Another Top 20 Albums of 2022

“...And have I left anything out?” – Albums of 2021:

Jon Batiste – WE ARE: A HUUUUUUGGE apology to Chris on this one. He’d been telling me all year to check out this one, but I ignored’ due to my indifference to Modern Soul (the only album of this genre I have genuinely loved is ‘Of All the Things’ by Jazzanova). When I did finally listen to it, I really appreciated the elements of Jazz and Hip-Hop that would show up throughout the project. Stand outs for me are ‘WHATCHUTALKINBOUT’ and ‘SHOW ME THE WAY’. This would have made my honourable mentions...

Emma-Jean Thackray – Yellow: ‘Another recommendation from Dan. This Jazz project is yet another pointer as to how important the Jazz Re:freshed movement is and has been to the UK Jazz circuit. The arrangements on this album have me wanting to nod my head uncontrollably, chant along with the messages of self acknowledgement and speaking up for ourselves, or simply reflect and enjoy. The broken beat influence shows up on ‘Say Something’, ‘Third Eye’ and ‘Yellow’. This may have made the 13-8 range on last year’s list...

Kyoto Jazz Massive – Message From a New Dawn: After some 19 years and a barrage of solo projects, side projects and the like, the Japanese collective have reunited for a new collection of tracks. Vanessa Freeman also returns on vocal duties to convey messages of self-affirmation, proactivity and owning our s**t. Musically, the arrangements remain very similar to that first album, some being very monotonous in tone yet for the live instrumentation, to more bursts of energy through the various keys, synths and horns. My favourites are ‘Get Up’, ‘Get it Together’, ‘The Mask’ and the 10-11 minute ‘Revolution Evolution’. This may have knocked ‘Turbulence’ off of last year’s list...

Kiefer – When There’s Love Around: I heard the title track on one of Sherman’s instagram stories, which caused me to investigate. The music on ‘When There’s Love Around’ is very pleasant. While the energy plays mostly mellow, as a fan of keys, this album plays generally well for me. My highlights are ‘Areti’s Love’ and ‘Crybaby’...

Lord & Kaidi – Find Another Way: This was Matt Lord’s second project of 2021, teaming up this time with frequent 2000black collaborator Kaidi Tatham. ‘Find Another Way’ ventures from Broken Beat (with tracks like the optimistic title track and the bouncy closer ‘Strollin’’) into Deep House (with tracks like ‘ABC’, ‘Sensitive Souls’ and the more minimal ‘Full On’). As with most 2000black recordings, there are welcome beat changes aplenty to keep things interesting. It was only because there were other albums that I ultimately liked more that this hadn’t made last year’s honourable mentions...

Mndsgn. – Rare Pleasure: I found out about this album’s existence via an across the pond friend who had shared ‘Colors of the Sunset’ as the track on an instagram story post. Annoyed is an understatement as to how I felt that I missed out on this project!! While I haven't really been feeling his previous albums, Mndsgn. has some fantastic production credits under his belt. Much like Nick Hakim or Figmore, ‘Rare Pleasure’ leans more on the lo-fi, psychedelic side of Neo Soul; we get a lot of wavy guitar strums and dazzling keys throughout. There are also a couple of dramatic jazz breakdowns to change the mellow pace up a bit. This would have cracked the Top 3 of last year’s list easily! Shout out to Kristyn and only Kristyn for this one -_-...

Takuya Kuroda – Fly Moon, Die Soon: I hadn't properly checked for a Takuya Kuroda project since 2014′s ‘Rising Son’, an album that I only tend to return to for the closing tracks these days. The Corey King assisted opener ‘Fade’ is what sucked me into this album. Although ‘Fly Moon, Die Soon’ does a great job of leaning into 70s Jazz and West African musical influences, it’s the slower, more soulful moments that made me enjoy this so much. This album actually came out in 2020 but I wanted to shout this out somewhere...

Russ – Chomp 2: Despite having released many albums and mixtapes, as well as having quite a thriving career for a considerable amount of time, Russ wasn’t a name I’d taken note of until his feature on Logic’s ‘Therapy Music’ this year. A sequel to his ‘CHOMP’ EP, Russ continues with lengthy and well-delivered verses speaking on success, the value of self-belief and investing and enlisting featured verses from an array of this generation’s hip-hop greats. There’s a pretty solid selection of beats which I think will cater to older and younger hip-hop fans alike. I do feel that the “I pull women”/“They used to ignore me, now they’re on my...” lyrics are pretty boring at this point though...

On an incredibly pedantic note (and an age old rant that some of my older friends may remember and roll their eyes to), this album almost achieves not having a single 16-bar verse on the album (André 3000 & Rick Ross addressed this enough for me to not feel entirely crazy but still...). To this date, the only album I’ve heard pull this off is Lord Finesse’s ‘Return of the Funky Man’...

ROMderful – PLEASE RECONNECT CONTROLLER: My sister had played a couple of tracks in passing that stood out, but the thing that had me properly investigate is when one of my comrades in music, Shaniss, had used ‘FEELS SO GOOD TO SMILE’ from ‘ICE CREAM CLONES’ on one of her instagram stories. For me, ROMderful’s music is like that first cup of tea/hot chocolate/other loved food that hits the sweet spot. The melodies often tend to go for notes that are slightly less predictable by mainstream standards and never fail to pull me in.

‘PLEASE RECONNECT CONTROLLER’ utilises more keys over guitars (although they’re definitely still present) and stays mainly in the soulful r’n’b arena, save the alarming pulse that is ‘SIMULATION??’. Regarding the concept, this album follows the narrative of a new relationship (along with all the excitement and anxiety that can accompany it), that reveals itself to have been a situationship, concluding with first lament, ‘then acceptance. ‘PLEASE RECONNECT CONTROLLER’ may come off as sickly sweet for some, but for myself, I thoroughly enjoyed! This would have cracked my top five of last year’s list...

2022:

20) Kaidi Tatham – Don’t Rush the Process:

I’m pretty biased when it comes to a Kaidi Tatham release, as I’m always comparing his projects to ‘In Search of Hope’. That being said, the journey each album has taken me on can not be denied. There are some true gems in the title track, ‘Knocknee Donkey’, ‘Mystery Solved’ and ‘Sooretama’. I do feel a bit robbed with the criminally short length of this album though...

19) Ab-Soul – Herbert:

Six years after ‘Do what thou wilt.’ and having dealt with some extremely close losses, creative blocks, depression and even a suicide attempt, Ab-Soul returns with what could be argued is his most personal project to date...and it is most welcome. While there are more than the usual shades of vulnerability on ‘Herbert’, ‘Soul still delivers straight, honest hip-hop, full with catchy beat selections and punchlines galore, although the latter does come with quite a few forced puns and some ‘dad joke’ level wordplay. I found this’ a really enjoyable listen and given the quality, leaves me wondering if this could lead to ‘Longterm 3′ in the (relatively) near future...

