A detailed review of the OnePlus 7T from :wired:
I TEST A lot of phones here at WIRED. Smartphones incrementally change each year, and theyā€™ve become more of an essential utility and less of a source of the tech worldā€™s greatest innovations. I often appreciate their new features, but few of those enhancements spark actual joy. The OnePlus 7T, however, has done just that. Putting down the glossy, fingerprint-plastered Galaxy Note10 to review the matte glass 7T was both a relief and a reminder why OnePlus has continued to gain popularity as a smartphone brand year after year.
Like the company's previous devices, the 7T is a phone that showcases much of the best smartphone tech introduced in 2019 at a $600 priceā€”more than $100 cheaper than many top rivals from Samsung, LG, and other manufacturers. What Iā€™ve come to appreciate more is how it uses all that latest tech to enhance my life, often by getting out of my way. Its touch interface is simple and looks just like the brand new Google Android 10 OS it runs on, only a little easier to navigate. Itā€™s just more pleasant, like a PB&J sandwich where mom cut the crust off just because she loves you.
Smooth and Frosty
If youā€™ve seen an expensive smartphone in the last two years, you know what the 7T looks and feels like, but Iā€™ll describe it anyway. It has a 6.5-inch AMOLED display (that means deeper blacks and richer colors) that takes up its entire front. A teenie teardrop cutout hanging from the top of the screen holds a 16-megapixel selfie camera.
Like the similar and more expensive OnePlus 7 Pro, this display has a 90 Hz refresh rate, which makes the entire interface noticeably smoother. OnePlus calls it a Fluid AMOLED display, and it may live up to that name. Phones have been bumping up the resolution (this one has a 1080p HD screen), but the bump in refresh rate is more noticeable. Everything feels smoother and faster, with richer color than many displays.
The power and volume buttons are in all the right places, and OnePlus has kept its sound/mute/vibrate switch on the right side. Itā€™s a dead-simple little toggle and worth every millimeter of its cutout, letting you easily silence your phone or perk it up anytime.
OnePlus was one of the first companies to introduce an in-display fingerprint sensor, and the latest iteration on this phone is faster than ever. Iā€™ve had trouble with Samsung's on-screen sensors in the Galaxy S10 and Note10, but the optical fingerprint reader in the 7T does the trick in a way thatā€™s more convenient than the fingerprint sensors on the back of many phones like the Google Pixel 3A.
The phone's frame is metal, and the back is covered in shimmering Gorilla Glass because ... well ... trends. Itā€™s silly that the back is made of glass at all, given that we probably drop our phones more than anything besides our keys, and there's no big advantage to the glass here since the 7T doesnā€™t have wireless charging. But the ā€œglacier blueā€ color certainly is sleek, and the frosted texture repels fingerprints better than some phones. OnePlus thankfully includes a clear case in the box. I suggest you slip it on.
All Specā€™d Out
Between all that glass is a list of luxury technical specs. The 7T runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855+ processor, which is half a tad speedier than the 855 on some earlier phones this year. It also comes with 8 gigabytes of RAM, and 128 GB of storage. (Sorry, no MicroSD slot; thatā€™s all you get.) These are all fantastic numbers, as are the numbers youā€™ll see from benchmark performance tests. Itā€™s a powerful phone, right up there with the best.
OnePlus doesnā€™t make a lot of changes to Android 10, but the changes it does make seem to (mostly) improve the phone's performance. You can more easily swipe up or down from anywhere on the homescreen to access the notification shade or pull up your entire list of apps. I also like the gesture controls that mimic recent iPhones, and the option to turn the back button into a swipe from the left side of the phone has worked well for me. Your mileage may vary, but you can disable these gestures controls and go back to a traditional back-button setup if you like.
The fact that the 7T even has the latest Google OS is a testament to the companyā€™s focus on delivering software and security updates. It promises two years of updates for buyers of the 7T, and has demonstrated a positive track record on updates for older phones. This is notableā€”despite costing close to $1,000, most Android phones outside of Googleā€™s Pixel line and Motorola's handsets do not get regular software updates, leaving security vulnerabilities exposed and new features out of reach.
With stereo speakers and a gaming mode that optimizes graphics (and can also restrict notifications and calls so you can play without interruption), this is an ideal machine for playing Mario Kart Tour, or any other high-end title, until your eyeballs fall out. Netflix looks lovely, as well.
Iā€™ve ended most days having spent four or five hours with the screen active, and seen about 50 percent battery remaining. A few nights, itā€™s been closer to 30 to 40 percent, if I stay up late. This is good, but somewhat normal battery life. If you want to improve your power efficiency, you can turn the 90 Hz refresh rate down to a more normal 60 Hz. In a pinch, the included charger is very quick. It can juice the 7T up significantly in a half hour.
Sadly, like many high-end phones, thereā€™s no audio jack (and no adapter in the box), but OnePlus sells an adapter for $13. And this phone also isnā€™t IP-rated for water resistance. OnePlus claims it will handle some rain pretty well, but you wonā€™t want to drop it in the tub.
Ready to Zoom
When it comes to smartphones, you ainā€™t cool unless you have three rear cameras these days, and OnePlus always wants to be cool. Like the 7 Pro, it has a 48-megapixel standard rear shooter that outputs extra sharp 12-megapixel images, a 16-megapixel sensor beneath an ultrawide lens, and a 12-megapixel telephoto. This lets you take shots that you can both zoom out a bit, and zoom in to 2X. Thereā€™s also a portrait mode, which adds a bokeh effect, the shallow depth-of-field trick that keeps the subject in focus but blurs the background in a close-up photo.
I had a great time shooting plenty of outdoor shots around Tulsa, Oklahoma, in the past week, and I've even enjoyed the extra stability of the Super Stable video mode, which uses the wide angle lens to better stabilize 1080p video; 4K 30 fps video is also available. Everything looks good, especially shots in the Nightscape mode. Like the new iPhone 11 and the latest Pixel phones, the 7T enhances night shots, adding more light, color and detail to areas that would have just appeared as black splotches on older phones. Night shots require a steady hand and a second or two wait, but they are a definite improvement.

