I also find it deeply ironic that some people continue to perpetuate the cocky jock stereotype about Travis, especially since professional athletes are some of the most insanely competitive and driven people on the planet, to say that an sports guy will never be willing to play second fiddle to Taylor....when thats exactly what he's done. And it's not even the same situation as Joe, where he's (for lack of a better word) in a fledgling career-- he's arguably the greatest of all time at his position in football history.

And he still seems to give 0 fucks when sportsbros call him 'Mr Swift' in national media. Just lots of food for thought on how we perceive men/masculinity/relationship dynamics, and attribute things to them that may be entirely opposite to who they actually are (I have a feeling TTPD is gonna be so revelatory in this regard).

There's so many interesting things to unpack here anon... first of all, thank you for sending this and engaging with my post! I think you're so right about the joever fallout and entry of travis being ample fodder for taylor to explore the dynamics of different presentations of masculinity (purely based on the emotive contrast between the two and the noticeable shifts in her comfort levels, at least from the outside looking in. it's going to be really interesting to see how that's explored on ttpd if at all and I actually wonder if this is what songs like my boy only breaks his favourite toys or the smallest man who ever lived are going to be about...

candidly travis (and jason) are perhaps the two most secure men in their healthy masculinity I've ever seen in the public eye and I think that's why everything works so well. there isn't one inch of travis threatened by Taylor's success or not appreciative of how much she means to people. instead he's happy to be her cheerleader because he knows she's his. there's technically not really any assigning of first or second fiddles? they're just equals, plain and simple. you win the superbowl? great i'll be there. you sell out international stadiums? brilliant! the early chapter made my whole day and I was listening to TTPD when it was posted (I want to learn all of the lyrics before my show but 31 songs!!! so I’ve been listening non stop) so when I saw the early chapter my first thought was obvi omg Maddie is pulling a Taylor Swift and surprise dropping a chapter!!!

your braver than me, I couldn't even listen to the whole album in one sitting. it's taken me like 3 days to go through one full listen, but honestly I think that's ended up being to my advantage because I've been able to process it really slowly and I actually feel like I like it more than I would have if I'd tried to do it all at once.

also Taylor is my forever inspiration so not only do I love a surprise drop but I do also add easter eggs to my ask answers sometimes. not anywhere near as calculated as hers though ahahah.

anyway, yes I do love the album!!! ngl when I saw it was a double album I got a little pissed off, because if there's one thing about Taylor its that she never knows when to shut the fuck up (lovingly). but I've ended up vibing with the whole thing. I said yesterday to my bestie that TTPD will never be my fave Taylor album, and then today on my second listen I had to shamefully admit that I think it's actually already my fave. or second fave, after 1989, cuz that album can never be topped.

and I tentatively have a few songs that will be added to the wygig playlist hehe.

just my food for thought: taylor's approach to promoting ttpd feels very much like big kpop releases (with the street pop-up, doing very limited promotions beforehand but dropping album versions with different names and even having photocards in her album and the album and lead single mv to drop on the same day ) and i understand that it also harks back on the generally short attention span people have with music these days, and saying that i miss her old rollouts doesn't mean she just has to bring them back because i want that, but i also would have loved a bit of a gradual build-up.

i honestly don't mind that the majority of people know who and what that album revolves around, since that is another thing i as one person can't change and i know that doesn't matter to me when i listen to the songs, but i honestly don't look forward to the fact that people will dig through the album for the most scathing lyrics, post them for viral moments, and then move on in a week or two bc then their attention will go to something else. this doesn't even feel like a real 'era' because the era is basically non-existent, which says something when taylor has marketed herself as the queen of album eras. i just wish she'd build on the theme of the album more, make it more of an era and work to make the songs just breathe for a while, you know?

while midnights wasn't my favourite album she ever did i genuinely really liked it (and same on the love for glitch!) for the way she wrote the album and the central theme of it being her contemplating her life, her actions, and her relationships - but all of that got lost in the wash like three months later and we never returned to looking at the album that way. you and the other anon were so spot on in saying that once it got the "heartbreak album" stamp (which ,,, it legit doesn't feel like a heartbreak album to me and still doesn't?), people never really came back to it or to listen to the songs and see anything else in them. i enjoy taylor's music and i like coming back to songs weeks, months, and even years later, as with any artist i listen to, and to see how i feel about them now. but it feels like that is never happening again bc the promo tells the majority of people one thing, they will listen to the album for two weeks except for two stand-out songs that become general faves, and then it's back to engaging with the commodity of the brand taylor swift, which to me feels like defeating the purpose of releasing an album aka a big body of work to stand on its own through time!

i don't know if that makes sense. in any case i love the discussions on your blog. feels like there is an entire different discussion about artists not being perfect humans, not even being likeable sometimes, and these people still releasing art that you as a listener (or watcher etc) will relate to and/or enjoy. i don't have a clear answer how to engage with that or how to look at that but the space and conversations on your blog have definitely made me keep thinking about it though it's something i have been pondering on for most of my adult life.

i just wish the promo for this album made it feel like she was actually excited and proud of the album because right now it doesn’t. she’s not doing anything for it, and if she is, it’s being outsourced to other companies who are the actual ones doing the work (spotify with the library or the lyric messages, or instagram doing the countdown) so it really comes off as like she doesn’t care to put the effort in herself leading up to it.

