaked in the meet-cute moment. Right up until his eyes fell to the ID badge clipped to your bag, that is.
“Is that a Vil-Tech badge?”

The Best Man
Tumblr media
Pairing: Marcus Pike x F!Reader
Warnings: Angst, fluff, a few curse words
Word Count: 2,560
Author’s Note: A fun part about getting older is that all of my friends are married or engaged now, and sometimes weddings bring up some insecurities. A more than a bit of venting going on here. This is my first time writing for the love of my life Marcus Pike and I’m very nervous/excited.
Summary: When your best friend asks you to be the maid of honor at her wedding, you’re convinced that you’ll never find your own happy ending- until you meet a certain groomsman.
Taglist Form - Masterlist
You weren’t proud of the feelings of dread that washed over you as you sat in the parking lot of the wedding venue. You’d been sitting in your car for just a little longer than socially acceptable, given that the rest of the bridal party had likely already gathered inside. You just needed to make it through the next two days, and then you could go back to your apartment, wrap yourself in a blanket, and wallow in your feelings.
You thought you’d be better at ignoring the green-eyed monster that was currently threatening to ruin what was supposed to be a happy occasion.
You’d dutifully sat through dress fittings, gave thoughtful opinions on flower arrangements and centerpieces and invitations, and meticulously planned the bridal shower and bachelorette party. It was your job as the maid of honor to make sure that everything went off without a hitch on your best friend’s special day.
You were happy for her- so happy for her. You’d never seen her like this, and you knew that she and Greg were going to have the perfect lives together. A fairytale wedding, a beautiful home, a loving family with two-point-five kids and a golden retriever in the backyard. A cliche to be sure, but you couldn’t deny the pang of jealousy that Melissa had found her perfect match while you were still decidedly and hopelessly single. You buried those feelings down deep, enduring it all with a smile.
It would happen for you eventually.
Probably.
Well, you could hope, right?
When you finally made your way inside, Melissa had already worked herself into a panic. The best man, Marcus, was nowhere to be found.
Mellissa had told you a little about Greg’s best man. You knew that he worked for the FBI, that he and Greg had been in a band together in his younger days, and that he was flying in from Washington D.C. for the wedding. His flight was supposed to arrive an hour ago, and then he would take a cab from the airport to the venue.
Clearly, that plan had derailed at some point.
“Greg, we only have the rehearsal space for another twenty minutes-” Melissa reminded him impatiently.
“He’ll be here, Mel. I swear, the one time he’s late for anything…” Greg sighed, shaking his head. He pulled his phone from his pocket, presumably dialing the best man’s number again before holding the phone to his ear. The silence seemed to drag on forever as Mellissa glared daggers at her husband-to-be. “Damn it, Marcus, turn your phone on...”
You tried to deescalate the situation, placing a calming hand on Melissa’s shoulder and quietly reminding her to breathe. With patience wearing thin all around, the last thing you needed was for Bridezilla to make an appearance today.
“Why don’t we just run through the ceremony without him, and he can follow my lead tomorrow. All he really has to do is stand there and hand you the rings, right? Does that sound okay?” You looked back and forth between the couple hopefully, and they nodded in agreement.
“Good. Happy thoughts, you two. It’s going to be the most magical day of your lives, I promise.”

It was a busy bee month for me!
While I took a semi-break from blogging- which means I limited myself to only 1 or 2 posts a week, instead of my usual 3 or 4- I took that time to plan out future blog posts (June, specifically) and read a lot.
#PanelAThon happened, which was the absolute best time. I smashed my TBR, in my opinion. Comic-heavy read-a-thons seem to suit me best, so I know how to sort my TBR for future read-a-thons now!
I also started up a brand new Bookstagram which I’m very proud of, even if my sister is helping me with most of the pictures due to her better camera quality. It’s like a project for us both, really: I provide the books and the good cat content, and she helps me position the shots and take pretty pictures!
Towards the end of the month I went to a gig that my best friend’s boyfriend was doing with his band, which was a great time. I also moved my things out of my Uni house! Next year, I’m living in a flat by myself, which is very expensive but will hopefully be worth it.
