Summary: Levi is a college student who needs help on his research paper. Luckily, Hange is a book worm and works at the library. 

Levi was stressed and annoyed, mainly because he was in college. Of course with college comes infinite amounts of homework assignments, 100-question exams with astronomical amounts of topics on them, unnecessary research papers, and staying in a dorm room with a kid that happens to have no problem inviting his friends over every night to hang out and party with no regards to his sullen roommate.

Levi had a paper coming up. He had to come up with a topic, find sources, and finish his paper by the end of the semester. With three weeks left to go, he decided he’d rather get it over with. He began his brainstorming in the study lounge at the center of his dormitory floor. He was starting to stress. He sat on the big yellow leather couch in the way-too-bright study lounge with his laptop in his lap. He tapped his pen against his head as he tried to think of an idea. 

“You have to write about a topic related to your major,” The professor explained. “This is the one and only paper you will have assigned this semester. I suggest you get it done as early as possible.”

If only it were that easy. He had the rubric pulled up in one tab, and a ton of “How to pick a research topic” websites in others. His major was pharmaceuticals, a field he was inspired to take on because of his mother. She was very ill when he was very young, so they were in and out of hospitals. He was sitting on the edge of his mother’s hospital bed when a nurse came in the room to administer her medications. 

“This is…” His memory was blurry. “This medication will help… and make you feel better.” And it did. 9 year old Levi was fascinated. This one little pill or bag of what looked like water helped his mother feel better. Within hours, his mother’s skin went from pallor to beige. Her hands were warmer. She looked more awake, more alive. She didn’t wince at Levi’s touch. She was in less pain. She got better, like the nurse predicted.

Since then, Levi always asked questions whenever they visited the hospitals again and again. “What kind of drug is that?” “What does it do?” “How long does it take to take effect?”

Levi recalled the memory with a deep sigh. He missed his mother. She was at home, not too far away. Levi never had the time to travel the hour through the big city to visit her. When he did have free time, he spent it studying or sleeping. He felt his heart twinge at this. She had sacrificed everything to help him attend college and to give him a good life.

Now with his head cloudy, he went to reach his water bottle in his backpack. He opened the lid and took a sip. At that moment, he could hear some obnoxiously loud students throwing tennis balls back and forth to each other. He recognized these kids too, they were some (of many) of the lovely visitors his roommate had over most nights. Suddenly in the blink of an eye, Levi’s water bottle spilled all over his laptop, a tennis ball on the floor next to him, and some worried voices approaching him. Within seconds, the laptop started to steam and the screen went black.

His laptop was fried, he determined. He felt heat start to rise inside of him. 

“Oh my god, man. I am so sorry,” One of the kids said, trying to hold back a laugh. 

“Yeah, man. We didn’t mean to.”

Levi took a deep breath and stood up. These kids… were gonna pay.

He closed his broken laptop and stood up. These kids were much taller than him, but looked to be easily intimidated by Levi’s presence. 

“Do you have the money to pay for this?” He sneered, getting very close to their faces. 

“Eh… no, but we have jobs! We can pay you back over time,” One of the kids trailed off. They seemed to be intimidated by the short man. “You live in 112 right?”

Levi nodded, his face heating up with anger. “This laptop cost me a lot of money.”

“We get it, man! We said we’re sorry,” the other kid explained. “We’ll pay you back or whatever.”

“Tch,” Levi clicked. He was extremely pissed. These kids should not be throwing balls at each other in the hallway. Also, they spilled his water which made a mess. “Which room are you both in?” They responded with 118. The one kid explained they get paid on the 15th and 30th of each month. Luckily, their pay day was 4 days away.

“I’ll stop by Tuesday, the 16th,” Levi decided, before gathering his things and heading to the stairs. He began to walk through the campus. Fuck, now where was he gonna go? How was he gonna find his topics? His computer was fucked. Putting it in rice wouldn’t have helped. He was so occupied having a debate with himself about where to research, he almost missed it. If he looked the other way or even blinked in that moment, he wouldn’t have seen it. It was the campus library. No, not the campus library, but a campus library. It blended into the surroundings, hidden from the passerbyers. There was a sign in the window “We’re Open!”. 

The library was small, to say the least. It was old fashioned, which contrasted the modern aesthetic of the university. It was a small, dark brown, wooden building with four-pane windows. The door was a lighter shade of brown. He decided it was easier to check out this little library instead of walking another 10 minutes to get to the main library. He didn’t have time to waste. He had to get started with his paper right away. He walked up to the door and opened it. When he did, a little bell rang at the doorway. 

“Just a minute!” A woman’s voice called from the back. Levi decided to wander around. There were many books crammed on the shelves. There were two computers on each side when he walked in. They looked out of place, considering they were very modern compared to the architecture of the library itself. The books were all shades of bright, vibrant colors. It was strange. From the outside, it seemed creepy and gloomy. Once he walked in, it was very cozy. The dark walls of the library contrasted the beautiful colors of the books.

Then, he saw the woman come out. She came up to the desk. He expected an elderly lady with her glasses on a chain, but he assumed this woman was a student. She was a young woman who wore thin oval glasses and her brown hair thrown up in a messy half-up-half-down ponytail. 

“Hi!” The woman said. “How can I help you?”

“I want to use a computer, please,” He announced. He glanced at her nametag which hung like a necklace around her neck. “Hange” was the name on the tag. It was strange and unordinary, but it had a nice ring to it. The name seemed to suit her.

“Sure! You are allowed up to two hours a day,” Hange explains. “You can choose whichever computer you’d like.”

The computers were unoccupied. In fact, the entire library seemed vacant except for him and the employee. 

“Does anyone actually come here?” Levi asked, setting his stuff down next to a desk, and looking her way. She looked like someone who would work at a library. 

The brunette chuckled. “You are my third visitor today!” She exclaimed proudly. It was already about 3pm. He remembered the sign in the front says “12pm-6pm weekdays”. 

Levi chuckled silently, air huffed out his nose. “How do you stay in business?”

“Well, the university thinks it’s good to have a small library in the outskirts of the campus so students have access to books and computers because the main campus library is in the center of the plaza. Sometimes we get about ten people a day, and sometimes they don’t even take anything out. Sometimes I wonder how…” She began to ramble now. She definitely has not had anyone else visit her today.

She was starting to get on his nerves. It’s been 20 minutes since he arrived, and she was still talking. He zoned out until she caught his attention.

“Hey,” She said. “What’s your name? I have to track whoever comes in to use the computers.” 

Why? No one else comes in. He noticed her clipboard with the sign-ins was blank.

“Levi Ackerman,” He announced. She scribbled his name down. “Okay, it’s 3:30 now, so you have till 5:30 if needed.” She pointed to the clock with her pen as she explained. He nodded and proceeded to walk towards the table with the computer he claimed. He sat down and began working.

He was an hour into his research when he finally threw his hands up in the air in frustration. He still couldn’t think of a topic. He groaned aloud.

Hange was leaning against the main desk, her nose stuck in a book. “How Trees Communicate” was the title. When she heard the young man groan, she looked up. 

“Is everything okay?” She asked, peering over her book at him.

“Yeah, yeah,” He mumbled. “Fine…”

Hange raised an eyebrow. She placed her bookmark at her spot, then strolled around the desk and walked over to him.

“What are you working on?” She asked, sitting in the seat next to him and put her hands on her knees, looking at him curiously. He scoffs. It was none of her business, he thought to himself. And it’s an invasion of privacy.

He was frustrated and desperate. Hoping for a miracle, he managed to tell her anyways.

 “I need a topic for my paper and I can’t think of any…” Levi began. “It needs to be based on pharmaceuticals, my major. It also needs scientific evidence to back up my research…”

She was fully absorbed in what he had to say. She was bored, so helping Levi would’ve been something to do at least. Besides, Levi was in luck. She was an avid reader, always reading about anything and everything. She was studying plants and botanicals, but she found herself frequently taking out books about cooking; religion; war; animals; and medical topics including surgery, pathophysiology, anatomy, and pharmaceuticals.

“What about how diuretics affect blood pressure?” Hange suggested. Levi was taken aback. His eyebrows furrowed, and he shook his head in confusion. “Or if anti-alzheimer drugs actually help slow the progression of Alzheimer’s? Why do you take different medications during certain stages of Alzheimer’s disease? Or how do anti-seizure medications work? That is something I ask myself all the time. You take this little pill and BOOM! You’ll be fine, no seizure! Oh, oh, oh! Or, how certain medications cause certain adverse effects? How come so many medications cause anxiety?” Her eyes started to light up as she talked. They were a dark brown, but when she started to talk, they seemed to morph to a captivating hazel. He felt he could see every color in her eyes. He saw brown and green and the little lines of her iris. Hange’s hands would move as she talked, and her smile grew wide. She couldn’t keep still. She was getting excited by coming up with all these ideas. She seemed so passionate and so willing to help; he was overwhelmed by her.

Levi was in shock. His day started off horrible. Now, he was almost glad his laptop was fucked. This woman was making his mind race with ideas. 

“Are you okay?” Hange asked for the second time within his visit there. Levi nodded slowly. “I am just… How do you know all that? Are you a med student?”

Hange chuckled and waved her hand at him. “No… I am a bookworm! Also, my mom is a nurse, so she used to teach me about nursing stuff all the time. Oh! You could write about the pathophysiology of anticholinergics! Or beta blockers! Or how the body reacts to the use of long-term steroids?”

Levi took a deep breath. He felt euphoric. He had been casually trying to think of topics since last week. All of a sudden, this woman can just ramble off hundreds of ideas? Levi smiled visibly.

“Actually… I really like the final topic you suggested. About steroids.” Levi admitted.

Hange smiled back at him. “Great! I can try to help you find some sources or books.” She directed him to open a new tab and to go to a certain database. “This is where you can find reliable sources. Over here,” She pointed to his screen at the left side. “You can add filters. You can change how old or new you’d like the sources to be, filter out certain words or phrases, et cetera.” She had been closer to him now; she scooted her chair closer so she could explain the database to him. It was hard not to look at her as she explained. She was captivating.

Levi began to type in words for his topic.

“Steroids”, “Long-term use”, “Cushing’s Disease”, “Addison’s Disease”, “Addisonian Crisis”, “Pathophysiology”.

He felt like he was finally getting somewhere. He was finally making progress.

As Levi was walking home, he couldn’t get his mind off that girl. He decided to brainstorm about his topic in his room once he got there. The thing was, though, he couldn’t think of any more ideas. He found it funny. Of course he was full of ideas and inspiration when he visited that library, but now he’s void of any.

Levi’s weekends were no different than the weekdays. He made it appoint to visit the library again the next day, Saturday. It was a sunny, cool Saturday morning. Levi had inspiration to write. He needed a computer and Hange’s ideas. When he arrived, it seemed busy. There were three other patrons at the library.  He recognized Hange right away, helping a tall blonde man with a big nose. He wondered if she was the only employee there. The man she was helping was taller than her, so she had to reach up on her toes to point to items. She was an average height, but this action made her seem shorter than she actually was.

Hange looked his way and greeted him with a toothy smile. Levi waved at her and started to head down one of the aisles of books. He was in the nonfiction section, but was lost. For now, he just casually browsed the section, but quickly got impatient. He needed Hange’s help to find books for this paper. He heard her laugh with the patron. Maybe he’s a friend, he thought to himself. Her laugh was airy and full of heart. It seemed genuine and passionate. Levi felt an urge to make her laugh, too.

She finally made her way over to him. Levi was looking down at a book when she caught his eye. “Hey, stranger!” She greeted him with a wave. “Whatcha looking for?” She placed her hands on her hips.

“I’m trying to find some sources for my paper. Steroids is the topic,” Levi explained.

“Oh, right. I remember! After you left last night, I tried to look for some books for your topic,” She said. She was trying to help me? Levi thought to himself.

She curled her finger in a “follow me” gesture and he did. She brought him to another aisle or two over from where they were. “These are the 600’s, where you’ll most likely find what you’re looking for. I found a book or two about Addison’s disease, but it’s more of a memoir. You can look around though if you’d like. Anything in the 610’s should be right up your alley.” She explained as if she was going to leave, but she didn’t. Hange looked for books with him. 

After a moment, she made a noise. “Look at this!” She exclaimed. She reached next to him to reach for a book. She was on her toes again. “Mmmm,” She moaned as she tried to reach. “Actually, I’m gonna get the step stool. I don’t think I can reach it.” Quickly, she left and came back with the stool. It looked unreliable, but Levi was sure he’d be able to prevent any accident from occurring. Hange placed it on the ground and stepped up on it, grabbing the book with ease. She stepped down with the book in her hand. This book had a white cover with a blue label and was titled “Coping with Prednisone”. Levi was surprised she even knew what prednisone was. 

“Here!” She reached it out for him to grab. He took it and looked at her face. She had that same look in her eyes. “Did you want to use the computer?” He nodded and she led him towards the front of the library. The library was small from the outside, but very deep inside. It reminded him of a forest. 

“I got your name, don’t worry,” She said, clicking her pen and writing his name down on the sheet. 

“Oops!” Hange made a quick grimace. “I added an ‘e’ at the end. I’ll just cross it out.” The statement sounded like it was addressed to herself rather than to anyone else. She crossed out the extra letter.

“Ackermane”. Levi was gonna attempt to make her laugh.

“If you thought I looked like a horse you could’ve just said so.” 

Mane, horse mane. Get it?

It felt like forever before Hange responded. She looked up at him, starting to laugh. It was a short but audible laugh. Her head nodded back and she smiled. Her cheeks turned pink and her eyes lit up for a moment. It made his heart skip a beat. It was a bad joke yet she still laughed. She chuckled. Giggled? No. Laughed lightly. Chortled? Maybe that’s the right word. Whatever it was, he wanted to do it more, maybe even more than that.

He followed her to the computers. The blonde guy she was helping earlier was on one computer. She led him to the two computers across from the other ones and sat down in the chair next to him.

“What are you doing?” Levi asked, placing the book she found for him on the table.

Her eyebrows raised, and after a moment she reacted. She waved her hands in front of her.

“I’m sorry! I thought you may have needed help. I should get back to work anyway. I gotta go through a new box of books that just came in.”

Levi looked up at her. Is she blushing? he asked himself.

“I’ll let you know if I need help.” Levi responded. She smiled at him before quickly walking away.

He started to find some evidence-based practice articles about how steroids can cause long-term side effects, especially if stopped abruptly. He made sure to keep the tabs available. He’d have to cite them later. Levi’s mind was racing with words and sentences and ideas. He had to get them down on paper. He opened Documents on the computer and started typing away.

The clicking of the keyboard soothed him. He was a pretty fast typer, he didn’t make many mistakes either. The library around him began to become quiet as his typing got louder and he got deeper in thought. Before he knew it, his two hours were up. He felt someone approach him from his right.