18) Kwesi Yvorra – I’m About, Still.:

The Jazz re:freshed label brings us another quality release, this time with the sounds of drummer/producer Kwesi Yvorra. ‘I’m About, Still.’ gives us contemporary Jazz Fusion, with the influence of hip-hop that many of us have come to expect. Said influence even goes as far as to feature hip-hop stalwarts Greg B. & John Robinson on a couple of the tracks. My favourites are the quirky hip-hop tinged tracks ‘Copastetic Movements’ and ‘TKO’, the slow and slightly sensual ‘Give Go Scenario’ and the elevating closer ‘Noble Way’, which ends with a pretty solid drum solo...

17) Phony Ppl – Euphonyus:

Elbee Three and co. are back!!! ‘Euphonyus’ continues in the vein of Phony Ppl’s previous offering by featuring way more singing than rapping. The album leans very heavily into the r’n’b/pop arena with many of the tracks here. The subject matter tends to stay around the ups and downs of love and lust, although we do close with a bit of a throwback in the form of a “What if I was rich?” track. With both a Jojo and Megan Thee Stallion feature, could this be the album that has Phony Ppl crossover to mainstream success?...

16) Raveena Aurora – Asha’s Awakening:

A huge thanks to Tahn Solo for putting me on this one! While this is an introduction for me, 'Asha’s Awakening’ is Raveena’s sophomore album release. This project allowed me to venture into more of my pop and r’n’b tendencies with bouncy head shakers like ‘Magic’ and ‘Mystery’, along with smoother tracks like ‘Circuit Board’. The influence of Indian music on this project is pretty prominent too, heard in tracks like ‘Rush’, ‘Kismet’, ‘Asha’s Kiss’ and ‘Time Flies’. 'Asha’s Awakening’ is actually a concept album, following the character of Asha as she spends centuries training in exile from Earth on the planet of Santaan, in order to better temper her spirit. It is through this concept that Raveena is even further allowed to convey her reflections on society as well as sharing some personal vulnerabilities. The latter element is why the second half of the album plays a lot slower, leaning into Jazz and Neo Soul influences. We even close with a 13-plus minute guided meditation!...

15) Kendrick Lamar – Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers:

May of 2022 ushered in the MUCH AWAITED return of Kendrick Lamar. Five years on from ‘DAMN.’, Kendrick has (gone to therapy and) taken the time to explore his greatest vices and evils (see what I did there?), which includes his infidelity, homophobia, past trauma with both parents and (somehow) most importantly, the burden of being a hero, a saviour, a prophet and everything in between, given his status in hip-hop, regardless of who has perceived him to be such. Musically this album is far less accessible than ‘DAMN.’, due to the heavy subject matter in many of the tracks’ presented. For me, there’s a pretty big lull between the intense ‘We Cry Together’ and the ‘Saviour’ interlude, which makes it a bit more difficult for me to come back to this project very often. I do love the closing four tracks however (yes, even ‘Auntie Diaries’)...

14) Eric Roberson – Lessons:

‘The way I’m surprised that this ended up so high on the list!! This is another mention from Sherman that had me eventually check out ‘Lessons’. I had only really liked ‘Wind’ from the ‘Earth’, ‘Wind’ and ‘Fire’ EP series and I’d only gravitated to the Josh Milan produced ‘Hurry Up’ on ‘Hear From Here’. Furthermore, while I thought the lyrics were strong, I wasn’t really feeling the title track to this album. But every preceding track reminded me why I’d fallen in love with Erro’s music in the first place. He’s definitely still got it!!...

13) Soweto Kinch, Lee Reynolds & The London Symphony Orchestra – White Juju:

Born from an already strained relationship with the UK and only bolstered by a below-parr response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the fallout of ‘Brexit’ (-_-) and the racial unrest of not only ‘Brexit’, but the heightened protests of the ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement, ‘White Juju’ attempts to have Britain to hold a mirror to itself and take accountability for its past transgressions and current shortcomings. During the many distorted intervals, blunt saxophone notes and tumbling bass riffs are interspersed with soundbites of interviews and conversations/speeches in Parliament, aiming to be as uncomfortable as the soundbites themselves. What’s put ‘White Juju’ on this list ultimately is the dazzling strings and arrangements of ‘I. Dawn’, ‘VI. Sanctuary’ and ‘X. Clarity’, the jaded moments on ‘The Cycle of Violence’, ‘IX. Eternal’ and ‘Casting Out’ and the urgent bursts of horns, strings, drums and raps on ‘III. March of the Unicorns’ and ‘V. Curated Chaos’. Politically charged is an understatement!!...

12) Moonchild – Starfruit:

Moonchild return with their very welcome, bright and delicate brand of Neo-soul. Sparkling keys, twirling synths and feathery horn breaks a-plenty with their latest offering, ‘Starfruit’. This album takes the time to appreciate the monumental moves in music made by black women by featuring an array of well known (albeit not mainstream) artists, from Tank of Tank and the Bangas to Maimouna ‘Mumu Fresh’ Youssef by way of Alex Isley and Lalah Hathaway. Having not gone back to their previous album, ‘Little Ghost’ that often, ‘Starfruit’s’ melodies signify a return to form for myself...

11) Denzel Curry – Melt My Eyes See Your Future:

This album brought me into the spring quite comfortably. Having gone through therapy, Curry uses this project to reflect on how far he’s come as well as look within. It’s mainly the selection of jazzy instrumentals and absolute head bangers that has me return to this so often. I also really enjoy Curry’s more aggressive delivery on many of these verses. Favourites include ‘John Wayne’, ‘Melt Session #1′, ‘Walkin’’, ‘The Mental’ and ‘The Smell of Death’...

10) Kilo Kish – American Gurl:

Kilo Kish makes a huge departure from the more monotonous instrumentals and almost lackadaisical poetry/rap stylings, to venture into an electronic pop sound, fully equipped with electronic guitars, synths and slightly rock leaning drumming (and enabling me once more to revel in my more poppy tendencies). ‘American Gurl’ uses the metaphor of an arcade game to explore the many facets of living in the “land of the free” as a Black American Woman, giving us what I believe to be Kilo Kish’s most focused project to date!...

9) Black Folks Don’t Swim? – For The Source:

I learned of this band in the music sharing rooms I attended on clubhouse. The bass player and bandleader Sweet, shared a great amount of artists from DC including their own music. ‘For the Source’ mixes rock and funk influences to create a contemporary Jazz Fusion album of which the main theme throughout is JOY! My favourite is ‘The Midnight Theme’, on which the breakdown often has me thinking of the ‘Spring Hill Zone’ music from the first ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ game...

