My friend who's newer to One Piece got to episode 200 when I was on 195, and I couldn't allow this, because I'M supposed to be ahead of people in a media we both enjoy! ME! Crow can vouch for that. So I spent my weekend watching One Piece and now I'm on episode 256
Spite is a powerful motivator
Spite and the urge to feel superior to people in relatively meaningless ways.
#I want to feel better than my friends#Is that so much to ask#I just want to be better than you#I'll never say anything to put you down#I just want to pretend I'm cooler than you#Only in my head

Have you also watched the One Piece anime? After watching the new live action I was like āoooh! I should check out the anime!ā But it is like 1000 episodes. Is it worth it?
Hi! I've watched a good chunk of the One Piece anime, yes! I watched up through at least the Arabasta arc, probably up through episode 150 or so, but at the time that was all that was released, so I had to switch to the manga. (I kind of fell out of One Piece for awhile after certain events in the manga hurt my heart too much to keep going for awhile, but I've always intended to go back. So I would say I've read somewhere just past half of the manga?) So, take that into consideration, that I'm coming from "started with the anime, got 150 episodes in, that's all the further the anime was along at the time, so I had to switch to the manga, but I fell out somewhere around chapter 500 or so, but that was long enough that I had plenty of time to compare the manga and the anime to each other, once the anime caught up to where I was in the manga". My ideal One Piece watching order is pretty much exactly what I went through: - Be prepared for the first ~20 episodes to be kind of dull, maybe you'll like them, but most people find them kind of tedious, but idk maybe you could skip the first 30 episodes or so because OPLA covers the events reasonably well - Watch up through the Arabasta arc (episode 150 or so), the pacing of the anime is really, really watchable up to that point and the voice actors are ASTOUNDINGLY perfect in their roles - Switch to the manga for the Jaya arc/Skypiea arc, unless you're having a really hard time with it, Skypiea should still be pretty good pacing (up to episode 195 or so) - SERIOUSLY GET OUT OF THE ANIME AROUND THIS POINT because it has to start stretching out the events to fill time because it catches up to the manga too quickly, so there's a TON of filler, like by the time I went to try to watch the events of the Davy Back Fight in the anime, it was EXCRUTIATING trying to slog through the long, looooooong minutes of characters just STARING at each other to fill time Is it worth it? Yes, yes, and yes. One Piece is genuinely my favorite manga ever, nothing has ever come close to how well done I've found it to be. It's not perfect, it definitely has trouble when it comes to women (though, I think Oda is at least trying to get better about that) and the art style isn't going to be for everyone, but the sheer WORLDBUILDING and PLOT are absolutely NUTS, Oda knew exactly where this story was heading when he started and you can see that dedication unfold as it goes along, things that you had no idea were important back then, that just seemed random, will suddenly be MASSIVELY important, like as an example: When Shanks tells the sea monster to GET LOST! after it chomps his arm, there's a whooshing, the camera in both the anime/manga and the live action make a point of how the air kind of 'shakes' around him, and it's super dramatic, right? THAT'S GOING TO BE IMPORTANT LATER and watching OPLA I was struck all over again HOLY SHIT ODA PLANNED THAT FROM THE BEGINNING. One Piece is a deeply silly and ridiculous series, not everything is meant to be taken seriously, sometimes it's just Oda joking around and being goofy! But there's a genuine story about friendships and a massively internally consistent world that will slowly unfold before you and some of the most epic battles I've ever seen. One Piece is a series that has made me genuinely cry over Luffy's hat more than once, it has made me cry over a ship, that's how powerfully the story can affect my emotions, because it's genuinely such a loveable series. Yeah, I absolutely do recommend it! Start with the anime, but for the love of all things holy, stop at least around episode 200 and switch to the manga, it's a tough adjustment for a few chapters, but it's totally worth it!!

Hi there! Your recent enthusiasm for One Piece convinced me to give it a shot again, after a very long time. I started with that new live-action one, which was very enjoyable! And now I'm thinking to move on to the anime.
The thing is, the last time I attempted to watch it (a decade or so ago), I became intimidated by the amount of episodes and stopped. And now there are so many more!
All that to ask, do you have any favorite arcs/episodes? Or, if not favorite, ones you consider very important to the enjoyment of the series?
No pressure to answer, naturally. And let me just say your excitement and enjoyment of the series has been fun to see second-hand. š
Aww, thank you so much for sending me this, it made my day! (Sorry it took me a bit to get back to you, it's been a long week.)