“Hey,” Hange said, gently tapping the table next to him. “It’s 2pm. I gotta close up.”

Levi snapped out of his focused trance with a quick head shake. “Right. Sorry.” He pulled out a flash drive from his backpack and plugged it into the computer. He transferred his document. “I got the first page done.”

Levi asked himself for a brief moment why he was sharing this information with someone he just met. Maybe since she helped him, he felt she should know.

“That’s great! It seemed like you were really focused,” Hange said, walking away to shut off some lights. Only then did he notice the white noise of the overhead lights quickly dissipate. The room buzzed with silence now. Levi and Hange were alone in the library. Suddenly, Levi felt nervous. He watched Hange walk around the room frantically, making sure to shut off all the lights and computers. She grabbed a bag. The bag was a fabric material with a patchwork design that had a long strap that hung on on her shoulder. Maybe she made it herself. She grabbed her big mess of keys and walked towards him.

“Ready?” She said. He nodded and walked outside, holding the door for her. She thanked him, locking the door behind her. They began to walk down the street slowly. 

“Want to grab lunch?” Hange asked, looking at him. Levi looked back at her. She looked pretty.

“Sure, I can eat.” Hange chuckled at that. He didn’t try, but it made her happy for a brief moment. He seemed nervous but she was too.

They decided to eat at a cute restaurant on campus called “Life in Paradis”. It was a small, dainty place with a green and yellow checkered awning. The building was made of yellow brick, and the door was bright green. There were flower pots outside on the windowsill. Again, this place seemed totally out of place in the modern aesthetic of the university. 

“This place is adorable!” Hange exclaimed. “I love the food here. You’ll love it too. They have all kinds of food here.” Levi felt a smile grow on his face. The way she talked made his heart flutter. She was always so passionate. They entered and got a table for two. This is not a date, Levi kept telling himself. Then why were his cheeks red?

They sat down and looked through a menu. Levi wasn’t extremely hungry even though he hadn’t had anything but tea this morning. He peered over his menu to look at the girl. Her hair was different today, he determined. Today all her hair was in a ponytail, and it was higher on her head. She wore a light yellow button-down with a long, light blue cardigan. Hange caught him staring at her and blushed.

“What would you two like to order?” The waitress asked him first.

“I’m gonna get a sandwich, I think,” He said, crossing his arms across his chest. “Turkey sub.” “I think I’m gonna get a chicken caesar salad,” Hange said. He nodded, grabbed the menus, and walked away.

Hange began to talk about how beautiful the flowers outside the restaurant were. They were all variants of pink, purple, yellow, and red. She described the petals and the leaves, the flowers’ origins, and all the meanings of the flowers. Levi wasn’t annoyed by her tangent this time. He actively listened to this girl talk about what fascinated her so much. He found it soothing. It made him wonder how her brain can contain all the information she was spewing at him. He enjoyed watching the way her eyes lit up when she talked. The beautiful green that blossomed at the bottom of her irises when the light hit her eyes at the right angle. The way her lips curled into a big smile when she talked to him. Her cheeks flush to a light pink when she describes the petals of the flowers or how flowers were used to express feelings when words cannot. It made his heart race. 

“Levi,” Hange said. Her affect was the opposite of earlier when she was rambling. She wore a frown on her face, feeling guilty.“I’ve been rambling… sorry. It’s such a bad habit of mine. I can talk for hours and hours.”

“Don’t apologize, four-eyes,” Levi replied, leaning his elbows and forearms on the table in a crossed position. Hange smiled at him. Levi meant it. She shouldn’t apologize for talking, especially if it’s about something she loves. The food had arrived at the table. They ate. Levi felt the need to open up to her about something. He already learned so much about her, and her presence made him feel like he can open up. 

“I like to run,” Levi said abruptly. Hange looked at him intently, chewing on a forkful of salad. “I don’t do it competitively or anything, but I enjoy running. I try to run once or twice a day.” Hange’s eyebrows raised and she nodded in agreement.

“That’s awesome!” She smiled again at him. “I like to run too. I’m really slow and get tired easily, but I enjoy feeling the wind in my hair and feeling my heart pound.” She took a bite of her meal again. Levi nodded and began to eat too. This sandwich was really good.

After talking some more about hobbies and school, they both finished their meal. The waiter brought over the check. Hange reached into her pocket for her wallet.

“What do you think you’re doing?” Levi asked. Hange furrowed her brows.

“I invited you out to lunch. I will pay,” Hange determined, her wallet now in her hands.

“No,” Levi said too quickly. “I will pay. It’s the least I can do. You helped me with my paper after all.”

The bickering lasted a very long minute. Before she got to think of the idea, Levi grabbed the checkbook and shoved his card inside before handing it to the waiter. Hange looked surprised. She sighed, putting her wallet away.

“Thank you, Levi. But you really didn’t have to.”

“I wanted to.”

In all honesty, Hange didn’t have much money. She worked at that library four times a week, but the money she made went towards paying off her tuition. She really wanted to treat this man, her new friend. She wasn’t sure if he thought the same way about her. Did he consider her his friend? She felt slightly embarrassed. She did most of the talking and felt like she was annoying him. Maybe he just wanted to pay so she would lay off. 

But the truth is, Levi felt the opposite way of how she was thinking. He was interested to hear more from her. He was addicted to the way his heart raced when he saw her.

Over the next couple of days, Levi would go to that library whenever he was available. He knew it was closed on Sunday, so he went Monday and Tuesday to the library. Fortunately, he got his first batch of money from the brats that fried his computer. He received $100. Of course it was not enough, but it was a start. Wednesday the 17th came around. This specific day was a wild card. The weather was unpredictable. Levi entered the library just in time; it had started to downpour. The little bell rang as he entered the library. To his surprise, Hange was not working that day. There was a boy behind the counter who was tall and had a brown bowl cut hairstyle.  He almost thought about turning around and leaving when he realized she wasn’t there. The rain charged towards the earth viciously, so he decided to seek shelter in the small library. It almost looked like a hurricane. He felt his mood change into a bad one. He didn’t remember to ask how often she worked. 

“Hi there!” The man said. His name tag read “Moblit”. That’s a dumb name.

“I wanna use a computer,” Levi muttered, walking up to the main desk.

“Okay. Name?” Moblit grabbed the clipboard and a pen.

“Levi Ackerman.”

“Oh, I see you’ve been here before. A lot, actually.” Levi scoffed and rolled his eyes at his comment. He turned around, picked a computer, and sat down. He felt really stupid to not ask her about her schedule.

The two hours he spent working on his paper was incredibly slow. He didn’t get much done that day. He had writer’s block. He was almost done, so he didn’t worry about it too much. He didn’t know Hange’s schedule. He knew she worked Friday, the day they met; Saturday; Monday, and Tuesday. Maybe she only worked four times a week? Before he knew it, he asked Moblit aloud. It was almost an accident.

“Uh, she’ll be in on Friday,” Moblit replied. He probably couldn’t give out that information to some creep who began visiting daily with an attitude. He muttered a “thanks” before finishing up and heading out. The weather was holding up for now, so he decided to make a run for it. He didn’t say goodbye to Moblit.

He didn’t have an umbrella. The sun was trying to shine through the dark, eerie clouds. It wasn’t trying hard enough. He heard thunder rumbling in the distance.

Levi realized that this girl was all he thought about the past few days. Something about her enticed him. Something about her eyes and her presence drew him towards her. His heart skipped a beat whenever she’d graze his hand on accident, or even when she just talked to him. She made him happy. He hadn’t had too many friends in college. Although they just met last week, he felt a deep connection with her. 

Suddenly, the sun poked through the clouds for a brief moment. The world lit up. It was at that moment he recognized a familiar face. Hange. She was walking towards him. She grinned when she saw him. She wore a fitted black t-shirt and baggy, light blue jeans. 

“Levi!” She exclaimed. “I forgot my jacket in the library, so I came down to get it.” 

“You didn’t tell me you weren’t working today.” Is all Levi said. Once he said it, he realized how creepy it must’ve sounded. A man she just met happens to go to this library to work on his project every day, who happens to come up with multiple reasons to interact with her. Maybe she thought he was a perv.

“Ehh!” She sighed. “I’m sorry! I thought I told you I was off today.” Levi shook his head. The comment itself may have sounded rude, but it wasn’t. She genuinely felt bad. “Walk with me.” Levi followed. Guess not.

“I don’t work Wednesday’s and Thursday’s. Well I’m not supposed to be,” Hange explained. “Mobilt, one of my co-workers, is always calling out sick. So I basically run the place.” They walked towards the library again and entered. 

“Hey, Moblit. How’s it going?” Hange said in a normal tone, heading towards the back of the library. Moblit responded briefly, following Hange. Levi decided to hang back, he figured it was a secure area. He looked around awkwardly.

“Hange, you didn’t tell me you had a boyfriend,” Moblit said, following her towards the back. 

Hange chuckled nervously. “He’s not my boyfriend,” she said bluntly. “He’s just a friend.” Moblit scoffed, rolling his eyes. “If he’s not your boyfriend, how come his mood entirely changed once he saw you?”

Hange found her jacket, folding it over her forearm. “Huh?”

“He was, like, in a bad mood when he came in. He used the computer but he seemed to be pissed or something. Now that he’s with you, he seems… tolerable.”

Hange laughed, feeling her cheeks blush. “It’s nothing like that. People have bad days, you know.”

Hange rolled her eyes and smirked, then headed towards the front of the library. “Ready?” Levi nodded and turned around.

“See you Friday,” Moblit called out. “See ya.” Hange replied.

The two started walking down the street. The air smelt of rain, and the ground was wet from the rain earlier. “Which building is your dorm in?” Hange asked. He was a bit surprised she asked him that, and she was so direct about it.

“Saint Maria,” He replied. She smiled. “Me too! I can’t believe I haven’t seen you around!” The wind picked up and the sky turned darker than before. They both looked up. “If you can’t make it to the library, you can use my desktop in my dorm room,” Hange offered. Levi’s cheeks turned bright red. 

“Thanks, maybe tomorrow I can stop by,” Levi said. It was more of him thinking aloud than a statement. It was too late though, Hange already heard him. He could’ve sworn he didn’t say it aloud.

“That’s fine! I only have a class early tomorrow morning. Come by around 11, okay? My room number is 506.” Levi nodded. Thunder rolled and sounded closer now. They were almost at the dormitory building when it started to downpour. The rain was forcefully coming down on the two. Levi groaned in annoyance. He hated being in the rain. He hated being wet; he hated the wet socks and how gross he felt when it rained. He would’ve started to run to the building to seek cover, but he was taken aback by his new friend.

She was soaked and embracing it. She lifted her head up to face the sky and she laughed. It was loud, happy, genuine, and it took Levi’s breath away. Hange reached her hands out wide and spun around. He saw a strike of lightning light up the sky. He stared at her in awe. His heart swelled. Levi smiled big. After laughing, Hange looked at Levi and shared the look that he wore just a few moments ago. She loved his smile. She wished to make him smile more. She was also determined to make him laugh, too.

She grabbed his hand. “Let’s take cover!” And she pulled him into the dormitory hall. Saint Maria’s hall was beautiful. It had ceiling-to-floor glass pane windows that were always crystal clear. There was a big black modern chandelier that hung from the ceiling. It contained visible light bulbs. Hange secretly loved it. There were the same big, yellow, leather couches in the living room as there were in the study area on his floor. They both wiped their feet off on the big rug in the entryway. 

“I love the rain,” Hange deduced, turning her head to look at him. As if Levi couldn’t tell. Her hand was still holding his. Levi looked up at her. “I like it, too.”

You internally groaned when you stepped outside, feeling the heat rays beating down on you. It was hot enough as is, but the long sleeves and male slacks that you wore made it feel twenty times more hot than it actually was. The other students sent you a weird look as they passed, whispering amongst themselves. And why wouldn’t they? You never wore anything but long sleeves and pants, even on the hottest of days. You didn’t understand why they still acted so surprised; you had been dressing like this since your first year, and now, here you were in the middle of your second year.

You sighed, feeling like the weight of the world was beating down on you. You readjusted the bag on your shoulder before continuing towards the school gate. Honestly, you didn’t want to return home; you’d rather be anywhere else in the world, but you knew the consequences for returning home late, even if it was just by a minute or two.

You were so caught up in your thoughts that you didn’t notice two piercing eyes threatening to burn holes in your side.

When you were finally out of his sight, Kaidoh let out a hiss. His body was so jumbled with different emotions that he couldn’t even put a name to everything he was currently feeling. He had been your seatmate since your first year, almost as if fate had wanted the two of you to remain close. To further push that idea, he lived in your neighborhood, just a few houses down.

You had never been close with each other, but you did consider each other a friend. On the rare occasion that he didn’t have practice, the two of you would walk home together in silence – awkward for him, but peaceful for you. You often got paired up to do assignments together, as well.

Kaidoh didn’t know when it had started, he just knew that it had at some point. Somewhere along the road, he had started to develop feelings for you. He wanted to get to know you, but his attempts always failed. He never knew what to ask or how to ask, and when he finally did get up the courage, you usually just answered with a short or vague answer. You never meant to be rude, but you already had so much weighing down your mind that you just never realized what he was attempting to do.

Honestly, Kaidoh felt pretty torn about the whole situation. He wasn’t too interested in dating, since tennis is his first love, and he had never paid much attention to girls. Even so, he had always been sure that he was straight and only liked girls. So why did he fall for his male classmate? He couldn’t wrap his mind around it. Was he gay? Was he just curious?

The regulars easily noticed the change in Kaidoh over the past few weeks. How could they not? They spent practically every single day with the second year. Hell, they probably knew him better than he knew himself! And so, the Seigaku regulars set out on a quest to find the source of his distraction and help him solve the problem that he hadn’t yet realized he had.

“Ouch! You elbowed me in the ribs, Eiji!”

“Nya~ Sorry, Oishi!”

“Not so loud, senpai!”

“Probability of being detected: 100%”

“Saa, I think you’re right, Inui.”

A tick mark appeared under Kaidoh’s right eye as he heard the noise coming from the bushes behind him. His hands balled into fists at his side, his knuckles turning white from the restraint it took not to yell at them and hit Momoshiro – because not even Kaidoh would go so far as to hit his senpai.

“This is ridiculous,”

“Oi, Echizen!” Momo tried to grab onto the first year before he could leave their hiding place, but he was too quick and easily dodged the attempt.

Ryoma approached his senpai was a blank expression. “Who is he?”

Kaidoh narrowed his eyes at the shorter boy. “What?”

“That boy you were watching. Who is he?”

