i was so excited (well kind of excited) for the hijack series but oh my god it's bad. and i havent even gotten to the good part yet! the first ep alone has so many plot holes (spoiler warning) from the behavior of the crew to the pilot opening the cockpit door just because they're pointing a gun at his fuckbuddy to the fact that he is able to CHANGE HIS MIND about the emergency on board talking to atc like "yeah never mind it's all good now" LIKE YOU HAVE TO LAUGH
#i get that fictional stories involving planes have to take certain liberties#because aviation is so highly controlled#but that is exactly the point#everybody knows that there are procedures and check lists for every little thing#it's completely ridiculous to expect your audience to believe that a pilot 22 years post 9/11 would simply open the cockpit door for the#hijackers (after knocking his first officer out with a fire extinguisher no less)#this guy SEES A MAN WITH A GUN outside his cockpit and rather than squawking 7500 or using that code when talking to atc#he's like um... possible security incident on board#i dont care if some screenwriter somewhere doesnt give two shits about aviation protocols#one single google search along the lines of#what pilot do when hijacker#and this could have gone somewhere#and ANOTHER THING#the real time narrative#😐#these people made a seven hour long miniseries about a seven hour flight from dubai to london because#well thats the question isnt it? i sure as hell dont know#because they could i guess 😶 anyway point is#narrative focus aint just a river in egypt#the discrepancy between story time and discourse time exists because some things will always be omitted or summarized BECAUSE NOT ALL OF IT#IS INTERESTING#if you want to tell your story in real time you better have a reason for it#who the fuck looked at a seven hour flight (argaubly one of the worst experiences a person can subject themselves to) and thought#oh my god i wish i could watch this on tv#granted there's a bit more going on with the plane getting hijacked and all#but the pacing is already becoming an issue#and again: I AM ONLY ON EPISODE ONE#anyway im determined to finish this show#im still hopeful that it could improve (as i said: i havent even gotten to the good part yet. this is a show about idris elba negotiating)#and even if it doesnt at least ill be able to shit on it properly lmao

If you're surrounded by people who call trans people by their deadnames, you're most likely in a hate group. But a possible alternate explanation is that you're in academia. And it's not because that many academics are openly transphobic -- they just don't know that the site they fully trust, Google Scholar, is telling them to do it. Google Scholar was developed in 2004 and has changed very little since then. It supplanted a lot of hard-to-use library search indices by providing a Google-style interface with a single search box. Now it's the most name-recognized site for searching for almost any paper by almost anyone. One aspect of the design was, authors are just a kind of search term. An author is a cluster of different ways to abbreviate a name, like Firstname Lastname, Firstname M. Lastname, and F Lastname, and you might see different forms in different places, but the underlying name will never change. This is because Google Scholar was built by, and for, cis men with unchanging Western-style names. The "almost anyone" who you can search for excludes trans people, among a lot of other people it represents poorly. And because Scholar will not change, it should perish.
I fought the goog, and the goog won I changed my name in research, retroactively. I broke the assumptions of Google Scholar, and Google Scholar hid my papers from search results when it couldn't model what was going on with them. It would particularly suppress search results for my new name, which were just confusing distractors for the results it really wanted to show, for my deadname. If you ask it how to cite me, it will auto-generate you a citation of my deadname. I fought hard to remove citations of my deadname, replace PDF files, take down papers I couldn't replace, take away all the evidence of my deadname that I possibly could. Not to keep it from the eyes of people, but to keep it out of the Google Scholar model. I partially succeeded in making my new name more searchable, and even got it to show up in the auto-generated citations in some circumstances. For a fleeting moment, I claimed victory. But Google Scholar countered by finding my absolute most obscure things that count as publications, ones that I can't kill because they were not really alive in the first place, and bringing them to the top of my search results, so it can use them to keep helpfully directing you to my deadname. Signing in and claiming papers on an "author page" doesn't help, because author pages are one tiny link in search results that nobody clicks through, because the papers are already right there. Most trans people quit research rather than deal with this, and even though I found myself with more energy and opportunity to fight for my name than most, I quit research too.
There! We fixed it for cis people Google knows about this. I raised the issue with them in February 2019. It became an internal bug report in July 2019, which I have never seen, but from what I've heard about it, it quickly went far astray from what I was trying to tell them. "Allies" inside Google came up with extremely dumbass theories of how to represent trans people in a way that fit Google's preconceptions. I've posted about the problem at various times on social media (mostly Twitter when that was a thing). I tweeted about how Google's name model doesn't even work for cis women, given that many women change their names at some point in their lives. This got some traction and led to an amazingly quick response, along the lines of "oh shit! We fixed it for cis women." The new feature they added allowed a person (who had claimed papers using a Google account) to link together their multiple names, as long as they were okay with all the names being shown at the top of their search results. The first trans person to try using the feature was extremely surprised and dismayed by the prominence it gave to their deadname, and asked "do you think they talked to even a single trans person about this feature?" Nobody has ever heard Anurag Acharya, the creator of Google Scholar, say anything about the problem of name changes on his platform, or really anything attributable to him at all. But I know he knows about it.
The one time we got their attention Google got banned as a sponsor of Queer in AI, partially because of Google Scholar, though if you ask most people now they'll say it's because they profit from AI weapons systems. Which is also a thing. But Google Scholar was enough of a part of the issue that an exec actually got on the phone with non-Googlers about it for the first time. The exec was Jeff Dean, head of AI, whose organization does not actually include Google Scholar. When pressed on the issue by Queer in AI, he defended Scholar's lack of name changes, saying -- I believe this to be a direct quote -- "we have to ensure accurate information". Calling trans people by their names does not fall under the category of "accurate information" to the latently transphobic Jeff Dean. In another rare instance of public communication, a couple of painfully assimilationist trans Google FTEs promoted a horrible idea where publishers would have an API for informing Google that someone's name had changed in their archives. That's right, you wouldn't control your own name, dozens of publishers would, all with their own processes ranging from gatekeepy to nonexistent, and you'd have to out yourself and beg to every one of them to press the Here's A Trans Person button. The only good thing about this proposal is that it was so obviously unworkable that they didn't do it. Aside: If you are a Google full time employee, and you are trans, you are assimilationist. I'm sorry. I know your life circumstances mean you have to be. There used to be non-assimilationists there, and they joined the union and got illegally fired in 2019, or they quit in solidarity with the people who were fired in 2019 or 2021, and that leaves you, keeping your head down and keeping your job. You're still reading this paragraph, and that's amazing, so here's what I need you to know: from your position, you cannot advocate for the needs of trans non-Googlers, unless you allow trans non-Googlers into the conversation. Contract workers, though, you're cool. You fought for a trans man, working at a Google data center, to stop having to wear his deadname on his badge, and you won.
There is a solution I know that Google would not invest a lot of development effort into fixing a pet project like Google Scholar (though, again, "we fixed it for cis women" came remarkably quickly). I know that Google is institutionally incapable of letting people control their own identity without being a gatekeeper, that it's just not in the realm of things they dream of. There is still a solution. It's so easy. It plays to Google's strengths. There's even a business argument for it. They just need to shut it down. Google Scholar can have a plot in the Google graveyard next to Hangouts, Picasa, AngularJS, Cardboard, Inbox, Orkut, Knol, and the dearly departed Reader. It will be missed, for a bit, and then real librarians and archivists can get back to doing the job that Google monopolized. They'll know how to do it better this time. The Internet Archive is already doing it, and they let trans people change their names. I made a site about all this, scholar.hasfailed.us. I haven't been raising the issue enough since the fall of Twitter, and I think it's time that I get back to it.

Follow up to my last post regarding Sam Heughan allegedly going camping last weekend with a mystery woman...
So, it came to my attention that another blogger connected the dots between Sam Heughan posting on Instagram from the Scottish countryside and a woman posting she was camping in what looks like the same exact spot. The other blogger went on to say something along the lines of not liking Sam's behavior due to who this woman is. And that she wouldn't post the woman's name as a result. This understandably created a lot of chatter and curiosity. People bombarded me with Anons and DMs about it. Certain people on my Team had a suspicion of WHO the woman is. The other blogger loves to claim that she's neutral and simply posts info. But the reality is she is very judgmental of Sam, and more importantly, she surrounds herself with CONFIRMED Sam haters, disgruntled ex-shippers, and Purv aka me haters. That's a FACT and theres no denying it. All anyone has to do is look at the bloggers who leave comments and likes on her posts--all KNOWN Sam haters, disgruntled ex-shippers, and long time haters of moi. The narrative this blogger perpetuates is that Sam is a man whore, and in this instance, a pervert for being with this woman. (She's young. Legal, but young.)