There are SO many episodes!! It's definitely intimidating. I gave it a brief try before the Live Action came out, wasn't sure I wanted to invest that time and gave up. But after watching and LOVING the Live Action, I've tried again and really enjoy it!
That being said, my method of getting through long TV shows is just multi-tasking. I watch the dub (It's good!) and am usually doing a craft while watching or sometimes scrolling through tumblr, etc.
Other than that method, I know there is a fan-made cut of the show that removes a lot of the filler/redundancy and shrinks the run time significantly called One Pace, that gets recommended a lot, but I haven't tried it personally.
It is a bit of a hard show to skip around, imo, because a lot of the fun of it is the characters and their interactions and how they grow, plus a lot of minor characters appear in one arc and pop-up again later.
BUT if you were to eliminate episodes, here are what I'd consider the most important arcs, though I'm no means an expert.
(Here is a link to the wiki with a guide to the episodes)
-There are roughly 100 episodes of filler you can definitely skip, though that doesn't get rid of that much.
-If you want to skip what the Live Action covered, you can start with episode 48 and the Loguetown arc (48-53).
-The next few arcs introduce some minor characters we see again, but the next major arc that introduces a new Strawhat member is the Drum Island arc (78-91).
-It's long, but I would definitely recommend watching the next arc, Alabasta to get to know several reoccurring characters and the next Strawhat (92-130).
-It also goes on a while but the Skypiea arc introduces some important lore of the show (153-195)
-It's filler, but I ADORED the G-8 arc (196-206). Just funny hi-jinks that didn't feel like filler at all
-There's a few arcs in between you could skip but DEFINITELY watch Water 7 (227-263) and Ennies Lobby (264-312). There are parts that go on a bit long, but this was my favorite part of the show that I've seen so far and I know Water 7 is the favorite arc of many fans of the show. It condenses a lot of the best elements of it and is so fun to watch
-Thriller Bark DOES introduce the 9th Straw Hat, you can watch those episodes (337 and 338) but after that, I would go forward to Sabaody Archipelago (385-405) because it introduces some major plot points and characters and I feel like the positives of the Thriller Bark arc are outweighed by the negatives, imo.
-Impel Down has a lot of fun characters, but could be skipped and you could move onto Marineford (457-489). Definitely watch that to understand the story moving forward
-Post War Arc (490-516) is good to watch for Luffy backstory and what all the characters were doing during the time skip
-It doesn't seem like Fishman Island (523-574) really impacts the plot as a whole? (Someone can correct me if I'm wrong) So I think you could skip it.
-Punk Hazard (579-625) is fun and does set up the next arc (Dressrosa) so I might recommend watching that
I am watching Dressrosa (~Around episode 665 iirc) now so I can't speak past that! If anyone else sees this post, feel free to weigh in!
Thank you again for your kind message! ^.^ (I like your Dungeon Meshi icon - That's next on my list after I get through One Piece!)

This is the Part Where You Run, 1.01
Hello! This is my new sideblog/project/series where I go episode-by-episode in each episode of Legacies that Josie Saltzman appears in and talk about her style choices.
Though there are many blogs out there focused on character style, my initial inspiration was @bettycooperoutfitwatchā so a huge shoutout and thank you to them!Ā
ShopYourTV was also hugely helpful, as itās where I found more info about the majority of the pieces that were able to be tracked down, so thanks to them! Iāll be sure to mention these shout-outs in a pinned post soon, but for now, this will have to do. Iām not super well-versed in fashion terminology and how to go about finding things, and learning is part of the fun of this series. I really appreciate having this resource!
Onto the analysis!
Being my favorite character, of course I tend to pay the most attention to Josieās style, but I also think thatās somewhat intentional within the show! While the other characters are by no means without their own sense of style or interesting outfits, Josie, in my humble opinion, often gets the most to talk about! Her style goes through quite a few changes each season, but there are staples and common motifs throughout! Sheās also one of the characters that represents the most common day-to-day trends. (Nevermind that technically, Legacies takes place a decade or so past our current timeline.)Ā
Letās get into it.
First Look
This is the most Buttoned Up (TM) weāll see Josie in this episode, so I guess itās apt itās during her first appearance, when sheās trying to make a good impression while she and Lizzie give Rafael the school tour.
