Ino loved Sakura through all her phases–sometimes from up close, and sometimes from afar. Sometimes her love was sweet and bright, like dango-sticks. Other times it drilled deep into parts of her that were dark, cold and dampened like the underlayers of scorched, fertile soil. 

She loved things from their beginning, loved them to their end once or twice.

Her mother had told her she was simply made that way–born with soil in one hand, and seeds in the other, always looking for places to plant roots, seeking new lives to nurture and tend to. A true florist's daughter, able to coax even the shyest petals to unfurl in the light with the gentle strength of her hands. Some were poisonous, some healing and others that could provide sustenance and strength.

From the day she first laid eyes on a girl with cherry blossom hair and rose petal cheeks, lily pad eyes and a cherry-like mouth, it was as if all she dreamed of was spring. 

Sakura. 

She tended to her with more care than she gave to any of the other beings that grew in her garden. She was Ino’s special blossom, which at the beginning needed consistent attention and murmured words to coax quivering buds to spread open fragile petals. Her project of passion that could so easily be scared into dormancy by a strong breeze or droplet of icy water.

She fertilized her soil with her own two hands, imbuing confidence, grit, nutrients of character. She showered her with praises, moistening delicate stems so they might grow firmer, stronger to withstand the harsh winds of harsher words and cutting gazes. 

Ino watched and waited, cradled her close and stiffened her spine when she wilted, when she cried her petals dry. Some days, she wanted to keep her in glass, protect her in full bloom, for people to admire but only herself to reach in and feel.

She pushed when all she wanted was to pull closer, forcing herself away from this sprouting blossom she’d planted, watching as her roots burrow deeper, spread farther than just her own garden. And, oh, did she bloom: a wild thing invading outside soils, rooting itself and taking shape in so many other peoples’ hearts.

And when she was torn, uprooted by his traumas and psychotic machinations, Ino was there once more. Cradling her in gentle hands, carefully replanting. She became sunlight, and drowned her cherry blossom in it. She poured and poured, until Sakura no longer wilted, until the stems thickened and petals unfurled in the brightest shade of pink she had ever seen.

When the day came that the earth split and fell open under their feet and the sky bled with the tears of a thousand lifetimes, she finally looked with her eyes instead of searching for meaning with her planter’s hands.

Ino saw Sakura in a way she had never before. She realized that her blossom, her beloved flower, thrived best under conditions that she was not able to provide. No matter the ways in which she tended her, shielded her (and trimmed away at her, clipped her stems) she grew, stretching higher, branching wide and bright in the nighttime, face upturned to the dark, luminescence of a stoic night sky.

So, she watched as the flower was plucked from her garden, silencing the cries of her aching heart and focusing instead on the way those blood-stained hands handled the blossoms with such care, fingers scarred and gnarled, stroking against those vibrant petals oh so gently. 

She would be planted elsewhere to sweeten the worlds with her fragrance; she could only hope it was under the widest and starriest of skies.

Yugao, Ino mused— breathless as she watched him watch her, with those deep, dark, eyes— would have been a better name for a woman who blossomed as Sakura did, under the dark gray and lavender sides of the moon.

ok mercury retrograde is a fic based on a really goofy premise called "what if i shit on all the canon pairings at once?" via the medium of gaalee fanfic. it's essentially a story told from all of the other konoha 12 POVs where everyone on earth is having relationship (or pining) problems except, apparently, gaara and lee, who (in the POV of non-overlapping people, so no one makes the connection) seem to have secret paramours that are perfect for them hooHA. some start pairs include sasusaku, naruhina, and inosai, and end pairs being sns, inosaku, kibahina, etc. shikatema and chokarui stick the landing but. i like them well enough xo

I like this one a lot! It's actually pretty rare for a canon female relationship to be both Spicy and also genuinely caring. I don't feel like most InoSaku content actually digs into the complexity (both sweet and ugly) as much as they deserve, but I'm into the idea. (I think there's a fandom trend of treating wlw ships as.... very sanitized, which is not really the mood for these two.) There's also apparently a line in one of the novels that's along the lines of "If Ino were a man, Sakura would just marry her" so I think in any universe were Sakura knows about lesbians, this would be canon.

I also like this one a lot!!! Okay, here is why this is a gr9 ship. First, delete all your toxic assumptions about their Sasuke obsessions. They're both more interesting when he's not around. Next, imagine Karin, who has been taken advantage of and abused her entire life and come out a mean bitch for it as self-defense, but undoubtedly has a softer sweeter side. Now imagine Sakura, who spends a lot of energy repressing the ugly, violent parts of her because she's desperate the outwardly appear to be a perfect demure, stereotypical kunoichi. I think Karin is someone who could deal with Inner Sakura head on, and like Sakura for those parts of herself. Karin is someone who would enjoy brining out Sakura's gremlin side, and I love that for Sakura. Meanwhile, Sakura is just sweet/kind enough for Karin to be safe around, to relax and let down the bitchy facade. Basically

I haven't given this one a ton of thought. The aesthetic nice. I guess the duality of Hinata's shyness and Karin's louder personality could be fun, but I'm not convinced karin would be.... interested.... in anything Hinata has to offer. I'm also not sure Hinata would like someone like Karin?