And the thing about everyone moving on like a week after, you’re so right. it’s obvious a universal issue, everyone’s attention span is getting shorter everyday, but with taylor and swifties… it’s so bad. every release is forgot even days afterwards and the fans ask for another one. fans are speculating that she’s gonna drop rep tv the same day ttpd comes out… like they’ve already anticipated that they’ll move on the same day after getting it so they want more. and i feel like, while it’s impossible for taylor to fix the global attention span issue, i feel like proper promotion would help combat it within the fandom. like her releasing a first single a month or two before the album comes out would build anticipation, but also force people to slow down. here’s a teaser but now you have to wait, teach the fans patience kind of thing.

and that last part made me tear up that’s so sweet to appreciate what i have to say. i’m so happy you enjoy following me. messages like this are the exact reason why i love to have my inbox open and have these amazing, mature, open minded conversations and it sucks im gonna have to close my inbox for a short while when the album comes out but i will definitely post my opinions once i spend some time with it! ily anon thank you 💗✨

yeahh, i think it evens out some of my favorites being the least listened/underrated songs (i.e. false god, i look in people’s windows…). previous skips of mine have evolved as i listen to them more but others have stayed. one i know skip every time though is it’s nice to have a friend. i really don’t like the melody and it hurts since the lyrics are so pretty

we match on skipping robin lol, but man i’m surprised about some of your skips. but totally understandable ngl, i know mine are a huge shock to some people. i’m curious to know if you have a no skips/low number of skips album of hers.. mine is definitely evermore.

No real surprises, Armin ended my #2 artist so I wasn’t far off there. I have almost exactly the same minutes listened as last year (73,984) which is quite cool and shows that my listening habits, in least in terms of how much I’ve played music, haven’t changed much.

* Spotify didn’t list the top genre on Wrapped this year. Why, when it has every year that I’ve got recorded (starting with 2017), I don’t know, but here we are. However, the Spotify Wrapped AI Playlist Maker, when asked to make a playlist of the genre I listened to most, put out Soundtrack as my top genre, so we’re going to go with that! I feel it fits this year. Really do wish we’d got our top genre officially though - like no, I don’t really care that my January was ‘Mallgoth Rock Out Metalcore’ or that my August was ‘Pumpkin Spice Strut Pop’.

Top songs

Felix Amica from the Saltburn soundtrack. I was fully expecting this to be my top song of the year - frankly, if it wasn't, that would've been a massive surprise. It reminds me of a trip to Manchester and a solo visit to the cinema to see the film, playing it on repeat as I walked back to the hotel through the streets of the Northern Quarter, dancing round my hotel room to the entire soundtrack as I got ready to see Maneskin. It's one of those pieces of music that just scratches my brain in the right way. I don't think I'll ever tire of it. Apparently, I listened to it 256 times, putting me in the top 0.001% of listeners worldwide!

Waiting Room by Pheobe Bridgers. Was expecting this in the top 100, kind of surprised it ended up number 2 though. But it's a song I listened to a lot this year, and although I'm not convinced it'll stay the distance for 2025, there's definitely a lot of memories attached to it.

The Diana Effect from The Crown Season 4 soundtrack. I was expecting this one in the top 5 and it delivered! I listened to a lot of soundtrack this year, and this is another one that I just fell in love with the first time I heard it, and then had it on repeat for ages.

The Alchemy by Taylor Swift. One of my favourite tracks from TTPD, and it's one that reminds me of this summer, the Euros and the Eras Tour and everything that went along with it.

Hotel Sayre from The Great Gatsby soundtrack. Entry no. 3 into the '2024: soundtrack domination', it's another one that I loved this year. Haven't watched The Great Gatsby in years (maybe not since I studied the book in school), but the soundtrack, or at least a couple of songs I particular, I do come back to.

Top Artists

Taylor Swift. She wasn't what I predicted, but I'm not surprised. 2024 was the year I went to the Eras Tour, finally seeing this artist I've been listening to since the original release of Fearless, live. It was an incredible experience with one of my best friends, and I'll treasure those memories forever. I listened to her for 8,466 minutes, putting me in the top 1% of listeners worldwide, and my longest listening streak was 31 days.

Armin van Buuren. He's what I predicted for my top artist, mostly because I listen to A State of Trance religiously each week (it defines my Fridays). He got the coveted top spot once, in 2017, and has been in and out of my top 5 artists every year since. Perhaps 2025 will be the year he's number one again!

Anthony Willis (composer of the Saltburn soundtrack). Felix Amica might have been my top song, but the entirety of the Saltburn soundtrack has made it onto my Wrapped. The lowest position is Spit Roast, landing at #91. The highest position after Felix Amica is Almost None at #6. Having an entire album in my Wrapped does feel like an achievement, I won't lie! Not sure I've ever managed that before - or will again.

Queen. Ah, another old favourite. Nothing will beat their absolute domination of my 2020 Spotify Wrapped, when I had 15,993 minutes of listening to just them, putting me in the top 0.005% of listeners, but I'm happy they've managed to keep a spot in the top 5 as I knew full well I hadn't listened to them as much this year!

Bring Me The Horizon. I was unsure who else would make it into the top five, but BMTH does feel like a good fit. Another artist I saw live this year, they're a band I've been listening to for over a decade at this point, a band that was one of the reasons I even got a tumblr in the first place.

And that was my Spotify Wrapped 2024! I don't know what 2025 will look like - maybe 75,000 minutes of listening time? Will Taylor Swift/Armin van Buuren/Queen remain constants in my top artists? Which song will I listen to obsessively on repeat? We'll have to wait and see!