She and Lizzie arenāt exactly matching, but theyāve certainly coordinated their white undershirts, blue blazers, and preppy-yet-stylish ties thatāhaātie together their uniforms.Ā
Iām pretty certain that the blazer is this cotton Ralph Lauren number, marked at $195. I donāt plan to detail the cost of every item in this series, because thatās not often something being considered that heavily in the costuming departments of teen dramas (#suspend your disbelief), but I think itās thematically relevant to mention here. Landon and Rafael are, of course, fairly shell-shocked by the news of a school for the Supernatural and one thatās forĀ ātroubled rich kidsā to boot. Lizzie and Josie being in their preppiest get-ups here adds to that conflict, but we also see hints of Josieās personality shining through as well. The ruffled collar of her shirt, for instance, will come back into play numerous times, as will various accessory components. While I canāt find the exact tie she swears here, based on her other accessories in season one, I feel confident itās from ASOS. Itās striped between a dark and light shade of blue, easily mistaken as plain navy if not looking closely, and adds to her charmingly over-accessorized look here. Her pearl-hook Angara earringsĀ (if Iām not mistaken, the original price is listed at $360) also add to the look. While I knew Kaylee Bryant had multiple piercings later on, I didnāt realize that was already true by 1.01! Along with her pearls, Josie also dons these yellow-gold bar earringsĀ ($98), signifying an edge and sense of contemporary trends that might not be visible at first glance.
Her hair is also pulled back in a half-up, half-down look that is sure to show off her earrings. Josieās being very purposeful in showing off what she perceives as the most sophisticated, polished version of herself.
Interestingly, though, whie it maintains a similar shape to the shape her outfit would have if she was wearing the Salvaotore School Skirt, sheās instead clad in what Iām pretty sure is this red zip-up J.Crew skirt. The bright red, while also a bolder choice than her school skirt, matches not only the S emblazoned on her jacket, but the tie Lizzie wears in the first shot, tying her to both the legacy (#pun intended) of the school and to her twin sister. (Note: Iām mostly going to focus on Josie for this series, but there are some relevant comparisons to be made. Lizzie opts for a pair of plaid pants during the day and while she doesnāt never wear skirts, she often seems to opt for pants and we see her in a fair few more jumpsuits than Josie as well. Skirts seem to be a little more Josieās thing than her sisterās.)
It looks like it might be hemmed, but itās also sitting fairly high on her. Weāll see high-waisted pieces that are a lot more visible on Josie later on.
I didnāt include a shot of them here because that way leads to blurriness, but sheās also wearing knee-high socks from ASOS (I canāt find the exact socks or the exact price, but I would guess anywhere from $6-17 based on current ASOS prices for similar products.)
While we donāt get a clear-enough shot of her shoes and I canāt seeem to find them anywhere, theyāre very clearly black loafers. While I canāt be certain, I think itās likely theyāre from Aldo, as that brand seems to be a favorite for Josieās shoes this season. Practical if a little stuffy, they go decently with the rest of her outfit, but donāt stick around as a staple of her wardrobe. I think the wardrobe department did really well showing us a lot about her character, but in the first few episodes, while everyoneās still getting a feel for the characters, thereās bound to be a few experimental picks that donāt get repeated. This was clearly one of them.
Look 1.5
Itās only when Josie approaches Alaric and Hopeās sparring session that we see the full blouse she wears underneath her blue blazer, a scoop-neck camisole visible underneath. Both her blouse and camisole are also tucked into her skirt, another common theme in Josieās style. (Also: lots of layers for what I imagine is late summer/early fall. Did the school year just start? If so, she totally got hot and took her jacket off. Queen of being relatable. <3.) While I donāt think itās the exact same top, itās reminiscent of this high-neck ruffled Neiman MarcusĀ blouse.Ā The shape, sleeves, and translucent lace paneling are all spot-on. Not to mention that this brand totally goes in her preppy-girl wheelhouse. However, Josieās ruffled sleeves seem to hang lower, the hem of her sleeve doesnāt go across her chest, and her neckline seems more ruffled. I couldnāt find the exact top she wears, but this was the best approximation. Thereās a LOT going on with it.
(Note: I have a love-hate relationship with this whole outfit. Itās so meticulously put-together and also has WAY too much going on, imho, while striking for a classic look. We love that for her, though. The whole vibe is that sheās... put-together and clearly has a good sense of style, but sheās also trying a little too hard? Makes a lot of sense for her character at this moment in time.)
Look 2
The perfect fit for jail-breaking a new acquaintance from the local werewolf transition space!Ā
The party at the Old Mill happens on the same school-day that Josie and Lizzie were giving Rafael his tour, but after dark. Which means she changed into this blue polo with a yellow collar and, of course, the matching yellow Salvatore Sābut she also pairs it with her blue-black plaidĀ school uniform skirt. For a party. What a dork. I love her. (Itās especially funny that she had to change out of her day-skirt and into the plaid to accomplish this. Makes me wonder if it was in the wash or something.)
