7 Unexpected Ways Instagram Has Changed the World
In the past two years, Instagram has gone from strength to strength, amassing a billion active users and growing at the fastest rate of any of the major social platforms.
And with users now spending 53 minutes per day, on average, in the photo-sharing app, its impact on our day to day lives has been significant – and I don’t just mean the amount of people who refuse to take a bite of their meal until they’ve taken the perfect #brunchgoals picture.
Instagram has created sub-genres, businesses and careers, and has disrupted whole industries. In this post, we’ll look at seven ways that Instagram has influenced modern behaviors, which is worth considering in your marketing and outreach process.
1. It’s diversified beauty standards
Instagram has received its fair share of criticism when it comes to affecting young people’s mental health. Some blame the amount of filtered, edited images, which present an unrealistic expectation of beauty – but there is also a flip side to this. In giving consumers such an accessible platform, a more diverse vision of beauty can also be shared.
People are no longer reliant on traditional media broadcasting a narrow definition of beauty. From users sharing their unfiltered pimples, stretch marks and scars, to the rise in plus size, trans and disabled influencers, efforts are being made via Instagram to break beauty taboos.
These diverse representations are growing on the platform, and building significant audience traction, causing brands to take note.
2. It’s changed the way we travel
Instagram is a treasure trove for travel inspiration. Within the palm of our hand, we can see pictures of the most idyllic spots from around the world, and travel behaviors are changing as a result.
Whether it’s using the app to research the best places to go before we travel, or choosing a particular spot because we want to recreate a picture perfect post, ‘Insta-tourism’ is having an impact. According to research conducted by Facebook, 70% of travel enthusiasts (those using travel-related hashtags) use the platform to share their travel plans, while 67% use Instagram to find inspiration for new journeys.
Those trends are also being reflected in Insta-popular locations. In 2016, China opened the world’s highest and longest glass bottom bridge. It had to be closed just thirteen days later after thousands of tourists flocked to get their shot for the ‘gram.
The rise in Instagram-influenced travel has caused those in the tourism sector to re-think their strategies. Tourism Australia’s official Instagram account (@australia) currently has more than 3.2m followers thanks to its stunning mix of commissioned photography, UGC and witty captions.
Nick Henderson, Tourism Australia’s global manager of social media, recently told CNN:
“We’ve seen that Instagram can play a role in people’s decision-making process on where to travel. Places like Rottnest Island in Western Australia and the lavender farms in Tasmania have seen significant growth in visitation, partly as a result of their ‘Instagramability'”.
3. It’s turned flat lays into a phenomenon
Still-life shots have always been popular, but Instagram has made the flat lay trend go mainstream.
A search of the #flatlay hashtag brings up more than five million results on the platform, and we’ve all become familiar with these artfully arranged, overhead product shots.
There’s something about the simple and visually pleasing flat lay which really lends itself to an Instagram grid, its simplicity standing out in a sea of selfies. Now dedicated accounts like @flatlay and @flatlays share their favorites with thousands of flat lay-loving followers, and countless how-to articles provide tips on how to achieve the perfect shot.
4. It’s sparked new food trends
In London’s hip borough of Hackney, you’ll find Palm Vaults, a cafe which has fully grasped the benefit of providing maximum Instagram opportunity. Potted plants hang over marble tables, full of pastel-colored lattes and flower-topped granola. Its an influencer’s paradise and in attracting them, the business receives plenty of free advertising.
Other venues have followed suit, and while there are no official stats, I’d hazard a guess that the usage of neon signs, flower walls and pink plates in restaurants has risen considerably.
In general, the rule tends to be that the things that stand out succeed. Avocado on toast no longer makes the cut. Think Matcha lattes, charcoal activated croissants, acai bowls and rainbow bagels.
5. It’s created entire social brands
As brands have jumped on board the Instagram marketing bandwagon, there have been some standout success stories.