8) Deborah Jordan & K15 – HUMAN:

Producer/Multi-instrumentalist K15 was responsible for some of my favourite tracks on Deborah Jordan’s previous album ‘See in the Dark’. So what a pleasant surprise for me that they continued in that vein by producing an entire album together!! As expected from a Deborah Jordan project, the overall vibe of ‘HUMANS’ stay pretty low-key. We get a lot of piano/keys over slow drum beats, although the pace does change up from time to time to faster, busier kicks and snares, almost to remind us of their broken beat roots. The vocals and occasional beat changes keep the album sounding pretty fresh throughout...

7) Tank and the Bangas – Red Balloon:

Tank and the Bangas return with their third album and concluding concept in the ‘Balloon’ series (I thought there would be more but apparently Green and Red were as far as’ was intended...). There’s a lot less rapping on this project than its predecessor ‘Green Balloon’ (which I loved), allowing for more of Tank’s divine vocals, some funkier numbers and some soulful ballads. My favourites include ‘Oak Tree’, ‘Jellyfish’, ‘Where do we all go?’ and the grandiose ‘Stolen Fruit’...

6) Blue Lab Beats – Motherland Journey:

Blue Lab Beats really are just going from strength to strength. Having dropped a steady amount of releases despite a global pandemic, the dynamic duo give us the aptly titled ‘Motherland Journey’, going from their signature soulful hip-hop sound, equipped with synth solos, into a guitar-laden Afro Beat centrepiece and further on into deeper jazz cuts with energetic horns and sultry vocals. The ‘We Will Rise’ EP is also worth a listen (for fun, I blended the EP tracks into the album)...

5) J.I.D – The Forever Story:

Dynamic flows, introspective, relatable verses on family relationships, storytelling, brags, actual complete songs (I’m still not over this whole 2-minute, “you’re lucky if a track scratches 3 and a half minutes” trend!), great beats, great beat changes when needed. ‘Even further proof that there is still great, hip-hop being released amongst this current crop of emcees!!...

4) Saba – A Few Good Things:

...Yet somehow, this still ended up being my favourite hip-hop release of the year. Years on from the murder of his cousin and more so from the release of ‘The Bucket List’, Saba reflects on the good in his life, particularly his musical success. The trap and lo-fi elements (prevalent throughout Saba’s discography to be fair) only compliment the Pivot Gang’s production style. For me the album remains strong throughout, but it is the closing three tracks that stand out to me the most...

3) Sohan Wilson – Love is the Key:

A huge thanks to Simon Skofield of ‘Futuristica Music’ for sharing this on his Facebook page. Sohan Wilson gives us a sonic journey through the soul and jazz of the ‘70s and the electronic grooves of the ‘80s, telling the story of a growing romantic relationship. Unlike more of the love-based concept albums I’ve heard in recent years, ‘Love is the Key’ remains on the positive side of the relationship, speaking on how beautiful things became once they met and the value of letting past inhibitions go. The album has an optional ending, as it could end on the satisfying ‘Anthem for the Universe’, or the sharp, hard-hitting bonus track ‘RAGE’...

2) True Think – The New Resistance / Hold The Light:

I’ve often found Robert Mitchell at his best when playing in one of his collectives. ‘True Think’ hark back to the epic, almost elemental sounds of ‘Robert Mitchell’s Panacea’, even calling on Panacea vocalist Deborah Jordan to deliver many of the messages on this double album. ‘The New Resistance’ is another project that asks us in the UK to face our prejudices, while ‘Hold The Light’ asks us to hold on to our most positive values. If I were to choose an element that describes the dramatic instrumentals, spacious strings and sometimes grating synths we hear, I’d go with lightning...

P.S.: What a JOY to hear Ty’s voice once more!...

DOMi & JD BECK – NOT TiGHT:

This find was me reading liner notes yet again (’Can’t Punk Me’ by J.I.D) and then seeing the name on a festival billing. The best way for me to describe this album is the musical alternative route that Thundercat may have taken after his ‘Golden Age...’ release. A lot of the chords remain in the upper octave, emitting a light, optimistic feel. JD’s tight, rapid drum playing is impressive (although the tinny arrangement of them may not work for everybody) and DOMi only keeps up with her improvisations on the keys and synths. Even more impressive is that I don’t think they’re even over 19 years of age!! The music gives influences from the Jazz Giants of the West Coast (very specifically Thundercat), a hint of Weather Report and A LOT of ‘70s Herbie Hancock (+’Mr. Hands’). The inclusion of modern greats such as Anderson .Paak, Busta Rhymes and Mac DeMarco (not to mention Herbie and Thundercat themselves) keeps this feeling current...

...I may be biased as this is a release I heard right at the end of Summer; the winds of change that have come with this time for so long feel incredibly welcoming. This is the fourth year in a row that my #1 pick was first heard or released in September...

Honourable Mentions:

PJ Morton – Watch The Sun: I’m kinda hit and miss with PJ Morton’s studio music, but his live performances are always top notch and his last show was enough for me to listen to his latest offering. ‘Watch The Sun’ leans into lush string and uplifting melodies, taking the time to remind us that despite currently navigating a global pandemic, amongst other things, the Sun will shine again, literally and figuratively. My favourites are ‘My Peace’, ‘Please Don’t Walk Away’ & ‘Still Believe’, although the soul-singing cypher that is ‘The Better Benediction�� deserves props!...

DoomCannon – Resistance: This nearly made the main list. As the title suggests ‘Resistance’ also holds a mirror to the UK as the DoomCannon imagines a world where we have successfully moved on from prejudice and constant barriers being flagged up. My favourites are ‘Uncovering Truth’ and the stunning “struggle to optimism” suite ‘Amalgamation’...

Alex Isley & Jack Dine – Marigold: ‘More beautiful, slow, sultry, lo-fi Neo Soul from this duo. I think the vibe remained just a bit too samey for me. If I listened to this a a different time, in a slightly different mood, this may have made the main list...

Smino – Luv 4 Rent: ‘Another return to form for me as I wasn't really feeling ‘NØIR’. ‘Luv 4 Rent’ teeters between mellow hip-hop (with trap seasoning) to more upbeat funk numbers pretty smoothly. I may have just needed more time with this one. ‘No Ls’, ‘Pro Freak’, ‘Garden Lady’ and ‘Settle Down’ are my favourites...

tyroneissacstuart – S!CK: ‘The debut from dancer/actor/emcee/musician tyroneissacstuart. A lot of the pieces come off as free and chaotic as the physical movements Issac-Stuart can pull of when’ on a stage, which I believe to be intentional when closer listening to the subject matter; the weight of constantly having to perform for adulation is exhausting!!! There are some great moments with tracks like ‘Anderson’, ‘Pure Body’ and ‘Instaworthy’...

Steve Lacy – Gemini Rights: I found the music and subject matter on this LP tighter and more sure of itself than ‘Apollo XXI’. This may have been another one I just needed more time with. My favourites are ‘Helmet’, ‘Amber’ and ‘Give you the World’...