It manages to still be preppy (it is a polo, after all), but thereās a light-heartedness and simplicity to it that isnāt there in her day-outfit. I wish I had the receipts, but I canāt find the polo anywhere (as every scene she wears it in is so dark), Iām pretty sure the uniform skirts were custom-made for the show, and there are no good shots of her shoes (though I imagine sheās still in the loafers from the day). Shame upon my household.
Even so, itās fun for me to take note that as much as she tries dress down a bit for the party (and wear less layers so she can get some of that sweet late summer breeeeze), sheās still wearing a nice shirt, her school uniform skirt, and her hair is still all done up from earlier. Thereās a slight awkwardness to her character at times that doesnāt come from how she talks or her facial expressions, but the way she carries herself and the way she often dresses just a shade too formal for where she actually is. (But would we expect anything less from one of Caroline Forbesā daughters?)
The next day, Josieās wearing this mustard-yellow Modcloth sweater. Itās a classic look and the Peter Pan collar will reappear quite a bit in season one (and the rest of the series, to an extent).Ā She wears it neatly tucked into her school skirt, black tights layered underneath (interesting - she didnāt wear tights with either of the previous dayās outfits), and I think weāre meant to assume that another day of classes has passed considering that itās dark out by the time of the meeting and sheās clearly dressed for a day of school.
Once again, sheās got the Salvatore S added onto her sweater, and the edge of the collar is scalloped and lined with black stitching. Itās really fine detail work that adds a lot of personality to whatās otherwise a very classic piece.
Though I think I subsonciously already knew this, I was surprised to be reminded that the collar actually goes all the way around to the back. My perception of most shirts that come with a collar attached (rather than shirts that are accessorized with one) is that they are an illusion and I was pleasantly surprised, as I think it extending all the way around adds a maturity and depth to the sweater that I quite like.
Josieās wearing different earrings from the day before, but unfortunately, theyāre not listed anywhere that I can find, nor was I was able to track them down via reversing the images. So description will have to do! They seem to be (maybe a somewhat muted?) yellow-gold tone in color, and I would bet theyāre plated with real gold. Highest on her right ear is a two-armed cuff that I donāt think is actually pierced, sitting several inches below it is a gold bar, right underneath that is a gold stud, and underneath that is a small gold hoopāpossibly accentuated with rhinestones, but itās difficult to tell. Itās unclear whether her other ear is similarly adorned because of lighting, angles, and the way her hair falls. Regardless, I love this look! I think focusing on the accessories on top and letting the sweater speak for itself here nails something that yesterdayās school tour look just didnāt. Thereās a lot going on with her ear accesories, but it all feels very her, and doesnāt distract from or confuse the other pieces.
Sleeves! Needless to say, they match her collar, though both are individually sewn to the sweater - thereās not a full undershirt sewn into it.Ā
I really love this sweater, can you tell?
Unfortunately, the sold-out page for the shoes Josieās wearing doesnāt show the prodcut, so Iām just linking to the Shop Your TV page. The chunky yellow platform heels she wears are a lot more stylish than her loafers from earlier, but theyāre still a somewhat sensible choice that tells us a lot about her character. Theyāre hard to see, but this is the best shot of them. The heel isnāt particularly tall, the platform is very wide and better to lean oneās weight on than, say, a stilletto, the toe is closed, and the strap around the ankle with a metallic buckle adds an extra bit of support. Theyāre fashionable and well-coordinated with her outfit, but still show her to be a more reserved, cautious person.
And there we have it! Thatās every outfit Josie wears in this first episode. Iāll definitely have more interesting things to say about her style as the show goes on, but I think this first episode does a great job of establishing her character.
Number of Outfits: I would say this is really just 3 outfits total, but the school tour outfit minus the blazer definitely stands out on its own, too.
Favorite Piece: Yellow Modcloth sweater all the way! I love the collar, the stitching, the color. Itās very quintessentially Josie, and what I imagine when I think of her in season one. Hereās her gif in reward! A Moment (TM) for Josie fashion.
Thanks for reading thus far! This is a passion project and definitely on the back-burner, so I donāt totally know when Iāll be uploading next, but Iām excited to continue it! If you have knowledge on any pieces that I couldnāt find the links for, please feel free to reach out and let me know! I would love to edit this post to be more complete, and I would happily give you credit. Bye for now!

Do you all remember Vice-Admiral Johnathan? Possibly the first ever āgoodā Vice-Admiral.