The viper felt his heart rate increase, though he couldn’t tell if it was because of you being mentioned or the fact that the tennis team had seen him staring you down as you left – for all he knew, it could be a combination of both. “N-None of your business!”

The regulars watched as the viper quickly stomped away from the group.

“Probability that the boy is the cause of his distraction: 99.9%”

“Do you know who he is, Inui?” Fuji questioned, tilting his head to the side.

Inui paled, pushing up his glasses with an index finger. He was too ashamed to admit that he didn’t have any information on the boy in question. You were an enigma, even to the data specialist.

“How interesting~” Fuji chuckled after gauging his reaction.

“I know he’s a second year.” Momo supplied, putting his hand on his chin. “I think I’ve seen him in Mamushi’s class before.”

“Data,” Inui muttered to himself, quickly scribbling away in his little black book. The others sweatdropped at his reaction, while Fuji simply laughed.

“Well, if we’re going to solve this problem, we’ll just have to learn more about him!” Oishi declared with a smile.

If you had known about the sudden storm that would descend upon you like the wrath of the gods, you probably would have just fled the country, but you were completely clueless about the plans of the Seigaku regulars.

The next morning, you quietly gathered your things and got dressed for school. Your mother was still sleeping, and you knew there’d be hell to pay if you woke her up by being too loud. It didn’t help that she slept as light a feather – you breathe wrong and the woman wakes up!

You slowly descended the stairs, careful to avoid that one creaky step in the middle – it had been your downfall many times in the past, and you had learned the hard way to avoid it at all costs. You made it downstairs without a problem and set your bag gently on the floor by the door.

‘Almost free’, you thought. All you had to do was make a quick piece of toast and then you’d be out of there. You crossed your arms as you waited, your finger tapping your upper arm impatiently as you watched the timer on the toaster oven. You easily caught it before it could ding, pulling out the hot piece of toast and placing it onto a paper towel. You celebrated mentally, happy to have gotten out of the house without waking the beast that lived upstairs, but it seems you celebrated too soon.

Right as you reached for the door handle, you heard your name being screamed as your mother came rushing down the stairs. Her hair was tussled and messy from sleep and her eyes were narrowed angrily. Your mind screamed at you to run – the door was literally within arm’s reach – but you were frozen to the spot.

“You didn’t feed the damn cat and he woke me up!” She screamed at you.

Your eyes glanced down at her feet where a light gray, pudgy cat was sitting. If they could have expressions, you were sure that his would be smug for getting you into trouble.

You gulped down the piece of toast in your mouth before speaking. “Y-You said not to go in your room…”

“Don’t backtalk me!” She grabbed your arm tightly and you winced in pain. “You know you’re supposed to feed the cat, stupid girl!” She ripped the hat off your head and threw it to the ground. “Your hair is starting to get too long! Boys are supposed to have short hair, not long, get it cut before you walk in this house again!”

“I-I don’t have any money…” You mumbled pathetically, the stinging in your arm causing tears to cloud your vision.

Before you could blink, she backhanded you, sending you crashing back against the door behind you. You winced in pain when you hit the rather large bruise on your back. “You expect me to pay? After everything you’ve done?”

Tears rolled down your cheeks as your face stung in unison with your arm. Your hands clenched around your slacks as you cried out, “What have I done, mother? What have I done to deserve this?”

The look your mother sent you was terrifying, full of hatred and malice. She stepped closer, leaning over so her face was inches away from your own. “You killed your father. He died because he wanted a son! You were nothing but a disappointment! He killed himself because of you!”

“He died in a car crash,” You tried to reason with her.

She spit in your face before standing up straight. “He never would have been in that car if you hadn’t made him leave. He was tired of you!”

Your whole body was shaking, your face a red blotchy mess as tears fell from your eyes and sobs wracked your body. You were in so much pain, you didn’t know what to do. You felt so lost, so useless.

“Get out of my house!”

You scrambled up as quick as you could, nearly tripping as you rushed out the door. You only made it a block or so before you tripped, your body falling to the heated pavement with a thud. It was the middle of the week, so most of the surrounding houses were empty, the area quiet.

You didn’t try to get up. What would be the point? You certainly couldn’t walk into school like that, there’d be too many questions and you couldn’t just say you tripped. If they called your mother, you knew your punishment would be even worse.

Your hand clawed at the pavement as fresh tears blurred your eyes and fresh sobs began to shake your body. You didn’t understand why this was happening to you. Had you done something in a previous life to warrant such punishment? You felt so weak, so drained. You were beginning to wonder if all of this abuse was worth it.

‘No, I can’t think like that!’, you pounded the ground with your fist. You were not going to let your mother win. You would remain strong. One day this will all be over and you’ll be far away from her, living a normal and happy life. You couldn’t let go of that hope – it was all you had.

“O-Oi!” A voice stuttered from behind you. “Are you okay?!”

You looked over your shoulder to see a tall figure, but the tears blurred his face. You quickly swiped them away with the back of your hand. It was your seatmate, Kaidoh, who was now kneeling beside you with a worried and panicked expression on his face.

Of all the people to see you in such a state, it just had to be the boy who had stolen your heart all those years ago. You figured you didn’t stand a chance with him, though. He thought you were a boy, after all, and your mother would never let you be happy. You still had four and half more years before you could rebuild your life and find happiness.

He grabbed your upper arm to get your attention and you winced, making him release you. His grip had been gentle, but he had grabbed the same spot that your mother had. On top of that, the old bruise from a week ago hadn’t fully disappeared and was still a little sore to the touch.

“S-Sorry,” He muttered, his cheeks taking on a slight hue of pink.

“It’s not your fault,” You tried to smile, but couldn’t find the energy.

“What hap – ”

“Aren’t you late for tennis practice, Kaidoh-kun?” You cut him off, hoping to distract him from the current situation.

He paled a bit when you reminded him of his lateness, but he didn’t leave like you had expected. “I can’t leave you like this!”

“I just tripped, that’s all.” Your voice did little to help convince him – it was monotone, lifeless.

He scowled at you. “Do you think I’m an idiot?”

“W-What?” You stuttered in surprise, eyes wide at the question. That wasn’t what you meant at all! “O-Of course not!”

“That mark on your face is from a hand, not the pavement. Someone hit you.”

Your heart was racing, thumping loudly in your ear as you scrambled to come up with a lie he would actually believe. “I… I was mugged!”

His eyes grew wide like saucers at the information. “M-Mugged?!”

“Yeah! Yeah, that’s what happened! I refused to give up my bag so the guy slapped me!”

“We need to call the police!”

“No!” You hurried to your feet in a panic, only to trip over yourself. Strong arms wrapped around your middle, pulling you into a firm chest rather than the pavement. You cried out in pain, begging him to let you go. As soon as he did, you bolted away from him. He was too stunned to react in time.

You stared at your face in the mirror, analyzing the large red welt on the side of your face. The color had dulled a bit, but it was still quite noticeable. Oh, how you wished you had makeup to cover it with, but since you were supposed to be a boy, your mother had forbidden you from wearing any type of makeup – even chapstick was forbidden.

“I guess I’ll just have to stick to the mugging story…” You muttered to yourself with a frown. You dug around in your bag, producing a bottle of pills. They were an over the counter pain medication that you had saved up for by helping the older woman next door weed her garden. Your back was killing you and you needed relief. You hoped it would help for the various bruises scattered across your torso and arms, as well.

Taking a deep breath, you threw your bag onto your shoulder and left the washroom, quickly thanking the school nurse before scurrying away. By the time you had reached the school, two of your four morning classes had ended.

The bell for the third period rang and you increased your pace, thanking the gods that your classroom was close to the nurse’s office. Your teacher had already begun roll call by the time you stepped inside, earning a glare from the man as he ordered you to take a seat. You were so thankful that he hadn’t given you detention.

You fell into your seat with a soft sigh, pulling out the book you needed for the class. It wasn’t even noon and you already felt completely exhausted. The hair on the back of your neck stood on end and you froze, slowly turning to the side to see a pissed off Kaidoh glaring at you. This wasn’t your first time seeing him angry – it was, after all, quite easy to get under the boy’s skin. But you had never seen him this angry. You wondered how you hadn’t missed the murderous aura he was giving off the second you sat down. You also noticed how the other students had quietly moved their desks farther away from the boy, clearly scared by how angry he was.

You swallowed hard, quickly averting your eyes to your desk. What were you going to do? He was clearly angry that you had blown him off and run away from him… how would you explain it? Had he kept to his word and called the police?

Kaidoh couldn’t lie and say he wasn’t angry. He was livid, but not particularly at his seatmate. He was angry that you had been mugged and acted like it was nothing. Someone had hurt you, and he wanted the bastard to pay for what he had done. He was angry that he had allowed someone to hurt the person he loved!

Kaidoh’s face turned bright red when he realized what he had just thought. Was he really in love with you? He had never cared so much about anyone else before, nor had he ever been so angry about something that happened to another person. Why were you so special?

He quickly threw his head down onto the desk, making an audible THUMP, but the surrounding students were too scared to say anything. They thought he was just getting more annoyed, but in reality, he was just trying to hide his blushing face.

Time seemed to pass by incredibly slow that day, though it probably didn’t help that you glanced at the clock every minute or two. You just wanted the day to be over so you could crawl under your covers and hide from the world. You had managed to successfully dodge Kaidoh the rest of the day, but he was looking determined not to let you slip away this time.

The bell finally rang and you sprang up, quickly grabbing your pre-packed bag and making a dash for the door. Kaidoh tried to grab the back of your uniform but he was an inch short and hit the floor instead, cursing loudly as he tried to chase after you. Your attention had diverted over your shoulder just long enough to judge the distance between the two of you.

Feeling confident that you had escaped, you looked forward again – only, you didn’t see the open doorway. Instead, you ran right into a white wall, sending you flying back onto your butt. Your classmates laughed at you, stepping over you and around the object that had stopped you.

Turns out it wasn’t a wall – it was the second year, Momoshiro, from the class next door. He blinked down at you curiously before rubbing the back of his head sheepishly.

“Sorry about that,”

You stared at his extended hand, your mind still processing the events that had just taken place. By the time you realized, though, it was too late. Kaidoh was now blocking the door, glaring between you and Momo.

“Watch where you’re going, idiot.” He hissed.

“Huh?! He ran into me!” Momo defended himself.

“You should still watch where you’re going!”

“You wanna fight?!”

“Bring it on!”

You tried to crawl past the bickering boys, but Kaidoh was determined not to let you get away. He grabbed your arm and hauled you to your feet – thankfully, that arm didn’t have any bruises. Well, it did, but not in the place he had grabbed.

“You’re coming with me!”

“I-I can’t. I have to get home.” You tried to pry his hand away but he was too strong. “L-Let go of me!” You looked to Momo for help and he nodded. You thought you were saved… until Momo gently grabbed your other arm and helped his friend drag you out of the classroom. “W-Wait a minute! Where are you taking me? Let me go right this instant!”

Your demands went unanswered. Kaidoh didn’t even acknowledge that you were speaking, and Momoshiro only offered a grin. You had hoped that the students gathered in the halls would intervene, but they only stared like it was a normal thing.

‘What is wrong with these people?!’, you cried, ‘Mother is going to kill me tonight. This time for sure…’

You took a deep breath to calm your racing thoughts. You had to be calm and collected in order to think of a way to escape this. Your eyes glanced at each of their grips. Kaidoh’s right hand was holding your wrist, while his left was resting across your arm. Momo was holding your left arm, just below the elbow. You quickly realize that they were gripping the fabric of your long-sleeved shirt more than they were your arm.

You had your plan, but you knew it was going to be painful and difficult.

Taking another deep breath to calm your nerves, you slammed the heels of your shoes into the ground before sinking down. Your body was bent like you were about to do a high dive, allowing your arms to slip out of the sleeves of the sweatshirt as the boys kept walking. You felt the material slip over your head and you dashed in the opposite direction, trying to ignore the stinging in your arms.

You were very much aware of the air whipping around your now exposed skin; it felt weird to you since you hadn’t allowed your skin to feel any outside air for several years now.

“Get back here!”

You gulped, pushing your legs to run faster. This was your last chance – if they caught you now, your secret would be exposed. Maybe this hadn’t been such a good plan after all…

You turned the corner and quickly ducked into the first classroom you found, sliding the door shut as quickly and quietly as you could. Your heart hammered against your chest as their pounding steps drew closer, but they didn’t stop. They continued on until finally fading into the distance.

You didn’t even get the chance to calm down before someone called your name. You spun around to find Fuji Shuusuke, a third year, looking at you curiously from his position near the window. You had entered the photography room, the place that he frequently visited. You gulped down your nervousness and tried to sound calm and not like you had just escaped two angry and possibly crazy second years.

“H-Hello, Fuji-senpai.”

“Is everything alright?” He questioned with a small smile, setting his camera on the desk beside his bag.

“Of course! I thought this was a different room, I’ll be going now. Please excuse me!” You bowed, whipping back around.

“Hold it,” His voice was firm and it sent a chill down your spine.

“Y-Yes?”

“What happened to your arms?”

“What?” Your head whipped around so fast you were surprised you hadn’t given yourself whiplash. The tensai’s eyes were open, a sight you had never seen before, and he was staring at a rather large bruise on the back of your upper arm. He was frowning and even looked a little angry. “Oh, umm… I’m really… clumsy.”

His eyes narrowed as he approached you, gently grabbing your shoulder to turn you to face him. As your body was exposed to the light pouring in through the window, more bruises and scars became apparent to him, lining your skin like a bad rash.

You wanted to cry. No matter what lie you came up with, you knew it would be useless against this boy. Anyone else, maybe, but not the genius Fuji Shuusuke.

You were tired.

Tired of scrambling to make up lies.

Tired of hiding.

Tired of being scared.

Tired of hurting.

Tears welled up in your eyes, slowly pouring down your cheeks. Your shoulders shook from the effort it took to keep from sobbing out loud. Fuji called your name gently and you lost it, throwing your arms around his waist and burying your face in his white shirt. You didn’t care that you looked like a mess. You didn’t care that you didn’t really know this boy. You just wanted someone to hold you, someone to comfort you, someone to care.

His eyes widened in surprise for several reasons, but he quickly and gently wrapped his arms around you. He rubbed your hair and told you it would be okay, which only made you cry louder.

Your whole life was one big mess. How could things possibly be okay?

Kaidoh was ten times more frustrated when he reached the tennis courts. Even Momoshiro seemed tense.

“You’re both late,” Tezuka announced, arms folded across his chest and a stern look on his face.

“Sorry buchou,” Momo apologized. Kaidoh only hissed.

“Fifty laps,”

The two second years complied without their usual complaints, worrying the ever motherly vice-captain. “Something doesn’t feel right, Tezuka. Fuji isn’t here either.”