In some of the above shots, you can see some examples of Nightscape mode and Super Macro mode. If you press the flower icon in the upper left side of the camera app, you can move in closer to small objects and still see them stay in focus. The effect isnā€™t perfect, but I was able to get closer to some plants and ants than I ever have before using a smartphone. Itā€™s a blast to play around with modes like these, and they solidify the OnePlus 7T as a phone for shutterbugs.
Plus One
OnePlus isnā€™t tampering with the formula that got it to the dance, and thatā€™s good. The 7T is one of the most powerful phones you can buy, and it costs hundreds less than its peers. It also runs on all four major US carriers, and T-Mobile sells it directly.
I've recommended the Pixel 3A ($400) as the best phone to buy for a few months now, and given the performance it offers for the price, for many of you it still is the best phone. But if you are willing to spend an extra $200, the OnePlus 7T will give you a taste of the luxuries youā€™d otherwise miss out on.
Correction: I referred to the display as a "Liquid" display. OnePlus calls it a "Fluid" display.

Performance is objectively a major factor in defining the value of a device. Along with which we are seeing a recent wave of design adjustments that are unprecedented. These changes are not necessary or improving your experience with your smartphone, more or less. But it isnā€™t just vanity either, the innovative designs and in some cases, gimmicks are adding a unique element of being aesthetically and/or mechanically different and pleasing.
OnePlus Concept One
And the past year, in particular, we saw a lot of pop up cameras and foldable smartphones. It was expected that the trend would be carried forward but right at the beginning of the OnePlusĀ has announced that its OnePlus Concept One smartphone which will be unveiled at theĀ Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2020Ā in the US will feature an ā€œinvisible cameraā€ and color-shifting glass technology.
Tumblr media
Source: OnePlus-Twitter
The electrochromic sheet of glass would be covering the cameras and its responsibility for all the color-changing magic. Besides the invisibility factor being outright cool, the design also allows minimizing the camera bump which has been ever so protruding with each passing year, with better, bigger cameras on the thinnest possible device.
OnePlus is now about to challenge conventions in design by having a truly unbroken design at the back of a smartphone. It has a premium feel to it and at the same time, it would be having the same old performance that OnePlus has always offered.
At present, the major thing OnePlus needs to look out for is the cost factor as the electrochromic sheet of glass is expensive and as long as it canā€™t be made affordable, it cannot be introduced to the commercial market.
And another minor concern is the fact that the electrochromic sheet of glass which would go from translucent to near opaque on turning off the camera app, it wears out after using it for a while and so it is important to figure out the durability factor.
All speculations and concerns set aside, in this era of rapid innovation when almost nothing surprises us anymore, OnePlus has introduced something new which is certainly looking promising just from its prototype.

Realme X2 Review
Tumblr media
Weā€™ve known since September that Realme would be launching the Realme XT 730G this month, and that time has finally come. Now known as the Realme X2, this is the companyā€™s answer to Xiaomiā€™s Redmi Note 8 Pro, which is one of the most powerful current-gen smartphones that you can buy for less than Rs. 20,000.
The Realme X2 comes in at roughly the same price points as the Realme XTĀ (Review), but features a much more powerful processor, quicker charging, and a higher-resolution front camera. All in all, it seems to be a pretty decent upgrade on paper. The main attraction here though is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 730G SoC, which is targeted at gamers. This SoC is said to offer better graphics performance than its counterpart, the Snapdragon 730, as well as better overall performance compared to the Snapdragon 710 and 712. The Realme X2 is also the first phone in this segment to be built around this chip, thanks to aggressive pricing from Realme.
If youā€™re one of the many people always looking out for a good smartphone priced under Rs. 20,000, youā€™ll be wondering whether the Realme X2 is the best offering right now. Letā€™s have a look.
Realme X2 design
The Realme X2 carries the same design DNA as the Realme XT, rather than the X2 ProĀ (Review) as its name would lead you to believe. Physically, itā€™s hard to tell the two phones apart, unless you get the new Pearl Green colour which is only available for the X2 right now. This colour trim has a glossy frame, instead of the matte finish on the other colour options. Build quality and finish are both good, and this phone is not terribly slippery. The back also has the same ā€˜hyperbolicā€™ pattern that the XT had, which means it will glisten when light hits it as it moves.
The screen is still relatively large, so using this phone comfortably with one hand can be challenging at times. Button placement is good and the layout of the ports is also the same as on previous Realme phones, with the speaker, USB Type-C port, and headphone socket all placed at the bottom. The X2 supports expandable storage and has a dedicated slot for a microSD card, in addition to the slots for two Nano-SIMs.
Tumblr media
The Realme X2 comes in a new Pearl Green finish
The 6.4-inch full-HD+ (1080Ɨ2340) display is the same as what we saw on the Realme XT. Itā€™s a Super AMOLED panel with an in-display fingerprint sensor. The display also uses Gorilla Glass 5 for scratch protection, and Realme has gone with the same glass for the back panel too. The Realme X2 has the same camera layout as the XT, which protrudes quite a bit, but the bundled case evens this out.
The box content is similar too, consisting of a SIM eject tool, a USB Type-C cable, a case, and a fast charger. The latter is new as this is the first Realme phone to come with VOOC Flash Charge 4.0, which supports 30W fast charging. Essentially, itā€™s the same Warp Charge 30T charger thatā€™s bundled with the newer OnePlus 7T series. We verified this by plugging the OnePlus 7T Pro McLaren Edition into Realmeā€™s charger, and it detected it as a Warp charger.
Realme X2 specifications and software
The star of the Realme X2 is its processor. This is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 730G SoC, which weā€™ve seen before in phones such as the Samsung Galaxy A80 and the Oppo Reno 2Ā (Review). Notably, both these phones cost more than Rs. 30,000, so to offer the same SoC for under Rs. 20,000 is quite an achievement for Realme. The Snapdragon 730G features eight Kryo 470 cores and an Adreno 618 GPU, both of which are superior to those found in the Snapdragon 710 and 712 SoCs. Itā€™s also built on the smaller 8nm fabrication process, which should make it more power efficient.
The Realme X2 has been launched in three variants in India ā€” one with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage (Rs. 16,999); one with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage (Rs. 18,999); and finally 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage (Rs. 19,999). All variants use LPDDR4X RAM and the UFS 2.1 flash storage standard. Other connectivity features include dual-band Wi-Fi ac, Bluetooth 5, support for three satellite navigation systems, and the usual suite of sensors.