Some of the savviest early adopters have been able to create brands entirely on Instagram. Watch brand Daniel Wellington is a perfect example – they’ve used the platform to advertise their product, bypassing traditional advertising altogether. Its strategy of using its ad budget to gift watches to influencers has resulted in a flood of posts, and that hype has translated to sales, helping it become Europe’s fastest growing company between 2013 and 2015.
Frank Body is another example – the ground coffee body scrub maker has made strategic use of influencers in order to boost its presence, creating a buzz that turned into a $20 million global beauty brand.
As co-founder Jess Hatzis told Forbes:
“We really saw an opportunity to launch a great product through social media, with smaller barriers to entry than ever before. We wouldn’t have the business we have today had it not been for our ability to leverage platforms like Instagram and Facebook.”
6. It’s mobilized Activism
With an emphasis on all things visual, and direct access to millions, Instagram has also helped bring worthy causes to the fore.
Imagery is incredibly powerful, and many activists now use Instagram as a storytelling device to spread their message far and wide, inspiring others to get involved. It also gives influential individuals direct access to their followers to deliver undiluted messages of support – like Justin Beiber’s Insta announcement of his support for the #blacklivesmatter movement.
Through this awareness building, causes are finding that they’re being discovered by new audiences. The #postboxselfie campaign was credited for mobilizing marriage equality voters in Australia last year. In sharing their voting moment, it was a fun and encouraging way to connect with a young audience who, despite supporting marriage equality, were thought to be reluctant to vote.
7. It’s created a new breed of influencer
Bloggers were already popular in 2010, but Instagram gave them a platform to distribute short and sweet updates. With one image and a caption, they were able to make bite-size content which could be published more regularly for more frequent conversations with their followers.
Some used this to complement their blog content, some switched to Instagram completely, while others found social fame on Insta alone. The app has undoubtedly propelled the influencer movement, and turned some personalities into social celebrities.
Beauty influencer Huda Katta topped this year’s Instagram rich list. She has 27.7m followers and her own beauty line, ‘Huda Beauty’, which gives fans the opportunity to buy into her ‘Insta-perfect’ look with products like the #FauxFilter Foundation.
When fashion influencer Chiara Ferragni married earlier this year it was in a lavish ceremony, two haute couture Dior gowns, with a follow-up feature in Vogue. Even less established are now able to earn a living through brand collaborations on Instagram.
The next phase? Virtual influencers like Shudu Gram and Miquela Sousa, created digitally, who live on Instagram alone.
As you can see, there’s a range of ways in which Instagram is influencing culture, and changing the way we communicate, discover and get involved in different elements. From a marketing perspective, it pays to have an understanding of these developments in order to better contextualize not only your Instagram strategy, but how Instagram’s growth is changing consumption habits more broadly also.

Cardiff 2-3 Arsenal: Gunners win through Alexandre Lacazette
Cardiff 2-3 Arsenal: Gunners win through Alexandre Lacazette
Cardiff 2-3 Arsenal: Gunners win through Alexandre Lacazette
Shkodran Mustafi headed home to score Arsenal’s first
Arsenal secured their first away win of the season as they edged a pulsating Premier League encounter with Cardiff City.
Alexandre Lacazette’s powerful late winner proved the difference in a contest full of attacking quality and defensive fragility.
The Gunners led twice, through Shkodran Mustafi’s header and a curling effort from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, before Lacazette crashed home the winner on 81 minutes.
Victor Camarasa’s first Cardiff goal, on the stroke of half-time, and Danny Ward’s header had seemed as though they would earn Neil Warnock’s side a point as they scored their first goals of the league campaign.
Ozil returns as Emery picks two strikers
Arsenal manager Unai Emery this week denied reports that he had fallen out with midfielder Mesut Ozil after the former Germany international withdrew from the squad that beat West Ham last weekend, citing illness.
There have been suggestions Ozil’s style does not fit with a manager who demands high-energy pressing from his forwards, but Ozil started in an attacking-looking line-up that paired Aubameyang with France striker Lacazette up top.
