Who she knows has her back implicitly and will do what she would do. Someone who shoulders her burden not because he has too, but because he wants too. He's the one person she can't fool and the one person she can truly be herself around because he understands her in ways that no one else can.

Searching the depths of hell of tumblr for specific scenes and unfortunately straying so far from home meant I happened across a bangel that was mad because they saw a spuffy call Angel and Buffy’s kiss in the finale fan service and instead of giving ANY actual explanation or justification for how it wasn’t they instead chose to go with “they called the kiss fan service like all of spuffy wasn’t fan service”

Calling a relationship that developed over SIX SEASONS and into the comics that radically impacts the story as well as both Buffy and Spike fan service I’m literally on the FLOOR 😹😹😹

I mean yeah sure I’ll give you Spike’s popularity in part kept him alive which is obviously the only way for their relationship to have happened but the term “fan service” specifically speaks to adding things in for NO OTHER REASON but to make certain fans happy. Also what joss put spike and buffy through individually as well as collectively????? FAN PUNISHMENT ACTUALLY LITERALLY THE OPPOSITE OF FAN SERVICE. He literally was like fine you can keep spike but I’m putting EVERYONE through hell 🙃 (which also he did with Bangel - he was forced to make Angel a vampire and so he went FINE he’s gonna be creepy as FUCK and still low key evil even when he’s supposed to be good! Because he’s a spiteful, petty, vindictive piece of shit - WE WERE BOTH HURT BY THE SAME MAN WHY DO YOU KEEP ATTACKING US)

They are SO MAD because bangel is so clearly not end game (they wouldn’t be acting this way if they felt “they had won”) and because spike did all the things angel never did. And instead of being mad AT JOSS they’re mad at spuffy’s like we were in the writers room or something 💀

Need to talk a bit about how important Bangel was as a ship to me when I was a tween. Because even though I prefer Spuffy and Fuffy now, and find Angel's early character to be a little dull and flat, theirs was still the first ship I remember being truly feral over. I recorded my first viewing of Becoming Pt 2 and wore the VHS out rewatching that episode.

And I think a huge part of that hyperfix, despite me not really being attracted to "boys" without fully understanding why at the time, was how much Angel was a part of the whole "flipped gender roles" the show was going for. Because back in the 90s, or hell even nowadays, the only male characters who were constantly needing to be rescued were scrawny nerd guys or fragile old men. And if a woman was a hero she was mostly rescuing either other, usually more petite, women - or kids. Angel was a very feared and powerful vampire, but the show brilliantly laid out the reason for why he's not the hero of the show in the first episode.

"Because I'm afraid."

Courage is typically seen as a "masculine" trait, particularly in the context of battle, yet it's Buffy - the sixteen year old cheerleader - who is braver than the two hundred year old vampire. To quote my favorite Doctor; "Courage isn't a matter of not being frightened. It's being afraid and doing what you have to do anyway." Buffy is still afraid but she doesn't let that fear hold her back like Angel does. Also I think the fact Angel is humble enough to admit this to someone who is still a stranger at this point is pretty damn attractive. Hell, just the fact that he never complains about feeling emasculated or sidelined by Buffy constantly rescuing him or taking the lead in fights is Very Sexy, and I say that as a lesbian. It's one thing him and Spike have in common, these two are both proud simps for their queen (Spike probably a little more) and to this day I still don't see enough of Strong Man Saved By Even Stronger Girlfriend than I would like and why mlw ships rarely do anything for me because this show altered my brain chemistry so much. I will never not swoon at Buffy saying "No one hurts my boyfriend!" in What's My Line. Seriously, how often do you get to see the girl be the Protective Alpha in a mlw ship?! Not enough. Also I think it's telling how the least popular Buffy ships were involving the guys who did seem to take issue with the whole "not being man enough to be her equal" thing....*clears throat*

But as well as the fact he's the one being saved, he also owes most of his growth to her. When people say "Angel couldn't have existed without Buffy" it's true in both the meta sense but also who Angel was between S1 and S3. He starts off as someone too crippled by fear and guilt to act and cleaves to Buffy as his chance of redemption, starts to get more involved with the Scoobies only to eventually be trapped in his own body (and then Hell), then ends basically flying the coop to his own adventures. Even though Angel starts off as a mysterious guide and support role, in a way he ends up being her protégé because he learns how to be a hero from watching her. I truly believe she's what inspires him to stop lurking in the shadows and Do Something, which eventually leads to him getting his own show where he can be a more traditional hero (sometimes to the level of missing the whole point about gender roles of the OG show but we'll leave that for another rant).