Lupe Fiasco – Drill Music in Zion: “Rappers die too much / ...that’s it, that’s the verse...” is a WORD! Having recorded the album over three days, Lupe returns with his esoteric brand of anecdotes and metaphors to deliver...a metaphor for the current state of mainstream hip-hop. The delivery of the verses are impressive as usual and at ten tracks, the album run time is succinct and doesn’t overstay it’s welcome...

Duckwrth – Chrome Bull: Duckwrth jumps into his electronic house bag on this EP, with great results!!! ‘Ce Soir’ and ‘Power Power’ don’t fail to get my head bouncing...

Robert Glasper – Black Radio III (Supreme Edition): I’m afraid to say I’ve found some of Robert Glasper’s more recent music a bit lacking. I wasn’t in love with this LP but the music on the standouts ‘In Tune’, ‘Why We Speak’, ‘Everybody Love’ and many of the additional tracks on the later released ‘Supreme Edition’ made this worth a shout...

Culross Close – Pressure: ‘K15′s jazz side-project. Many of the pieces stay as engaging as his work on ‘HUMANS’, but with more live instrumentation. ‘Misguided’, ‘Tipping Point’ and ‘The Will to Live (i, ii)’ are worth a listen...

March: Somehow this gifset of pre season testing was the post that got the notes (someone commented on it saying they were sick of seeing it and were blocking me, truly an icon, I wonder how they’re doing now) however my favourite post was George and Lando congratulating Lewis for winning the first race of the season

April: Lando trying to hold George’s hand but can’t cause of social distancing

May: The prettiest livery f1 ever did see (#bringitback) we also got the Lando workout gifset that I’m still not over

June: Gifs of Pierre from a video I couldn’t understand just because he looked pretty in it (Pierre was really killing it this month he is in 3 of my top ten posts)

July: Wholesome Dan and George content, personally I prefer the Lewis and Lando content but anyway moving on

August: Estewin, Estewin, Fernando celebrating Estewin

September: The Dando wholesome content EVERYONE loved to see, a few other faves of mine were Landos Pole and Lando, Jon and Char celebrating his Pole Position

October: We are on the 10th month of the year and we finally get content of Lando where he’s not being carried by someone else for notes, and in my opinion this is top 10 lando looks, we also got the best neck content and let’s not forget Lando getting his makeup done

November: lol I didn’t even realise this post had over 1K just Lando with his DR3 sticker, my personal faves from this month was smiley Lewis or sweaty Lando

December: My post with the most notes was Lewis being an absolute cutie pie and telling you to wake up, my gif with the most notes was Lewis looking like a whole snack after winning in Saudi Arabia, I would also like to give an honourable mention to Lando and his parents being the cutest after he got P3 in Abu Dhabi also sweaty Lando (part 2)

And the so close awards go to Lando Norris doing a shoey, Lando and Dan playing table tennis and lightning in Sochi if they were posted any other month the would have been the top post as they all made my top 10 of the year

My ranking of Jane Austen adaptations

Just my opinion, I don’t expect anyone else to feel the same

1. Pride and Prejudice (1995)

I know it’s cliche to put this one first, but I watched it when I was younger and it’s a real comfort to me. It’s also just great. Pretty much everyone is perfect, apart from some of the actors being too old for their parts. I will say one thing though, and this goes for all Pride and Prejudice adaptations: stop making the dad a nice guy! He’s an idiot who thinks he’s smarter than everyone

2. Persuasion (1995)

Persuasion in my favourite Austen book. I really enjoy that the main characters are older and have some life experience behind them. Even for the most fortunate of people, life damages you somehow. Anyhow, this is the best Persuasion adaptation so far (although there are a few on their way). It’s beautifully acted, and the romantic tension between the two leads is palpable. It captures the novel very well and the letter scene (oh my god THE LETTER) is perfect.

3. Emma (2009)

This adaptation is just so delightful. Romola Garai is so perfect in this role. It’s quite a kind Emma, a lot of the sharper edges are sanded off, but it’s lovely. I really enjoy Jonny Lee Miller in this too. In their big scene (after his speech) he does these big sighs before she reciprocates and I just love that. This is another comfort watch for me.

This is another one where I’m not a big fan of the father. I think he’s very emotionally manipulative.

4. Emma (2020)

Definitely a spikier Emma. I don’t love all of Anya Taylor-Joy’s performance, she can be a little too arch sometimes, but otherwise I think it’s perfectly cast (Miranda Hart as Miss Bates is a fucking genius move). I’ve really liked Johnny Flynn in other stuff, and boy can he pine (I loved the post-ball scenes). Oh actually one other thing I didn’t like about this was the depiction of Emma’s sister and her husband in this, why do they hate each other? But all in all, really enjoyable

5. Sense and Sensibility (1995)

I recently read the book and then watched the movie again. Although not a super close adaptation it does capture the feel of the book very well. Hugh Grant is perfectly cast in this movie, apart from being too good looking.

This is a book criticism, not a movie one (Alan Rickman is great), but I’ve always hated the Marianne/Brandon storyline. Apart from him being a lot older than her, the way he latched on to her because she reminds him of a long lost love is just kind of gross. Like, there’s a lot of projection there.

6. Northanger Abbey (2007)

I mean this movie is just fun! JJ Feild is lovely as is Felicity Jones. I don’t have much more to say about it, it’s just an enjoyable movie

7. Mansfield Park (1999)

I enjoy what the film maker was trying to do here (making a point about slavery etc). It’s not pulled off perfectly, but I do like it.

8. Persuasion (2007)

Ugh this movie. It’s not ‘good’, but I enjoy watching it. The casting is top notch, I really fucking like Sally Hawkins and Rupert Penry-Jones. They do a great job with SO MANY bad directing choices (so many). There are some good moments in this film, but it’s a badly made film. I still watch it though, because it’s fucking Persuasion.

9. Sense and Sensibility (2009)

Dan Stevens is too fucking confident to be Edward Ferrars. And again gross with the Marianne/Brandon thing. Apart from these things, this adaptation is fine, it has it’s faults but I’m not going to go nitpicking. The actors playing Elinor, Marianne and their mother are good.

10. Emma (1996 - Kate Beckinsale)

I haven’t seen this version for ages, but it’s fine. I love Mark Strong in many other things, but he is a weirdly shouty Knightley. Oh I do love the little factoid that the actor that plays Robert Martin in this (Alistair Petrie) is played by his onscreen son in Sex Education in the 2020 version (Connor Swindells).

11. Emma (1996 - Gwyneth Paltrow)

I just really hate GP in this sorry. And Toni Collette (who I usually love). It’s so simpering! It really puts off the rest of the movie for me.

12. Pride and Prejudice (2005)

I have tried to see why people really like this movie, I really have. I know people really love it. But I just. Don’t. Get. It. I think it’s badly cast (apart from Rosamund Pike, you are perfect), and I think it’s really obvious the director was a man. He makes some obvious director-y flourishes that really take me out of the story. Again I hate Mr Bennet being a good guy.