Ozil and former Cardiff favourite Aaron Ramsey were given licence to roam in behind, and for large periods in the first half, Arsenal’s shape and roving full-backs troubled Cardiff.
Emery’s side took the lead on 11 minutes with a goal that will have left Warnock incredulous as Mustafi headed home, unopposed, from Granit Xhaka’s corner.
But for a wonderful save from Neil Etheridge, who denied Nacho Monreal from point-blank range, the Gunners might have given Cardiff a mountain to climb inside 20 minutes.
However, as always seems to be the way on the road – Arsenal came into this game having lost eight of their past nine away games – the Gunners allowed the hosts a way back in by failing to either extend their advantage or keeping their opponents out.
The first period especially was a game full of attacking intent and flimsy defensive resistance on both sides and Lacazette underlined the danger he posed when he rattled the inside of the post on 33 minutes as Arsenal streamed forward.
Emery’s men almost replicated their opening goal when Mustafi got a firm header to Xhaka’s corner, but this time Etheridge repelled the danger.
Lacazette and Aubameyang struggled to find a rapport at times, but were perfectly in tune just past the hour mark when they combined beautifully to allow Aubameyang to curl home from just outside the area, his 150th goal in one of Europe’s top five leagues.
Emery happy with ‘improving’ Gunners
Cardiff’s quest for a goal is finally fruitful
While Arsenal always catch the eye in attack, the Bluebirds had failed to score in their first three fixtures back in the top flight, extending their run to 1,597 days without a Premier League goal since Peter Whittingham’s penalty on 19 April 2014 against Stoke City.
They probably feared more of the same when they spurned a golden opportunity inside 10 minutes, when midfielder Harry Arter shot over the crossbar despite being presented the ball by Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech. Arter also shot over in first-half stoppage time as Cardiff looked a little bereft of ideas in attack.
Ward was within an inch or so of turning home Bobby Dercordova-Reid’s cross, while the former Bristol City forward also acrobatically volleyed over after Ward failed to find a convincing touch following Junior Hoilett’s cross.
It seemed it was going to be yet another frustrating half for Cardiff, but Arsenal allowed more shots on target to the opposition in their first three games (24) than any other Premier League side and on the stroke of half-time, they let the hosts in.
The Gunners failed to deal with Joe Bennett’s cross and summer signing Camarasa stole in between Mustafi and Monreal, twisting away from the latter and rifling the ball past Cech into the roof of the net.
The Bluebirds barely created even a half-chance in the second period with Arsenal again seizing the advantage, but they found a goal from nothing with 20 minutes remaining when Sean Morrison flicked on a free-kick and Ward crashed home a header off the inside of the post.
It set up a grandstand finish where both sides pushed to win the match, with Reid bursting clear and firing straight at Cech, before Lacazette’s stunning finish ensured all three points would head back to north London when he escaped Sol Bamba’s slack marking and thundered the ball in at the near post.
Morrison’s late header over the bar with Cech completely stranded almost provided even further drama, but Arsenal held on.
‘It was a cracking game’ – Warnock pleased despite defeat
Man of the match – Alexandre Lacazette
This was a game for the attackers and Lacazette provided the moments of quality that mattered. The France striker scored the winner, assisted the second and might have scored in the first half when his shot hit the inside of the post.
Gunners improve on the road – the stats
Arsenal have collected six points in their past three away Premier League games (W2 D0 L1), as many as in their previous 11 away games combined (W1 D3 L7).
Cardiff are winless in six matches in all competitions (D3 L3), their worst run under Warnock and worst since a run of eight in January and February 2015.
Since his Premier League debut in February, only Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah (15) has scored more Premier League goals than Aubameyang (11).
Camarasa’s goal for Cardiff ended a run of 415 minutes without scoring for the Bluebirds in league competition.
All six of Mustafi’s Premier League goals have been scored via set-pieces (three from corners, three from free-kicks), with five of them headed goals.