In June, I’ll be predominantly reading LGBT+ books, which I talked about more in my Pride Month TBR post! I can’t guarantee I’ll finish everything, though, as my twentieth birthday is on the 18th June and I’ll be spending the last two weeks of the month basically with only friends and family for the entire time, which I’m really looking forward to.
Also, last off: all my posts this month are twenty themed. So it’s all lists of twenty things, catered around my birthday and also my general life. I really hope you’ll check the posts out as they come out, I spent a lot of time making the lists and formatting everything for maximum good content.
READING WRAP UP
This Is Not A Test by Courtney Summers– this was a very human look at the way teenagers would cope in the apocalypse, extremely dark and very upsetting, from the point of view of a suicidal girl. It did let me down in that I wasn’t fully immersed in the story, but it definitely picked up towards the end.
NENENE by Shizuko Totono– while I really wanted to love this, the massive age gap between the two characters really ruined it for me. It tries to make up for the age gap by saying the characters will wait till the main girl is 20, but that honestly makes me quite sick thinking that the only reason they haven’t done anything is because the rest of society are telling them it’s nasty, not because they have any understanding of the massive imbalance of power in that relationship.
The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas by Ursula K. Le Guin– I’ll be honest, I read this because of BTS’s Spring Day music video, but I’m glad I did. It’s a very dark look into a utopian-esque society that only thrives based on the suffering of a child. I really love the distant narrative voice in this piece.
It Only Happens In the Movies by Holly Bourne– this is one of the most disappointing reads of all time for me. I did a long review of this on my Goodreads breaking down issues I had with the characters and the narrative that really ruined the whole experience. I know I don’t drop star ratings anymore, but this was a definite 1 star.
The Case For Jamie by Brittany Cavallaro– This had probably the weakest beginning in the series, with it not picking up until the 160 or so page mark as it relied a lot on info-dumping about Charlotte’s life and didn’t really have much happen. However, the last 150 made up for the weak start, and I really ended up enjoying this and I cannot wait for the final book!
The Unbreakable Code by Jennifer Chambliss Bertman– I really didn’t enjoy this and I am sad. I’m pretty sure it’s a ‘me’ thing, for the narrative, but I will say that there’s a lot of telling instead of showing, which really does lessen my enjoyment as we don’t see characters have any major realisations bar a few.
By Night #7-#10 by John Allison– this series has flown by! There’s only two issues left now, and I’ll be very sad to see it go, but I definitely think it’s coming to its end.
Labyrinth Coronation #12 by Simon Spurrier– I AM DISTRAUGHT that this series has ended. So so upset. I’m not completely content with this conclusion because a character does something that seems very OOC for them, after their development throughout the series, but I don’t really know how I could have been 100% satisfied with a beloved series coming to a close.
Why Photographers Commit Suicide by Mary McCray– this is a poetry collection I’ve had for literal years, a lot based on space and Mars. I was disappointed with this one and didn’t really connect with it overall or gleam anything valuable from it, although there were a few decent poems in there.
Small Spaces by Katherine Arden– I love this! Very atmospheric and creepy middle grade horror about some kids, terrifying scarecrows, and a long history of mysterious deaths and disappearances.
Nuclear Winter Volume 1 by Caroline Breault– Nuclear Winter is a fun story about a Montreal full of mutants that is in its ninth Winter after a power plant exploded. I love Flavie, the main character, and the art style is perfect for a slice-of-life adventure full of mutants, partying and bagels!
The Silent Companions by Laura Purcell– God, I’m still scared of this book. It’s basically like the terror of the weeping angels, combined with commentary on female hysteria, and is one of the most Gothic settings I’ve ever read. It’s honestly a masterpiece.
Haikyuu!! Volumes 1-  by Haruichi Furudate– This is a GOD TIER sports manga, and probably my favourite, volleyball is just great. I absolutely adore these characters and their dynamics, the competitions, the illustrations– it’s all amazing. I have watched the first season of the anime, which means I was already familiar with most of these volumes, but I honestly do prefer the manga over the anime and highly recommend it.
The Walking Dead Volume 2 by Robert Kirkman– OK writing although it’s nothing special, but the art style change was very evident and I highly dislike it. Has a terrible case  of ‘tiny font’ that really ruins any reading experience for my short sighted ass, so I don’t know if I’ll carry on. I just don’t think I carry about the characters enough.
