i have been THINKING about miss ginny lately especially since the new 76 update dropped, so heres a lil doodle my friend did of her!!! + her if she was a worm on a string, of course, and some in-game screenshots.
i am also using this as an opportunity to dump some lore under the cut :3 its a lot of words so prepare urself
ginny lore be upon ye:
Her full name is Virginia May Adler, but you can just call her Ginny. She's a 25ish (who's counting?) Appalachia native. Though she grew up in the Toxic Valley after she and her dad left the Vault, she now resides at her cozy camp in The Mire. She uses big guns, is covered in scars from all her forays into garbage dumps, and loves stuffed animals and Nuka-Cola Quantum more than most things.
Ginny is very bubbly and smiley. Human embodiment of :D. Sheâs the type of person that smiles at other people the very moment she sees them, just out of instinct. Seriously, sheâs smiled at more Blood Eagles than she can count, and not because she canât count very high. She can (INT 15 mf). Donât worry â despite his hatred for the Eagles, Beckett still thinks itâs sweet.
Yeah, yeah, sheâs dating her bartender. He moved right into her heart when he moved into her camp. Heâs for sure very awkward about what he wants (her) and skirts the subject every time she brings it up, but she knows good and well by the way he settled himself into her camp (and the sweet things he says to her cat Krypto when he thinks she isnât around) that heâs in this for the long haul. Plus, once they finally mow down the top-ranking Blood Eagles and save his brother from his otherwise-certain demise, he finally allows himself to open up to and fall for her.
She and Aries from Blue Ridge Caravan Company are inseparable. They met in Big Bend Tunnel. She and Beckett were hunting Blood Eagles, he was protecting his shipment from them. His dark, existential humor caught her attention immediately and, on the spot, he enlisted her into Blue Ridge.
Sheâs a scavver by trade, and a damn good one too. She picks up and stashes everything she sees, then determines its value only after she makes it home. Sheâs always excited and eager to buy, sell, and trade with anyone who asks, especially now that she's with Blue Ridge.
Since Beckett works the bar even when sheâs away, he always catches word of the best weapons caches, armor drops, and any other rumors of note that might interest her. Only after a firm but loving warning and a promise that sheâll return to him before the street lights come on will he give her what sheâs looking for. Oh, and the information too. WINK.
Sheâs also craaffttyyyyyy. She can make anything you could possibly need and more, just as long as she has some duct tape, a few loose screws, and a cartoon cloud of smoke.
She is terrified of heights. She also used to be terrified of animals, especially the ones with paws and claws as opposed to the ones with pincers, stingers, or poison glands. This changed after her dad came home with Krypto, her cat. She hated the thing at first, but when she lost her dad... Krypto was all she had left of him. Now, they can't live without each other.
She frankly does not care about radiation damage, diseases, mutations, etc at all. Itâs inevitable in the life of a scavver. Sheâs probably had tetanus more times than she can count, but itâs never been a match for a disease cure or some brahmin milk. Plus, she kinda thinks itâs cool.
She used to be a natural blonde, but all the exposure to all the [gestures widely] in the wasteland (primarily radiation, but no oneâs ever seen her in a gas mask or a hazmat suit â even in the ash heap region. The best she can do is pull her neck bandana over her nose when Beckett gives her his best sad eyes) eventually broke down all the melanin in her hair, leaving it white. Aside from all the junk that somehow always finds its way back in there, of course.
Beckett is the ONLY one thatâs allowed to call her Gin and she only allows it because heâs a bartender. He also loooooves screaming âWEST VIRGIIIIINNNNNNNNIIAAAAAâ to the tune of country roads (obviously) when he needs her attention and theyâre not in the same vicinity, hence him sometimes calling her West Virginia.
After her long scavving or traveling days, Ginny likes to sit in Beckettâs lap on their front porch while he takes her hair down out of the updo of the day and picks out all the sticks and leaves. If a leaf falls from the tree above them, even if he has every opportunity to catch it before it lands in her almost-clean hair and ruins his hard work, he wonât. He'll do anything to keep her there just a little longer.
OKAY THANKS FOR READING LOVE U BYE

heck yeaaahhhhh!! thank u for the tag @hrodvitnon !!!!
so yeah i've been listening to the signalis soundtrack on repeat for like two months.
in no particular order (maybe a bit):
-20. Eulenlieder. this is the song that plays in the EULR dorm. for some reason it makes me feel very emotional..i felt so bad for all the little eules (10 out of 12 bed posts) that populated the dorm with their singing, dancing and being silly in front of the mirror.
the christmas lights (sorry i don't know the name) make everything even sadder. the dorm stayed as it was before everything went horrible; it's like time stopped in there. i love little eules so much..they did nothing wrong. the eule alone in the third floor is so scared. almost no one is there for her anymore..
-47. Teeth. i love this song. it conveys the...desolation and hopelessness of the situation (ariane losing her teeth due to radiation poisoning. there's nothing she could have done, especially without being able to be cured.)
now, we don't know what dose she and elster may have absorbed in the penrose 512 when the reactor coolant started leaking, but from her notes, it seems like it was a slow as hell death. it may have been radiation sickness, but it definitely wasn't terribly acute, as they'd have died (at least for ariane. i don't know how much sensitive replika are to radiation, even if we know they are thanks to the medical reports; they're probably slightly more resistant compared to humans, as the "do not eat replika biocomponents" states that replika have an 830% odds of surviving compared to gestalts, but maybe that's due to other factors like not being able to get fractured) in a few weeks at most without treatment.
-48. Double Back (VHS version). this one is much better than the regular version. it plays when isa becomes goo (sorry isa.), so when you find the death tarot card. it truly matches the situation, where you find that...everything is actually not too real in there (actually from nowhere, where shit hits the fan and ariane fleshes everything), as isa and her sister were dead already (shown by the altar where you pick the card up).
actually this makes me think about...uh....isa was looking for her sister in s-23 sierpinski already. well shiver me timbers. elster is mentally ill (we love our mentally ill queen)
-10. Train Ride is definitely a big favorite of mine. (i cried to this song after finishing signalis for a week in a row) i don't know what is it about this song that is incredibly heartwrenching and nostalgic; that's also the first time you properly encounter ariane in-game if i'm not mistaken, and it...feels so magical. it is a calm moment between all the shit that is going down in s-23 sierpinski, and you're confused as hell because you don't know what a rotfront is. so that little moment you share with a person you see the first time, which you know it is important as she is shown in the title drop, feels...a bit familiar.
i wonder what imagery there is behind ariane dropping the gold key. all the other keys have an easy meaning to understand (water key in the flooded bathroom, air key in the vent, fire key in the incinerator, earth key (blank key) is stuck in a rock).
-46. Blockwart and all the fighting songs actually (incinerator, intensive care, mynah, riot control and im sure i'm forgetting another or two) . they are so hyping and they're a delight to listen to!
okay after rambling a lot (sorry) we come to the honorable mention: the Misery x CPR x Reese's Puffs which lived rent free in my mind for a week thanks to this video (warning: signalis spoilers). i got obsessed to the point of making a three channel version of the short version because i felt like its potential was wasted by mashing it up all together. (sorry can't upload wavs so you'll get the shitty mp3 version. unfortunately it is not 5.12 seconds long)
tagging! @some-creep, @limayde , @henry-writes , @comfycookie404 and whoever likes songs and would like to do this!
This was originally going to be a reblog of another post here, but it seems the original poster has since turned off reblogs. Still, I already had all this typed up and linked, and didn't want it to go to waste, so in a similar image, here's my top five songs/music tracks on the brain during the last fortnight:
Top five songs at the moment:
'Wolf in Sheep's Clothing' by Set It Off
'The Owl House' OST "For the Future" Main Title Theme
'Land of Confusion' by Hidden Citizens
'Godzilla: King of the Monsters' OST "A Mass Awakening"
The 'Final Space' OST which plays when the Lord Commander betrays Invictus (I'm no sure what the OST's name is)
A couple honourable mentions: 'Spirit of Chaos' by Aviators, and 'Monarch: Legacy of Monsters' OST "Homecoming."
Tagging if you want to take part: @lordofthefans @tosho89 @hrodvitnon @malarkay @princess-peregrine
#waaahh signalis has my brain gripped like a sniffer in a hand#SIGNALIS SPOILERS#forgor to tag this#signalis#rambling tag

Platonic yandere!Kaeya & child!gn!reader
Wordcount: 2195
A.N.: My first time writing platonic yanderes, hope you'll enjoy.
It's an impulsive decision for the most part - taking you, that is.
Kaeya trudges through the Wolfendom forest, a couple of his underlings, Addler and Otto, following behind as they trail a group of treasure hoarders. Criminal gang must have known that knights are on their tail, there's no other explanation for their sudden fleeing, leaving an already broken camp behind and taking only the most valuable possessions.
It's raining and he silently curses, even if this will give him advantage in battle, but archons, it's so cold. Huge droplets fall on the ground with a resounding sound, drenching everything and turning the forest landscape deep into nigh impassable terrain. Mud clings to their feet, slowing the group down, as the Sun starts to set. Sky turns all shades of purple and red, dimming light throwing the last rays over the Mondstadt as the darkness settles, yet Kaeya and his group still carry forward through the palisade of tall trees.
âSirâ, Otto carefully starts: âIt seems that criminals are already several miles away from usâ.
Kaeya nods for the knight to continue, already knowing that it will be an ask to stop - the weather is hellish and the rain is one of the heaviest Kaeya has ever had to experience.
âWith how strong this rainfall is, the gang's traces will be gone in under an hourâ
"All the more reasons to push on and catch them then", Alberich replies, paying zero attention to Adler's slight trembling or Otto's teeth chattering. The group continues on their path through descending darkness, their footsteps hasting despite the clinging and growing fatigue.
Suddenly, as the knights make their way around the cliff, a slight whimper is heard. It's human enough to stop the group - maybe some unlucky civilian got in the way of the gang, maybe criminals left their injured one. Kaeya just nods to the pair, as Otto and Adler unsheathe their weapons, wordlessly understanding the gesture.
Cavalry captain takes a step into the forest pit with a raised sword, all sight and ears, light blue vision on his belt shining and flickering both in caution and anticipation. He walks slowly and quietly, like a cat, careful not to step on the leaves and twigs lying around, and then he sees you.
You are a child, all thin and small in the way that the sick are. There are dark circles under your tired eyes, and the scrapes all over your body. You look already dead. He runs up to you, as he sees your figure swaying and knees buckling, saving you from the fall. Your skin burns Kaeya as he carries you back to the knights - it must be fever then. You blink at him several times, saying something, but your voice is too small and weak to make out anything among the droplets falling, and then you stop, eyes rolling back and head lolling to the side. You blacked out.
He thinks about handing your body to either of the knights and then continuing to run after the gang into the knight, but then decides against it - heavy rain must have blurred all the footsteps they left. Adler almost fails. You escape your delirium a couple of times, babbling words about forest and rain and wolves, and Kaeya, despite his focus on the trail ahead, can't help but listen to what you say. It's childish nonsense for the most part, an incomprehensible product of the feverish mind, yet sometimes you say meaningful things - I thought I would die, I got scared of wolf howls, The rain was so cold.
Some small part of him shrinks and aches at these words, a long buried hurt resurfacing once again. Kaeya frowns and huffs as he tries to get rid of the images of the days long gone in his mind - rainy night, hunger, pain, cold, he will die here. His lips quirk and a humorless laugh escapes him - the irony is painful.
He drops you off at the church, concerned Barbara taking you to the hospital and Kaeya, after a brief report to Jean, goes home, his mind still stuck on the memories of days long past. You will be fine, he tells himself, the church has good healers and the orphanage is nearby. Once you get better, youâll get sent there, where devoted nuns will raise to be another disciple.
You had a look of a deadman - a strange catatonic serenity was radiating off of you, as you looked at the captain with a glazed yet piercing eyes, both seeing him and through him. Itâs cold, so cold, yet no one is here. There are hot tears on his face, wet tracks burning his skin. His tummy is empty and aching, cold bites at his limbs, but Kaeya patiently waits for the adult to return. Father said that Kaeya was their last hope, so sure he would never leave him to die, right?
Cavalry captain barely sleeps through the night, memories and inner demons eating him from inside. When he does manage to doze off, a vague picture of darkening forests and howling winds wake him up, a fervent chanting buzzing in his head - Where is his father? Where is his father? Where is his father?.
Kaeya comes to you the next day, as his shift ends, legs heading to the towering church at the top on their own. Barbara leads him to your bed, your unconscious form lying limply. Idol explains your health issues to him - fever, malnutrition, inflammation, common cold and slight poisoning. The scratches you had yesterday were healed, Barbara says, but the rest of the problems can't be easily fixed with a bit of a hydro.
"Then, what medicines do they need?", Kaeya asks, understanding the unspoken words. The Church of Favonius, despite the large funding it receives from the city's treasury, still lacks a lot of resources and materials. People are free to come and get cured, without having a single mora to pay, which means that most of the remedies disappear at an alarming rate - be it some herbal balm for aching joints or a simple linen bandage.
The idol rustles in the hidden pockets of her dress, taking out a pencil and sheet of paper and begins to write, the list grows as Kaeyaâs eyebrows get higher and higher. There are dried Liyuen herbs, exotic Sumeru fruits, specially treated Snezhnayan and Fontaine tinctures and medicines.
Kaeya is taken aback for a second by the sheer length of the final list - most of the items will have to be ordered and shipped and despite his salary of the captain allowing such expenses, itâs still strange to spend so much mora - a complete stranger. Captain contemplates just leaving you there - nuns will take care of you, but the hurt resurfaces again and he sees another person lying on the small hospital bed - little him, scared and confused.
He ends up buying all the listed things, and despite his efforts not to, continues to regularly check up on you when he has time. Sometimes, Barbara says, you wake up from your slumber, enough to utter some confused noises and questions, but then you drowse off again, both sickness and medicine pulling you back to sleep.
Kaeya, to his displeasure, never catches you conscious in time, until he comes one evening, expecting to spend the time looking at you sleeping again only to see you half sitting on the bed. Your posture gets straight the second you notice him too, an expression of confusion and fear appearing on your face.
"Hello", Kaeya starts, slowly walking up towards you, keeping his posture small and voice as friendly as possible:"I am that knight who carried you here, remember?", he explains, seeing the further abashment on you face.
You nod at him, prompting him to continue:"So, I just decided to visit you to ask you how you got in the forest and why were you alone"
"Sister Barbara said that you came here almost everyday," you reply, voice absolutely flat and face having no expression. Kaeya looks at you briefly - itâs rare for children to speak in such a cold manner, you must have something on your mind then.
"Yes, I did" , he says in the same friendly tone.
"Just to know why I was in the forest?" , your voice betrays you, a hint of hurt seeping into it. Ah, thatâs why you asked.
"Hm, of course no! I also wanted to see you get better" , he smiles at the end, leaning a bit closer to you. You mull over his words, thinking of their sincerity, and then a later second you say, with much less caution and guard up:
"Well I am better now andâŠ" you get silent for a good minute:"I don't remember why I was there. I think it's because of the fever". Your voice becomes strangely controlled again - you lie to Kaeya, you didnât forget anything. A part of cavalry captain swells and purrs, recognizing himself in you,
"Do you want to live with me?". He asks instead of trying to get the truth out of you. Your eyes shine and a surprised noise comes out of your mouth at his suggestion - something between a squeak and high pitched yelp.
His apartment isn't the best place to bring the child in - there are far too many bottles and not enough food - Kaeya lives off the takeout from the Good hunter and the skewers he grills when missions call him to leave the city walls. Nonetheless, you donât look too disgusted with his living conditions, so he considers it a win, as he heads for the tiny kitchen to make you a soup.
It turns out a bit burnt in the end - Kaeya added too much wood to the stove, but you still gulp it down, not leaving anything and thank him for the meal. He makes a mental note to buy you a bed - right now youâre sleeping on a small couch, and clothes to change.
You are a quiet child, too fast to apologize for the smallest mistakes and wary of him when heâs in a foul mood - it gives Kaeya an idea why you were in the woods. Your days together flow slowly and steady with Kaeya falling into routine - he wakes up, makes a breakfast for the both of you, you eat it, as you shyly tell him about your newest interest or finding - a drawing, a strange bug, a shiny rock of unusual colour, then he leaves for work, instructing you to go to the neighbours if you have issues, and leaving a premade dinner for you. Then he comes back, now listening to you talking about your day - you were drawing again, or you played with the other kids, or you were running and catching the butterflies, the now dead insects left for him to look at.
Itâs a mundane life, something that Kaeya thought will never please him. There is a large pit inside of him - it was growing and festering with years - Khaenriâah, father, Diluc, Crepus, that fight. Itâs ugly and snarling and thoroughly scorched, a part of his soul that keeps him awake and anxious and angry and sad during bad nights. The pit quiets a bit when Kaeya takes care of you - toys, foods, games, the same way he wishes he was treated as a child.
Crepus Ragnvindr was a nice person, he took Kaeya in, clothed and fed and kept him safe for years, yet there was always an invisible line that separated Khaenri'ahn from Diluc - warmer voice, higher expectations, more praise. Kaeya doubts Crepus noticed this truly tiny gap in treatment, Diluc for sure didnât. Alberich did his best to ignore it, yet he couldnât, this difference nagged him at the back of his mind, alienating him in the newfound home.
That must be why he does his best to spoil you - it's new toys and furniture and evening walks around the Mondstadt with you on his shoulders. Soon, a new rumour starts to travel around Mondstadt - about a stray being picked up by another stray. Amber seemingly forgives him for the incident with Collei, Jean gives him a raise the same month, for child expenses, she succinctly says, Albedo off handedly mentions Klee and her desire for friendships, even Lisa gives him a couple of fairytale books, warning him what will happen if he will be late to return them beforehand. Diluc doesn't comment on the irony the next time they happen to meet, but he sees some Dawn Winery workers looking after you, when he is busy with Favonius stuff.