Aubameyang’s strike from outside the box ended his personal run of 76 consecutive goals from inside the box in club football – his last from outside the box before today was against Spurs for Borussia Dortmund in the Europa League in March 2016.
Lacazette has been directly involved in seven goals in his past five Premier League starts (5 goals, 2 assists).
Ward made his first Premier League start – 3,305 days after his first appearance in the competition for Bolton Wanderers in August 2009.
‘We are evolving’ – what they said
Arsenal head coach Unai Emery speaking to Sky Sports: “I enjoyed the win. In the 90 minutes it was difficult. I think we controlled the match not every time but 70% on the pitch with possession, positioning attacking movement. It’s important to continue working.
“One goal for Lacazette, one for Aubameyang, but I think every other player worked well with commitment we want. We are happy for that and we are evolving.”
Cardiff boss Neil Warnock speaking to Sky Sports: “It’s tough but I really enjoyed the game, it was a great game to watch from the sideline and I thought we were always in it.
“Top teams take their chances, there’s a lot to work on but we didn’t want to park the bus – we wanted the fans to enjoy it and I felt we gave them a good game here. We could’ve got a result really.”
What’s next
After the international break, Arsenal travel to St James’ Park to face Newcastle. and Cardiff face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Both games are on Saturday, 15 September (15:00 BST).

Ramblings – Stanley Cup Hangover, Draft Stuff, Carlson, ROR & OEL
There’s always a concern about a team suffering from a Stanley Cup hangover. The wear and tear on the body from an extended season. The adrenal fatigue that comes with the insane high of winning a championship. And of course, the brutality that the liver is faced with in the days and weeks that follow the cup ceremony. It sure looks like Ovi is handling it better than Backstrom thus far.
{source}<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Coming home with some new friends. <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/ALLCAPS?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#ALLCAPS</a> <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/StanleyCup?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#StanleyCup</a> <a href="https://t.co/y06xj5CjEr">pic.twitter.com/y06xj5CjEr</a></p>— Washington Capitals (@Capitals) <a href="https://twitter.com/Capitals/status/1005131293904916480?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">June 8, 2018</a></blockquote><script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>{/source}
{source}<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Hey DC. We are coming in hot!<a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/ifthereisonecitythatdiservesthis?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#ifthereisonecitythatdiservesthis</a>? <a href="https://t.co/G6QzX5h1VU">pic.twitter.com/G6QzX5h1VU</a></p>— Nicklas Backstrom (@backstrom19) <a href="https://twitter.com/backstrom19/status/1005142843986468864?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">June 8, 2018</a></blockquote><script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>{/source}
But in all seriousness, after spending 13 years together climbing to the top of the mountain, there’s a legitimate chance that Ovechkin and Backstrom step off the gas a bit to start next season. Especially Backstrom as he’ll have some healing to do this offseason that will take away from training.
Watch for that lull and take advantage if you can. If they start icy, it’ll be a prime opportunity to get one or both at a discounted price.

Last week I spoke about Oliver Ekman-Larsson’s pending free agency in 2019. At the time, it was reported that the Coyotes have an eight-year deal on the table for 8.25 million. John Chayka does not appear to be a man who minces words or actions. There’s a reason the organization is putting that worthy of an offer on the table 13 months before their star blueliner is eligible to test the waters. And that’s to know what his intentions are.
OEL can take the offer under advisement for the summer and not allow the team to glean much information from it. Or, he can thank them and politely and decline saying he wishes to focus on next season and leave the contractual part of the game for next summer. If that’s the case, I have a sinking suspicion that Arizona will dangle OEL at the draft in Dallas.
Imagine the draft floor chatter that will be flying about if both OEL and Erik Karlsson are being legitimately shopped.
Fortunately for me, this will be my first live draft as a member of the media. And I can’t wait!

Continuing with the draft-eligible players, it appears that Brady Tkachuk’s 2018-19 season is very much an unknown.