Tumblr media
The Realme X2 features a dedicated slot for a microSD card
This phone also supports Googleā€™s Widevine L1 DRM certification, so videos from apps such as Netflix can be streamed at higher-than-SD resolutions. The Realme X2 doesnā€™t support FM radio though, which the XT did. The Indian version also lacks NFC, but this shouldnā€™t be a big deal for most.
The Realme X2 ships with ColorOS 6.1, just like the X2 Pro. The security patch was a little dated on our unit (October 2019), but hopefully, this should be fixed soon. The software features are very similar to what we recently saw in the Realme X2 Pro. Thereā€™s Googleā€™s Digital Wellbeing, a system-wide dark mode, and plenty of gestures and shortcuts to play around with. You also get lots of preinstalled apps, and only the third-party ones can uninstalled. Weā€™ve covered all the features before, so donā€™t forget to check out the Realme X2 Pro, Realme 5 Pro, and Realme XT reviews for all the details.
Realme X2 performance and battery life
We had the top-end 8GB model of the Realme X2 with us, and as expected, Android ran pretty smoothly. The in-display fingerprint sensor was quick at authentication and we didnā€™t encounter any mis-reads or failed attempts. You even get a bunch of different animation styles for the fingerprint position indicator to choose from. Face recognition works very well too and you can use it even in very dimly lit environments. Thereā€™s no notification LED, but you can enable a rudimentary always-on-display mode which shows you basic information such as the time and alerts from certain apps such as messages or missed calls.
We didnā€™t face any issues with heating. Even with heavy camera use outdoors, the back and sides of the phone barely got warm, which is a good sign. The Realme X2 also delivered solid performance in games. We played PUBG Mobile, Asphalt 9: Legends, and Arena of Valour ā€” all graphically intensive titles ā€” and they ran very well without causing any excessive heating to the X2. Gameplay was smooth even with the graphics settings in Asphalt 9: Legends and PUBG Mobile cranked all the way up.Ā The phone performed well in benchmarks too. We got 267,419 points in AnTuTu and and 59fps in GFXbenchā€™s T-Rex test.Ā
Tumblr media
The rear camera setup on the Realme X2 is the same as on the Realme XT
Audio quality is another area in which the Realme X2 fared well. It only has a single speaker but thereā€™s Dolby Atmos enhancement thatā€™s on by default, and this helps boost the mid-range and lower frequencies. The large display is great for watching videos, thanks to its punchy colours, good viewing angles, and more than satisfactory brightness.
Even with heavy usage, we were easily able to use the Realme X2 for a full day, if not more. The 4,000mAh battery, coupled with the 8nm SoC will easily give you about a day and a half of runtime with medium to light usage. Surprisingly, we didnā€™t get a very impressive runtime in our HD video battery loop test. The Realme X2 ran for just 13 hours and 11 minutes, which was lower than expected.
Charging speed was also impressive. We were able to charge the Realme X2 from zero all the way to about 60 percent in half an hour, and up to 95 percent in an hour. This is thanks to the VOOC Flash Charge 4.0 feature and bundled 30W charger.
Realme X2 cameras
In terms of cameras, the only thing thatā€™s new here compared to the Realme XT is the front camera. The XT uses a 32-megapixel front-facing camera, which has an f/2.0 aperture. For normal selfies, the camera shoots images at the native resolution, but in Portrait mode, the images are pixel-binned down to 8-megapixels.
Using the front camera under good light, we found image quality to be quite impressive. Details were solid, colours were accurate, and exposure was generally well balanced. Even when shooting against the light, we found the HDR to work very well, exposing our face and the background equally well. Selfies in low-light looked quite average, though. There was visible noise in photos, and details werenā€™t great.
Tumblr media

The Realme X2 lets you use Nightscape for the selfie camera, which improved the exposure a bit even in dimly lit areas. However, this still needs more work, as at times, we ended up with some heavy pixel distortion in the final shots. The screen flash was bright and very effective in lighting up our face, even in very dark scenarios.
The Realme X2 can shoot 1080p selfie videos, and under good light, details were good and colours looked natural. Videos are stabilised, but the electronic stabilisation caused some mild distortion when we moved about, and thereā€™s no way to turn this off. Thereā€™s a new bokeh mode for selfie videos, which actually worked pretty well even when we had two faces in the frame. It even shows you the background blur effect in real-time, as youā€™re recording. Low-light selfie videos arenā€™t the best, but are passable provided thereā€™s good artificial lighting around.
The rear cameras are essentially the same setup as the Realme XT. We have a primary 64-megapixel sensor with an f/1.8 aperture; an 8-megapixel wide-angle camera; a 2-megapixel depth sensor; and a 2-megapixel macro camera. The camera app offers the same features found in the Realme X2 Pro. You can shoot videos using the wide-angle camera; thereā€™s an ā€˜Ultra Steadyā€™ shooting mode; and you can adjust the level of blur when shooting Portrait stills and video.
Realme has promised a ā€˜Super Nightscape Portraitā€™ shooting mode, which should arrive with a future software update. It sounds as though this will allow Nightscape to be used for Portrait shots too, which should be interesting.

Shot using Nightscape on the Realme X2 (tap to see full-sized image)
The primary 64-megapixel camera captures oversampled 16-megapixel photos by default. In daylight, we found image quality to be very good. Objects had sharp, well-defined edges, details were good, and HDR worked well. The sides of each frame had a mild sprinkling of noise, but this was only noticeable once we zoomed in all the way. We had some intermittent autofocus issues, especially with close-up objects, but this wasnā€™t persistent. Close-ups also looked good, with good colour saturation and a pleasing natural depth effect.
We were happy with the Portrait mode results too. The dedicated depth camera managed to detect edges very well and our subjectā€™s face had good sharpness and detail. The macro camera is useful, but details werenā€™t always the best. Plus, youā€™ll need ample light to get good shots. The wide-angle camera was useful too, and barrel distortion wasnā€™t too noticeable, if at all. Details and colours were good, but not on the same level as what the primary camera captured. In low light, this sensor isnā€™t of much use, as details were very weak and exposure was poor, even with Nightscape.