Honestly imagine the reactions if they made a show like Buffy today, considering the vitriol haters have for something like the Barbie movie, or any female Marvel / Star Wars character just existing.

Not a Bangel hater or a Spuffy hater but a secret third thing: I just don't think the show's writers were capable of depicting the relationships with older men they kept putting Buffy in without being weirdly creepy about them.

(Which is why the parts of the show that lean into or acknowledge that creepiness, like the Angelus parts of S2 or Spuffy in S5/S6, are generally more palatable to me than the parts of the show that don't seem to realize there's anything odd at all about, for example, a grown man 'falling in love' with a teenage girl he's only ever seen while driving past her school in his car. Or about a grad student dating one of the freshmen students he's meant to be a TA for and later telling her she's "stupid" for having second thoughts about their relationship because, despite lying to her about who he was, he's still a "nice, normal guy". Or about having a sexual relationship with somebody who less than a year earlier was breaking into your house to steal and smell your clothes and who once threatened to kill you if you didn't 'admit' you were attracted to him.)

I remember being completely shocked the first time I encountered people that hated on Buffy. It was back when the show was still airing and I was just floored because she was my favorite from day one and that never faltered for a second; to this day she's my favorite fictional character ever. Like I couldn't fathom disliking this girl who almost always tried her best despite having so much crap dumped on her repeatedly. IIRC most of the haters loved either Faith or Cordelia and wished Faith got to be the chosen one. They also mostly thought Spike was way too good for her, Angel too, tho I seem to recall most haters didn't ship bangel. Pretty sure they also took the potentials' sides over Buffy's simply out of spite it seemed. It was like they hate watched the show.

I have rarely encountered people that hate Buffy, but the common denominator of the few I have met is that they’re Spuffies who claim that Buffy abused Spike 😭 And at this point, I don’t care. If that’s your takeaway from what you’ve watched, you clearly watched a different show than me so why would I care about your opinion?

I just don’t get why anyone would watch BUFFY the Vampire Slayer if they hate Buffy 😭 The show is literally about her, all the other characters are there to serve her narrative. Like it’s truly just her world and everyone else is simply living in it. The only argument you can make is season seven because Buffy’s development is sidelined for other reasons that I don’t really have the patience to discuss anymore because it’s pretty pointless. 

I know new people discover the show all the time and they come in with these “hot takes” they think they have, when, really, they are discussions that some people have been having for over 20 years. So, it’s just about finding a balance. If you think it’s worthwhile having these debates still, that’s totally your prerogative. I’m personally exhausted and I’m here to just enjoy my gay little show in peace lol so I feel you! It’s definitely unfathomable to me how anyone could ever hate Buffy.

I answer most comments - sometimes if I get a lot of ‘extra kudos hearts’ on my collection fics I don’t, but in general I try to reply to all comments. I love the comment interaction and I do know I like myself when authors reply to my comments.

5. What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?

I’m not an angst writer, but with Solavellan, there is always some. I’m not sure though - 

Iwyn having to kill Solas - God Slayer

Solas getting the happy ending, but watching everyone die around him as he doesn’t age - Lightness 

Solas giving up his plans, but too late - I Wish It Could

6. What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?

I write a lot of Modern AU and fix it, and they are all happy! Because I will it so! 

I think so far, I think Hay is the happiest. It’s just a love, a life, in harmony. Nothing sad happens. 

7. Do you write crossovers? If so what is the craziest one you’ve written?

I do not, unless you count the btvs inspired vampire lore in Comfort. But it’s more of a fusion, technically. 

I think crossovers are difficult, but maybe I would write one at some point? Who knows. 

8. Have you ever received hate on a fic?

Nope. I think haters either seek popular people or pick something random. I’ve also not really recieved any weird backwards compliment/insult on a fic, which I know people do more often than outright hate (I see hate is more something I see against persons in asks on tumblr, because it’s much easier to haress people on tumblr.)

9. Do you write smut? If so what kind?

Yes, very much yes. I write barely there smut/fade to black,  sweet smut, and kinky smut. 

Hopefully it’s all emotional smut, and hot smut. 

10. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

As in someone copied my fic and claimed it was theirs? No, not that I know of? I think Dragon Age fandom is to small. Ofc someone could replace the character names and put it in a different fandom and I’d never know. But hopefully people don’t really do that? 

