Macy Gray “On How Life Is” LP. I picked this album up in the dollar bin back in 2008 with the intention of reselling it for the $20 it was worth at the time, but Nicole begged me to keep it as she really liked the album when she was a kid. I always liked “I Try” but never really sat down and listened to the record. Whenever Nicole put it on, it was always incidental music. Either we were entertaining or cleaning the house or sharing a bottle of wine and conversing. In late August I saw she was coming to this new venue in Cleveland and mentioned it to Nicole. She got real excited and a few days later the local free weekly had a special promo for $10 off each ticket, so we got tickets. For the next month Nicole went on a Macy Gray binge and I ended up hearing her a lot and really enjoyed a lot of her tunes from through out her career via this huge Spotify play list I kept hearing. We saw her at the end of September and the show was really great. This album doesn’t get enough credit considering how solid it is. It flows really well and almost all of the songs are good, with more than a few being truly great. I think the enormity of “I Try” causes people not to listen to this album with open ears. It would be nice if the album would be remixed to remove some of the cliche late 90’s production bits like the over use of DJ scratches and such. But otherwise, the album is somewhat timeless in construction and that really translates in a live setting with a basic, tight band.