We found the video quality to best at 1080p 30fps, when using the primary camera. Electronic stabilisation worked well and didnā€™t cause any shimmer when walking about in daylight. The X2 can shoot at 4K too, but without any stabilisation. The ā€˜Ultra Steadyā€™ mode showed us extremely smooth video in the viewfinder, but the recorded video still had some noticeable jerkiness. In low light, there was noticeable grain in dark areas, and some noticeable distortion due to the electronic stabilisation when we moved around.
Verdict
The Realme X2 builds on the success of the Realme XTĀ (Review), and is yet another superb all-rounder priced below Rs. 20,000. It just makes sense to pick this over the Realme XT or even the Realme XĀ (Review) at the moment, since for a bit more money, you get the same software as the X2 Pro plus some nice hardware upgrades. The X2 is still using a dewdrop notch though so if itā€™s style youā€™re after, then the Realme X with its notchless screen and pop-up front camera is still the better bet.
Low-light video quality could be refined a bit, and FM radio is missing, which was available with the XT. Other than this, it offers a good display, strong battery life with very fast charging, a capable set of cameras, and very good gaming performance. Even if you arenā€™t a gamer, the Realme X2 is currently the best Realme phone you should consider under Rs. 20,000.

LG V60 ThinQ with Dual ScreenReview: It Might Not Be Mr. Right, but It Could Be Mr. Right Now
The first device to offer an optional LGĀ Dual Screen case was the LG V50 ThinQ, which was soon followed by the LG G8X ThinQ. While I liked what LG was trying to do by adding the optional second display to both of those earlier models, it wasnā€™t until the LG V60 ThinQ with Dual Screen ā€” mixed with the crazy times that we are living in ā€” that it all finally made sense.
Letā€™s be clear, even on the more pocketable LG V50 ThinQ and G8X ThinQ smartphones, the addition of the Dual Screen case made for a device that was at all times a bit bulky and heavier than normal. The LG V60 ThinQ on its own starts as a super-sized device; at first glance, it would seem that putting a Dual Screen case on such a large phone would result in a veritable brick. Well, it is but it isnā€™t, and right now the size is just fine with me.
The LG V60 ThinQ
Maybe itā€™s because ā€” other than weekly grocery and post office runs ā€” Iā€™ve been isolating in my home since March 9th, but pocketability and portability just havenā€™t seemed particularly important these days. Much more desirable? A large, bright screen and a fast processor ā€” both of which are present in the LG V60 ThinQ.
Included in the box are the V60 ThinQ smartphone, a microfiber cloth, a USB Type-C to Type-C charging cable, a wall charger, a SIM tool, a quick start guide, and a product safety and warranty information booklet.
On its own, the LG V60 ThinQ measures approximately 6.7ā€³ tall by 3.1ā€³ wide by 0.35ā€³ thick, and it weighs 7.6 ounces; it other words, itā€™s a beast. The display features a 6.8ā€ OLED FHD+ with Cinematic FullVision, 2460Ɨ1080 resolution, and a 20.5:9 aspect ratio. The phoneā€™s body is composed of Gorilla Glass 6 on the back with a Gorilla Glass 5 display on the front; a gold-colored aluminum frame wraps around all of the sides. The phone feels solid in hand; while its edges from the top appear steeply vertical, the glass on the back is curved so that you wonā€™t have sharp edges digging into your palm when youā€™re holding it.
Although the V60 ThinQ is on the larger side, it manages to not feel too unwieldy. The display has a very thin ~1.2ā€³ long speaker embedded in its center top. Directly under that, there is a punch-hole camera; otherwise, itā€™s just a big slab of glass. The front display has slightly beveled, 2.5D glass. Iā€™ve mentioned before that I prefer a flatter screen like the one on the V60 ThinQ versus one of the curvier 3D glass displays. On the left side of the phone, there is a microphone, the volume buttons, and a dedicated Google Assistant button that seems largely superfluous since you canā€™t reassign it and you can access the assistance by swiping up from either bottom corner or saying ā€œhey, Google ā€¦ā€.
On the bottom of the V60 ThinQ, there is a 3.5mm headphone jack, a USB Type-C port, a microphone, and a speaker. The headphone jack seems like a bit of a throw-back at this point, but LG has really stayed vigilant with its support for those who prefer wireless headphones. LG continues to support its Hi-Fi Quad-DAC features that can only work with wired headphones, and the digital-to-audio converter (DAC) produces a rich and immersive music audio experience. Iā€™m pretty sure that the V60 ThinQ is the only current flagship still offering a headphones jack, so if you care for wired headphones over wireless, this is the phone for you. Since Iā€™ve been sheltering in place for the last two months, I have been able to rediscover the joy of using some of my nicer wired headphones with this phone; so in its own little way, the V60 ThinQ has managed to spark joy in a trying time.
On the right side of the phone, there is a power button. Okay, I have a quibble ā€¦ if I were designing my perfect phone, I would have the power button on the right side with the volume buttons directly above or below. I realize that this is a personal preference, but it really makes sense when the Dual Screen case is on the phone, as weā€™ll discuss later.
At the top of the phone, there is a microphone and a combination of SIM and microSD memory card tray.
In most markets, you can get the V60 ThinQ in either Classy Blue or Classy White. The blue combined with the gold trim is surprisingly pretty, and itā€™s too bad almost everyone will either keep theirs hidden in the Dual Screen case. Even though the v60 is MIL-STD 810G tested, with so much glass exposed it would be prudent to also keep a slim case on hand for times when youā€™re not using the Dual Screen case. You can see the full specs for the LG V60 ThinQ here.
On the back, youā€™ll find the rear camera array lined in a single row, similar in appearance to the Samsung Galaxy S10. Most phones seem to be moving to a square or rectangle camera array shape; I donā€™t have a real preference, but some might see a row array as dated. The rear cameras include a 64-megapixel main camera, a 13-megapixel wide-angle camera, and a time-of-flight sensor for depth and 3D photo features. As you can see, the back is a huge slab of glass; the V60 is prone to showing fingerprints and random smears. If itā€™s covered in a case, you wonā€™t even notice, but youā€™ll be glad for that included microfiber cloth when you are carrying it naked.
