I thought parking would be hard. I shoved my underwear in my pocket. I cursed my eyes and my dreams. I was a fraud. I felt confused how others could not easily see that. I resented my contentedness. I resented words I couldn't use fluidly, but knew the meanings off. I felt the beer belly of my story swell. I asked for 20 dollars at the Gas Station. I did not make eye contact with the clerk. Half way. I drove past my old job: Music and Arts. I remembered my coworker Dani. She told me stories about past jobs. She had love in her eyes. I did not resent it. I watched the sunset spoil over the Bubble Tea place. How does anyone care about a strip? Sidewalk crumbles and tree lawns brown. How do I use the word stalwart? Thunderstorms boomed that Summer too. I miss the reckoning of it. How functionality sometimes destroys functionality. Whatever is at the root of being human. If we had the answers, wouldn't humanity be the same because we are limited to our bodies? Would the answer make us want to stay or get out. I imagined permanence. I imagined an anchor into my asshole, which I just got fucked. I drove to Division street. I passed my best friend's old road where I drove to her house. Plainfield Ave has four red light stops. There is the Burger King where the shooting took place. Lights splintered in the distance nearing New Brunswick. I found parking easily. I felt afraid of the people in NB because I am a little evil. I went through an alley and around the back. I douched my ass again. I felt something loose in my car. I tidied my ass with coconut soap. I smelt mouth wash. I looked at nothing, tried. I dropped my phone stupidly. We strip immediately. I only went for the Poppers. The drug accelerates God. It feels stupid to say. I feel like such a man talking about drugs. It didn't do much. Pleasure was limp as ever. The more you do the less you feel. It is a rule like Winter or the orbit of Earth. I got on my back and it hurt. He had a kind face and voice. Almost not enough. He wanted to get fucked too. I said no. I enjoy the relief of not being hard. I enjoy the relief of not needing to perform. I kept inhaling poppers. I avoid actually writing by short sentences. That feel true tonight. My brain hovers over repetition because I don't know better. Do not know better at all. He turned me over. Sofia Vergara was laughing. He shoved himself deeper and it hurt. I begged to myself. This is what it feels like to be loved. This is the martyrdom of gayness. Isn't that nice? It was a squinting discomfort, my hands gripped the sheet without asking me. This was closeness in motion. In missionary, I felt the longness of his back. This was a man extracting pleasure from me. This is what it feels like for a man to enjoy you. I was limp like sleet. I was as satisfying as one inch of snow that edges the world with beauty. I was that awful Winter wetness. His white board said: Pray. You got this. It's Malachi Time. We fucked for 12 minutes. I needed to find the poppers. It stopped working. I was naked for 1 minute after. I shoved my underwear into my pocket. I had the douche in the other. I left the way I came. I drove automatically back here. I said, at least write a few things about what you know. I knew not to share it. I knew I was no one and not okay with that.

Your head was light and brain struggling to make any connections to the rest of your body. Your back rested against the dining room chair as you let whatever Jo fed to you get mushy in your mouth. Caroline had fed you some of her blood but your headache remained. Everything about today had went south and now everyone was just waiting on the edges of their chairs for something to happen and just wrap up the gift of shittiness to this very bad day. Unfortunately for you, you just so happened to be the fucking bow.
"I thought I told you to stay away from her!" Bonnie snapped in the living room at the brown haired siphon. You couldn't hear the arguments happening in the other room solely because you were too busy being coddled by Jo and Caroline to make sure you wouldn't be able to hear the scolding Kai was receiving in the other room.
Bonnie never saw what you did whenever she looked at him. In her mind, you were just another one of his victims. He couldn't have had any good intentions with you. Kai Parker never had good intentions of any kind. He's selfish, and evil, and cruel, and there's no way in hell she was going to let him keep ruining your life after what happened today. Everyone knew who he was and what he did, everyone saw how dangerous he could be... except you just refused to acknowledge it. Truthfully, she didn't know whether to direct all her anger at him for hurting you or put all her disappointment on you for letting it get this far.
"Bonnie I swear, it's not like that! I never meant to hurt her, it just happened and I couldn't control it-"
"I swear to god I will kill you right now, and I wouldn't even need magic to do it." She growled.
He couldn't understand what made her so angry. Obviously he never meant to siphon so much out of you, really he didn't mean to siphon you at all. He was just planning on telling from Bonnie and the bracelet you gave him with a bit of your magic in it for emergencies and hoped the whole spell would work out fine.
"It was an accident!"
"Like hell it was!" Everyone stood around... watching... waiting... hoping. Hoping he would step out of line just once so they could rip his head off. "Nothing with you is an accident, Kai!"
"I would never intentionally hurt her, Bonnie! Believe or not I'm still capable of human emotions!" He scoffed, nothing the vampires surrounding him ready to pounce at any given moment, and with his anger levels rising they were about to have a field day.
"Of course you would, Kai! You hurt everyone who's close with you! Whether it's literally or metaphorically you always find a reason that benefits you, that justifies you hurting someone else! That's just who you are! You want nothing good with her, Kai! She's a good person, just leave her alone!" Bonnie growled, but Kai wasn't going to give in so easily.
"I've changed, Bonnie!"
"Changed into what? An even better liar? Because for an actual second there, Kai, I really believe you stayed in mystic falls just to live the life you never got to!" She fired.
"That's-"
"You know, if you wanted to make us even considering liking you, you should've moved. Far, far away from here, somewhere where you can't fucked up our lives enough for us to continue to have another fucking reason to hate you!" His shoulders dropped, hurting filling him to the brim. Usually he wouldn't let things like words get to him. She was upset with him, people say things they don't mean when they're upset... only she would've said this even in her happiest moments of life. She did hate him, and she had every reason to.
"She makes me a better person- When I'm I'm with her I want to be a better Person, Bon!" He defended himself. He knew the real reason he was with her, to him it was quite obvious. She made him feel as though the world wasn't out to get him. She could stop a nightmare before it even began with just a breathing the way she does. She made the best cupcakes, even though her cooking skills were mediocre, magic could fix everything. She made him smile without even doing anything just from the warm giddy feeling in his body when he's around her. Y/N Bennett... she was the only person to exist to make Malachi Parker feel like he deserved to live.
"Bullshit! You're just using her-"
"It isn't like that!" He snapped, causing the argument to halt for a few seconds.
"Really? Then tell me, Kai. What is it? Is it because she's my cousin? Is that why you're interested in her? To get back at me in your own disgusting twisted way? Or is it because of the blood? I bet her Bennett blood would come in real handy just in case-"
"No! I wouldn't do that to her-"
"Or is it because you're just so desperate for someone who actually feels like a friend that you decided to keep her around? Hmm? Maybe it's because after 18 years holed up in that prison word, you finally came to the realization that there is no possible way you could ever be loved. That you deserve to be alone for the rest of eternity. But all of a sudden, here she is, Precious y/n Bennet, the only person who is willingly to search for even a shred of good in you!" She spat. Everyone around watching guards fell as the watched Kai slowly become less tense. His shoulders falling slowly, the will the defend himself leaving his body along with his will to live, embarrassment and anger rushing through his veins, but a small part of him kept him in the room and not on his way back to his apartment. "Let me tell you something, Kai. Maybe this you can finally get it through your head." Bonnie feeling confident enough to take a step towards the stunned looking Siphon. "Not even a Bennett witch is strong enough to fix the broken, unlovable, vile person you really are. And if you truly, by some fucking miracle have a beating heart in your chest, if you've actually let her change you for the better, then you know she's better off without you. We both know that you don't deserve her in any way, shape, or form... so just let her go. Find someone else to ruin and leave her alone."