Kaeya, for the first time in years, feels truly happy. He has family again - you and him this time and he's willing to smother you with affections. He buys you things he wishes he had, and teaches you the skills he thinks will help you in life - how to fight, how to lie, how to kill someone with words alone.
It's a strange love he has for you - never seeing you as you - but it's genuine and all encompassing. Kaeya doesn't want little him to suffer again.

A sad smile crept across Torben's lips as she spoke as the look in his eyes shifted. It was not anger, nor rage, nor disgust. It was, for one of those times that were truly so few Torben could count them on one hand, genuine sadness. The acceptance of an inevitability, as it were, as he words only served to harden, like permafrost settling into the depths of a shallow river for the winter.
"I can't." Was how he began, the hand that she still clasped giving hers one last squeeze before he sought to disentangle his fingers from hers. "Pardons. Breadbaskets. Peace. They are things that belong to different men. Different women." The word was softened, just as his eyes did for that moment as he watched Faith. "They belong to you. But not me."
How could it be explained, what his goals were? What he strived for, without sounding like nothing more than a fool who would fly too close to the sun and all but surely be burnt, but his heart demanded he do it? Perhaps it was madness to dream of a world where any chains could be broken, let alone those of the people of Westfall. But it was a dream that Torben radiated from every single speck of his being.
"They are a lifeline, it is true. Their goals are noble. Commendable, even." Torben continued, his eyes once again seeking out the stars above/ Now why was that? Because he could not stand to meet the warmth of those steel eyes? "Let them be the lifeline while others like I cure the rot that poisons our society even now. For it is a poison. Of that there is no doubt. If it takes my all to administer the antidote, I will gladly do it. I would do it a thousand times if it meant freedom from the boot on their necks."
(Trimming post, continued RP with @westfall-faith)
"Why should I ask 'What would you even do', when it is far better to ask 'What do you want'? Look past the obstacles to it. Silence any doubts there may be. Look only to the horizon of your wildest dreams, and what is there?"
Torben raised a finger, not in a scolding manner, but only to stitch an addition onto his notion. "You need not tell me, or anyone, if it is too sacred to your heart. But to know it is all that matters. Strive for it, step by step, without worrying about what lies ahead. The helmsman of a ship only knows their destination, not what storms may be in their path until they are there. You are the helmsman of your life, and I'm certain you can endure whatever storms may gather."
What faith said about the Brotherhood being no better than the monsters beneath the bed rang so true it painted a grimace across Torben's lips. It was all true. The one who stepped into Vanessa's discarded boots was a man wholly unworthy of the position. A brute at best, he would lead the Defias down a path that will certainly spell doom.
But the Brotherhood was all that Torben knew. It was the very ship that he wished to sail to the shores of his own outlandish, wild dream. A dream of broken chains and liberation for those who had been enslaved for so long they didn't even feel the yoke around their neck anymore.
Torben felt her fingers brush against his own gloved hand, and gripped it snug enough to be reassuring. Humor crinkled the corners of his eyes at her words, mirth slipping into his words all over again. "Ahhhh what would they do if Torben Hackney lost yet another partner while out on assignment? There are any number of tales that I could weave, I'm very certain. You were captured. You perished when we were discovered. You were swept away in a twister." The very imagery of the last one only inspired all the more humor in him. "Perhaps not swept away, but the hat blown straight off your head and you went chasing after it. I'd look for you, to be sure. But Westfall is a big place after all."

Akai HonĆ
pairing: suna rintaro x gn!reader
wc: 3k+
genre: fluff, yokai au, slight reincarnation au
tags/warnings: kitsune!suna, healer!reader, minor violence, mentions of blood/injuries
summary: an injured fox in the snow, a lonely healer in the woods â an unlikely connection to transcend lifetimes
â§ïœ„ïŸ: *â§ïœ„ïŸ:* ăă *:ïŸâ§*:ïŸâ§
You first encounter Suna Rintarou lying under a blanket of snow â his blue lips and pale skin even more juxtaposed against the bright red stain encircling the white ground beneath his chest.
Your basket laid toppled onto its side and forgotten, the herbs youâve collected spilled and dropped in your haste to aid the injured man.
At first glance, he looked frozen. His black and white yukata had been steeped in dark crimson liquid that had leaked from the tear below his right breast. His dark brown hair matted onto his forehead, and his eyes remained squeezed shut as his body lay prone on the ground.
You ripped the bandana you had wrapped around your head off in one quick motion, immediately applying pressure to the bleeding wound. With one hand keeping the cloth in place, you use your other hand to gently ease his head onto your lap, and it was then you finally noticed.
A twitch of his ear as you repositioned his body. A tail matching the hue of his blood-caked locks hanging limp in the wet snow as you tried to stand him up.
A part of you hesitated, hands stilling as they attempted to support the body of the yokai.
But a bigger part of you knows that none of that matters when a manâs life is withering away before you.
And so without another thought, you urge yourself to move on, guided forward by the swirling winds of winter.
â§ïœ„ïŸ: *â§ïœ„ïŸ:* ăă *:ïŸâ§*:ïŸâ§
When Suna Rintarou awakens, the first thing he feels is a weight resting on the side of his leg. His thoughts attempt to roll in through the fog of his brain, but as soon as he lifts his head, it begins to pound him back into his pillow.
His eyes blink into focus an unfamiliar setting -- four wooden walls lined by shelves stocked with scrolls and books, a wooden desk with a mortar and pestle, herbs littered across the table haphazardly, and the scent of something astringent burning the inside of his nostrils. Once more, Suna tries to gather his bearings, and an attempt at moving his arms leads to the discovery of the bandages that covered his torso.
A searing pain shoots through his side, and a hiss escapes from his lips. At this, the weight beside him stirs and it was then he finally notices.
He scrambles out of the bed in a frenzied panic, though the weakness from his injury only allows him to clumsily crawl onto the floor. Your head shoots up like lightning, alarmed by the racket the incapacited kitsune was making in your home.
Your chair falls onto its back in your rush to stand, and Suna wills with all his might for his body to jump out the window. But the way his knees buckle beneath his weight, and his arm feels as if itâs been dipped into fire, he knows this feat would be impossible.
And so he resorts to scurrying into the corner, the pupils of his eyes narrowing into a slit against the human who now approached him.
âStay away from me,â he hisses, swatting his claws half-heartedly at you.
You looked down at him with your hands raised and face scrunched with concern.âHey, quit moving around or else youâll ââ
Suna groans as his hand grabs at his side. The kitsune collapses on his bottom as he clutches himself in his arms, pulling his hand away only for it to be stained red.
You click your tongue at him. âYouâve gone and opened the wound,â you sighed, slowly crouching down to his level. You get on your hands on your knees as you gingerly crawl towards Suna.
The gentleness of your movements, however, do nothing to deter the yokaiâs wariness, and he inches himself closer to the wall.
âDonât touch me, human,â he croaks out, voice cracked and hoarse, holding a hand out to keep you at bay, âWhat do you want from me?â
You sigh, sitting back on your heels and crossing your arms. You let out a frustrated huff, closing your eyes as you pinched the bridge of your nose, and it was then when the image of Sunaâs crumpled body flashes in your head.
âI want you to quit bleeding all over my floor,â you groaned, but the harshness of your words did not match the softness in your eyes. Suna continues to glare, wincing as he pulls his knees up to his chest.
âLeave me alone! Iâve already told your kind that I was just passing through.â
He says the words with anger and frustration, but the narrowing of his glare holds fear and confusion. Your eyes glisten at how his fingers trembled against the bandages that were now soiled.
âDid humans do this to you?â You ask.
He refused to answer, but he didnât have to. You knew the surrounding areas of your village all too well. A sickening fear against the unknown has grown deep roots in the hearts of your fellow neighbors that no amount of Kampo herbs could cure. It was no place for wandering yokai.
You breathe in through your nose, and out through your mouth. Your arm reaches out to him.
âYouâre safe,â you beckon, lowering your voice to nothing but a gentle whisper. âI promise no harm will come to you while you are here.â
Suna stares at your hand with his nose upturned, and lips twisted into scowl. He watches as the human continues to crawl on all fours towards him, and he weighs out his options.
His wound begins to drip on the floor, his eyes start to feel heavy, and the weakness in his legs have forced him to come to only one conclusion.
Without a word, he places his hand into yours
â§ïœ„ïŸ: *â§ïœ„ïŸ:* ăă *:ïŸâ§*:ïŸâ§
Soft grunting and shallow breathing is what has woken you up from your light slumber.
The kitsune was tossing and turning in his sleep, his surprisingly delicate features now covered in a sheen of cold sweat. With his gritted teeth and eyes clenched tightly, you were sure you didnât want to know of the nightmares that haunted his rest.
You swiftly run and grab a clean towel, soaking it in cold water and squeezing the excess droplets back into the water bowl before kneeling beside Sunaâs bed.
The heat from his body could be felt through the layers of blankets you had placed on top of him, and your heart ached at Sunaâs face twisted with pain
Slowly, you place the damp cloth across his burning forehead â but as soon as cloth makes contact with skin, Sunaâs eyes shoot open, angry red veins outlining the whites of eyes warped with confusion and anger.
His nails dig deep along the expanse of your wrist as he automatically swipes his claws abruptly in any direction, and you fall on your back as Suna sits up â chest heaving with each frightened breath.
He blinked once. Then twice.
His pupils dilate from their sinister slit into orbs of uncertainty and fear as he processes the streaks of red travelling down your arms. He grips the edge of his sheets, gulping the dryness down his throat.
An apology sat at the tip of his tongue, but his curiosity at seeing you slowly lift yourself up from the wooden floor had rendered him silent. You had said nothing as you held your wrist in your hand, bending over to pick up the small towel that lay forgotten on the ground.
You had saturated it once more, before laying it across Sunaâs forehead as you pushed him back down onto his pillow.
âGet some rest,â You mumbled, before padding back into the kitchen.
Suna could still feel his heart running marathons around in his chest, beating into him for the first time in his life a guilt for spilling the blood of a human. What was to happen to him now?
You return a few moments later with a bandaged arm, and a cup of something steaming.
âDrink this,â you ordered, but Suna was hesitant to take it. You gesture the cup to him once more, âItâs not poisoned. It will help you sleep.â
Suna takes your offering. You donât wait for him to drink it before turning around to leave.
The steam that wafted from the mug had smelled of peppermint and chamomile. Suna sips the warm liquid, and he notes a hint of lavender.
Sleep came to him like an old friend.
â§ïœ„ïŸ: *â§ïœ„ïŸ:* ăă *:ïŸâ§*:ïŸâ§
It was two weeks later when you realized, Suna had stopped scowling in your direction. He sits up from his bed and watches with curiosity behind his wary gaze as you throw seemingly random herbs into your mortar before grinding it down with your pestle.
âWhatâs that?â Heâd ask, and youâd think, with the way his eyelids droop lazily above his stare, that he could care less about the long winded explanation you offered regarding the many different uses of ginger and boswellia â but the next time you were making his salve, he was handing you the herbs in exactly the order you needed them.
âWhat are these?â Heâd point to the makeshift herbal garden youâve built in your spare bedroom, and he listened with rapt fascination as you demonstrated herbs that are not native to your prefecture, handing you the shears as he helped you cultivate your supplies.
âHowâd you learn all of this,â he questioned once while you were changing his bandage, and he scoffed when you told him it was knowledge passed down from your grandmother, who got it from generations before her, who got it from generations before them.
âI didnât think humans cared to do these kinds of things,â he mumbled, watching you cleanse at the healing gash with a cold cloth. You looked up at him in offense.
âWhat do you mean by that?â
âI thought all humans knew what to do was fight and kill,â the disdain was clear in Sunaâs voice, and your fingers continued to work their treatment.
âAnd I thought all kitsune knew what to do was trick and lie,â you retorted, and the fox very nearly snarled his teeth. But the moment you rubbed a generous amount of your medicine, Suna could immediately feel the effects radiate through his chest. The pain slowly dissipated until he felt nothing more than an itch around the newly formed skin â his relief had been evident from the satisfied smirk on your lips.
âMaybe we were both wrong, hmm?â
You donât bring up the blush on his cheeks, nor the fact that heâs also stopped flinching away from your touch.
â§ïœ„ïŸ: *â§ïœ„ïŸ:* ăă *:ïŸâ§*:ïŸâ§
Six weeks later, Suna Rintarou could only describe his time in your home as different.
It was different in that he doesnât feel the need to look over his shoulder for something sharp and pointed against his throat. It was different in that the frostbite at the tips of his fingers had been absolved by the warmth he felt from the soup youâve both made from the vegetables youâd gathered that morning, spreading far out from the pits of his belly down to the ends of his hairs.
You spoke to him with such easy grace, that each breathy laughter he managed to procure from your lips felt sinful as the melody flowed into his ears. You only ever looked at him with kindness â a rare experience for a thing like him.
Some days, when the ache in his body is dull and the strength is returning to his bones, you would find him patrolling the perimeter of your property, bending over to inspect the sturdiness of your fence, or testing the durability of your windows. The sun would rise from dawn, and fall into dusk before Suna would return back from his perusal. And while he refused to disclose just exactly what he had been doing outside for so long, a protection charm nailed against the tree behind your home had betrayed his secrets.
More than once, you would ask him to demonstrate his kitsune abilities, but no amount of puppy dog eyes or thinly veiled threats to stop his treatment could change Sunaâs answer from a hard No.
âI bet you donât even have any powers,â you pouted after hours of pestering with no reward
Suna would just laugh and shake his head, âIf thatâs what you want to think.â
It was easy to forget the original conditions of your arrangement.
What used to be lonely nights and quiet dinners soon became filled with stories of childhood and dreams beyond these four walls. The tediousness of pruning the weeds around your herbs was forgotten behind the lazy smiles of comforting company.
And with the improvement of the feral yokai you had found in the snow, came the realization that just as the fresh white powder is meant to melt into the rivers, all good things are bound to end.
â§ïœ„ïŸ: *â§ïœ„ïŸ:* ăă *:ïŸâ§*:ïŸâ§
âItâs all healed up now,â you say a week later, lifting Sunaâs arm to inspect the fresh, white scar that now decorated the underside of his right breast, âI couldnât do much about the scar, though.â
âThatâs fine,â he responds, needling his arm back into the sleeve of his yukata, âIt looks kind of cool.â
You chuckle at the thought before a hush falls upon the atmosphere. Sunaâs eyes are trained onto his feet on the floor, his ear twitching as he fiddles with the hem of his clothes.
âThank you,â he mutters out before slowly rising to meet your gaze, and you offer him a tight smile.
âIt was nothing,â you laugh, waving a hand in front of your face.
A shiver travels down your spine as Suna wraps a hand around your wrist.
âMy life is not nothing,â he whispers, lowering his head a fraction of an inch towards yours.
You swallow thickly as your eyes fall onto his lips. âIf thatâs what you want to think.â
He smirks slightly as he licks his lips, lowering even further until he stops. You hadnât realized you stopped breathing until your lungs began to burn for air, and the thumping of your heart could be heard in your ears.
He remains frozen in place, his grip around you loosening as your eyes trail to meet his gaze.
Except, he wasnât looking at you. His expression is crestfallen as he stares at his black claws against your wrist, and he traces his thumb over the deep pink scars that now decorate your skin.
Suna lets you go.
âYou should get some rest,â he says as he pulls away.
You smile at him sadly.
âGood night, Rintaro.â
âGood night,â he replies, and he steps forward to place a chaste kiss on your forehead, âThank you for everything.â
The sincerity in his words brought tears to your eyes.
In the morning, he was gone.
â§ïœ„ïŸ: *â§ïœ„ïŸ:* ăă *:ïŸâ§*:ïŸâ§
Once a month, you take a trip into town to sell excess inventory from your personal stock. Perhaps youâll meet a villager with a particular ailment that only your Kampo could resolve, or a weary traveler simply looking for tea to help them sleep.
But today, youâve met a man disgruntled by something else entirely.
âSo, I heard you think itâs okay to hang with yokais,â the stranger followed you down the beaten bath, slurring his words and stumbling over his feet. You say nothing in return.
âWhat, humans not good enough for you, or something,â he was getting closer now, and you could feel his hot breath on your shoulders. You pick up your pace, but for someone so inebriated, he was hot on your heels.
âHey, Iâm fucking talking to you, you biââ
At the same instant you felt a hand tightly grip your shoulder, you could feel an intense heat blow against your back, and gone as instantly as it came.
You turn around to see your assailant splayed out on the ground, desperately patting away at the red flames that licked at the edge of his clothes.
Suna emerges from seemingly nothing but a flash of lightning, walking dangerously slowly towards the pathetic man cowering the opposite way. A fire as hot as his flames burned beneath his irises, and you could never have imagined a look so angry on Sunaâs soft features.
He lights his right palm in burning red fire.
âTry to touch them again if you want to die today, human.â
Red Fox Fire dances up into the air, licking hot at the harasserâs feet until they were nothing but a blip in the horizon.
You stay rooted to your spot, hand clutching your chest at the sudden display of Sunaâs strength.
âRintaro,â you called out to him.
Suna keeps his back to you, the furs on his ears and tails standing straight up. Soot stained his jacket from the fire he sent out to your attacker, and the faint scent of smoke wafted from his hair. You slowly take a step forward from your spot in the road, and slowly take another once you realize heâs not running away.
You delicately placed a hand on his shoulder. His head snaps to your touch, but still he refuses to face you.
âAre you⊠afraid of me?â He asked slowly.
You wrap your arms around his shoulders, resting your cheek against his back.
âNever, of you,â you replied.
Suna places his hand on top of yours, pulling them apart so he could turn to face you.
âI thought you left,â you said, blushing as he holds your hand in his.
âI thought I did too,â he replied, brushing a finger against your cheek, still frowning at the claw the pressed against your skin, âMaybe I still should.â
You scoff, holding his hand against your cheek.