For a Marine, Vice-Admiral, husband and a chess-strategist heās kinda humorous too. Iām not just saying that because I actually like his character. Iām saying it because he may have a busy plate, he has the time on his hands to strategize the moves of Luffy and his crew.
Itās a shame heās supposedly non-canon and filler. Heās a really cool character. He has the wits and patience to go over a couple days to wait for the straw hats to come to him. Itās were the ābattle of witsā part comes into play. Which interests me more, why you ask? Itās because heās met Luffy already, and he knows that Luffyās isnāt the best priotizer. You can understand that by a glance at him, trust me.
Instead of commanding others to barge into his office to arrest Luffy he actually patiently asks Luffy his intentions on why heās at M-8. He knows forcing Luffy to tell him information will get nowhere and make it even more difficult to get the information he wants out of him. Itās even more cooler that heās the type of Vice-Admiral who doesnāt assume the impossible and goes on a rant about his own accusations. Unlike most Cammonders/Captains of the Marines in One Piece.
Also, at this time between the episodes of their arrival (195 - 196) Johnathan takes it slowly and smoothly. He starts to strategize on a chess board. Obviously, Luffyās the King, Sanji is the Brook, I assume Zoro is the Bishop, Nami is the Queen, Choppet is the Knight, while Robinās the Rook, Ussop is mostly a pawn. Now, I have no idea Zoro and down are actually it or not. I only know about Sanji and Luffy. Yet, he not only appearently knew most of the straw hats strengths throughout their shipās condition and disguises. He even knew that they would try to disguise themselves.
The first thing he said about them is, āpirates are always hungry.ā He meant hunger as in food, so he wanted the marines to focus on the mess hall. Metaphorically speaking, Ā«hungryĀ» can mean a few things for him. Power, treasure, obviously, food, fame, all those what men are usually hungry for. I assume that was also meant to play a part in the line.
Heās a fair analyzer too. If I have to guess, he likes to write down his thoughts. Heās a fisher too, he especially fishes at night. A particular time. It also improves patience and wits. The two things his character is obviously been shown to have great deal of. He even stated that he knew that he was leagueās ahead Luffy with wits. That was also after he met him.
You all know how Smoker was possibly the first ever introduction of a Marine that doesnāt seem inhumane? He actually treats people like people? He doesnāt get infuriated with every little mistake? He actually has a pretty soft and light-hearted scene with a kid?
Thatās how I feel about Johnathan. Heās humane towards his subordinates. Heās patient and knows how to deal with a mess-up and work around it. He knows humans arenāt perfect and will accept the best he can get. His humor helps this too, since heās always telling his lieutenant to basically become less uptight. He knows that everyone isnāt like him, and can deal with it. He prioritizes his health of his subordinates and makes sure they properly taken care of. Regardless, he doesnāt care how quickly his subordinates take care of the straw hats.
His humor? Iāve realized Iāve not gone into detail about it. Itās more of a dry type of humor that points out the obvious in nice ways. He tends to joke around the seriousness and starts to break it down through going through a good way to approach the problem. What Iām saying is, he makes sure that his subordinates arenāt overwhelmed. (Even though through the first half of this filler arc he left his subordinates under the impression that the Going Merry was at first a ghost ship) Althoigh, both the straw hats and Johnathan thought it go in their favor. So, Iām not surprised he let that happen. His humor is really the relief humor alongside with pointing out the obvious but in calming ways.
Heās also a people-pleaser. His wife, is the chef cook of the Marines in his front. In the filler there was two brothers who came over to basically show up his cooks who supposedly the better cooks are. He obviously was curious on their cooking. Yet, Sanji got there first, and as you know heās a 5-star chef. Yet, his wife cooked the food for him this time. He starts by softly telling his wife that he would prefer to try Sanjiās cooking because it started to spread around that his food was amazing. His wife goes and tells him that heās rather refuse the love and effort she put in his food, but thereās also a rude that youāre supposed to eat everything on your plate before seconds. Him, feeling guilty for making his wife mad starts just nervously eating her food. Then, finally he can try Sanjiās food. The food Sanji (unaware) made was meatballs. This is the scene where he meets Luffy for the first time. Yet, he pleases his wife by eating her food instead of demanding Sanjiās. He has the authority of it, but he knew his wife would be mad, heād feel guilty and Iām sure Sanjiās food wouldāve of tasted half as good as it did. Heās just that type of guy.
Seriously, heās not only interesting, but heās actually a good guy. Heās nice, charismatic, has a fresh character, smart, witty, and analytical. Like me, a people-pleaser. As I can tell, at least. He may have an intimidating look but heās more wholesome. He also treats his subordinates as if theyāre not questioning his authority and ability but comforts them.