It felt as if all the oxygen in his body had left. His heart stopped pumping blood through his veins, and slowly and painfully he felt as if he was desiccating on the insides. He hadn't even noticed the tear that had escaped while he was being scolded.
Both you and Jos head turn as you hear a muffled scream that sounded like it came from Bonnie. You tried to stand by Jo eased you back down, shaking her head as if everything was all right. You couldn't hear much of the conversation going on in the other room, but you knew if it was enough to make Bonnie angry then it was never good. And Bonnie in their with Kai... was enough to make her wanna take out the entire town of Mystic Falls.
"I feel fine Jo, I'm good." You reassure her, standing on your own again against her advice.
She knew what was going on in there... they've been going at it since before you even regained consciousness. She wasn't worried about you not being able to stand on your own, she was worried about you overbearing the heavy conversation happening in the other room.
"Maybe we should head to a clinic or something, you did hit your head pretty hard!" She tries quickly but you shaking your head.
"Caroline gave me her blood, I'll be fine." You responded, looking to the blood who seemed to be in total shock and not at all paying attention to either of you. "I think I'm just going go home and sleep, promise I won't do anything to crazy." You sent Jo a soft smile, tilting your head at Caroline in confusion but ultimately ignored it. Maybe it was some weird vampire sensory thing.
"You should take the back door!" Jo tried again, just to keep you from walking back into the living room.
"I would..." you narrowed your eyes at the dark haired doctor. "But my keys are by the front door." You spoke, walking towards the living room before Jo could make any more excuses. You caught on fast, but really you did just want to go home.
"Wait No-" Jo stood quickly, Caroline finally snapping back into consciousness. By the time she could truly think, you were already walking through the doors leading into the living room. There was still a bit of your blood on the carpet, you knew Damon was going to bitch about that later so you figured you get out why you still could.
Well... that's what you were planning to do before you stopped just to notice all of the eyes planted on you. You first assumed that it was just them just surprised at your speedy recovery... but the tear running down your boyfriends cheek made you rethink a bit. Kai never cried. No matter what or ho he was feeling, there was not a thing in this world that he would ever let get to him. Maybe he was just so worn out from the spell too that he didn't even feel himself tearing up. The whole room felt tense, and even Jo and Caroline looked like this in the Kitchen.
"What's going on?" You felt your own body tense a bit as Kai's eyes fell down to the floor.
"nothin'" Kai mumbled, voice shaky. Your eyes narrowed with obvious disbelief. His voice was kind of small, and he couldn't even look at you. He had so many thoughts racing through his head he had no idea what to do.
"Why don't i believe that..." you spoke, mostly to yourself. "I was just about to head home." You mentioned wearily. "Are you coming or are you just gonna stand there awkwardly?" You asked, half joking and half wanting to know what had him so actually upset.
"Uhm," he spoke looking back up, eyes immediately attracted to Bonnie before looking back to you. He felt her glare burning into the side of his head, her whole rant repeating itself in his mind over and over again. "Yeah, yeah, I'll drive." He nodded, turning around just so he wouldn't have to look at you again. Before he could walk, Bonnie had grabbed his arm. Rather tightly, and oddly to be honest. She usually avoided any sort of interaction with him, so even an arm touch was a weird sight to you.
All she sent was a simple look that seem to have him shaken down to his boots before she let him go. Her eyes falling back to you. She sent a smile, before just walking away. Not a word. Just silence. It was weird, no one else had much to say either, just weird looks on their faces and more silence to give. You ignored them though, just wanting to get home.
"Uhm, okay." You responded to the silence, shaking out the bad feeling from your mind before walking through the living room. You grabbed you jacket off the couch before walking over to Kai. You reached your hand up to touch his arm but he shrugged you off, walking towards the front door without even look at you. Was he mad? What could he possibly have been mad at you for?
You pretended to not noticed the coldness and just follow after him out the door. He got into the car, barely even waiting until your door was fully closed before taking off out of the driveway. He needed to get you home. To stop himself from doing the right thing and letting you go because he didn't want that. He wanted you, for as long as he could manage to keep you in his grasp. It was selfish of him, but everyone already knew what he was like so he didn't really care. He's happy with you. Happy with his life with you. Happy with his life around you. Happy with himself with you.... why in hell would he ever give you up?
Bonnie was right though, letting you go wasn't about his happiness. It was about yours. And as selfish as he was, your happiness would always come above his own. He made sure of that everyday. He didn't eat until you did, he took shorter showers so you could have more hot water, or he'd just wait until you were done and take whatever was left. You wanted- deserved a life without him and all the despair and pain that follows him around. You didn't deserve to be woken up in the middle of the night because he was restless. You didn't deserve to be distanced from all your friends just because you liked him. If living the best life you could meant leaving him behind, he was fine with that. He was fine with that for you. He was fine with you being happy even if it meant he would've been miserable for the remainder of his life.
"Kai, you need to slow down!" You spoke up, hand moving to his thigh as you noticed his hand clutching the wheel so tightly. "Your going 70 in a 35" it was late and no one was out on the streets, he didn't care how fast he was going.
"It's fine, y/n." He muttered, eyes not leaving the road. There were no deer out in this time of the year, there was no danger of hitting much of anything.
"No, Kai, it's dangerous." You responded, "slow down, please."
"No." He needed to get you home. If he slowed down, that gave you more time to talk. More time for him to think, more reasons to flood his brain on why you were better off without him.
"No? Kai, come on, seriously you need to slow down." You scoffed, not amused by his resistance. "I'd rather not die in a car crash before I'm old enough to run for president."
"Could you stop talking? Like just for a moment!" He huffed.
"Wha- I- no! What the hell is wrong with you? Slow the car down, Kai!" His eyes rolled, momentarily forgetting just how persistent you could be. "Kai!" Your hand moving from his thigh as you contemplated jumping out of the car just to see what he would do. Maybe after you break probably every bone in your body he'll slow the fucking car down. "Stop the damn car." You spoke but he ignored you, hoping you would just stop talking to him.
Instead of you stopping with the chat, he felt himself stomping on the break as your seatbelt came undone. Your body moving forward fast, colliding with the dashboard, and knocking the absolute wind out of you. He unbuckles his seat belt quickly, looking over to you. You were fine, your boobs not so much, but it wasn't unbearable. You let out a deep throaty couch, opening your car door. You only unbuckled your seat belt to get him to slow down, put the fear in him that you were going to jump out.
Well... it sort of worked.
"Y/N, what the hell?!" He growled, following you out the car. You were leaned onto the car trying to get some air into your king as the adrenaline started releasing through your body. "What the hell were you going to do? Jump out of the fucking car because I was got a few miles over? You could've gotten hurt! Hurt worse the just hitting the dashboard! What if another car was coming? You could've gotten ran over, and killed! Then you'd wake up with a craving for an AB positive juice box!" He scolded you as if you were a child.
"I wasn't actually going to jump out, asshole! I just wanted you to slow the damn car down! And if you would've done it, instead of being a dick then we wouldn't be having this conversation!"
He mumbled something under his breath that you couldn't quite make out and you finally managed to stand straight again. "Are you okay?" He sighed.
"Are you?" You shrugged. "You haven't looked at me since we left the house, you won't talk to me, practically told me to shut the fuck up, and then you yell at me like I'm kid."
"I didn't mean to yell at you. I just didn't want you to get hurt." He frowned a bit.
"I'm fine. But I'm not getting back in that car." You spoke.
"What? Why?"
