#one thought that tickled me is their voice comes through the firebox

One thing that always fascinates me is the idea of just how the engines sound like to anyone inside while they are speaking like do the crew hear the voice from outside the cab or does it sort of vibrate through the cab walls? If the former, then is it more difficult to hear the voice from an engine that is larger than one that is smaller? And if the latter, then do they sound the same on the inside than if you were stood next to them? (like how we hear our own voice differently than what others do)