Mai/Serenity

Also haven't thought much about this one! The only canon scene I can remember of them interacting is the one where they both pretend Mai is dead as a prank. Which was a lot cuter than that description made it sound LOL. So... it could be cute, I guess? I think it could be kind of a fun way to flesh out Shizuka/Serenity. Mai is pretty solidly a "strong female with a checkered past" type, and while the narrative and fandom largely treat "Shizuka/Serenity" as a sweet and innocent type, she's also had a lot of shit things happen to her (health problems from a young age, alcoholic dad, etc), so having a "darker" character like Mai unpack that could be fun.

KakaObi is such a jealousy-filled duo as well, but they love to take their time with you. Make sure you watch out for when they actually decide to work together, because you might not be able to make it out intact. Lots of jealousy lots of fighting, but in the end you are their number on priority.

i have this entire scenario created in my head wherein it was largely one-sided on ino's behalf and when ino was acting like she had a crush on sasuke or crying over him when the kill order was issued it was actually because of her latent feelings for sakura and struggling to identify with her in some way because it was the only way ino knew how to hold onto her. i also really like thinking of it that way because it potentially creates interesting parallels for ino with sai. both people deeply endeared to a close friend and it teetering on the edge of being romantic (ino > sakura and sai > naruto) only for someone else to already have a claim to their close friend's heart that is impossible to combat (sasuke). i like thinking of ino and sai being able to bond over that experience of being the person who is always there but never quite valued as much as they should be. it's very queer coded

'a starlit coda' is the SNS follow-up to my Merchants of the Dark Road board game inspired fic, 'you illuminate me'. It seems to be the fan favourite from this ask game hehe, I've said a bit about it in this answer here and shared the first sentence here but in this ask I want to talk about what inspired me to write in this board game world in the first place! (this got really long so I'm putting it under the cut)

Merchants of the Dark Road is a brilliant board game in general (pick-up-and-deliver with a rondel mechanic for all the fellow nerds out there) but what captured me about the game was for one, the lore. Like, a world where winter lasts thirteen weeks and merchants with caravans and magical companions have to deliver fantasy goods to towns with names like Nightpoem and Farglen via shortcuts or dark roads?? It's such a magical world, serious props to the designers and art team there.

Also the components are pretty damn magical too. Like, just look at the coins! (these are the metal coins you need to get separately but the cardboard coins are the same shape and design!) The dice are swirled with stars as pips, the goods tiles have gold foil on their 'upgraded' side, there's a magnetic market wheel that attaches to the board 😍😍 These are all extremely nerdy things but they made me feel so immersed while playing the game that I could so clearly imagine all these Naruto characters within it and I loved imagining the different roles they would have in this world (which is probably why I have so many spin-offs planned - this one and the InoSaku one plus the KakaObi 'do your paperwork'!).

I feel like the next time I play the board game is when I will actually (finally) write this little follow up and return to this magical world.

Also, the song that I listened to on repeat while writing 'you illuminate me' was Queen of the Night by Hey Violet and I think that shaped the whole vibe of the fic. That waltziness, the 'night' theme, the magical-ish sounds (I am very bad at describing music wow) - an orchestral version of this song is what I imagine is playing during the ball in that fic.

Wow this got long, sorry! At this point, I really have to actually write this 😅 (I feel like I've written more talking about the fic than I will in the fic itself! Just writing this ask response has made me want to start working on it... ahh so many WIPs so little time 😭)

Hello, I am just curious about two questions:

1. If you absolutely need to pair people up in Naruto like kishimoto did in chapter.700, who would you prefer with Sakura? Take myself for example, I am not opposed to Rock Lee with Sakura. In manga, they seem to have some chemistry similar to the anime version of Naruto and Sakura, and she was much nicer to him after being rescued by him.

2. Are there any chances for some future Uchiha kids in KH universe? I like Sarada but she sometimes seems more Sakura than Sasuke. I am so in for kids of Naruto and Sasuke. Black hair, blue eyes…definitely cute kids.

god, yeah, i think rock lee would be the only option I'd have for sakura- although inosaku is so damn pretty together, i just can't see them in canon unfortunately 😭. i really enjoyed the softer side of Sakura that lee brought out of her, and i enjoyed her character growth in regards to him.

as for Uchiha kids, I don't think Sasuke will ever try for biological kids. keep in mind, my brain is still in the mindset of where we left off of him- a few days away from turning 19 in the epilogue- so that might be clouding my judgement. he definitely isn't ready for it, and he'd have a hell of a basket case to unpack to be okay with it. i currently find it so much more likely that he and naruto adopt some orphan child in the woods completely on accident they just save the kid and a month later they realize the kid has been living with them every day and calls one of them "dad" on accident anf it's a whole revelation

@wlwsakura I had to do a triple take seeing my name 😵‍💫, I am flattered at the tag pass.

