#1-2_otogiri_tobi/ hallucinations on the boundary line
prev: 1-1 // next 1-3
-----
Tobi lay on the bed in his room, looking at a paperback book. The book’s title was Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? It seemed to be a translation of an American sci-fi novel.
The facility’s recreation room had three steel racks, lined with books donated by past residents. The residents were free to read them as they liked. Elementary and middle school kids always scrambled for the popular books, so Tobi read exclusively unpopular books to kill time.
Well, he thought he was reading. When he saw words he didn't know, he looked them up in the dictionary. Thanks to that, he’d memorized most kanji, but for some reason the contents never stuck in his brain. A little while after finishing, he forgot most of it.
Tobi looked at his watch. 9:56 PM. In the facility, lights out was at 10 PM for middle students, so there were 4 minutes left. Plenty of residents regularly used the convenient excuse of ‘wanting to study’ to postpone the lights out time, but Tobi never did.
“Gonna go sleepytime soon, Tobi?”Âč
Baku laughed from the floor.
“What’re you talking about, sleepytime. I‘m not a kid.”
Âč Baku uses 'onemu', which is children's talk for going to bed. think beddy-bye, sleepytime, night night, etc.
Tobi put the book by his pillow. This was originally a two-person room, so there were two beds. But in truth, the room belonged only to him.
It wasn't like he’d asked to live alone. It had once been a two-person room too. The other person had gotten annoyed, and appealed to the staff. They couldn't stand sharing a room with Otogiri Tobi, they’d said.
“If you ask me, an eighth grader is a kid among kids, you know?”
Tobi stuck his feet out from the bed and stepped lightly on Baku.
“Ow. stop that, Tobi, you.”
“Baku’s even younger than me. So wouldn’t that make you even more of a kid?”
“I‘m an exception. ‘Special’, you might say. I‘m exceptional. Outstanding even. Oi, stop it Tobi. if you keep stepping on me like that, I‘ll lose my shape. What’re you gonna do then? Hey
”
After kicking him for a while, Tobi felt satisfied, so he stopped stepping on Baku. he turned off the lights, and lay down on the bed once again.
Lights out was at 11 PM for high schoolers, and there were residents that used homework or studying as an excuse to stay up late too. The walls and doors weren’t that thick at all. To nights at the facility, quietness was a foreign concept.
Tobi wrapped the blanket around his body and lay on his side.
“Are you thinking about that girl, Tobi?”
“I‘m not thinking about her at all.”
Tobi wanted to click his tongue in annoyance.
“She hadn’t even entered my head till you mentioned her.”
“Really? That’s fishy.”
“Seriously.”ÂČ ÂČ the same phrasing as Shiratama used last chapter
The words came out of his mouth nonchalantly. It definitely wasn't because he was thinking about that girl.
“...Really.”
As Tobi corrected himself, Baku laughed with a kukuku.
“She’s a strange woman isn’t she?”
“Don’t call her a woman.”
“Well, she is a woman isn't she.”
“That’s true
”
“You were thinking weren’t you, about her. I mean, that happened. Of course it’d be on your mind.”
“Not really, it’s not on my mind at all.”
“Be honest already. Besides, even if you’re not interested, she on the other hand—”
“I‘m sleeping now. Could you be quiet?”
“Yeah ok, Tobi. Hope it won't be a sleepless night.”
Tobi closed his eyes and pretended to snore. Baku laughed again. He should mind his own business. Tobi wasn’t a bad sleeper.he could fall asleep right away. He wasn't thinking about the girl or anything. He didn't want to think about her, and yet he couldn't help but think of her.
“—I have a favor I'd like to ask of you, Otogiri-kun, so could I take this opportunity?”
At that, Shiratama had tucked in her chin slightly, and changed her tone strangely.
“Can you go out with me, as a friend?”
“......Huh?”
Tobi first tried to understand her request. Was it even a request? He didn't think it was a question.Âł Anyhow, Shiratama was waiting for an answer. That much was certain.
But how should he respond?
Tobi couldn't understand. “Eh—ah—uhh—” he senselessly repeated.
“Ah.”
Shiratama covered her mouth with her right hand.
“It’s a sudden request, so I‘m sorry if it’s a bother. I don’t mind if you don't respond right away.”
“Ah
 is that.. so.”
“Of course, if you’d like to respond now?”
“No, that’d— well
”
“Would you prefer later?”
“......I guess?”
“I understand.”
Shiratama closed her eyes, and breathed out a sigh.
“I'm glad I was able to tell you. My heart was pounding.”
Tobi’s heart was palpitating too. He couldn't help but feel like he was being given a raw deal.
“Then, Otogiri-kun, see you tomorrow.”
As if relieved after saying what she’d wanted to say, Shiratama bid farewell with a bow, and left as soon as all was in good order.
What’s with this person.
Right as Tobi thought this, Baku grumbled.
“What on earth was that?...”
In the end, he didn't get much sleep that night.
Of course, it was because of Shiratama Ryuuko.
Suddenly talking to him like that, and just as he’d wondered what she wanted, she’d said such a strange thing.
“Can you go out with me, as a friend?”
Taken by surprise, Tobi had been bewildered. Otherwise, he would have given some kind of response on the spot. That’s what he thought. Like, if a stranger suddenly said, ‘Won’t you dance with me?’ the answer would be ‘No’. A firm rejection.
If only he’d refused.
Said, “No, I won’t.”
The reason why Tobi hadn’t answered immediately, was because he was perplexed.
On top of that, the way Shiratama had presented the question was also a bit peculiar.
“As a friend”
That part was fine. It was the other part.
“Can you go out with me?”
Wasn’t that a bit weird? Was Tobi the weird one for thinking that was weird? Maybe he was thinking about it too hard. If it were just the former part, “Can you go out with me”, that go out had distinct connotations. However, he couldn’t just ignore the latter part. Shiratama had asserted that it was ‘as a friend’. In that case, that was how he should interpret it.
Long story short, what Shiratama said was merely “Let’s be friends.”
Shiratama’s way of speaking was also pretty distinctive, mixing in keigo, even though they were in the same grade. He probably shouldn’t let that lead him astray. It seemed like Shiratama simply wanted to be friends with Tobi.
Therein lay the problem.
Friends with Otogiri Tobi?
Why, again?
Then, there was an even bigger, rather serious problem.
Shiratama Ryuuko could hear Baku’s voice.
When he went to school with no sleep, the teacher with the black-rimmed glasses glared at him before the school gates. This teacher always wore a tight suit that fit exactly. And exactly this morning, Tobi did not want to be called on by the teacher with the black-rimmed glasses. Tobi struck first, and bowed his head quickly.
“Good morning, teacher.”
“...O-Oh. Good morning.”
The teacher with the black-rimmed glasses was clearly taken aback. He’d been all up in his hair every morning since first year, but nothing had happened when Tobi greeted him. He’d just answered “Good morning.” Had this been the correct thing to do?
“What’s gotten into you?”
Baku asked him as he changed his shoes at the shoe box.
“Who knows. I don't think anything has gotten into me though?”
“Is this what they call a change of heart? What set this off, huh?”
“You’re overreacting

”
His indoor shoes were a bit tight. Had his feet grown? As his body grew, his clothes didn’t fit anymore. Buying replacements was painfully expensive.
As he turned toward the classroom a little dejectedly, a long haired female student showed up from the shadow of the shoe box. Tobi unconsciously took a step back.
“Shi-Shiratama-san.”
“Good morning, Otogiri-kun.”
Again with that gaze. Shiratama stared steadily, straight atTobi.
“Wha-what?”
Tobi looked down and covered the bottom of his face with his arm.
“Do you need something? So early in the morning
.”
“Actually, I was lying in wait for you here.”
“Eh
W-why?”
“Didn’t I tell you, yesterday?”
“......Yeah.”
“I wanted to know your answer.”
“Tha—”
“Tha?”
“...ats
”
Suddenly, the phrase “to make your eyes white and black” popped into Tobi’s head. He’d looked it up in the dictionary sometime before. It didn’t mean that the eyes literally turned white and black, but that the eyeballs were darting around violently. Right now, Tobi’s eyeballs were having a terribly busy workout. He felt faint.
Several students from their class came to the shoe box, whispering something to each other as they changed their shoes. They seemed to be eyeing Shiratama and Tobi’s situation. Like, “Woah, what’re they doing?” or something. Good grief. To be honest, the person in question, Tobi himself, was also thinking, What are we doing?
“Oh!”
On top of that, complicating matters, the passing janitor had called out to them. The situation devolved steadily into chaos.
“Otogiri-kun, good morning. What’re you doing there, Shiratama-san?”
Shiratama turned to look at the janitor, and bowed politely.
“Good morning. Thank you for the hard work, so early in the morning.”
“Thank you.”
Haizaki smiled bashfully. He was holding a cardboard box. What was inside? Whatever it was, Tobi wasn’t interested.
That didn't seem to be the case for Shiratama.
“That looks heavy. Shall I help you?”
“No, no. Heavens, no!”
Haizaki shook his head vigorously. His thin slitted eyes went round.
“It’s completely fine. This is my job, after all. I‘m here to work, and Shiratama-san comes to school to study.”
“You know, I‘m pretty strong!”
Shiratama lifted her right arm and bent it at a right angle. They were thin arms. Too thin. Were they really strong arms? Tobi didn’t think they were. The story didn't seem to add up either. Even if Shiratama had super strength, it didn't matter. Haizaki was carrying things around as part of his job; A middle schooler like Shiratama had no obligation to help him out. Haizaki had said it himself. Even Tobi, who Baku had called communicationally challenged, understood that much.
Shiratama might be a dangerous person.
The possibility had flickered through Tobi’s mind last night.
A proper middle school student would never ask to be friends with a classmate like Otogiri Tobi in the first place.
He wasn’t the type of person to let people get close; that he was aware of. Tobi wasn’t peppy. Nor was he kind. Nor was he interesting. He had a past that was hard to explain. He also had Baku, someone he couldn't talk to except when he was alone.
Besides, it seemed he was able to see things other people couldn't see.
If there was someone aside from him who was like that, what would he think?
Wouldn’t he consider that a dangerous person?
In other people’s eyes, Otogiri Tobi must be a dangerous person.
Trying to become friends with such a dangerous person, Shiratama Ryuuko must be pretty dangerous as well.
He felt the urge to run. He wanted to run, intensely. Shiratama was talking with Haizaki. Wasn't that his chance? That’s right. He should use the chance to escape.
Tobi tried to leave the scene. Even though he hid his footsteps, he was noticed.
“Oh-”
Shiratama grabbed his right arm. Near his wrist.
“No. don't go, Otogiri-kun. At least give me an answer.”
“...Wha?” Haizaki’s face twitched like he was flustered.
“Did I perhaps get in between something? Sorry, excuse me. Like, ‘get kicked by a horse!’ right?......”
Why’d he bring up horses? He’d read it in a book somewhere. There was a saying like that.
‘Someone who gets between a person’s romance should get bitten by a dog and die.’
For the dog part, ‘should just get kicked by a horse and die.’ was also an alternative.
It seemed like Haizaki had the wrong idea. Should he correct him? It didn't really matter. This wasn’t the time for that; Shiratama was still gripping his wrist.
Can you let go?
Tobi tried to appeal with his eyes.
Apparently it didn't get through to her. Shiratama was tilting her head in curiosity. He was the curious one.
It couldn’t be helped. Making sure not to be too rough, Tobi shook Shiratama’s hand off.
“...Um. About that, how about
well
 we continue while walking, or
?” Tobi hesitantly suggested, and Shiratama nodded.
Should I run as fast as I can and shake her off? He considered this for a brief moment, but abandoned the thought. Shiratama fell into step on his left side.
“I would like to hear your response.”
“......Already? Isn’t it a bit too early?”
“Were you already in the middle of considering it?”
“Umm
 ‘considering it’, more like, well
uh

