So we all know at this point that Etsy sucks, but it's a pain in the ass to try to use big search engines to find small independent artists, so here's my pro tip: Use Etsy as a search engine and then filter to shops from your city.

Here's the search for "Silver jewelry." Dropshippers ahoy!

But if I go to the filters section and ask it to only show me shops based in Seattle, Washington, we get a completely different set of results with a completely different vibe.

I checked out the stacking rings by bespokenjewelry, and yep! Those are made by an actual person! Her name is Gretchen! She lists her instagram where you can request custom work!

…I actually want to buy some of her earrings now, which I wasn't planning on doing when I started writing this!

Honestly when I do this I then try to search the shop name on the wider internet to see if they have their own website I can order from since I don't want Etsy to get my money. In my personal experience I get paid more when people order directly through my website, so I want to support other people's websites directly. That said, any order is a good order!

I hope this is helpful to you in your quest to find cool, handmade, local art! Go forth and subvert Etsy's terrible algorithms!