11. Have you ever had a fic translated?

I have not. I don’t write or think about my fics in Danish either, and I don’t think I’d ever publish my own fics in Danish (my first language). 

12. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

No, I’m not sure how it would work ? I have a shared world, but we each write ficslets in it. 

13. What’s your all-time favorite ship?

Tie between Spuffy and Solavellan

14. What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?

Uh, I will either finish or I made the decision to not finish. It might take me years, but if I made the choice that this fic should be written, then it will be. Otherwise I’ll decide to not write it. 

15. What are your writing strengths?

Pacing, emotion and smut.

Description and plot

17. What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

I sometimes toss in a bit of elvish in DA fics. I think this fits the canon way of doing it - Solas calls Lavellan vhenan not my heart. I tend to only use in game words/phrases from the DA wiki, or in rare cases stich it from there for my own con-lang attempt, in which case I put it in notes. 

The only time I did something different was for Temporal Arrangements, because I made magic deal with translation and the whole dialogue in Arlathan was in Elvish. (So here they use my love and my heart)

I dislike when people use lots of elvish, esp from some very popular con-lang attempts, especially during smut. I see a lot of the same phrase over and over again in fics and I admit it lowkey annoys me. (no we did not ever get the word for cum in canon). 

For other languages, I think in general it should be enough to ‘she said in Spanish’ - if the POV character understands Spanish. Otherwise it can be ‘she said something about clothes in Spanish’ indicating what the POV character undetrstands of the conversation. 

I think real languages are different than fake/settings ones. Tolkien uses various Elvish languages for flavor a lot, but usually only Songs and Exclamations. There’s never entire passages the reader has to go look up in the appendix to understands - even one of the songs are ‘roughly translated’ by Aragon in the books - the POV is fairly far 3rd person/omniscient and the reader doesn’t understand so it makes sense. I think this is the most sensible way to deal with it. 

18. What was the first fandom you wrote for?

Dragon Age.

19. What’s your favorite fic you’ve written?

This is such a hard question. I love all my children equally!

Probably a tie between Temerity and Home.

You know what? I don’t think I am, Buffy.

1) You know the baddy’s fate is sealed when they dare call Buffy a bitch, right?

2) Watching Buffy ax Caleb right in the balls and then make puns about it fills me with infinite joy.

3) I think you all know by now I’m not a Bangel shipper, so I wonder how Angel shippers feel about Buffy and Angel’s last on-screen conversation being about Spike. Doesn’t it feel a bit like a wasted opportunity? It’s not really OOC for Angel to act jealous and possessive (even though in the universe of the show he’s spent the last two years approximately being in love with Cordelia, so why does he think he has any right to question Buffy’s love life? Anyway, I know that’s the writers' fault – how they always blatantly ignored whatever was happening in each show for the shippy crossover moment – but the end result is that Angel looks like a two-timing asshole who can’t make up his mind about what or who he wants.) But like, the world is ending, this is what you want your last conversation to be…?

5) The cookie dough speech, though? One of my favorite speeches in the show…

I'm cookie dough. I'm not done baking. I'm not finished becoming whoever the hell it is I'm gonna turn out to be. I make it through this, and the next thing, and the next thing, and maybe one day I turn around and realize I'm ready. I'm cookies. And then, you know, if I want someone to eat… or enjoy warm, delicious cookie me, then...that's fine. That'll be then. When I'm done.

I think it’s one of the finest messages the show delivered, and it’s especially important coming from Buffy herself, someone who was seldom not in a relationship.

6) Callback #1…

This parallels both  Angel’s first appearance in the show in Welcome to the Hellmouth as well as his exit from the show in Graduation Day Part 2.

8) Of course, the shipping wars wouldn’t be complete without Spuffy talking about Angel. Guh.

13) See? Cut to the next morning, Buffy is telling the others her plans, inspired by none other than the First itself! I don’t think she would’ve thought of it if he hadn’t mentioned the fact that they needed the potentials to have real power, the power of a slayer.

16) Although their conversation is cute…

I really don’t see the point in spending precious minutes of a finale on these two. If we needed Faith to get closure with anyone, that was Buffy.

24) Ok, this is one my greatest movie/tv pet peeves. Why would anyone cut their hands? I get it, you need blood or whatever. I can think of 10 parts of your body you could get it from which wouldn’t be as inconvenient as your hand. Like, how do they continue doing things with a fucking open wound on the palm of their hands? It doesn’t make any sense! And it’s always the fucking hand! WHY!?