I, on the other hand, believe ALL dating is good, as long as it's between CONSENTING ADULTS. Sam is SINGLE. He can date whoever he wants and as many or as little women as he wants. And like I said in my previous post, Sam isn't deceiving anyone. Unless these women just landed on the planet, they all have social media and know how to use Google Search. They can SEE and READ about who he's dated or dating. I don't know about you, but every woman I know, the second they're interested in a guy, the first thing they do is conduct an extensive Internet search on him. Women are more efficient than the F B I when they want to find out info on a man. 🧐 Facts. And, on my blog, I don't use initials, for the most part, I write out full names, so any woman Googling Sam's dating history has LOTS to read about. 😉
I don't think Sam is doing anything wrong: he's dating multiple women, it's all consensual, and they are all of legal age. WHAT IS THE PROBLEM? Nothing, dammit, absolutely nothing.
So, if you want a blog that supports Sam and is glad he has an active love life, this is it. For the love of God, he's so fucking hot, who would turn down that golden delicious Scottishness? Not I, lasses, not I. Amirite? 🤗 If you want to be a prude with your panties in a bunch over consensual dating between a hot actor and the women who clearly can't resist his charms, the Sam hater blogs are waiting with open arms to brainwash you. Go there.
Okay, so onto what the other blogger posted. I was sent these screencaps. Sam posted this a few days ago. 👇
Closer shot of the mountains and sky. 👇
The mystery woman in question posted this. 👇
Here it is lightened up by me. 👇
Seems like the same place. The other blogger said she was sent screenshots of the mystery woman posting from the same place. And the caption in the top right stating she was camping. The other blogger cropped out most of the pic, except the top of the back of the woman's head. 👇
I lightened up the pic. It looks like she has blonde hair pulled back in a ponytail. 👇
Someone on my Team obtained some info that led her to the account of a young female Scottish athlete. It seems that the other blogger is outraged with Sam's "behavior" simply because the woman is 19 years old. Yes, that's young, but again, she is a legal adult. And Sam is famous, there's ton of info online about him. I'm sure the woman Googled him before she got in a tent or camper with him. JS. She and Sam mutually follow each other. 👇
It was also pointed out to me that the only set of pics of his that she liked on Instagram is the one he posted when they allegedly went camping together. 👇 What a coinky dink. 🤔😊
She's an accomplished athlete, college student, blonde, Scottish. What's not to like? Again, two single, CONSENTING ADULTS. If that's a problem for anyone, then that's literally YOUR problem. Sam seems verra happy with his life. And any woman who spends little or lots of time with him, I'm sure is happy as well. Again, what is the problem? None that I can see. But, hey, I love sex, and camping, and Scottish lads who look like this. 👇🤷♀️
PS. I'm not going to post her name FOR NOW because there is no concrete confirmation it was her. It's all circumstantial evidence at the moment. If I get something more concrete, then I'll post her name. In addition, I've gotten other DMs wondering if the outrage is because the woman isn't this athlete, but is one of the new cast of Blood Of My Blood. But, outrage over two actors on parallel shows dating would be weird since it happens all the time. Who knows...
That's what I have for now. If it's not the athlete in question, it doesn't really matter, the point is Sam is dating around, enjoying life. Sounds good to me. If you figure out who she is, please, don't be an asshole, and go harass her. Thanks.
As for the haters already frothing in my Anon Asks, keep 'em coming. I LOVE to laugh and laugh and laugh at your idiocy. Go ahead, make my day. 😘

How you met BTS: (Hyung line)
A/N: I am the first person to admit I love reading these kinds of fics. There is something so wholesome and wonderful about them. Somewhere along the way I made up my own little universe and I thought I should write it down for others to enjoy. With that being said this is the first time I really wrote anything like this. I know I haven't 100% nailed the personalities of the members but I hope it is still an enjoyable read.
Oh! One more thing. I am not a gymnast, not a neurosurgeon, and I don’t know much about art. I thought it would be fun to learn more about these topics for this series. I did just basic google searches for this one. I plan on doing more thorough research in the future. If you know anything about these topics, I got anything wrong, or know any good resources so I can learn more let me know!
Warnings: mentions of anxiety but nothing too graphic. Let me know if I need to add anything.
Kim Seokjin
You meet Jin through a mutual friend. You weren’t looking for a significant other at the time. Heck, you weren’t even planning on living in Korea. However, your best friend, Ha-Yun, happened to give birth to two baby girls. She is a single mom, the father disappeared as soon as he heard about the pregnancy, and desperately needed help. You of course volunteered to help your best friend. She was there for you through thick and thin and you always promised to do the same for her.
Thank goodness you were on sabbatical for your job. You dropped everything just to be with her. It was the second week of your stay when you officially met Kim Seokjin. Ha-Yun had just fallen asleep along with her baby Ae-Cha. However, Mi Cha just couldn’t sleep so you took it upon yourself to help her. You just gave Mi Cha her bottle and were in the process of burping her when Seokjin knocked on the door.
He would tell you later that he never saw someone more beautiful than you. When you opened that door your hair was up in the messiest of buns, your clothes wrinkled, a burping rag over your shoulder covered in whatever Mi Cha just burped up, dark circles under your eyes, but with the most loving eyes and gentle smile.
“Hi, can I help you?” You asked so softly as not to disturb the calm atmosphere.
“Hello. I’m Kim Seokjin. I am here to visit Chang Ha-Yun. She’s a dear friend of mine.” He replied with a kind smile.
“You just missed her. She’s sleeping.” You replied taking off the burping rag and bouncing Mi Cha gently in your arms.
“Well, that is poor timing on my end. I knew I should have called.” Jin muttered to himself.
“Hey, it’s okay. Come in. Yunnie had a feeling you would be coming over today. She gave me clear instructions to let you in and tell you to make yourself at home.” You chuckled leading him inside.
“Thank you. You must be the famous Y/N I have heard so much about.” Jin responded.
“I am and this little one is Mi Cha.” You smiled brightly at him as Mi Cha cooed.
“It is a pleasure to meet you both.” Jin returned the bright smile.
Seokjin stayed for the rest of the week not only helping Ha-Yun with household chores (mostly building furniture and fixing household appliances) but also helping with the cooking, cleaning, and the babies. He became your shadow helping you with everything. He was great company and by the end of the week, you both exchanged numbers much to Ha-Yun’s glee.
Min Yoongi
You were born with two best friends by your side. Tripletts much to your mother's joy and your father's dismay. They were your everything. They were the sun and moon to your earth. They were the land and sky to your ocean. You weren’t complete without each other. Yet it was always written in the stars that you three would part. Nevaeh the oldest of you three would travel to England to study art. You would become an author. And Alice the youngest of you three would become a make-up artist working with some of the biggest K-Pop stars in the industry. You three were as busy as bees in your chosen careers.
Well during an unassuming Wednesday in November you had your monthly video call with your sisters. Navaeh was living her best life in England! She went on and on about the culture, architecture, and art. Meanwhile, Alice disclosed she was going through a depression spell. She didn’t say much other than she just felt so alone.
It was later that night you bought a ticket to see Alice. The next morning was bright and the air was warm. You went up to your sister’s apartment door with your backpack your trusty laptop and your suitcase. You knocked on the door and waited patiently.
“Coming!” She called out rushing to the door.
Your sister opened the door still in her pajamas, her hair an unkept mess, and just by the look on her face, you could tell she just rolled out of bed.
“Morning Alice! I missed you.” You whispered giving her a light hug.
“Y/n! I can’t believe that you are here.” Alice, bless her, returned the hug and started softly crying.
“Oh sweetheart, I’m here. I’m here. Now let’s go inside and I will make you breakfast.” You cooed leading your sister to her kitchen, after bringing in your things and shutting the door of course, making her the favorite breakfast of her childhood chocolate chip pancakes and hot chocolate with whipped cream and sprinkles.
Alice gave you a watery smile and gobbled down everything you put in front of her. Now that you were face to face with her you saw the bags under her eyes. You saw the sparkle that was in her eyes was significantly dimmed. She seemed thinner and exhausted. With that being said she seemed at ease with you here. You sat next to her and ate with her.
Breakfast went by fast. Your sister went to freshen up, showered, and changed into an outfit she felt comfortable enough in to face the day.
“So I am off today. What do you wanna do Y/N?” Alice asked looking at you with big eyes.