The Loneliest Girl in the Universe by Lauren James– this completely blindsided me. It goes from a sci-fi romance to a sci-fi horror survival story, and I think it’s great. Definitely my favourite Lauren James, she truly is the queen of UKYA sci-fi stories. Apparently her next one is a soft-apocalypse novel, which, YES.
The Unexpected Everything by Morgan Matson– really disliked this. I think I’ve grown out of the picture perfect beautiful YA characters. Clark never leaves the house and never exercises but apparently has perfect abs and the most chiselled of jaws. It’s just unrealistic, fellas! It doesn’t appeal to me at all. Also suffers from a case of ‘long-book-itis’ and is at least 200 pages of unneeded scenes too long, and is very predictable.
Lore Olympus by Rachel Smithe– this is a very pretty adaptation of the abduction of Persephone myth. The art gets better the further you get in, and I really do love the personalities of these Gods and other miscellaneous mythological creatures personified (EXCEPT FOR APOLLO APOLLO SUCKS). Content warning for rape and victim blaming, as well as a character being roofied (unrelated to the rape, though).
Uzumaki by Junji Ito– very strong first two thirds, but a very dissatisfying conclusion. However it is suitably creepy and has stunning art, and Kirie and Shuichi have a great relationship that I loved seeing develop throughout the story.
Welcome To Wanderland #1-3 by Jackie Ball– such a lovely series! It’s about fantasy realms and theme parks, magic and rebel princesses, and is very great. Unfortunately #4 won’t be out for a while as the illustrator had to leave for health reasons, but I’m hoping the new illustrator will be able to give this series a good end when it eventually comes out!
Go For It, Nakamura! by Syundei– a very cute manga about gay sixteen year old Nakamura and his pursuit of Hirose, a boy in his class. While this doesn’t end with a romance, it’s still a soft read seeing these characters become friends, and I can only hope another volume will one day be released.
Coady and the Creepies by Liz Prince– not one of my favourites, but it was enjoyable to read. This follows triplets on the road with their punk rock band collecting pins from all the biggest punk venues in the country, and also has ghosts. Probably my favourite part was commentary on punk rock being inclusive and how so many dudebros have lost sight that the movement was built going against a a discriminatory regime, not upholding it!
I Want To Eat Your Pancreas by Yoru Sumino– this manga literally knocked me TF out for absolutely no reason at all other than wanting to purposefully break my heart. The last 100 pages made this one of my favourite manga of all time just for how slyly it managed to make me care about these characters.
When I Arrived At the Castle by Emily Carroll– an erotic, Gothic graphic novel from a literal master of her craft. I love everything Carroll puts out, although I don’t think this ranks above Through the Woods. It’s very unnerving and has wonderful art, although I’m still just a tad confused by it.
Nuclear Winter Volume 2 by Caroline Berault– I’m not putting this with volume 1 just because I didn’t like this one as much. It moved way too quickly and I wasn’t as invested in the storyline. However, I do enjoy seeing older-younger sister dynamics, and Flavie and her younger sister Elsie really reminded me of how I am with my younger sister.
Teen Dog by Jake Lawrence– an incredible, quirky coming-of-age comic with anthropomorphic animals, best friends, chess, prom, and a dope pug called Thug Pug! I really loved this, it’s one of my new favourite all-time reads.
Honey So Sweet Volume 1 by Amu Megura– this was OK; not my favourite shoujo manga, and I’m not a big fan of this kind of art style, but it was fun to read and I like the softness of the main boy!
Junji Ito’s Cat Diary: Yon & Mu by Junji Ito– SO TRUE TO LIVING WITH CATS. Cannot express how much I could relate to this, I giggled so much. Ito and his wife do have a little bit at the back talking about Yon’s passing, however, so prepare yourself for that, I ended up crying.
Fullmetal Alchemist Volume 9 by Hiromu Arakawa– I don’t want to talk about it. I’m heartbroken this series is over. I loved this ending, but I’m heartbroken. I cried so many tears of joy, especially at the ending it gives Hohenheim.