âPlease, just kiss me already.â
Suna smiled, dipping his head down to your lips.
â§ïœ„ïŸ: *â§ïœ„ïŸ:* ăă *:ïŸâ§*:ïŸâ§
A shock spreads throughout your body as you pull away from the supple lips of Suna Rintarou.
Your fingers reach up to trace the grooves in your lips, goosebumps dancing all along your skin as it soaks in the after effects of the sudden contact.
The keys to your apartment still hang from the key ring hooked on your fingers. The sound of cars driving past your building filter into the empty hallway as Suna stares at you dumbfounded.
Tears stain both of your cheeks.
âDid⊠you just?â Suna was afraid to ask.
Your head nods slowly, and you reach forward to caress the skin on his cheek.
He leans into your touch.
âItâs good to see you again,â you smile, and though you had just met the handsome boy in your English class just two weeks ago, he puts his hand on top of yours, and he knows.
âYou, too,â Suna smiles back.

Caught in My Chest 2/2
Marinette looked around her classroom taking her seat in the back and no one even gave her a second glance except Adrien.
"Marinette, since you missed so much class I can help you after school today if you feel up for it," Lila said sweetly before fake wincing. "Or maybe not my port has been acting up lately," Lila said crocodile tears coming to her eyes.
"Port?" Marinette asked and Alya glared at her from the front of the classroom. "Wouldn't that mean you have..." Marinette started holding her right arm where her piccline was.
"Go on Marinette ask her!" Alya yelled holding Lila close.
"But that's, I just..." Marinette started. "I was just discharged from the hospital with Hodgkin's Lymphoma," Marinette finally said and all faces turned toward her.
Never before had Marinette seen the class so mad at her all because of a lie. How Lila had gotten a hold of this information was unexplainable but the fact that she would turn it around was unspeakable. "I can't believe you would say you have cancer just to try and show up Lila Marinette! You know she was recently diagnosed!" Marinette's breath was caught in her chest and she felt like she could never breathe again. Adrien stood up red faced and shaking.
"You're all idiots! Lila has been playing you since day one and the only reason why I haven't said anything is because I didn't have any proof," Adrien said and Marinette looked at her former crush in shock. "If any of you even bothered to do some research you'd know what a monster she is." Lila looked at Adrien angrily.
"What do you mean proof?" Lila asked trying to keep up her hurt persona.
"Medical records," Adrien said slapping them down on the table. "Also the fact that Marinette here has been in a healthy relationship with Damian Wayne for almost a year now and the fact that he is paying for her treatment and housing her after you turned her parents against her is another factor." Lila's face started to turn red.
"You have no right to go through my documents," Lila said picking up the files.
"I mean if there were any there, your bill of health has been clean for years Lila, Marinette's on the other hand not so much," Adrien said. "That's all I needed to say, we can wait and do more have later when Damian gets here but I can't say he'll be as nice about it. Marinette is the only family I have left and I'm not going to let you drag her through the grass anymore," Adrien added going to sit in the back of the classroom next to his friend.
"You didn't have to do that," Marinette said leaning on his shoulder. "But I appreciate it kitten," Marinette said winking and Adrien knew he was busted.
"I'll always be here for you M'lady," Adrien said and class started without delay.
Lunch rolled around and everyone was conflicted, Lila had lied to them about a deadly illness about so much, and Marinette, who they treated like garbage, was the one who was really sick. A large sigh could be heard from the door and two boys with black hair stood in the doorway one pushed sunglasses to the top of his head smiling and the other's face was stone cold.
"Alright, students of Francois Dupont, my name is Dick Grayson and today we're going to be talking about some certain behaviors of slander toward our name," Dick started and the whole lunchroom froze. "Recently we have heard from a patient of our program to help cancer patients around the world that there has been some issues, we are here to clear that up." Students suddenly noticed that he was reading from a screen on his wrist. "I sound like a robot," Dick whispered to Damian who rolled his eyes.
"Furthermore, patient 13078, Marinette Dupain-Cheng of the Wayne Foundation clinic was taken under our care at time 4:37 on March 30, 2021, she was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma and moved to urgent care on April 2, 2021, after a biopsy on the first of April, 180 days of treatment are being provided and paid for in full. Lila Rossi who is not a patient of the Wayne foundation clinic has been seen harassing the patient which can cause stress levels to increase and therefore panic attacks which lead to trouble breathing and a shutting down of her lungs or windpipe in general if Miss. Rossi does not comply with our orders or removal from the school and distance from Miss. Dupain-Cheng, then we will be forced to take more forceful action..." Dick continued.
"Is this really necessary? Just stop messing with my girlfriend and apologize you assholes," Damian said and Dick sighed putting his arm down.
"Marinette, we know that things will never be the same but we're here to fight this with you," Alya said and Marinette felt tears well up in her eyes. Even if these people had been nothing but cruel to her she still wanted their support.
"We'll help you in any way we can dudette," Nino said wrapping an arm around her shoulder.
"That really means a lot guys but I need time to get over this with people who are truly going to be at my side, I'll appreciate everything you do though," Marinette said getting up and walking over to Damian with Adrien following close behind.
"You did what you thought was right beloved," Damian said and Marinette just smiled sadly. Damian looked over her head at Adrien who stared right back. "I think I know someone who might be able to make us all feel a little happier during this time, I'll see what I can do," Damian said leaving the superhero duo together to call a friend who could certainly bring the sunshine into Marinette's life again.
"A lot is about to change kitty," Marinette said holding the blond's hand watching Damian talk on the phone.
"180 days of fun M'lady," Adrien responded and suddenly a boy landed next to Damian and ran over to Marinette.
"Ready to kick some ass future Mrs. Wayne?" the boy asked and Marinette just chuckled blushing. She could already feel the weight being lifted off her shoulders.
The first few weeks were hard, she had to work to stay awake and study, keeping up with others was becoming a challenge.
The second month was painful but then again there was poison in her body constantly being flushed in and out.
The third month, radiation started, she was scared but she knew it had to be done.
Month four, she was almost done they said maybe even healed soon.
Once they had the caner isolated, she just had to have that laser there and then, hopefully, it would all be over.
Marinette had 180 days of meeting Damian's self-proclaimed best friend Jon by her side being whatever he needed her to be, she had the best partner she could ask for who was there to talk to her whenever she was scared, and she had Damian, her rock in the ocean.
When Marinette went into the doctors office and read off her paperwork, tears flooded her eyes as she bit her lip trying to contain her smile.
She was cured. Sixteen years old and she fought cancer and won.
She walked into school looking at the anxious faces of her peers.
"I've wanted to tell you something that I've known since the beginning of treatment, I'm moving to America after this was over, there's something about being here that makes me feel tied down. I did it, I fought and won a war far bigger than myself but somehow there's still something that I feel like I need to do or say, like there's something caught in my chest," Marinette said smiling sadly. "Lila never said anything, and that's what stings the most but I know I leave you guys as better people and you'll never make the same mistakes again, I want you to know I forgive you, every one of you." Marinette looked over her classmates one last time eyeing their expressions of tear-filled faces. "I have a flight to catch, bug out," Marinette said taking Damian's hand and walking past Jon and Adrien at the door and out of the school.
For the first time in a long time, Marinette felt her heart flutter as she took a deep breath and got on the plane.
a/n: This was such a hard story to write for me and I'm so happy to anyone who is reading and hope you enjoyed this experience. It has actual factual information in it and maybe you might have even learned something which would be cool huh? I hope to end up like Marinette in the next 163 days. thank you for reading

Â àł Katsuki Bakugo is the righteous yet arrogant village prince of the east. The entire village relies on him for protection and for guidance, further inflating his ego. however, after a cursed boar attacks him and the curse is passed on to him as a poisonous mark on his arm, slowly consuming him until he becomes a demon himself. he is exiled without hesitance from his village and is to go on a journey to look for a cure, a journey he might never come back from. With the help of two of his most trusted allies, he embarks on a journey to look for the gods of the forest in where he meets a girl (just as striking as him) who brings him back down to earth, saves him and make him experience a true life worth living.
âDamn this life.â Katsuki curses under his breath, rolling up his sleeves, and collecting clear water from the riverbend and transferring it into his jar.
âHey! This isnât that bad!â Eijiro Kirishima, son of the second in command to Katsukiâs mother, his most trusted ally and #2 most annoying fucker on this planet, cheekily grins, patting the blonde on the back. âWeâve gone through worse things in the past. And yet here we are! Weâre still alive! Arenât we?â
âYea! Weâll find the forest gods soon! Offer food for them and hopefully they give us a cure! This is going to be easy!â Denki Kaminari, another one of his most trusted allies, grandson of one of the wise elders, and #1 most annoying fucker on this planet, reassures his friend whilst aimlessly fixing the saddle on his elk.
Why did life have to be like this?
Who did Katsuki Bakugo infuriate from high above to have this tremendous bad luck and fate be put upon him? All he wanted was to live a noble life as a village prince, have his mother pass down her position of power onto him, become the new village chief, live a life of prosperity, help his people, and then pass away with no regrets. But life just had to do this to him no?
After an unexpected attack of a raging cursed boar consumed by black slithering enigmas in the hills of Mustafu village, the handsome village prince was the only one able of combat who was around the vicinity at the time. He had no choice but to hurl himself in front of the boar, shooting one of his famed  arrows, sharper than most and one of the best in his arsenal.  The boar had met its demise by his hands. However, not without getting revenge at Katsuki, by passing its curse onto him. The black ooze slithering onto his arm before the animal had fully perished.
That was the worst day of his life.
As the son of the village chief and as one of the most well-known individuals in his tribe, how was he supposed to react?
Katsuki had always been number one. Never once slipping to loss or to failure. Never getting injured. Never letting his guard down. Never disappointing his parents. Never losing his pride nor his mighty personality.
He was the paragon of success.
But, sometimes, the best people feel lost and useless too.
The fact that his mother had easily let go of him, have the wise villager elders speak ill of him and banish him, having to leave everything he had loved and worked hard for, lose his position as a prince, and have the people of his village look at him in abhorrence and disgust, had ended up becoming the most painful experiences he ever had to go through in his entire life.
Leaving quietly at the dead of the night with no proper goodbyes but a brief hug, gift of a good luck charm from his mother, and the willing accompaniment of his two most trusted friends (although he would not like to admit the appreciation he has for them, he was very grateful) on this fruitless journey⊠He could never have it any other way.
What kind of life was he even going to lead from here on forth?
He didnât want to stop believing. He didnât want to lose hope. This wasnât like him. Katsuki Bakugo knew who he was. He knows how headstrong he is, how prideful, persevering, and how much of a smart-ass he is. He had no time to sulk and contemplate about his demise and what fate had in store for him.
Although, it would be nice if he could release all these pent-up emotions and frustrations at least once. Just once.
He just has no idea how to and who to open up to.
Putting his vulnerable emotions aside, he is going to defy his destiny and take down whatever may come his way.
Making sure no one was going to stop him from doing so.
âLetâs go.â Katsuki jerks his head, gesturing his party members to start walking to the other side of the forest.
âWait⊠havenât we gone there already?â Kaminari protests, not raising his voice nor overreacting because even he knew that Katsuki was on a bad mood as per usual. (With this being the second afternoon of their journey and because they have to leave their animal companions by the river due to how unstable the geographical and terrestrial properties of the forest were.)
Katsuki shoots him a glare, the other blonde clearing the lump in his throat in response. âOkay okay! Letâs go then!â
They quietly navigate through the forest, hearing nothing but the sound of their own feet stepping on the grass, crickets chirping, fireflies flying about, the towering trees swaying with the wind, and the calming yet lonely atmosphere of the woodlands to accompany them.
âKirishima.â Bakugo calls out coldly. âAre you sure that this is the same forest depicted in the legends?â
âPositive.â Kirishima replies, nodding aimlessly whilst turning his head and taking in their surroundings. âIf we spot some Kodama, that means weâre near the tree that stands alone.â
âTree that stands alone?â Denki asks, tilting his head and sparking a discussion. âAlso, what even is a Kodama?â
âYouâre the grandson of a village elder yet youâre asking me?â Eijiro narrows his eyes at his other blonde friend. âKodama are the little white spirits who live in trees. They donât necessarily guide travelers but instead watch them. They only intervene if ever anything bad happens. If we see them appear then that means weâre close to the spiritual core of the forest. The tree that gives life.â
Yakushima Forest. Located in the southern region, is the settlement of the forest gods and the place where the oldest trees of Japan and those known to man stand strongly. The power and the spiritual energy stored in this wonderous and enchanting forest could only be seen and could only be discovered by heroes and travelers with a pure of heart as the forest was welcoming only to visitors with pure and selfless intentions. However, to those who wish to exploit it and to ruin its beauty will be punished heavily by the gods in the most gruesome ways possible.
Katsuki breathes out a hefty sigh, leading his two other friends who were happily following him from behind. There was this bizarre feeling of anxiety welling up inside him. He was not himself and he couldnât tell why. All he could do was pretend to remain calm and collectedâŠ
He will find that cure.
He will be able to save himself and he will be able to come back to his village, victorious and free of the curse.
Bakugo stops in his tracks when they encounter another streaming river. His two companions almost bump into him with how abrupt he halted in his steps.
There was something amiss in the river.
It wasnât a bad spirit nor was it some bad energy, but Katsuki could feel something.
There was someone else there.
And he felt that they werenât exactly the friendly type who would help them.
âBakugo-sama, why did we stop-â Kaminari is hushed by his blonde friend before he could even have the chance to utter another word. Kirishima quickly picked up what Katsuki is trying to motion to them and proceeds to quietly scout around the area. âThereâs a girl? Wolves too.â He whispers from behind a bush not far from where his friends were standing.
âLetâs go back to the nearby village. Stay at the inn there.â Bakugo whispers sternly, as if not wanting to hear any other remarks from his friends.Â
âWait! Bakugo, I know weâre near the tree. Why stop now!?â Kirishima fussed. He knew something was up. âWeâre pretty close. We can just set up a fire here then-â
âI said letâs head back. Damn it.â Katsuki repeated his words. This time, in a sort of a growl. âIf you donât want to go back, feel free to die here if you want.â He starts treading back to the path where they came from. Denki looks at his red-headed friend worriedly, even he, of all people, had finally noticed that there was something wrong with their most beloved village prince. Kirishima nods at him cautiously, the two of them walking together behind Bakugo.
They quickly got back to the small village near the forest with no interruption, as the chit-chatter and the energy radiating between both Kirishima and Kaminari were low as Katsuki was in a even terrible mood, refusing to talk to any of them nor humoring their antics and small jokes.
They continue to spend the rest of their day in silence. With, Katsuki, immediately heading back to his quarters to rest whilst his two other companions remained outside to help some village folk and prepare dinner.
The village chieftain of the quaint settlement had a good relationship with Katsukiâs mother. They were good trade partners and the village chief wanted to do everything in their power to help Katsuki be free of the curse by the means of giving him a private inn to stay in and come back to whenever he and his friends would like to. It wasnât much, but Katsuki needed all the help he could get on this otherwise hopeless quest. Even if he refused the said offers at first.
After another awfully quiet bonding time with Bakugo at dinner, the convivial duo had to break the silence. Denki had thought of the most wonderful idea of bringing up the topic of the girl who was accompanied by wolves in the forest. Because, hey, itâs a girl in the forest! What could possibly be weird about that?
âHey! So about that girl that we sawâŠâ Kaminari suddenly speaks up, nudging Kirishima in the arm, signaling him to answer his query. Bakugo barely looks up at the sound of his friendâs yapping, continuing to play with the food on his bowl. âWho do you think was she?â
âSheâs most probably the wolf princess.â Eijiro shrugs casually, biting on a roasted corncob. âYakushima forest is protected by the three animal gods whom we know by now as the forest gods. The Wolf goddess, The Gorilla king, and The Deer god. The Deer god being the most powerful of them all. There have been rumors and reports going around that the goddess had taken in an abandoned human girl, and was treated as one of their kin years ago. The girl holds pure resentment for her own kind and chooses to live in the Yakushima forest, taking down every single human who has negative intentions and evil plans for the land she lives in.â
âWell, if sheâs that badass, then you shouldnât call her a princess. Sheâs a queen!â Kaminari remarks, biting on his newly roasted corncob, listening eagerly to Kirishimaâs tale. Bakugo looks up at Denki and the goofy blonde could have sworn he saw a small smile form on Katsukiâs face.
Kirishima laughs at his friendâs little quip, âYouâre right. Sheâs amazing, isnât she?â
âYou weirdos should get to sleep. We go back to the forest first thing in the morning.â Katsuki stands up from his seat, his hands in his pockets, grumpily trotting away to the inn.
âOh.â Denki blinks. âThat was faster than I thought. I didnât expect him to be convinced so easily. Did you pull that story from your ass Kirishima-kun?â
The red-haired teen shook his head. âNope. All of that was real.â
âFor real? Youâre not joking?â
âYup.â
âOh, thatâs cool. Goodnight then!â The other blonde leaves his seat, patting Eijiro in the arm before leaving and going back to his quarters.
Kirishima looks up at the glistening night sky, a few stars present in the sky to greet him a wonderful night, the boy hoping he would find an answer amongst the stars. âMay the gods help us in our adventure.â He breathes a hefty sigh, closing his eyes. After a few more minutes of praying for guidance, he puts out the fire and retreats back to his room.
The night passes by quickly, another day of their adventure waiting to unfold.
âDonât you dare come back here you disgusting prince.â
âNo one wants him here! Got it? Let him go on this adventure and never come back!â
âHeâs just a burden. To be cursed by an animal as simple as a boar? Pathetic.â
âUseless vermin.â
âBanished forever? How sad.â
âA prince falling from grace? Predictable.â
The voices of the village people echo in his head.
These were words from them that he was not meant to hear. Ones that he accidentally heard before leaving that same night. These were the words that will haunt him forever.
