Hi, Peppertaemint! I was wondering if you wanted to talk more in depth about OnlyOneOf's Begin and Be Free music videos. It would be interesting to read your perspective on how both music videos follow a storyline, the stylistic means through which they portray the beginning of a potential relationship, but most importantly, the impact they must have on current K-Pop and its audience.

Hi Anon. Sorry it's taken me so long to answer this one. I wanted to wait until I could do it justice.

OnlyOneOf has released five music videos in the "be" series: YooJung's Begin, KB's Be Free, JunJi's Be Mine, Rie's Because, and Mill's Beat. Nine, the sixth member of OOO, has dropped the teaser for the final video in the "be" series, Bey0nd.

These videos tell stories of LGBT+ romance. The first two, Begin and Be Free, follow a couple's hookup and more than allude to the physical side of that, while Be Mine and Because take things further with a couple's ups and downs, including attraction and desire. Beat focuses on school bullying, with a student crushing on a young man who then battles the bullies with him. The teaser for Bey0nd carries on from the last, showing the new couple playing music and celebrating together.

These works are undoubtedly LGBT+, not only in the narrative portrayal but in the messages posted with the videos themselves. Begin states this clearly with the beautiful passage posted under the MV on YouTube:

Among the countless lovers in the world, there are also lovers that couldn’t be blessed. For whatever reasons. Religious reasons, things like parents’ disapproval. I dedicate this song to all those lovers that couldn’t be blessed.

Each set of MVs focuses on a couple (the members "chop and change" to create different couples) and a stage in their relationship. Flirting, getting acquainted, intimacy, conflict, reunion, etc. Begin and Be Free focus on desire and a sense of the erotic in romance. I particularly like the fish tank scene that is reminiscent of the intoxicating party scene in Baz Lurhmann's Romeo+Juliet. Be Mine and Because are bolder, if less stylistically interesting, as they depict kisses and other physical encounters between their couple, including an underwater kiss. If we compare these to Holland's MVs, which were marked as "adult only" because of same-sex romantic content, OOO's videos are less raw and gritty and much more wholesome, constituting a kind of K-drama-esque homo-romance.

If I squint, I'm reminded of Jungkook and Jimin in the Dynamite Holiday Remix video, acting as the "Christmas couple" away from the other members. But there's one glaring difference here—homo-romance is not subtext for OnlyOneOf. It's the whole of the text and the message of the work.

When OOO released homoerotic/romantic work previously, many cried "queerbaiting" despite many of us pointing out how these videos weren't queerbaiting—they were LGBT+ stories being told with elements of eroticism and romance. What I notice now is how much warmer the response is. I think this has something to do with the theme being consistent so people understand it's not a stunt for views, but I also think it's because the erotic elements are lessened. Sadly, people still have strong, negative reactions to eroticism, especially if it's LGBT+. The history of fan service is partly a reason for this, though I still think fan service needs to be revisited and recontextualized (that's an opinion for a different day).

Nonetheless, I think these videos show how the young SK generation's attitude toward LGBT+ contrasts with older generations' attitudes. Polls show there is quite a difference in support for LGBT+ rights between generations, and I think the fact we're seeing more openly positive LGBT+ content coming out in SK is a product of this.

It will be interesting to watch their trajectory over the coming years. K-pop is less popular in SK right now than it used to be, judging by comments from the general public, and the music industry in general is seeing the "silo-ing" of artists, meaning it's much harder for artists to become known and followed by many because styles and genres have become niche by default. Audiences have almost infinite choices in terms of who they follow and listen to, so much like we see on social media, fandoms are becoming their own complete subcultures where values and ideas are reinforced instead of challenged. And I mention this to say that although I'm sure OOO are having a positive impact on LGBT+ youth and artists in SK, the East, and beyond, I'm not sure just how wide the impact is given that we can now easily ignore what is outside of our sphere, culturally speaking.

Countering this, I'm reminded how important music shows like Inkigayo and Mnet are because they put this content in the living rooms of a diverse set of people. And that is one way older generations can be reached.

Thinking About Thame Po and LYKN

So. I just found out that MARS, the idol group in Thame Po is played by GMMTV's real-life group LYKN. I don't even know how I managed to miss this the entire goddamn time, but that's besides the point. While this may raise some concerns about Thame Po being treated more as marketing material for the group and ending up being poorly developed, I've been thinking about how this might pan out in terms of the group members careers, in particular William. I wonder if WilliamEst is going to continue as a branded couple, or if this is going to be more of a one-off thing tailored specifically for the show. Also, I know that acting in a bl isn't going to have even close to the same implications as it does in the kpop world, but it's still an impactful project these idols are taking up really early in their careers (it's almost guaranteed to earn them more attention, that's for sure).