"Tell me what Bonnie said to you that has you so upset." You demanded, his heart pausing for only a moment as you stated into his soul.
"What?"
"I might be a little be slower at picking up on the clues but I'm not stupid. What did she say that has you so deathly terrified to even look at me?" You asked. "Did she put a spell on you or something-"
"No, it's nothing, y/n, just drop it and let's get back." He shook his head.
"If it was nothing then you wouldn't mind telling me."
"It's none of your business."
"Seeing as your my boyfriend and she's my family, in some weird way, whatever beef you two have is my business."
"Leave it alone."
"No" You shook your head, crossing your arms over your chest even though it hurt a bit.
He wanted to yell, but he knees you still wouldn't give up. He didn't understand how you could be so annoyingly persistent still after he's shot you down so many times. It was like you knew you were getting under his skin yet you kept digging. Purposely trying to draw out some reaction just for your own amusement.
"Why don't you give up?" He groaned. "Why do you even care? Why can you stand there and look at me like that with no guilt at all?!" His foot colliding with the car tire. He hated how much every fiber of his being was pushing him to do the right thing for once. "How can you stand there knowing everything I've done and still sleep in a bed with me? Do you not care?" He wanted to stop but nothing was letting him.
"What're talking about?"
"I killed people! My own family, y/n! I hurt Bonnie! I hurt Damon! I hurt Elena, and then just because I thought you were pretty I hurt you too! And still, you refuse to see any of my faults in actions that I take pride in!" He yelled finally. It didn't phase you. You encourage him to let any emotions he was feeling out all the time. He was angry right now, and you were fine just seeing how angry he really was.
"You're not that person anymore, that's why. I trust you."
"Well you shouldn't." He shook his head. "I will always be that person!"
"You may feel like that person but your not!" You defend him against himself. "You've made a lot of progress, you know that. And I could sit here and dwell on the shit you've done in the past but if I did that to everyone, I'd have no one." You sighed, not understanding why he was bringing any of this up. What did Bonnie say to him?
"I left Bonnie in a prison world to die!"
"And you helped me get her back!"
"I tortured your best friend!"
"You wouldn't be the first-"
"Stop doing that!"
"What?"
"Making excuses for me! There are none! I'm a bad person, y/n! You aren't, this whole 'fix me' doll relationship isn't going to last because of that! Because you deserve better than me! And if I let this go any further, then that means I haven't changed. I'm not better than I was, I've just had you to keep me from making any stupid decisions-"
"Kai stop-"
"-and one day you're going to realize that this was all a mistake. That maybe there isn't something that can be redeemed in my cold unloveable heart. And when that day comes, I'd rather not wake up and see the pure and utter hatred you've developed for me just like the rest of the people in my life."
You felt your lungs stop filling with air. It was hard to get any in, you were just breathless. How were you suppose to breathe after that? Now you had a decent idea of what that conversation he had with Bonnie was.
"No. You don't get to do that, you can't push me away. I'm not here because your a chore Kai, I care about you, and I want to be with you-"
"Do you seriously have no respect for yourself?!"
"Do you?!"
"No! Because all my respect goes to you! Everything I have goes to you! And because I respect you, and because you are literally the only thing on earth that I actually truly care about I have to do this-"
"No you don't-"
"I'm br-"
"No your not!" You groaned, covering you ears as if that would effect the outcome of this situation.
"Stop being so stubborn."
"Kiss me."
"No,"
"Just do it, Kai! Kiss me, and we can make up and forget this whole conversation!"
"How can you seriously fucking stand there and act like I'm not going to ruin your life. I murdered my own siblings in cold blood. And I'd do it again, y/n. I don't feel bad, I never felt bad. I've done so many bad things and your standing here looking at me like I'm a fucking Saint who deserves the happiness you give!"
You remained silent.
"Is that what you want? To see how bad I can be? To wait for the day where you can see Malachi Parker in action? Be there when he finally breaks?! Again!" He scoffed and you shook your head, but no word escaped. "You know what" his eyes set on you, desperate to make you see what everyone else sees when they look at him. "Maybe i can get to your head, if I let you in mine." He spoke walking to you, hands on your temples before you could even move.
You tried to break from him hold be you weren't nearly as strong as he was. He was mumbling something under his breath and soon your whole body became numb. Your mouth feel open as you let out groans of pain as bloody images fill your head, and guilt and remorse and hurt filled your heart. Screams and cries ringing in your mind, but none you've ever heard before. People you've never seen crying, and struggling to run from you. Only it wasn't you they were running from. It was Kai.
His memories flooded your brain all at the same time. You had no idea had to process everything you were seeing. All the pain in your chest amplifying somehow with a deeper emotional pain. But most of that wasn't yours either. It was his too. Loneliness and Exhaustion. Hate and Longing. It was overwhelming along with the pictures and sounds running amok in your head. Soon pictures of Bonnie had flashed through your mind, and Jo, and Damon. Blood, and more blood, nothing wasn't covered in blood, and with every passing second the pain in your chest worsened. Cries of his name, and blood curdling screams filling your head, some of which belonged to you. That was when you felt the worse pain. Hearing your own screams caused a panic, and seeing your own body covered in blood, watching your body fall just earlier as your head collided with the end table. Sheer panic and anguish for some reason. But the last image to intrude your thoughts seemed like a not so distant memory of his. One of you. Even if your head wasn't being taken over you wouldn't have remembered because in this moment he wasn't with you. He was sitting across the grill watching you dunked your fries into a strawberry milkshake with a huge smile on your face in front of your friends. You seemed happy, and it was like you were witnessing someone come back to life. First grief hit you hard, then relief and joy, and then reality set in and it was like you realized that it was all just dream and that person was still dead and never coming back and you were never going to be happy again.
He tore his hands away from you, allow you to steal in some oxygen and you went dizzy, using the car for support so you wouldn't collapse on the ground. Your chest heaving as you tried to reel in your mind what you just saw, what you felt, what you heard. All of his memories. All of the bad things he's ever done, or things he would consider to be bad. But in his mind, it was only reason that you would probably be more inclined to leave him for.
Through every memories you were overwhelmed with emotions. Whatever you could feel you felt. You didn't know which emotions were yours or his. You couldn't separate the feelings. But in some weird way you could tell that the pain and anguish churning in your gut was his. You didn't know his family well enough to have regrets, or remorse... that was all him. All the fronts he put up... all those emotions exposed everything.
"Get in the car." He spoke softly, helping you off the car so he could open the door. "You don't need to say anything, I'm taking you home and then I'll be gone." He spoke as if he knew that you wanted to be nowhere near him.
Instead, you just wanted to give him a hug. That gut wrenching pain he felt still lingering within your body. Tears streaming down your cheeks but not because of what you saw, but how he felt. Every one of your friends have done things of equal evil status. Judging him for things he obviously did regret and feel everyday wouldn't be fair to him. And whether you felt like that because you wanted to be fair or because you were in love with him was a mystery to even you.
You didn't speak, you just sat in the car staring ahead of you. Trying to determine how you really truly felt. Why was him seeing you so bad that he felt he needed to include that memory in his mind torture. You barely felt time move as he flew down the road at the same speed as before. When he parked in front of the apartment the two of you shared, he decided he would just stay out and drive all night. He didn't know where to go. He knew you probably wouldn't want him around. You stared blankly at the red bricked building with the dim lights hanging from the walls.
"Y/N." He spoke softly, not wanting to look at the tears running down your cheeks.
"Kai." You returned, voice soft and brittle unaware of how vulnerable you sounded to him. "Why do you consider meeting me a bad thing?" You asked, not a single other word coming to mind.