“I’m here for you. You decide.” You replied giving her a soft smile.
That’s when her phone went off. She seemed confused but answered. You couldn’t gather much from the conversation other than apparently you were going with her somewhere.
“Y/N please don’t hate me. But I have to go to work. Will you come with me?” Her eyes pleaded with you.
“Of course! I would be honored!” You replied jumping off her couch and grabbing your backpack. “Come on Alice! It is time for an adventure.”
You both went on a bus to your destination. To be completely honest you were not paying attention to where you were going. You were more focused on making your sister smile. You both did arrive safely. Alice got you both through security and into the room where makeup artists do their magic.
Alice had left you in that room promising she would be back as soon as she could. Apparently, she needed a bathroom break. You decided the best way to use your time would to be look around the room. You had totally underestimated the amount of makeup these artists needed to do their job.
“Alice-ah isn’t today your day off?” A voice from behind you started you.
You turned around only to see Min Yoongi from BTS. Right. Alice works with K-Pop idols. Don’t panic.
“I’m sorry. I’m not Alice.” You reply bowing your head wishing your sister would turn up.
“Don’t be silly. If you aren’t Alice why do you look exactly like her?” Yoongi asked. His feline eyes searched yours. His lips twitched up into a smirk.
“Yoongi hyung! You won’t believe who we found in the hallway! Alice Noona is here on her day off to help with the music video!” Jungkook practically yelled storming into the room with your sister being dragged behind him.
You let out a relieved breath as you ran to your sister giving her a big hug.
“Wait. Who’s this Alice?” Yoongi asked looking between you two.
“Do you remember how I mentioned I have two sisters?” Alice asked. The members nodded their heads.
“Well let me introduce my middle sister. Y/N. The world-renowned author.” Alice replied with a bright smile.
Jung Hoseok
People are always surprised when you tell people that you meet Hoseok at a dance convention. Yet you are probably one of the worst dancers in Korea. You have always been told that you danced to the beat of your own drum. You had your own internal song that you and only you knew the rhythm. Your family was full of dancers. Yet, you decided to become a gymnast. That way you decided the rhythm instead of it being decided for you.
It turns out you were good at gymnastics. You loved it and you practiced hard. Your favorites were uneven parallel bars and the balance beam. Despite not enjoying being in the spotlight you had participated in many gymnastic events and competitions. You did very well and won many awards. Once you were old enough you jokingly sent an application to be a coach for the next upcoming Olympians. However, they hired you very quickly and you were over the moon.
This is how you found yourself at a dance convention of all things. You were there with the five young women who would be competing at the Olympics. One of the other coaches thought it would be a great idea to go to this dance convention to empower, inspire, and team build. The idea sounded lovely until you lost your team.
You found yourself leaning against the wall near the women's bathroom deeply sighing. No one in your team was answering their phones and despite your frantic searching, you could not find anyone you recognized. You felt the anxiety bubbling in your chest, tears building in your eyes, and your breathing becoming uneven.
“Excuse me, are you alright?” You looked up surprised to see BTS’s Hobi. You tried to not freak out standing in front of one of your idols.
“I lost my team. I cannot find them anywhere.” You replied sighing and looking down at your feet.
“Team?” Hoseok asked tilting his head.
“I am one of the coaches for our future Olympians.” You said sheepishly scratching the back of your head.
“That's really cool!” He replied.
You nodded your head.
“Come on! Let’s go find your team.” Hoseok said pulling you toward where the events were taking place.
After about half an hour of searching you found your team. You couldn’t help but tackle hug the five young girls in your care.
“Unnie there you are! We were looking for you!” The youngest said happily hugging you back.
“I see you found your team,” Hobi said appearing behind you.
“Thank you so much for helping me.” You turn around, after escaping the group hug and bowing to him.
“You are the most welcome. This convention lasts two more days. Why don’t we exchange numbers? Just in case?” He replied bowing back with a giant smile.
Kim Namjoon
Life as a neurosurgeon is difficult. Every person you ever operated on would never ever be the same again. Sometimes when that reality becomes too heavy for you, you escape to art exhibits.
One of your best friends and old schoolmates Kang In-Su is a museum curator. His museum is known for its exquisite exhibits. You two have made a deal since you visited the museum so often. You pay him a set fee every month and you would be allowed in whenever business hours were open to the public.
It was a quiet morning. It was raining and storming outside. It was a perfect day to look at some modern art. Apparently, you were not the only one to think so.
Your mind drifted as you stared at the painting in front of you. You admired the brush strokes. The colors. The emotion that called to you through the painting. Warm tears fell down your face.
“Are you alright?” A gentle voice asks from beside you.
“Yes, I am quite alright. I always cry looking at art. It’s amazing what the brain can do.” You reply not looking over at the stranger.
The stranger hummed in response. You two stood there looking at the art. You two seemed to follow each other around the museum. Not saying anything but enjoying each other's presence.
Eventually, you did look at the stranger. He was tall, nicely dressed, had a facemask that covered the lower part of his face, and a hat that obscured the rest. You found his presence calming.
“Thank you for looking at this exhibit with me. I have to get going. I have an appointment I need to get to.” You whispered to him.
“Of course. Have a great day.” He replied.
“You as well.” You said before heading to the hospital.
It turns out that the stranger is Kim Namjoon from BTS. You often would run into him on quiet days early in the morning. You two got into this habit of walking around the museum together. At first, it was in silence but it eventually led to quiet conversations.
He learned about your work. You learned about the music industry. He listens to you ramble on about really interesting brain studies and you listen to him ramble about songwriting. You two became immersed in each other's worlds. Then one fateful day Namjoon sought you out before he had to leave the country. Shyly he asked for your number. Of course, you said yes, and well as they say the rest is history.

Deux Moi is also a business to attract readership, followers and clients because when there’s rent, food and bills to be paid, no one one is reading and verifying DM’s and emails (hassling actors, agents and industry), for free.
Hello, Anon:
Of course it’s a business, a way to sell merch to gullible people who like to advertise that they’re gullible. Although …
A quick visit to their website indicates that the eponymous merch is still “coming soon” in Fall 2022 and it’s now Spring 2023, so perhaps people have figured out that a DeuxMoi sweatshirt is not the flex they thought it was.
DeuxMoi has always only ever been just another way to make money on the internet. It’s click-bait writ large which preys on celebrity culture, the idolatry of fame and money, coupled with the basic human need to know how the other half lives.
The issue I have with DeuxMoi is that they publish rumors and lies as if they were facts and despite the disclaimers attesting to the fact that nothing is a guaranteed fact in their fact-free, boundary-free social media celebrity gossip hellscape, no one but nerds like me ever read the fine print. And they rely precisely on that fact to promulgate lies as if they were the truth, with impunity.
Despite the fact that this obvious CYA disclaimer is readily available in a simple Google search of the company, people will still believe whatever nonsense DeuxMoi publishes like it’s the gospel truth, and DeuxMoi thrives on the fact that it’s extremely difficult to dispel a rumor once its been spread around on social media.
Fake news hurts real people and destroys real people’s lives.
The fact that there’s a DeuxMoi novel and a podcast now, along with celebrity-affiliated merch instead of just branded sweatshirts and beanies indicates that making money via the extremely lucrative gossip entertainment industry is indeed their primary business. And there are most likely a lot of DeuxMoi bills to pay now in running that business.
But there’s a way to do that without relying on lies and rumors. Now that they’re a large company presumably with the assets to hire fact-checkers, why not just hire some and report the truth?
Because that would eat into their bottom line, so why bother, when the typical consumers of their brand apparently could not care any less about the actual truth.
And you’re right, Anon, who has time for the truth when a rumor gets them so much more traction and attention on the interwebz?
DeuxMoi captivates our gullible fame-obsessed society with lies about famous people, not to inform (because what they do off the clock is frankly none of our damn business) but for DeuxMoi to make themselves as much money as possible by exploiting famous people’s vulnerabilities and unabashedly presenting lies and rumors about them as entertainment to a hungry audience who feast on the foibles of the rich and famous.
The only remedy to this issue is for people to be smarter, savvier consumers of DeuxMoi’s pernicious rumors and the gossip-as-entertainment industry as a whole, and/or for DeuxMoi to post their CYA disclaimers on every single thing they present for public consumption. Otherwise they’re just lying by omission about their lying.