He, Katsuki Bakugo, of all people, would let all these horrid, vile, and false words get to him?
These were the same words with the same meaning that heâs heard hundreds and hundreds of times from different people, yet it never got to him. He chose to ignore them.
But, why now? What was going on? Â Why was he feeling this way?
Katsuki awakens at the dead of the night. Beads of sweat falling from his temples, his breath hitched and his body aching. He was not himself right now and this intense feeling of uneasiness and torment confirmed it. Although, he wanted to keep this to himself. He didnât want anybody else to know what he was feeling. He could overcome this on his own. He could do this all on his own.
âIâll show them.â He continues to breathe at a fast pace, still a bit shocked by the nightmare he had just seen. âIâll fucking show them that I am the prince of the Mustafu tribe.â He props himself up from his sleeping mat, reaching for his neatly folded clothes beside him. âAnd nothingâs going to change that.â
Katsuki begins to get dressed, feeling nothing but anger and determination running through his veins. He puts on his grey vest and wraps his red cape onto his back. He continues to put on his ensemble when a sudden rush of pain begins to throb in his arm. Bakugoâs immediate reaction is to curl up, holding his stomach to try and ease the pain.
The curse was acting up again, reacting to the anger and negative emotions that Katsuki was feeling right now. The blonde winces in pain, kneeling down on the floor to take a hold of his arm that was manifesting a glowing blue and black aura. His muscle continues to throb and he could do nothing but hold it down and take in all the pain until it eventually goes away.
After several minutes of resisting and trying to ease the pain by thinking of more positive and enlightening thoughts, the throbbing suddenly stops. Bakugo goes back to breathing at a normal pace. He rests for a few minutes, making sure that his body was functioning properly once more before he quickly heads out of his private room to head to back to Yakushima forest, searching for answers. He didnât have time to wait for Kirishima and Kaminari anymore. He was growing impatient, and hearing the haunting words of his village people circling in his head fueled his will power to get this whole ordeal done and head back home.
It was finally the end of another day protecting the forest.
You were about on your daily patrol with the wolf goddess and your wolf siblings, when you encounter three young men who looked like they were lost in the woods. You immediately assumed that they were looking for the tree of life. But they werenât like the others. They werenât finding it for selfish reasons. They were looking for it in hopes to find a cure for a curse. Thatâs what their auras were trying to show at least.
One of those men particularly piqued your interest.
He was⊠handsome? Was that the word that humans used?
He had ash blonde hair that spiked upwards at all angles, passionate red orbs that gave him such a striking appearance, as if he could hold up the world in his hands. Calloused hands that had taken a part in many battles, a muscular build like that of a noble warrior, a shining sword just as big as him and an arrow that he looked like he was adept at using.
Yet despite your observations, there was this mysterious air around him that you just couldnât understand.
â(Y/N)? Dear? Is anything wrong?â The elegant white wolf goddess, Moro, calls out to her human daughter, with a worried look.
âI saw 3 dorks by the riverbend on our patrol a while ago.â You say rather jokingly, trying to remember their faces. âI should have struck them down when I had the chance.â You shake your head, reaching for the knife in your skirt and grasping it.
âHow so?â The goddess twitches her ear, as if raising an eyebrow at you. âDid you feel any bad spirits within them? Any emotional aura? I told you to do that before attempting to attack anyone remember?â
âThere was this particular man among them who had strong energy. He was radiating a gloomy yet aggressive energy. Like that of a person hiding their true emotions to remain strong and brave to the outside world. I kind of felt sorry for him.â Your voice trails off as you nestle your body next to the wolf goddess, along with your siblings who were cuddled up next to you too.
âWhy donât you go check up on him then?â Moro replies casually, as if teasing you. You raise your head up, feeling a tint shade of pink appear on your cheeks.
âW-what do you mean?â
âYou know what I mean.â
A shrieking noise began to ring in your ears, signaling that a human has entered the forest. You quickly rise up from the bed of leaves you were sleeping in. Running out of the cave, you gallop down a slope and sprint your way to the foot of the forest. The spirits guiding you to where you needed to go.
You feel the hostile energy yet again.
Could it be the young man from earlier?
When he enters your field of vision, you climb up the nearest tree to get a clearer look at him from above and from afar.
He still had the same expression plastered upon his face since this afternoon. An irritated and scornful look, yet there was kindness in his eyes that you couldnât describe.
It wasnât the kindness that you would see from the eyes of a regular person but it was a kindness that was combined with a desire to protect the people around him. It was different and oddly comforting.
You continue to observe his every move, waiting for him to mess up or try to hurt the magical properties of the forest before you confront him to ask why the hell was he even roaming around in the forest, in the middle of night like a fluffy dog.
Katsuki noticed you standing on the tree-tops.
You werenât exactly the greatest hide and seek player.
However, he chose to shrug you off and ignore you as he continues to look for traces of spiritual energy that could lead him to the tree of life.
Based on the stories that Kirishima had told, he was actually a bit surprised by your appearance. He couldnât make out your face with the mask that you were wearing but he noticed your mildly disheveled hair, the ragged clothes you had on, a cape made of white fur and a necklace adorned with three fangs hanging on your neck. From that alone, he knew you were a princess. Not your conventional princess per se with all the jewelry, intricate headpieces and beautiful dresses but, the presence that you have has sort of a dignified feel to it. You might not look like the part but you embodied everything that a princess should be. Headstrong, intelligent, confident in her beliefs, and never afraid to stand her ground.
Thatâs what Katsuki thinks at least.
With all the stories that Kirishima had recited about the Yakushima forest, you were one of the most interesting bits.
Katsuki Bakugo was enthralled by you in more ways than one.
You were a mysterious enigma that he had to unravel.
You were getting a bit tired of watching him aimlessly roam around the forest. He was absolutely going nowhere which is funny because he didnât strike you as a person who had no sense of direction. In an alternate universe, heâd probably be kidnapped by some villain or bad guy if he continued to be reckless like this, just walking around without a care in the world.
You spoke too soon.
You barely dodge a sharp arrow that pierces through a tree. It wasnât from the young man you were watching but from someone else. Thieves. two of them.
You forgot that you werenât able to sense other humans entering the forest if you focus on a particular one. It completely slipped your mind that there would still be sick individuals who would try and attempt to find the riches of the forest despite the many incidents happening time and time again warning humans to not enter the Yakushima Forest if they want to explore it for their own selfish desires.
You hastily jump down onto the ground, releasing a flurry of punches and kicks at the thieves, knocking 2 of them unconscious. You thought that the fight was over until you hear agonizing screams from the other side of the forest.
You quickly sprint your way there, hoping nothing serious had happened and no one was hurt in the process.
You arrived in a secluded area, tall trees covering the sun or the moon for the light to seep into, resulting in a dark and gloomy atmosphere.
You stop in your tracks when you notice six thieves unconscious on the ground too. You were about to breathe a sigh of relief when you notice that the boy was panting heavily, injuries and deep wounds were present all around his body. He was terribly injured. He stares at you for a few seconds before collapsing onto the ground.
You grit your teeth, approaching him with a scornful look. âYouâve wasted your life by getting in my way!â You sheathe his blade from itâs scabbard, pointing it directly to his chest. Katsukiâs chest rises up and down, a sign showing that he was breathing normally but was at the brink of unconsciousness.
âIâll cut your throat! That will shut you up!â
âYouâre beautifulâŠâ
He mumbles, his eyes fluttering open, making intense eye contact with yours.
You suddenly feel your heart race, thumping loudly. You pull the sword away and jump away from him. You were taken aback by his words because of how he caught you off guard just like that. Who gave him the right to do this to you? Who was he in the first place?
Why did he make you feel all these soft and mushy feelings right now?
Who gave him the right to do this to you?
A human being?Â
A feeling sparking in your chest...
Is this what humans call love?
- Â Â Â Â To be continued.

The welcome ball had been exhausting. Riley finally saw them, all of them, the good and the bad. Mostly bad with Liam being the exception.. except the fact that with him came his stupid fiancĂ©e. She was forced to deal with the Penelopeâs and Kiaraâs of the court, and got none of the Oliviaâs and Drakeâs of the world, with Olivia blackmailed and Drake most likely avoiding the court. Majority of the conversations she had to deal with throughout the night consisted of her rebutting all the allegations against her, most people believing that she had jilted their king. At least she had Maxwell and Bertrand, her home away from home. With the maybe two seconds she had Liam to herself and the amount of work and effort she had to put into her first public appearance, she was completely drained and changed from a gown and into more comfortable leggings and tank after she got back to her room of the Fydelia estate. Just as she was decompressing from the stress of her night, there was a knock on the door. She opened the door to see a particular grin on the face of one Maxwell Beaumont carrying a vase of two dozen roses.
âGreetings, little blossom! One of the staff members stopped me on the way of delivering these, asking what room you were in and I insisted on catching you myself.â Maxwell invited himself into her room after handing her the arrangement. Riley pressed the roses to her nose, inhaling the beautiful scent, and she noticed a note wrapped around one of the stems. She unwrapped the note and turned to Maxwell, who had already cozied himself up on her bed, clearly excited to hear what was on the note. âI noticed the paper in the arrangement too, itâs clearly from Liam isnât it? You did so great tonight and he had the biggest puppy dog eyes on you, I knew his Prince Charming ass would pull off something like this.. well, go on! Read it!â
Riley quickly unwrapped and read Liamâs note, she had no idea the girlish grin she had plastered on and Maxwell was beaming. He had hated these past few weeks so much, he had been watching one of his closest friends, his makeshift sister, live in desperate torment, questioning her worth after hearing nothing from those she cared most about. She put the roses down and placed the note down next to them and looked up at Maxwell, âHe wants me to meet him on his balcony in 20 minutes..â
âThat is charmingly romantic, but did he slip in his royal socks and tumble down Madeleineâs overly buffed stairs?? Heâs clear across the estate, itâs way too dangerous for you to get out of here alone.â
Riley sighed and collapsed onto the bed with Maxwell, âI donât know Max, his note is sweet and remorseful, but.. maybe this isnât about getting back together.. maybe I should just focus on helping house Beaumont and getting home..â
Maxwell stretched across to Riley and smacked her across her head, âCome on, Riles! You have been unable to go a single day without asking about him.. at least twice a day! You NEED to go meet him, otherwise I think both of your little fairy tale hearts will die.â
Riley smirked and rolled her eyes, âYouâre so dramatic! And please tell me what fairy tale involved a half nude photo scandal and public humiliation leading to a bullshit engagement between a king and the only ice queen that would rival both Olivia and Elsa while singing let it go? Plus, didnât you just mention that itâd be too dangerous for me to get to him?â
âHellooooooo?? Ok first of all, literally all fairy tales are structured that way, couple meets and falls in love, and a public enemy curses them with a dramatic, heartbreaking lie, and then they defile all enemies and live happily ever after.. youâre just living the 21st century version of that! Nudes are basically the most vanilla scandal these days anyway. And secondly, have you JUST met mr covert ops extraordinaire, Maxwell Beaumont!? I said itâd be too dangerous for you to go out alone. Letâs just simply walk out together, and if we get any questions, we can just say weâre meeting my brother for.. you know.. this and that diplomacy reason.. whatever, Iâll wing it. Plus, look at you, youâre already dressed for stealth. I just need to get you outside, and then you can scamper over to Liamâs side of the building. Whaddya say, blossom?â
Riley was exhilarated. Maxwell always knew how to say the right things. She locked eyes with him, pointed straight to his chest and said, âYou son of a bitch, Iâm in.â They shared a mischievous smile and giggled their way out of her room, totally giddy without even shutting the door all the way. They were completely unaware of the royal guard that had been manning her room and slipped inside.
Thanks to Maxwell, Riley had successfully snuck out of the estate and crept to below the balcony of Liamâs room. She had to think fast as to how the hell sheâd get up there, and then she spotted the flower vine growing on a trellis against the building, and she let out a small victorious, âYes!â
But as soon as she took a step in that direction, a hand grabbed her shoulder and jerked her around so she was facing one of the royal guards. âI donât think so, lady Riley,â he put a heavy sarcastic emphasis on the term lady, as he was clearly disgusted by her newfound tarnished reputation. âYouâre coming with us.â
âUs?â And then from behind her, another guard bagged her head and she felt the grip of two men on each of her arms as they forced her to their destination, practically dragging her as they went. Rileyâs heart was thundering in her chest. Where were they taking her? Back to the airport? A jail cell? A dungeon? A firing squad? She wasnât at all expecting what she got. She was sat on a decently comfortable chair. The guards removed the bag and revealed to see she was in a study. A large one. And there before her on the opposite end of a mighty desk, was the king father, Constantine.
Constantine nodded a dismal to both the guards, and they took their leave. âWell, well. If it isnât the disgraced American.â Riley was utterly confused and could feel the former kings command in the mood of the room. He did not like her, and she could feel his dislike radiating off of him. âYou just couldnât leave well enough alone, could you, you foolish girl?â
âWh-what are you talking about?â
âYou had your exit, your out. You were scandled. Ostracized! I even had you as far as at the airport gates. But no, you came back. You came back and left me back at square one on how to get rid of you!â
Realization dawned to her, âIt was YOU!â Riley leapt to her feet. She felt no fear, only anger coursing through her. âYOU staged those photos, YOU unleashed Tariq on me.. and you timed the release of those photos, at the most prime time allowing maximum humiliation and zero time in between Liamâs announcement. Youâre despicable, I bet youâre even disappointed that Tariqâs attack on me didnât end.. didnât end up the way he planned.â She had deliberately slowed her speech as each new revelation came to play in her head, she had lowered her voice with disdain and disgust.
Constantine let out a scoff-laugh at what he considered to be a poor attempt of exerting dominance. âYouâre right, and quite honestly I donât care what that pompous buffoon would have done to you, but I must say, those pictures certainly did deliver.â Constantine was teasing and patronizing her, âAnd now youâre here, still trying to get to my son.â
Riley crossed her arms and rolled her eyes at him, âI donât know what youâre tal-â
âEnough. I know everything.â He waved in front of her the very note that Liam had written inviting her to his balcony that he got from one of the guards. âYou poisoned his heart, and now his marriage. And with that, the entire kingdom is poisoned, all because your feelings.â He spit the last word out as if he found it vile.
âI wish feelings could be helped, but they canât.â
âOf course they can. Love is a disease, and like all diseases, it can be vanquished in one of two ways. A cure, or death.â Constantine stood and leaned both of his palms flat on the surface of the desk. âDo you know where your beloved is right now? Heâs right down that hallway, he should be packing for his new life, prepared to take on his engagement tour to unify two Cordonian houses and assume the responsibilities and sacrifices it takes to be king. But no.. Heâs pining for you. Awaiting your arrival.â
âAnd I suppose you intend to keep him that way? Waiting for me, only to be rejected, never knowing I came for him?â Rileyâs voice was desperate, but still cunning in reality. She needed him to know her questionnaire was not doubtful, but challenging. That she hated his deliberate intentions.
âNo. In fact, youâre gonna walk down that hallway. Youâre gonna sneak in and tell him you got his note,â Constantine slid the note across the table, no longer wanting it in his possession, and Riley picked it up. âYouâre gonna tell him why you answered his call.. Because you donât love him. Itâll break his heart.. And that will cure him.â
Wide eyed, Riley could only assume the consequence if she didnât do as he said, âOr youâll kill me.â She stated with no question in her mind.
âOh no. Iâll kill him. Killing you would only make him love you more. And the marriage and kingdom would ultimately crumble.â
âAnd what about your precious Madeleine? I know how this works this is all about mergers and business transactions. How else would you get Godfrey and his house to join with yours?â
âPlease, if Liam were to die at an assassinâs hand, he would die a martyr. Godfrey would forgive, even laud, the death. And the merger would be complete.â
âYou would do that to your own son?â
âIâm doing it FOR my son.â Love was once Constantine's weakness and it led to Eleanorâs death. It scarred him and he became brainwashed. Convinced love was the enemy. And now, the product of his foolish love, was Liam, who he groomed to be the perfect king. Constantine applauded himself all these years. It was clear as day that even Leo knew the job belonged to Liam, so Constantine did everything to assuage any of Liamâs hesitation into taking on his duty. He always planned on Liam being the logical one, ready to take on the duty and a loveless union. Then that damn New York trip happened. And that damn Riley came in the picture. Immediately Constantine couldnât tell if he actually hated Riley, or if he hated the idea that Riley was basically the new version of Eleanor that heâd never have.

And When I am Formulated, Sprawling on a Pin - Chapter Twelve: And We All Fall Down
I know I say it every time, but thanks for all the support for this fic so far. It means a lot :)
As usual, you can find this fanfic in full on AO3 here.Â
And if youâre reading this for the first time, hello! This is a Chishiya x OC/female reader fic, and I hope you enjoy!
--------------------------------------
That evening, I didnât leave my room. Every time I closed my eyes, I could see Niragiâs face, the glint in his eyes as he turned on me. The image flashed in my brain over and over until I felt sick. He would try to kill me out of revenge. That was a fact. And that night, I drifted in and out of sleep, trying to stay awake just in case he burst through the door to finish what he started.
But he never did.
And then there was the marks heâd left. When I looked in the bathroom mirror, I flinched back, seeing another girlâs face. The skin of my neck was purple and red, like splotched lily pads of bites, marks and bruises. My cheek was blue and cut from the way heâd backhanded me, and my ankle wasnât much better.
If I left my room, people would stare. They would know. Some of them had seen me being dragged into Niragiâs room.
As the alcohol wore off, it became easier to realise how stupid I had been to get drunk enough that I could barely form proper sentences. The way heâd been pretending to listen⊠how heâd kept refilling my glass⊠even how heâd licked my cheek right before he had pulled me away from the bar. The scared faces in the hallways, they knew what was going to happen.
They pitied me.
And now, if I left my room, they would know.