”
“You’re such an indirect guy,” Baku said with a sigh.
“Are you an indirect person?” Shiratama asked.
“I mean, he doesn't have a habit of verbalizing his own thoughts and feelings. People almost never talk to him anyway.”
“What about with you?”
“I‘m different. That said, even to me there’s moments where I‘m like ‘ get it!’, or 'put yourself in his shoes!'”
“Like, in order to get on the same page?”
“Something like that.”
“......Um, excuse me”
Tobi hit his first against his forehead. His head was starting to hurt.
“Could you not talk like it's normal? From other people's point of view, Shiratama-san just sounds like she's mumbling to herself
”
“I‘m sorry, I couldn't help myself.”
Shiratama dipped her head slightly.
“But wouldn't they think I was talking with you, Otogiri-kun? Or maybe I was one-sidedly talking to you.”
“That would be strange in its own right.”
“Then please talk with me. If you did so, that would settle everything.”
“......Aren't I talking with you already?”
“By the way, what’s your answer to that question?”
“.....Like I said, it's too early

”
Tobi was suddenly aware of his worsening posture. He couldn't help but feel they were attracting the attention of the passing students in the hallway.
“Anyway
”
Or rather, they were definitely attracting attention. It was because of Shiratama. Of course it was.
“Why?”
As Tobi asked, Shiratama blinked rapidly.
“What do you mean by why?”
“...Like, wanting to be friends with me. Your reason, or well, your motive.”
“That’s because Otogiri-kun is Otogiri-kun.”
“Hah? What do you mean
?”
“Do I need to explain?”
“If possible. If you could tell me, in a way even I can understand
”
“Let you understand”
Shiratama nodded, furrowed her brows a bit and stopped in her tracks, pondering.
A bit late, Tobi took a step more and stopped as well.
Shiratama was staring at Tobi. It was that gaze, the one that seemed to seize you and not let go.
“Could I take a few minutes of your time? If it's alright with you, today’s lunch break. I can’t talk about this topic unless there’s no one nearby.”
Tobi was weak against that gaze. It was bothersome; he couldn't just ignore it. He couldn't look away.
“......Alright. I don't mind.”
That was all he could answer. What else was he supposed to do?
Right after meal time, the special classroom building was deserted. Tobi agreed to meet up with Shiratama at the external emergency stairs. As he sat on the railing of the landing between the second and third floor, Shiratama opened the door and climbed up.
Tobi felt a bit strange. It was because Shiratama wore a bag on her shoulder. It wasn’t the school’s standard schoolbag. Was it called a pochette? It was an even smaller bag.
“Hello.”
As Shiratama climbed up to the landing, she politely greeted him.
“Ah.. yea.”
Tobi nodded vaguely. Shiratama was so awfully polite, he was a bit taken aback.
“So, what was it again
 your, um
motive? The reason why Shiratama-san wants to be friends with me?”
“As they once said, the proof is in the pudding.”
“Well
yeah, that’s true, there is that kind of saying.”
“Therefore, I brought her along.”
“Brought along
?”
Tobi frowned. As far as he could see, Shiratama was alone. She hadn't brought anyone along.
Shiratama lifted her bag and opened it.
“Come on out, Chinurasha.”
Could it be that Shiratama was calling out to the pochette? If so, that would be pretty eccentric to say the least. He’d thought she was an oddball, but never imagined to this extent. Tobi was starting to get worried about Shiratama instead. In all senses of the word, was she okay?
Or maybe, there was some creature like a small animal inside the pochette. In that case that would be absurdly problematic behavior. You couldn't bring small animals to school. Even Tobi could understand that. But that seemed to be exactly what she had done.
Something crawled out of the pochette.
“Hm
”
Baku let out a small voice.
See?
It was a small animal.
For the creature, the inside of that pochette must have been cramped. At its size, it should have barely crammed in. However, it was quite fluffy, so maybe it could unexpectedly get into spaces it didn't look like it could fit.
Was it a cat? A kitten? That wasn't it, right? Hah, “right”, I mean, that wasn't it.
The creature had horns growing out of it. Obviously, cats didn't have horns. A small animal, with two horns—
Did that exist?
That kind of creature?
He didn’t think it was recorded in the animal field guide at the facility. Tobi had been to the local zoo several times for facility events. He didn't remember ever seeing a small animal with horns. Then again, it was possible such an animal inhabited some corner of the wide, wide world, just unbeknownst to him. Or maybe, it was a baby horned animal or something.
Right after the creature got out of the pochette, it began climbing up Shiratama’s body. It wasn't nimble, but it wasn't clumsy either. It seemed pretty used to the movement. After reaching Shiratama’s right shoulder, it turned to face Tobi.
Did it have eyes? He couldn't see them. Maybe they were buried in its fur? Despite that, he felt something like a gaze.
“Chinu, say hello.”
As Shiratama called out to it, the creature cocked its head. It may have tilted its head diagonally. And from within the fur, a tiny, extremely small mouth poked out.
“Yu—”
“Uyu—”
“Kuchyu—”
Tobi heard something like that. Were they the creature’s cries?
“......Hi.”
Tobi bowed his head without thinking.
Shiratama scratched Chinu—or Chinurasha’s— chin with a finger.
“Good girl.”
“Oi, Tobi—” Baku whispered.
“No way you haven't noticed, right?”
“...Eh? What?”
“That thing’s not normal.”
“Well, it
it seems to be a rare animal. It has horns and everything.”
“That’s not it.”
Baku seemed irritated. Aside from being able to talk to Tobi, Baku was basically just a large backpack. However, he sometimes opened all by himself when he got unruly. It wasn’t like the zipper unzipped.Tobi seemed to be the only one who could see it, but it was like the zipper part turned into a mouth and opened.
Just like right now.
“Don't you understand, Tobi?! You’re such a dense guy, dammit!”
Baku spoke, his mouth snapping open and shut. He seemed more agitated than annoyed now.
“Chinu is”
Shiratama brought her right shoulder up and rubbed her cheek against Chinu.
“Something only I can see.”
“......But—”
He could see it.
Tobi could. Clear as day.
Chinu seemed quite attached to Shiratama. Chinu rubbed her head against Shiratama’s cheek as well, and narrowed her eyes in content. She was letting out low cries of “hyuru—”, “yuu—”, “uu—”, or rather, they seemed to spill out of her uncontrollably. Chinu’s horns struck Shiratama, but it didn't seem to cause pain. At least, Shiratama wasn't in any pain. Maybe the horns weren’t hard enough to pierce skin.
“We’re the same!” Baku spat.
He seemed pretty unenthused about it. Or maybe, Baku hadn't come to grips with it either.
“Tobi, you were the only one who could hear my voice. And Shiratama Ryuuko was the only one who could see Chinurasha’s form. It’s not totally the same but it’s similar, isn't it?!”
“...So— Shiratama-san can hear Baku’s voice, and I can see Chinu.”
“That’s right.”
“Hn?”
Tobi furrowed his brows. He brought his fist against his forehead.
“...So, this is—What does this mean? Huh

? What is.. what’s happening
.”
“Honestly, I have no idea either,” Shiratama said nonchalantly.
“I had noticed a while back that Otogiri-kun was talking to Baku-chan. Because I could hear Baku-chan’s voice. Otogiri-kun and I were the only ones who could hear Baku-chan’s voice. I thought that had to mean something special.”
“......Special—”
Tobi shook his head helplessly.
“I mean, it might just be abnormal
”
“Me and Otogiri-kun are the only ones who are abnormal?”
“Well
it’s more plausible than me and Shiratama-san being the only normal ones

”
“Just a second, Oi, Shiratama Ryuuko!”
Baku interjected, this time properly unenthused.
“Stop using -chan to call me!”
Shiratama looked at him blankly.
“Baku-chan?”
“That, yes, that! It makes my skin crawl. It does not fit me at all. It's gross!”
“I‘m sorry.”
As Shiratama tilted her eyebrows apologetically and bowed her head, Chinu made the same pose.
That’s cute

Tobi was startled as the thought flashed through his head.
By the way, the one he thought was ‘cute’ was Chinu. To be exact, the phenomenon of Shiratama and Chinu doing the same action at the same time.
“Then, ‘Baku-san’?” Shiratama asked.
“Ahemm!” Baku cleared his throat.
“Adding -san doesn’t feel too good either. How about you just call me Baku?”
“What’re you being so snobbish about
”
Tobi wanted to throw Baku away. Baku retorted back immediately.
“How am I being snobbish? I‘m saying it’s ok to call me without honorifics, you know. If anything, isn’t she the humble one. Huh, Shiratama Ryuuko?”
Shiratama nodded. Chinu did as well.
“Then I shall call you Baku.”
“Yeah, good. I‘m not good with formal stuff anyway.”
“I also wouldn't mind it if Baku called me ‘Ryuuko’.”
“Of course that’s what I'll do. ‘O-Ryuu’ or something might be good too. Mmm, it’s not bad. How about it?”
“I don’t particularly mind it, so do as you please.”
“Then it’s decided. O-Ryuu.”
“Yes.”
“......You guys are getting more and more chummy by the minute”
Maybe instead of throwing Baku away, Tobi should toss him over to Shiratama instead.
“Ohh? What? You jealous, Tobi?”
Baku laughed with a kekeke.
“Don’t worry man. Even if O-Ryuu has appeared, the relationship between you and me won't change.”
“Me and Baku’s
 rotten bond?”
“I said, it’s not rotten!”
“Then what kind of relationship is it