"I don't regret meeting you. I regret putting you in this position in the first place. And if I didn't insert myself into your life then-"
"Then you wouldn't be breaking up with me on the side of the road. Leaving me alone to spend the rest of my life wondering what I did wrong to push you away. To wonder why my love wasn't good enough reassurance-" you rambled not sure why everything was coming out of your lips.
"then you wouldn't be crying right now. Then you could've avoided all of this." He sighed in response. He hated when you cried, if it was anyone else it would've been annoying. Your tears always were the one thing that could truly break him into pieces. "When I met you... when I met you, I was so sure that you were just going to ignore me or hate my guts. I fucking left your friend in a prison world to die, y/n. I tortured you, yet you still see me as someone who's able to be redeemed. You SAW what I did, and your still defending me!" His own tears starting to pool. "I d-don't want you to hate me... and I don't want to do this... but I do want to be happy and I don't think you could ever really do that until I'm out of your life." You silently shook your head as you tried not to let your own tears keep falling. Your heart clenching in your chest, breathing getting harder to achieve.
You didn't speak.
You couldn't.
Pain hitting you harder as each second passed. You didn't know how to respond to be truthful so you just unbuckle your seat belt. You sniffled, waking the tears from you cheeks only to has fresh one replace the one you wiped away. Kai still refused to look at you, maybe you finally did she was shitty person her was. And how stupid you were for being with him. You opened the door, getting out quickly hoping he follow you but he didn't. You were still a bit dizzy from him flooding his memories through your head. You're steps were slow and wobbly and you were bound to fall in seconds but you just kept moving. To any who didn't know what you've just been through, you were just so drunk sorority girl trying to make it to the door.
Kai watched you struggled for a second, knowing you could hold your own, but he didn't want you to. He got out of the car, not even caring about locking it behind himself. His feet carried the rest him over to you. Almost as if his body was acting on instinct to help you. His arm wrapped around you, your sweet scent immediately wafting into his nose causing a tear to slip down his cheek. He ignored it, helping you, and you just let him. You didn't feel like fighting. You just wanted his touch on your skin, so you allowed him to help you.
Many thoughts flooded your head. He was as bad as everyone said he was. But you he'd never hurt you, in any way. He wouldn't hurt anyone else because that would hurt you. He was good because he wanted to be, but only for you. No one else has ever really given him good enough reason to be good. You knew he wasn't the same person that he was, and tonight just cleared it all up. It didn't stop you from loving him. It just gave you all the more reason to. You've seen your best friends do worst than him, who were you to cash him out for something he's going to feel his entire life?
You didn't speak the entire way to your front door. He unlocked the door for you, hoping you would just be able to walk and get some rest on the couch or something.
You had other plans.
You stood straight on your own, looking back to the brown haired siphon who realized he was just fooled into a trap. Your hands reached for his, taking his hand in yours quickly before he could walk away.
"Y/n, please, it's easier this way just let me go-"
"You showed me your worst moment so I want to show you my best." You spoke. Eyes dead set on his, hands gripping each other's, neither one of you wanting to let each other go. "Please." You let out a small breath.
"This is going to make it a lot harder-"
"That's the point, Malachi." You sniffle, holding in a tiny laugh.
"Okay." He whispered, preparing himself for the rush of emotions and memories flooding through his head like he did to you. You pulled your hands from his, placing them on each of his temple before beginning the spell.
It wasn't long before he felt your presence in his mind, his on thoughts being taken over with your own thoughts. At first it was a horrible feeling watching every time you were happy, knowing he was never going to be able to see that from you again. Not if he kept his promise. He wouldn't to push you away, his chest light and full with joy and a love so over it was almost crushing. He watched as memories of times you spent with him. From your first date, to that one joke he cracked the made you laugh when he first kidnapped you just to torture you for practice. He watched as he teased you, to the first time the two of you had sex, to the first I love yous, and he felt how warm inside it made you at the fact that he never over used the words. You knew he loved you even when he didn't physically say those words. You felt his love every time you were around him, and that was enough for you.
He felt a soft smile forming on his lips but he could tell if it was from your happiness or knowing how much he really meant to you. Memories of late night cries, and arguments ending in angry sex, and sneaking out of classes, and talking trash about your friends even though you would never said something too horrible about them.
You liked who you were with him. You loved who you were. And he felt all of that, he felt how much love you held for him, how much pain you were in to think about him leaving. And eventually that strong happy, lovely, calm feeling was stripped away from him, leaving him empty for a moment before he felt you hands against his cheeks.
You were holding his face, staring straight into his eyes, both of you almost to the point of sobs. You were praying to god that you're plan worked. The hell were you going to do if it didn't?
  "Don't leave me, Kai."
"Y/N-"
"I'll follow you to the ends of the earth, Kai. Let me love you, please." You pleaded, bodies moving closer together without each other even realizing. It was natural for you to be close with him, you never questioned it.
He didn't want to say no. But he owed it to you to say no.
"You saw what I did-"
"And you saw how much I love you-"
"You watched in first person how I killed four of my siblings-"
"And you watched from my point of view how badly I fell in love with you."
You just wanted to kiss and make up. You would fall apart if he left you alone. Especially if he was doing it for your own 'happiness' because that meant he thought you weren't happy with him. It was upsetting and slightly insulting, because you were the happiest you've ever been with him.
"I just want to do the right thing, baby." He whimpered quietly, you're heart nearly breaking in a million pieces. His tearing streaming quickly, mentally slapping himself for being so weak for you.
"Then stay... stay and make me the happiest person in the entire world. We could graduate together and get a small house in the suburbs, or- or we could leave. Right now. Travel all across the world, experiencing so many different things together." You offered meaning every word.
At some point in the silence that seemed to last for forever, one of you couldn't take it anymore. You didn't care to pay attention which one of you, but your lips connected, smooshing your faces together to be as close as possible. Tears mixing on each other's cheeks, his hands down on your waist pulling you closer into him as you both made you're way inside your shared home.
He used his foot to kick the door closed, being careful to touch you oh so gently. You were a fragile peace of glass to him, the most beautiful sculpture who had no business being with him. He did nothing to deserve you, yet you felt he deserved you more than anyone in the world. You wasted so many years on him tonight, and for some reason you didn't care anymore. He was here, he was on you, his hands, his lips, your minds in sync for each and every single one of your next moves.
Clothes slowly being tossed the the floor as you both backed each other to your bedroom through the dark apartment. By the time you reached the bed the only thing you had left were you bra and underwear, along with his shirt and boxers. Neither of you had even bothered to pull apart for a single breath. You allowed him to gently lower you on the poorly made bed.
"Mmh, w-wait-" he mumbled against your lips. Youre legs parting for him to slip between which he did without thinking. "This is wrong-"
"No, it's not?" You spoke in confusion. "I love you, Kai. I don't care what Bonnie said, because she doesn't know what this feels like." You shake your head.
"Find someone else to ruin and let her go" Kai quoted, your grip on him tightening. "I don't want to-"
"Maybe I want you to ruin me. To fuck up my life. To fuck up my morals just because I love you. I want that, Kai. I want every bit of it. I want this love that consumes me from the inside out, and I want to be able to go against everything I believe for you. I. Love. You." His hands traveling down your waist, as you let out a sigh.
"I love you." He mumbled. "I love you so fucking much." His lips came down on your collarbone, fingers slipping under you panties waistbands before snapping his fingers to get rid of them. You felt the cold air against your slick heat, the warmth from his own body radiating into yours. His hips grinding down into your, his hardon pressing into you causing a light whimpering as you felt the butterflies raging into the pair of your stomach.