His attitude towards them makes them respect him more. Notice how any Commanders who treat their subordinates like trash arenāt respected much, in comparison to those who do? Yeah, I believe Johnathan knows this. Not only knows this, but wants to make sure he seems friendly enough to earn the respect and trust of his subordinates. He also is authoring them too. He has that tone of comfort and friendly attitude but will not excuse the unqualified behavior. Like a teacher. Iām sure he knows this well; his attitude will reflect on his subordinates efforts and attitudes back. They all obviously respect him and treat him well too.
In this filler, weāre actually looking more into the Marines. I mean, yes, theyāre background characters but their characters too. The Marines in here actually have personalities and theyāre not acting like robots who just unwilling walk into battle without a thought. They have fears, questions, concerns, wits, doubts, humors, jokes, and smiles. Theyāre obviously comfortable in Johnathanās command. They donāt fear him, they only fear the straw hats. They all trust their Vince-Admiral. It shows us that he had a healthy relationship and reputation among his subordinates.
He seemingly had a Haki too. Which means he couldāve taken on Luffy and probably defeat him at the time. Yet, he didnāt. He decided to let him and his alleys go. He made a promise with them, but they couldnāt keep it. It was an unfair promise in their defense. Since he was a filler character thereās no traces of his character anywhere else expect these episodes. So, itās hard to remember such a character. Heās fresh and fun.
His character brings back some lighthearted vibes to the show. He what makes the filler arc so good and worth your watch. Heās the observant type. Heāll wait and watch his enemies with a smile and tigerās eye. He analyzes every movement they make and treats it as if theyāre playing a chess game. At least when heās calm and relaxed.
His type of self-formality is the relaxed but still on the job. He doesnāt usually wear his uniform completely and takes off his hat and coat. It implies that heās not just seeing his job as a job but a second home. He likes to be comfortable and tends to be care-free. His clothes and behavior shows that.
You also have to keep in mind the state of his mind. His maturity isnāt taken lightly, it shouldnāt. Itās one of those rare ālearn from the mistakes of the pastā maturities. He knows that making a good move takes time, patience, and good judgment of the people who heās against. Which is why he allows the straw hats to move as freely as they could.
Why he tried to trap them in the jailhouse. He tried setting them up by allowing them to go to it so easily. Without Sanjiās observation himself him and Luffy wouldāve, without a doubt been caught too. Or had to fight their way out and attract more attention. John knew he had that opportunity. Either way both Sanji and Luffy would end up being caught.
I like to imagine he puts himself through his enemies shoes before making a new move on them. Notice how he waits for new things before judging the next step? It implies that he knows how to play the game of wits. Making it almost impossible to beat him at it. He makes sure that his strategy and wits is at the top of their game before coming up with a plan.
He makes sure to keep the Marines on guard so when the unexpected happens theyāll be ready to take it on. He tries to come up with the best and most efficient way to make sure his subordinates are doing the best possible. He wonāt give them stuff that theyāre weak in; not for a serious situation. He might do it for training but he doesnāt care that much. Heās just grateful he has comprehensive subordinates.
I also like to talk about his introduction with Ussop. He lets Ussop go on his rant and denial of being caught. He allows him to try to act his way out of trouble without saying anything about it. It shows that he can already tell he is panicked and likes to wait it out. It shows that he preferably wants to keep up the banter of the straw hats assuming they can act their way out of the mess theyāre in. Even after his act fails and he gets caught again he never stopped smiling genuinely. Instead, he moved on anticipating.
Even after one of his moves ends up being the successful he never gets egotistical he still remains sharp and observant. Even though heās more easygoing than not, he knows how to slack off his job while being still analytical of the whole situation. Making sure that even while heās drifting off from duty he doesnāt waver the priority.
I also like to think he prioritizes his mentality too. Simply over him being overworked. He likes to take way more breaks than the usual boss. He also is pretty laid-back with his commands and how he wants his subordinates to do them. He doesnāt really think much of things when it comes down to detail. He tends to go over the surface level and start analyzing from that.
Notice how he never takes anything for granted either? I assume he knew after Luffy served him his food that was made by Sanji that he wasnāt resting from the supposed brothers. Yet, he still ate it without a problem and even called it āoutstanding.ā He will still eat and compliment the food regardless who made the food. I donāt know if itās coming from his wife constantly reminding him to take whatever he gets and donāt complain, but he never hated the thought of eating food made by a pirate.