The morning after the incident, I stayed holed up in my little cave, drinking water from the bathroom tap in a poor attempt at curing the intense hangover that was turning my mind into slush.
I didnât have any knives or items I could use as a weapon, but I did manage to find a screwdriver that somebody had left in a drawer. It wasnât exactly much protection against a rifle, but it was all I had.
But this wouldnât last. I would have to face them eventually; my visa was due to expire. For now though, I passed the time by translating what I could of The Metamorphosis. The kanji seemed simple enough, but some of the clunky phrasing threw me off.
ââæ°ăăăăȘ怹. That must mean anxious dreams.â I followed the kanji closely with my fingertip. âBut whereâs the bit about the cockroach?â Â
Suddenly, there was a knock at the door.
I held my breath, clutching my screwdriver until my knuckles turned white.
There was another knock.
Oh god, this is it. Iâm going to die.
And then the person called out. âItâs Kuina!â
The relief I felt was a cool breeze, washing over me. âCome in.â
The door opened and Kuina entered. She took a seat on the end of the bed, but she wasnât smiling. Instead, she was looking at me in the same way my mother used to at times.
There mustâve been a full minute where neither of us spoke, trying to figure out the best way to broach the subject.
Then at last, she said quietly. âApparently Niragiâs been throwing a fit. Someone scratched his face⊠and Iâve heard some rumours.â
I tried to swallow against the lump in my throat. âWhat did you hear?â
âPeople say they saw you drunk, that Niragi took you into his room.â She paused, tentative. âDid heââ
âNo,â I interrupted. I could feel my upper lip beginning to tremble. âI got away before he could. He was going to though. He said it was because of Chishiya. He wanted to⊠you know, get back at Chishiya. Not that he would care, anyway. We had an argument.â
It was that part that upset me more than I thought it would. The fact that no matter how many times he had helped me or saved my life, he wouldnât give a damn about what Niragi did to me. If Niragi wanted to get back at him, heâd chosen the wrong method entirely.
âAhâŠâ Kuina tilted her head back. I could feel the questions just threatening to spill from her lips. She wanted to know, but she also didnât want to ask.
I didnât want to talk about it, or even think about it. âCan you see anything that mentions a cockroach in here?â I pointed at the line of text I had been studying.
She seemed visibly confused by the sudden switch in subject, but she still walked across the room to peer at the book. âI canât see anything that mentions a cockroach.â
I raised a brow. âThatâs hard to believe. The cockroach is the main character.â
Kuina squinted, then nodded. âIt says âćčăźć·šć€§ăȘæŻè«â insteadâ
âWhat does that mean?â I asked.
âGiant poisonous insect.â
Snapping the book shoot, I tossed it onto the table. âI want words with whoever translated this,â I said, laughing harder than necessary.
Kuina smiled awkwardly, unsure. I didnât know what was so funny. There was nothing especially funny about the words. In fact, they were utterly devastating. I was devastated. Then I realised I wasnât actually laughing at all. Kuinaâs arm made its way around my shoulders, as her fingers brushed through my hair comfortingly. She didnât speak, but just having her there was enough.
âIâm sorry.â I wiped at my face with my sleeve. âI just, I donât know what to do. Or even how to react.â
She shrugged. âHow youâre reacting is fine as it is. Thereâs no one way of going about it.â
âMaybe,â I said, sniffing. I probably looked a sight for sore eyes, and my hangover was still raging. âIâm scared of running into him, Niragi, I mean. And Chishiya too, I donât want to see him.â
How Iâd behaved back then was shameful, the way Iâd snapped and screamed at him, even though he was stating things I already knew deep down were true. He had been right, but I hadnât wanted to hear it. Yet despite that, I was still hurt. Right off the bat, heâd dismissed everything I felt, smiling as my anger only grew stronger. He had been in control of the entire conversation, and Iâd walked right into his web.
Kuina played with her quit-smoking aide sheepishly. âWell, actually, I admit, I didnât just come down here to see if the rumours were true. I also kind of need to speak to you about something⊠we both do.â
This was the last thing I wanted. Facing Chishiya again was bad enough after our argument, but now that I was covered in Niragiâs pawprints, it was much, much worse. âKuina, I really donât want to see him.â
She held up her hands, and bargained, âyou donât have to speak to him, or say anything at all. Iâll even talk to him for you. Just hear us out.â
The thought of seeing his smug face again sent dread through me. Heâd probably take one look at these bruises and call me pathetic. I knew I shouldnât care what he thinks, but I really did, even if I didnât know why. But since it was Kuina who was asking, it was hard to refuse.
âFine.â I nodded stiffly. âBut Iâm not speaking to him.â
--------------------------------------
The rooftop burned under the glare of the sun, the heat radiating through the soles of my shoes. I had to squint, as the brightness clashed with my awful hangover. Standing at the edge, looking down on the patio, Chishiya had his back to us. However, there was something off about his appearance that I couldnât place at first. Everything about him seemed as normal, except it didnât. He was wearing the white-grey hoodie that I had painstakingly washed and dried.
Is he trying to taunt me? I wondered.
But the thought flew out of my head as he turned around. When his gaze fell on me, his expression changed. It was one that I had never seen before, as his eyes narrowed, lips parting slightly. It was completely unreadable, and it lasted no more than a few seconds, before he looked away.
He doesnât look too smug⊠unless the hoodieâs an apology? I dismissed the idea immediately. I canât see him doing that. Â
He kept his eyes on the ground as he spoke. âBefore you storm off again, thereâs something you probably want in on.â
I glanced at Kuina, and she nodded reassuringly.
âWeâre leaving the Beach,â Chishiya said.
My stomach fell. Was I was hearing this right? He couldnât leave, neither of them could. It would only end in disaster. And Kuina⊠she was my only friend here. What would I do without her?
âThings are getting tense between Hatter and the militant faction.â He continued. âItâs only a matter of time before Hatter dies and this place turns to chaos. Thatâs why we plan on stealing the cards and leaving before that happens.â
What?
My head spun and Kuinaâs hand came to rest on my shoulder, steadying me. âItâs a lot to take in,â she said, âbut weâre telling you this for a reason. We want your help⊠and we also want you to come with us.â
âWeâ?
I swallowed, my eyes darting to Chishiya. He was finally looking at me. But it was strange. His expression was unusually guarded, suddenly more serious than I had ever seen it before. I couldnât see any of his usual slyness, nothing to suggest he was telling something other than the truth.
âWeâd be killed immediately,â I whispered to Kuina. âIf something goes wrong, theyâll shoot us on the spot.â
She smiled bitterly. âWith Hatter gone, weâll be killed anyway.â
âNiragi approached you before the Two of Spades game, didnât he?â Chishiya said. âIâm sure it was about me. As was this.â His catlike gaze brushed over my skin.
He wasnât wrong. Niragi had his eye on Chishiya, and given the slightest opportunity, he wouldnât hesitate to have him captured, tortured and eventually shot. And after yesterday, I had a target on my back too.
I have nothing to lose.
âOkay,â I said, at last. âIâll go with you. But first you need to let me know what the plan is.â Stubborn as ever, I directed my words at Kuina. I still wasnât prepared to deal with Chishiya just yet.
He seemed to notice this as he stepped away from the roof edge and walked to the door. He kept his head down as he passed, avoiding all contact with me. âYouâll have to talk her through the details. Iâve got something I need to do.â Â
And with that, he left us alone on the rooftop.
---------------------------------------------
Kuina and I mustâve spent at least an hour up there, sitting and watching the other residents flirt, drink and splash around in the pool below. She walked me through the basis of their plan. It wasnât complex or particularly detailed. Once Hatter had been murdered, the militants would likely force the other executives to put Aguni in charge, at which point there would be a speech with all the Beach members to announce Hatterâs death. The speech would keep the militant faction distracted, and weâd use the opportunity to break into Hatterâs room and steal the cards from the safe. Chishiya had assured Kuina that he knew what the code was. How he knew was still a mystery.
It would be dangerous, but I wasnât worried for myself. I was worried for Kuina, and dare I say it, Chishiya too. Even though he made me so mad and so hurt, I didnât actually want anything bad to happen to him. It was hard to admit, but I actually cared. Perhaps more than I wanted to.
What a shame he doesnât return the favour, I thought glumly, as I made my way back to my room after parting with Kuina.
The Hunting Season game had only given me a two-day visa, meaning mine was due to expire tonight, and knowing how nervous I was, Kuina had promised me sheâd meet me down in the lobby.
Letâs hope Iâm not put in a group with Niragi.
When I opened the door to my room, it took me a moment to realise that something was off. The air felt different, like someone had been in here.
And then I saw it. On a chair by the window was a stack of books, and as I approached them, a heaviness inside my heart lifted. The first book was an intermediate Japanese language textbook, seconded by an English-Japanese dictionary. The third was the battered, well-read copy of Wuthering Heights. But that wasnât all. Tucked beside them on the chair was the Walkman-turned-taser that I had last seen in the Tag game. It had a small post-it note stuck to the top.
âFor Niragi, next time.â
I couldnât keep the smile from my face as I clutched the taser. With the edge of my sleeve, I wiped away the tears forming in the corners of my eyes. I wasnât sure why I was crying, whether it was the shock of Niragiâs attack finally catching up to me, or the knowledge that Chishiya actually did care, even if just a little bit. It was a small gesture, his coming into my room and leaving these items, but it meant the world.
Part of me wanted to go and find him, ask him about it, and even thank him. But I didnât get a chance, as the announcement for the games sounded throughout the hotel.

honestly, my fury at the lack of werewolf culture/history/worldbuilding is worthy of its own post. Let me know if by some ungodly chance, you actually wanna hear my thoughts on it // Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes!
ohmygod yes, pls, enable me.
SO.
I think I mentioned b4 that Teen Wolf hates werewolves.
This is a show about werewolves like, yeah, sure, they do other plots and stuff. But the main character is a werewolf. The vast majority of the cast are werewolves (at least in the first half of the show). But think about it. What do we actually know about werewolves? They uhh, they shift on the full moon. But like, what about the full moon? Cusâ Scott gets handcuffed to a radiator and he doesnât shift and break out until the moon comes out from behind the clouds and he screams like itâs excruciatingly painful for him. But then Derek and his Betas are underground during their full moon, and they shift like itâs all fine and dandy (theyâre furious, but thereâs no pain) and it doesnât matter whether they can see the moon or not. They, uhh, theyâre allergic to wolfsbane/itâs poisonous to them (btw itâs poisonous to literally everyone, just the scent of it is enough to cause seizures and hallucinations in humans. Itâs a whole other frustration that they wonât make up their fucking minds abt it. Itâs one thing to say that this is some parallel universe where wolfsbane doesnât poison humans (bc lydia makes them hallucinate with the punch but injesting that much wolfsbane should kill you, and Stiles straight pulls a plant out of the ground; shouldâve caused itching, burning, a cough, nausea, fever, headache and More hallucinations) and yet Jackson has to see a doctor and gets told heâs got Aconite Poisoning. So WHAT IS THE TRUTH?) but apparently not enough for Derek not to be able to plant a wolfsbane plant and massive cord of roots (which he wouldâve had to tie together himself) in a revenge spiral around Lauraâs body. But just being around it causes wolves to lose control. But also thereâs supposed to be different strains that do different things? And also sometimes you burn the wolfsbane and it becomes the cure, or you have to burn it out of them or you just cut it out of them? Make UP Your MIND or at least ACKNOWLEDGE that different strains do different things. They get stronger on a full moon. But does that mean they get infinitely stronger with every full moon they experience? Does that mean they get weaker during new moons? Theyâre stronger in packs. Okay, but they never establish what the fuck a pack is. Is it an agreement? Is it a magical bond? Scott just sort of says people are in his pack. Does that mean they are? Do the humans he knows make him stronger? Just how strong is this bond? Derek makes a claim that âYou have your own pack nowâ so is that a joke, was he mocking scott? Or is he saying that thereâs no need for an Alpha and just being a beta with some friends counts as a pack? Apparently they have some kind of...animal magnetism or mind control? Derek uses a funny voice and a guy wakes up from a near coma to look at him with seemingly no control. Peter can force Scott to shift up. Derek forces Isaac to shift down. Derek has an insane amount of control over dogs and makes one lose its fucking mind from like a hundred feet away? Scott makes one calm down, but derek sends attack dogs running with their tails between their legs. Is it actual control or is it just a persuasion? Is it just intimidation? I havenât even gotten to culture. Youâre telling me that we get an entire episode of Allison discovering the entire story behind the Argent clanâs origins as werewolf hunters, why they started, how her name means Silver and apparently thatâs where the entire myth of silver hurting werewolves comes from, but we donât get to know anything about the first werewolves? Where they come from? If theyâre a form of evolution or just straight magic or if itâs a curse or a gift from the gods? Thereâs an entire hidden werewolf population with packs all over the world, but somehow thereâs literally no wolf culture? No moon worship? No specific terminology (Alpha, Beta, and Omega are terms used by a really fucking stupid biologist who studied frantic wolves in captivity and cast aspersions on the entire species. Heâs been disproven a Thousand Times. NONE of that Alpha, Beta, Omega shit is right. Packs arenât Hierarchies of Dominance. Theyâre families. Theyâre led by two wolves, yes, an âalpha pairâ thatâs literally JUST THE PARENTS. THE âBETASâ ARE THEIR KIDS. This terminology makes sense if used by HUNTERS who consider werewolves to be mindless dumb animals. WHY THE FUCK would werewolves use it to DESCRIBE THEMSELVES?) besides the absolute minimum of âI caught a scent?â Are you serious? Then thereâs werewolf ages. Oh my god that was so fucking lazy. Saying that werewolves donât age like humans, but that Cora is seventeen âby human standardsâ WHAT DOES THAT MEAN? Iâve seen theories that go so many different ways. The idea that Werewolves live really long lives because of the superhealing. The idea that they live really short lives because their healing just burns through their body really quickly. The idea that their lifespan is directly correlated to the amount of damage they take because they can only heal so much, so wolves who get hurt a lot age faster than wolves who donât. Thereâs NO explanation! Youâd think it might be an interesting point for Scott to find out that heâs gonna live to fucking 200 years old. (How old is Satomi again?) That sounds like something a Teenager would be daunted by. We see them make fun of Stiles a few times because he believes werewolf myths about silver, and then because he believes Peter when Peter tells him he lives in a series of underground caves. But like...why not? THESE ARE WEREWOLVES why did you just make them humans with extra facial hair? Where are the traditional mating rituals (or even the concept of a mate/life partner, can you imagine how interesting that wouldâve been? If Scott found out Allison was his mate? Or if he suddenly had all these weird urges around her, like rubbing their foreheads together or cuddling her way too much or wanting to bring her food? That wouldâve been fascinating and hilarious as subplots for their romance!) where are the full moon runs or pack get-togethers? Where are the aversions to perfumes or cologne? Where are literally any animal behaviors besides AGGRESSION? Where is the den-making? Can werewolves eat fast food or does the grease bug them? Talia was a famous Alpha bc she could full shift. Does anyone know why she could do that? âEvolutionâ is a bullshit answer, letâs be real. Itâs shitty writing and it put Derek through so much more than he deserved. THEY ACCIDENTALLY ESTABLISHED that ALL HALES can full-shift! ITâs NOT EVOLUTION. Itâs BIRTHRIGHT. Talia fullshifted. Peter full-shifted (though his was distorted into the monster thingy. That wasnât anything like Deucalionâs shift. It was a FULL SHIFT) Laura could full shift bc she did it after she died. No other werewolves on the show turned into full wolves after death, even if they died with wolfsbane in their system? MALIA could full-shift into a coyote. LITERALLY EVERY HALE except Cora and thatâs bc she got booted back to South America COuld FULL SHIFT (and it never happened after they lost all of their wolf powers, that coudâve been an interesting plot if they didnât FUCK IT UP.) But still thereâs no explanation, or even just acknowledgement? You donât have to spell it out for us, but at least SAY âHey, so the Hale family is really powerful and all of us can full-shift. Not sure why, but itâs neat.) Iâm still stuck on rituals. Routines. Werewolf mores. Social cues. Are there certain smells theyâre supposed to ignore? Is it polite to pretend you donât hear someone coming up to your house until they knock? Do they have rules about waiting until the Alpha eats before they start eating (much like how lots of traditional households wait for the father to dig in, or whoever is head of household)? Is it tradition to homeschool werewolves for the first few years until they learn control? Are there seriously no rules about biting humans? You donât have to talk to their parents or have a specific conversation with them? And if werewolves are so dominance/hierarchy based, then youâre telling me thereâs no âsecond-in-commandâ or respectful greetings that are supposed to be used for an Alpha? Thereâs absolutely no form of werewolf government or ancient laws or anything except a big spiral that is universally recognized as a sign youâre gonna kill people? What was the wolfsbane around Lauraâs body for? Why make the spiral out of that instead of just drawing in the dirt or something? We make a lot of jokes about Derek being bad with his words, but so is Peter and so is Cora. And theyâre the only born wolves we interact with (except Satomi who ALSO isnât a chatterbox) What if thatâs not just because theyâre all traumatized and cranky? What if theyâre just speaking on a different level? Scents and body language are integral to wolf interaction. Like how we say that Peter has that conversation with Derekâs eyebrows? What if Derekâs so fucking pissed all the time because he hates talking to Scott because SCott ISNâT LISTENING to his body language and scent and chemosignals? He tells Scott to use all his senses, and Scott does it fucking once to say that Peter felt âAngryâ and never again. What if Derek is Talking PLENTY (with his body and movements and reactions) but Scott just isnât paying attention? Isaac seems to understand Derek just fine. Erica and Boyd never complain that Derek is lying to them or âkeeping somethingâ from them? What if the reason Scott always thinks Derekâs hiding something is because he isnât reading the rest of Derekâs conversation and he assumes that the empty feeling is Derek lying. Even STILES seems to understand Derek. Heâs human, but he goes totally wolfy. He already uses body language a lot and while he gets mad at Derek he never has to ask what the fuck derek is saying or what heâs holding back. I digress. I wanna know why no other packs came to help Derek and Laura after their family died. I wanna know why Emissaries and Druids are so incredibly important to the supernatural/werewolf world but Derek barely knew they existed (Especially when itâs established that he know tons of lore about other species.) and even though every single pack should have an emissary, they never handle who is the emissary for Derekâs pack or for Scottâs pack (Once again, is an emissary bound to their pack somehow or is it just an agreement?). I wanna know why Derek knew Satomi and trusted her but for some reason never felt like he could ask her for help? Centuries of hiding and living amongst humans with almost no wolf behavior to their name, but none of these packs interact? Thereâs Druid Vets and Hunter cops and Emissary counselors. But no werewolf doctors? No werewolf teachers? Absolutely no werewolf society? If Derek was worried about Paige not accepting that he was a werewolf unless she became one, what does that say about his experience with humans? He says âthere were people in my family that were perfectly ordinary in that houseâ who died in the fire. But wouldnât he talk to a human pack member about his worries, if he had one? Or even a bitten pack member? He admits he doesnât know how to train a Bitten wolf. Heâs never been called out by a human pack member for using phrases like âcaught a scentâ or for reacting to things he shouldnât. Does this mean Derekâs family was entirely werewolves? No humans in the know? No bitten wolves? He has a huge thing about keeping the secret and never letting anyone in on it unless they get dragged into it. Did Derekâs pack have some kind of prejudice against humans? Was Derek raised to believe humans were weak or cowardly or something, that he thought this beautiful girl would automatically hate him and expose him if she were to discover the supernatural without being forced into silence by self-preservation.