This concept is quite similar to OnlyOneOf's Bump Up Business, which they only did after having already established themselves as a group and having developed their ties to bl with their bl singles project. Now, as a group under gmmtv, LYKN obviously has no need for the latter, but I will be interested to see how strong their ties with the bl industry remain after this show ends, again, particularly William. For example, while OnlyOneOf will forever be known as That BL Group (exactly as their marketing team would hope, I suppose), they're also able to successfully do music outside of that concept, in part I think, because they were already an established group before. Obviously, we're playing with a lot of different variables here, but considering that GMMTV is almost definitely banking on Thame Po to bring in more support for LYKN, it will definitely be interesting to see how the groups future endeavors pan out seeing as that support is irrevocably tied to the bl industry and its fanbase. It's also worth noting that their most successful single to date is the one that features Pond and Joong on it, so I'd be completely unsurprised to see that GMMTV plans to bring in support for these guys through the bl fandom

Who is bothering me right now?” He mutters out, seeming to be disappointed at the interruption of his time with you. “Go check! Maybe Jisung is burning down the dorm or something just as important.” You lightheartedly spoke, not sharing any negativity towards the unexpected; Mark is with you, it is the least you can ask for. Pulling away, you notice the pout replacing the smile Mark held.

As an attempt to comfort him, you pat him lightly on the chest and Mark gives you an apologetic smile before taking out his phone to answer. Watching your boyfriend place the phone on his ear and speaking into the phone, you could hear his friends on the other line; oh, they are always bothering your poor boyfriend, you can’t help but pity him.

Though, it is quite amusing to see the easygoing Mark become a little tense and strict with them however. Losing interest in eavesdropping into the conversation once realizing it wasn’t serious as the two of you expected, you glanced at the snow underneath your feet; an idea sprouting above your head, a mischievous smirk growing on your face at your plan.

Carefully walking away from Mark to not act too suspicious, you lean down and begin to collect snow to mold into a ball. Your palms and fingers become numb once you pick up ice, but it was worth it - well, you hope it is. Sometimes, these types of moments are bound to have sacrifices, especially for the cost of Mark’s reactions.

Seeing his dark colored jacket collapse into the white snow, you scurry over with worry expressing from your features. “Are you okay?!” You hurriedly say, ready to pick him up from the cold floor; however, such plan had completely fallen apart when you somehow slipped and lost balance. Toppling on top of him, you hear Mark groan underneath you once you collide with him and you panic.

“I am sorry!” You begin to scramble, lifting yourself up but feel a grip on your waist. Slowly you look down to meet Mark’s eyes, snow contrasting the blonde locks of hair overcoming his forehead; unbelievably so, Mark held a very serious expression. Locked in a very intimate position, you have forgotten about the cold surrounding the two of you.

His eyes observe your face, longingly staring at your lips before flickering up to your eyes - “Are you alright?” He asks the question solely meant for him considering his situation, but he seems more worried about your state than his own. Nodding slowly, you realize the proximity between your faces; warm breath reaching you, his laundry detergent feeling more overwhelming than a simple hug.

Reality struck your boyfriend, his eyes slightly widening and he slowly sits up with you moving and taking a seat in his lap. “I am so sorry! I didn’t mean to make things uncomfortable,” He says quickly and his hands are disappearing from your waist. Flustered, he folds his hands behind his back and tries his best to lean away from you to avoid any discomfort for your sake.

You slowly shook your head, “No, no…You are okay…Right?” You try to change the topic. Seeing Mark avoiding your eyes, he quietly nods; you aren’t sure whether he is blushing or it was the cold snow cursing his pale skin from falling. Maybe it is both. Without thinking to get up, you stuff a hand in the pocket of your jacket to take hold of the hotpack.

Thankfully, it remains warm and you are moving it towards Mark’s lips. Instinctively, he turns to you from the warm touch, relief evident in his eyes. You smile at him, “You aren’t hurt right?”

Mark didn’t say a word. Eyes observing the beauty he dreams of every night and looking forward to during the day, he is somehow growing a desire to have your warmth instead. Lifting up a hand and wrapping his fingers from your wrist in a gentle grasp, he moves the hotpack away from his face and slowly leans forward; as he begins to move, you are feeling your breath stop.

Softly, his lips place against your own for a short moment. His warm breath caressing your face and you remained frozen until he pulled away, his eyes fluttering open to meet sight of your gaping face; regret overtakes his expression, Mark shyly looking down - “I am so sorry! I didn’t mean to kiss you…I should have asked…Sorry–”

Tenderly, you place your hands on his face, the lingering warmth of your lips growing a sudden desire you’ve never felt before. You slowly turn him to face you, “I want to kiss you more.” You admit and his lips twitch up into a smile. Before he could reply, you are capturing his lips with your own to prevent any words leaving his lips.

Head tilting to deepen the kiss, you melt into the very warmth of your boyfriend. You feel his hands placed on your waist once again, squeezing you lightly as the two of you kiss amongst the white snow surrounding the two of you.

All ice cursing is melted away, the warmth of Mark Lee’s is enough to have you at bliss.

Alex seems like a chill guy you’d want to be friends with and who loves his girlfriend and for some reason that’s the same vibe the tvxq boys give me. Omg I’m so nervous!! The OOO snapshoot tickets go on sale for my city in just a few minutes and I’m literally shaking.