The Display
Take a look at these photos and tell me if you see any obvious deal-breakers? Some might not like the black bezels around the V60 ThinQā€™s screen; the bezels measure approximately 3mm on the sides, 4mm on the top, and 7mm at the bottom. The 10-megapixel front-facing camera is just a hole-punch design, so there are obviously not multiple cameras or sensors present. Itā€™s also worth mentioning that unlike many other phones, the LG does not offer face unlock security; your options are swipe to unlock, using a pattern, using a numeric PIN, entering a password, and in-display fingerprint scanning (which works very well). One last thing that might be a deal-breaker is the V60 ThinQ screenā€™s refresh rate. If youā€™re used to using a phone with a 90Hz or 120Hz screen (like a newer OnePlus, Pixel, or Samsung flagship), you might notice that the scrolling isnā€™t quite as smooth. If you havenā€™t been regularly using a device with a higher refresh rate, or if you are able to appreciate that a lower refresh rate means the battery will last even longer, the 60Hz display will not bother you at all. Otherwise, the display excellent at showing deep blacks and vivid colors; it can also be made almost blindingly bright
Ā  Battery Life, Speed, and Operating System
The V60 ThinQ has a very generous 5,000mAh which can get me through a day and a half of steady use before a charge is absolutely necessary ā€” but thatā€™s only when the phone is being used without the Dual Screen case. Using the Dual Screen case knocks off at least a third of the expected battery life. When itā€™s time to top it off, the V60 supports Qualcomm Quick Charge 4.0 through the USB Type-C port as well as the convenience of Qi wireless charging. The V60 ThinQ is loaded with the top-of-the-line Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 Octa-core chip (the same one thatā€™s in the Samsung S20 series), and the phone has a respectable 8GB RAM with 128GB user memory and microSD memory card expansion possible. The LG V60 ThinQ runs Android 10, which is the latest version of Android available ā€¦ right now. Iā€™m a little bit concerned because, in the past, LG hasnā€™t been great about regularly pushing security or feature updates. However, the latest update on the V60 ThinQ is April 29th which is on par with the Pixel 4 XLā€™s May 5th update and OnePlusā€™s May 6th update. To be fair, Samsung hasnā€™t updated the Galaxy S20 series since March 27th (on my AT&T version, anyway). Hopefully, LG is going to continue to do better with updates.
The Camera
The camera is usually the point where a phone that Iā€™m reviewing will either set itself apart from others or it will slide into a mediocre pack. The ideal camera on any phone, at least for me, is one that can take consistently good photos without a lot of fiddling around and without taking too long. While I havenā€™t been able to use the LG while traveling, as I usually try to do for reviews, I have used the V60 ThinQ all around our home and yard during this quarantine, taking photos of daily life as it happens. These photos were resized to 2500 pixels and renamed, but otherwise, they havenā€™t been retouched. Some have an @geardiary watermark on them because the V60 ThinQ has a camera setting that will automatically add them on its own; this feature is fantastic for perfectly framed shots, but itā€™s not so great if you have to crop. Even so, automatic watermarking is a surprisingly handy set-it-and-forget-it feature that I wish every camera on every different manufacturerā€™s phone had. You can click on any one of these photos to start a slideshow.
Ā  All this photo needs is a little cropping and tweaking, and it would be ready to use in a post; thatā€™s a handy feature for a blogger!
And while it may seem like a little thing to some, I like that you can set Google Photos to be the default gallery over the included LG app; that is impossible to do on the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra.
On its own, the LG V60 ThinQ has been an enjoyable phone to use, but it happens to have an ace up its sleeve when itā€™s in the Dual Screen Case.
The LG V60 ThinQ Dual Case
Why would I want to go out of my way to add extra weight and bulk to my already chunky LG V60 ThinQ? Ordinarily, I might have to take a hard pass. Sheltering at home for the past 2+ months has given me a new perspective on what I find useful and what I donā€™t. Suddenly portability isnā€™t as huge a deal to me, and the ability to multitask is now most important. The LG V60 ThinQ Dual Screen case has made it a cinch to handle two tasks at once, although the experience isnā€™t without caveats.
One of the first caveats Iā€™ll bring up is that LG has once again made the Dual Screen case hardware so that it covers up the USB Type-C port on the bottom of the V60ThinQ.
LG G8X ThinQ in Dual Screen case on top of the LG V50 ThinQ in its Dual Screen case.
Iā€™m not sure why they discontinued the open bottom with POGO pin design of the V50 ThinQ and its Dual Screen case when they made the Dual Screen case for the G8X ThinQ, but once again, for the V60 ThinQ, we are left with having to use an easy-to-misplace magnetic plug that snaps onto the end of a Type-C cable. For a better look at what Iā€™m talking about, take a look at this shot comparing the open bottom of the V50 ThinQ in its Dual Screen case versus the closed bottom of the G8X ThinQ in its Dual Screen case. The good news is that you can wirelessly charge the V60 ThinQ while itā€™s in the DualCase on any Qi-enabled charging pad.
Ā  The Dual Screen case is 6.96ā€³ tall by 3.4ā€³ wide by 0.6ā€³ thick, and on its own, it weighs 4.7 ounces; with the LG V60 ThinQ installed, the combo weighs a whopping 12.3 ounces. Yeah, thatā€™s not a typo. :grimace:
In return for that extra weight, you get two matching 6.8ā€³ FHD+ OLED (2460 x 1080 and 395 ppi) displays that can allow you to become a master multitasker. The only front-facing camera is on the main (right) screen, but the identical screen on the right has the same hole-punch camera. Itā€™s symmetrical, and it doesnā€™t bug me.
You can personalize the second screen to match your main screenā€™s wallpaper. You can add dock apps, widgets, and app folders to it; in other words, itā€™s like having a second phone that can communicate (almost) flawlessly with your main phone.
Now, are you going to get the full-sized tablet screen experience you get with a folding display smartphone such as the Samsung Galaxy Fold or the Huawei Mate X? Obviously not. The bezels on both screens make that impractical and ugly.