"I just wanna be with you, baby." You let out a soft moan, urging him on as he nips and sucked red marks onto your skin.
You used your own magic to undo the threads of his plain blue shirt as you dragged your hand down his back. The fabric slipping down his arms which he didn't mind. He was too focus on your warm skin under his tongue. His teeth grazing across your skin, coming closed with a tiny pinch every time. Your chest heaving into his from the closeness, and heat of it all.
"Tell me to stop” he mumbled against your skin, hips grinding into your heat as you let out needy moans.
“I need you, Kai, please.” Your lip caught in between your teeth, as the cloth of his underwear separating the two of you disappeared. “I want you so bad.” You whined, fingers digging into the soft warm skin on his back.
You felt his hard on slipping between your slick folds as he rocked his hips back and forth. He wanted to feel you, he wanted you to feel him. He never wanted to leave your side, or go a moment without feeling your warmth. He loved you with every fiber of his being, and there was no possible way he could truly explain that to you.
“Please-” you pleaded before he slowly pushed himself into you. Your mouth hung open as his length filled you to the brim, the tip of his cock hitting that hot spongy spot in your cunt so well you could help but moan. He always did fill you up perfectly, almost as if he was made for you or vice versa. “Oh my god.” You whined, hips grinding into his as his hips set a steady pace.
Your legs resting around his waist, as you let out small breathy moans. He was fucking into you hard, but it still felt amazing. He wanted to take his time with you and you felt it. Your body tingling, mind focused solely on him and everywhere your skin touched his. You felt his lips connected with you neck, continuing to suck soft bruised on the skin, placing a soft kiss after each one whispering a single ‘I love you’ each time. His hands left your waist, traveling up your beautiful naked body, taking all the warmth he could, until he traced your hands to his back. He pulled the off, even though he enjoying the sting of your nails digging into his skin, pinning your hands down above you head. His hands flat onto of yours, fingers intertwining as his lips found yours again, your kisses sloppy and slow. The sound of skin on skin filling the room as his pace quickened earning louder breathier moans from your pretty little mouth.
You felt a bubbling heat in the pit of your stomach signaling you were close to your high. Eyes struggling to sty open, as your boyfriend fucked into you so lovingly. It became harder to do anything other than focus on the feeling of him hitting so deep into you he’s almost hit your cervix. The kisses became harder to return and nothing but the sound of you filled the room. He watched in complete awe as you as you slowly began to fall apart. You were the most beautiful creatures he’s ever laid his eyes on, and he had you here underneath him on your way to this euphoric high that he him caused. His name coming out of your mouth in quiet moans and pleads and warning of you about to explode all over his dick. You were all he’s ever wanted out of life, and now he had you and there was no one and nothing that would take you away from him except for death itself.
You were his and that was final.
“Open your eyes baby, look at me.” He groaned as he felt your cunt convulsing around him so tightly.
You struggled with the actions, your eyes focusing on his eyes as you cried out in pleasure. “I’m so close, Kai, fuck, I’m going to cum.” You whined and he nodded watching as your breathing got heavier.
“Cum for me, baby, cum all over me.” He urged you on, feeling his own high approaching.
You felt something inside you explode, a loud moan his name escaping your lips, all your juices spilling onto his hard cock a he continued fucking you through your high. You body jolting and shaking around him, as he went faster, eyes rolling to the back of your head as you realizing you weren’t done yet.
“So close.” He mumbled, hands squeezing your so tightly you felt as if they were going to break. You ignored the pain of having your hard crush and just let out absorber moan from another orgasm building quickly.
“M’gonna c-cum again!” You warned, strained voice loud and needy.
“Me too baby” Kai moaned back, watching your eyes squeeze shut again taking in the way your body shook around him. “Let go y/n, I know you want to.” He spoke out of breath.
You felt his thrust getting sloppily, but he tried keeping up the pace. His own body stiffening as his cock twitch in you as you clenched around him again. Both of your falling apart with loud moans, and whimpering of each other names, lips coming together again as he spilt every last bit of his hot cum into your beautifully worn out cunt.
Neither of you spoke any words. Just your reveled in each other’s tongues, allowed you naked bodies to somehow merge into one. You felt a sudden tiredness take over you as it did the same to him.
“I don’t want to let you go.” He whispered into your lips.
“Then don’t. Let’s stay this way forever.” You hummed, squeezing his hands in yours.
“Deal.”

Summary: Ava and Adam go on that date, it goes about you'd expect with the Dark Order involved, Things with Kenny come to a head.
Tumblr media
"Violet!"
"Ava? Mon Cher Smackdown is about to start why are you screaming?"
Violet gave Finn a look before putting her friend on speaker "Mon Roi is here too, what has you so excited?"
"ADAM ASKED ME OUT ON A DATE!" The younger woman yelled
Ava could hear Violet cursing in French from a small distance. “Really? That’s amazing! Give me details now!”
“I lost my phone and he found it near your adopted brother and then Kenny was annoying me again so he covered for me by saying we were going on a date so we’re actually going on one!”
“I’m so happy for you!”
“Could you do me a solid?” Ava asked
Of course darling," Violet agreed
"Could you guys not tell the big boss?" Ava begged "You know I love Seth to death, he's my dad shaped person but he wasn't happy about this whole AEW deal and he'll be even less happy to know I'm going out with one of their biggest stars"
Violet and Finn silently looked at each other before agreeing to the younger woman's request
"We have you covered darlin" Finn said
"What are you going to do about Omega?I'm starting to worry. He's really not taking no for an answer"
“I honestly don’t know” Violet handed Finn her phone, taking out the one meant to contact family. “I think she’s going to threaten Malachi into watching over you” Finn laughed.
Ava sighed in relief. While Malachi Black, formerly Aleister to Violet, was dark and broody, he did scare Kenny with a simple stare.
“So how’s Mox doing?” Violet asked
"Good, he got Omega off my back last night at Dynamite, threatened him with Ruby." Ava said "He said something about promising Seth to look out for me?"
"Seth called him and Miro when you decided to go to AEW." Finn explained
"Called in a couple of favors. You are the baby."
Ava rolled her eyes even though the couple couldn't see her "You've got to be kidding. I can take care of myself"
“We know you can take care of yourself, Seth has a overprotective complex”
Ava sighed but didn’t disagree. “We got to go now, see you tomorrow!” Violet hung up.
Ava turned off her phone, seeing a text from Kenny. Rolling her eyes she deleted it. “Is he ever gonna get the point?” she asked herself before flopping on her hotel bed with a sigh. He thoughts turning to the next day and the date she'd been dreaming of for years.
-Next Day-
She met Adam outside a café, the cowboy looking handsome in normal street clothes and without a certain purple and black group shadowing him.
“Wow, you look great” He said. As she grinned and twirled once, showing off the chic black suit she'd chosen for their date.
“Hope you don’t mind but I invited Violet and Finn just in case your friends crash this”
Adam laughed. “They probably will ”
Inside the cafe, Finn and Violet were waiting at a four person table, surprisingly without their daughter in tow.
"Where's my honey bunches?" Ava said with a pout, that Adam found adorable
"Becky and Seth have her" Finn explained "Shes having a playdate"
“Next time you bring her” Ava pointed. Finn raised his hands and laughed. Violet slid over a black coffee to Adam.
He accepted it with a smile. “So you’re both going after the top titles in Smackdown” he grinned.
“Yup!” Finn grinned. “It was fun in NXT but I wasn’t spending another week without my husband there” Ava sighed.