I do like Mrs Bennet being a little more sympathetic and the actor is good in this.

13. Mansfield Park (2007)

I mean this movie is just bad. I liked Hayley Atwell as Mary Crawford. That’s about it.

14. Persuasion (2022)

It’s just so bad. The character of Anne is completely changed, there’s no romantic tension, so many of the good lines are taken out, the wink-wink to camera tone of it is all off, the two leads have no chemistry. Persuasion is beautiful book filled with longing. This movie is just boring.

NEXT CHAPTER

Y/N was dressed in a baby pink and white tweed two piece, her almond white heel hitting the ground as she looked around the same halls she used to run as a child. Yet, this time everything seemed a bit more somber, the red of the walls seemed to almost swallow her in her own mind. Everything seemed a blur to her, from Dan showing up at the house with most of Mr. Forrest’s men to Sebastian being taken away. She wasn’t sure how long it had been, all she knew was that she had been moved around by Dan and several other associates from place to place until she had finally been placed in her old bedroom of her childhood home. However, the home no longer felt like home and as she waited outside Mr. Forrest’s office, fingers picking at the fabric of the very expensive skirt which for the first time seemed to fit her like a second skin.

The door opened and one of the maids gave her a kind smile before pulling the door completely open. She stood up on her heels, wondering what awaited her behind the threshold into the office of the man she had just discovered was her father. Not that it was a completely bad new, Mr. Forrest had never been anything other than kind to her but it was odd. It was odd that the father she always wished would be around during Father’s day, who would come to see her recitals had always been there but at the same time it wasn’t. He had always been in the crowd, unbeknownst to her and as she stepped inside his office and looked at the man she had seen ever since was little standing up, staring at her as if she would disappear at any minute, she wondered how she felt. Between Sebastian and being moved around like a lost package hadn’t given her enough time to even consider how she felt about her actual parentage. The young just turned heiress wasn’t sure how she felt about actually having one parent alive yet being somehow the reason as to why her mother wasn’t around anymore.

- I know you probably have several questions, Y/N. - his voice trembled, almost in fear of what his daughter had pent up inside of her. - If you allowed me, I would like to explain it to you what really happened.

- I guess. - her hands held the top of the chair, not sure if she should sit or not.

- I really loved your mother. I met her at the Opera, I swear I can still hear her voice in the quiet of the night ... I nicknamed her Robin, gave her the necklace you’re wearing. She loved you so much, she painted your nursery herself, spent hours and hours deciding on a name before finally sticking with Ella and would constantly read you her favourite books even before you were born. We were so ready to have you but after your mother I just, I just couldn’t let anything bad happen to you. I thought many times about placing you with some of my associates but then they put you in my arms and I saw your mother’s eyes on you, how tiny you were, I just couldn’t let you go. I do realise it was selfish of me and I know you probably will never forgive me for lying all these years but all I did was to protect you ... Not that it worked very well in the end.

Y/N just starred at the powerful man in front of her lay it all down. Maybe it was her curse to get powerful man at their most vulnerable yet Y/N just couldn’t be mad. She knew she should be mad, she should be mad that all this time she had a father, she had a completely different name in her mother’s eyes without even mentioning being in the shadow. Yet, she couldn’t be mad, when she looked at him all she saw was a man who had lost the woman he loved and the opportunity of having a daughter, or at least having her the way everyone ordinarily had one.

She sighed, a faint smile pulling at the corner of her lips as she walked closer to the old man, wrapping her arms around him. What use was it be mad? They had both lost something, something important and while Y/N had lost her mother, he had lost the woman he loved. As much love Y/N held for the mother she never knew, her father had lost the woman he had loved and the opportunity to have an ordinary lifestyle. She was in no place to be mad at someone who had lost so much.

- I forgive you. - she took a step back, her eyes slightly glancing to the little robin attached to the golden chain.

- We should get some dinner. I would love to show you some photos from when your mother was pregnant.

- I would love to but I’m afraid I have to check on someone. - Y/N wasn’t entirely sure if she should mention her relationship with Sebastian. She had mostly begged Daniel not to mention it and while Gwen had jetted off the moment she didn’t have to get married anymore, she was wise enough not to drop it on her newly found father that she was not only in a relationship with the man who was supposed to marry Gwen just a few weeks ago but also pregnant. Either way, she wanted to go check on Sebastian. No matter how much she asked, no one would tell her anything and her phone had been removed right when they both were rescued from Mr. Williams. - Maybe later on?

- Make sure you take Daniel with you. - Y/N nodded as one of the employees escorted her outside the study and back to the hallway where Dan was. She gave him a playful smile before walking up to whom she guessed she now had to call her step-brother, not that he hadn’t act like one since she was a little girl.

- Tweed? Starting to dress like an heiress, Y/N?

- One of the maids left it in my bedroom. - she twisted her foot slightly behind her, a bit of heat climbing up to his cheeks. - Mr. Forrest, I mean, my father said I need to take you if I wanna go somewhere.

- It’s okay, he only told me he was his father when I was 10. You get used to it eventually.

- How do you get used to suddenly becoming first in line to owning ... - she motioned around her. - All of this.

- I’m sure you can ask Sebastian for help. - his words made her stop on her tracks, a furrowed eyebrow at his statement before Daniel took a file from under his shirt. - I had my suspicions but after he was ready to sign off his place in the mob for you ... well, didn’t take long to puzzle it out.

- Did you tell anyone? - she grabbed the file away from him, not wanting anyone to hold it and mostly because she wished to destroy it or give it to Sebastian.

- I don’t think Gwen would be too interested in it considering she went on holiday with one of his bodyguards the moment she got told the wedding was off. Besides, if someone is to tell our father about it, it certainly won’t be me.

- I thought you hated Sebastian. I’m sure you called them standoffish and murderous.

- I still dislike him but ... you like him and considering you’re gonna be my boss someday, I don’t think I should really go against what you want.

Y/N merely chuckled at him as both of them got into the car and, following a bit of banter discussing if it was the best idea to go visit Sebastian or not, started to drive up to the Upper East Side. Sebastian hadn’t been taken to the hospital despite most of Y/N’s complaining, whenever she did all Dan would say ‘we don’t want the police in our business’ so all she could think about was if he was alright and recovering just fine. It wasn’t like someone would harm her if she made a call, however Dan and the other associates were firm on keeping Y/N as isolated as possible for the very first weeks.

Maybe it had been for the best, she had spent the two weeks feeling sick or very tired and weirdly enough, only a few days ago had she been able to get up without feeling like a goblin. However, she sure hoped he was alright and as his apartment because visible, her heart soared. It wasn’t like Sebastian had tried to contact her either, maybe he didn’t want to see her. After all, she was the reason he had three bullet holes in his body. As Dan parked in front of the building, her heart beat faster.