But what you can do with the second screen is have your email open on one side while you watch YouTube videos on the other. You can peruse Instagram while on a Zoom call. You can have messages open while youā€™re reading a book. You can have a game with obnoxious ads open on one screen while you read the news on the other screen. Yes, you can use the second screen as a gamepad; yes, you can use the second screen as a live viewfinder when taking photos, and yes, you can use the LG Smart Keyboard as an edge-to-edge keyboard for a cute little on-the-go mini laptop. But letā€™s get real. The main benefit for some people will be that they can have a dictionary open on one screen while they are playing Word with Friends on the other.
When youā€™re using the Dual Screen features, you can swap screens from the main to the second screen, you can put the main screen to sleep, or you can turn off the Dual Screen completely. The Dual Screen case folds 360Āŗ so you can fold the second screen behind the main screen when you need to reply to emails or answer texts with both thumbs; itā€™s a bit difficult to manage actual keying when the Dual Screen case is open, otherwise, unless you are proficient at typing with your pointer fingers.
The last thing I want to bring up is the handy cover display on the front cover of the Dual Screen case. It offers built-in notifications, the date, and time, as well as battery information. Itā€™s very handy to have this info available when the V60 ThinQ is in the Dual Screen case.
Pandemics are weird. The things that seemed important a few months ago, like pocketable phones with cute little displays, arenā€™t quite as appealing anymore. Needs and wants change, and right now ā€” a phone that can give me two large, fully independent and functioning displays without having to switch back and forth between two apps on a single screen seems like a no-brainer. With the Dual Screen case installed on the LG V60 ThinQ, I feel like I am functioning at a more efficient level than normal. Right now, thatā€™s priceless.
The LG V60 ThinQ with Dual Screen Case retails between $800 and $999 depending on where and how Itā€™s purchased; it is available directly from LG, as well as AT&T (expect plenty of pre-loaded bloatware), Sprint, Verizon, and other retailers.
Source: Manufacturer supplied review sample
What I Like: 5G support; 3.5mm headphone jack; The LG V60 ThinQ in blue with the gold accents is gorgeous; The screen is brilliant; The phone is responsive and fast; You can add a microSD card to expand storage; The Dual Screen case is easy to activate, personalize, and control; Excellent battery life (when not using the Dual Screen case); IP68 dust and water-resistance; Excellent Quad-DAC features that work with wired headphones
What Needs Improvement: Battery life takes a huge ding when running both screens; Phone will be too large for many ā€” one-hand use is practically impossible ā€” even without the Dual Screen case; Adding the Dual Screen case makes the already large LG V60 ThinQ bricklike; No face-ID; The proprietary magnetic charging attachment needs to go; The bezels are still just a tad too large between the phone and the second screen when the LG V60 ThinQ is in the Dual Case ā€” If LG can ever get the bezels eliminated when the phone is in the Dual Case, they will have a solid folding phone alternative; No option to enable 90Hz or 120Hz

How to efficiently charge your devices

How to efficiently charge your devices
You can just use the charger that came with your device. Or you can do better. Your call. (Steve Johnson via Unsplash/)
Back in the good old days of the early 2000s, every device had one charger. Some gadgets were a little more practical and used one of a variety of USB connections, but it almost felt like there were as many standards as manufacturers. Almost 20 years later, most of the industry is moving toward USB-C, and even Apple, known for doing its own thing, uses USB-C for its latest MacBooks and iPad Pros. Now, itā€™s possible to plug the same charger into your smartphone, tablet, laptop, and soon, Iā€™m sure, your toothbrush.
While this is largely a good thing, itā€™s not without pitfalls. Have you ever tried to charge your computer from a phone charger? Or an iPad from your computerā€™s USB port? It happens at a crawl. If you want to charge all your devices efficiently, you need to understand whatā€™s going on.
How charging works
Charging is a factor of three things you probably remember from high school: power (watts), current (amperes or milliamperes), and voltage (volts). An 87-watt MacBook Pro charger, for example, can provide 20.2 volts at 4.3 amperes (87 watts), 9 volts at 3 amperes (27 watts), or 5.2 volts at 2.4 amperes (12.5 watts).
In other words, simply multiply current and voltage together to get a chargerā€™s total power output. The higher that number is, the faster a charger will replenish your devices. If youā€™re wondering how to find this information on power supplies you own or are looking to buy, output options are written somewhere on most chargers.
Big devices like laptops have much larger batteries than smartphones and other small gadgets (a 15-inch MacBook Pro has a battery eight times as big and powerful as an iPhone X). So to fully charge a laptop in the same amount of time as a phone, youā€™d need a charger thatā€™s throwing around a lot more power.
So why donā€™t we just plug 1 million-watt chargers into our phones and have them charge instantly? Unfortunately, thereā€™s safety to consider: the more power involved, the more heat and stress it puts on device components. Even if you could generate 1 million wattsā€”and youā€™d need your own power plant to do soā€”it would only set your phone on fire, and you with it.
So, in an effort to get everyone on the same page, the USB standard limits charging to certain ranges. For USB 1.0, it was 5 volts at 500 milliamperes for a maximum power of 2.5 watts. But USB Power Delivery (USB PD), a feature many USB-C devices support, complicates things by enabling ā€œfast charging.ā€ This means chargers with USB PD can generate between 0.5 and 100 watts by operating at 5, 9, 15, or 20 volts, and between 100 milliamperes and 5 amperes.
Now, even though a USB-C charger may support it, you canā€™t just shoot 100 watts straight into your phone and expect it to work. Devices have built-in limits and will reduce the current so theyā€™ll only draw as much power as theyā€™re capable of handling. So if you plug your MacBook into its charger, itā€™ll use the full 87 watts. Plug a smartphone in, however, and it will use one of the lower-power options. Thatā€™s why itā€™s possible to charge your smartphone off your computerā€™s charger, but it takes forever to fuel up your computer with your smartphoneā€™s charger.
Finding the best charger
What? You havenā€™t read whatā€™s on your charger before? (Harry Guinness/)
Knowing what voltages a charger supports is easy, but finding the right one for a specific device can be a little more complicated. Obviously, the charger that comes with a product will work, but that doesnā€™t mean itā€™s the best option. Apple ships their latest iPhone with a 5-watt charger, but it will charge quickest with one that puts out at least 18 watts, as long as you have a USB-C-to-Lightning cable. And donā€™t worryā€”using a higher-voltage charger will not fry your phoneā€™s battery, since the phone controls the amount of power it draws, not the charger.