Lots of times, itâs easy to forget in this fandom that so much is missing, because weâve been filling in the gaps for so long that some stuff is practically canon. Itâs generally assumed that the Hales were homeschooled before high school. Itâs generally assumed that thereâs some kind of bond that marks people as pack. We instinctively add in mentions of Scent and the use of the shift (growling, claws, a hint of fang, flashing eyes) as part of the casual communication between characters. We add in scent-marking and territory boundaries and specific roles in the pack. We do all of that and never think twice because itâs already in all the fic. But we did that. The show gave us nothing. It spent an entire season talking about the nogitsune and the oni and how theyâre summoned and what kitsune fox tails are for, but we never got to find out why wolves can do the pain-drain (or even if it dissipates the pain or just transfers it to the wolf doing the draining) or if Derek Hale EVEN HAS A DAD.

HOSTIS, Chapter XIX: Rosa, Rose
Previous Chapter (XVIII: Renuntiatio)
Member: Lee Hyunjae (tbz)
Genre (by chapter): drama, FLUFF fucking finally and light smut
Category: Short Novel/Long Series
âyouâve been trying to get rid of me for 10 years... and look where that got us?â
the crack that you couldâve imagined splitting the sky into pieces was short-lived, but it stirred you in your sleep, nonetheless.
bright, white light flashes through your opening lids but your body takes too long to prepare itself for the loud, vehement clap.Â
it sounded like someone had just thrown a bomb into the clouds.
you cower in fear at the call of mother nature, hands flying up to your ears as you push your head further into the pillow. there was some hint of sunlight spilling into the room, but that was the least of your concerns when the sky was trying to kill you.
a gentle, but firm force on your hips nearly warrants a harsh whack behind you if your hands werenât preoccupied with covering your ears.
âstop being such a wuss,â barely opened eyes stirred under his lids, a left arm circling your waist as he pulls you closer to his chest. warmth was radiating off him as if the blanket you were nearly fully covered by wasnât already keeping you safe from the outside world. ânothingâs going to happen to you, not while youâre here, at least.â
âew, gro--âÂ
clap
mother nature literally screams at you to shut up, forcing you to ball up further into his skin. his hold around you tightens, and he pulls your right leg up over his hip, palm resting flat and soft on your thigh.Â
âas much as i love to see you scared shitless, it sucks to know that i donât ever want to see you scared like this alone.âÂ
the words run through your hair and you now notice your hands were balled up into fists against his chest, his light breathing brushing against the little strands that fell over your forehead like little curtains.Â
âso be like this only with me, and you wonât have to be scared anymore.â
the skies refuse to let up and zeus hurls another lightning bolt down to earth, yet the orchestral accompaniment doesnât faze you that much anymore, not after what he said.Â
not when itâs completely reduced your hatred for him into nothing but ashes. ashes and dust that fly away in the gentle wind.Â
what were the ten years for, if both areses were going to tread on it like it wasnât the most dangerous thing to do?
what did the ten years of fighting do, if zeus meant for the two gods of war to round a circle in the ring of fire, only to put down their swords and admit defeat?
not to the fear of death, not to the lack of fight left in them.
but to surrender to one another.
where there were once thorns and daggers and poison now bloomed pansies, flowers that grow in winter; in harsh environments.
have you seen pansies in winter?Â
white on purple draws a striking, degrading memory in the little crooks and crannies of your mind.Â
for ten years, youâve avoided drinking poison, or going anywhere near it, in fact. in the process, becoming poison yourself. it wouldâve been like two pythons in a death match to see who could bite the other first.Â
yet, all of that was now of no value to you.
sure, youâve lost ten years trying to fight a losing war; the entire duration worried that you would lose to he who would triumph had you chosen to take a step back.
but the very fact that nobody lost wears through you like tires on asphalt.Â
the notion that both sides took turns destroying each other only to fall in love, becomes the very cure for the tumor in your heart.
why did it take so long for you to realise that you hurt when you couldnât read him? when he stayed so far away from you, breath on your skin but never touching you. eyes always glued to you, yet never soulful enough for your stomach to churn.
the very sight of him being away from you made you physically unwell.
so this was it.
he has claimed you and he has given himself to you.
zeus has failed in his plan to make the two of you fight to your deaths, but he smiles with pride and glory when he decides that aresâ happiness was more important than spilling blood and ripping flesh off bones.
but that was zeus, and you are ares.Â
ares is brutal.
and you wouldâve not hesitated to rip her flesh off HER bones if you werenât in a white coat and a doctorâs ID card was hanging around your neck like a dog tag.
âno, youâre joking!âÂ
choi minhee was bright, pretty, cream-colored, and had a disgustingly white set of teeth looking like headlights on a fucking truck.Â
you?Â
you were poison, daggers, the thorns on roses.
of all doctors to be assigned to her father, it just had to be hyunjae?
mrs kang was rather entertained with the conversation that was happening in the other corner of the ward, and she mustâve known your blood pressure was skyrocketing through the roof because she shoots you a look of slight mischief, almost a glance of knowing.
âi shouldâve known it was you,â the airy sigh that exits her parted lips calls for your attention over the clipboard.Â
âmr choi, you look too good for your age, honestly. this little injury will heal pretty good on its own as long as you take care of yourself while youâre staying here.â
âaw, no. youâre too kind.â
âheâs right, daddy. youâll take care of my dad, wonât you?â
a wince exhibits itself on your face despite your pen flying across the report, mrs kangâs current condition coming out in ink though you werenât even consciously writing every alphabet down.Â
âget anymore jealous and youâre going to be the one who needs your blood pressure taken, doctor l/n.â
mrs kang had her eyes focused on you in the corner of her eye sockets. slight embarrassment lights your soul on fire, but not as much as the irritation that was making your insides itch and squirm with despise.Â
âyou should come over for dinner some time soon, do you remember the stew that you liked?
âah, the one that mrs choi makes? of course, how could i forget?â
stew?Â
STEW?
âwhen daddy gets discharged, you have to visit sometime. mummy would be so happy to see you again!â
âwould she?â
âof course! my wife loved you!â
so her parents donât know he cheated on her.Â
doesnât matter.
iâm gonna fucking kill him anyway.
âyou shouldâve seen him last week, child.â
the clipboard gets slid back into the slot at the end of the bed, and your neck cranes to look at mrs kang sitting up in her bed.
âthe boy was in a mess.â
âyou look very well, hyunjae. itâs really been a long time.â
âhad you seen him and heard what he told me, youâd be in a mess too.â
ânah, four years donât do much.â
âdoctor l/n, are you listening to me?â
âyou took four years to look like this! doesnât he look great, daddy?â
âyou flatter me too much, minhee.â
the mere trill of someone elseâs name rolling off his tongue pushes you over an edge, an edge too close for comfort.Â
mrs kang reads your furrowed brows with ease and watches with a knowing smirk on her lips as you grab your patient files off the little cabinet next to the ward bed.
âiâll see you tomorrow morning, mrs kang.â
she sees right through your painful, forced smile, and she breaks out into a small chuckle.Â
the light hanging above her bed brightens the whites in her eyes, in contrast to the darkening sky right outside the window where choi minheeâs father was warded due to a small, almost unnoticeable stroke.
it tickles you to see mrs kang happy, but the voices coming from behind you were holding your heart in its hands, every word aggravating its merciless grip around you.Â
you turn on your heels and head out of the ward, trying your best to block out the voices that sounded like demons inside your head.
how you wished you could whack your patient files across that smug, pretty face.Â
how dare she talk to him like he didnât cheat on her? how dare he talk to her like that despite that whole dramatic confession last week? just how dare he--
someoneâs shoulder runs into your arm and your patient files clutter to the floor.Â
âoh, iâm-- y/n!â
he bends down to pick up your patient files before you could even process who you ran into.
âeric!â the surprised tone made your voice so much higher, you were sure it wouldâve caught hyunjaeâs attention if the clatter of the files hitting the floor didnât. âwhat are you doing in the wards wing?â
ârunning off to find the patient file archive office... doctor min wants me to help him finish one more thing before iâm done for the day.â
he hands you the patient files, and your hands brush across each other. he doesnât look at you with an ounce of awkwardness or distaste, and frankly, you missed his smile. you missed how enthusiastic he was.Â
you were lucky you were still friends with him.
âare you alright? you donât look too--â rubbing the back of his neck, his eyes travel from your face to movement behind you that you could see in your peripheral vision.
âiâll be right back!â hyunjae gestures into the room while he reverses out, and his patient files brush across your back.Â
ericâs eyes light up like bulbs and it stuns you to see how easily eric gets through it. âhyung!â
âeric! my boy!â he pushes past you like you were a road block and wraps his arms around the intern. âhow are you? i havenât seen you in so long-- the research department hasnât called for me since last week.â
âyeah, i know. iâve only been seeing y/n around in the research department. you must have more patients to care for.â
your eyeballs roll so hard in your head, you force a polite smile for eric while your feet turn to leave this party. âiâm gonna go--â
âwhoa, whoa, where are you going? itâs dinner time--â
âyou can find your dinner elsewhere, maybe have some stew at it if you like,â eric takes note of the disgust and disdain in your face before you pry the intern away from hyunjae so you could hug him instead. âi missed you so much. we have to catch up some other time, okay?â
âno problem! just drop me a text.â
the grin he presents you feels like soda on a hot day, and you walk off without bothering to turn to look at hyunjae.Â
the orange and blue sky outside your office window greets you like a flag, navy blue clouds cutting the skies into half across the horizon.Â
ââyou should come over for dinner soonâ,â items get swept into your briefcase instead of being placed in it.Â
ââdoesnât he look great, daddy?â who even calls their father âdaddyâ at 23? fluttering her eyes like she had something in her fucking eyes... smiling so hard that her eyes were literally missing from her fucking fac--â
the office door clicks open, and you see hyunjae walking in through your door in the reflection of the window.
the sharp sound of the zipper shutting the briefcase rings in the air like tearing a sheet of paper, and you shut off the main switch under your desk.
ây/n.â
a pen rolls off when you pick up your briefcase, coercing a frustrated groan out through your throat as you bend down to retrieve it.
ây/n, we said weâd have dinner together.â
âoh!â the sarcasm was dripping off your tongue, so when you turn to see his face, you know that he sees right through you.Â
but when has he not been able to?
âme? no! you have to get some of that mrs-choi-stew, donât you?â steps were trying to take you away from him in the direction of the door, but youâve barely made it past him when he grabs your upper arm without budging from his stance.
âkitten, wait.â
âdonât call me that and donât tou--â
âkitten, are you jealous?â
âno, iâm not,â effort to writhe out of his hold becomes useless, but you struggle anyway. âlet me go. i want to go home and--â
âso iâll send you home and we can order takeaway.â
âno, i donât need you to send me home--â
âi didnât ask kitten. iâm telling you i will send you home and we will have takeaway.â
âugh,â you vehemently yank your arm out of his grasp and glare at him. âdo whatever you want, mr âmy-wife-loved-youâ.â
by the time you were in the car, hyunjae was very obviously finding some kind of fun and enjoyment watching you attempt to control how much your blood was boiling. he doesnât say anything the whole ride to your place, and you try to convince yourself that you were only letting him drive you back because you didnât want to pay for a cab or public transport.
but you remember that you love him now, and every little thing he does will end up crawling across the surface of your bones like ants on skin.
once in your apartment, you throw your keys into the basket atop the shoe rack by the door. your heels get kicked off and you dump your briefcase noisily on the kitchen island.
the front door clicks shut and you pull yourself onto the high-chair, occupying yourself with your phone and a menu you would rather have fill your guts than the thought of hyunjae flirting with his ex-girlfriend.
âkitten,â his feet shuffles against the floor and he places his briefcase in the hallway where it led to the front door.
oooh, sushi.
âkitten.â
maybe korean?
âkitten, look at me.â
âdo you want sushi or--â
the device slides out of your hands and drops to the table with a soft thud, your high-chair being whirled around so suddenly before stopping abruptly.
the edge of the kitchen island etches itself against your spine as you lean back, one arm leaning on the surface while his fingers grip onto the edge of your seat.
âlook me in the eye and tell me whatâs wrong, kitten.â
is this man for real?
âfor a smart man, you are really dense.â
âwho said i didnât know whatâs wrong?â
what--
âi just wanted to hear you say it, thatâs all.â
the skin on his cheek suddenly looked so plump and fitting for your palm to kiss.
âsay it, kitten.â
âthereâs nothing to say--â
âno, tell me youâre jealous, and that you never want me to let choi minhee flirt with me again.â
âi really wish i could stab you and get away with it.â
âyou wonât even if you could, because you love me and thatâs why youâre jealous.â
the smile on his face was so sweet, it makes you want to shove an insulin jab into your eye. he was so satisfied with the way you reacted, it was absolutely unbelievable that he was getting so much out of you.Â
his torso was rocking back and forth so slightly, his face leaning forward into yours. his flirtatious eyes locks with yours that were fuelled with anger and jealousy.
âi donât think you deserve to hear anything because of what you let her d--â
you were interrupted in the form of a sudden kiss with his hands lining your jaw, eyes instinctively shutting upon the contact and your arms moving downwards to hold onto the edge of the chair.
unwillingly, you melt into the kiss like marshmallow over a bonfire between crackers.Â
it was gentle, like clouds in the sky and cotton candy on lips. he tasted sweet, with his lips buried between yours and his warmth seeping through his hands into your cheeks.
the anger and jealousy trickles into him with every passing second, and you marvel at his ability to have such immense control over your feelings. he didnât even need to do much for you to become his kitten.
the kiss feels like eternity until he pulls away, lids slowly opening to reveal his slightly lustful eyes now.
he knows youâre starting to feel the same.
âsay it, kitten, and weâll forget about takeaway.â
a harsh exhale hits the top of his lip from your nose, and some tiny bit of anger and jealousy inside you surfaces.
âwhat if i donât want to?â
he chuckles and tucks your hair behind your ear.
âwhy is it so hard for you to admit that you want me to yourself and the thought of having another woman in the picture kills you? you think i didnât see how you wanted to use eric to piss me off just now?â
literally nothing you do gets past this man, itâs annoying.
you try to turn your head but he holds your chin and brings it back to him,
âdonât avoid me, kitten. youâve been trying to get rid of me for 10 years... but look where that got us?â
his attention switches from your eyes to your neck, soft skin being littered with light kisses softens you even more.
âiâm waiting, kitten.â
a sigh that mustâve sounded like music to him rings in the air while his arms wrap themselves around your waist. your rear nearly gets lifted off the seat, so your left hand rests on his shoulder blade and the other finds his hair to tangle your fingers in.
âi hate you, do you know that?â
he smiles into your skin, and for a moment, it feels like pure bliss.
âbut if you let anybody flirt with you like that and you flirt back, iâll cut off your dick and make you watch it burn.â
one harsh suck evicts a gasp from you as you cringe under him. his strength channels through your spine as he lifts you off the seat and carries you to the sofa.Â
âthatâs my girl.â
the rough texture of your sofa greets the back of your neck when he shoves his lips between yours once again, this time more desperate.
neither of you were trying to hide how much you were feeling for one another; all you wanted to do was to kiss him all night long and have his hands roam your body like he didnât already know everything about it.
the kisses were desperate but slow and sensual, and the only piece of clothing thatâs come off was his shirt.
so you could run your hands all over his torso, drawing circles and caressing the muscles on his back atop the soft squelch of your tongues and lips pressing together every second.Â
his forearms were resting on the sofa on either sides of your ears, biceps perching his torso up so he wasnât crushing you under his weight.Â
your legs were apart on both sides of his hips and you could feel him fiddling with the button on your pants while he takes his time to press his bulge against your clothed core.
soft moans escape into his mouth, and you start to feel a heat gather in your underwear.
knock knock
hyunjae pulls away so fast, you register the emptiness on your lips before you process the sound.Â
knock knock
ây/n! are you at home? i thought i saw the backyard lights on!â
âoh, shit.âÂ
of all times to come, your parents had to come now?!
you push hyunjae off you while removing yourself from under him, grabbing his shirt from the ground and recklessly hurling it into his face.