X
Thanks for your comment. 😊❣️

jaemin x chenle
Casualty of his dreams by rocketlele (1/1 | 9,088 | M)
School is cancelled and single dad Jaemin needs to find someone to take care of his daughter. The only solution being his neighbour, 23 year old Chenle who owns the local tattoo studio and has a crush on the man stood at his door asking for the favour. Cue, bring your neighbours kid to work day.
two-part trust fall by shuijing (1/1 | 65,000 | E)
"So which one is it? Which half of the old married couple?" Chenle asks, shoving a huge piece of pancake into his mouth.
"Which one is what?" Jaemin says, and sips his coffee.
"Which one are you in love with?" Chenle says, and upon seeing the face Jaemin instinctively makes, dumps more salt on the wound. "Don't give me that look. I know when the person I'm hooking up with is thinking of someone else. It's gotta be one of them. So, Mark or Renjun?"
"Neither," Jaemin finally says, though five years ago the answer would have been different. This coffee is too cold—sharply so—for 8am. "Jeno. Jisung's... boyfriend."
Chenle's eyebrows raise together with another forkful of pancake. "Huh," he says. "Not so predictable, then."

“We don’t like each other like that,” Renjun reminds him.
Mark raises an eyebrow challengingly. “You think he’s cute.”
“And hot,” Donghyuck adds.
“Ignoring all of that,” Renjun says flatly, not wanting to give his friends more things to tease him about. He should be allowed at least a tiny piece of pride to hold on to. He shrugs. “We’re just roommates who get along well, that’s all. It’s not unheard of.”
Both Mark and Donghyuck scoff. Renjun doesn’t appreciate it at all.

When Donghyuck walks into the room, Jaemin realizes he’d sooner face an excruciating death than attempt to start a conversation with his ex-boyfriend. He imagines it would go something like this: Hi. There’s a bunch of power hungry aliens trying to destroy the world as we know it. Red is a good color on you. Is that a new jacket? Also, I think I’m still in love with you.

Jeno just looks ordinary. His dark blue hair slowly fading back to black as it grows out, wearing athletic shorts and an oversized hoodie that he pulls up and over his head. He’s barefoot, barefaced, with his smile lines on full display. He has surprisingly bony knees. Donghyuck can see the outline of his dick in his shorts. His heart is racing just looking at him. Oh, he’s so fucked.

What in God's holy name is toxic positivity and how did it get so popular?
Alright, let's start first with the idea of comedy...and shit comedians.
Here is kinda where it first started.
Racism, Misogyny, transphobia, anti-semitism, homophobia.
Those jokes just aren't funny!
And yet the comedians love to complain that people cannot take a joke when their idea of a joke is so awful and rude.
Rather than admit they're wrong, easier for the hateful people to claim its not their fault, and that their audience is awful. Do you know what I call criticism? I call it being helpful in offering feedback on improvement while also being respectful.
Unfortunately, that's not how critics operate.
They go more along the lines of
Or
So basically, the grand majority of critics, such as fatmanfalling, judgmental critter, twiins iink, and of course the RWDE Community.
They just want to hate, or at least corrupt RWBY into their fetishized image.
But they can't allow others to see what they're doing as being bad.
They can't allow people to see that they truly hate a show and its writers...they want to be seen as victims.
Its easier to get people to hate what you hate, if you claim to be a victim of the show and its fandom.
So the critics demand the right of criticism over all us.
It does not matter how nasty and deceitful their words are. "Freedom of speech and opinion". Even if they're being hateful and dishonest, the claim that they're being oppressed by others who cannot take criticism is very catchy on social media.
And that's the core belief behind the accusations of toxic positivity.
The belief that no matter how nasty or lying you are, you are within your rights to do so, and the people opposing you for such beliefs are trying to silence you because you cannot take criticism or different opinions.
Unfortunately, due to so many youtubers willing to defend the worst haters in the show, and promote hate against men and women defending the show?
It is sadly far easier to hate the show and the fandom based on the rampant misinformation.
its why hbomberguy made a 2.5 hour video of lies. Anyone who does 10 minutes of google search will see that Harris was lying the whole time.
But would you rather spend 10 minutes trying to find truth? Or would you rather watch some bald british dude ranting and hating for 2.5 hours?
Most people prefer to hate. You do not see people making videos defending RWBY, though they are there. You do not see people making videos defending legend of korra. You do not see people making videos defending She-Hulk.
No , you only see videos hating them. And the moment people who like all of those shows stand up, the youtubers immediately call upon their followers and demand harassment of the defenders.
"Monty's vision"....You can look to Monty's Tweets as to what he said about RWBY...but not a single RWBY Critic aka RWDE will EVER bring up those quotes... They'd much rather put words in a dead man's mouth, similar to how Christians love to do so with their prophet. Both dead men were very progressive, yet the "vision" people will never respect that
At the end of the day, these are the critics.
They have this religious hatred towards rwby and its fnadom
Clearly the RWDE community can't be at fault, right?
As TheFloofArtist was putting it.
Imagine making gore and snuff art to hate on women?
Imagine making edits targeting LGBT Women?
Denying that what one does is hateful or malicious, claiming to be a victim.
Its a lot like how Bullies in the school system shame people for standing up against them, and teachers punish not the bullies, oh no, but the bullies' victims.
And this sadly, is the problem.
Toxic positivity...is basically a term used by people who hate on a show and its fandom...as a means of defense against those who disagree with them, and as an intended tool of validation of their hate.
For Gods Sake, RWBY is a cartoon!
Can we stop acting as if RWBY is some crime against humanity just because the villains are straight white males and the protagonists are LGBT-coded females?

AN: Don’t know if I will continue this story, don’t know where I want to go after this chapter, but I do know I’m happy it’s out my head and my drafts.
Trigger Warnings: racial slurs, use of google translate
Isabella Davies, dressed in an elegant, navy blue and white trimmed gown, sat rigidly in a finely upholstered chair on a grand ship called the Kerberos. Daintily, she sipped hot English tea out of a china cup, her dark brown eyes lazily scanning her surroundings over the rim. The dining hall was decorated with wooden paneling on the walls and had floors made of linoleum tiles, featuring an elaborate red, brown, and triangular pattern. Hundreds of tables littered the space, filled with any range from two to five people. Low murmurs floated about in the hall along with clattering of the china, for eight, long days she would have to endure this.
“Morning tea, noon tea, evening tea.” she thought.
This voyage was not one she voluntarily wished to be on. It was not her fault high society and her did not mix for reasons out of her control. Though diamond earrings adorned her ears and a diamond pendant hung from her neck, Isabella would never be seen as one of them.
“Isabella?” Mr. Wood called, causing her to lower her cup and look at him. “Are you listening to me?” he asked, peering over his glasses.
Wilfred Wood, a plump and almost balding man sat beside her. He was her breakfast companion, more than that, he was also her legal guardian since her father passed. He was a kind man, treating her with respect and dignity despite her complexion. However, at the moment, she was in no mood to hear their itinerary; they had more than enough time to discuss it later.
She stared at him with mild interest, “Wholeheartedly,” Isabella responded, placing the porcelain cup onto its saucer.
“Good, as I was saying, once we get to America,” Mr. Wood continued, not picking up on her sarcasm.
Isabella tuned him out once more, shifting her blank gaze to two tables from them. There sat a young couple who looked to be about her age. Although, Isabella felt the term was being used too loosely by her. If she opened a dictionary and searched for the word unhappiness, the two of their faces would be plastered next to the definition. Isabella couldn’t help but carefully watch their interaction with each other. The pretty, brunette attempting to engage in conversation with her handsome husband who’s attention lied elsewhere; she quickly followed his stare to discover he was looking at the geisha across the room.
She could see the distance between the man and woman, it was plainly obvious if you knew what to look for. Isabella, for reasons unknown to her, was immediately captivated by this man. Curly brown hair, light blue eyes, a well groomed mustache above plump lips, even the determined line of his jaw. Isabella wanted to get to know him better, but in a way, she felt she almost knew him already. Wrapping her fingers around the handle of the teacup again, she went to raise it to her lips when her eyes noticed faint movement at the bottom of the couple’s table.
Isabella’s eyes drifted down to the source and was shocked to find it came from the handsome man himself. Just out of sight of everyone, his left hand began to tremble uncontrollably. Furrowing her brows, Isabella shifted her eyes up to find the man staring back at her. Startled, she quickly turned her head and looked straight ahead, sipping at her cooling tea.
“Isabella!” Mr. Wood called again, his voice low.
“Yes, Mr. Wood,” she replied, glancing at him.
“You have not listened to a single word I’ve said have you?” he questioned.