{source}<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Top <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/NHLDraft?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#NHLDraft</a> Prospect Brady Tkachuk to <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/OHL?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#OHL</a> London rumour certainly has legs. <br><br>I'm told that former Boston U Coach David Quinn's departure for the NHL is making Brady think twice.<br><br>Will come down to whether or not he's <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/NHL?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#NHL</a> ready or not – if not, look for him to be in London.</p>— OHLInsiders(.com) (@OHLinsiders) <a href="https://twitter.com/OHLinsiders/status/1004693436371529729?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">June 7, 2018</a></blockquote>
<script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>{/source}
This comes on the heels of his announcement to return to Boston University for a sophomore campaign a few weeks ago. However, it appears David Quinn grabbing the Rangers’ gig has changed some things.
Many had assumed that Tkachuk would be one of the more NHL-ready prospects and thus hold some more clout in fantasy drafts this fall. Being drafted out of the NCAA will facilitate a multitude of options. Tkachuk will be eligible to play in the NCAA, OHL, AHL or NHL. If he ends up in London, lets hope he just takes number seven to save fans from going out and getting a new jersey as brother, Matthew rocked that uni during his monster 2015-16 season with the Knights.
However, this new revelation re-opens the door for an NHL debut next fall. That should play a role in his fantasy draft slot.
**
Is there another NHL team that benefits more from the increasing salary cap than the Washington Capitals? With a reported 5-7 million being tacked onto the roof this offseason, that will likely facilitate them retaining John Carlson.
{source}<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">John Carlson records his 55th career playoff point, setting <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/ALLCAPS?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#ALLCAPS</a> record for playoff points by a defenceman</p>— Sportsnet Stats (@SNstats) <a href="https://twitter.com/SNstats/status/1004900838475616256?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">June 8, 2018</a></blockquote>
<script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>{/source}
The powerful right-shot blueliner re-established himself as a cornerstone fantasy asset this past season. Leading all blueliners in points is fantastic, but replicating it is always the hard part. However, he attained his lofty numbers on the back of some sustainable metrics.
Carlson shot the puck a great deal more this season – besting his previous career-high by 29. Yet his conversion rate remained consistent with his career norms. The other main factor to his 68-point season was the 33 power play points – another slam dunk career-high. He saw over a minute more per night on the man-advantage than 2016-17 and cleary made good use of the additional time.
While 2017-18 very well could end up as his peak season, there's little reason to believe the 28-year-old won't be flirting with the top of the pile for defenseman scoring in immediate future. There is no one sniffing around his spot on the top powerplay unit, and his surrouding talent will remain quite high.
**
Positions aside, who do you like?
{source}<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Points Only Keeper League Pickum!</p>— /Cam Robinson/ (@CrazyJoeDavola3) <a href="https://twitter.com/CrazyJoeDavola3/status/1004770102225428480?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">June 7, 2018</a></blockquote>

**
Last week I touched on the precarious position that Erik Haula is holding as the Golden Knights’ second line centre. With Cody Glass and Nick Suzuki sniffing around NHL jobs as early as next fall, his time as a primary offensive piece is limited.
Over the course of the off-season, I’ll continue to highlight some other players whose positions are in danger and thus are ripe for a fall from fantasy relevance.
This week, we’ll talk about Ryan O’Reilly.
For the past three seasons, the Sabres’ pivot has been playing between a 60 and 70-point pace. He’s been remarkably consistent since 2011-12 – never failing to play at least at a 55-point pace. He’s offered strong value in points’ leagues and even more so if you find yourself a setup that counts faceoffs.
The 27-year-old has done his damage on the scoresheet while plying away on bad teams. Just when things are appearing to turn the corner in Buffalo with the addition of Rasmus Dahlin, his position seems as insecure as ever.

The Sabres have allowed the whispers to hit the wind that they’d be open to moving O’Reilly and his five remaining years at 7.5 million. The team had a glimpse of their future down the middle, and a cost-controlled Casey Mittelstadt lining up behind Jack Eichel sure seems like a nice place to be.