âput on your fucking shirt--â
ây/n, we can hear you inside! are you okay?â
âyes, iâm fine! give me a moment!â you run to the glass door of your backyard and fix your hair.Â
hyunjae barely gets his t-shirt on when you run over to the front door, opening it with a tiny gap to reduce the chances of your parents walking in on your sworn enemy being in your apartment.
âhi mom... dad...â
both of them look at you weird, but the scent of fried chicken garners your attention.
âyouâre still in office attire-- have you eaten?âÂ
âi--â
âi knew it. come on, we bought fried chicken to share,â your mother takes a step forward and tries to push the door open.
âahH--â
she stops dead in her tracks, and your father shoots you a confused look.
âi-- well--â
âspit it out. the chickenâs gonna get cold if you donât speak any faster.â
âi have a visitor with me right now--â
âa visitor? oh, goodie! we can all share, iâm pretty sure we got more than enough--â
âitâs not really a good time, mom--â
ânonsense! i canât believe you invite others over and not your own parents!â
âwell, this was impromt--â
clang
âow!â
an awkward silence befalls between you and your parents. confused looks swamp their eyes and you struggle to contain your panic.
âis that--â
âthat sounds strangely familiar...â
oh, god.
âweâve heard this voice before, havenât we, darling?â your mother turns around to look at your father, and your face distorts into an ugly mess of emotions when a second clang rings through the house, followed by a low curse that you were pretty sure your parents could hear too.
âweâve definitely heard that before-- oh!â a light bulb appears above your fatherâs face, and you beg with your eyes not to say it--
âitâs that guy from your high school and college!â
your mother gasps, and she covers her mouth in shock.
âlee hyunjae?!â
âhe--â
âLEE HYUNJAE! ARE YOU IN THERE?!â
âmom--â
âLEE HYUNJAE, WE HAVE CHICKEN!!! YOU WANT SOME?!â
oh, good god.Â
this is going to be a long night.
your parents were sitting across you at the table, with hyunjae sitting by your side.Â
the air between the party was heavy, awkward, dense.Â
your father was confused but cheerful.Â
your mother was shocked but she just couldnât wipe that smug smile off her face whenever she gave hyunjae a piece of chicken.Â
âso... what brings you here?â
hyunjae looks like he was a deer caught in headlights when your mother takes a sip of soda after asking the question.
âi-- we... have a research project to work on.â
under the table, a familiar situation occurs to when you first had lunch with both eric and hyunjae.Â
his right hand finds your left thigh and he provides you a light squeeze, forcing you to clench down into the chicken you had in your mouth.Â
âoh,â your mother places the cup down. ây/n never told us sheâs in the research department.â
âitâs a side job, apart from working with patients.â
heat starts to pool under you, and a chill involuntarily runs up your spine. his fingers were digging into your flesh on your inner thigh, and its only making you think horrible thoughts even with your parents before you.
âi see. must be real busy then? we havenât seen her in like... what, eight weeks? since she started working at the hospital? the other day we wanted to drop by, but she said she was still working. it was a sunday, if iâm not wrong...â
âsunday? two weeks ago?â hyunjae side-eyes you when both your parents were looking at each other for confirmation.
your father pulls out his phone, nodding. âi believe it was sunday, i remember seeing the date when i texted her.â
âright, yeah. i saw her having takeaway in the pantry after dealing with a patient.â
great. now he knows i blew my parents off for him.
your thigh gets massaged over again, and it takes an immense amount of effort to swallow the moan that was already halfway up your neck. your heart was thumping so fast, you werenât too sure why.
but your father finishes the last piece of chicken he has on his plate, and your mother gets up to wash some of the cutlery and utensils.Â
hyunjaeâs palm finally leaves your thigh alone and you sigh with relief, watching your father peel little pieces of meat off the bones.Â
you watch in the glass panels of your backyard beyond your living room as hyunjae offers to help your mother wash the plates and cups, forgetting for a moment that your father was sitting right infront of you.
âwhat are you staring at?â
the white shirt hyunjae was wearing in the reflection loses your attention when your father catches your eyes wandering off axis.
âuh-- nothing!â
he turns around and looks at the glass panels.
âi thought i saw something in the backyard, thatâs all.â
âoh,â he responds emptily, turning around. âi thought my hair was in a mess or something.â
my life is going to shorten by like 50 years.
your parents offer hyunjae a ride home (without knowing his car was sitting right outside your residence), and you butt in by telling them that he has to stay because heâs not done with his part of the project.Â
luckily, they miss his little grope on your rear when you escort them to the front door.
âit was such a nice surprise to see you again after all these years, hyunjae.â
hyunjae gives your mother a sheepish smile, leaning against the door frame with your shoulders perpendicular to his chest.Â
âwe should meet up with your parents some time soon, it has been awhile. shouldnât we, honey?â
your father nods, pulling up his sleeve to check the time.
âwe have to go, honey. we both have a long day tomorrow.â
âokay,â she turns back to the both of you.Â
your relationship with your mother was never the best. but she looks at you with warm, soft eyes. eyes that said she was proud of you. eyes that said she was happy to be your mother.
and there was nothing more that could comfort you in that moment.
but your mother decides to ruin it, eventually.
âweâll be taking our leave now...â
âoh, and uh... your shirtâs inside out, hyunjae.â
the look on your fatherâs face changes like a switch and he laughs at you, turning on his heels and making his way down the steps to the car.Â
a cheeky grin spreads your motherâs face when the both of you turn to look at hyunjaeâs shirt, and the tag on the back was sticking out behind his neck.Â
she leaves without saying anything else, and they both wave to your embarrassed selves as the car drives off.
you wait until the car was no longer in sight, and then you choose to slam the door shut and give hyunjae a hard punch to his chest.
âyou had one job!â
âyou opened the door so fast!â
âit is a shirt-- how difficult is it to wear a shi-- oh, my god, they are going to call your parents. they are going to ask them out for a meal. we are going to need to go too. oh, my god--â
âkitten.â
âwhat?!â
âdo me a favour and shut up.â
the dim hallway reminds you of the first time he has his hand wrapped around your throat. hours after you removed the oncology report from his folder meant to be submitted to doctor kim.Â
you remember the fiery hatred in his eyes. the burning sensation of the wine you downed just seconds before you got the door open, thinking it was your mother.
but this time, his hands were on your waist, his physique gently pressing against yours against the wall behind you when he fits his lips between yours.Â
you remember the feeling of the cool wine hitting your skin after the arrogant smile you had on your face was completely wiped away by him pinning you to the kitchen island.Â
your palms greet his chest as they slide up over his shoulders, getting your fingers tangled in his hair feels like he was becoming part of you.
as if he wasnât already.
time?Â
one decade.
memories?Â
a million.
heartbreaks?Â
four in total, two each.
the first heartbreak, orchestrated by the enemy.
the second heartbreak, broken by a lover in silence.
death?
a better choice than being anywhere else besides in his arms.Â

Reiji Sakamaki X Reader
Hanahaki AU: where one begins to grow flowers in the lungs due to their strong romantic feelings towards another. The only cute is to have your feelings returned or a surgery that risks leaving you devoid of romantic, or in extreme cases all, emotion.
Gender neutral pronouns of they/them
A single gardenia, a symbol of secret love, lay in a pool of blood staining the hardwood floor of the lab. Looking down in disgust at the mess the vampire stood and wiped his mouth with a handkerchief before cleaning up the mess caused by his latest coughing fit.
Reiji was no fool, he was entirely aware of his condition and it's cause and he hated it. He hated the idea he had fallen for... them. The most recent sacrificial bride to enter mansion, having been a replacement after Yui was claimed fully by Ayato once they began a romantic relationship. Reiji and his superiority complex couldn't comprehend the idea that this mortal human had somehow caused his unbeating heart to pine for them. He had began coughing around 3 months after their arrival, back then it only being after long periods of time in their presence. Now the mere thought of them would have him buckled over and coughing up flowers clawing at his throat. He knew the risks of leaving his condition untreated and was set on creating a formula to rid him of this horrid ailment, after having disposed of the bloody flowers he was back to researching potential cures.
It was of course at this moment you knocked on the door, and against his better judgement he allowed you entry. "Hey Reiji-kun, or is it -san? this honorific system is rather confusing, anyway do you have any books of radiation poisoning? I would like to fact check some information and that's difficult without the internet." You the object of his most secretive affections asked politely and utterly naive to your effect on the vampire. He immediately turned away to his bookshelf grabbing the necessary books before placing them to the counter on his right, "You are correct in using -kun as we are in the same year and class, is that all Miss/Mr/(third NB option idk) (Y/L/N)?" He replied curtly remaining facing away from you as he discreetly covered his mouth to hold back the sea of petals begging to burst from his lips.
Sensing something was wrong (well done you have eyes) you slowly reached a comforting hand out before second guessing yourself and holding it against your chest. You walked closer to the attractive male timidly, "Reiji-kun are you alright? You seem troub-" you were cut off by the sound of Reiji hacking up quickly crumbling to the floor in pain blood and petals spewed from his mouth. You ran to his side rubbing his back to comfort the pain slightly and moving a nearby dustbin to catch the blood in. However Reiji shoved you away in favour of struggling alone, if the thought of you touching him made it worse how would the actual touch help? "Leave at once *cough* you will just *cough* make it *cough* worse." Reiji command through the hacking up of flowers.
"Why haven't you told them, if you've gotten close enough to love them then they obviously know how wonderful you are. Are-are you getting the surgery?" You stood with your hands over your mouth in shock. Your eyes wide and filled with concerned. "If you've made me, the person you torture almost daily, fall for you I'm certain you can get anyone to and not lose your ability to feel."
That immediately stopped his coughing fit. He stared down at the two blood stained gardenias and the surrounding scattered petals while trying to process your words. "You... you have feelings towards me...after everything I've said to you? Why? Don't you prefer Shu?" The poor vampire was confused, after being raised having his mother always favour his older brother he is convinced people like Shu more then him on principle. As much as he will refuse to admit it, he had gotten used to second place when it came to affection. Having heard enough of those rants to be able to roughly understand the situation, you smiled gently before walking back over and sitting on the floor beside his hunched over figure. You slowly placed your hand on his upper arm, unsure of his thoughts towards the contact.
"I do care for you Reiji, more then Shu. When you aren't being as cold as normal or punishing me or despising me for being mortal... you're very fun to spend time with. You play chess with me and let me stay in your study and read while you experiment. Of course when you later drug me with them I don't mind as much because at least I get to hide away from the triplets the rest of the time" Reiji felt a wave of guilt after hearing those words, although you'll never be told that directly. At least not until he's gotten practice..."My point is, you're special to me Reiji because you're you, not because you're smart, or rich, or because you're related to Shu. It's because you're you, the socially awkward dork who collects fancy tea sets and refuses to let us get wifi even though this would've made getting you the surgery or in touch with your crush faster. Now let's go find her." You stood up dusting off your skirt and began walking towards the door.
Only to stop as chuckling began, a deep and foreign sound from the ravenette (is it black or dark purple?). "You're still dense as ever I see, how I fell for you I still don't know," Grabbing your arm gently and pulling you back to floor between his legs into a hug. His head buried in your neck and his entire body shaking with relief. Then you put your arms around him and Reiji thought he'd died and entered heaven. He never got hugged as a child and shut out anyone who tried when older, and now he was experiencing one for pretty much the first time and loving it. Then you kissed his forehead and he started to cry, but if I describe that I'm fairly certain I'm going to find something in my tea.
Of course that was a lie, he knew parts of why he loved you, and was close to actually understanding the rest. But he's an emotionally repressed mess this is the best you're getting for now. He was thanking himself for not letting you get wifi here yet, the notion of having a surgery to remove him of these emotions a horrid thought when the warmth of your love was within arms reach the entire time.
#reiji sakamaki#diabolik lovers#reiji sakamaki x reader#someome get this child friends#he needs tea hugs and love rn#there really aren't many DL tags I can think of#I'm a bad writer it's been like centuries since I've posted

Master
{The following is a retelling of RP that occurred largely between Vynlorin and @cerusaniduskbinder with a few points from @aredhelvaltieri and @barirnshadowwind, and @sparrow-of-arnudâ and @nivathostinâ for mentions.Â
Very little has been altered from the original RP only for the sake of storytelling flow.}
[A simple parchment was posted on the notice board in the late afternoon. Very few words were written, but the words posted there were large and elegant and demanded attention. The seal of House Shandaumath sat at the bottom of the notice.]
WANTED: Hemomancer
Any who can provide reliable information on the whereabouts of a hemomancer will be handsomely rewarded. Further inquiries should be redirected to Master Vynlorin Shandaumath.
Search with haste. Time is of the essence.
...
âMaster Vynlorin. When you have time I have information you are looking for.â
Cerusaniâs voice rang out through the communication device that Vynlorin hated so much. He set aside the scroll of hemomancy that he had been researching and clicked the little button on the device attached beneath his shoulder pads.
âI have time now.â
âI am finishing up an appointment. I will be available in about ten minutes.â
He pursed his lips and wrinkled his nose. Another meeting with Cerusani, and it would end with just as much disappointment as the rest. But he couldnât risk not seeing her. The fate of the sickly Ithildir depended on this hunt.
âFind me in Thornwood.â
Vynlorin left his books and scrolls in an organized mess and retreated from his study only to greet Nivathostin who had been standing outside as patiently as ever. The man had few interests and fewer words, and the master of the house had grown fond of him.
âCome, Nivathostin. We have a guest tonight.â As if being beckoned like a dog, the blue-haired renâdorei following behind his master, and the pair made way into the dining hall for preparations.
....
It wasnât long before Cerusani made her way into the room with classical Cerusani confidence. Her shoulders were back with her head held high even though she knew who she was meeting.
âMaster Vynlorin. I made it here as quickly as I could. Thankfully I was just across the way and not in the city.â She did not dare take a seat anywhere as she waited for the man to acknowledge her presence.
The table was empty except for the bottle of Dalaran Red and two glasses beside it. One had already been filled and teased by the master of the house while the other remained cold and empty in anticipation of the coming guest. Aside from the usual servants that stood idle along the walls, Vynlorin was not alone. Next to his seat stood a thin renâdore who, although far too skinny, seemed in decent health. The man boasted short blue hair and steady eyes that were unwavering in their inspection upon Cerusani when she arrived, but Vynlorin met her with a curious gaze as he waved to the empty seat nearest to her.
âOf course. Have a seat.â
A servant peeled himself from the wall with quick feet and reached for the bottle of wine and empty glass, pouring the woman her drink as she settled in.
Cerusani wasted no time in taking the offered seat with grace as she sat upon the wood which made a small noise. The servant who had poured the wine offered it up to Cerusani and she took it by the stem. âThank you.â The two small words were offered to the servant before she began to swirl the delectable wine that they both enjoyed. However, Cerusani did not look at the wine but instead flitted her violet eyes between Master Vynlorin and the unknown man.
âIs he the one you need the hemomancer for? I thought it was Ithildir. That would be odd though as I told Ithildir what I knew two nights ago.â A brow arched as she shifted around the thoughts within her head. Politely she took a sip of the wine.
Vynlorin quirked a brow. âDid you? So youâve already discussed it with Ithildir while he made no mention of it to me.â His finger gently tapped against the glass, and he entirely ignored the question she posed to him. After a moment of silent thought, he sipped and continued.
âWhat did he say about it?â
Cerusani sucked in the side of her cheek for a moment, contemplating.
âHe said nothing but thank you. I gave him two names. Baron Herke Kruger and Lord Tion Harrowmire.â She relaxed back into the chair as she crossed one leg atop the other. âBaron Kruger once told me that Harrowmire had asked about learning hemomancy after a House of Nobles meeting. That is all I have. Though since it is frowned upon and illegal within Stormwind I am unsure if either are practitioners. It is better a lead than anything else.â
The wine within her glass swirled as she eyed the gaunt unknown man. âDid he want a glass of wine perhaps?â
Vynlorin twisted his lips and pursed them in displeasure as he received the information, but they soon pressed into a line at the attention sent toward the other man. A dismissive hand waved it off as Vynlorin looked up at the other who still remained as still and steady as ever.
âPerhaps Nivathostinâs biggest flaw is his tongue. He is a whiskey man and scorns wine whenever I offer it to him.â
There was no hiding the surprise on Cerusaniâs face as she set the wine down on the table. Her eyes directly stared at Nivathostin as if seeing a made up story one only hears about once in a few moons.
âNivathostin. Aredheleâs Nivathostin? I thought he was dead. Aredhele has always spoken of him as if he was dead. Not that she did it often. One time.â The words were low and wonderous.
Nivathostin couldnât help but sneer at the name while his nose raised high as if he had just been insulted. âPerhaps it was always her goal,â he mused quietly with malice thick in his voice.
Vynlorin returned his gaze to his glass and allowed a snake-like grin to spread wide against his lips before chiming in. âI wasnât aware you knew of him, Cerusani. How curious.â The master then motioned for Nivathostin to sit while waving the servants forward. âDo get a bottle of whiskey for Nivathostin here.â
With the command, the younger men scurried to the liquor cabinet, retrieved a dark bottle, and brought it to the table where they poured it into a glass and offered it to the blue-haired man taking a seat.
Cerusani finally broke her gaze away from Nivathostin and brought the eyes down to her wine glass. The ripples from the swirling radiated outward to the edges as she thought.
âI do not know much. Just the name. I know better than to ask more right now. Even if I did you would not tell me, Master Vynlorin.â As if the words parched her throat like Tanaris, Cerusani brought the wine to her lips drinking a healthy portion of it. As the glass was brought down she shifted in her seat, seeming as if she was no longer comfortable in the room. âIthildir is dying. He had me run across Stormwind last night to fetch a potion for him. He is in no condition to fight on Sunday.â
Vynlorin shook his head at Cerusani, and Nivathostin fell silent once more as he sipped at the sweet escape of whiskey now snuggled within his hand.
