Many students frustrated when holding the pick so hold the pick as you hold a pen but keep off your 2nd,3rd,4th fingers. However, when you play chords you have to keep more space of the guitar pick in order to catch many strings when it comes to melodies, you have to hold the pick near to the narrowest edge as much as possible.