”
“The kinda thing that’s tasteless to say out loud. If I had to say, ‘partners’?”
“Chinurasha and I are also like partners.”
Shiramata smiled and looked at Chinu
“Right?”
“She doesn’t talk to me like Bake does to you, but she stays by my side. Chinu and I have always been together.”
“...Just asking, if I hadn’t been able to see Chinu, what were you going to do, Shiratama-san?”
“Then I would definitely—”
Shiratama pursed her lips and puffed out her cheeks a little.
“I guess you could only call that a tricky situation. A poor middle school student, acting as if there were a little animal there
”
“Isn’t it a relief that I could see Chinu
.”
“To be honest, it was a gamble. But I thought, ‘maybe Otogiri-kun could see it as well’.”
“Everything worked out in the end didn't it?” Baku said breezily.
But if Tobi had been in Shiratama’s shoes, he probably wouldn't have taken such a gamble.
Maybe there’s something wrong with me.
Tobi had questioned that countless times. No matter how you thought about it, a backpack talking to you was not normal.
He could hear things others couldn't hear.
He could see things he shouldn't have been able to see.
Were these delusions? Maybe there were abnormalities with his brain. Maybe he had some mental illness. Maybe he should get it checked out by a doctor, he’d gone as far as thinking.
Tobi suddenly felt weak. He felt like he was gonna slip from the railing. Why was he so tired? He suddenly felt like he understood.
It’s not just me.
Tobi was relieved. It wasn't an illusion.
Baku was there.
He hadn’t been a figment of Tobi’s imagination.
He really existed.
“...Baku’s voice, which I could hear, Shiratama-san can hear too. Chinu, which Shiratama-san could see, I can see too. Those things that other people don't seem to see—”
Then, those as well?
Tobi took the plunge and asked Shiratama.
“In that case
. Can Shiratama-san see them too? The ones that cling to people, the kind of weird
”
Shiratama met Tobi’s gaze firmly.
Then, she slowly nodded.

prev: 1-1 // next 1-3
Âł request vs question- the original japanese uses 敏いかけ versus èłȘ敏, both generally meaning ‘question’. From what I gather, 敏いかけ refers to a question that asks how a person feels (no correct answer), while èłȘ敏 is a question that asks for a correct answer, like a math question.
Shiratama says いい歐, which means 'good child' (gender neutral). Chinu doesn't talk and they don't use gendered pronouns for it so I'm going to take a gamble and say that Chinu (as Shiratama's shadow) is female too. will see how this holds up in the future.