âNivathostin has had a rough few years, Cerusani, and we will do our best to make sure heâs comfortable. Letâs leave this as our little secret for now, yes?â The warlockâs predatory gaze fell heavily against the woman as his own silent threat, and the look only softened after he sipped back another dose of poison. âIthildir is dying, yes, which is why itâs important that we find someone or something that can cure him quickly. You would do well not to fight him just as I must stay my own hand until he can recover.â
Cerusani knew the gaze that he cast upon her with the words of warning. Silence fell between the trio for a while with the only sound coming from Cerusani being the tapping of her nails atop the table.
âYou want me to keep a secret for you. What do I get out of it? Youâve cast me aside. You call me a cat. You call me a disappointment. What do I get from this arrangement?â She rolled her shoulders back trying to give her the look of confidence she had when entering the room. âFrom your request I surmise that Lady Aredhele does not know he is here. Perhaps no one but you knows.â A brow arched as the words were pointed directly at the man.
Nivathostin paused his sip as he stared steadily at Cerusani, his breath remaining stuck in his lungs as he awaited the masterâs response. Vynlorin too paused as his gaze fell into slits at the dare, and it was as if the room grew colder with a devilish curl of his lips.
âQuite simply, Cerusani, you get to keep your freedom.â
Cerusani set her wine glass down atop the table.
âI want more than that.â
Arms crossed beneath her chest as the two seemed to be in a stalemate. âYou can do better, Vynlorin.â This was the first time in months that she had dropped the respect of his title.
All the servants in the room froze, stuck as statues as the tension in the air gripped their rapidly-beating hearts. Nivathostin too could feel the wrath of the master despite his innocence in the conversation. Vynlorin curled that devilish grin wider, and his wicked thoughts flashed before his eyes and danced in his mind as he considered his next move.
âCerusani. I understand you enjoy being beaten. Perhaps you would like to demonstrate for everyone in this room what itâs like to be the subject of a lesson in disobedience.â
Cerusani should have known better and did know better but still she doubled down.
âNo. I do not think I will be the subject of one of your lessons.â
The defiance flickered in her eyes as she took a moment to look from the Master to Nivathostin. Her right hand uncurled from underneath her chest and dipped into her pocket. As the hand came up from the table she held tightly onto her small communication device, finger pressed upon the button. âLady Aredhele.â
âYes, Cerusani?â Lady Aredheleâs voice rang out.
She took her finger off the button and cocked her head to the side once more looking at Master Vynlorin. âYou can do better. Pick your next words carefully because there are different pieces to this puzzle I could pull out and say to Lady Aredhele right now.â
There was no going back. Cerusani had put this into motion.
Vynlorin squinted at the device as he heard the womanâs words ring out against his own ear from beneath his pauldrons. A soft sigh flooded from his nostrils, but he didnât pity the womanâs fate that she had just sealed.
âVery well.â
And then, with a gentle utter beneath his breath, the shadows beneath Cerusaniâs seat wriggled to life and crawled up the back of her chair only to wrest the womanâs neck backwards with its long, gangly claws. The shadowfiend crawled with tendrils and inches of nails that fashioned into claws, and it sought to squeeze the air from her neck while threatening to pierce the flesh. Nivathostin watched with dark eyes that were far too curious to hold sympathy for the woman, but the servants all sent their gazes downward and held their frightened breaths.
Cerusani pressed the button of the communication device. With all that she had left in her she squeezed out a sound.
âNIVAT-â
The word did not finish as the clawed shadows dug deeper, crushing her throat even more. With that the device fell out of her hand as the womanâs body began to grow limp.
When the radio clicked on again, the sound of broken glass was heard. Then, all was silent. Too silent. The radio connection opened after a long pause and the melodic buzz of static replaced Aredheleâs voice. There was too much emotion. Too many thoughts rushed to her mouth and she spat out with all the passion she could muster. âWhere. Is. He?â
Vynlorin slammed his glass against the table and pushed himself to his feet with more fury than she would have ever seen before. His face grew dark like the very demons he commanded, and a quick flick of his wrist snuffed out every torch in the dining hall.
âCerusani.â
That one single word dragged against the infinite dark of the shadows that now wrapped around them with the weight of every vile thought that had ever crossed the warlockâs mind. Nivathostin inhaled a deep breath that hitched itself in his throat with all the others who were unfortunate enough to be trapped in the cage with the beast and its prey.
âI am so disappointed in you.â
The womanâs eyes fluttered for a moment, taking in the darkness as it came. The little breathing that she was able to manage began to slow, become shallower. Her body limper with each passing second.
"It seems she has not responded. Would you like for me to find her, Lady Valtieri?" Barirnâs voice called out from the device.
âNo no, that is alright. I will find her myself tomorrow.â
The shadowfiend grew stronger in the darkness, but its life was short-lived and soon dispersed into the rest of the room only to be replaced by the warlockâs own hand wrapped tightly around her neck. He held her firmly but allowed her breaths to trickle through so she could feel every word he uttered against her ear, his breath hot and heavy beside her.
âYou could have shown me that you were capable of doing anything right, but now youâll just be another pet to hang on my wall.â
The darkness flooded through her nostrils and reached deep into her soul, transcending flesh and breaking the barrier between life and death. His other fingers reached into his robes and pinched an empty soul shard that now glowed with anticipation for its new prisoner, and he muttered a dark and vile language as the ritual continued.
Everything within Cerusani began to twist and ache as her very source of life broke apart from her while the warlock reeled it out, slowly, slowly, until it screeched when it broke into the air and was dragged into the little shard. With nothing to see, the rushing wind that whirled within the room struck hard against the dulled senses of everyone within it, and the cold of the Nether skittered like static across their flesh.
Cerusani felt every little part of her body as Vynlorin worked his magic upon her. Her long lashes fluttered open to see the darkness of the room while the violet orbs looked as if the woman was in the depths of pure agony. Each passing moment Cerusaniâs soul left her and entered the shard within Vynlorinâs grasp until there was nothing of it left inside her. Her throat beneath his hand moved as she swallowed to get out anything but nothing came.
The thoughts. The words. Everything stuck within Cerusani as her eyes fluttered closed once more. Nivathostin shuddered at the sensation of the Twisting Nether breaking through into the room, and the familiar touch of death and lost souls made his stomach churn.
Once the shard had fully sealed the soul within it, it sparked in a brilliant flash of light before falling into a soft purple glow that revealed the suffering soul within it. The anger mingling with the unnatural magics gave rise to Vynlorinâs own nausea, but he ignored it as adrenaline still pulsed within him and forced his hand to backhand the woman who had riled him so.
âYou are no longer a student. No longer an acquaintance. You are a worthless animal who will learn her place.
The backhand from Vynlorin sent Cerusaniâs slumping body to the stone of the floor. For a long while she laid on the cool stone before she began to come about. Her body convulsed as her skin began to glisten. The first attempt at righting her body failed with her body crumpling to the ground once more.
A retching sound came from her throat even with it being so dry. The dark floor was spewed with the wine she had consumed, and a mixture of her dinner of stew one of the villagers had made for her. The stench just before her nose prompted her to try to get up once more. Her weakened body managed to sit up as she looked around, finally settling on Vynlorin.
âYo-.â
She had to pause a moment.
âTake everything.â
It made no sense perhaps to the men before her but it did to Cerusani. Shaking hands grasped at the chair trying to pull her to her feet, and after a few moments Cerusani was upon legs that felt like a baby deer.
âCa-can I go now?â The view of the woman now was scant but a memory of the woman who had walked into the room with confidence.
Vynlorin stepped through the darkness, pushing the chair with his foot so he could take another step closer. That wicked hand rushed to the back of Cerusaniâs neck to slam her head down against the table like a prisoner beneath his grip.
âYou will address me properly.â
While keeping her head steady with one hand, the warlock returned the filled shard to its place in his robes before flicking that wrist to spark the torches alive again. The darkness fled with the flames so that Cerusani could see her captor looming above her.
Cerusani felt the impact of the wooden table against her face. Once more her stomach began to retch but there was no longer anything to give. Her body radiated with shivers as she looked up to the imposing man she had goaded into being the demon she knew lived somewhere in him. With the grasp of his hand on the back of her neck it felt as if she was his puppet when the words came out next.
âMa-may I go now, M-m-master Vynlorin?â It was a struggle as every fiber of Cerusani ached.
Vynlorin kept her there a moment longer as he considered her plea.
âNo.â
He responded with the same confidence that she had uttered to him when she damned herself to this fate. âGuards!â he barked, and the two men who had been guarding the outside of the door rushed in. âTake her to the dungeon. Iâll be along shortly.â
Each bulky man gripped an arm and yanked Cerusani with them, seeking to drag her along if her own feet couldnât keep up. Vynlorin brushed the filth of the woman from his hands and waved Nivathostin to follow along.
Cerusani could not keep up as her feet dragged across the floor.
âMaster Vynlorin. I wo-wonât say anything. Pleas-please.â
The words were the last things that left her lips as one of the guards smacked her on the back of her head, and she fell silent while they descended the stairs.

âI donât see him.â the young scientist voices; heâs a skinny thingâtall and lankyâwith the demeanor of an excitable child. You follow the flick of his curious eyes over your shoulder, your gaze automatically meeting Kaiâs through the glass. Heâs well hiddenâhis gold and green complexion, the green leaves growing out of his shoulders, wrapping delicately around his arms and torso, the roots wrapped around his ankles, the dirt on his cheekâhe blends into the dome around him, almost invisible to the human eye. If it werenât for his laser-like focus on you, his golden irises catching in the light, you mightâve had a harder time locating him.
You clear your throat, breaking eye contact as quickly as you made it, âHeâs there.â You open your mouthâready to get this over withâwhen another voice cuts through, âI see him! Look, heâs right there.â the girl reaches forward, as if to touch the glass. Murmurs of shock and barely concealed excitement fill the tiny room and, suddenly, youâve got a migraine.
âWoah! Heâs an alien.â a much shorter, rounder intern exclaims.
âKaiââ you cut short, silently reprimanding yourself for the slip of tongue, âSubject K is a unique case, heâs not foreign to this planet. He was once human.â
âHe was human?â the same intern questions, incredulously.
âDid you not read the case files you were presented with before todays introduction?â you canât help but snap in reply, frustration bubbling beneath the surface. Youâre a scientist, not a babysitter, and definitely not a teacher. How and why did you get stuck doing this? You resist the urge to roll your eyes.
âCan he...hear us?â a quiet voice pulls you out of your thoughts, cutting through the building frustration. And suddenly you feel ashamed. Youâre not typically a cold person; you were once a young, fresh graduateâa wet behind the ears internâjust like them. Over-excited, curious and unintentionally dumb at times. You take a deep breath, center yourself, before shaking your head. âThe room is soundproof, military glass, but he can see you.â
âWhat if he gets out? What if he hurts someone?â the same meek voice questions. You can now see the owner. Itâs a girl, sheâs shorter than you, thin and obviously very nervous. Sweat gathers at the top of her lip.
âThere is no reason to be scared. Subject K is a product of an experiment gone wrong.â you interject, hoping to calm the young girls nerves. âHe who creates a poison, also has the cure. He who creates a virus, also has the antidote. He who creates chaos, also has the ability to create peace. Any problems created by the left hand of man, can also be solved with the right.â you trail off, finding yourself quoting your late professorâa magnificent scientist, a man you look up to.
âI donât understand?â her tall, lanky companion stares at you, his head cocked to the right.
âFor he who manifests anything, also has the ability to destroy it.â you whisper, suddenly overwhelmed with the meaning behind what your late professor was saying. You didnât really understand it at the time, but now you do. âIs that what youâll do? Destroy him?â a smaller male questions, taking a step forward towards the glass. And you suddenly feel extremely nauseous. The idea of anyone, your boss, the government, ordering the terminationâthe exterminationâof Kai...
You shake your head in an attempt to abort the train of thought, heat gathering behind your eyes. âI donât...I donât know.â you croak, your throat burns.
âAnyways, shall we begin?â gripping the clipboard in your hands, you gesture to a series of X-rays directly opposite the viewing window. âThe gut is the seat of all feeling. Polluting the gut not only cripples your immune system, but also destroys your sense of empathy, the ability to identify with other humans.â you keep your eyes steady on the group of interns you are speaking toâdespite the consistent itch of Kaiâs eyes lingering on your skin. âBad bacteria in the gut creates neurological issues. For instance, through a series of tests, weâve found that autism can be cured by detoxifying the bellies of young children.â
âWait, so youâre saying that people who think that feelings come from the heart are wrong?â the shorter girl questions from the back of the room, her initial nerves completely forgotten about. There is a pause in writing, the sound of pen on paper dissipating.
âIâm saying that itâs scientifically proven that the gut is where you feel the loss of a loved one first. It's where you feel pain and a heavy bulk of your emotions. It's the central base of your entire immune system. If your gut is loaded with negative bacteria, it affects your mind. Yes, your heart is the seat of your conscience. But if your mind is corrupted, it affects your conscience all the same.â your voice is steady, almost monotone. The subject at hand coming second nature to you. In hindsight, this is probably why you were pickedâyou could teach this in your sleep.
âThink of the Solar system; the heart is the Sun. The gut is the Moon. The pineal gland is Neptune, and your brain and nervous systemâyour 5 sensesâare Mercury. What affects the moon or sun affects the entire universe within. So, if you poison the gutââ you trail off, eyes connecting with Kaiâs once again. ââit affects your entire nervous system, your sense of reasoning, your senses altogether. Which is what you can see clearly here with Subject K.â you gesture briefly to Kai, flicking your wrist in his direction and dropping your eyes away from his intense gaze.
âBut I donât understand the manifestation of that bacteria. Flowers? Plants? Vines? In the human body? Growing out of the nervous system? What did they do to him? What kind of experiment was this? Does it hurt him?â the taller intern balks, confusion written all over his face.
âYou donât have the clearance for the answers to half of those questions.â you reply, brazenly. Your eyes canât help but fall down to Kaiâs legsâthe vines rooted into his skinâgrown from the inside out. Dried blood and dirt caked to his shins, his shoulders.
âThere are people who are destined to taste only the poison in things, any surprise is a painful surprise and any experience a new occasion for torture.â you clench your jaw, the same heat behind your eyes reappearing. âIf someone were to say to me that such suffering has subjective reasons, related to the individual's particular makeup, I would then ask is there an objective criterion for evaluating suffering?â You look back at the group of interns, making eye contact with each one. âWho can say with precision that Subject K suffers more than you or I do? There is no objective standard because suffering cannot be measured according to the external stimulation or local irritation of the organism, but only as it is felt and reflected in consciousness.â Itâs textbook and the science driven part of your brain can rationalize and justify any pain he might feelâfor the better of humankind. However, your heart says other wise. The empathetic, emotion driven part of your brain canât help but plead for lack of pain. For mercy. Your nausea returns.
It isnât until the last intern has left the room, closing the door softly behind him, that you allow yourself to outwardly reflect what you are feeling inside: exhaustion, defeat, fear.
You curl into yourself, shoulders dropping, head hanging low; for a moment you forget who you are, where youâre at, who is watching you. A sigh escapes your lips before youâre even aware of what youâre doing. Coming back into yourself, you straighten. Your eyes trail back to Kai nervously, heart still thumping erratically in your chest. His golden eyes somehow look darker. As if he could truly hear youâno, itâs soundproof glass, thereâs no way. You shake your head once again, trying to rid yourself of any doubts and turn to exit the room.
âYou are not coming in today?â his voice carries, a low baritone, as if he was right there beside you. You freeze. Slowly turning around, your wide eyes catch his. âNo, I wonât.â your eyes trail back to the door, your nerves picking up at the thought of someone walking by and hearing your conversation; a conversation you werenât supposed to participate in.
âWhy? You always come in.â he takes a step forward, the part of his body once hidden in plain sight coming into full view. You instinctively take a step back, your body reacting as if there is no glass separating you.
âYou know why...last time...last time you touched me. Youâre not supposed to do that. You⊠you whispered things in my ear, things I never wouldâve expected to affect me the way they did.â you suddenly find yourself exasperated. âYouâre a walking, talking ecosystem and yet Iâm the one like a leaf fluttering in the windâwhen you zig, I zag. You talk and I jump. You walk and I turn into a blithering idiot. I admit it, when I find myself near youâŠâ you didnât have the courage to finish the sentence. You werenât suppose to talk to him, to let him touch you. You couldnât let yourself get attached, and yet here you were. With a sudden lump in your throat, you added: âI donât want to hope, and I certainly donât want to delude myself. Damn it, the thought of deluding myself terrifies me!â
âI think I know what your problem is.â he was right in front of the glass now, the palm of his hand pressed up against it. His eyes radiating life, his expression incredibly deprivedâlike he was the plant and you were the water he so desperately needed. Just out of reach. âAnd what would that be?â you swallow at the sudden proximity, you hadnât seen him approach so swiftly. He offered a sly smile, his golden eyes piercing you in place. âYouâre hopelessly in love with me.âÂ
âAbsolutely not.â you disagree wholeheartedly, a part of you panicked at the thought, âIf anything, youâre the one in love with me!â You donât know why you say it, maybe to try and one-up him. Kai has never shown any direct interest in you personally, other than that one timeâif anything he seems quite indifferent around you. His foreign stare following you closely around the room when youâre working.
âI am.â his confession almost knocks you off your feet, he spoke like it was obvious. âYou've driven me crazy. You've caused me considerable trouble and I've contemplated ending your life twice since I've known you." his warm breath hits the glass, sending a shiver down your spine. The danger behind his words, the implication, sends your heart straight into your throat. âBut youâve slipped under my skin, invaded my blood and seized my heart.â âThat sounds more like a poison than a person,â was all you could say. His words had both shocked and scared you. âExactly,â he replied, as if it was apparent. âYou have poisoned me.â đżđżđżđżđżđżđżđżđżđżđżđżđżđżđżđżđżđżđżđżđżđżđżđżđżđż