“It’s harder to get a title shot in AEW, I have no idea how to get to Britt”
“I lost the chance to be the inaugural champ because someone thought an ass deserved it” Adam muttered.
“Adam I think your shadows are here” Violet pointed to a booth in the corner
Sure enough, the purple and black clad Dark Order filled 2 corner booths, trying and failing to be inconspicuous.
"Oh god" Adam murmured "I'm so sorry, I shouldn't have told them where we were going"
"They really care about you" Ava smiled at Adam causing that feeling to flutter in his chest again.
"You may not, have been the first AEW champion but you've got a shot at Kenny at All Out" Finn says
"Sure do" Adam says "I can't wait, I've owed Kenny an ass whipping for a while now"
“Fucking creep” Ava rolled her eyes. “How’s Paige?”
“You don’t know that from Mox?” Violet raised an eyebrow. Ava shook her head
“She’s ok, doing wonders with her makeup. Her and Sonya are planning a wedding”
Ava nodded. “Sorry about the Kingdom disbanding”
Finn rolled his eyes. “Of course Vince brings up Shotzi and us but doesn’t want Kyle, Millie, Priscilla or Jordan”
Adam and Ava share a smile knowing while AEW wasn't a paradise by any means…it wasn't run by Vince.
A loud bang sounded from the back of the restaurant and every turned to see one of the corner tables flipped on its side as John Silver looked around sheepishly.
Adam dropped his head in his hands as Ava giggled "I'm sorry, I'm gonna go uh…handle this" he said rising from his seat and heading toward the back.
"They are quite the band of misfits aren't they?" Violet said as she tried not to laugh as they watched Adam easily lift the table back in place and start seemingly scolding them for crashing their double date.
"They love him, and with the entire….mess with the Elite…their very overprotective." Ava explained
“Reminds me of Seth” Violet said. Ava’s eyes widened.
“It totally is!” Finn laughed as Adam came back and sat down.
“They swear it’s just a coincidence they all wanted to come here on the same day and time as my date”
Violet flipped her hair and put on her flirty voice. “So this a date?
Adam blushed hard. “Um…well, it’s definitely not a…friend thing…we’re not friends. I mean we are friends!, but I want to be more then friends!"
Ava blushed as she watched Adam flounder under Violet's question
"Leave him alone, mo chroi" Finn finally rescued the younger man from his wife.
“I was just being a good friend” Violet smirked.
Adam took a breath. “I don’t know why but I have a thing for goth people”
Ava looked at Violet.
“Really? Is that why you went to the Dark Order?”
“Honestly? Kenny ruined tag teams for me. The Bullet Club went to shit after you were kicked out”
Finn’s eye twitched, remembering how the Young Bucks fucked him over.
“The Bullet Club is nothing to me now. They ruined it!”
“The Elite’s worse, nothing but kissing Kenny’s ass, apparently he was looking to go to Impact and take their top title”
“Thank god the old man bought them, Impact might have been the worse part of my career but AEW would have ruined them” Violet sipped her ice coffee.
Adam sighed.
“I don’t know what happened. One minute he was my brother, now he’s a stranger” Adam said quietly as Ava rubbed his back
"Its okay, your going to take the AEW title from him at All Out." Ava consoled him.
The 2 couples finished their meal and left the restuarant, Finn and Violet heading to the arena to get ready for Smackdown, and Ava and Adam walking though the city streets enjoying each other's company.
"This has been great" Ava says as they finally end up back at the hotel
"We'll have to do it again sometime" Adam replied causing Ava to blush again.
"Maybe next time….just the two of us?" He asked softly
“No demon and vampires. No Dark Order” Ava agreed. Adam hugged her.
“Adam!” Evil Uno yelled. The pair looked at the stable. Anna walked over. “Well, the date was a success so Alex made you this” She handed a black jacket to Ava. It had a purple rose stitched in the back.
“Wow, Alex’s a suckup” Adam joked. “I’m totally wearing this next week” Anna smiled.
“C’mon Adam, before the idiots start screaming”
He rolled his eyes but hugged Ava goodbye, kissing her hair before walking away.
The Next Week
After spending the weekend and into the next week bouncing between elation over her successful date with Adam (including spending a hefty amount of time texting back and forth with the cowboy) and annoyance that Kenny just would not stop texting and calling, it was finally Wednesday and time for that weeks episode of Dynamite, at which Ava had a match against Nyla Rose.

Over the past few days she had gone hunting for more appropriate gear to compliment her new jacket and was now wearing black leather shorts with purple accents and a purple and black corset top.
"Don't you look like a full fledged member of the misfit society, I really thought you'd have better taste Sweetheart" Kenny said walking up to her, the Young Bucks flanking him
“I’ve liked purple and black before the Dark Order existed” Ava snapped.
Kenny grabbed her arm. “Let go!”
“I just want what’s best for you” Kenny said fiercely
“HEY!” Darby Allin hit Kenny with a skateboard.
“She’s said no to you for weeks now, get lost!” He roared, Ava seeing why Mox had pretty much adopted him.
Kenny looked panicked and all but ran. The Bucks, glaring at her as the followed
“Thanks” Ava said to Darby. “I hate that fucker”
"Join the club" Darby replied
Later that night after beating Nyla Rose, Ava was celebrating in the ring when Kenny's music hit and The Elite surrounded the ring.
"I really tried to do this in private Ava, baby but you just won't listen to me, you'd rather hang out with those losers instead of being part of The Elite"
“I. Am. Not. Your. Baby!” Ava screamed,.
Kenny stepped in, smirking. “Just accept the date”
The crowd began chanting variations of yes and no.
Then the music of the Dark Order hit, Adam leading the stable to a beat down. Colt tackled Kenny, Adam waving sarcastically at him before going over to Ava, "You okay Darlin?"
"Yeah, fucking asshole. Why won't he leave me alone"
"Ava, Ava!" Kenny panted, "I have a deal for you, since you and the drunk, seem so close lately, Next week….you and Adam against me and Britt Baker. You win, you get a title shot at All Out. You two lose, Cowboy loses his shot, and you go out with me"
Ava looked at Adam, who was clenching his jaw. Anna and Evil Uno nodded their heads.
Ava grabbed a mic. “We accept! And let’s raise the stakes!!! If we win and move on to kick you asses at All Out, you leave me the fuck alone!”
Kenny gulped "Done!"
“I’ll add to that!” Adam yelled. “When I kick your ass, you don’t get to have a rematch as long as I’m champion. Let someone else get an opportunity”
"Deal!" Kenny said cockily "It doesn't matter anyway "You two are gonna lose and when you do...not only will Adam never get a shot at the AEW Championship,  Ava...baby...your all mine"

Together We Are Apart, but Apart We Are Together
Chapter 6. Name For a Face
“Tigers die and leave their skins; people die and leave their names.” - Japanese Proverb
youtube
While I was awaiting his return, I finished up the remainder of my tea. It had gone a bit cold since it was first poured. Nevertheless, I still drank it, savoring the sweet flavor as it slid down my throat. I decided to lay down on the sofa to rest my sore body. Sinking down into the cushions and staring blankly up at the ceiling, I wondered if I should have went to retrieve the boy’s wallet instead of Malachi. I didn’t want his willingness to help to be misinterpreted as him enabling my own foolish actions. Otherwise he would have been just as much at fault, if we were to find ourselves in the midst of chaos. He had always been eager to assist with whatever trouble I had found myself in, ready to bare the burden with open arms. It sometimes felt like he was too loyal to me, like he was just blindly complying to my wishes. I didn't want him to help me because he felt he had to, but because he wanted to. In turn it made me feel guilty about how I treated Malachi, as if I was exploiting the nature of our friendship.