- I’ll wait for you here. - Dan took her off her mindset. - Be safe, okay?

- I will. - Y/N climbed off the car, scarily walking over to the door which was opened by the doorman with a smile on his face. She entered the very familiar lift, looking at the light buttons on the switch panel until the penthouse was reached. The doors opened horizontally and the once familiar house felt cold. Maybe it was because there just wasn’t so much staff running around. Actually, she could only spot a few bodyguards and overall staff before Amelia came strutting her way.

- Miss Y/N, I was so worried. When you didn’t come back with Mr. Sebastian. Thank god you’re alright, you look so good.

- Yeah, they’ve been moving me around for a few weeks. Do you reckon I could see Sebastian?

- He’s been in his room for a few weeks, doctor’s orders. I told him to go the hospital but the police rule. - she started to walk up the stairs with Y/N right behind her until she led her to Sebastian’s room. - You let me know if you need anything.

Y/N took a deep breathe, trying to shoo away all of the negative thoughts she had within her mind before pulling on the door handle, pushing the door open to see Sebastian laid down in bed surrounded by several papers, most likely contracts, with his glasses resting on the bridge of his nose. She leaned against the wood of the door lining, her eyes calmly set on his tense forehead as he went through each paper faster than a computer, writing what looked like unreadable calligraphy. He was the one to notice her first, taking his glasses off as a soft smile appeared on his face.

- Didn’t think your father would let you near me any time soon. - he spoke out, voice slightly raspy as if he hadn’t caught a wink of sleep in the past weeks. Y/N merely rolled her eyes at his statement, walking up to his bed and taking a seat in a spot free of papers. - Are you alright?

- I should be asking you that. - her hand creeped up to his, her fingers shyly touching his. - You should’ve gone to the hospital, Sebastian.

- Just bullet wounds, angel, nothing new.

- I thought I lost you, Sebastian. You didn’t try to reach out to me for two weeks, I was worried. - she bite down onto her lip, afraid her emotions would get the best of her. Sebastian noticed this, pushing the contracts away from his lap before his hands wrapped around her waist, pushing her closer to him despite the lingering pain of the gun shot wounds still present but he didn’t care.

- Angel, I thought you were gonna die and it was my fault. I promised nothing bad would happen to you and that ... that despicable rat had you chained to the ground .. the things he said he would do to you and if he had done it it would’ve been my fault.

- Sebastian, it’s not your fault. - her hand raised to caress his jaw. - You couldn’t have done anything, whatever he wanted ... it goes way past me and you.

- I allowed him to be near you and I let you be alone at the hotel ... I should’ve just ran off with you, I should’ve just ... I should’ve just told you I loved you when I had the shot, we could’ve jus ...

- It’s no good to live in the past, Seb. You’re okay, I’m okay, we’re fine. Whatever happened, let’s just forget it. - she took the documents from her purse handing it to him. - I thought you should have those. I don’t think it would be very safe for those papers to be wandering around. I can’t believe you would give it all up for me.

- I would do anything for you. - he leaned his head against her shoulder. - How is the baby?

- Baby’s fine, probably got tired of making me feel miserable all the time. - she made herself comfortable in his bed. - How do you feel about it? The baby, I mean.

- I would’ve rather heard about it in a less stressing situation but I just can’t really believe it. Somewhere in my life I must’ve done something good, I must’ve done something good because I really don’t deserve you much less a family with you.

- I don’t really think it’s about deserving, it’s just ... maybe fated considering I was supposed to marry you all along.

- That is a contract marriage I can’t really complain about.

- From now on, let it just be the two of us. Nothing else, no more Gwen, no more lost parents, just ... an ordinary family.

- I’d like that.

1. what are your top 3 favorite sets you’ve made

at first i thought nothing would really come to mind but going through my stuff it was actually hard to pick just 3!

this: relatively quite recent, but i love the idea i had for this set. wish i'd made the text for the middle gifs a bit bigger but overall i'm really happy with it + proud that i was able to remember those clips and actually find them. also dan and phil soulmates 💕

this: my dan and phil vs. disney characters gif series is something i'm proud of as a whole. i'm picking this specific set bc it was my most elaborate, it got really nice responses, and tangled is my favourite disney movie 😊

this: this is probably my number one, i'm incredibly fond of it. the year in question was 2015, which was the year i was really at my peak of being involved in the phandom and just loving dnp, and just looking at this gif set fills me with such warm feelings. like i posted this set in august of that year so nearly all those moments were literally from just the first half of 2015. i was going through a really hard time around then and dnp were my happiness, that's what comes to mind when i look at this set

ℛ - What are your top three favourite books, and why?

[ooc: For previously spending hours of each day pulled into the pages of a book, I feel particularly guilty for not having read anything in a few years. My favorite books all have deep nostalgic connections, holding them close to my wish to be less worried about the things happening in my life and being able to so simply escape into a book.

Ravenor / Eisenhorn by Dan Abnett Honestly, I cannot pick just one of this series. Both Ravenor and Eisenhorn have multiple books and a cross over that meld together in my mind as one glorious long story. I am unable to think of one specific moment in the books without opening the floodgates of memories. Dan Abnett's writing style keeps me glued and it is difficult for me to pull away. My RP partners can tell when I've read his work, as my responses and journal entries become significantly longer and use a grand array of vocabulary not common in my daily writing.

Prince Ombra by Roderick MacLeish The more recent prints of this book are abridged and create many plot holes, so if you're looking for a new "YA" book to read, look for the old copies (prior to 2003). This book was my go-to as a kid. The very first page makes me smile and the rest of the book breaks my heart and keeps me engaged with every turn. The main characters are disabled in a small coastal town and yet they are destined to save the world from ultimate evil. There is so much mythological reference, which also kept me excited to see what they would do next.

Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer Again, a series rather than just one book. I believe the second book is actually my favorite, but there are some very special memories connected to each of them. This book series is definitely meant for kids and young teens, and yet some of the content is very dark. I enjoy the rich child genius being a near villain on multiple occasions and being hit with his emotions on that while he watches what he does affect those around him. I honestly recommend this series to every 10-13 year old kid and re-recommend it to adults that need something different.

Cannot correctly verbalise your feelings without creating a minimum of 10 misunderstandings but once people are used to it it’s kinda endearing.

You usually wake up in a good mood and people can never fathom how or why.

You either stay up till 5am or you wake up at that time no in between.

A morning person bc you love the sunrise.

Change your lock-screen very regularly bc you get bored.

Happy sunshine but you have a LOT of mood swings like that shit comes out of nowhere.

Ep 12 Spoilers!!!