Yes, even the stoic captain had noticed the strange thickness hanging in the air today, like something bad was bound to happen.

A third year girl came running up to them, holding up her index finger as she tried to catch her breath. She was a bookworm, not an athlete, but because the information was deemed important, she decided to run to the courts instead of a nicely paced walk. Fuji really owed her one.

When she finally caught her breath, she regarded them with a shy smile. “Fuji-kun asked me to pass along a message to you, Tezuka-san. He said that something important has come up and he will be missing practice today and in the morning.”

Oishi looked at the girl with worry. “Did he say why?”

She shook her head and frowned. “No, but he seemed really upset.”

“Thank you.” Tezuka bowed and she took that as her sign to leave. She bowed to the two boys before turning around and walking leisurely back to her classroom. “There’s nothing we can do now. We’ll have to trust Fuji.”

Oishi bit his lip, hoping that nothing serious had happened.

You sniffled, tugging awkwardly at the jacket that now covered your body. Fuji had been kind enough to give you his Seigaku jacket to hide your arms since your sweater had been nowhere to be found. You glanced at his back since he was walking a few steps in front of you. You felt nervous, to say the least, and wondered if this was really okay.

He stopped in front of his house, pushing open the gate for you. He gave you an encouraging smile as you passed him, heading toward his front door. Why in the world had you agreed to this? You barely even knew this boy!

It was true, you were terrified, but not because of him or the thought of staying at his house.

No, the thought of returning home terrified you and, somehow, Fuji had realized that.

“Don’t worry, my family is very kind.” He commented, trying to ease your nervous mind as he pushed his front door open. You followed him inside, setting your shoes beside his own before following him into the kitchen.

A woman stood at the stove making dinner, humming softly to herself. Another woman, older than Fuji but younger than the first, was sitting at the table flipping through a magazine.

“I’m home,”

“Welcome home, Shuu – ” The older woman paused when she turned around, smiling at the girl beside him. “Shuusuke! You didn’t tell me you were bringing a friend over.”

“Saa, it was a bit last minute, kaa-san.”

The other woman grinned. “You finally got yourself a girlfriend, huh? She’s cute!”

You paled at the woman’s words, ‘H-How did she know I’m a girl…?’

“She’s just a friend, Yumiko-nee.”

Your wide eyes quickly snapped to him, ‘He knew too?!’

As if reading your mind, he shot you a grin before returning to his mother. “She was locked out of her house and her parents are out of town. Can she stay here tonight?”

His mother smiled. “Of course she can! Dinner will be ready soon, dear, I hope you like curry.”

“Y-Yes ma’am. Thank you.”

“Hmm, I’m curious though.” Yumiko put a manicured nail to her bottom lip as she looked you up and down. “Why are you dressed as a boy?”

“Don’t be rude to our guest, Yumiko.” Their mother scolded. “Shuusuke, why don’t you two go up to your room and get started on your homework? I’ll call you once dinner is done.”

The boy nodded, gripping your wrist lightly and leading you up the stairs to his bedroom. You remained quiet until you were safely inside his room, the door locked behind you. You turned toward him but refused to meet his eyes. Instead, you decided that his carpet was worth inspecting.

“How long have you known?”

“Hmm?”

“That I’m… a girl,”

“Ah,” he sat down at his desk with a smile. “I’ve had my suspicions for a while, but it was confirmed when you hugged me.”

A pink hue lit up your cheeks. You knew instantly what he meant; I felt your boobs against my chest when you hugged me. You quickly kneeled down, covering your face with your hands. You muttered out an apology, but it was too muffled for him to understand. You repeated yourself, but he still didn’t get it.

Fuji kneeled down in front of you and gently removed your hands. “One more time,” he prodded.

“I’m sorry,”

“For what?”

“All the trouble I’ve caused. Sorry for breaking down in front of you like that. I’m sorry for upsetting Kaidoh-kun, too…

Something flickered through his azure eyes. “I’m sure you didn’t upset Kaidoh, and you’ve caused me no trouble at all. We’re friends, after all, ne?”

“W-We are?”

“Yes,”

For the first time in years, you smiled – a real, genuine smile. You began to cry again, but you weren’t sad, you were happy.

Fuji never did pressure you about your bruises, but you had this feeling in the pit of your stomach that he had figured it out himself. You had sat down with his family for dinner, and they were all very kind to you. After dinner, Fuji had helped you with some of your homework, explaining things in a way that made you understand how to solve them on your own. When it was time to go to sleep, he kindly gave you his bed while he made a little blanket mattress on the floor. You had refused at first but quickly learned that the tensai is a stubborn one indeed. That night, you slept peacefully, without a single nightmare about your mother entering in the dead of night to harm or, even worse, kill you.

You couldn’t help but wonder if that was what home was supposed to feel like.

When morning came, you found yourself alone in Fuji’s room. The blankets had been picked up and neatly folded next to the closet. You were crawling out of bed when the door opened and the eldest Fuji sibling entered the room.

“I was just coming to wake you up.” She smiled. “Shuusuke had to get to morning practice, but he wanted me to tell you that you can take a shower and change into his clothes if you want.”

You expected her to ask again about dressing like a boy, but she didn’t.

“Once you’re done, come downstairs and get some breakfast, then I’ll drive you to school, okay?” She winked at you and left the room before you could protest.

You sat there for a moment, wondering if all this was just a dream before you finally did as you were told. You grabbed one of his uniforms from the closet and headed to the bathroom. A towel was sitting on the counter inside. You tried to avoid looking in the mirror as you stripped, but your gaze snapped to it before you could stop yourself. Your entire body was covered with bruises and scars, each at a different stage of healing. The most prominent ones were on your thighs where your mother had kicked you repeatedly for not washing the dishes properly. Leg wounds were easier to hide, your mother had said.

You tore your gaze away with a sigh and unwrapped the bandages that bound your boobs before stepping under the hot water. You truly didn’t want to get your hopes up, but more than anything, you wished this would last forever. Reality is cruel, though, and you can’t run away from your problems forever.

You wrung your hands nervously in your lap, refusing to look up in case you met eyes with passing students. They were all gawking at the fancy red car that Yumiko drove. What would they say when they saw you stepping out of it? That was more attention than you wanted.

Yumiko patted your shoulder gently and offered you an encouraging smile. “Go on, you don’t want to be late.”

“Thank you, Fuji-san.”

“Oh please, Fuji-san is my mother. Just call me Yumiko, okay?” She grinned.

Despite yourself, you smiled back. “Thank you,”

“Have a good day!”

You waved at her as she drove away. As expected, the passing students stopped and stared at you, but for the first time, you honestly didn’t care. You were experiencing a lot of firsts lately.

The classroom was nearly empty when you entered – it was rare to be so early to class, but you were grateful that there were fewer eyes to stare at you as you took your seat. You glanced at the empty desk beside your own. How would things go once Kaidoh arrived? You wondered if he was still angry at you. You’d make sure to apologize to him after school.

One by one, students start piling in, not even noticing your presence. Kaidoh was one of the last and he stopped by your desk instead of sitting. He didn’t particularly look angry. Actually, you thought he looked rather nervous.

“Good morning, Kaidoh-kun.” You offered after a few minutes of silence.

“Good morning,” He echoed. “C-Can we talk? After school, I mean.”

With the intention of apologizing for your behavior, you agreed, noting how relieved he looked afterward. The rest of the day went by normally. Well, as normal as it could be at Seishun Gakuen.

At least you didn’t get kidnapped again. Though, as the day neared a close, you were increasingly becoming nervous. You knew what you wanted to talk to Kaidoh about, but what did he want to talk about?

The final bell rang and you started to gather your things, surprised to find Kaidoh ready to go. The two of you left the classroom without a word, walking silently beside one another until you had broken free from the sea of students trying to get home. He led you toward the tennis courts, but stopped a few feet short, turning to face you.

You stared each other down.

“I’m sorry!”

Your voices overlapped, bringing color to both of your faces.

“Y-You can go first,” He offered, feeling his heart race. He knew what he was going to say, but he hadn’t quite gotten the courage to say it yet.

“I’m sorry for the way I acted yesterday. You were just trying to help me but I ran away from you and avoiding you… that was rude of me. Please forgive me, Kaidoh-kun.” You bowed.

He hadn’t expected that. “I-I’m the one who’s sorry! You know, for trying to kidnap you… I umm… I was just…”

You tilted your head to the side and he mentally cursed. Why did you have to be so cute?

“I-I wanted you to know… I mean… You see… I…”

“Just tell him you like him already, mamushi!” Came Momo’s voice from a nearby bush.

Your face flushed. Had you heard him correctly?

“DAMN YOU MOMOSHIRO!” Kaidoh cried, hands balled into fists at his side. He was about to run after him when your soft voice made him freeze.

“Is it true?” You questioned, looking up at him through your lashes. “Do you… like me, Kaidoh-kun?”

His face turned a brighter red and he swallowed hard. Time to man up, Kaoru! “Yes, I like you very much! Please be my boyfriend!”

The regulars, no longer hiding in the bush, all cheered at his bravery.

You bit your lip, wondering if this would be easier without an audience. You figured it would be just as hard either way. “I like you, too, Kaidoh-kun.”

He felt so much relief, but quickly tensed when you continued.

“But… there’s something you should know first.” You glanced at Fuji, wondering if you should tell him. The tensai nodded with encouragement.

“W-What is it?” Kaidoh glanced at Fuji before looking back at you.

“I can’t be your boyfriend because… I’m a girl,”

Time seemed to freeze at that moment. Everyone stared at you with wide eyes, even Ryoma. The exceptions were, of course, Fuji, who already knew, and Tezuka. You assumed Fuji had told him, he had figured it out on his own, or he really was just emotionless.

You swallowed your nerves. “K-Kaidoh-kun?”

The sound of your voice was the kick that the clock needed to start time again.

“YOU’RE A GIRL?!” Momoshiro and Eiji cried out in unison.

“Mada mada dane,”

“Don’t act like you knew, Echizen/Ochibi!” They screamed in unison again.

You ignored their bickering, biting your lip as you looked at Kaidoh. He still hadn’t moved.

Suddenly he bowed low, his back forming a straight line. “Please be my girlfriend!”

The corners of your lips tugged up into a smile and tears filled your eyes. He still wanted you. You were so happy!

“Che, way to go, Mamushi. You made her cry. That’s not cool, not cool at all.”

“Mou~! Apologize right now, Kaidoh!”

“Mada mada dane, Kaidoh-senpai.”

“S-Shut up!” He yelled at them before turning back to you. He tried to apologize but the words stopped on his tongue when you threw your arms around his middle, burying your face in the crook of his neck. You could feel the heat radiating off his skin, and you were sure that yours matched. Almost unsurely, he wrapped his own arms around you, resting his head on top of your own.

Fuji smiled at the scene before him. You deserved happiness, and you certainly did not deserve the things that happened to you. He decided then and there that he would help you out and save you from your abusive life. A part of that responsibility was given to Kaidoh because he knew that no matter what, whether the second year knew your situation or not, he would always protect his girlfriend.

My initial exposure to the doom, stoner, sludge, and drone scene came back in 2016, when Sleep, Boris, and Sunn O))) were the showcase located at The Mohawk. It was a legendary set that didn’t hold my appreciation until far after I engrossed myself in the taste of these subgenres. I left that show feeling uncertain and relatively uncomfortable at the time, as my background and taste was based on technical, melodical, fast, or grind and slam or the like. It wasn’t until the moment that I met my future brother-in-law (who mentioned that he missed this very show during a conversation on our music tastes and was super bummed) that I was assigned to explore all that Sunn’s catalog had to offer.

I had given Monoliths a few playthroughs while driving through town to wash out the commotion of traffic and keep my nerves on track (something I quickly observed provided quite a relaxing atmosphere during a commute). I ended up buying the vinyl a week or so after that, just to drone out to and find new experiences through each listen, without any outside pressure or any specific task that required my full and complete attention. I was finding this one LP to be an incredibly effective form of therapy for a variety of different occurrences I was dealing with in life at the time, and it is currently one of my all-time most cherished possessions.

My little listening sessions went by over the next few weeks and months, when Life Metal was announced. I couldn’t be more elated at the idea of being able to add more material to my collection of personal therapy. Fresh, new frequencies that the world and I can experience together. Fuck me, man. Upon my first initial reaction, it was game on. That moment was as real as it gets. Every day -- in the truck, at work -- there was a fucking will and there was a way to get my ass to see them live again in my lifetime, with full presence, understanding, and utmost appreciation to make up for the last.

Months Later

Then came the announcement: September 2nd, 2019 -- Sunn O))) at Emo's Austin on East Riverside Drive in Austin, Texas.

You kidding me? Like fucking for real? *instant ticket purchase* After the weeks pass by, it’s game day. Could I get something out of this show that I had only heard about? That pure experience of saturation? That body high that I missed out on before? The full understanding and appreciation? These were just a few thoughts that I was getting increasingly anxious and excited over.

Accompanying me was my sister, brother-in law, his close friend, and some friends that I’ve accrued over the years within the local scene -- all there to share the night with me, something I would equate to one of the most incredible musical experiences of my life.

Open Doors, Setting

Upon doors open, there was a line at the merch stand that lengthed from the back of the venue all the way past the entry. This increased rapidly as more listeners poured in and stayed this way for a majority of the night. Would anyone take the chance at getting the Earthquaker collaboration Life Pedal?

There was a drape casted over the production backline about three quarters back into the venue, quartering the bar and merch sections that could obstruct the lighting production on the other side. This was a great call, as it kept the stage during Sunn’s set at a 100% fog-to-the-max presence. Something eerie, yet so right.

BIG|BRAVE

The initial stroke of the percussion provided an overbearing and booming thump for listeners to guide themselves with. Shortly, melodies and chords begin to introduce themselves.

A Gaze Among Them by B I G | B R A V E

Two minutes in, the crowd has begun to synchronize head bobbing and full attention is at the stage beyond the drapes. Big Brave's presence on stage was immaculate, with the drummer’s kit being the centerpiece and source of radiant light for vocalist/guitarist right and lead guitarist left.

The vocals came out as an element of desperation, with backing of climactic drones from the strings, and the ever-present primal build of the drums. Violent lashing out of chords, increasing build up, and absolute invention of release characterised the performance.

Introduced mid-set, the lead guitarist produced a string bow to create a hymn of ultimate expression to pair with the lingering and cast out vocals. The physical acquisition of feedback elements from the group’s stage gear was a large and reinforced part of the set, perfectly executed to provide elements of unexpected turns throughout each song.

PAPA M.

Lonesome man. Silhouette drawn and clear. Mysticism in darkness. Yet comforting and responsive to only his own answers.