trick or treat!!!
Happy Halloween, Anon!!!
The closest I have to a Halloween special is a series of snippets I kind of wandered into writing, but they seem pretty fitting! These are from World Walker: Aftershocks, which is really a bunch of scenes made to figure out where the characters are going to end up.
This involves no World Walker or canon bnha spoilers, and is very sparsely edited. DimensionTravel!Izuku hunts ghosts with this background character below the cut, inspired by Buzzfeed Unsolved, YUTS, and Game Changer. Interviewer OCs are named Ran, Myuki, Kaito, and Tatsuya. Cryptid's PR guy is named Dai.
Tw: ghosts and related topics.
Cryptid ducks under the doorway.
Ran visibly falters.
Cryptid's agency did all of the communication with them, supposedly because Cryptid himself is a workaholic who handles emergencies not just here, but also wherever else he disappears to. He also has a tendency to choose interviews near emergencies that unfold in a predictable future for him and a horrible surprise for everyone else, so apparently it's safer for everyone involved if he makes his own patrol schedule for the agency to work around. Dai from PR was lovely to talk to. They have no complaints.
But Dai from PR neglected to mention exactly what Cryptid is like in person. Cameras glitch out occasionally and secondhand accounts grow either poetic or lack detail, so they had no real warning about this. Tatsuya is abruptly aware that the fanart is perhaps more accurate than photos of this hero, which would be funny if he were able to breathe right now.
Cryptid looks horrifying.
Unseen wind stirs green hair. His dark costume highlights the fact that his shadow pulls an echo of stars up from the floorboards, and the sharp teeth of his smile that forces his mouth open slightly. When he looks at them, a galaxy rests in his eyes.
He steps forward. There is something distinctly unnatural in the way those joints move.
Ran audibly inhales through her teeth.
The next step is better, then the next. Cryptid's back straightens and his mouth closes into something more human. The stars and eerie presence are packaged away, folded up and tucked into the hero like a coat left at the door. It makes being affected by an unfelt wind and possessing odd-bright eyes feel like any other quirk.
"Hello," Cryptid says kindly, stopping a fair distance away, which is greatly appreciated. He tucks his hands behind his back, posture unthreatening. "Are you Ran?"
"Yeah," she gulps. "Um. Your agency said we should do an interactive interview with you?"
"Dai has been very accommodating," Cryptid agrees serenely. "And the void stops screaming at me when it thinks I'm busy."
"Oh?" Ran asks, voice pitched just a touch higher than normal, but she's too good an interviewer to let that leading statement go. "What do you mean?"
"There's a version of me trying to swallow the sky in another universe, and the void wants me to watch." Cryptid gestures, shoulders now hunched to communicate lack of threat. "But moving around will help convince it that I'm busy, so I really do appreciate you all changing so much of your schedule to make this work."
"It's no problem," Ran says. Ironclad control returns, one of the reasons she was chosen for this activity. "I have a list of pre-interview topics here. Anything else you want to talk about or avoid can be added to the paperwork, and we will be including your agency in the editing process whenever your quirk is discussed."
Tatsuya continues unpacking equipment as Cryptid irons out their details.
They have two guests on the game show today. Both heroes were on their list of candidates, but after hearing Cryptid's situation, an idea was pitched. Adding in Exorcism: the Ghost Hero to this was a stroke of genius. It'll make an amazing special.
Onemu Shinya waits by the car, discussing things with her own interview team of Miyuki and Kaito.
Six people, two of which are heroes. Three, gods help them, are thrill-seekers. Tatsuya was the only person in the office who saw bargaining power for what it was when the crew was short one member. They are paying him a lot to film and make snarky commentary behind the camera. Life is good.
Neither of the heroes know what the schedule holds.
Then again, they probably know it'll be odd. Burnt Honest Tea sits halfway between a game show and news organization due to hiring more actors and comedians than journalists. Everyone here has some kind of past in the entertainment district. The employee-owned business model is a wreck. They do comedy. Humor. A little gossip, when it's lighthearted and everyone involved is fine with it getting aired, but that’s a rare one. Celebrity guests are more likely to get dumped in a room full of puppies than interviewed from an armchair.
They figured out a while ago that since heroes have licenses for public quirk use, they could hire a bunch of weirdos to conduct interviews in the most extreme places possible. This is legally and logistically a nightmare. Crucially, it also sells really well because nobody else is willing to make a whole business around that model.
It takes a while for set-up to finish, and the heroes are brought to the front of the eerie brick building. It likely has been abandoned for longer than anyone here has been alive.
Probably.
Their two guests are odd enough that Tatsuya cant help but suspect otherwise. He suggested the question during one of the meetings and got shot down, though.
The two heroes wait patiently by the door as set up finishes.
Cameras and mics checked, lights on, introductions finished, and ground rules reiterated.
Filming starts.
“So what are we doing?” Exorcist asks, and Tatsuya winces preemptively. She has to suspect they’re going-
"Ghost hunting," Ran says.
Exorcism closes her eyes, and Cryptid nods thoughtfully before sticking his entire arm into a circle of blazing starlight. He pulls out a pair of gloves, and tugs off his own, revealing what looks like tattoos underneath.
Exorcism sighs, eyes still closed. "You can punch ghosts now, can't you?"
"I can punch ghosts," Cryptid agrees sagely as he puts on the new gloves, then holds up a cautious hand. "...Will it launch your soul out of your body if you touch these?"
Exorcism high-fives him.
"Guess not."
Tatsuya just knows today is going to be great.
-
"Hello," Cryptid says to the hallway, exactly as he greeted Ran earlier. It makes the underlying message clearer - don't be scared, I will not harm you, I know I am frightening and promise not to move too fast or speak too loudly. "I don't have any dominion over life and death, but we can speak if you'd like."
"You're very kind," Exorcism tells him with a pat to the back, then stomps past him into the hallway with Kaito and Miyuki on her heels. "Hey, ghosts! If you got a problem, now's the time to speak up!"
Unearthly screeching fills the building.
"Get their ass," Cryptid says, completely straight-faced. A door slams down the hall, and Kaito screams. Cryptid looks more alarmed at the scream than the haunted door.
"Hey, friend!" Exorcism yells in the same instant. "Ooh, you've got vibes. Where's that shirt from? It's cute."
"So," Cryptid says as he turns to Ran and Tatsuya, "shall we?"
"This was such a mistake," Tatsuya says. Ran shoots him a look that disagrees, and he zooms in on it just to be petty.
-
Exorcism considers the door, then turns to the empty space to her left with a raised eyebrow. She's gone a little translucent.
"Sure," she tells the patch of air. Then, "this is your local service announcement; big noise incoming."
"Go for it," Cryptid says distractedly as he pokes at a ratty, bug-infested curtain. It blocks off a corner of secrets Tatsuya has zero interest in. He is, unfortunately, the only person to feel this way. Ran gestures at him. It's a loving one. The kind that implies she will kill him in his sleep if he misses whatever bullshit their local Wikipedia-classified cryptid is about to pull.
It's fine. He's not in charge of filming Exorcism.
That hero is busy counting down her big noise out loud. It's very appreciated. Tatsuya has plenty of time to brace, so the abrupt crash of wooden planks is almost comfortable. He gives it a three-count before glancing back.
Exorcism tosses aside a piece of the door she just kicked in. She turns around to scan them all for injuries, with only a glance into the whole new room of horrors she just uncorked for their miserable little field trip. Then again, she's a hero known to get information from ghosts. This is her home turf.
Tatsuya flinches when Kaito lurches back from the broken doorway, face ashen.
Exorcism pauses.
She leans back, peering inside for a second assessment of whatever she unleashed.
"Hm," she says, fully awake for the very first time. Tatsuya's stomach flips upside-down.
"What's up?" Cryptid asks over from where he's placing a line of ginger candies under the most cursed piece of furniture to ever exist. Tatsuya isn't the faintest bit religious, superstitious, or even faintly curious about these kinds of things, but even he knows that broken chair has some seriously bad vibes. If they set an apple on it, that fruit would definitely rot in seconds. It is extremely unnerving. Ran hovers over Cryptid's shoulder as the hero happily arranges some kind of offering, torn between her own curiosity and nausea.
"This isn't mine to deal with," Exorcism says, brushing a hand over the wall. The shadows under her hand glitch out in real-time and is honestly the weirdest thing Tatsuya has seen in his life.
He holds his camera steady and exchanges a look with Kaito. Miyuki wanders over to serenely hold up what looks to be a Geiger counter. The little box ticks in a slow but uneven little pattern until she presses it to the wall.
The ticking turns slightly chime-like, then stops.
Tatsuya is fairly sure this isn't supposed to happen, but his science knowledge levels out at baking soda and vinegar. Miyuki, who has the kind of brain that saw her through engineering at Waseda until she decided it didn't spark joy, looks personally affronted.
"Ah," Cryptid says, hesitantly approaching. "Yeah, that'd be me. Thanks for catching it."
Tatsuya is very nervous about how Cryptid seems to be using Exorcism as a meat shield against the wall, until he notices that Cryptid isn't actually avoiding the wall at all.
Miyuki, with her massive brainpower, picks up on the source of his nerves as well. It's probably easier for her, since she seems to be the epicenter.
She looks at the dead silent box she is currently pressing into the wall.
The wall shivers hypnotically.
"Don't," Cryptid murmurs. It's unclear who he's talking to. "I did not make a deal with you to punch ghosts so you could-"
Exorcist swipes the box from Miyuki and tosses it to Cryptid, who yelps, fumbles, and catches it. The freshly returned ticking halts the second he has both hands on it. Instead, there's just one, constant, note.
Like a dial tone.
Cryptid stares at it in betrayal.
"Uh, so-" Ran clears her throat. "Are you doin' alright, buddy?"
"I am feeling very grateful for those NDAs," is all Cryptid says. "Um. Anyway. This is normal?"
He doesn't sound very sure.
"Kid," Exorcism sighs.
"It's completely expected," Cryptid hisses at her desperately.
"I'm drinking buddies with Eraser," Exorcism says, and Cryptid seems to deflate.
"Okay, so it might be normal but I honestly stopped trying to track what my quirk changes about me when I was so much shorter than this." Cryptid sighs, dial-tone box now clutched to his chest. It seems to be making the screaming note almost musical in an unearthly way. The realization of how that noise is shaping into an echo of a heartbeat raises hair on the back of Tatsuya's neck.
"That's messed up," Kaito tells him gently. "Aren't heroes supposed to be really good at using their quirks?"
Cryptid snorts. "That is a very long discussion nobody here except maybe Exorcism would enjoy having. Let's just say my quirk is the ability to skydive through an Old God, but testing limits weakens the barrier between my existence and its control?"
Exorcism pats him on the shoulder, and something like understanding seems to pass between them.
Something breaks in the room behind Tatsuya.
Every single member of their unfortunate little filming party is in this room, along with both their heroes.
"Let's go meet the neighbors," Exorcism decides, and leader her two adrenaline junkies away. It leaves Tatsuya in this room with his local cryptid and bad influence. Ran, despite getting them all into this mess of an interview, jumps slightly when Exorcism yells, "hey, friend!" loud enough to be heard through the wall.
Cryptid seems more interested in the fact that his cursed little offering has disappeared from the chair. Ran huddles after him.
"You are so weird," Tatsuya tells the hero gently.
"Yeah, well." Cryptid shrugs and pats Ran's white knuckles, which are currently clenched in his costume jacket. "Unknowable things aren't bad. Humans fear them, because a problem without definition is a problem that can't be controlled."
The way he says it separates them into two groups - humans, and whatever he is - which inspires the same curiosity Tatsuya feels when looking down from a cliff or skyscraper window. He can appreciate the danger mere inches away. He also wants to toss a paper plane at it.
"That's not how any of this works," Exorcism says through a yawn as she steps back through the broken-down door. The onmyouji pauses, noticing Ran breathing through her adrenaline. "Sorry, are you okay? Yes? Okay, just let us know."
"Maybe this was a bad idea," Cryptid murmurs as he pats the interviewer's shoulder. "We can go-"
"No," Ran interrupts in a wheeze. "I am having the time of my life. Let's keep rolling."
"Adrenaline junkie," Kaito says from the doorway, despite being sheet-white and grinning like a lunatic.
Cryptid and Exorcism exchange a look.
"You'll tell us the moment any of you want out," Cryptid says to the four of them. It's not a request so much as an order. "We're not going any further until I know everyone is completely fine with this."
A chorus or agreement rises, and Exorcism yawns.
"You were saying something," Ran says, once again showing that she's the only one here actually trained to host anything. "About how Cryptid is wrong about the nature of unknown things?"
Exorcism pauses, visibly trying to recall. "I was. Yeah. Basically, we fear what we don't understand for a very good reason."
"Doesn't mean you can't make a home out of it," Cryptid says.
"Are you not human?" Tatsuya asks, because it feels like they skipped over that little comment implying he isn't.
"In the way you're asking? Yeah. I was born human, I register to call-response quirk users, and I am capable of passing DNA tests in the right circumstances. In the way that matters-" Cryptid shrugs. "No. I'm a loophole."
Delightful.
That explains nothing.
"Could you explain what a loophole means in this context?" Ran asks. Miyuki smiles at her in a way that says, I could kiss you for keeping us on topic right now.
-
Blood runs down the wall.
"Huh," Cryptid says, completely unbothered by the many people now clinging to him. "That is one way to decorate. A bit too much red for me, personally, but it would look great in a children's hospital."
"Oh my God," Kaito garbles.
Exorcism muffles a yawn and pats him on the shoulder. "You okay?"
"Yeah," Kaito creaks. Cryptid takes their elbows and leads them to a very dusty chair, where he starts talking them through a breathing exercise. It works, and Tatsuya keeps his camera on the very haunted painting everyone seems to be ignoring.
"It's good that we brought heroes," Miyuki says serenely.
Cryptid pauses as he tries to figure out what to say to that, which gives Exorcism time to be distracted by the blood dripping down a wall from inside the picture frame. Tatsuya turns his camera just in time to catch her place both hands on the wet red wood, lean in, and lick that nasty, dust-clumped, haunted blood. She makes a face at what he guesses is the flavor, then walks right out the door.
Her team follows, hopefully to ask her what in the world she was just thinking. Ran watches them leave from the door. This is great until it leaves him with Cryptid and a bleeding painting.
"Oh, that's funny," Cryptid says under his breath. He claws open a section of thin air through the painting. Tatsuya's camera glitches at the bright-dark void, but Cryptid casually leans out to inspect something on the other side. Plastic crinkles. He tugs something out, stuffs it in his pocket, and pats something that sounds like fabric.
The air to his left starts bleeding.
Just.
The air.
Dripping red.
It falls to the ground since there's nothing for the liquid to cling to, leaving Tatsuya very freaked out by the spontaneous puddle of red on the floor.
"UH," Tatsuya says, then has to shove at Ran before she can poke it.
Cryptid laughs a little, in a quiet way that's oddly reassuring. Nobody laughs like that when they're panicked. "We're very safe. That one wasn't a ghost."
This is not helpful news. Well, it is helpful in that it's good content, but Tatsuya is beginning to wonder if he's really being paid enough to witness this.
"So, what are you doing?" Ran asks. Cryptid clicks his tongue at whatever he's seeing, then moves a bit to the side so Ran can sidle up next to him and also lean out. She turns a little green but bravely stays put.
"Spring cleaning," Cryptid says. "It's really rude to litter in the void, but sometimes this happens anyway. So I'll just-"
He moves as if wiping something outside the portal, and the patch of spontaneous blood dumps a full bucket onto this already haunted floor.
Ran reaches back blindly, and Tatsuya reluctantly takes her place. Cryptid, blessedly, does not notice Ran trying to get Tatsuya and his camera to the portal. He shuts it the second she's out. Tatsuya can't help but feel a little relieved at being spared the burden of witnessing whatever Ran saw.
He likes not knowing, sometimes.
Ran fixes this by turning to him with very wide eyes and saying, "there was, I Kid you not, a wall of fabric, and so many stars. He found blood on the fabric and shoved it in, and it was like it wanted? To go?"
"Do you need to sit down?" Cryptid asks her gently.
"I saw the void, and it had so much shit in it," Ran tells Tatsuya and his camera. Cryptid very gently takes one of the hands she's gesturing with and pats it to catch her attention.
"It is very big," Cryptid agrees serenely. Ran frantically points at the painting, which has stopped dripping.
"Big," she repeats. "Big is small compared to whatever that was."
Tatsuya nervously shifts.
"It is also an ecosystem," Cryptid continues, slow and calm. "What you saw is no different than a forest, or the ocean. It is a perfectly natural part of the way things work, just a part you weren't aware of."
"There was nothing natural about that," Ran hisses.
"Pigeons make milk," Cryptid says, which- what? The unexpected announcement has Ran startling right out of her existential crisis. "There are species of jellyfish so rare they've only been caught on camera once. There's a river in England that looks like a brook from the top, but is so narrow and deep that putting a foot in would suck you right down. Many strange things exist in the world that you have not discovered yet. This does not make them wrong, or bad. It does also not invalidate your experience with them if anyone chooses to believe what you have experienced does not exist. Okay?"
Ran stares at him.
Cryptid meets her eyes steadily. "You are right about what you saw, no matter what people may try to tell you. And you are not alone in your knowledge of it. Everything is working as it should."
Ran keeps staring at him, until Cryptid slowly opens one arm in an offer. He lets the interviewer choose how close she gets, then stands there with an arm draped over Ran's shoulders like it's the most natural thing in the world.
A spider skitters across the ceiling.
"We are going to stand here and breathe for a little bit," Cryptid says easily. He glances at Tatsuya. "How are you holding up?"
"You've seen someone go mad from this," Tatsuya realizes. His mouth puts it into words before he can stop the conclusion from lying dead as a ghost in the stifling air between them.
"Not yet," Cryptid says. He glances at Ran, then up at the dust and cobwebs.
Not yet.
There is subtext in those two words.
Tatsuya finds his heart speeding up.
The reason these interviews are safe and worth doing is that they are conducted with trained rescue specialists. The danger is chosen specifically to be something these heroes can handle in their sleep.
The danger is not supposed to come from the hero-
"Can you smell that?" Cryptid asks, cutting through Tatsuya's gasping panic.
What-
He inhales, finds he's breathing too quickly, and forces his lungs to cooperate. Two deep breaths later, he glares at Cryptid.
"Any iron?" The hero asks. "Deep breaths, long and slow. There you go, just like that. Can you smell iron?"
"You bastard," Tatsuya wheezes.
"I'm very manipulative, yes," Cryptid says serenely.
"No iron," Ran creaks.
"Fake blood," Cryptid says. He shrugs the shoulder Ran hasn't claimed at Tatsuya's disbelief and adds, "someone pranked your show. Not with whatever Onemu is doing - the void loves her too much to interfere in that. But it did allow someone to set up that painting specifically to fuck with me."
What.
"Why did I agree to this?" Tatsuya asks under his breath.
"Because you had a formative experience at thirteen where you realized surrounding yourself with extroverts and people who thrive in odd situations brings you more happiness than any desk job," Cryptid explains. Tatsuya fumbles with his very expensive equipment. "Also, I suspect you're being paid a fair amount, but really it's the same as Kaito. Y'all really should compare wages."
"We're keeping you," Ran decides from where she's pressing her hands into her face.
Cryptid grins at the ceiling, which Ran misses entirely. His smile is too wide, too sharp, and stars bleed from his shadow. "Good luck. I am not made to be contained."
Mundane cheer takes its place by the time Ran shakes her head and steps away.
Tatsuya was holding the camera, though.
-
Izuku waits on the building roof.
"When did you figure out it was me?"
Not needing to turn around to identify the speaker, Izuku just heaves a sigh. The empty bag of fake blood crinkles from his belt pouch. "Nobody else would."
Cloud makes a disgruntled noise.
"And that last thud upstairs was very good, but when you swear into the Null about hitting your elbow on a brick wall, I can hear it."
Cloud frowns.
"I thought you hated ghosts?" Izuku asks, and gets a strange look for the question. As if Cloud hasn't put string ghost traps on top of several versions of the cafe.
"There was nothing supernatural about that place. Guess they were ghosting you."
"Then who was Exorcism talking with?"
"She wasn't talking to-" Cloud loses about two shades of color and backs up a bit. "Right. Cool. I'm gonna- uh. Go cleanse myself in a temple or something-"
"Did you not know?!"
"No," Cloud hisses back, hair bristling slightly like a cat. "I don't mess with ghosts. They get hungry and-" he breaks off, gesturing. "I don't know shit about exorcism, but that is very much not something I want to mess with!"
"I've seen you pickpocket an HPSC president," Izuku says, mildly offended and not sure why.