I donāt think he hates pirates either. I think he judged based off action and intent. If the pirates donāt have all bad intentions heāll be less forceful to them and more easygoing. We can tell by this by the way he treats Ussop and Luffy. He never forces his authority down their throats and tries being friendly but stern with them. He simply would like to know their reasons why they went to G-8 of all places.
I donāt think no matter how many times heāll get āwe fell from the sky!ā Heāll always want to know more about the straw hats actual reasons as why theyāre pirates and their intentions for their actions. He likes to know how the people work before trying to force them to talk.
Hence his over friendliness towards them. He wants to keep them off guard as much as possible. He makes sure that he allows himself to seem friendly and not wanting to hurt them. Obviously, he has the plan to capture and interrogate them too. Yet, he wants to do it in the least frightening way possible.
Noticeable how the only of the straw hats he met are still teenagers, kids. I think he favors kids more than adults and will try to dim down his questions to a more less intense level for kids. Especially for someone like Luffy and Ussop. The two immature/kids (including chopper) in the straw hats.
His actions are dependent on yours. He knows most attics that are going to be usually used against or for him. So if most people try to fight their way out of his grip heāll be merciless. Heāll most likely have the upper hand too due to his Haki and youāre on his territory.
Heās also prepared of devil fruits. Considering the bars of his jailstails are made of sea prism stone. Since most āpopular/modernā pirates are devil fruit users. He makes sure to be prepared for just about anything. So he allows others to brave right in and waiting for them to spring the trap he set for them.
I also like when he knows how to call it quits. He knows when his bare and subordinates have seen enough action and need to break from it. He prioritizes his subordinates and bases own well-being over capturing the straw hats. He knows theyāre no ordinary foe so they canāt be taken lightly.
He may allow some casualties but he doesnāt let them overflow. He knows when to take the risk but also knows when to back off. In episode 201, he realizes that. His base has seen them crash through it and had many Marines get injured too.
He may be a great strategist and planner but since he never sees most of the action he has to assume the worst and hope the best. Unfortunately the worst for him usually happens.
It helps his favor that his subordinates do as they told no question. They not only do it, but they seem to have no problem with the ideas. They trust him enough to be able to let the planning and strategizing process to him and not question his judgment.
Instead of trying to capture them at wherever they may go. He then focuses on their goal of where to go. The dock 88, where the Going Merry is docked. He knows they all want to get out of there as fast as they can. While he still peruses them there. He tries to think ahead of them and make a move further than their current thinking.
He tries to stay one step ahead of his opponents. It what makes his strategies quite difficult to get across. Theyāre so effective because he allows his opponents to think they have the safer option than him. In reality, he traps them inside their own goals. Makes him a little manipulative.
Then, and then, oh I think this what makes him an even more beautiful character. He still keeps the bridge unguarded to allow the straw hats to pass, but he also has the lower part guarded. He wants to slow down the straw hats to get to dock 88 because itāll his lieutenant more time than them to get there.
He wants to make sure that he stays one step ahead of Luffy. He does that by not only harming his own plan of action but makes sure that plan succeeds. They all do, but they also all fall apart due to Luffyās unpredictabilities. Most because Sanji seems to be mostly on the same wavelength of him. Sanji seemingly knows what type of attack Johnathan goes for.
He decides to make the Marines watch. Something that heās good at. The repetitiveness of him being observing rather than attacking shows us how much heās willing to wait his enemy off. When it comes to patience he obviously has the advantage. Almost every straw hat are very impatient and impulsive when theyāre stressed. He knows theyāre stressed so heās using it to his benefit.
I also think he knew that most of the straw hats arenāt the boxing type or donāt have much physical strength. So he sent ā55 after them. He may be a little intimidated by them too, but he knew theyād be a match for the straw hats.
Did I mention now he wonāt fault his subordinates for his mistakes? He takes the blame no matter how dire it seems. He knows that they were only following orders and that they were his and heās the one who has to take the blame. Unlike most who just blame their incompetence on their efforts. Johnathan actually realistically believes in them. He knows that they canāt do the impossible and he wonāt blame them for it.
His wife, Jessica is just as determined with her job as he is. She isnāt as tactical or strategic as him but she knows how to command just as well as him. They both share the same brute power of a good leader. They obviously take after each other. Sheās uptight and forceful while heās easygoing and laid-back.
They both correlate each other they fill up for each otherās flaws. They complete each other. They also both know how to make their men proud of them. Theyāre just as proud as their men are of them.