Lost in the guilt-ridden thoughts of my conscience, it hadn’t even occurred to me that I had closed my eyes. I had fully intended to stay awake until Malachi returned, so I reluctantly opened them. However, I found it to be a struggle to keep them that way. Fatigue was starting to set in as I tried desperately to blink the sleepiness out of my eyes. The calming effect of the rose tea paired with the soothing sound of the logs crackling in the fire created a comfortable ambiance for me to relax to. Eventually my limbs began to feel heavy and my breathing slowed enough for me to finally lose the battle against the Sandman. Just like that, I readily drifted off into the unconscious.
It felt like Malachi was gone for quite some time before I was awoken by a small crashing noise that emanated from in front of the fireplace. Looking drowsily in the direction of the sound, I squinted to faintly make out Malachi readjusting a drying rack I had set close to the fire to dry the boy’s clothes. Through blurred vision I saw him carefully hang the articles back into their positions on the bars, spreading them out to ensure they dried properly.
“That damn thing needs to be moved. Why would she set that cursed thing right there? Stupid human boy and his stupid human clothes. What if I had fallen into the fire and burned my as—,” he whisper-yelled to himself irritated before he realized he had woken me up. “My apologies, I did not mean to wake you.” He bowed his head embarrassed of his crude outburst. I stretched and yawned, feeling the muscles in my back strain from the movement before sitting up. “It’s fine,” I waved my hand with blithe disregard for his unnecessary apology. “How long were you gone? I fell asleep waiting for you.”
“Not long.”
I rubbed the delicate skin around my eyes to get a better view of him. That’s when I took in his whole figure. Looking towards his legs I noticed that his pants were thoroughly soaked all the way up to his shins, from no doubt trudging around in the snow. “Oh my gosh, are you okay? You’re soaked. Here sit in front of the fire to warm up.” I quickly scrambled off the sofa and offered him my seat.
“I can assure you I am quite alright. I am nowhere in the condition you were in earlier tonight.” He assured with a sincere smile while taking a seat next to me. I awkwardly sat back down again.
Suddenly remembering why he left, I anxiously inquired, “Did you find it?”
“Yes.” He simply answered pulling it from his robe. The leather of the wallet was cold and stiff from getting wet. “And it did not take me long, it was just buried deeper than we originally thought. The snow has picked up quite a bit since we last left.” I held the wallet not ready to open it as he continued. “I also disposed of the gun and the patch of ice he fell through, you will be pleased to know it froze back over.”
“That’s good. No evidence. Do you think the old man will report the boy’s involvement.”
“No. I already took care of it.” I furrowed my brows confused. “I took the liberty of tracking him down and wiping his memory.” Malachi explained.
“Oh. Thank you. I didn’t even need to ask.”
“Yes. Well, you are lucky I am the best,” Malachi facetiously boasted. I rolled my eyes.
“What about the gun man?”
“Did I wipe his memory? No, I want him to live with the guilt until it consumes him.” The expression in Malachi’s eyes turned unnervingly dark. “And I doubt he will anonymously report the boy’s death. Not unless he wants to involve himself with the authorities or worse get caught by them. He will probably try to go about living his life as if nothing ever happened.”
“That’s horrible. But it’s good for us, I guess. Less of a mess to clean up. Not that I haven’t already jeopardized enough for us as it is.” I ashamedly spoke looking down at the floor.
“You are too hard on yourself.” He frowned concerned.
“I have to be. I can’t make mistakes. Especially when they effect those I cherish most.” I said looking purposefully at him.
“Ha, even a divine being such as yourself is allowed to make mistakes. And for as long as you allow me, I will always be there by your side to help you fix what is considered broken. Even if that means going against the rules of our nature.”
“Yes, but you said, if the consequences were dire then I was to take respons—,”.
Malachi promptly held a hand up to stop me, “I am well aware of what I said. However, if your actions do not bode well, I will still remain faithful to you, and only you.” He chided. He then took a second to soften his voice before continuing, “Allow me to clarify. It is my choice, and I choose to help you not because I feel it is my duty to do so, but because I want to help you. Why will you not understand that? We are as thick as thieves, even when that means cheating death,” he quipped. And with that he chastely kissed my forehead to put my guilty thoughts at ease.
I decided to steer the conversation away from my self-scrutiny, and brought our attention back to the wallet in my hands, “Did you look in it?” Immediately after the question left my mouth, adrenaline started to surge through my veins. I was well aware of the spike in my heart rate and the perspiration gathering on the nape of my neck.
“No, I thought I would let you do the honors.”
“Oh. Okay.” Nervous, I turned the wallet over in my quivering hands and reveled in the feeling of physically holding the piece of leather. The movement made it hard to undo the snap closure, and my slightly sweaty palms were doing me no favors as they slid against the leathery texture. Finally after a brief struggle I was able to open it.
There inside his wallet were some clear card holders with one containing a card with a small picture of him. Holding it closer to my face I realized it was his driver’s license. To the right of his picture, in printed text was the one thing on my mind that I had been wondering for months, his name. “His name is… Kim Taehyung,” I read aloud smiling. “Taehyung.” I repeated again letting the two syllables roll around in my mouth. I wanted to keep repeating his name like a mantra, giddy with excitement that I finally knew it.
“Well, now that you know the human’s name, I would advise you check on him. Speaking of which, I am surprised to not find you with him now. Why is that?” He eyed me suspiciously.
“I was waiting for you. He’s safe in my bed. I could hear the steady pace of his heartbeat from out hear.” This was a half truth, I also wanted to avoid the temptation of staring at his sleeping form. “You, however, were out there in the snow looking for something I needed, cold and alone. I was worried.” I may have been preoccupied with the probability of the boy’s, no Taehyung’s, life; but that didn’t mean I was any less concerned about Malachi’s wellbeing.
“Ah, so you do care,” he teasingly joked.
“Of course I care about you. You’re my friend.”
“As are you.”
“Thank you.” I sweetly hummed the sentiment for the fifth time tonight.
He nodded as to convey that it wasn’t a problem. “It was my pleasure little bird.” He patted me on the head. “You should check on the boy and get some rest.” He nodded towards my bedroom door.
“I will. I suggest taking a warm bath before bed. Goodnight Malachi.”
“Thank you for the recommendation. Goodnight my dear.” He said as he got up and walked towards the bathroom.
youtube
After Malachi had left to run a bath for himself, I decided to put out the fire. I could instantly feel the temperature of the room drop several degrees. While blowing out the last candle, I looked towards the window. Through the glass I was able to clearly make out the moon. Its light that penetrated from outside was more than enough for Malachi to see when he came out to go to bed. As I made my way over to my bedroom door I counted my steps until I reached it. I walked with one foot directly in front of the other with my arms out to the sides of me, as if I was walking on a balance beam. I know I must have looked somewhat silly, but it was all in an effort to prolong the inevitable, as well as simultaneously calm my nerves. I ultimately didn’t want to seem too eager to see Taehyung. Finally reaching my door I briefly hesitated before turning the knob. I then walked through the threshold and quietly closed the door. Once the lock softly clicked into place, I leaned my head against the wood and took a few slow breaths in order to prepare myself. I didn’t want to look in his direction just yet because I knew once I saw him it would be difficult to look away.