Aizawa's High School friends:
Odd-Eye
Blackbelt
Shinya Onemu (One of Tensei's sidekicks, think she's neat)
OC with a warping Quirk, later becomes this AU's Kurogiri
They were fairly close during their High School days (much to Aizawa's continual annoyance), but after the villain attack that took the life of the fourth friend they gradually started drifting apart.
Thinking a bit more on this, since I mentioned FLaJ was a HR Joke AU I wanted to elaborate on that:
Fukukado went to UA as her main Hero School, while Aizawa went to Ketsubutsu*. Shouta chose Ketsubutsu as he felt it was the most logical choice (given the rumors about what kind of Entrance Exam they had), and Emi picked UA because vibes.
Now Outburst does next to nothing against machines, so she worked with her plan B: slapstick violence, just grabbing a broken street sign and whackin' robots to death.
Fukukado then ended up friends with the Rooftop Trio, plus Kayama down the road, and the four of them were invited to teach at UA a decade after graduation.
Aizawa, despite his... everything, ended up with his own friend group at Ketsubutsu (mostly one off characters from Vigilantes and TUM), and went full Underground after graduation. Sometimes doing guest lectures at other Hero schools, but mostly staying by himself when he can.
(Also, this is indirectly an Oboro Lives AU, as AFO would have no reason to send a Nomu in his general direction. That does mean I have to Nomufy one of Aizawa's friends, man just can't escape trauma I guess.)

DIABOLIK LOVERS Para-Selene Vol.5 Sakamaki Laito [Track 3]
Tumblr media
Original title: éĄăźäžă«æ˜ ă‚‹ăźăŻ
Source: Diabolik Lovers Para-Selene Vol. 5 Sakamaki Laito [CD not owned by me]
Audio: Here (26:35~37:53)
Seiyuu: Hirakawa Daisuke
Translator’s note: Three tracks in and Laito is finally starting to show that perhaps he doesn’t enjoy this situation quite as much as he initially thought. I’m honestly surprised that the MC is staying relatively calm being around this guy with none of her memories intact. I feel like she was much more scared in some of the other CDs. Maybe it’s just me, but if I was suffering from amnesia, Laito would be the last person on my list to spend time with lol. Anyway, I feel like the next track will be an emotional one so we might be in for a wild ride guys.

Track 3: Reflected in the Mirror is...
*Rustle*
“...Bitch-chan~ ...Bitch-chanăƒŒ Wake up...WakeăƒŒ upăƒŒ...~”
You slowly stir awake.
“Are you still sleepy-sleepy? (1) Good morning, Bitch-chan~ I didn’t think you would just faint on me back then. Although I suppose I’m in no position to judge you. I was overcome by dizzy spells as well, and by the time I came back to my senses, I found myself here.”
You look around.
“Seems like a House of Mirrors. Come on, take a look. Your anxious expression is reflected both on the walls and the ceiling...Nfufu~ Don’t you think it’s beautiful?”
You try to escape his grip.
*Rustle rustle*
“Oh come on, don’t throw a fuss! I’m being so kind to hold you in my arms! You should be a little more happy about it!”
You protest.
“HmăƒŒ I wouldn’t mind letting you go buuut...~ Either way, there’s no way of escape~”
Your eyes widen in horror.
“Fufu~ Your face of sheer despair excites me as well. Say, Bitch-chan? We were teleported here as part of the illusions created through your Paraselene Syndrome. Doesn’t that mean that deep down, you want me to tend to you here?”
You shake your head.
“Is that so? In that case...Shall we put it to the test?”
He pins you down.
*Thud*
“Come on, take a glance in the mirror. There’s a girl who seems anxious, unsure what I’ll do to her now that she is pinned down, yet at the same time, looks awfully eager, don’t you think? In the end, she ends up yearning for the pleasure. That girl...is you.”
Laito bites you.
*Gulp gulp gulp*
“...Aah~ No running~ You have to look closely, without averting your gaze.”
*Gulp gulp gulp*
“Nn...At yourself, as you drown into the pleasure given to you by my fangs.”
*Gulp gulp gulp*
“Mm...Ah~ ...Oh dear? You’ve calmed down quite a bit, considering how loud you were screaming earlier. I knew it...You do feel good. Fufufu~ You really are such an easy girl, aren’t you~?”
You deny it.
“Fufu~ I’m not wrong. You’re a ‘Bitch-chan’ who just loves anything which pleasures you after all.”
You insist that is not the case.
“HmăƒŒ You’re still denying it? Darn...I’m kind of sick and tired of having this discussion, you see? So listen up...Just admit to it already.”
He continues sucking your bood.
*Gulp gulp gulp*
“Aah~”
*Gulp*
“Haah...Hah...Just focus on my fangs...As you relax your body...and take deep breaths...”
*Gulp gulp gulp*
“Hah...See? You already...can no longer fight back. Even without your memories, your body clearly remembers. This works in your favor, no? Look, you’ve already got that dreamy look in your eyes...”
You close your eyes.
“Oh come on, BItch-chan~ How could you close your eyes like that? Mmh...”
*Smooch*
“Nn...”
*Smooch*
“Come on, open your eyes. You’re making such a lovely expression right now. Look in the mirror. If not...I’ll thrust in my fangs somewhere much more...’risqué’~”
You open your eyes.
“Nfu~ Mmh...~ Good girl. Come on, lift your face. Bitch-chan...What can you see reflected in your eyes?”
You flush a dark red.
“Fufu~ You’re embarrassed? You love this sorta stuff too, right, Bitch-chan~? ...Fufu~ I’m having fun as well! It’s really funny. You’re giving me the exact same reactions as back then. Say? Try and enjoy it a little more. You just love this kind of thing, don’t you?”
You shake your head.
“Haah...Bitch-chan...Didn’t I tell you I’ve seen enough of your innocent reactions? I think it’s about time you have some fun with me.”
You insist that you truly don’t like this.
“...Well, I guess that makes sense. Your past self would have obviously opposed to this. But you know, you can drop that attitude now. I’m already more than satisfied.”
*Rustle*
“Lately I had been feeling like our relationship was missing that ‘unf’, so I got excited by seeing you fight back for the first time in a while, but I’m honestly over it now. In the end, it has to be my usual Bitch-chan, or I can’t enjoy it from the bottom of my heart. I wonder how long this illusion will continue on for? Don’t you think it’s taking a little long?”
You ask if he is okay.
“...! Oh...Haah!?”
You explain.
“What has gotten into you all of a sudden? Why would I look sad?”
You frown.
“Haah...Don’t look at me like that. You’re usually so dense too, so why are you awfully sharp at times like these? ...Right. I’m probably...lonely. Because you’ve forgotten about me so easily. This isn’t like me but...I honestly don’t know what to do. If my past self was watching me right now, I’m sure he’d feel disappointed. ...Oh well, telling that to you in your current state doesn’t actually solve anything though.”
You comfort him.
“You finally called me ‘Laito-kun’...I’m happy...I guess we should quit the sentimental talk here? Your memories still won’t come back, so I guess we really have no other choice but to enjoy this situation. We will reinact impactful happenings within your memories. By doing so, these illusions will eventually come to an end. ăƒŒăƒŒ In that case, I will just have to summon a vivid memory from within you. Where should I suck from next~? Say, which place would you prefer?”
You fail to reply.
“Well, I guess I shouldn’t have expected a genuine response. In that case, I just have to make a real mess out of you until you feel like becoming a little more obedient~ Bitch-chan...You like it when I bite your ear, don’t you?”
Laito tries to bite you when the dizzy spells suddenly hit again.
*BZZZZZZZZ*
“Uu...Argh...Kuh...!! Ugh...Haah...Ah...Haah, haah...My head is...This...again...!? Almost as if...I’m being...mocked...Where will it...take us next...? I hope it’s...someplace a little more interesting...Uu...!”
*Woosh*
ăƒŒăƒŒ TO BE CONTINUED ăƒŒăƒŒÂ
Translation notes
(1) おねむ or ‘onemu’ is baby/toddler talk in Japanese. You wouldn’t really use it to adults all that often. However, Laito likes to use these kind of ‘childish’ or ‘cutesy’ words a lot. For example, in a lot of early era drama CDs, he would refer to kissing as ‘chu-chu suru’.

Iced Burns and Trampled Embers
Iced Burns and Trampled Embers by Sandtalon
Fuyumi stands in the hall doorway, watching Natsuo create ice cream by pouring milk across his hand and scraping it off. She wonders, a bit absently, if she should just freeze the whole kitchen and be done with it.
Father won't notice because he never enters the kitchen for anything but coffee and whatever Fuyumi leaves on the table for dinner. Their only other options for melting it are Touya - who is a pyromaniac - and the six-year-old child her father is currently designing a heroics costume for.
(Character study on Fuyumi from ages thirteen to twenty-four. It started as trying to write Touya and Fuyumi as twins with linked quirks, and somehow became a one-shot in the process. Then it got painful, complex, and finally a little hopeful.)