His anticipation is off the charts, dude. He knew that the straw hats would go after their gold after they realize it gotten confiscated. From the beginning of this filler arc he had this plan ready to roll. He knew that they think that the big giant vault would be a great place to hide gold so he set up the straw hats to go there and get ambushed.
Plus, he knew that the map was stolen which makes his plan even more rock solid. He did it, boys, he finally won a round against the straw hats. He also makes sure that he allows that to sink into the straw hats minds because of how heavily and in heavily guarded the ambush was. He wants to subtly attack the minds of his enemies.
His perception IS AMAZING. He knows that most of his plans failed and he allows the straw hats to still take their gold but the line āeven if the baits gets stolen from the hook, thereās still more than one way to catch a fish. All fisherman needs to be is patient.ā He even still goes after the straw hats with the same amount of patience as he has before. He knows he can wait it out and still patiently watch the game go on, no matter how close the straw hats are to winning.
I love how much Johnathan compares the straw hats to fish. Their playing a game he patiently waits by to watch what happens next. Itās the sole thing of his planning, his analysis, his entire perception of them.
It all comes from fishing! He allows them to escape multiple times just to be caught up again and set themselves free. So after the first few times they escape he plans another set-up so it wonāt happen again. Just like a fisher would do after his fish has gotten away.
Heās a chess master, because of his anticipation skills. He can easily anticipate and adapt his strategy to the position of his enemy. He can treat the game as if he doesnāt care to win, but in reality heās analyzing your move and determining his to yours. An average chess player, but heās the master of it.
In conclusion; his character on the outside is pretty easygoing and carefree. In reality heās strategic, persuasive, charismatic, adaptable, intelligent, witty, patient, analytical, tactical, perceptive, thoughtful and anticipatory. All what really makes a Vice-Admiralās position something to respect but fear.
Heās also easy to please. Heāll be satisfied with what heās given with regardless if it meets his standards or expectations or not. Heās accepting and laid-back with his subordinates and will treat them like real people. He only asks for what they can give. Nothing more.
He tries to stay one step ahead of his enemies regardless how itās done. Itās mainly through trying to catch the fish on the hook with bait. His patience is his key attribute. He waits most things out before pursuing his enemy. He uses his anticipation skills to dictate which plan the straw hats are going to use next. He allows them to set it in gear before really pulling out his attack.
These is what makes his character stand out from the rest in my eyes. Heās more relaxed and humane than most Marines and tends to rage more breaks than actually work. Heās really good at prioritizing and multitasking. Heās due more credit than he gets.

Finished watching the Skypiea arc in One Piece (at episode 195), feels like I've barely put a dent in the show knowing there is so much more. I really liked the arc, there was so much fun world building and the past characters rounding the story towards the end (NOLAND AND KALGARA -weeps-). Also all of the questions I initially had being answered is just such a nice thing to see. It's crazy how OP has such good writing that I got excited when the question on the giant shadowy humanoids was finally relayed and it made so much sense.
I've been spoiled that this filler arc I'm onto next is very very good so I can't wait for it.
Also I think it is safe to say I have been fully converted into an One Piece fan, and I'm sorry to all my mutuals who don't give a damn about it. Apologies for what I have become.

Was talking to my partner who only watched to season 3 of One piece. Frankly, I think you could skip right to the beginning of the skypiea arc and you wouldn't miss that much. Nami's story was emotional, and I really enjoyed Chopper's story. On the other hand Zoro's story sucks ass, and the pacing is shit until they get enough people in the crew that they can finally move on with the bare minimum.
The set up was necessary to the story, for sure, but not all of it was executed very well and that really takes away from it. Have I mentioned that the pacing is shit? It was almost as painful as my chronic migraines, except people willing subject themselves to it.
That said, over all I actually liked the Alabasta Arc myself. Missing back stories aside, I think starting with they're journey over reverse mountain and when Vivi was introduced is the actual best place. When Vivi first appears the episodes are still extremely choppy, but nearly everyone introduced is still important to the upcoming arcs and after into the rest of the series. Choppers story is fantastic, really, and there are still new crew members to look forward to. The pacing really starts to smooth out further into the Alabasta arc. The stakes are higher and it really helps. And then we finally get hints to the over arcing plot (which also gives us robin!)
The segue into the Skypiea arc is done very nicely. The pacing really doesn't lag once the whole time. It's exciting. The plot is meaningful to every character we see, even the unnamed npcs, and the fights are exciting. Plus it is meaningful to Robin, who hasn't had the chance yet to fully meshed with the crew.
I'm really looking forward to the next 195 episodes!