Further complicating things, while USB PD is the official USB fast-charging standard, manufacturers including Qualcomm, OnePlus, and Huawei have each developed their own. For example, a OnePlus phone will charge from any USB-C charger, but will charge significantly faster if you use a OnePlus charger that supports the companyā€™s own standard, WarpCharge 30.
Thereā€™s also the financial aspect to consider: a lower-powered charger will replenish a device that supports a higher-powered one, only slower; whereas a higher-powered charger wonā€™t charge devices with lower power requirements any faster. The latter will, however, cost more.
Hereā€™s an exampleā€”a 15-inch MacBook Pro will charge fastest with an 87-watt charger (which itā€™s typically sold with), although it will charge well enough with a 61-watt one. On the other hand, a 13-inch MacBook Pro will charge at the same speed with either the 61-watt charger it comes with or an 87-watt one. In short: try to charge the 15-inch laptop with a lower-powered charger, and itā€™ll replenish slower, but try to speed up the 13-inch MacBookā€™s charging time by buying the 87-watt power supply and you just spent $79 instead of $69.
All the information on what power options will charge a given device quickest is written somewhere in its product manual, but if youā€™re anything like me, most of those ended up in the bin. This means Google is probably your best friend. Search for things like ā€œ[phone model] fast charge specā€ or ā€œ[computer model] power requirements,ā€ and youā€™ll either find a useful article or the companyā€™s own specifications documents.
Tips on effectively charging your devices
Different chargers for Android phones and iPhones? Thatā€™s so ten years ago! (Steve Johnson via Unsplash/)
Now that weā€™ve covered whatā€™s going on when you charge your devices, letā€™s recap how to do it most efficiently.
Use the right charger
Most devices ship with the best charger for them, especially laptops and phones made by any company that trumpets the benefits of fast charging in their press materials. There are, however, a few exceptions (looking at you, Apple). When you get a new device, itā€™s worth doing a little research to see if the manufacturer is providing the fastest charger, or if thereā€™s a better option out there.
Be careful with generic chargers
If youā€™re replacing a first-party charger with a generic third-party one, be careful and make sure to buy a reputable brand from a reputable store. USB power devices have a long history of being counterfeited, and if you end up with one, the best-case scenario is that it probably wonā€™t operate as well as it claims to. At worst, it could set your house on fire.
Use a compatible charger if your device has a proprietary fast-charge standard
USB PD is now the most widely supported fast-charge standard, and even some others, like Qualcommā€™s QuickCharge, are compatible with many manufacturersā€™ devices. However, a few companies, like LG, Huawei, and OnePlus, still use their own standards that will work best with their devices. If your device is one of those, make sure to use the proprietary charger.
Wireless charging is a trade-off
Although wireless charging is getting better, the best wired charger for your device will still do a better job juicing up your phone as fast as possible. But if you just canā€™t go back to a wired life, there are very good options out there that may be compatible with your device.

Donā€™t miss: Selecting the perfect U.Ok. provider | Finest Android telephones you should buy within the U.Ok.
Regardless of being the smallest available in the market, Three is owned by one of many worldā€™s largest multinational conglomerates, CK Hutchison, and itā€™s this backing which is permitting it to shake up the market.

Shutterstock Our smartphones are extra succesful than ever, and the evolution of smartphone expertise has been completely fantastic to witness. It is not simply the telephones themselves which have gotten higher, sooner, and stronger ā€” ā€¦
Its 4G community was initially deliberate to function within the 800MHz spectrum, however Three was additionally granted license by the regulator in 2012 to function in a part of the 1800MHz obtained via the creation of EE. Though restricted in capability, the 800MHz help means Threeā€™s indoor and lengthy distance 4G protection holds up properly.
Whereas its rival networks all launched 4G companies at a premium to prospects earlier than virtually dropping 3G contracts of their entirety, Three selected to tease its delayed community with a marketing campaign providing LTE to all prospects at no additional premium. The providerā€™s early All You Can Eat knowledge proposition drew in hundreds of thousands of consumers searching for limitless knowledge.
4G is customary throughout all of the U.Ok.ā€™s networks lately, however Three nonetheless affords some compelling offers for the information hungry client.

Oppo Find X may have the biggest screen-to-body ratio yet (Updated June 18) Oppo Update (06/18): A post on Oppoā€™s Weibo account (via GSMArena) hints very strongly that the Find X may have a 93.8 percent screen-to-body ratio, with almost no bezel at all. It beats the just announced Vivo Nex, which has a 91.24 percent screen-to-body ratio. In addition, a brief trailer that was shown on TV in China this weekend may indicate that the Oppo Find X has front and rear cameras that rise up from the top of the phone, so that they stay completely hidden when not in use. Original article (06/12): The Oppo Find X makes us excited, if only based on how good Oppoā€™s last flagships were back in 2014. Back then, we got the Find 7 with its QHD screen, super-fast charging, and 50MP images from a 13MP sensor. We also got the N-series which came with a camera on a swivel and rear touch panel gestures. Weā€™ve gathered the latest rumors and nuggets of information on the Find X here all in one place. Oppo Find X specs The Snapdragon 845 processor by Qualcomm We canā€™t expect anything but the Snapdragon 845 in the new flagship, as Oppo has traditionally used Qualcomm silicon in its flagships. It used MediaTek chips for devices like the R15, but the Taiwanese silicon giant doesnā€™t have a bona fide flagship chip this year. In the memory department, 6GB to 8GB of RAM has become a top-tier option for the likes of OnePlus and Xiaomi. Donā€™t be surprised to see this much RAM in the new Oppo phone too. Related Articles OnePlus 6 problems and how to fix them OnePlus knocked it out of the park once again with its latest flagship offering. The OnePlus 6 has everything the company is known for, with premium specifications, design, and software, all available at a price severely ā€¦ Hands-on: The Asus ROG gaming phone is a beast Asus isn't known for its high-end phones. Traditionally, they've skirted the mid-range and attempted