Chapter 1
Map My Heart: A KiriBaku x Male Reader fic Words: 1.8k
a/n: haha there’s angst at the beginning of this be prepared
Normally, the waves crashing against the side of the ship calms you, against the side of your ship. This isn’t your ship. This isn’t your cabin. This isn’t the place you’ve called home for the past two years. Your home has settled on the ocean shore by now, along with the people you’ve considered your family.
They caught you off guard. This ship looks like a fishing boat- small and not threatening at all. You were boarded, ransacked and sunk.
“Captain!” Your captain lays in a pool of his own blood on the deck. The white, blue accented uniform he wears is dyed crimson. Iida Tensei, your trusted captain of two years, is dying before your eyes. Even as his life drains from his face, he gives you the same reassuring smile he gave you when you were first assigned as his ship’s scribe. This time though, you won’t be able to wake up the next day with him treating you like his family.
“Enigma! Onemu! Bigshot!” Their bodies are limp, just as bloody as their captain.
Compared to your fellow crew members, you’re virtually untouched- well, you’re not dying. You’re certainly injured, but nowhere near to the point of everyone else. The most serious injury is a cruel severing of your achilles tendons via a knife. A few pirates pinned you to the floor and one hacked into the tendons until it broke with a sickening snap. Your cries were muffled from having your face shoved against the floor.  ‘So you can’t run away,’ they said. It’s an effective method, seeing as you can barely walk. You’re really just stumbling hopelessly as two pirates hold you up.
The rattling of crates holding your cartography and scribing supplies remind you of the only reason you’re alive.  You’re a scribe- a luxury for people other than naval ships.
At least, that’s what you thought. As it turns out, you’re being held for ransom. Choosing you seems quite silly in your mind. Your captain would be a far better choice- he’s not high ranking, but somehow well liked by people that usually despise the navy. That’s fairly rare. You however, are just a scribe. There’s plenty of scribes being taught in the navy, just like you were.
Your captors are called the Eight Bullets. They’re a group of individuals known to do the dirty work for their boss, the real captain. The group is known for its brutality and lack of remorse. A group of terrible, seemingly bloodthirsty pirates who do whatever their captain tells them.
The door to the brig slams open and you’re forced out of your thoughts. Tengai, the kindest of the eight people aboard this ship in your opinion, has brought you your food for the day. Your hands are tied behind your back. The fact that they keep you tied up despite your inability to really stand up and run seems ridiculous to you. Thankfully, Tengai is kind enough to feed you the bread you’re given. He sits in front of you and holds the bread in front of your face. It’s the only act of kindness you’re given on this ship.
“We’ll be heading back to port soon. If the navy cares about you, then you might get to see land again.” Tengai is calm, a civil person and it keeps you from exploding,
“I’m a scribe. You would’ve done much better if you kept Captain Iida alive for ransom instead of me.” You sigh and take a bit of your bread. There’s silence. When you’re finished with your bite, you continue. “The navy has plenty of eager new scribes ready to go on a ship.”
Tengai is quiet. He takes in your words and is about to speak before the ship shakes. There’s an explosion and wood splinters by you. A cannonball, now resting within a pile of broken wood, has created a hole in the side of the ship. Waves threaten to enter the hull. You watch as Tengai leaves you, dropping the bread on the floor. He needs to go up and see what’s going on, but it’s quite obvious. They’re being attacked.
Echoes of battle are quick to fill the hull and brig. Shouts, the clank of metal against metal and an occasional gun shot. You close your eyes and lean against the wall of the brig. Part of you hopes that whoever’s fighting the Eight Bullets is the navy, but you really doubt it. It’s most likely another pirate ship, just aiming to grab whatever they can.
“Check the hull!”
You manage to hear someone yell through the floor of the deck. The hatch slams open unceremoniously and heavy footsteps signal a person entering the hull. The door to where the brig is still open. Red hair is the first thing you see- bright red hair. You shift and the floor creaks, red eyes suddenly locking with yours. They’re hostile until they see the ropes binding you and your bloody clothing- along with the naval uniform attached to this part of the ocean.
This person- a young man, slowly approaches you. Whatever might be in the hull is forgotten in favor of you. If you could properly move, you’d shuffle further away from him.
Now, Kirishima is curious. He rarely expects to find someone below deck. But you’re there, a naval officer bound and injured. Unlike most of the naval officers he’s come across, you’re quiet and somewhat scared. It’s the opposite of what he expects. You’re like a scared animal. He can’t help the way he slowly approaches you and leans against the rusty bars keeping you caged.
“Hey there! Looks like you’re in a bit of trouble!”
“... Thanks for pointing out the obvious.” You roll your eyes and turn away. Kirishima’s choice of words obviously weren’t the best.
“No, not like that! I’ve never seen a guy from the navy captured by a pirate before, that’s all.” Kirishima smiles at you nervously.
“Scribes aren’t the best at fighting
”
“A scribe? You’re a scribe?” The way Kirishima’s face lights up is frightening. He bolts out of the brig and hull without hesitation. You can hear his excited voice through the wood. The voice responding is the one who told him to go into the hull in the first place. Both voices go quiet and two sets of footsteps enter the hull.
The redhead is eager to pop back into the brig.
“Hey! I brought the captain!” His happiness is completely lost on you.
“So this is the scribe?”
The first thing you notice about the captain is his harsh glare. Red eyes that stab into you as he stares down at you. It’s a little intimidating. The lack of clothing is the next thing you focus on. He’s barely wearing any sort of shirt, having settled for a large red cape embellished with fur and intricate designs. The garments he wears are similar to that of the so-called “savage tribes” across the sea. His red haired companion wears the same sort of clothing. With less skin covered and tattoos that aren’t often seen, you come to the conclusion that these two aren’t the pirates your navy normally encounters.
“... Unfortunately.” You shift in your spot, trying to ignore his gaze. “I would really like to be anything but a scribe right now.”
“You should be grateful we took this ship.”
“Why would I be? I’ve already had my fill of pirates for a century.” When the words come out of your mouth, you immediately regret them.
“Then I guess we should leave.” Something in the blond’s voice makes you think he actually will. The redhead is quick to reassure you he won’t, only angering him in the process.
“You see, we need a scribe to help us out! Why don’t you come with us and be our scribe?”
It’s not a bad deal. If you don’t take the offer, you’ll probably end up sinking with this ship. Then again, taking the offer guarantees you to be stuck on a ship with a bunch of pirates that might actually kill you if you’re not careful. And why would they even want someone from the navy? Any kingdom’s navy is an enemy to pirates. You’re navy- you should be seen as the enemy, not a possible employee. Well, employee isn’t the right word.
“Fuck- fine.”
“Great!” The moment you hear the redhead’s voice, you watch the rusted metal separating you from them snap in half. Your breath stops in your throat and you stare at the man. He looks at you and only grins sheepishly. “Sorry, should’ve warned you.”
“It’s fine
” Muttering, you let him cut your restraints away. When he holds his hand out for you though, you have to stop. It’s an injury, but it’s still embarrassing to admit that you can’t walk on your own. It should be obvious by how blood is pooled around your feet, the bottoms of your pants covered in it. He doesn’t seem to notice. He seems like a more aloof person the more you look at him anyways.
“You can’t walk, can you?” And before you can respond, the blond hoists you over his shoulder, a hand holding onto your waist firmly. “Say anything and I’ll fuckin’ drop you, got it?”
You go silent and let yourself go limp in his hold.
“I’m Kirishima, and the guy holding you is Bakugou. Call him captain though, okay?” Nodding, you look at Kirishima and let him ramble to you. The happy aura he gives you is reassuring, enough to help you forget for a moment that you’re being carried like a sack of produce. You can make out a few people as you pass them by.
With the way you’re dangling and moving, blood has begun to flow from your wounds again. You’re already light-headed from the initial injury. Thankfully, with such a watchful redhead staring at you, the slight change in your demeanor doesn’t go unnoticed. As things go a little hazy and your attention wavers, he’s right there to do something about it.
“Hey, hey, scribe? You with us?”
Bakugou stops and only then does he notice the new trickle of blood now coating him. Kirishima waves his hand in front of your face and when you let out a weak groan, he grabs your face.
“Hang in there, okay?” Even in your hazy state, you’re surprised when he slides you out of the blond’s grip and into his own. Instead of being hoisted on his shoulder, he’s carrying you as if you’re a delicate princess. It’d be embarrassing if you could muster the energy to be embarrassed.
“Don’t get blood on the bed, shitty hair!”
Tumblr media
There’s a weight on your stomach when consciousness reaches you. Blinking, there’s a mass of spiky red hair laying there. Kirishima seems to be resting on your stomach.
“You’re heavy.” You smack the side of his head weakly. He groans and lifts his head, blinking a moment before grinning at you.
“You lost a lot of blood back there. We were worried that you might die.”
“Thanks.”
“By the way, you’ll be staying in this cabin with me and Bakugou! He doesn’t want you out of his sight since you’re navy.”
“Great.”