Papa M.'s performance can be best described as a graceful walk through the essence of spiritual being. The arpeggios and progression of his set began with a sense of an individual on some path, destination unknown.

However, confident and unwavered by any objections represented by the synth effects halfway through, it was like being walked through a shaman’s vision with a rumbling purpose and a humble triumph at curtains.

After a quick break in the smoke pit to gather my thoughts, and group up with friends, I headed back in for the mainstay.

Reentry into the venue. Wall of fog. Tension, uncertainty, confusion, anxiety, disparity, withdrawal. Could this representation of what I was looking for be a true answer to what I couldn’t appreciate before?

The stage was represented with almost zero visibility and complete amnesty. The first chord is cast. Instantly the crowd is in unison. A physical sound that could not escape, but be completely consumed by the listener. Being in the back it was amazing to the effect it had on the listener. Observing that each individual was in grasp of this physical wave of sound -- a few of them lost in it, just like myself during my listening sessions.

Getting my way up to the barricade was something I would compare to walking through a horde. Feeling the shake of the foundation kept me on my wits as I was weaving through the crowd. 30 minutes in, and I can see that Sunn has enveloped the entirety of the crowd with the most mesmerizing drone of sound that I can’t even begin to explain. Every individual just there listening, stricken, guided by frequencies.

After completing all of my busywork, I get directed by the venue cadre to deposit my belongings accordingly, then hustle back in to enjoy the set. At this point, I’ve found my sister and brother and just watch. Moments go by, colors change, omnipresence solidifies. I begin to find myself close to those listening sessions. Standing, and mentally outside of myself, I was hypnotized -- able to understand what I couldn’t before. Our bodies were only a tool to soak this physical form of saturation.

Sunn O))) live was the most insane and ultimate thing I had ever experienced in music. It was the most beautifully orchestrated masturbation of the best pieces of musical equipment I had ever witnessed. It was the first time I felt my entire body have a physical reaction to music.

Without doubt, this was the best form of therapy I’ve been a part of.

The TDSB’s rollout of online learning was an unmitigated disaster

It’s easy to forget now, but back in early March, before “Covid-19,” “14-day post-travel self-quarantine” and “expanded family bubble” entered the lexicon, the hot topic of discussion among Toronto parents was the ongoing brawl between the teachers’ unions and the education ministry and the likelihood of a complete work stoppage. Teachers, furious over Premier Doug Ford’s attempts to rein in the budget and cut the number of educators by the thousands, had staged province-wide protests, filling the Queen’s Park lawn to the edges with kids, parents and educators toting angry signs and chanting even angrier epithets. On social media, there was an all-out assault on Education Minister Stephen Lecce. Smooth-talking, sharply dressed, private-school educated and with no kids and scant work experience outside of politics, the 33-year-old Lecce became the avatar for everything the unions saw as wrong with the Ford government. For months, protesters had called for Lecce’s resignation (and sometimes his head: at one point, a mob crowded his car menacingly after he’d delivered a speech on anti-bullying).

As Torontonians headed out for March Break, the widespread expectation was that upon return, the strikes would become longer and more frequent. Teachers braced. Kids rejoiced. Parents, who were for the most part sympathetic to teachers, sighed. Then, the unthinkable: school was cancelled for two weeks following March Break due to the pandemic.

To many union members, the smooth-talking Lecce was the avatar of everything that was wrong with the Ford government

If ever there were a time to put aside differences and work together, this was it, but the relationship between the unions and the ministry was so toxic, so consumed with politics and posturing, that there was little chance for constructive collaboration, even with the well-being of kids at stake.

While the pandemic was a logistical nightmare for the ministry, it was a blessing in terms of optics and leverage. There are four teachers’ unions in Ontario—OSSTF (high school), ETFO (elementary), OECTA (Catholic) and AEFO (French)—and in an instant, all of them lost any public relations advantage they held. If teachers no longer had to go to work every day, how could they reasonably demand a pay increase and rally support for their preferred class sizes? To the surprise of no one, and to the delight and relief of Lecce, the unions abandoned their battle-ready postures and settled. The Catholic board announced a tentative agreement on March 12, and the other boards reached agreements in the following weeks.

The agreements were settlements in both senses of the word: teachers took what they could get. “We were prepared to fight on,” says OSSTF president Harvey Bischof, a former high school English teacher known for his blunt, direct manner. “The pandemic took away our ability to do so. Withdrawing service during the pandemic would have been pretty offensive to the public sentiment.”

Members of the Toronto chapter of ETFO were likewise embittered by having their hand forced by the pandemic. Their president at the time, Joy Lachica, is a union heavy, someone who revels in a good, drawn-out fight. Backing down went against her nature. “If Covid hadn’t hit, we would have pressed on,” she told me. She was sickened by what she saw as the ministry’s opportunism, which she likened to disaster capitalism. “Governments can use social situations like the pandemic to their advantage and resume their original intentions,” she said.

Few parents, of course, were interested in the finer points of educational grudges or who held the public-relations high ground. They simply needed to know when their kids were going back to school. The resounding answer from every possible source of authority was: “We don’t know.” For the moment, anyway, it seemed teaching was to be web-based. The ministry provided a paltry webpage with links to a grab bag of ministry and third-party resources: the ROM, the Aga Khan Museum, the National Ballet, Mathify (an online math program created by TVO) and the Toronto Zoo. There were also resources labelled for teachers that included printable handouts that aligned with the curriculum. The ministry’s other major contribution: a video entitled “Learn Like a Champion,” in which Lecce interviews Raptors guard Norm Powell about self-discipline and the need to remain hopeful in the face of adversity, then learns to shoot a basketball backwards.

Parents were bewildered: were they expected to manage their jobs and teach their kids, too? What they wanted was something resembling the classroom but online, a live video feed of teachers teaching students who could interact with each other, which in industry speak is called synchronous learning.

The entire system seemed to be in a state of suspended animation. One middle-school teacher who works in midtown and spoke on condition of anonymity wrote to parents immediately after March Break with a baffling update: “I have lessons at the ready, but I have been directed to hold off.” A supply teacher at a midtown school received the same directive. “We got a notice from both our administrative team and the union that basically said, ‘Don’t do anything,’ ” she said. She’s looking for a permanent job and asked me to withhold her name for fear of retribution from the board.

In late March, as it became clear a return to the classroom wasn’t imminent, the ministry issued guidelines for teachers—they should provide five hours of work a week for K to Grade 6, 10 hours a week for Grades 7 and 8, three hours per week per course for semestered high school students, and one and a half hours a week per course for non-semestered students. It seemed like progress, but no one said anything about synchronous learning. When it came to delivering the assignments and tasks, one union rep for an east-end school told her teachers over Zoom to take special care to avoid anything resembling excellence. “Don’t go above and beyond,” she said. “It could set the bar too high. If you come out with your A game, and later the ministry has its own ideas to add on, it would pile on more work for everyone.”

At the TDSB, officials were dealing with a separate headache: technology, or rather, a lack of it. As a public entity, the TDSB is required to ensure equity—that is, equal access to resources—for all students. As it became clear they would need to transition to remote learning, they had to make sure that all 250,000 students in the TDSB would have a functional and up-to-date computer with Internet access. That massive job fell to Manon Gardner, a 20-year veteran of the TDSB. She was promoted in 2018 to associate director of school operations and service excellence to lead the board’s multi-year strategic plan, which included integrating technology and ensuring digital proficiency. She knew that speed was critical, as kids left out of contact with their teachers would soon tune out altogether.

Among many obstacles, the first was that she had no idea how many kids were already set up with computers. So on March 29, Gardner emailed a short survey to all TDSB families to find out how many needed a computer and how many needed Internet access. For the 10,000 families who had no email listed with the TDSB, Gardner’s team either called or sent the survey by mail. In the end, about half of the board’s families responded—some 177,444—and of those, 60,000 needed a computer and 9,000 needed Wi-Fi. Gardner reviewed the board’s inventory, then the ministry brokered deals with Apple and Google to buy or lease new devices, at a reduced cost, to bridge the gap. Rogers provided free wireless data until the end of June to families who needed it. A handful of school caretakers gathered the devices, and 100 staff volunteers, clad in PPE, collected and shipped them to a central distribution centre, where the computers were wiped and reprogrammed. Finally, they were packaged with an instruction sheet and delivered to households across the city. Staff worked eight-hour days, weekends included. It was a massive undertaking and an impressive outcome. But the entire process stretched into June, and by the time it was done, many kids and parents had given up on school altogether.

The issues with technology didn’t end there. Once the kids were finally set up with computers, it became apparent that a quarter of the board’s teachers didn’t know how to use the TDSB-supplied online teaching software or needed a refresher.

The ministry had for a long time positioned online learning as the way of the future. For many months, Lecce pushed for two online courses as part of a high school student’s graduation requirements. Under Ford’s model, however, that implied fewer teachers, and the union, especially the high school teachers’ union, saw online learning as an existential threat. Before the pandemic, the ministry had spent $18.6 million to license online teaching software called Brightspace to Ontario school boards. But teachers found it difficult to use. Many preferred Google Meet paired with Google Classroom, and it was ultimately up to them to choose. When the pandemic arrived, only a quarter of the board’s teachers participated in the software training courses, although many teachers told me the clinics were consistently full, which suggests the lack of tech know-how was far more widespread than we know. How many of the remaining 75 per cent were already up to date on Brightspace and Google Classroom? The board told me they didn’t have that information at the ready, but one teacher I spoke to estimated that up to 30 per cent of her colleagues were uncomfortable with technology in general.

Laura Friedmann is a filmmaker and producer and a single mother of two kids aged eight and 10. She had one computer in the house and she needed it for work. She applied for two devices and got a TDSB-issued iPad for her son and a laptop for her daughter. It wasn’t until the end of April that she received them and set up Google Classroom. Until then, there was no communication from her kids’ school unless she logged into Google Classroom on her own computer, which she squeezed in between work, preparing meals and getting the kids out for some exercise. The assignments were another headache, since she had to be involved from start to finish for both her kids. She had to find the posted assignment, print it out, explain it—teach it, effectively—then take a picture of the finished assignment and upload it. There was nothing like a class—nothing live, no phone calls. Just a few hours a week of assignments, which is what the ministry prescribed. After that, she’d guiltily plop her kids down in front of Netflix until she could take them out for some fresh air. She felt she wasn’t doing anything well—work, parenting, teaching. One Monday morning, after she’d spent several long days in a row catching up on work while the kids were at her ex-husband’s for the weekend, Friedmann woke up to a house full of laundry, dirty dishes and cleaning that needed to be done. She knew homeschooling would be next. When her kids woke up and turned on the TV, she was overwhelmed with a sense of guilt, frustration and also relief. She thought, Well, I guess they’ll just do that this morning. Then she went into the bathroom, closed the door, lay down on the floor and cried.

John Dewey is considered a founding father of modern education. He was a philosopher and education reformer around the turn of the 20th century, and his ideas about pedagogy are still taught at OISE today. One of his central tenets was that the relationship between the teacher and the student is at the heart of the learning experience, and that a teacher’s job is to engage students as opposed to simply treating them as receptacles of information.

It’s not a revolutionary idea. Today’s teachers know that children do best when kids and teachers interact directly, when there is a two-way flow of information. Were Dewey advising the TDSB during a lockdown, it’s safe to surmise he would have insisted on synchronous learning so kids could see their teachers, ask questions and interact with classmates.

That’s exactly what happened in the private school system, where there was widespread adoption of synchronous learning, and, despite a few reported hiccups, the transition was quick. Of course, that system was working from several advantages: with a higher average household income, private-school kids are often already equipped with home computers and Wi-Fi. The schools have fewer students and smaller classes. They have a more favourable ratio of support staff. That’s not to say online learning went perfectly in the private system. Teachers had to come to terms with having a live feed into their homes. Of course, several hours a day of synchronous classes was too much for some kids, and their parents pulled them out. But the teachers’ focus was on keeping students engaged in learning—real, live learning, face-to-face with their teachers and classmates, right from the start of lockdown. Even if students didn’t show up, their teachers were there. They took attendance, they followed up if a student missed class. School was never treated as optional. In the public system, by contrast, synchronous learning was considered an extreme proposition. One public-school teacher told me he couldn’t be online for synchronous lessons because that would require him to “be at the same place at the same time every day.” When I asked him how that differed from working in a classroom, he said he might have to help his own child with schoolwork or drive his wife to the grocery store.

Privacy was another widely espoused concern. Union leaders claimed their members were worried that having a running camera in their home exposed them to meme-making, ridicule and more. One scenario put forward by a teacher with a toddler at home: “What if my son walked into the frame while I was broadcasting and pulled his pants down?” Bischof, the president of OSSTF, told me about a synchronous high school class being Zoom-bombed with pornographic images and “absolutely vile, racist and misogynistic comments.” As if to drive the point home, one union rep cautioned her members that if they went ahead with synchronous learning and some parent complained to the Ontario College of Teachers, ETFO wouldn’t support them.

Jill Haythornthwaite is a supply teacher who works part time at several schools during normal times; during the pandemic, she was unemployed, and she got sick of hearing excuses from her full-time colleagues. “I can’t believe the union is screaming about privacy issues in the middle of a pandemic. Teachers are being paid to teach. They need to teach. We’ve got 30 per cent of the general population unemployed.”

A Grade 1 teacher in the east end followed her union’s advice, which was to not do synchronous lessons, because it was the only advice she had from the union regarding live lessons. “Everyone is afraid to take a step forward,” she told me, “because what if it’s the wrong step?” She tried emailing her students homework, recorded lessons and links to web resources. She also tried teaching students some French by conversing with them over the phone. Engagement was a disaster. “They’re six-year-olds,” she said. “They can’t read instructions on a website. They’re not great on the phone.” During that time, only five students submitted work regularly, and they were the kids who were already doing well in her class.

Karen Brackley has two kids, aged six and nine, at an elementary school in midtown. Both are in French immersion. Her daughter’s Grade 1 teacher loaded snippets of PowerPoint presentations, weekly, onto Google Classroom. French immersion is designed for families whose parents don’t necessarily know French. Brackley didn’t read or speak it, and her six-year-old wasn’t reading yet. Neither could understand the presentations. Brackley told the teacher as much and received a curt reply: “We do this type of thing in class, your daughter should be able to do it.” Over the course of two months, Brackley’s son’s teacher called three times for phone conversations.

“John Dewey is rolling in his grave,” says Richard Messina. He is principal of the Lab School, a private school within the University of Toronto that serves as a laboratory for learning about child development. “In our survival mode, many teachers have needed to go backwards. Giving children the opportunity to make discoveries for themselves is so different than just telling them what the right answer is,” says Messina. “I totally understand that unions and teachers are concerned about teacher vulnerability online. But if you’re not engaged in synchronous learning experiences, then you can only be transmitting.”