“I have,” Isabella said, quietly putting the cup down. “With the utmost interest,” she added, an easy smile on her lips.
He looked at her for a moment, “Repeat to me what I just said,” Mr. Wood challenged simply.
Isabella’s savior to answering the demand, came in the form of a scarred, lanky man from third class suddenly bursting into the dining hall, shouting in a foreign language. She welcomed it, because she didn’t have the faintest idea of what Mr. Wood had been droning on about. Still yelling, the man’s shouts echoed in the hall while passengers nervously looked around at each other. Isabella concentrated on the man’s words, trying to put her lessons to use to decipher what he was saying. The language he was speaking vaguely sounded like German, but she knew it couldn’t be as she would’ve understood him perfectly.
“I think he’s trying to ask for something,” Isabella whispered, looking at Mr. Wood, his thick brows raised.
“Doctor!” the man exclaimed, desperately looking around the room.
Just as he managed to say the one word in English, three crew members came from behind him and roughly dragged him out the room. A second had barely passed when a redheaded woman jumped from her seat to find the man who was dragged away. Slowly, hushed conversations resumed in the hall.
“Well,” Mr. Wood began, dabbing the corners of his mouth with a cream colored napkin. “That was enough excitement for the morning,” he remarked, putting the cloth onto the table and standing up. “Let us go, where you’ll be less distracted as we discuss what is to come, hmm,” he said, outstretching his hand for her to follow him.
She exhaled, “I do not have much of a choice, do I?” Isabella retorted, rising to her feet.
Side by side, they walked to the double doors and Isabella briefly glanced off to her left. Like magnets, dark brown eyes locked with a familiar pair of blue ones and at that moment, it was as if time slowed. Gliding past him, their eyes never left each other’s. Isabella was mesmerized. She began to wonder how many other women had gazed into them, held fixed by the wordless spell? With a soft creak, the trance Isabella was in shattered, forcing her to look ahead and follow Mr. Wood out the doors.
~~~x~~~
Isabella’s fingers mindlessly tapped against the railing, imagining them as piano keys as she looked out into the bleak, gray sky.
“This was your plan all along, to cozy up to him! You have robbed the both of us from our father’s inheritance, his blood! You two-faced, negress whore!”
Echoes of the upsetting memory floated through her mind, unsettling her and causing her palms to tremble. Tilting her head, Isabella closed her eyes as a gentle sea breeze blew, sending the loose strands of her dark hair across her face. The sound of waves lapping against the ship soothed her as the steel behemoth cut its way through the ocean bound for America.
“Est-ce que quelqu'un vous l'a dit, regarder est impoli?” a deep, male voice stated, standing beside her. (Has anyone told you, staring is rude?)
Isabella’s eyes opened, her head whipping to the side and she was pleasantly surprised to see the slim frame of the handsome man from earlier. She relished the temporary distraction from her sullen memories.
“A Frenchman,” she thought.
“Pour être juste, je crois que tu regardais aussi,” (To be fair, I believe you were also staring.) Isabella responded smoothly, a small grin tugging at her lips. “On peut difficilement appeler ça du regard, si ce n'était qu'un simple coup d'œil,” (One can hardly call it staring, if it was but a simple glance.)
His eyes widened slightly, surprised Isabella responded in his tongue.
“Tu parles français?” (You speak French?)
“Oui,” she nodded. “Je m'appelle Isabelle, Isabelle Davies,” she said, flashing him a friendly smile.
He merely stared at her, “Isabelle, un si beau nom,” the Frenchman commented. (Isabella, such a beautiful name.)
Blood rushed to her cheeks, “Merci,” Isabella said, bowing her head shyly. “Et tu?” she asked, gesturing to him.
“Lucien,”
“Au plaisir de vous rencontrer Lucien,” (A pleasure to meet you, Lucien.)
His eyes trailed over her face as if he was trying to commit it to his memory. Shifting his weight to one leg to another, he moved closer to her.
“S'est-on déjà rencontrés? Il y a quelque chose en toi qui m'est familier,” Lucien commented. (Have we met before? There is something about you that's familiar to me.)
“Non,” Isabella shook her head. “Sauf si vous avez visité Londres récemment,” she added, with a hint of playfulness. (Unless you have visited London recently.)
Lucien’s lips quirked up a little, “Non, je n'ai pas encore eu le plaisir,” he said, chuckling half heartedly. (No, I have not had the pleasure yet.)
Isabella mirrored his expression before a silence fell between them, she lowered her gaze taking to studying the deck at her feet. Glancing upwards, she quietly observed Lucien. Both of his hands were tightly clutched around the railing, to the point his knuckles had turned white. There was a tightness in his jaw ceasing as he gazed at the white foam the ship left it in its wake.
"Your secret is safe with me," Isabella said suddenly. The words came tumbling out before she could stop herself.
Lucien’s head jerked in her direction. His expression expectant as his eyes met hers. He wanted her to say it. Isabella chose her next words carefully.
"À propos de votre état," she finished, in French. (About your condition.)
He searched her face intensely, looking for deceit and Isabella held his stare. Only the waves continuing to lap against the ship bore witness to their interaction. Without taking his eyes of off her, he stepped closer to Isabella, just enough for their proximity to be still considered socially proper.
“Merci,”
“De rien,”
Isabella went to speak, but just beyond Lucien’s shoulder she spotted the prying eyes of Virginia Wilson, who appeared to be taking great interest in their conversation.
“I should go,” she said hurriedly, focusing back on him.
“Non,” he protested softly, reaching out to her.
“Mr. Wood is no doubt searching for me,” Isabella guessed, stepping away from him. “C'était un plaisir de vous rencontrer, Lucien,” she added, smiling sweetly at him. (It was nice meeting you, Lucien.)
Isabella didn’t give him a chance to respond, immediately turning around and walking along the side of the rail. The heels of her boots loudly clacking against the wooden deck, the noise reverberating in the still air.
24 year-old Isabella sat silently at one of the small tables in her late father’s study. Murmured conversations between her brothers and other guest happened all around her, but she didn’t dare speak. The death of her father had all but numbed her to human emotion. The executor cleared his throat, silencing the room.
"As you know, you have all been summoned to hear the last will and testament of William Davies,” he began, taking a seat behind the desk.
He took a single sheet of paper out of his leather briefcase. Isabella had no expectations for herself inheriting much if anything. She was his adopted child, not blood. She glanced beside her where Henry, her brother was, a smug expression painted on his face.
“I, William John Davies, being of sound mind, do hereby after mature deliberation, declare the following to be my last Will and Testament with respect to such property as may be left by me at the time of my death.
“To my daughter, Isabella Lucy Davies I leave the remainder of the Davies fortune and the whole of the estate Davies Estate, Kenbrick Manor including everything residing inside it,”
Isabella nearly fell out of her chair.
“This money is to be left in under the control of Wilfred Wood, until such time as Isabella reaches the age of 25 and contents of the inheritance are turned over to her control. This Will and Testament is the only one valid, and revokes all my previous testamentary dispositions, should any such exist after my death,” he finished.
The executor placed the paper back into his briefcase and folded his hands to look over the room.
"This is outrageous!” Henry shouted, seething in anger.
Isabella shifted in her seat uncomfortably, knowing it wasn’t the chair bringing her discomfort, far from it. Rather, it was feeling the brunt of everyone’s stares and what they meant. She was now the heiress to an enormous fortune, every pence her father owned and the family manor.
“Father cut us out the will and is giving everything to her!” Matthew exclaimed in disbelief. “A colored urchin he plucked from the streets,” he sneered.
“How much is the remainder of Father’s fortune?” Henry demanded.
"The remainder is about £300,00,” the executor replied matter of factly.
"Three hundred pounds," Isabella repeated breathlessly, speaking for the first time.
I am feeling rather ill. I think the sea air is getting to me. Please excuse me to my cabin." Ruth looked up from her conversation and nodded.
"Of course, dear. Go."
In a dreamlike trance,
The sight and smell of those about her all merged into one along with the the smell of the fresh paints and the feel of plush new carpets beneath her feet. It was all so beautiful. So brand new.
Rose's body woke her up sharply at five in the morning. Slowly, she propped herself up on her elbow and scanned the room. The first hints of the day were beginning to shed through the curtains.
Olivia woke the next morning to her bedroom curtains being thrown open and bright sunlight pouring into the room.
Look Who’s Lurking Here!