Mitteltstadt is a dynamic centre who controls the game with elite speed and skill. He’s more of a playmaker compared to Eichel and that will bode well to diversify the waves of attack during even-strength. It will also allow the two to play to their strengths on the top power-play unit.
It also means that ROR is likely destined to be a very expensive third line centre in the not-so-distant future if he stays in Buffalo.
The fantasy implications of an O’Reilly deal are hard to ascertain until we A) See it happen, and B) Find out where he lands. Does his skill set (and contract size) garner him a first line gig on a bottom-feeding club? Or does he slide in as a 2/3 centre on a contender? The latter option affords him a greater quality of talent around him, but fewer opportunities to play in high-danger situations.
If you own him in a keeper league, this is a fluid situation that demands attention.

How Messi's 100 European goals were scored
Barcelona's Lionel Messi has emulated Cristiano Ronaldo in reaching 100 goals in UEFA club competition; UEFA.com dissects the Argentinian marvel's body of work.
Lionel Messi has scored 100 goals in European competition in 122 games. After watching three matches from the bench, he made his competition debut in a 2-0 defeat at Shakhtar Donetsk on 7 December 2004 – aged 17.
How they were scored Right foot – 16 Left foot – 80 (including five free-kicks and nine penalties) Header – 4
Slow start After four goalless outings – and nearly a year after his competition debut – Messi scored his first UEFA goal in a 5-0 thrashing of Panathinaikos on 2 November 2005. It remains the longest wait for a goal in his European career, though he has gone four games without scoring in three subsequent spells: October 2006–March 2007, March–September 2008 and February–April 2015.
Goal progression 1–20 – 42 games 21–40 – 21 41–60 – 18 61–80 – 23 81–100 – 18
Hat-trick king Messi shares with Cristiano Ronaldo the European record for hat-tricks: seven in total, including one four-goal haul (v Arsenal, 6 April 2010) and five in a 7-0 triumph over Leverkusen (7 March 2012) – the latter tally a first for the UEFA Champions League (group stage to final). Last season he broke further new ground by hitting hat-tricks in successive appearances, against Celtic and Manchester City.
Peak periods Those two trebles heralded a run of five straight games in which he claimed at least one UEFA Champions League goal – ten goals in all from September–December 2016. He had previously registered in a career-best five consecutive European matches from September 2013 to March 2014 (undeterred by missing several games through injury) and September to December 2014. His most prolific period was between November 2011 and March 2012, when he squeezed ten goals into just four matches.
Most goals against (100) 9 – Arsenal 8 – AC Milan, Celtic 7 – Bayer Leverkusen 6 – Ajax, Manchester City 4 – Bayern München , Panathinaikos, Paris Saint-Germain, Spartak Moskva 3 – APOEL, København, Lyon, Viktoria Plzeň, Shakhtar Donetsk, Stuttgart 2 – Basel, BATE Borisov, Dynamo Kyiv, Juventus, Manchester United, Real Madrid, Roma, Sevilla 1 – Borussia Mönchengladbach, Olympiacos, Porto, Rangers, Sporting CP, Werder Bremen
Home and away The Camp Nou has been Messi's happiest hunting ground in Europe, with 55 of his strikes coming on home soil. He has also netted five times at neutral venues in UEFA Champions League finals and UEFA Super Cup games, plus 40 goals on the road.
High-water mark Messi has been at his very best in the earliest stages of this competiton; his 60 in the group stage and 21 in the round of 16 are both tournament records. He bagged 14 goals in 11 games in his best UEFA Champions League campaign of 2011/12 – and managed an even more impressive rate in 2016/17 with 11 in nine outings.
Goals by round Group stage – 60 Round of 16 – 21 Quarter-finals – 10 Semi-finals – 4 Finals – 5
Winning mentality Messi scoring generally means game over for Barcelona's European opponents – they have won almost 84% of the matches in which he has struck. He has scored in a losing cause in only three European fixtures.
When Messi scores his team have ... Won 52 Drawn 7 Lost 3