i am in love with your writing!! would you mind doing a part 2 of the tensei one? where he regrets letting his fiancée go and wants them back? happy ending please! thank you!!
[Ask and you shall receive. I hope you enjoy!]  Part One: [Here.]
Tumblr media
It had been months since the day Tensei called off your engagement. You had left your engagement ring right where it belonged, on the floor of the Iida Estate. Tensei had arranged for your things to be moved out and though you had trouble, you eventually found an apartment. It was in a rather shady part of Tokyo but it was the best you could on such short notice. Some of the boxes were still unopened, but you didn’t care.
Your chest ached, that same heavy feeling weighing you down. Every time you looked at your hands you were reminded of the ring that was once there and those happy memories would flood through your mind and the tears would come. You never thought Tensei of all people would hurt you like this. He had made a promise to love you forever, to take care of you. But he changed his mind after going through a tough time.
You understood some of it, you knew Tensei had a passion for helping others. For being a hero and that was taken away from him, forcing him into early retirement. You knew it couldn’t have been easy. But that was no excuse for hurting you like this, for pushing you away and shattering the only thing that brought you such happiness. Your heart was in so much pain, you wished you could rip it out of your chest.
Make it stop beating by force or just wished you could somehow feel nothing at all. But you knew that wasn’t possible, well actually it was. With all the different quirks this world possessed, but even so, you knew you would regret it. So the loneliness continued, crying yourself to sleep in an empty and cold bed. Your phone silent, absent of all the loving messages you used to get. The smell of fresh breakfast as you walked down the stairs with Tensei. It was all gone, despite the fact that your ex-fiance had made attempts to contact you.
At first, it surprised you just as much as it shattered your heart to see those texts. Tensei asking if you were alright, Tensei saying he was sorry, Tensei wondering if you could meet up. But you never replied, almost finding it laughable that he could ask such things to you after what he did. You blocked his number, though you found it the hardest thing you had to do yet. It had been a good month since then and you made sure to block any contacts associated with Tensei as well.
It might seem like an extreme thing to do, but you didn’t have much of a choice. In fact, you didn’t want to talk to anyone. You didn’t want anyone to see you, the only thing you wanted was for this damn heartbreak to go away so you could move on with your life. But each day seemed harder than the next, shouldn’t it be the opposite? You began to wonder if life was just kicking you while you were down.
You had decided to go shopping, having eaten a massive amount of take out as comfort food for the last couple of weeks. Though it was an uneasy feeling, walking down the street in such a neighborhood. Some of the buildings had boarded up or broken windows and there was graffiti on some brick walls. It was uneasy and you kept your head down the whole time until you arrived at the store. Gathering what you needed in a hurry before walking back out.
Bags hung from your wrists and your head was facing the ground, watching the cracks in the sidewalk go by. Your stomach was twisting, no surprise you were scared and you just wanted to go back home, to your shitty apartment. But once more, fate showed how cruel it could be and you froze when you heard a voice call out to you. “Hey sweet cheeks!” you gasped, your eyes going wide.
You wished you could run, but your feet didn’t want to move. Despite the screams in your head telling you to book it, you could hear heavy footsteps behind you, and a scream got stuck in your throat when you felt a muscular arm wrap around your shoulders. Pulling you close and forcing you up against their chest. “Hey cutie, what do you got there?” the strange man questioned and you turned your head, noticing how much of a scumbag he looked like.
His hair was greasy, he had multiple scars on his face and that overall arrogant vibe he carried was enough to make you sick. “I ...I
” you swallowed hard, feeling your body tremble and the man must have felt it because he then smirked down at you. “Awe, what’s a matter? Don’t be scared, I’m not such a bad guy,” he replied, his voice turning sickeningly sweet which almost made you vomit. “G-Get away from me!” you snapped as you pushed against his chest and stumbled back.
Your bags hitting the ground, but that was the least of your worries. The man chuckled and leaned up, “Oh you shouldn’t have done that.” he replied, his voice changing from sweet to downright threatening. You felt a shiver go down your spine when you saw his eyes turn red and his muscles grow into something of a monstrous proportion. “W-What is t-this?” you whispered, despite your fear.
The man chuckled and looked at you, a smirk across his face. “You’re about to find out,” he replied before he raised his arms above his head and you suddenly realized there was a chance you might be getting that wish of your heart to stop beating. He smashed his fists into the ground, causing the pavement to crack apart and despite your best efforts to try and run away. You weren’t fast enough and a piece of pavement had sent you flying.
You cried as you hit the ground, dirt collecting on your clothes. You groaned, slowly pushing yourself up onto your knees. Hearing the man chuckle from behind you as your eyes watered, this was like the first time you had met Tensei. Some bastard was harassing you and then Ingenium came to your rescue. But it wouldn’t end like that this time and you felt tears begin to roll down your cheeks.
What was the point of living if you had lost the one person you wanted to live for? You growled and reached up to rub your eyes before shakily standing on your feet. Your eyes narrowed on the muscular man. “Aw, what’s the matter? Did I make you cry? Don’t worry, I’ll fix that!” he shouted as his fists hit the ground again and you once more watched the pavement crack. It was headed straight in your direction, but instead of moving.
You held your arms out and closed your eyes, maybe your heartbreak would finally end if you just gave up. But before the impact happened, you felt arms wrap around your waist and pull you away. You gasped, your eyes snapping back open and you looked to who was holding you. “Bigshot?” you were in disbelief, though you had met most of the team members that made up Team Idaten.
You gasped as your head turned back and you saw the rest of the team which included Enigma and Onemu Shinya, as well as a few unnamed sidekicks. Bigshot created distance between your attacker and yourself before releasing you. “Are you okay?” he questioned as he placed his hands on your shoulders. But you were still in shock, “I ...I
” you started to respond before shaking your head, your hands clenched into fists.
“What are you even doing here!? Did Tensei put you up to this!? Well you can tell him I didn’t need his help and I don’t need him!” you snapped as you stomped your foot and left Bigshot with his jaw dropped. You huffed and turned to walk away, “W-Wait!” he called out to you, his hand outstretched in your direction. You sighed and turned. “What?” you hissed, clearly wanting to be done with this day already.
Bigshot dropped his hand and you could see a frown was on his face. “Tensei asked us to find you. He came to us, asking for our help because he was worried about you.” he shared and you laughed, “Worried? WORRIED!? Oh, that’s funny! That’s really funny after what that ...bastard did to me.” you hissed through your clenched teeth. Bigshot looked at you, unsure of what to say.
“He ...still loves you.” he offered and once more you laughed, your tears coming back. “Nobody who loves you does that
” nobody who loves you would give up on your relationship even when they felt like they weren’t good enough, even when they felt like they didn’t deserve you and damn, did you ever love Tensei. You loved him more than anything in the world, more than life itself, and yet it seems he felt otherwise.
“I’m leaving, thanks for everything, hero.” you hissed the word and began to walk away, hearing Bigshot call out to you. “He’s waiting for you!” you didn’t know what that meant but you continued back to your apartment, a little pissed that you had nothing to eat now. Money wasted on items that were now laying in the street, more than likely crushed thanks to that muscle asshole.
You sighed as you somehow managed to make it to your apartment, still covered in dirt and you had a few minor cuts but that was nothing a good long bath couldn’t fix. In fact, you just wanted to clean up and lay down. Food could wait. “Ah, come on!” you growled as you fumbled with your keys, your hands wouldn’t stop trembling. Maybe you were still shaken up from the events of earlier but you eventually managed to unlock your door and step inside.
Turning to close it, you jumped when you heard someone. “Y/n?” a shiver ran down your spine and you felt your jaw drop, the sound of that voice made your heart skip a beat and you knew immediately who it was. But you refused to look at him and remained facing the door. “T-Tensei
” you growled and your hands curled into fists. “You have a lot of nerve showing up here. Making your former team ...track me down.” even if it was with good intentions in mind.
You could hear his wheelchair creek as he moved closer to you but he was smart enough to keep his distance. “Y/n ...I didn’t mean to hurt you. I know that’s hard to believe after what I did.” he began, holding his hand to his chest and a painful expression came over his features. “I regret what I said, I regret what I did. I was blinded with my own hatred, my own frustration and I took it out on the one person that I cared about the most.” his words made your chest ache again, did he have to remind you of what he did?
“You’re covered in dirt,” he said and you felt his fingers brush against your arm. You growled and slapped his hand away, finally turning around to face him. “Like you give a damn about that! Like you give a damn about me! You come here and expect me to suddenly forgive you for what you did? For what you put me through, do you know how much pain and bullshit I’ve had to deal with since
” you let out a sob, clenching your jaw tightly.
Tensei frowned, he hated the sound of you crying and he had the sudden urge to pull you close. Hold you until all those tears dry away. But he knew he couldn’t right now, “I ...regret letting you go Y/n, it was a mistake and I want to fix it.” you growled and stepped further away from him. “Fix it!? Oh, after months. After kicking me out, after forcing me to go through this fucking bullshit. How are you going to fix it Tensei? Please ...please fucking tell me, I’m dying to hear.” you snapped, tears still falling down your cheeks.
Tensei took a breath and reached into his pocket, you looked as he held his hand out and your engagement ring was sitting in his palm. “I’ll start by returning this, I have mine on too!” He said as he lifted his other hand and showed you, sure enough, there was his engagement ring. “Tensei
” you trailed off before shaking your head. “Just because you give me my ring back doesn’t mean I accept you or your apology.”  you began, after all, what did that prove? Oh, he found your ring, big deal.
Tensei lowered his hand, clasping his fingers around the ring. He looked to the side before speaking, “I guess you’re right. Nothing excuses my behavior or what I did, but y/n I love you and I will do anything to prove that.” he said before grabbing onto the arms of his wheelchair and you looked confused as he began to try and stand up. “What? T-Tensei! What are you doing!?” your anger subsided for the moment, you didn’t want him to hurt himself.
However, he seemed determined and continued, your jaw-dropping as he stood tall and then took one shaky step forward. Your heart was racing, finding yourself being afraid that he would fall or worse and yet your feet refused to move. Just like earlier, you seemed frozen with fear. Tensei took another step forward before stumbling and you gasped, running to catch him, “A-Are you crazy?!” you exclaimed, hating the fact that you worried so much about a man who hurt you so bad.
But Tensei smiled and grabbed onto your shoulder, “Nonsense! I got these hydraulic leg braces from Mei Hatsume at UA. She said they would be hard to get used to, but I
” he paused as he looked down at you, a smile coming to his face. “I wanted to be able to prove to you
to myself that I can be the man you deserve and if that meant getting used to a semi-permanent attachment well that’s just how it’s going to be.” you looked at him with disbelief.
“You ...you got leg braces for me?” you questioned and Tensei chuckled before nodding. “When I realized I made a mistake, I wanted to do anything to get you back,” he said before stabilizing himself, though his legs shook underneath his weight. “Including being able to walk down that aisle to marry the love of my life. So ...what do you say?” Tensei said, grinning as he held up the ring. You swallowed hard, you didn’t want to forgive him. You refused to.
“T-This doesn’t make up for what you did,” you replied, your voice is a whisper and Tensei frowned. “I know, but
” he grabbed your hand and gently slid the ring onto your finger. “I’ll have the rest of my life as your husband to make up for it, so
” you held your breath as he slowly bent down on his knee. Which took some time, his legs, and the bracers having to work together slowly.
“Y/n will you do me the honor of making me the happiest man alive and become an official part of the Iida family.” he paused before taking a deep breath and you noticed the red tint that filled his cheeks, somehow it made you smile. “Will you marry me y/n?” you pressed your lips together, feeling your heart beat faster. Despite everything he had done, he still came back to you and he still wanted to marry you. Was that enough to prove how sorry he was? You weren’t sure, but you opened your mouth to speak.
“Yes.” you said hesitantly, “I’ll marry you Tensei.”