to bring a lot of value to the consumer at a lower price. That changed a bit with the ZenFone 5Z, ā€¦ Lending credence to the processor and RAM figures is a report from Playfuldroid. The outlet spotted apparent Oppo Find X specs on the TENAA telecoms authority website (the pages have since been pulled). Among the more notable details are a 2.8GHz octa-core processor ā€” the same clock speed and core count as the SD845 ā€” and 8GB of RAM. The report also claims the phone will have a 6.4-inch 2,340 x 1,080 AMOLED screen and a 3,645mAh battery. More recently, we saw a leaked image on Weibo claiming the phone would have a Snapdragon 845, 8GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage. Could we be looking at a base model and a variant with double the space? To further corroborate these specs, Twitter user @IshanAgarwal24 recently tweeted a leaked spec sheet for the Oppo Find X. The information suggests the phone will house Snapdragon 845 chipset, 8GB of RAM, a 16MP/20MP dual camera setup, and a 25MP selfie shooter. Several other details were hinted at, such as a 6.4-inch 2,340 x 1,080 display, 128GB of storage, f/2.0 apertures for all three cameras, dual-SIM connectivity, NFC support, and a 3,730mAh battery. The Find X is said to be 9.6mm thick. So, here are the full official specification of the Oppo Find X. A 25MP Selfie Camera, 20+16MP Cameras at the rear and a 6.4inch screen! All present in a not so big body!#Oppo#OppoFindX#FindX pic.twitter.com/qgWUNYl7kL ā€” Ishan Agarwal (@IshanAgarwal24) June 13, 2018 If this is the real deal, it raises a few questions about the Find X, starting with the display. The 2,340 x 1,080 resolution isnā€™t a standard resolution (even for 18:9 displays), which means we could potentially see a display notch. Then thereā€™s the f/2.0 aperture for all the cameras, suggesting Oppo isnā€™t using a telephoto shooter on the back (telephoto cameras usually have smaller apertures). Finally, the 128GB storage claim probably points to a few storage options, as previous leaks suggest either 128GB or 256GB of space. Oppo Find X: More like fastest charging Oppo previously showed off Super VOOC Flash Charge technology back in 2016, claiming a full charge in 15 minutes, albeit for a 2,500mAh battery. So itā€™s reasonable to assume this tech has finally matured enough to land in the flagship. We canā€™t expect a 15 minute charge with a more than 3,600mAh battery, but even half an hour or 45 minutes would be a welcome improvement. In fact, Qualcommā€™s own Quick Charge 4 Plus touts 50 percent capacity in 15 minutes for a 2,750mAh battery. Oppo Find X camera The Playfuldroid report also picked up apparent camera details, in the form of a 16MP and 20MP rear camera combo and a 25MP front-facing shooter. At MWC last year, the company showed off unique 5x zoom capabilities, enabled by an elaborate prism-based setup. Thereā€™s no word if this tech is in the Oppo Find X, but one teaser definitely suggests a prism is coming. In any case, hereā€™s hoping for something more innovative than a standard 2x telephoto camera. Editor's Pick Best phones with dual cameras at different price points Loads of phones come with dual cameras these days. The technology has almost become standard on high-end smartphones, with companies like Samsung, LG, and Huawei all using it. Additionally, there are also plenty of budget-friendly ā€¦ As for the 25MP selfie shooter, several brands have adopted pixel binning on the front camera (for better low-light shots), necessitating a higher resolution sensor. Hereā€™s to Oppo using the high-res front shooter for more than just bragging rights. The Chinese brand used MWC 2016 to show off a new sensor-based optical image stabilization solution (as opposed to conventional lens-based systems). This solution promises lower power consumption and faster, more precise stabilization. Who knows, the company may even have improved on the solution since then. Again, we donā€™t know for sure if this will come to the Oppo Find X. Oppo Find X design Weibo.com/oppo This is the big question. Weā€™ve seen a claimed snap of the back of the phone via Weibo, showing off a rather starry cover and no rear fingerprint scanner, which means it could have a traditional front-mounted scanner or an under-display scanner. We havenā€™t seen the front of the device, but hereā€™s hoping it doesnā€™t have a notch. Then again, we wouldnā€™t mind the notch if it were used for facial recognition sensors (instead of just accommodating an earpiece and camera). Samsung is also supplying Oppo with curved OLED screens, according to Korean publication The Bell. The article notes Oppo is set to release a phone with a curved OLED screen as early as next month, but didnā€™t say if this is indeed the Find X. Oppo Find X software The Oppo F5. That Playfuldroid article also claims Android 8.1 Oreo is the operating system on board, making for the latest publicly available release. Oppo traditionally adds its ColorOS skin atop Android, delivering additional features to the platform. More recently, ColorOS gained Apple- and webOS-inspired gestures, a Xiaomi-style quick ball menu, screen recording, and smart photo categorization and search. Oppo Find X price and release date The Oppo R15 Pro. Oppoā€™s choice of Paris as the city to launch the Find X in makes it clear this is a global release. Weā€™re still expecting China to be part of the first wave of countries, and India has to be in the running too. The Chinese brand is also a sponsor of the FC Barcelona football team and, when combined with news about a Spanish foray, the Oppo Find X could be in for a European launch. We donā€™t know when the Oppo Find X will be released, but The Bellā€˜s report notes Oppo is releasing a curved OLED device in July or August. Again, we donā€™t know if this is the Find X, but a June reveal and July or August release sounds plausible. Editor's Pick Android smartphones with the best battery life (March 2018) Some people might think that the most important feature in a smartphone is its display size. Others believe it comes down to a phone's processor performance, or the amount of RAM, or how much storage ā€¦ As for a price, the company doesnā€™t take the affordable route with its upper tier phones, never mind its flagships. I wouldnā€™t be surprised if itā€™s more expensive than the Xiaomi Mi 8 and OnePlus 6. For the record, the Find 7 had a $599 launch price and the Oppo N3 had a $649 price. That was over three years ago, and everyone in the industry has adopted higher prices for their flagships. Heck, even Xiaomiā€™s Mi 8 has a slightly higher starting price of 2,699 yuan (~$421), versus the Mi 6ā€˜s 2,499 yuan (~$390) entry-level price tag. What do you want to see in the Oppo Find X? Do you think itā€™ll have a notch? Let us know in the comments section below. , via Android Authority http://bit.ly/2JFkji1