Smooth Criminals Volume 1 by Kiwi Smith– another OK read! It wasn’t really stand out in comparison to a lot of the other comics I picked up this month, but it’s a quick read, and it has sapphic spies and hackers, if that’s your jam!
Turf Wars Volume 2 and 3 by Michael Dante DiMartino– Finally picked these two volumes up after procrastinating for months! It’s a really cheesy and much deserved conclusion to this graphic novel series, and I’m very much looking forward to the next series coming out. I’m keeping my hopes out for Wu to return, I miss him.
Bungo Stray Dogs Volume 1 by Kafka Asagiri– Very funny detective agency manga where all the characters are inspired by famous literary authors, each possessing powers that aids them investigations. It quickly gets into the main arc and villains. My main issue is that it has that creepy manga trope of having that sibling relationship that’s a bit too close, just for laughs, and it’s something I absolutely despise, so it kind of ruined how much I was loving it for an issue.
My Hero Academia Volume 16 by Kohei Horikoshi– it’s the start of the Overhaul arc, properly! Some decent character development in here, especially for Tamaki, Kirishima and Fatgum, who are the ultimate team, to be honest.
The Avant-Guards #1 to #5 by Carly Usdin– Carly Usdin genuinely writes some of the best diverse comic series currently. I love this as a sports comic, although I wish there were more issues to develop the characters and their relationships gradually as it does come across as quite rushed at points!
No.6 Volume 1 and 2 by Atsuko Asano– I really love the anime, so I figured it was about time to read the manga! It’s really fast moving, with great characters and a wonderful breakdown of the Utopia/Dystopia dynamic, and I really enjoy it. Shion is genuinely one of the best characters in manga in my opinion.
Faithless #1 by Brian Azzarello– A very dark new series about a woman who experiments in magic and accidentally summons something very dark. It’s strange and unsettling, and I really loved this first issue!
Slam Volume 1 by Pamela Ribon– This wasn’t that great, to be honest. It’s told in a very third person voice that stopped me from ever connecting with the characters, and although I love the roller derby parts and enjoyed the art, it’s not really a standout comic.
And finally, I read the Save Me Webtoon! Pardon my French, but this was so fucking good, and it’s really reminding me why I love both friendship-focused stories and time loop narratives. I think the art is great and I love the story, but I would not recommend this if you’re unfamiliar with the BTS cinematic universe and basic theories. Not all theories- I only knew basics so I could form an opinion on timelines, conclusions, etc.- but just the basics on the time loop theory. I talk more about all this later on in this post, though!
And my June TBR Jar pick is…. HUNGER MAKES ME A MODERN GIRL by Carrie Brownstein!
ESSAYS/ARTICLES
I read this article analysing BTS’s Spring Day, one of my favourite music videos of all time, and it really hit me hard. BTS in general have stunning music videos, so I highly recommend them for anyone who wants interesting visuals and/or a brand new narrative to invest themselves in with the BTS ‘cinematic’ universe.
TV SHOWS/MOVIES/VIDEOS
BTS’s Spring Day music video. Are any of you surprised?
THIS AMAZING CYPHER PT.3 ANIMATION. There are so many little easter eggs! Fans are amazing.
Another BTS video: their Go Go dance practice video is amazing. They all dress up as Snow White and the Seven Dwarves.
Literally my whole month was spent watching BTS videos. Their whole cinematic universe with their music videos? INCREDIBLE. It starts with the uncut version of I Need U (content warnings for most of the videos discussing suicide, abuse and has a lot of violence), and I realised later on once I’d watched them that the Japanese versions of some of the songs are part of the series! You can find playlists and lists online to help you navigate which videos to watch first. I look at Spring Day as being the conclusion to the cinematic universe with Jin finally saving them all by helping them save themselves, as dramatic as it all sounds.
MUSIC I’VE ENJOYED
I basically spent all month listening to BTS. Particular favourites include Silver Spoon/Baepsae, Answer: Love Myself, Mikrokosmos, Cypher Pt.4, and GoGo!
Nightmare by Halsey is top notch, I got really into Halsey’s hopeless fountain kingdom again this month literally a day before Nightmare came out, so I recommend her! Obviously Boy With Luv is great too, I decided to get into BTS just because the Boy With Luv MV was so great and now look at me!