BUFFY So here's the part where you make a choice: What if you could have that power... now? In every generation, one slayer is born... because a bunch of men who died thousands of years ago made up that rule. They were powerful men. This woman is more powerful than all of them combined. So I say we change the rule. I say my power... should be our power. Tomorrow, Willow will use the essence of the scythe to change our destiny. From now on, every girl in the world who might be a slayer... will be a slayer. Every girl who could have the power... will have the power... can stand up, will stand up. Slayers... every one of us. Make your choice. Are you ready to be strong?

I love it. I do. It is an empowering moment, it’s Buffy and the slayers breaking free from the Council, taking back the power that was imposed onto them, choosing that power.

The irony is not lost on me, however, that Buffy is making the choice for – and therefore removing the agency of – every single potential slayer who is not in that room. She did ask the ones living with her, but what about the rest? What if they don’t want that power and its responsibility?

In spite of this, it still holds up as one of the greatest moments in the show.

Side note: I read somewhere (or saw an interview?) about how this speech was much longer, and how SMG delivered the whole speech in its entirety without making any mistakes, and when she ended everyone was so in awe at what she’d done as an actress that they started clapping. She is a great actress, isn’t she?

R.I.P. Anyanka Emanuella Jenkins, former vengeance demon, self-appointed American and defender of capitalism, arch-nemesis of bunnies, hater of subtleties, teller of truths.

I know the way Anya went pissed off a lot of people, especially because it’s almost a blink-and-you-missed-it moment. I do, however, feel that someone had to die in this way. Someone important, I mean. Not every main character death in the show could have a big preamble and a huge aftermath. Sometimes you see death coming, but other times, it happens in an instant and it’s done. That’s especially true in big battles like the one in this episode. There is no time to stop and mourn because if you do, you might end up on the dead pile yourself.

We see later how the only ones concerned about Anya are Xander and Andrew. That makes sense, too, in my opinion. Anya was never a true member of the Scooby gang. She was merely there because of Xander. I’m not saying that was okay, I’m simply stating a fact. In fact, I’ve voiced my annoyance about the way Buffy and Willow treated her several times. (This is proven by how little thought was given to her feelings after Xander left her at the altar…) It hardly matters anyway, because if she wanted to be remembered and missed by anyone, that most certainly was Xander. Her life revolved around him, for better or worse.

But, apart from this, I think this was a fitting way to finish her journey – from vengeance demon, to inadequate teenager, to girl in love, to working gal, to scorned lover, to vengeance demon again, to humanity connoisseur and admirer. She overcame her fear of death and she embraced her humanity, and she died stupidly fighting for what she believed in, just like humans do.

31) I think this is one of the most underrated puns in the show.

I will try to form a coherent thought because as I write this, I’m still bawling my eyes out. This ending is especially poignant for me because Buffy is my favorite character, so all I’ve ever wanted was her happiness. It’s been seven years. Seven years of heartbreak, pain, mourning loved ones, non-stopping fighting. Seven years of feeling the weight of the world on her shoulders. A girl, alone in the world, fighting the forces of evil. Never allowing herself to look forward because that always leads to disappointment and crushed expectations. But now? Nothing is stopping her now, nothing is holding her back. The open road is right ahead, and she can go and do whatever she wants to.

The show had to end with a final shot of Buffy. This was her journey, and though it’s far from over, that smile assures us that yes, she will be fine.

I guess it gives all of us a little bit of hope.

42) Is Chosen a perfect episode? I don’t think so. I think too much time was wasted on ship moments and side characters. There’s a lot of talk but not the kind I usually enjoy the most. It’s only half-way through the episode – when they get to Sunnydale High - that you really get that feeling of “Oh fuck, this is really the end, this is actually happening!”

But I do think it’s a good ending, nonetheless. There’s an epic battle – although I do enjoy the season 3 battle much more… - there’re callbacks and special character moments, there’s closure and there’s death because it wouldn’t be Buffy if no one ever died. (You lied, Giles.)

More importantly, it does what series finales ought to do – it pays tribute to its characters, and it’s a gift to the fans. I don’t think we should ever measure the quality of a show by how good their series finale is, you know? When I think of this show – and we all know I think about it a lot – it’s not “Chosen” what comes to mind. It’s everything that came before it. Chosen is a celebration of and a tribute to all of that. And as such, it is a perfect finale.