Asirpa (ă‚ąă‚·ă‡Œăƒ‘): tizenĂ©ves ainu lĂĄny, aki Ă©desapja tanĂtĂĄsait követve Ă©li Ă©letĂ©t a hagyomĂĄnyos ainu kultĂșrĂĄnak megfelelƑen. Tiszteli a termĂ©szetet Ă©s hisz a benne lakozĂł istenekben (kamuy). RendkĂvĂŒli tudĂĄssal rendelkezik növĂ©nyekrƑl, ĂĄllatokrĂłl, vadĂĄszatrĂłl, Ă©telkĂ©szĂtĂ©srƑl Ă©s gyĂłgyĂtĂĄsrĂłl. Nagyon hatĂĄrozott fiatal lĂĄny, aki tiszta lĂ©nyĂ©vel Ă©s bƱntelen gondolataival ellensĂșlyozza a manga vilĂĄgĂĄnak romlottsĂĄgĂĄt. Apja, Wilk azonban egyĂĄltalĂĄn nem nƑies szerepet szĂĄn a jövƑbeli AsirpĂĄnak: rendszeresen vitte magĂĄval vadĂĄszni Ă©s titkon minden tudĂĄst ĂĄtadott neki, ami ahhoz kellhet, hogy egyszer a lĂĄny lehessen a fĂŒggetlenedni vĂĄgyĂł ainuk vezĂ©ralakja. Wilk rĂĄadĂĄsul belekĂ©nyszerĂtette AsirpĂĄt az aranyĂ©rt folytatott kĂŒzdelembe azĂĄltal, hogy olyan kĂłdot tetovĂĄlt a fegyencekre, melyhez ĂĄllĂtĂłlag egyedĂŒl Asirpa tudja a kulcsot.
Szugimoto Szaicsi / Halhatatlan Szugimoto (æ‰ć…ƒ 䜐䞀 / 䞍死èș«ăźæ‰ć…ƒ): fiatal hĂĄborĂșs veterĂĄn, aki megjĂĄrta az Orosz-japĂĄn hĂĄborĂșt (1904-1905). ElkĂ©pesztƑ kĂŒzdeni akarĂĄsa, vakmerƑsĂ©ge Ă©s gyorsan gyĂłgyulĂł sebei miatt kiĂ©rdemelte a “halhatatlan” jelzƑt. Egy nagyon egyszerƱ Ă©s kedves ember, aki szĂvĂ©n viseli mĂĄsok sorsĂĄt, ugyanakkor a hĂĄborĂșs Ă©lmĂ©nyek miatt Ășgy Ă©rzi, mĂĄr sosem lehet rĂ©gi önmaga. Élete azonban mĂĄr a katonasĂĄg elƑtt összeomlott, mikor csalĂĄdjĂĄt megbetegĂtette a tuberkulĂłzis.
Asirpa Ă©s Szugimoto a manga 2. fejezetĂ©ben lesznek szövetsĂ©gesek, miutĂĄn Asirpa segĂt legyƑzni Szugimotonak egy megvadult emberölƑ medvĂ©t. Asirpa ekkor mĂ©g Ășgy hiszi, apja az egyik az arany miatt megölt hĂ©t ainu közĂŒl, Ă©s szeretne utĂĄnajĂĄrni a törtĂ©nteknek. Szugimotonak csupĂĄn pĂ©nz kell, hogy orvoshoz vihesse Ă©s segĂthesse fiatalkori szerelmĂ©t, Umekot. KĂ©t kĂŒlönbözƑ szĂĄndĂ©k vezĂ©rli Ƒket, de a cĂ©ljuk közös: megtalĂĄlni az ainuk elrejtett aranyĂĄt. Mivel Asirpa kijelenti, hogy Ƒ senkit nem akar megölni az aranyĂ©rt vĂvott harcban, Szugimoto mint veterĂĄn katona vĂĄllalja a munka piszkos rĂ©szĂ©t: “Te o jogoszu no va ore ga jaru. Asirpa szan va csie dake kasite kure.” (Ӄn leszek az, aki bemocskolja a kezĂ©t. Asirpa, tƑled csak a tudĂĄsodat kĂ©rem.”) - mondja a lĂĄnynak. A törtĂ©net kĂ©sƑbbi fejezeteiben bebizonyosodik, hogy Szugimoto a vĂ©gsƑkig tartja a szavĂĄt, Ă©s nem hagyja, hogy Asirpa kezĂ©hez vĂ©r tapadjon. EttƑl is olyan nagyszerƱ a karaktere.
“Ore va kane da. Asirpa szan va oja no kataki. Mokuteki va csigaedo micsi va onadzsi. Futari de te o kumeba oni ni kanabĂł da.” (“Én a pĂ©nzĂ©rt csinĂĄlom. RĂĄadĂĄsul szerepel benne az arany ĂrĂĄsjele is, fĂ©m jelentĂ©sben (金).

Röviddel ezutĂĄn konfliktusba keverednek egy tetovĂĄlt bƑr miatt: egy japĂĄn katona tĂĄmadja meg Ƒket a 7. hadosztĂĄlybĂłl, akik szintĂ©n a bƑrök gyƱjtĂ©sĂ©be kezdtek. A mesterlövĂ©sz Ogata a tĂĄmadĂł, aki azonban puskĂĄja nĂ©lkĂŒl alulmarad a Szugimotoval valĂł kĂŒzdelemben.

A tisztelet szĂłlhat is a lĂĄnynak nemcsak tudĂĄsa, hanem morĂĄlis tisztasĂĄga miatt is.
Tumblr media
A feszĂŒlt hangulatot fĂ©lbeszakĂtja Asirpa gyomorkorgĂĄsa (コロコロ - koro-koro). Asirpa elalszik a kunyhĂłban mĂg a fĂ©rfiak taktikai megbeszĂ©lĂ©st tartanak Siraisi kiszabadĂtĂĄsĂĄrĂłl, Ă©s Szugimoto hiĂĄba lenne kĂvĂĄncsi a lĂĄny vĂ©lemĂ©nyĂ©re: “Dame da... onemu no dzsikan da.” Nemui to kigen ga...”

KettejĂŒk szĂĄmomra legmeghatĂłbb jelenete a Daiszecuzan hegyen jĂĄtszĂłdik, a manga 100. fejezetĂ©ben. A hĂłvihar elƑl menekĂŒlve egy kibelezett Ƒz testĂ©be bĂșjnak szorosan összeölelkezve. AmĂg kint tombol a vihar, Ƒk odabent Ƒszinte beszĂ©lgetĂ©sbe kezdenek. Szugimoto szavai sajĂĄt magĂĄra is vonatkoznak, mikor elmondja, hogy a hĂĄborĂș mennyire kĂ©pes megvĂĄltoztatni az embert: nĂ©hĂĄnyan vissza tudnak tĂ©rni hĂĄborĂș elƑtti önmagukhoz, de vannak, akiknek a szĂve örökre a csatatĂ©ren marad, Ă©s hiĂĄba tĂ©rnek vissza JapĂĄnba, mĂĄr nem lesznek rĂ©gi önmaguk. A mindig Ă©hes Asirpa azonban megzavarja az elmĂ©lkedĂ©sĂ©t. Elkezdi enni az Ƒz mĂĄjĂĄt, Ă©s Ăgy az Ă©telekre terelƑdik a szĂł. KiderĂŒl, hogy Szugimoto kedvenc Ă©tele az aszalt datolyaszilva (hosigaki), Ă©s eltƱnƑdik azon, hogy Ă©vekkel ezelƑtt evett utoljĂĄra hosigakit, mĂ©g a hĂĄborĂș elƑtt. Asirpa egyszerƱ Ă©s jĂłzan logikĂĄjĂĄval sĂrĂĄsra kĂ©szteti Szugimotot: “Szugimoto mo hosigaki o tabetara szenszĂł e iku mae no Szugimoto ni modoreru no kana. Szubete ga ovattara... Szugimoto no kokkjĂł e cureteike. Vatasi mo hosigaki o tabetemitai.” – mondja a fĂ©rfinek. Szugimotonak eszĂ©be jut, mennyi mindent veszĂtett el a hĂĄborĂș elƑtt Ă©s alatt, Ă©s nĂ©ma sĂrĂĄsba kezd Asirpa hĂĄta mögött.
Tumblr media
Szugimoto Ă©s Asirpa a manga 138. fejezetĂ©ben elszakadnak egymĂĄstĂłl. Siraisi... Szugimoto ga sinderu vake nai daro. Aicu va ‘Fudzsimi no Szugimoto’ da zo.” (“MirƑl beszĂ©lsz, Siraisi!? Szugimoto nem lehet halott. Hiszen Ƒ ’Halhatatlan Szugimoto’!”).
Tumblr media
Asirpa megĂ©rzĂ©sei most sem csalnak. TehĂĄt ebben a faluban jĂĄrt. ValĂłban Szahalinra jött...!!”). Nagyon szeretem, mikor Szugimoto arca Asirpa hatĂĄsĂĄra ĂĄtvĂĄlt ilyen jĂłsĂĄgossĂĄ. TĂ©nyleg azt sugallja, hogy a lĂĄny segĂtsĂ©gĂ©vel Szugimoto vissza tud talĂĄlni hĂĄborĂș elƑtti önmagĂĄhoz. Nem gyakran lĂĄthatjuk Ăgy.
Tumblr media
KĂ©sƑbb, a 167. fejezetben egy remĂ©nytelen szituĂĄciĂłban lĂĄthatjuk Szugimotot. Tanigakival Ă©s Csikapasival egyĂŒtt kint rekednek egy hĂłviharban, Ă©s nem tudnak vĂ©dekezni a fagyos szĂ©l ellen. Szugimoto a hidegtƑl fĂ©lig eszmĂ©letlenĂŒl hallucinĂĄlni kezd. ElƑször hĂĄborĂșban elesett bajtĂĄrsa, Toradzsi vĂ©rben fĂŒrdƑ alakja tƱnik fel elƑtte, aztĂĄn sajĂĄt maga ĂĄltal kegyetlenĂŒl lemĂ©szĂĄrolt orosz katonĂĄk alakjĂĄt lĂĄtja, vĂ©gĂŒl megjelenik a fĂ©ny. A fĂ©nybƑl azonban Asirpa keze tƱnik fel, aki lĂ©nyĂ©vel ellensĂșlyozza a fĂ©rfi ĂĄltal ĂĄtĂ©lt borzalmakat, Ă©s hĂșzza vissza Szugimotot az Ă©letbe. Ahogy a fĂ©rfi magĂĄhoz tĂ©r, valĂłban fĂ©nyt lĂĄt: a menekĂŒlĂ©st jelentƑ vilĂĄgĂtĂłtorony fĂ©nye az, amit Koito Ă©s Cukisima indĂtott el.
Tumblr media
Szugimoto Ă©pp akkor talĂĄl rĂĄ AsirpĂĄra, mikor szemtƑl szemben ĂĄll a mesterlövĂ©sz OgatĂĄval, nyilat Ă©s puskĂĄt szegezve egymĂĄsra. Szugimoto kiĂĄltĂĄsĂĄra Asirpa annyira meglepƑdik, hogy vĂ©letlenĂŒl elengedi a mĂ©rgezett nyilat, ami belefĂșrĂłdik Ogata jobb szemĂ©be. A te halĂĄlodnak kicsit sem lesz köze a lĂĄnyhoz!!") – ĂŒvölti dĂŒhösen az ĂĄjult OgatĂĄnak. SzĂvesen hagynĂĄ veszni a mesterlövĂ©szt, de tudja, hogy ezzel Asirpa tisztasĂĄgĂĄn esne csorba, ezĂ©rt a lĂĄny vĂ©delmĂ©ben prĂłbĂĄlja elkerĂŒlni a fĂ©rfi halĂĄlĂĄt.
Tumblr media
MiutĂĄn mĂĄr semmi nem ĂĄll Ăștjukban, vĂ©gre megölelhetik egymĂĄst. Nagyon tetszik, ahogy közben a kĂ©p alsĂł sarkĂĄban a puska jelkĂ©pesen belecsĂșszik a vĂzbe:
Tumblr media
A terem ajtaja elƑtt azonban arca komolyra fordul, Ă©s kĂ©st rĂĄnt. Ha mĂĄr OgatĂĄnak tĂ©nyleg nincs sok hĂĄtra, Ășgy gondolja, inkĂĄbb leszĂșrja Ƒt, mintsem hagyja, hogy gyilkossĂĄ tegye AsirpĂĄt. Korrekt tƑle ez a gondolkodĂĄsmĂłd, hiszen a törtĂ©net elejĂ©n Ƒ vĂĄllalta a piszkos munkĂĄt, garantĂĄlva Asirpa tisztasĂĄgĂĄt. Ott a szurony a kĂ©p jobb alsĂł sarkĂĄban:

Az anime harmadik Ă©vada itt Ă©r vĂ©get, Ă©s az Ă©n elemzĂ©sem is eddig tart most. SzĂĄmomra ezek voltak eddig a legemlĂ©kezetesebb pillanatok.