The TDSB teachers who wanted to start synchronous learning on their own did so at their peril. One French-immersion teacher at an east-end school switched to synchronous right away and made herself available to chat anytime within a 12-hour window via FaceTime. She faced resentment from her colleagues and received a “cool it” message from her school’s administration, who said the teachers needed to establish a norm to avoid having one teacher go all-out when another is doing the bare minimum.

Stephanie Hammond is a teacher at Fraser Mustard Early Learning Academy, an all-kindergarten school of 600 in Thorncliffe Park. The thought of not being able to connect with her students weighed heavily on her. She wanted to create an interactive website full of videos of her reading stories or discussing seasonal plants and animals; to do that, she knew she’d need to collaborate with colleagues and the school’s administration. But union rules stipulated that staff meetings are allowed only once a month and no more, and that all staff must attend. “We couldn’t wait,” says Hammond. So she and her colleagues created what they called “check-ins,” which freed them up to hold more frequent and smaller meetings. Immediately after March Break, and before receiving any direction from the ministry, they learned how to construct a website. The next week, they built it. By April 6, it was up and running. It contains links to Hammond and other teachers leading classes and activities, read-along stories in English and Farsi, and the main page displays information for income assistance and technical support. Hammond tried to make it as user-friendly as possible for five-year-olds: she put up a photo of herself so her students knew where to click without having to read her name, and she made a “Talk to Ms. Hammond” button that a child could click to easily get in touch via email. Students who could access a smartphone or a computer could begin learning right after the break. For those without access to either, Hammond called families on the phone. For families who couldn’t speak English, Hammond and her colleagues used a translation device that’s free to TDSB schools and helped the families navigate the board’s process of getting a computer.

Across the city, other teachers like Hammond developed innovative ways to engage with their students, and eventually, word of that type of behaviour reached the union bosses, two of whom were still hammering out the details of their collective agreements. On March 26, the high school teachers’ union, OSSTF, made a confounding announcement: “The individual measures some of our members have taken over the past few weeks to ensure students have the materials and resources they need is a testament to their commitment to our students. But we have asked in light of developing a province-wide plan…that they be mindful not to implement anything that could run contrary to direction from their school board or forthcoming from our work with the ministry.” When I asked Bischof why they didn’t put politics aside and greenlight synchronous learning as soon as possible, he denied that politics played any role and then blamed the ministry for the delays.

After a month and a half of leaving the teaching mostly to parents, finally, on May 1, the TDSB sought feedback via an online survey to parents. What was working and what wasn’t? What kind of support did parents need? The results were no surprise. Some 53 per cent of the 39,000 respondents expressed a desire for more direct contact or instruction from teachers, either by phone or online.

School trustees then unanimously passed a motion for more synchronous learning. But it would be another three weeks—May 27, a full two months after schools closed—before the TDSB made it official. “Refined Expectations for Remote Learning: A Guide for Teachers and Designated Early Childhood Educators” was a nine-page document that recommended educators meet synchronously with their students online or on the phone for a minimum of two 15-minute periods per week.

Karen Brackley was relieved, happy that her son would be able to engage with his teacher. And that did happen—two 15-minute sessions per week, almost to the second. “The bare minimum,” Brackley said. She and her husband ended up hiring private tutors. The experience made her want to pull her kids out of the TDSB altogether, and it worsened her impression of the education system in general. She says she wasn’t alone. “I spoke to a few parents who came from other countries—Bulgaria, Turkey, Italy, France, Russia, Japan. They said our public schooling is very weak.”

The TDSB is weak, stretched thin after decades of underfunding. Over half its schools are more than 60 years old, with a $4-billion maintenance backlog—roofing issues, heating and cooling problems, foundation problems. Schools are also dealing with an insufficient supply of computers, bathrooms with ancient, unusable soap dispensers, and primary classrooms without sinks. Classrooms are crowded. And the board is constantly pleading for more money. Those problems have existed since at least 1997, when former premier Mike Harris, in an attempt to slay a massive provincial debt, legislated changes that placed education-related revenue under control of the province rather than the individual boards, who can no longer directly levy taxpayers—via property tax—to raise the money they need. As a result, the TDSB is beholden to the ministry for its funding, which it receives in grants, and the ministry leverages that power to extract what it wants from the board. Harris knew there could be an accountability problem with his model, so he pledged a public review of the formula every five years. The last one was 18 years ago. The formula is decades out of date and shortchanges the TDSB by $228 annually per high school student and $174 per elementary student. No government has fixed it. The revenue stream is too good to give up.

One teacher told me he couldn’t teach online because it required him to be at the same place at the same time every day

It took nearly two months for teachers to start synchronous learning en masse. But by that time, many students had given up on school entirely. How many is hard to tell. There was no directive from the ministry or the board or various administrations to keep track of, well, anything: how much time teachers spent teaching, or which kids were participating and for how long.

John Malloy, the TDSB’s outgoing director of education, told me it would be “very inappropriate” to keep track of how much time teachers were spending with students on synchronous learning because it would demonstrate a lack of confidence in them. “I trust our teachers,” Malloy told me. “I believe they care about kids and want to do a good job.” The board expected teachers to connect with students twice a week and respond to parents’ inquiries in a timely way, but Malloy felt it wasn’t the board’s job to enforce those expectations. “Monitoring is more effective when parent, teacher and principal connect and they work through it. Not because we set up a dynamic where we can say, ‘Teacher, you haven’t been online enough this week.’ That’s not what we would do in a classroom.”

The unions did try to figure out engagement rates: at the end of March, during a call between the OSSTF and the ministry, the OSSTF requested data about the number of students who engaged in remote learning versus students who didn’t. Effectively, they wanted the dropout rate. Nancy Naylor, the deputy minister, agreed to “take it back” to Lecce. The ministry claims it did ask school boards to gather information, but as of August, no one seemed to have that information on hand. Harvey Bischof, president of OSSTF, suspects they didn’t gather it. “If true, that’s absolutely negligent,” he says.”

And as kids were opting out, many school boards decreed that any work turned in during the lockdown couldn’t lower a student’s grades, which sapped teachers of much of their authority. One Grade 8 teacher told me that pandemic or not, his students understood their marks “didn’t really count until they were older,” which left room for those who were happy with their marks to essentially tune out. At another midtown school, an eighth-grader said “hardly any” of her classmates were turning in work. By June, in a Grade 1 French-immersion class near the Danforth, only five out of 19 students submitted work. By the end of the semester, five out of 25 Grade 11 kids in one class at an east-end school were handing in half-hearted assignments, and even fewer were attending the 15-minute Google Meet sessions, when the teachers bothered to hold them.

With no accountability to the board for what was the closest thing to attendance during remote learning, with overwhelmed parents unable to effectively monitor their kids’ schoolwork, and students guaranteed to get no worse than their pre–­March Break grades, there was no incentive to do school work. Students could disappear from lessons altogether. Also, teachers lost out on crucial information—which schools had more engagement, and what they did to get it—that could help them develop best practices for the fall. Halfway through July, teachers I spoke to reported no follow-up from the ministry or the TDSB and no opportunity to provide feedback to inform their plans for September.

The response to pandemic schooling was, in a word, disastrous—for kids, for parents, for the thousands of businesses that suffered when parents had to devote their working hours to teaching rather than working. Some families were forced to choose between staying employed and tending to their kids, and many chose the latter. And often, in households with a mom and a dad, the one to stop working was mom. As we head into the fall, many moms are postponing their return to work. According to a study published in July, 32 per cent of Canadian women who lost their jobs between February and June were not actively seeking work.

Kids, of course, were affected most of all, detached from daily interaction, from advancing their skills in reading, writing and math, from developing social skills, and so much more. The impact hurts some kids more than others. Laura Friedmann, the single mom who was reduced to tears when faced with the choice of either teaching her kids or doing her day job, was never contacted by her kids’ teachers to arrange synchronous learning. She marvelled at what some double-income households were doing to fill the education gap. “I was left flying by the seat of my pants and watching what other amazing families were doing on Instagram,” she recalls. When faced with a choice between making the rent or homeschooling, the latter eventually lost out.

“A lot of families just gave up on online learning,” says Ingrid Palmer, who works at a child development centre. Palmer also co-chairs the Inner City Community Advisory Committee, which advises the TDSB on high-need schools that receive extra funding so they can provide free meals to students, additional staff and training, and on-site medical services. Through work, she meets many families with children who are struggling with some stark realities—including kids with special needs who have lost their school-issued supports. Palmer, a single mother of three, experienced that struggle firsthand. Her 13-year-old son is on the autism spectrum, and during normal times, the TDSB assigns him a Chromebook to facilitate his in-class learning. Early in the lockdown, his teacher called to say the family would receive that computer, but it never arrived. It’s likely it was scooped up when the board collected school computers for redistribution. Palmer’s son normally gets good grades. She gave him the family PC when she wasn’t working remotely, but without his own computer or the routine of school, he lost motivation. He soon disengaged from school completely.

In her professional role, during the height of the lockdown, Palmer advised families who couldn’t juggle it all to opt out of school altogether. It was only a few months of school, and their mental health was more important than the three Rs. But in the event that there’s a second wave in the fall, she doesn’t see opting out as a viable strategy. “We need to have a better plan or these kids will be left behind. We can’t drop the ball again,” she says.

Educating kids during a pandemic—in class or online—is a challenge unlike any other. To make TDSB classrooms safe will require creativity and nimbleness. Sudden outbreaks of Covid-19 or a second wave might force kids back home. If that happens, teachers need to be empowered to teach remotely, supported with the resources to be effective, and the whole thing should be monitored carefully by the board and the ministry. That kind of success is built on trust, goodwill, innovation, flexibility and great communication—none of which were on display during the spring. It will also require increased autonomy for the boards, which remain financially beholden to the ministry. Unfortunately, the squabbling has continued over the return-to-school plan, suggesting that the chaos the TDSB experienced in spring will persist into the fall. For students, that could mean substandard education, or even no education at all.

COL22EVENT: REBRANDED  ➳ PHASE II: THE BONFIRE

The wind coming in off the water, eddying over the rocks, is undeniably sharp. Brown leaves crunch under feet that wander curiously from the stone steps of the front of the colony, to follow the light from a fire, far below. 

From the cliff’s edge, looking down onto the docks below the colony, one can see the merchant headquarters and their ships now cast in shadow. Metal tiki torches mounted on wooden pillars the only source of light. And just to the right, beyond a winding path of dirt and ancient stone staircases, lies a brief break in the rocky quarry, a narrow beach, usually mostly bare and scattered with dried seaweed. 

Tonight, however, it’s clear, and the sand shines like tiny crystals, stars upon the earth, under the warm and billowing flames of the bonfire. 

It’s a true feat, and voices of people already gathering, float up from below. Citizens flock from all directions, slowly making their way down, clad in masks and make-up, whatever they could find. 

Security has already begun patrolling up top, gazing down at the scene below with skeptical expressions and straight spines. 

Far below, there’s a hiss, and a crackle, decidedly more electronic than the fire, and then—music plays. It fills the cool air like smoke and bounces off the slowly rolling waves. 

The night has begun. 

To our Dearest Freaks and Frankensteins! 

This post marks the official start of our fourth, non-games related event, “Rebranded” ! 

We are so excited to be able to bring this to you today, and for the next few weeks to come! This phase of the event will be a single night in verse, but will last approximately two weeks in real life, to allow for as much plotting and exploring as possible!

Below we will outline some standard Colony Event guidelines, as is similar with most events we have here, as well as some need-to-knows about this event in verse specifically!

As of now, you may NOT post any new threads that are not affiliated to the event or in alignment with this timeline.

You MAY continue old threads you have going, though we ask that you tag them #preevent or indicate they are pre-event in the timeline. This is just to help keep things clear on the dash as to what’s going on at the party and what’s not. 

All new event threads being posted must be TITLED as such, indicating that they are Event threads. So you could so something like: 

FUN FESTIVE TITLE // corbin + whoever // REBRANDED OR LIKE:

PARA TITLE | ALEX AND WHOEVER {EVENT} ...and so on and so forth. Formatting does not matter! Do it however you like. Just indicate somewhere in the title bar that it is event related. 

You MAY post photos of your character’s costumes, etc, if you wish. You are by no means obligated to do so. 

You MAY NOT as of yet presume anything to do with the actual tattooing, as this will be introduced individually in phase 3 and is not yet underway. More info in the next section!

 ➳ THE COL22REBRANDED EVENT DETAILS ➳

The bonfire starts officially at dusk, around 7:30pm (1930). In lieu of Tuck In, all civilians are required to report to their Heads of House after dinner for a roll call, before they are permitted to head down to the bonfire.

The NWRF and Colony officials have assigned 3 patrolling guards to oversee the event from the vantage point of above the beach. One of these guards is an NWRF specific hire, Mekhai Knight.  This is due to being able to survey the event with a bird’s eye view, while simultaneously being able to keep an eye on the Colony grounds behind them, and the coming and going of civilians, as there is only one way up from the beach that doesn’t include getting very, very wet. Officially, the Colony is concerned about two major things: first, citizens escaping or wandering off, and second, leaving the Colony vulnerable to another attack, like the events from The Missing. Therefore, many guards still populate regular areas, like entrances and exits around the Colony, the training grounds and treeline into the woods, patrolling the corridors inside the colony, and at least one down at the docks. 

Colony Elites (Non-NWRF) have been instructed to keep an eye on behaviour and activity at and around the bonfire. They are to confiscate any liquor or illegal substances they see, and report delinquent civilians to the correctional officers, if need be. This means, ladies and gents, that if your characters are going to be drinking, which no doubt they will be, they have to be subtle about it! 

There are a few carts of snacks and beverages: the Meal Prep folk did as best a job they could at doing things that were festive and paying homage to the Halloween theme. No miracles, by any means, but they tried, guys! 

Though the tattooing portion of the event has not yet begun, keep your ears to the ground! corbin, pax and mouse will slowly begin spreading the word about the movement. They WILL NOT be saying specifically who is doing the tattooing, just that it’s a thing that is happening. So get gossiping and murmuring my friends!

Corbin has arranged for music to be playing with the help of Pax’s technical support. He’s more or less acting as D-Day DJ (sorry, bad joke, friends) but is taking requests ;) 

Remember that the small beach is off to the right (East) of the docks, maybe 100 meters out. It is at the base of a tall cliff face. North is the ocean, the cliff wall is at their backs to the South, the docks are to the West and to the East the beach ends, replaced by more of the rocky quarry. (Later, there will be ~things~ happening to the East around the corner, but you never mind that for now! ;) )

Citizens are NOT permitted to go swimming. Wading in the shallow end is fine. Anything more than that and an Elite will bite your head off.

Okay, so, that’s about all I can think of for now.