I am! 😂 Why am I not writing here? Because every time I think about it, I decide that it’s not worth it, so I don’t write. Well, today I decided to say something. About a week ago have found a fan fiction that I got so excited about, I wanted it to go on. AS A JOKE I have written a comment saying something along the lines: “Dude, why did you leave the story here? I can totally see where it would go next! .... Then I proceeded writing at least 3 paragraphs .... .... Then something happened with my phone and everything I wrote disappeared ... I was so angry! Three paragraphs gone-zie. I jumped on my laptop to re-write those same 3 paragraphs, but this time in a Google doc. Then I thought: “Hmm. If only I add 2 more paragraphs, it’s almost like another chapter.” But you see, I couldn’t do it, because it would be like stealing. To give myself an easy out, I reached out to the wonderful author, giving them an option to stop me from doing that. Oh, well, they let me down 😁 Unlike GRRM, who says that “No one gets to abuse the people of Westeros but me,” I was given a green light by heidihendricks 😲📗 Normally that would be the end of it. But by then I was running fever for the 2nd day in a row. I was bored and extremely uncomfortable - I couldn’t even sleep. Basically, I didn’t have a clear mind or anything better to do. So, since I had already written 3 paragraphs, I decided to add 2 more. Which turned into 4, then 6 more. Then it kept growing and I had to remind myself that it’s better to write a good short-size chapter than dream of writing a long story and never finish it. Nothing wrong with long stories - I was simply not confident that my fever would last long enough for that. Luckily, I was better the next day and now I am back being my normal happy silent self 😶😊 I love you all, awesome people 🥰❤ ADDENDUM: The reaction I received on AO3 is mind-blowing. Thank you, heidihendricks Sleepy2clouds albinokittens300 Korbuda Lilium_convallium thistleandthorn attonitos_gloria for your kind words and every single one of you who gave me kudos! Now, off to search for my blown-away mind 😂
It used to be a cola factory but it got turned into offices after the fire, and since then people are unsure if it's still being used. The land isn't for sale but they don't seem to keep up with the outside over grown architecture. I open the front door casually and enter the building. Inside is large and dark, but there is a single old style card punch out machine on the wall at the entrance. I pick up my card and put in my headphones, starting my shift. Next to the punch out machine there is a filing cabinet, one drawer labeled with today's date. I grab the first file and flip through it, then head into the rest of the building. Rows upon rows of well organized documents line bookshelves that stretch from floor to ceiling. A few over head lights illuminate the space, along with whatever sunlight can filter in through the dirty windows. Large rolling ladders are attached to each book shelf, and each shelf is labeled in alphabetical order, than date, than subject. I spend the next 6 hours taking files out of the filing cabinet and putting them away on these shelves, undisturbed. At the end of the day I punch out and walk back to my house. Time to be controversial:
So I'm in school right now at an internationally recognized, accredited college. I'm taking an intro class to computer programming and an introduction to Python. The only requisites for this class were that you needed to know how to turn on a computer.
1st day of class, we're told that instead of us spending over $100 on a textbook, we were instead supposed to choose an AI search engine, put prompts from the teacher provided PowerPoints, and build our own textbook as the class goes along.
Needless to say, the class was stunned with silence.
He proceeded to tell us that we were his guinea pig class to test this out and he expected us all to get 100% A's because everything we were graded on (HW, quizzes, exams, everything) was open note, open book, open internet.
Now I've been following the discussion and capabilities on AI for a while in several different industries that it has been effecting. (Art, code, hiring/HR, professional writing) and every single one of them has said that AI is not reliable and is quickly approaching the status of shitification. Like a snake eating it's tail, it is slowly corrupting its own data by feeding itself it's own incorrect data.
Coming from a fine art background with 2 degrees in it already, I had never used AI before. I finally used chatgpt because of this programming class, and what I found was surprising. The way it answers questions was very straight forward and reminded me a lot of how the Internet worked in the late 90s/early 2000s. The prompts need to be very specific and they're good for getting the ball rolling on understanding base line information. Really, it's a great tool for preliminary research, and then seeking out other websites to deep dive further into actual articles and research papers. It is NOT good or shouldn't be used for finished end products (essays, papers, ART, creative works.) it's also trash at math ATM.
Still, my experience with it in the field of learning python coding to help understanding what certain functions do/are, and in my business class for gathering information on infrastructure in an area half way across the world for a potential Olympics there, has been extremely helpful.
In the past I would get frustrated with swimming through the trash heap of AD and Sponsored articles on Google search to get a simple question answered. I used to turn to reddit for answers because Google got so terrible with it. But reddit was more opinion and first hand experience based. Great for insight into an industry from a people perspective but not great in answering the question: what does the "f" do in python's print(f"..")
Chatgpt was great for that.
I still think AI is good and bad for the art/creative industries. If used ethically (paying the artists and getting their permission) in gathering it's data sets. It could be a very helpful tool in selecting color palates, workshoping compositions, and generating a written idea prompt to get a piece started. It should not/never be used for finished final products.
But that's just my 2 cents.
“i asked chatgpt-” ohhh ok so nothing you are about to say matters at all
Unveiling the Disparities: An Investigation into Police Misconduct in Lee County
In recent months, I embarked on a thorough investigation into police misconduct within the Lee County Sheriff’s Office in Florida, aiming to uncover the extent of reported infractions among deputies. What I found revealed a troubling disparity in how misconduct is perceived and reported, particularly along racial lines. Despite the prevalence of complaints and incidents involving predominantly white officers, it was a single case involving a Black officer, Tyrese Jackson, that dominated the search results, raising important questions about transparency and equity in law enforcement.
The Case of Tyrese Jackson
In January, a complaint was filed against Deputy Tyrese Jackson, alleging that he took money during a traffic stop. The Lee County Sheriff’s Office responded promptly, placing Jackson on administrative leave while detectives from the Major Crimes Unit conducted an investigation. This incident, however, was one among many that likely occur within the department, yet it was the only one that appeared prominently in online searches regarding police misconduct in the area.
As I scoured various news sources and databases, I was struck by the stark absence of coverage on misconduct involving white officers. A simple Google search for “Lee County police misconduct” yielded a plethora of articles detailing the alleged wrongdoings of Jackson, while reports of misconduct among the predominantly white deputies, sergeants, and sheriffs were notably scarce.
Racial Disparities in Reporting
This disparity raises critical questions about the representation of police misconduct in Lee County. According to data from the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program, racial disparities persist not only in arrests but also in how communities perceive and report misconduct. The overwhelming focus on the misconduct of a single Black officer, amidst a sea of white counterparts, hints at a broader systemic issue—one where the actions of white officers are often overlooked or go unreported.
Several studies indicate that public perceptions of policing are heavily influenced by media portrayals. The visibility of Black officers involved in misconduct can perpetuate negative stereotypes about entire communities, while white officers may escape similar scrutiny. This phenomenon is compounded by the fact that Black officers often face greater public scrutiny, leading to a disproportionate representation of misconduct cases involving them.
The Broader Context of Police Misconduct
Nationally, concerns about police misconduct are not new. The Black Lives Matter movement and numerous high-profile incidents have shed light on systemic issues within law enforcement agencies. However, the narrative surrounding police misconduct often centers on racialized portrayals, which can obscure broader patterns of behavior within departments.
In Lee County, the lack of transparency surrounding the disciplinary actions taken against white officers raises serious concerns. Are complaints against white officers being buried or minimized? Are these officers receiving different treatment than their Black counterparts? These questions demand answers.
Community Perspectives
To further investigate the issue, I reached out to community members and local activists for their perspectives on police conduct in Lee County. Many expressed frustration over the apparent lack of accountability within the Sheriff’s Office, particularly regarding white officers. One community leader noted, “It feels like we’re only hearing about Black officers when something goes wrong, while the misconduct of white officers gets swept under the rug.”
Residents also highlighted instances of police violence and excessive force that have not led to public scrutiny or disciplinary action against the involved officers, pointing to a lack of transparency in how complaints are handled.
Calls for Accountability and Reform
The findings of this investigation illustrate the urgent need for accountability and reform within the Lee County Sheriff’s Office. Community members and advocates are calling for greater transparency in reporting incidents of misconduct, regardless of the officer’s race. They argue that all officers should be held to the same standards, and that the public deserves to know the full scope of police behavior in their community.
Activists are also advocating for independent oversight of police departments to ensure that misconduct investigations are conducted fairly and transparently. This could help to restore trust in law enforcement and prevent implicit biases from influencing perceptions of who is more likely to engage in misconduct.