IM WRITING THIS WITH TEARS IN MY EYES oh my god I can't believe this drama is making me feel so many things. On to my favourite moments from this episode, in no particular order just what I remember from the top of my head:

1) The recount of what the soldier gang each did in their attempts to locate Seri is HILARIOUS. I really lost it at Gwangbeom getting agency scouting cards from SN/YJ/JYB HAHAHAHA EVEN THE CARD DESIGNS ARE SIMILAR ISTG THIS DRAMA

2) Junghyuk and Eundong playing that online game tgt without even realising is the cutest thing pls TOMATO CULTIVATOR?!AJZKAK Junghyuk really thought of that as his username aka the plant the love of his life gave him I'm yelling!!!

3) Seo Dan's mother's "good morning" and "oh my gosh" cracked me up, I really really love her random English outbursts.

4) Dan saying if Seungjun is lying about him being sick/cold he would get it but then proceeds to bringing food for him and that whole porridge scene between them ugh their dynamics really SNAPPED, I LOVE THIS PAIRING SO MUCH it's such a breath of fresh air that kdramas don't create unnecessary love square/triangle and just focus on developing both couples. I love it!

5) The drinking scene between our favourite riri couple...I had so much feels pls the fact that he told her STRAIGHT UP that he doesn't want to leave the south and that he wants to MARRY her, have CHILDREN THAT LOOKS LIKE HER AND THEN SAYING HE WANTS TWINS IM--- HOWDKKSKS I'VE BEEN GIVING MY ENTIRE LIFE AND NOW I'M FINALLY RECEIVING ;___;

6) I started tearing up when the ahjumma gang each brought something for Young Ae who is sort of in a house arrest now. And her asking them to leave before breaking down seeing all of them coming to help her?? Like, man, I didn't expect this scene to move me so much but it did and now I just want all of them to be happy please they deserve it :(((

7) THE REUNION SCENE OF OUR FAV BOYS AND SERI PLSSSSS when she asked Chi Su to just hug her and he did it while grumbling I think my heart just COMBUSTED with happiness. Finally. FINALLY!!! Also ps I laughed when Junghyuk got jealous of all of them hugging Seri for so long that he broke their hug apart lmaooo

8) The insurance guy getting what he deserves TT I actually was so touched when Seri was looking at the CCTV recordings and then reading the notes he left for her secretary to read like ahhh I know he did it for his work but when Seri said that he was just a stranger but looked tirelessly for her and was maybe two of the only ppl that wanted her to be alive...ugh my heart, my heart!!!

9) Seri's mom is despicable but... I don't exactly hate her? Like ugh she was so damn heartless to leave a child on the beach the entire cold, night...but honestly I'm just glad she's at least trying to redeem herself now even if Seri didn't believe her. I think what really got to me was when Seri apologised for being born into the world, for even breathing. How devastating can that be honestly? :( I just wanna hug her.

10) and then we get THAT birthday surprise scene (I sort of predicted it would happen bc no way they would leave so early...) but what I didn't expect is to start UGLY CRYING like literally my TEARS were just rolling down my cheeks at Seri completely breaking down bc she came home to an empty house and the thought of Junghyuk having left her was too much for her to bear. ON HER BIRTHDAY TOO! I was aboutta throw hands--

11) AND THEN THE LIGHTS CAME ON AND THEY ALL CAME OUT LOOKING GUILTY AF and I started laughing again bc Chi Su holding that penguin plush toy and then hitting Joo Meok with it bc he was the one that suggested they surprised her akzkaksk I LOVE MY SOLDIER BOYS OK

12) okay okay okay I know this is cliche af but I am fcking WEAK for back hugs. It's one of my favorite tropes and to see that happening in this episode...I have officially ascended into heaven.

13) how sweet is it that Junghyuk told Seri that every birthday of hers will be a good day bc it is a reminder that the woman he loves was born on that day, and is alive and well? Holy shit I cannot fathom how good this line is because it is a parallel to all that Seri said about apologising for being born and being alive bc she thought no one loved her?? But then you have Junghyuk who assured her that in this world HE will ALWAYS be grateful that she is part of the world AND is alive. How important is this scene for Seri who has always had suicidal thoughts? I cannot stress how much this scene moved me like I know I'm dramatic af rn but those are words she needed to hear and he gave them to her and I just--

I need to lie down and cry into my pillow now knowing there is no such perfect man like ri junghyuk that exists in real life

His voice breaks, he’s damn near tearing up, panic rising again—and he jumps when Anne cups his face.

“Hey, it’s—it’s all right, Eddie.” She’s making a valiant effort to smile. “Don’t get so worked up. I’m not gonna run screaming.”

“No?” He laughs and sniffs. “Damn. Starting to wonder what it’s gonna take, at this point.”

This is not Nonymos’s only entry on this list. In fact they may just be my favourite fanfic author of all time. Drawn into something is everything everything I want from a Venom sequel, emotional, kinky, romantic, and poly.

OTP: Fight Club by MorganOfTheFey (Detroit: Become Human, RK900/Gavin)

"One hundred. Ten X," Nines says, voice flat enough it almost doesn't sound like bragging. "I would have been decommissioned otherwise."

"Ohhhh. Aw, that's sad. Just," She tries to snap her fingers and gets distracted for a moment when she can't. "Jus'like that?"

"Yeah RK, that's so sad," Gavin echoes. "Can you play yourself despacito?"

His own phone blares the song barely a second later. Gavin drops a few f-bombs fumbling to get it out of his jacket pocket and turn it off. Then as soon as he puts it back in his pocket, it starts up again.

"Thank you for the suggestion, detective," RK900 says. "This is making me feel better."

The fourth part of this is still coming out, and it’s the highlight of my week when the new chapter drops.

Dreams of the Waking Man by Lex_Munroe (Marvel Comics, Wade/Cable, Daken/Bullseye, Wade & Hope)

All at once, it hurts. It hurts worse than the day Nate died (because Wade couldn’t accept it back then, insisted that Nate had managed to timeslide out, that the busted old telemetry circuit would only let him go forward and he was just lost for a little while).

He sits in the middle of the floor, ducks his head, cries.

She was smarter than he was—than he is. She’d known all along. Brave girl.

Timesliding doesn’t work right on Wade, never has, and their cobbled-together sliding module barely had power to take one stringy teenager for one jump.

She’d known she was leaving her parents, that she certainly wouldn’t see one of them again and quite possibly wouldn’t see the other.

Wade allows himself a moment more for grief and shame and humility. Then he clears his throat and wipes his eyes and gets back to work.

This may be the cleverest fic I’ve ever read. Crossovers, theoretical physics, and the best love story Marvel never wrote.

The Mountains Are The Same by bonehandledknife & Primarybufferpanel (Mad Max: Fury Road, Furiosa/Max, Furiosa/Ace, Everyone & Healthy Coping Mechanisms)

“'Real isn’t how you are made’” Gilly said with the air of a quote, of a Remembering, “'It’s a thing that happens to you.’”

Rotor closed his eyes in a long blink, “A thing that hurts, innit it right?”