The benefits of a good night’s sleep can’t be overstated – nor the negative consequences of not getting one. The average human being needs seven to nine hours per night of sleep, and while there is no medical benefit to sleeping more than that average, there are all kinds of risks associated with getting less.

The first one is weight gain (and all its associated health risks like diabetes, heart disease and cancer), because lack of sleep stimulates the production of hormones that increase appetite and limits the production of the hormones that make a person feel full. Which leads to the second (unsurprising) consequence: Given that lack of sleep makes one insatiably hungry, being tired also makes people cranky and depressed.

Yes, science has discovered that waking up on the wrong side of the bed is actually a medical diagnosis almost always brought on by the same root cause: lack of sleep.

The third problem is still under investigation, but is quite concerning. According to NIH studies, those who report poor sleep in middle age often experience symptoms of dementia or Alzheimer’s later in life. Sleep, it seems, plays a critical role in clearing the toxins associated with declines in brain function.

So in short, sleep could make you thin, make you pleasant to be around and, in the long run, possibly protect your brain from degrading. Sounds like it should sell itself – particularly considering that sleep is one of life’s few pleasures that is absolutely free and can be done without a partner or any special training.

But somehow, we are a nation of chronically under-rested people. According to the most recent available research on sleep, about one-third of Americans report routinely getting less than the recommended seven to nine hours a night, while another third report they “sometimes” don’t get enough sleep.

But luckily, where there is a problem, there is typically an innovative entrepreneur selling a solution – and in the case of sleep, there are a lot of solutions out there. According to McKinsey, if you take the approximate value of all the sleep swag on the market as of 2018 –think luxury pajamas, high-end bed linens, cuddling robots, DTC mattresses and odd gadgets – it generates somewhere between $30 billion and $45 billion annually in revenue worldwide. The mattress market alone is worth a whopping $15 billion. Throw in the amount spent on pharmaceutical sleep aids worldwide each year, and “big nap” as an industry will be worth at least $76.7 billion globally by 2020.

Consumers are clearly willing to invest in getting some much-needed rest – and if some of the firms we’ve covered in the last few years are any indication, they are willing to experiment with some out-of-the-box ideas. There’s the Ostrich Pillow, which allows the sleeper to tuck his head into a soft, pillowy box to make it easier to sleep on a desk or other surface. Or there’s the Bearaby, which could be mistaken for a blanket knitted by a grandmother but for the fact that it weighs 20 pounds and costs $250-$280.

If that is more than you want to spend on a pressurized blanket experience, there is the Hatch Sleep Pod, which costs only $100. It works on the same principle as a weighted blanket – applying uniform pressure across the body to reduce stress – but instead of using weights to create the effect, the pod wraps the sleeper tightly in what can only be described as a swaddle.

“It’s designed to feel like a hug,” Founder Matt Mundt explained to PYMNTS.

There is also the slightly different variation of the Sleep Pod – a much more literal one, offered by HOHM. The startup offers napping spaces on-demand in the form of a 43.5-square-foot portable pod that comes equipped with a twin bed and charging station. The pods set up shop in places where the nap-needing tend to gather – university campuses and office spaces being their two main sweet spots – and offer the chance to book a 20-minute to two-hour nap online or on mobile with a few clicks or taps. Once a pod is paid for, the customer checks in with the pod’s attendant, who unlocks it and lets the customer in for their nap.

“I think there’s definitely a demand and interest for a product like this,” the firm’s Founder and CEO Nikolas Woods told PYMNTS. “Wherever people need sleep, we want to be there.”

In the future, he noted, they will be looking to expand their services to airports and music festivals.

As it turns out, apps aren’t only useful for ordering up weighted blankets or time in a sleep pod. The team at Sleepio believes their anti-insomnia app – which comes with a built-in cartoon therapist – is just the tool Americans need to get to bed on time and sleep the right number of hours.

This week, the app got a major upvote of confidence. According to reports from The New York Times, CVS Health is encouraging employers to cover the costs for their workers to use the app. CVS recently included Sleepio, along with about a dozen or so other healthcare apps, as benefits whose downloads employers can cover as part of their insurance policies as easily as they can cover prescription drugs.

In general, CVS is part of a nascent push to bring digital therapeutics and telemedicine more into the mainstream.

“We are at this pivotal moment,” Lee Ritterband, a psychiatry professor at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, noted on the emergence of various digital therapy apps. “For years, these have been bubbling under the surface.”

So far, only a few employers have started offering Sleepio, though CVS expects more to sign on this fall. It was chosen, according to Dr. Troyen A. Brennan, CVS Health’s chief medical officer, because it came backed by rigorous published studies.

“It’s important for us as a pharmacy benefit management company, as a big retail pharmacy, to endorse digital therapeutics when they work as good as or better than medications one can take by mouth,” Dr. Brennan said. “We can give the stamp of approval from having looked at the scientific information.”

The app functions by turning sleep into something of a gamified experience – the person seeking sleep works with a cartoon therapist/chatbot with a Scottish accent and an affable but firm demeanor. The user and the advanced bot work through a series of six weekly online sessions aimed at healing “broken sleep,” according to Sleepio.

“It feels a lot more like play than work,” Lisa Kelly-Croswell, the chief human resources officer at Boston Medical Center, noted of the program. Boston Med has offered Sleepio since 2016.

But does it really work? The science is a bit more mixed than Dr. Brennan let on. In several randomized studies that assigned some volunteers to use Sleepio and others to use a different treatment, the Sleepio users generally performed better in terms of how long it took them to fall asleep and how long they stayed asleep throughout the night. But in terms of net time spent asleep, the two groups didn’t have very different outcomes.

Plus, the program seems to have some issues with keeping customers engaged. Boston Medical, for example, has had about 3,000 people start the program since it became available in 2016, but have only had about 350 finish it. And that 89 percent attrition rate doesn’t seem to be a problem that is wholly unique to medical workers in Boston drinking too much Dunkin’ coffee. One large randomized trial showed that only 18 percent of Sleepio users completed the insomnia treatment. Another showed that more than half of people who downloaded the app failed to engage with it at all.

In some sense, Sleepio has the same problem as every other solution: It can only work if one uses it. The weighted blanket won’t help if you kick it off, and the luxury pajamas won’t work if they never come out of their box.

But lying under a weighted blanket is not a lot of work (unless one tries to move), nor is slipping on a set of luxury pajamas or checking into a campus sleep pod. Sleepio’s user retention issues might indicate that its course of study can succeed, but that it might be a little too much work for someone who is already tired.

Plus, given the sheer volume of experts who point out that smartphones are one of the main factors contributing to Americans not getting enough sleep, one has to wonder if a phone app is really the right approach when it comes to an insomnia cure.

And honestly, we can’t help but wonder how many of the workers who downloaded Sleepio tried to use the app, opened up their phone to start their session with the cartoon sleep therapist and then got distracted by shopping on Amazon, checking in with social media, binge-watching something on Netflix or talking to a co-worker on Slack. For some consumers, a sleep app is clearly an effective solution – but for others, we imagine, it is sort of like hosting a Weight Watchers meeting in a bakery, in that it’s just not the right venue to encourage willpower or discipline.

For those customers, it might be better to offer lower-tech solutions.

Like a doll bed for their phone – which, of course, they keep in a room other than the one their actual bed is in.

Daisy gulped and glanced down at her notecards. Normally, she would have just skimmed the research, thrown together a 2-slide powerpoint, and made something up on the fly for the oral presentation. For this assignment, though, she had a powerful motivator to excel: spite. 

Daisy threw a quick glare to the front row where her least favorite classmate, Jemma Simmons, was leaning on her propped up elbow on her desk, looking bored as usual. Jemma was the primary reason Daisy chose this topic to present. Jemma always was such a know-it-all when it came to British history, even to the professor. And the professor let her correct him all the time!

So for this presentation, Daisy put in weeks of research. She read seven books  cover to cover on the downfall of Charles I, and even went back and read the sources they sourced! This powerpoint was a work of art and she even had meticulously organized notecards to make sure she wouldn’t miss anything.

  If she got anything less than 100% on this presentation she was going to give Professor Coulson an earful. 

But her primary focus was Jemma Simmons. If she wasn’t such a pain in the ass in class every day, she would be exactly Daisy’s type. Cute, smart, kind of awkward, a mischievous twinkle in her eye every time she was about to say something snarky. 

Unfortunately, usually that snarky comment was directed at Daisy so it was less cute. 

Daisy had gotten through the entire presentation without a peep from Jemma (though she was pretty sure the sorority girls in the back were Snapchatting each other through the whole thing). Now, she just had to wrap it up. 

Daisy clicked the slide to the painting she found of Charles I walking up to his execution and flipped to the next notecard. 

“Charles I was sentenced to death on January 30, 1648. As he climbed the scaffold, his last words were ‘I go from a corruptible to an incorruptible crown, where no disturbance can be, no disturbance in the world,'“ Daisy concluded. 

The 'last words’ bit was a little dramatic for Daisy’s taste, typically, but she thought it added a little spice to the otherwise dry subject. She noticed most of the students were actually paying attention now and looking interested. 

And then Jemma freaking Simmons had to mumble under her breath, “That’s not what happened.”

Here we go. “Sorry, did you have something to say?” Daisy asked with false sweetness. 

Jemma barely looked up from her notebook where she was now doodling in the margins. “I was just saying that’s not what happened. Are you sure you were using reputable sources?”

Daisy felt her eye twitch as she clicked to the last slide of her sources with maybe a little more force than was strictly necessary. “Yeah, I did. All were published books that used first hand accounts that people who were at the execution wrote right afterwards.”

“Did they all use the same source perhaps?”

Daisy’s eye twitched again. They had, in fact. “Yeah, he was a very reliable historian who—”

“He was a bloody liar, is what he was,” Jemma grumbled under her breath. 

Oh, hell no. Daisy read the first-hand account, which she practically had to translate, since it was written in Ye Olde English where all the ’s’s were 'f’s and there were 'e’s where they shouldn’t be. That was the last straw for Daisy. 

“How would you know?!” she shouted, throwing down her notecards. 

“BECAUSE I WAS THERE,” Jemma screamed back. 

All fidgeting and bored shuffling stilled so the room fell deadly silent. As the vitriol faded from Jemma’s face, wide-eyed horror replaced it. Before Daisy could form a question, Jemma was gathering up her books. 

“Excuse me, I have somewhere I need to be,” she grumbled, piling all her books into her arms and darting for the door. 

Professor Coulson slowly stood and strolled to the front of the classroom. “Um, class dismissed. See you all Thursday. Excellent presentation, Daisy.”

Daisy tossed a quick 'thanks’ in his direction, before throwing her bag over her shoulder and sprinting after Jemma. She wasn’t getting off that easy. 

She quickly caught sight of Jemma’s brown hair, weaving through the crowd of students just released from class. Daisy jogged to catch up to her. 

“Please leave me alone,” Jemma growled. 

“What did you mean 'you were there?’ You can’t possibly mean that you were actually alive in 1648,” Daisy prodded, ignoring Jemma’s request. 

“Of course not, that would be absurd,” Jemma replied flatly. 

“But seriously, what did you mean? Are you just that into history that it feels like you were there?” 

“Please go away.” Jemma turned down a less crowded hallway and picked up her pace even more, so Daisy was practically running alongside her. 

“No! If you’re going to continually ruin my presentations with your snarky comments, I deserve to know why you think you know more than the rest of the world,” Daisy demanded. 

Jemma ignored her. 

Daisy was starting to get winded from jogging through the building after Jemma. She reached out and grabbed Jemma’s arm to make her slow her pace. 

“Hey, I’m just trying to—” 

Jemma whirled on her with a hiss. Her eyes flashed red and her angry snarl was punctuated by two long, sharp fangs that Daisy definitely had not noticed before. 

Daisy stumbled backwards and dropped her bag. “What the— You’re—”

Before Daisy could form another non-sentence, a hand grabbed the front of her shirt and she was forcefully shoved into a dark, empty classroom. Daisy cringed in the dark, waiting for those fangs to pierce her skin or for sharp claws to rip her throat out or any of the typical horror movie tropes of….vampires. 

But it never happened. Daisy cracked open an eye and Jemma was standing there with her hands on her hips looking disappointed. 

“You just had to be nosy. You couldn’t just let things be and continue your short little life without knowing about the existence of the creatures in your bedtime stories—”

Daisy was getting lectured. The vampire was going to stand there and lecture her. Typical. 

“I mean, you just had six more weeks of class, but you couldn’t keep your damn mouth shut and let it be and now—”

“Hey! You’re the one who had to keep being a pain about my 'historical inaccuracy,'“ Daisy snapped back with air quotes. She probably shouldn’t be sassing a vampire either, but too late to stop now. “If anyone couldn’t keep their mouth shut, it was you and— wait, did you say creatures? With an ’s’?”

Jemma rolled her eyes. “Think back. Don’t some things about this university seem strange to you? Like how there are always more Koenig brothers than you think there are? Or how our swim team never comes close to be beaten, even though they never practice? Or how about Professor Coulson’s spontaneous three month trip to Tahiti in the middle of the semester?”

Daisy wracked her brain. She had never thought too had about it, but there were some weird things she had noticed. Like the massive wall around the main campus and how most of the student body claimed to have seen a pack of wolves roaming just outside campus limits. None of this seemed strange enough to give much thought to, though. “I thought Coulson won a trip from a travel company,” Daisy mused. 

Jemma sighed. “He was dead. He came back to life. He does that from time to time. Koenig can clone himself and the swim team is full of sea nymphs.”

“What?” Daisy staggered back until she hit the concrete wall. “So the whole school is full of monsters?”

Jemma winced. Maybe that wasn’t quite the right word to use. “Only about 50% of the student population is non-human. The other 50% has no clue. They get to carry on living their oblivious lives without this knowledge. And we’re going to keep it that way.”

Jemma stepped into Daisy’s space and Daisy tensed, expecting the worst. Jemma’s eyes had returned to their usual caramelly brown, but they were no less piercing. Daisy’s vision narrowed to the single point that was Jemma as her eyes bored into Daisy and she felt like she was sinking into the floor. She had to squeeze her eyes shut and shake her head to get rid of the feeling.  

“Forget everything you’ve learned in the past ten minutes. We have a very delicate balance at this school and it’s not wise to to upset it, so don’t even think of blabbing this information to the world. You will not only put yourself in harm’s way, you will get me in trouble. And know that I was around during the creation of every medieval torture device you’ve ever heard of and some too heinous to even record, so I’d advise you stay off the radar. Understood?”

Even though Jemma spoke at barely above a whisper, Daisy’s ears were ringing at the end of her speech (threat?) and Daisy suspected it had nothing to do with the volume of the room. 