To end the article…
The investigation into police misconduct in Lee County highlights a troubling disparity in how misconduct is reported and perceived. While Tyrese Jackson’s case garnered significant attention, the lack of visibility surrounding the actions of predominantly white officers raises critical questions about accountability and fairness within the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.
As communities demand justice and accountability, it is essential to address these disparities to foster a more equitable and transparent policing system. The fight for justice should not only focus on the actions of a few but also encompass the systemic issues that allow misconduct to persist unchecked. Only then can we hope to build a law enforcement system that truly serves and protects all members of the community.
Saturday, 10 August
I’ve recently read Annie Ernaux’s Exteriors, in which she conjures up a French new town’s shopping plaza and commuter culture of the 80s and 90s in the slimmest of vignettes. These looks at new suburbia are both humane and bleak. Obviously, my scenic trips to the seaside are nothing like the neutral canvas on which a titan like Ernaux works, but I like the idea of trying to present each weekend from a single viewpoint.
The vibe on the veranda at the Walpole Bay Hotel is typically English Oasis. Ornamental bushes screen the railings, and their signature red geranium pots complete the gracious greenhouse feel. Usually, I luxuriate in the suntrap with little care for the outside world. Today, if different. I’m Pride spotting. Small groups of friends in their gladdest of rags saunter past. People are not so much sporting rainbows and embodying them. Nobody stops. It’s kick-off time for the parade and I’m alone on the veranda except for one other person wearing matching floral print shorts and button up, working through a cream tea served in the hotel’s florid floral china. I mark them down as an attendee. I’m wearing my most ostentatious Pride outfit to date: a black t-shirt with a thin strip of pink, purple, and blue; black combat boots with a lace in the same colours. Wild, truly.
I cycled up to my friend’s house this morning expecting breakfast only to be bundled immediately into the car and my bike lashed to the boot. No time for food. We don’t want to miss the Seadog Parade, they informed me. The only CDs in the car were Avant Guard or the Jeff Buckley album everyone listened to in college. Now I have Lilac Wine stuck in my head. Owing to the vagaries of google maps, they have absolutely missed the Seadog Parade but ventured off in pursuit nevertheless, while I have pinned all my hopes on the hotel. There’s nothing else but ice cream vans this close to the beach. An oasis indeed. Though my sole goal upon entering the hotel was securing food, I’ve somehow positioned myself perfectly along the parade route. From there, says a man in the high-vis vest standing in the street authoritatively, we’ll enter the high street. Now hopefully we won’t have any trouble getting through the town centre. The security detail for the parade nods. They look like very average humans. What exactly are they going to do if it kicks off?
I’m halfway through my crustless eye mayo sandwich – the closest thing to breakfast you can buy at midday – when the parade appears. Shelly Grotto, the local celebrity, leads out the traditional drag queen front line shouting out greetings. I stand up to watch the parade over the ornamental hedge, a scrolled teacup in one hand and a finger sandwich in the other. Do I look as if I’m standing in solidarity, or just condescending to watch? They definitely cannot see my custom bootlaces from here. My floral two-piece friend stands too, looking flustered. Possibly they were supposed to march. It starts earlier and earlier each year, they mutter. The glamour of the queens gives way to the drumbeats and Palestinian flags. One struggle, one fight; healthcare is a human right! The community choir swells the sound with an invitation to heal the world. I decide to join them next year. Even though my favourite MJ social justice song is obviously Man in the Mirror. By the time we’ve got to the flag-draped ambulance service, I’m ready to go in search of my dog-fancying friends. My fellow customer in the floral ensemble orders a second cream tea. Impressive. The scones here aren’t small.
How BigQuery Data Canvas Makes AI-Powered Insights Easy
A Gemini feature in BigQuery, the BigQuery Studio data canvas provides a graphical interface for analysis processes and natural language prompts for finding, transforming, querying, and visualising data.
A directed acyclic graph (DAG) is used by BigQuery data canvas for analysis workflows, giving you a graphical representation of your workflow. Working with many branches of inquiry in one location and iterating on query results are both possible with BigQuery data canvas.
BigQuery data canvas
The BigQuery data canvas is intended to support you on your path from data to insights. Working with data doesn’t require technical expertise of particular products or technologies. Using natural language, BigQuery data canvas and Dataplex metadata combine to find relevant tables.
Gemini in BigQuery is used by BigQuery data canvas to locate your data, build charts, create SQL, and create data summaries.
Capabilities
BigQuery data canvas lets you do the following:
Use keyword search syntax along with Dataplex metadata to find assets such as tables, views, or materialized views.
Use natural language for basic SQL queries such as the following:
Queries that contain FROM clauses, math functions, arrays, and structs.
JOIN operations for two tables.
Visualize data by using the following types graphic types:
Bar chart
Heat map
Line graph
Pie chart
Scatter chart
Create custom visualizations by using natural language to describe what you want.
Automate data insights.
Limitations
Natural language commands might not work well with the following:
BigQuery ML
Apache Spark
Object tables
BigLake
INFORMATION_SCHEMA views
JSON
Nested and repeated fields
Complex functions and data types such as DATETIME and TIMEZONE
Data visualizations don’t work with geomap charts.
A ground-breaking data analytics tool, BigQuery data canvas, a Gemini in BigQuery feature, streamlines the whole data analysis process from data preparation and discovery to analysis, visualisation, and collaboration – all in one location, all within BigQuery. You may ask questions in both plain English and a variety of other languages about your data using the BigQuery data canvas, which makes use of natural language processing.
Because sophisticated SQL queries don’t need to be developed using this easy method, data analysis is now accessible to both technical and non-technical people. You may examine, modify, and display your BigQuery data using data canvas without ever leaving the environment in which it is stored.
This blog post provides a technical walkthrough of a real-world scenario utilising the public github_repos dataset, along with an overview of BigQuery data canvas. Over 3TB of activity from 3M+ open-source repositories are included in this dataset. We’ll look at how to respond to inquiries like:
In a year, how many commits were made to a particular repository?
In a particular year, who authored the most repositories?
Over time, how many non-authored commits were applied?
Which users, at what time, contributed to a certain file?
You’ll see how data canvas manages intricate SQL operations from your natural language prompts, such as joining tables, extracting particular data items, unnesting fields, and converting timestamps. We’ll even show you how to use just one click to create intelligent summaries and visualisations.
BigQuery data canvas quickly overview
BigQuery data canvas is mostly used for three types of tasks: finding data, generating SQL, and generating insights.Image credit to Google Cloud
Find Data
To locate data in BigQuery using a rapid keyword search or a natural language text prompt, use data canvas.
Generate SQL
Additionally, you may use the BigQuery data canvas to have SQL code written for you using natural language prompts powered by Gemini.
Create Insights
At last, use a single click to uncover insights concealed within your data! Gemini creates visualisations for you automatically so you can see the story your data is telling.
Using the BigQuery data canvas
Let’s look at an example to help you better understand the potential impact that the BigQuery data canvas can have in your company. Businesses of all kinds, from big corporations to tiny startups, can gain from having a better grasp of the productivity of their development staff. Google Cloud will demonstrate in this in-depth technical tutorial how to leverage data canvas and the public dataset github_repos to provide insightful results in a shared workspace.
You’ll learn how data canvas simplifies the creation of sophisticated SQL queries by working through this example, which demonstrates how to create joins and unnested columns, convert timestamps, extract the month and year from date fields, and more. Gemini’s features make it simple to create these queries and use natural language to examine your data with illuminating visualisations.
Please be aware that using any LLM-enabled application successfully requires strong prompt engineering abilities, just like using many of the new AI products and services available today. Many people might believe that large language models (LLMs) aren’t very excellent at producing SQL right out of the box. However, in our experience, Gemini in BigQuery via data canvas may produce sophisticated SQL queries using the context of your data corpus if you use the appropriate prompting mechanisms. It is evident that data canvas uses natural language queries to decide the ordering, grouping, sorting, record count limitation, and SQL structure.
The github_repos dataset, which is 3TB+ in size and can be found in Bigquery Public Datasets, comprises information in numerous tables regarding commits, watch counts, and other activity on 3M+ open-source projects. We want to look at the Google Cloud Platform repository for this example. As always, before you begin, make sure you have the necessary IAM permissions. In addition, make sure you have the necessary rights to access the datasets and data canvas in order to run nodes properly.