I just hate Spike haters.

Of course I hate all haters, that’s why, when I don’t like a character or a ship, I try really hard not to think about it and not to harass anyone about it. And it shouldn’t be difficult honestly. But I also understand that sometimes you can let yourself be too carried away. So I try to always remember that words can hurt if you don’t watch them very closely.

Haters don’t care about that, and it’s even worse for me with Spike haters (and Spuffy haters) because I was a big fan of Spike (still am) and a big fan of Buffy. I was a spuffy shipper, and I understood what was wrong and what was right in their relationship.

But man, Spike haters... how to describe Spike haters ? It seems like they only care about the two, maybe three first seasons of Buffy. Then it changed and they didn’t like it, so they’re bashing on all the other fans. And since then, which was in the late 1990s, they’re still angry at the world because the story didn’t evolve like they wanted. Not only that of course, bc I wouldn’t care if it was just them being angry at the world, no they’re also harassing people on everything they can find about Spike.

I watched some reaction videos today, about a girl watching Btvs for the first time. And of course, like a lot of us, she loved Spike. Well you can imagine what was the reaction of haters in her comments (”I don’t understand why anyone can love him” “you’re annoying when he’s on screen” etc.). Why would anyone took the time to write things like that ? What purpose behind this ? Do they think they can make her unlove a character bc they said so ?

And I’m not even talking about everything throwed at us when we try do defend him (we all have those discussions I think, about how we were monsters). Which is a mistake : don’t argue with them because they’re not viewers anymore, they’re just haters.

The saddest part is that Spike is still one of the favorite character on this show (among others), and yet we cannot have any discussion about the serie without the subject (the endless “Spike was bad !” rhetoric) being brought up. I was still very young when the serie ended, and I remember how I couldn’t talk about any of it (and even to this day) because the fandom properly sucked. I didn’t feel safe in this fandom. Still don’t. 

And it’s horrible to have a fandom divided like this. So today, I really try not to let ships and characters coming between fans and in some of my fandoms, everyone is quite polite and ships who they want... but I’m feeling more and more like this “old mentality” (that I only ever saw in Btvs back in the days) is now part of the fandom life for everyone. And this isn’t a good way to enjoy a fandom, so I can only recommend the “blocked” option and the blacklisted tags.

Buffy fandom content that’s largely “let’s shame the spuffy and spike girlies!” (girlies used genderlessly) by constantly telling us how bad/wrong/fucked up/sick/crazy/in need of therapy we are under the guise of “concern” for us is so crazy and so funny and so embarrassing for those creators because they’re literally just joss whedon 2.0:

Hating/shaming/finger wagging and acting morally superior to a character/ship and their fans but at the same time being COMPLETELY dependent on said character/ship/fans you spend the majority of your time dumping on!! Like what on earth would you do for content if you took away the thing you spend 70-90% of your time shitting on??? Angel only got a 5th season BECAUSE of Spike - do you realize how crazy that is??? Joss spent all this time trying and failing to destroy Spike’s character because “it wasn’t the Spike show” (screamed in James’ face by joss as he is pinning him against a wall - there’s a guy who’s footsteps you want to follow in!) and then he’s using Spike as a way to save Angel just a few years later 💀💀💀 THAT IS SO EMBARRASSING FOR JOSS AND ANGEL 😹😹😹😹

Like I am so sorry you do not understand spuffy and spike - truly. If you don’t love him and spuffy I genuinely feel sad for you because you are missing out on SO MUCH FUN, beauty, gut wrenching heart ache, angst, healing, tenderness, absolute poetry and all around sexy, slutty time - spuffy is the ship that has EVERYTHING, performed by two absolutely PHENOMENAL actors with bonkers chemistry. Spuffy just is that girl proven by the fact that the haters are making podcasts and writing books just to shit on us (like we didn’t already cover all of it enough from the show’s creator, the patriarchy and the show itself???) DECADES later 😹😹😹

So my darling Spuffys - please don’t take these people’s misogyny and self hatred to heart. I know we’re all often chronically misunderstood and it can be so frustrating to witness a beloved character or ship endure the same treatment of being so horribly misunderstood and to see others support them but truly they’re just FURIOUS angel didn’t do what Spike did and that he doesn’t waste his time moping and hating himself and helps buffy to do the same. They’re hating from outside a club they can’t even get into because they don’t have the media literacy, emotional intelligence, and self confidence in who they are as people to love characters who are naughty and have fun doing it 😈