Three Ships:

-Edeleth (female Byleth Eisner and Edelgard Von Hresvelg, Fire Emblem: Three Houses) they stole my heart back in when the game dropped with everything about them when shipped together. (Being vague on purpose to avoid spoilers for the Crimson Rose/Black Eagles route for any who may want to experience it blind) In specific female Byleth getting some exclusive scenes with Edelgard, and how their story shifts with the added element of a female Byleth in connection to certain story points that are kind of not as poignant in other routes or ships really makes me ship it more compared to male Byleth and Edelgard.

-Supercorp (Kara Zor El/Kara Danvers/ Supergirl and Lena Luthor from 2015's Supergirl) I have spilled my guts about them a fair amount already. The wlw ship that helped me realize I was not as straight as I thought because of how fond I was of certain same sex friends. They were so couple coded, and it really stinks (older) supercorp shippers went through what they went through by the network, show runners, comic book anti woke mob, other Supergirl TV show fans, other lgbtqi+ aligned people, and homophobes for calling Lena and Kara what they were.

-I wanted to try showing variety for my ships into bl/mlm or hetero ships, but I got to end with InoSaku (Ino Yamanak and Sakura Haruno from Naruto).

I got so much going on with this ship on some different layers.

Way back when I was introduced to Naruto via the anime, I was not at all a fan of Sakura. Looking back I might have been best described as a "Sakura Hater", but having done some growing and having been reminded of Sakura as a female character in a shonen all this time later, I now have realized how unfair I was being to this fictional character for things well out of her control (Kishimoto's bad writing, how women characters are usually treated in shonen animes, served with a side helping of internalized misogyny on my part).

The realization at all the unnecessary hate at a fictional character who couldn't fight the tropes she was writen with made me re evaluate Sakura, and I realized she isn't so bad. No worse than any other Rookie 9.

Along side that re analysize I realized how gay-rivals-to-lovers coded Sakura and Ino are, and how much of a missed opportunity they were. So now they haunt me.

The thing is Sakura not wanting to be in Ino's shadow only started cause of her one sided rivalry over Sasuke. Ino originally didn't seem like she was going to compete over Sasuke with Sakura, she valued their friendship more. Yet Sakura hears a rumor and she completely turns on Ino, all the not wanting to be in Ino's shadow sounds like an excuse to act like a bitch if you ask me. Ino treated her as a friend and even encouraged her the was nothing preventing Sakura from improving herself without breaking off her friendship over a boy. I honestly feel Sakura was just running away she didn't have the confidence to beat Ino when it came to Sasuke and was too scared to face her head on as a friend. Sakura likely knew if Ino got Sasuke she could never accept and be happy for her friend.

Exactly like even in part 1 Ino's crush on Sasuke seems more her just going along with Sakura's rivalry as Ino did step back several times for Sakura when it came to Sasuke.

Yes HinaIno is much better then InoSaku. Even their children get along better, Boruto and Inojin became good friends while Sarada who apparently knew Boruto due to their parents knowing each other weren't that close even after starting the academy.

IMHO, a realistic inosaku would be one sided, although I do not longer see ino and sakura being lesbians, if we were to push it, ino would be the pursuer, while sakura is oblivious. But ultimately I would not see it ending well, I think ino would move on eventually, and I don't really know if sakura would find out or care too much that Ino had romantic feelings for her

They like inosaku for the same reasons most people do... because sakura is so embarrassing about sasuke that they need internalized homophobia to be the reason to excuse her behaviour 🥴 even though they have experience being harassed

Damn, I can see that. This is just so counterintuitive, I won't comment on their own experience, I am sure it must have been terrible and I empathize, but their takeaway from it surprises me.

Sakura and Ino have a way deeper bond than Ss? Granted SS has nothing going for it. But what deep bond between Ino and Sakura? I never saw anything positive about Sakura and Ino's relationship, at least, not from Sakura's side.

I mean Sakura poisoned her own daughter's mind regarding Ino. Even as a grown up. For real. What a petty woman.

Look at her arc regarding Ino, Kish put so much effort to keep her character unchanged. It's like he was really inspired to just not give her an inch if he could help it. I mean if these fans consider fillers to be canon, that's another matter.

I don't have a lot of respect for Ino's character either. But she isn't as bad. And she has some good moments. And she actually does care about her team mates. That's something I did like about her. She cared for Sakura as well. Which Sakura rejected like yesterday's milk and even after that, Ino came to her rescue in the forest of death arc.

Sakura is a crappy friend. And shipping her with anyone means one doesn't have a lot of respect for the other character. But maybe that's just my measure of ships. Ah, well, I can only be me.