Using data canvas makes it simple to explore every table in the github_repos dataset. Here, Google Cloud evaluate schema, details, and preview data in one panel while comparing datasets side by side.Image credit to Google cloud
After choosing your dataset, you can hover over the bottom of the node to branch it to query or join it with another table. The dataset for the following transformation node is shown by arrows. For clarity, you can give each node a name when sharing the canvas. You can delete, debug, duplicate, or run all of the nodes in a series using the options in the upper right corner. Results can be downloaded, and data can be exported to Looker Studio or Sheets. In the navigation panel, you can also inspect the DAG structure, restore previous versions, and rate SQL suggestions.
Google examine four main facets of their data while examining the github_repos dataset. They will attempt to ascertain the following:
1) The total number of commitments made in a single year
2) The quantity of written repos for a specific year
3) The total number of non-authored commits that were applied throughout time
4) Determine how many user commits there have been for a specific file at a specific time.
Utilise BigQuery data canvas to simplify data analysis
It might be challenging to interpret data for a new project or use case when working with large datasets that span multiple disciplines. This procedure can be streamlined by using data canvas. Data canvas helps you work more efficiently and quickly by streamlining data analysis using natural language-based SQL creation and visualisations. It also reduces the need for repetitive queries and lets you plan automatic data refreshes.
New Vinyl New Artist
It would be a whole-ass lie to say I am some kind of music aficionado, when listening to streaming music I listen to the same five playlist on Spotify. When it comes to my vinyl I spent most of my collection restoring records I had back in the 90s. Then I focused in on certain artist I like, like getting Janet Jackson's entire discography on vinyl.
I am not closed to new music, but am not always exposed to new artist even though I listen to alt.latino on NPR. I am picky about the vocals of my artist, and I really prefer to BUY new music on vinyl. I know a lot of these artist stream their work, but why have a vinyl collection if you're not always adding to it?
Another way I hear new music are artist interviews on NPR, soundtracks from television shows or maybe something played in a podcast. I decided to put together a listicle of five of my favorite vinyl albums of artist I had never heard of and or never heard music from.
Amythyst Kiah - Wary Strange
I don't even know how to pronounce this artist name, but I heard her song "Black Myself" in an artist interview on NPR, and before it was even over I started Googling her artist website.
I am also not really sure how to categorize her maybe alternative folk rock? To be honest I have to be in the mood for this album, its doesn't get played as much of some as some of my other new music, not because I don't like it, but because its hard for me to pair it with other music.
Usually when I am listening to music, I like to think of other albums to play after it, and this is a stand-alone album that its hard for me to pair. I could do some Tracey Chapman or maybe some Lenny Kravitz, but she really has her own sound and she really changes up the tracks on the album.
But as I said in the intro, I love her vocals a little reminiscent of Dionne Farris from Arrested Development fame, she was also a very alternative artist who I find hard to pair with, even though I love her debut album "Wild Seed – Wild Flower".
Conan Grey - Superache
Wow, I couldn't even remember Conan's name as I was typing him into this listicle I was searching for Connor Grey! This aside I was very moved by a track called "Family Line" a song about alcoholism and familial physical abuse/violence, I found this very relatable.
I couldn't tell you what Conan's race was or sexuality, but I could tell you I love his smooth tenor vocals and very personal lyrics about his love life and friendships.
This is an album that has a more upbeat tempo but sometimes very sad subjects. I enjoy singing along with the young Mr. Grey. I can't overstate how when it comes to music, I am really just about the music.
I have a Led Zeppelin album and I couldn't even tell you if that is a single person or multiple people or what any of them look like. I wasn't remotely interested in seeing any of Conan's videos or seeing interviews, I just love this album!
bells atlas - the mystic
This was my first time buying an album from Bandcamp I don't think it gets anymore farm to table than that, meaning I really try to buy albums directly from the artist websites as opposed to other secondary markets like eBay or Best Buy.
I think I heard on NPR that buying music directly from the artist sites puts more of the money in the artist pocket. And I do genuinely want to support the artist, as an artist I understand how its important to get a bigger portion of the pie yourself not getting your monies diluted by agents, managers and in their case record companies.
Now I can't recall if this was the site where they let you choose what you want to pay, but I did have one of these smaller artist have that option and I paid the standard thirty-five bucks which to me is the standard for a single vinyl album.
I clearly recall where I heard a song from this "group" I think, remember I am not studying that kind of details. But Glenn Washington the host of Snap Judgement used the end of one of their episodes to play a track from bells atlas. I used Shazam and Google to quickly find who this frenetic music was from and ordered the album immediately!
I am pretty sure the lead vocalist is a Black woman, what I loved is the music, it wasn't R&B, maybe alternative club rock & roll music? I don't know why we feel the need to label music can't we just enjoy the sounds based on their own merits?
I love the fast-paced high energy music paired with the round and robust vocals, its totally pick-me-up music. I love pairing it with my Eric B & Rakim "Paid In Full" album they both are very upbeat and have lots of beats and rhythms. This is the kind of album I put on when I need to go outside and want to get energized before I leave the house!
José González - Local Valley
Mr. González be all up in my mentions, I love using that term, that isn't quite true but I seem to keep encountering his music on my television shows that it seems like he is following me. I first encountered him on NPR in a music interview, and I loved the soothing quiet tones of his vocals and accompanying music.
Primarily I use José's music to relax, calm down or get ready for bed. He seems to be able to magically take my anxiety and reduce it to a dull-ache and not a explosive-burst.
I heard something else of his recently looked up the album which was from a soundtrack of a 90s film and the album was like fourteen hundred dollars. Now I did sometimes put out a couple of hundred dollars for my Janet albums but I am not paying thousands of dollars for an album that I will only play during certain times. I do have an eBay search looking for a cheaper version.
Mr. González is a mix of two cultures what we used to call a bi-racial child, I think part is Mexican and the other part something Northern European, please fact-check me cause I wasn't studying any of these details. The only other personal information I recall about him was that he was in a group before, because I was looking for another song of his and found it under another name.
Right now he's hanging out in one of my tabs for consideration of me buying another one of his albums. Some artist end up having several albums in my collection sometimes surprising even me. I didn't realize I was such a big Alicia Keys & Lenny Kravitz fan I have about five albums from each of them.
Willow Smith - Empathogen
Okay okay okay, yes I know the fame of young Ms. Smith's family hardly makes her an unknown factor and I am not even gonna fix my face to lie that "Whip My Hair" wasn't a bop that was on high rotation in my home. But none of that was driven by her, her family wanted another pop-star and were seeking to create one. She clearly rebelled cutting off all of her hair showing that this isn't who she is.
I also watched this young woman who could easily be my niece hold her own with her very beautiful and formidable grandmother and moms Mrs. Jada Pinkett-Smitth at the red table. So I clearly know who she is, but I don't or didn't know who she was as an artist and this album gave me the opportunity to get into her head a bit more.
Full disclosure I am not one of those people who study lyrics or muddle over musical bars trying to find hidden meaning in the music. Half the time I don't even really understand what folks are saying, music is something that fills the background in my studio apartment. I am usually either writing, reading or doing something else around the house when I feel the need to bump some tunes. Unlike everything else on this list YouTube served up one of her videos to me, don't ask me which one, all I remember is she was laying down for the entire thing and it was shot from above.
YouTube knows my heart and knows I love Black artist and they didn't get it wrong sending me the young Ms. Smith. After the video ended I was already on her artist site looking for her new album.
It was on pre-order and after the Aaliyah experience I wasn't doing any more pre-orders, but the release date was only a little over a week away so I would just wait till May to cop it. There were a few technical bumps with the site, but then I finally got my copy and it was love at first listen.
Frankly not one album on this list I hated, I do have an album from a trans artist Beverly Glenn-Copeland called "Transmissions: The Music of Beverly Glenn-Copeland" where I wasn't crazy about two tracks, the opening one which has an operatic beginning and this other at the end of the first side that has this call and response.
Mx. Glenn-Copeland's speaking voice isn't my favorite thing, so the call and response is a bit grating to me. Otherwise I LOVE the album. I love their vocals and song choice, I love where they sing in their voice. I am thinking I should maybe attempt to look at Ms. Smith's lyrics and see what else she's trying to express, but I am NOT-THAT-PERSON, I'm the one who gets an album and only listens to the album, doesn't read liner notes, doesn't even open any included booklets with the album.
Ms. Knowles-Carter's Renaissance album came with I think two books which haven't as much as been cracked. I am one of those odd folks who just want to hear the music. I have now reserved my loud-time for Friday nights and Ms. Smith will be bumping Ms. Knowles-Carter out of her spot as my Friday night dance party album. But Beyince Act II will pair quite well with Empathogens's kinectic youthful and fun energies!