“Sometimes,” Gilly agreed, squeezing his hand, “That’s life though, when you are Real. We all become it bit by bit. But it doesn’t happen if you’re not strong, if you’re not soft, if you’re not sturdy.”

“ But how can y'be all of those at once ?” he wheezed out. It’s getting hard to catch his breath.

“You are all that right now, aren’t you?” Gilly asked him with piercing eyes, “No one else of all these Boys has had the strength to ask for me. And I will Witness you as I have kept all those of my sisters who’ve fallen these past days.”

This series is not always easy, it doesn’t shy away from the hard or the dark or the painful, but it is always worth reading.

The Unspoken Truth by Nonymos (MCU, Clint/Loki)

Barton glared at him like he was trying to decide whether he was being mocked or not, but the next second, his shoulders slumped. Loki was familiar with the feeling – that dreadful feeling of discovering something repulsive in one's own nature.

And then, he waited. He waited for Barton to think and connect the dots, to realize that an obvious solution was standing just before him, to remember how he had felt when waking up tied down, or being forced to drink down the water. The demi-god just stood there, hoping – almost praying for the first time in his life – that his enemy would look up at him with something else than hatred in his eyes.

No one writes kink quite like Nonymos writes kink, and this series is the perfect encapsulation of that.

The Stone Gryphon by rthstewart (Narnia, primarily Gen)

"Tools!" Richard was so shocked he was near speechless. He sat down heavily on the bench and began writing frantically in that strange code. "You are saying that you have observed ordinary crows use tools? Peter, that is… remarkable."

"Well, I've seen Beavers use fishing tackle and sewing machines, so it didn't seem that unusual at the time."

I’m not going to lie, this may not be to everyone’s taste. But, amateur theologian, lover of weird animal facts, and history nerd that I am, there are very few fics more exactly tailored to my interests.

Republic of Heaven Community Radio by ErinPtah (WtNV x His Dark Materials, Cecil/Carlos)

The greeting catches both her and Carlos off-guard. It's not wrong to talk directly to another person's daemon, but it's still a little weird. "Likewise," she stammers.

They're both waiting for the obvious next step, which is for Cecil to introduce his daemon. The fact that Carlos hasn't spotted her yet is understandable — a big community gathering in a small space, you get plenty of daemons breaking away from their humans to socialize directly with each other. Any of the dozen animal shapes currently within ten feet of them could be Cecil's. If his daemon has an unusually high range, there are even more possibilities.

What Cecil says instead is, "If you ever have any important experimental-theology news that you need to share with the town, call me any time! Everyone listens to my show." There's a touch of what Carlos hopes is nothing more sinister than smugness when he adds, "Everyone."

He steps out of the way to let someone else interrogate Carlos, and vanishes into the crowd. Carlos doesn't get a chance to see what daemon he leaves with.

This may be the most carefully thought out crossover I’ve ever read, and I’m a little in awe of ErinPtah’s skills.

The Soul in the Machine by missdreawrites & Troodon (Dishonoured, Corvo/Outsider)

“... Outsider?” Corvo asked, sitting down on the filthy floor. “In the published list of the people who died of the Plague… how many were registered Augments?”

“Son of a bitch, ” Corvo swore with feeling. “This is… look at this waste. We aren't even people to them, are we?” He looked down at the body next to him. “And I killed the one person who could help. I did this. I doomed an entire people to plague, and murder and…”

The cyberpunk Dishonoured AU I desperately wish I’d thought of, because it works so very well.

In Which Tony Stark Builds Himself Some Friends (But His Family Was Assigned by Nick Fury) by scifigrl47 (MCU, Steve/Tony)

“Do you know what the difference between a villain and a super villain is, Stark?” Coulson said, leaning his palms on the tabletop, looming over everything like a very snappily dressed gargoyle.

“Style?” Tony asked, pointing both index fingers in Coulson's direction like the gunslinger that he was. He added a wide grin to the gesture, but Coulson didn't seem to notice.

“A villain has a giant mass of robotic vacuum cleaners that he can sic on his enemies. A super villain gives them the ability to fly.”

“In my defense, I do not actually remember installing repulsor technology in the Roombas,” Tony said, choosing his words carefully. It had been a working theory, sure, but he still wasn't quite sure when he implemented it. Maybe sometime on Tuesday night... That one was a blur. “It was a very long couple of days. So I was as surprised by that as everyone else.”

This doesn’t really count as a rec, since everyone in the fandom has read it already, but it really wouldn’t be fair to draw up a ‘best of the 2010s’ list and not include this.

A Great and Gruesome Height by mokuyoubi (Hannibal, Will/Hannibal)

Bedelia lashes out but Will is quicker. He grabs her wrist, pressing hard between the delicate bones with his thumb, until she makes a soft noise of distress and drops the fork.

Hannibal purses his lips and leans in close to her ear. “Now that is disappointing,” he whispers, and Bedelia has the good sense to be afraid with that mouth so near her skin. He inhales her scent deeply and straightens. “I thought you and I were beyond such petty jabs.”

“Were it not for the fact that you required medical attention, I have no doubt I would have met a similarly crass ending at the hands of your pet,” she says, lip curling in disgust.

Hannibal smiles serenely and says, “Will is a creature entirely of his own making. It is not to me to guide his hand. Merely to share in the sublime perfection of his vision, when he allows it.”

There are many dark!Will stories out there, and most of them are a lot of fun, but few are quite at believable as this one.

1. What is your all time Favorite twist? - The Twin Twist, if the twins don’t tell anyone (which is sadly always going to happen) it feels so tense like sumn about two people having to act like one person is just iconic to me!

2. What is a twist that you like, but kind of flopped? - The MVP twist, In my eyes this flopped like the season, I think if they made it so you could only be the MVP once then it would have worked better in season 15, but they also could have flipped it so that the evictee picks who goes up, that would have been iconic watching everyone asking who put up the 3rd nominee, but it was actually the person they sent out the door the week before

3. If you were the new Grodner and had to remake the show, what would you keep the same? - The art team, I don’t think they get enough credit, Sure sometimes it’s a bit meh, but the den of temptation was just *chef’s kiss*

4. What would you change? Casting, that is all i have to say about that.

5. What’s your all time favorite comp? Generic answer, but OTEV is actually so iconic to me, the strategies, the fights, It also gave me one of my favourite Janelle moments ever

6. What’s your all time favorite competition? - idk if i’m being a clown, but this is basically the same as question 5 sksksk

7. All time favorite punishment? - To me all the punishments are kinda dull, like i feel like the producers do it more for comedy on the shows to shy away from the actual problematic stuff that happens every season.

8. If you could bring any houseguest back to be in the house (not to play the game) who would it be and why? - So they just like sit around and observe from inside? If I’m allowed, I’d say miss tea queen Angela Clancy from BBAU12 cause she is some good TV.