“Um…yes?” Daisy croaked out. 

Jemma took a step back and smiled. “Good. Sleep well.”

Without another word, she breezed from the room, leaving Daisy alone. The second she rounded the corner, Daisy gasped in a breath like she had been underwater for hours, a weight that Daisy hadn’t noticed lifting from her chest. Well, the rest of the semester sure was going to be interesting.

President Donald Trump says he wants America to win the race to the fast new wireless future. He took it seriously enough to sign a presidential memorandum setting a deadline of July 2019 for a new national strategy on allocating the airwaves. That deadline came and went with no strategy in sight.

In September, a Commerce Department undersecretary promised that the strategy was still on the way, telling a gathering of government officials that it would be released in the fall. A Commerce official assured POLITICO that the department did indeed deliver a draft to the White House. As of this writing, no strategy has been released.

In the void, Trump administration officials have been lobbying their own ideas for how America can win the race to build superfast 5G service — seemingly with no coordination at all. Economic adviser Larry Kudlow talked up a new “virtualized” network to counter Chinese hardware dominance. Attorney General William Barr suggested that instead the U.S. should buy a controlling stake in one of Huawei’s European competitors. The idea was unprecedented — and apparently unsupported: A day later, Vice President Mike Pence seemed to walk it back.

Democrats in Congress haven’t missed the chance to pounce on the White House’s disarray on such a fundamental new technology. Sen. Brian Schatz of Hawaii, the top Democrat on the Commerce Committee’s telecommunications subcommittee, called the White House’s 5G planning “haphazard in the extreme.”

It’s not just the White House, though: If the strategy is ever finalized, Washington is poised for even more confusion, and the reason dates back long before Trump. As China pushes aggressively ahead, with its leading firm, Huawei, a clear national favorite with strong support from the central party, American wireless-communications policy is overseen by an astonishing tangle of agencies—including the Federal Communications Commission, Department of Commerce, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. All have overlapping interests and bureaucratic turf to protect. And most notably, the agency most closely charged with overseeing 5G—the National Telecommunications and Information Administration—hasn’t had a leader for months, with no director even nominated.

Washington already has a long to-do list where 5G is concerned. Telecom companies are craving more space on the nation’s airwaves to help build a new and faster network; its promised speeds, up to 100 times faster than what consumers currently get, are possible only with swaths of new bandwidth that government agencies need to free up. They also require FCC and Commerce Department consensus on the standards for how they’re allowed to use 5G airwaves, which has spurred fighting over possible interference with weather forecasting.

Much of that is regulated by the Commerce Department, which has had very high turnover. Nowhere is the problem more acute than the National Telecommunications and Information Administration, an agency created inside the Commerce Department in 1978 to take the lead on allocating wireless airwaves for government use. Along with the Federal Communications Commission, it determines which public and private entities have the right to use which parts of the wireless spectrum.

Last May, the agency’s chief abruptly resigned after a year and a half on the job, and his acting successor resigned after just a few months. The administration has never announced plans to nominate a permanent leader in the nine months since. With less than a year left before the November presidential election, it’s likely the agency will stay headless indefinitely, subject to leadership from officials on an acting basis. And even then, the latest acting chief left in December.

One rumored source of conflict has long been Earl Comstock, a high-ranking deputy to Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross who has tried to assert control over the agency. Rep. Greg Walden of Oregon, the top Republican on the powerful House Energy and Commerce Committee, told POLITICO last year he would discourage any candidate from taking the NTIA administrator role due to concerns about department officials intruding on the agency’s turf. “I’d want to know who is really running the show,” said Walden, who formerly employed the last NTIA leader as chief counsel on the panel. “It’s a question of, are you the NTIA? Or is somebody else running the show?”

The instability has spelled trouble for the Commerce Department’s relationship with the FCC, which unlike the NTIA is an independent agency. Although NTIA manages government-held airwaves and the FCC commercial spectrum, the two frequently have to collaborate to help develop U.S. policy on 5G standards.

Despite the turmoil, there have been some baby steps. Commerce Department and FCC officials seemed to settle some differences in August over 5G standards to safeguard weather forecasting ahead of a global telecom conference.

But doubts still run high on Capitol Hill among some Democrats and Republicans over the terms of the deal and whether administration officials are on the same page. In the past year, the FCC alone has gotten into airwave spats with the departments of Education, Energy, Commerce and Transportation, typically over what airwaves the FCC can free up for the commercial wireless titans it regulates. The Commerce Department’s NTIA is supposed to be the agency managing these disputes, but some agencies have bypassed it entirely to take grievances directly to the FCC.

Over the week of Christmas, Trump did make a move to impose some leadership in global 5G policy, assigning 5G coordination duties to Robert Blair, a White House staffer serving as top security adviser to acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney. That made waves for other reasons: Blair had recently defied an impeachment subpoena from the House of Representatives to testify about his role in halting military aid to Ukraine.

Sen. Mark Warner of Virginia, the top Democrat on the Intelligence Committee, told POLITICO that despite having heard “favorable comments that [Blair] is a competent guy,” he finds the choice surprising. The stakes are high, and U.S. dominance in 5G is necessary to counter the rising threat of China and its titanic firms such as Huawei. Trump has been lobbying allied countries to spurn using Huawei equipment in their 5G networks.

“Why would you put somebody that’s in the middle of not [just] one controversy into this position?” Warner asked. “If the West can’t offer an alternative, and every month that we don’t have a plan, these are decisions countries are going to make.”

When it comes to 5G, concern over the chaos has become one of the rare points of bipartisan agreement in Congress. In December, Republicans and Democrats on the House Science Committee asked the Government Accountability Office to step in and disentangle the “contradictory statements” from the FCC, NOAA, and NASA on 5G airwave safeguards. The lawmakers wrote about “apparent lack of coordination” among the various agencies on 5G.

Then in January, Walden, the Oregon Republican, joined with House Energy and Commerce Chairman Frank Pallone (D-N.J.) to ask the GAO to probe these same issues and others, including agencies sidestepping their traditional deference to Commerce Department processes on wireless spectrum fights.

At a time when the United States is under significant pressure to develop new 5G technology and roll it out on wireless spectrum, Walden and Pallone found “inefficient management and chaotic processes.”

“Last year,” they concluded, “it was clear that the federal spectrum management process broke down.”

Despite these anxieties, the Trump administration has maintained the U.S. is barreling ahead on 5G deployment and has stability, such as the same FCC chair for the duration of Trump’s first term, administration conveners like Larry Kudlow and a Senate-confirmed chief technology officer, who has repeatedly pointed to 5G supremacy as an administration technology goal.

Trump, in his budget proposal for the coming fiscal year released this February, even proposed boosting funding for NTIA by tens of millions of dollars, an increase of roughly 80 percent and largely aimed at 5G. And the president himself is projecting optimism despite the concerns of Democrats, the industry and even his own party.

“Spectrum, we’re opening it up,” Trump said in January at the World Economic Forum meeting in Davos, Switzerland. “We’re in very good shape. I think we’re far advanced, much further than people understand. We got off to a very late start before I got here. But once I got here, we’ve really caught up.”

Bloomberg News’s Dilemma: How to Cover a Boss Seeking the Presidency

John Micklethwait, the editor in chief of Bloomberg News, walked into his Washington bureau on a Friday morning in December with a daunting task: explaining to his political reporters how to cover a presidential campaign when the boss is a candidate.

Addressing roughly 100 journalists spilling out of a glass-walled conference room, Mr. Micklethwait said Michael R. Bloomberg’s entry into the Democratic race had not changed his commitment to skeptical coverage. “We always knew it would be tough,” he told the group. “But we are actually showing what we are: an independent news organization.”

Not every reporter was reassured. Rival candidates had attacked the journalists’ coverage as biased; some sources had stopped returning calls. One reporter said the bureau’s credibility was at stake, citing Mr. Micklethwait’s public memo that Bloomberg News would refrain from “investigating” Mr. Bloomberg and his Democratic competitors.

Mr. Micklethwait said he had been referring to a team of specialized investigative reporters and not the broader political staff, but he declined requests from the journalists in the room to issue a clarification. Many reporters left feeling unsure how to proceed, according to several people who described the previously unreported town hall meeting.

Two months later, the pressure and unease inside Bloomberg News have only increased. Journalists who hoped Mr. Bloomberg’s candidacy would prove short-lived have watched him vault to the upper tier of the Democratic race. Now there are discussions about what a President Bloomberg could mean for a news organization already grappling with a perceived conflict of interest.

There are few precedents for a media mogul in charge of a major news operation seeking the presidency, though William Randolph Hearst, a Democratic candidate in 1904, enjoyed cheerleading coverage from his network of newspapers.

But Mr. Bloomberg’s presence looms large for the 2,700 journalists at his financial data company. New employees receive a copy of his autobiography, “Bloomberg by Bloomberg,” and company guidelines prohibit coverage of his “wealth or personal life.” In 2018, Mr. Bloomberg told an interviewer: “I don’t want the reporters I’m paying to write a bad story about me.”

That policy proved awkward during Mr. Bloomberg’s three terms as mayor of New York City and in his subsequent life as a billionaire philanthropist and political donor. Now it is bordering on untenable, according to interviews with half a dozen Bloomberg journalists who requested anonymity, citing fear of retribution from bosses who emphasize discretion.

When Mr. Bloomberg declared his candidacy in November, Mr. Micklethwait, an Oxford graduate and former editor in chief of The Economist, pledged in the memo he sent to the staff that the news outlet “will write about virtually all aspects of this presidential contest in much the same way as we have done so far.” But he said Mr. Bloomberg would remain off-limits from investigations, “and we will extend the same policy to his rivals in the Democratic primaries.”

Bloomberg News’s campaign reporters operate separately from the news outlet’s Projects and Investigations team. But the memo was widely perceived as a signal that Bloomberg News would cease accountability coverage of the Democratic field, even as Bloomberg executives called that a misunderstanding.

Mr. Micklethwait told reporters at the December town hall that Bloomberg News management had not prevented any political story from being published. “If you look at what we’re doing and the pieces we’re writing, any doubt that we’re reporting this aggressively disappears,” he said.

Political reporters at Bloomberg News, however, say the memo left them vulnerable to undue criticism from readers and campaign aides. And they express frustration that it suggested a level of internal censorship that they say is not reflective of their experience.

In December, the outlet published an article noting that Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren had criticized Amazon while paying the company for services. It was a run-of-the-mill story by the standards of a presidential race, where minor hypocrisies are fair game for journalists. But the candidates and their allies seized on the story to accuse Bloomberg News of bias.

There was outcry from Team Trump, too.

Because Mr. Micklethwait said in the memo that his staff would keep investigating the White House “as the government of the day,” the Trump campaign called Bloomberg News biased and barred it from covering its events. On the day of the Iowa caucuses, a Bloomberg reporter, Jennifer Jacobs, was escorted out of a Trump news conference outside Des Moines. (Mr. Micklethwait said in a statement last year that the Trump campaign’s “accusation of bias couldn’t be further from the truth.”)

Reporters are also battling a perception that Bloomberg News is an adjunct of its boss’s political operation.

Two opinion journalists at the company, Timothy L. O’Brien and David Shipley, who both previously worked at The New York Times, took a leave of absence to join the Bloomberg campaign. One editor at Bloomberg News jumped to the campaign, as well, along with a handful of staff members on the TV and video production side.

Mr. Micklethwait has had no contact with Mr. Bloomberg or his campaign since he declared his bid, according to a spokeswoman for Bloomberg News.

The distinction has not stopped critics like Ms. Warren from accusing Mr. Bloomberg of betraying the First Amendment. “He should let reporters do their jobs and report on him, and everyone else, as they see fit,” Ms. Warren wrote on Twitter last month, adding: “This ban puts reporters in an impossible situation and undermines a free press.”

Mr. Micklethwait declined to be interviewed for this article. A spokeswoman for Bloomberg News said in a statement: “Over the past 30 years, editorial independence has been at the core of Bloomberg News. We are proud of the more than 760 articles Bloomberg News has published on the election and the candidates, not to mention a host of broadcast interviews, since Mike Bloomberg announced he was running for president.”

To reassure readers, the news outlet is updating an “Election Coverage Snapshot” on its website, citing a promise “that we would be as transparent as possible” about election coverage. Bloomberg News also carries coverage about Mr. Bloomberg written by competitors, like The Times and The Washington Post, on its subscription-only terminals.

One Bloomberg News journalist has been assigned full-time to cover Mr. Bloomberg’s bid: Mark Niquette, a veteran reporter based in Columbus, Ohio, who previously covered infrastructure.

He has not shied from reporting on negative developments. Last week, his byline appeared atop a 600-word article about an audio recording from 2015 of Mr. Bloomberg praising stop-and-frisk policing. On Sunday, Mr. Niquette co-authored a story on concerns about Mr. Bloomberg’s “comments about policing, women and race.”

Mr. Niquette, who travels to many of Mr. Bloomberg’s campaign events, has also published a critical look at Mr. Bloomberg’s economic, health care and infrastructure plans under the headline “Bloomberg Offers Few Details to Back Up Trillions in Spending.”

In Washington, at the December town hall, Mr. Micklethwait said he was accustomed to hearing complaints about conflicts of interest. He cited Wall Street executives displeased with Bloomberg News’s coverage of their companies — companies that spend significant sums for access to Bloomberg L.P.’s financial data.

As for the challenges of covering his boss, Mr. Micklethwait noted that Mr. Bloomberg’s political second act could last anywhere from a few months to nine years.

It was a point not lost on the reporters gathered before him. The prospect of Mr. Bloomberg in the White House has become another matter of significant concern among Bloomberg News journalists.

If Mr. Bloomberg, as he has mused in the past, were to sell his company if elected, some journalists there believe a new owner may not be willing to subsidize an expensive news-gathering operation that is ultimately tangential to the company’s core product, the financial data terminals that command princely subscription sums from the investing class.

And if a President Bloomberg held onto his media organization, how would Bloomberg News reporters cover Washington and a federal administration controlled by the man ultimately responsible for their paychecks?

The company declined to comment on those questions, and reporters there say it is too early to earnestly begin preparing for such an eventuality.

As for Mr. Bloomberg himself, he was asked by CBS News in December about his staff’s concerns about not being allowed to investigate his rivals in the presidential race.

User Explorer

User Explorer report reveals the insight of each visitors behavior towards your goal. The client ID is assigned to each device from which the user visits your website.

Demographics report

This is Demographics report, helps you to identify the age group of visitors you have for your website and the gender split. This insight can help you to improve product design and reveal the scope of new market opportunity.

Acquisition overview

Acquisition overview lets you understand the Traffic source, the reason for a sudden spike in conversion and more. Based on referral source metrics you can plan your spending on digital marketing channels.