Over on my bedside table was a candle that I wished to light. Using the moonlight, I repeated my odd ritual from earlier, deliberately looking straight at the floor as I made my way over. Except this time I made sure to walk with normal footing. I would have been mortified if I had tripped and potentially disturbed his sleep.
Placing Taehyung’s wallet on the table, I opened the drawer and blindly felt around for a box of matches. After a few failed attempts, I finally grabbed ahold of one. I plucked one match from the container and struck it against the side of the box. Not wanting the flame to go out, I quickly touched it to the tip of the candle wick and flicked the used match to put it out. Almost immediately my senses were flooded with the rich earthy musk of amber and sandalwood. Closing my eyes, I took a brief moment to appreciate the comforting aroma. The candle’s flickering light intimately lit up the small area around my bed causing our shadows to bounce on the wall. I then leisurely turned my head and saw him.
Tucked into my silk sheets, he laid flat on his back with his whole body, from the neck down, hidden under the blankets. I watched him sleep peacefully as I sat on the floor and knelt near the side of my bed. From under the silky blankets, I could make out the subtle yet steady rise and fall of his chest. If I listened close enough I could hear the sound of his soft inhales and exhales. Continuing my gaze upwards, it landed on his neck and the pretty curve of his jaw. From there I was met with the sight of his beautiful face, his expression passive. Slumber had made his features look innocent. The moles that were on his cheek, lip, and under his eye reminded me of the stars that sparsely dusted the sky on a cloudy night. They somewhat reminded me of a constellation and it briefly dawned on me that if I were to connect them, would I be any closer to navigating my zealous yet enigmatic feelings for him.
Against my pillows his head rested delicately. His hair was almost fully dry. A few locks in the front of his head curled around his face, while the rest fell elegantly onto the pillow like a halo. Its golden hues were complimented by the iridescent pearly sheen of my pillow case, and the sight created a picturesque scene worth committing to memory. I couldn’t help but be enamored by him. He looked otherworldly, almost like an angel. He could have very well been one of the ones that I had come across when I visited Heaven from time to time.
Finally able to touch his face in a way that wasn’t correlated to life threatening peril, I gently brushed my knuckles against his cheek and tenderly traced his jawline with my fingertips in curious fascination. Mesmerized by the feeling of the suppleness of his warm to the touch skin, I pondered how I got so lucky as to be this close to him, while also being able to reach out and touch him. It was almost intoxicating. And what was even better, is that now I had his name to go along with his face.
“So your name is Tae-hyung.” I whispered each syllable slowly more to myself than him, dramatically emphasizing the pronunciation of both. I smiled at the new found knowledge. “It suits you.”
Not long after admiring his sleeping form, I began to feel like my conscious reality was fraying around its edges. Walking a few feet on my knees to the end of my bed, I took a cotton blanket slewn messily over the end of the bed post and draped it over my shoulders. In my drowsy state I placed a gentle kiss against Taehyung’s forehead. I then turned to blow out the candle after my rash display of affection, but saw something that I thought was peculiar out of the corner of my eye. For what felt like a split second I could have sworn I had seen a brief flash of very faint light emitting from around his head in the dim candle light. However, I attributed it to being a trick of the light, after all I was exhausted and my blurry tired vision wasn’t the most reliable at this exact moment.
Taking one last longing look at his face in the moonlight after blowing out the candle [as if this would be the last time I saw him], I rested my head against my arm and was lulled to sleep by the rhythm of his calm breathing, hopeful for whatever tomorrow brought us.

You’re a Bennett witch, right?
Kai x Reader
WARNINGS: violence, swearing WORD COUNT: 1509 Imagine finding out about the white oak steaks before anyone else, and Klaus's witch being from the Gemini coven. You're on your way to tell the MF gang about the stake when your car crashes and you wake up in Kai's prison world.
Y/n's eyes fluttered open, the blinding daylight making her shield her eyes with her hand. She could feel the gritty gravel beneath her skin and she climbed up from the floor. Y/n was standing in the middle of a road. In mystic falls. But no one was there. Where was everyone? How did she get here? Only one reason cams to mind. Klaus. He must've dumped her here after she figured out how to kill him.
She was on her way to tell Damon. Just as she got back into mystic falls her car mysteriously crashed and she heard klaus's witch incessantly chanting some spell. The next thing she new everything went black and she woke up in some kind of empty world. At least her wounds had healed.
Y/n decided to head further into town - maybe there would be people there and it was all just some illusion. As she reached the town square she was getting less and less hopeful as not a soul could be found. Y/n also checked a few houses on her way to see if people were in them but she found nothing but over-used toothbrushes and old 90s TVs, which she thought was a little odd as most of the mystic falls residents seemed to own newer ones. Maybe it was just a coincidence.
Upon reaching the Grill, y/n decided to grab a drink as she'd probably take a little while to figure out how to get out of this strange place. She walked into the bar and flicked her wrist, expecting a bottle to fly into her hand but nothing happened. Huh. She tried again. Nothing. Y/n raised her hand and focused on a random chair.
"Invisique." She said. Still, nothing. Maybe there was no magic here too.
"That's convenient." Y/n muttered sarcastically. She leant over the bar and grabbed a bottle and a glass, pouring a generous amount into the cup. The barstool whined as she subtly swayed from side to side, the crystal-like surface of the drink rippling into steady waves as a tear trickled down my cheek and plummeted into the cool liquid. Frustration was bubbling in her brain and all her emotions were blurring into one. Just as she was about to bring the glass to lips a crippling pain washed through her and the glass fell to the bar, smashing and sending pieces of glass everywhere. The pressure on her shoulder was still there and the pain was still present.
"Huh, so she does have magic." A voice mused behind her. Y/n whipped her head round as the pain subsided. There was a young man, probably in his early 20s stood behind her with a shit-eating grin. He was very handsome, with brown hair and gorgeous blue-grey eyes.
"What did you do to me? And what do you mean by I do have magic?" She questioned harshly before adding, "and who are you?" She asked the boy. He smiled to himself and looked up at her.
"Sorry, manners. I'm Malachi but I go by Kai because who in their right mind calls a kid Malachai." He said with a tone of disgust, holding out his hand for her to shake.  Y/n starred at it but refused to touch him again. His face dropped in disappointment and he retracted his hand. "To answer your other questions, I siphoned you. I absorbed your magic so I kind of just, like, ate it." He laughed to himself. "And you are our ticket out of here. A witch with magic and Bennett blood." Y/n nodded slowly, processing. Huh. This kid seemed dangerous but his appearance said otherwise. I'm not a Bennett Witch, she thought. She was about to say it but decided to hold back the information, in case that was the only reason she was alive. He had got to be in here for something bad, and the chances of murder were looking high.
"That I am." She smiled, reciprocating his enthusiasm. He grinned again and sat in the stood next to her. "What is this place?" Y/n blurred out. Kai thought for a second before responding. "It's a prison world. It's like a snapshot of May 10th, 1994, on repeat for all eternity. No one else here." 1994? No wonder everything seemed so old. She nodded and asked more questions, curiosity taking over. "How long have you been here? Why are you here? How do we get out?" He laughed slightly at her forward ness. "I will answer all those, but first, I'm wondering why you're here. I mean Bennett witches are always the good ones, so why are you here?"
"Well there's this Original vampire called Klaus and he's been trying to kill me and all my friends and we thought he was unkillable until today, when I discovered this white oak stake can. So I was on my way to tell my friends when my car crashed and his witch started chanting and next thing ya know, I'm here." Y/n tried to explain best she could. Kai looked at her intently. "Huh, cool. To answer your questions, I've been here 15 years, your blood and magic and this thing called an ascendant," he paused and pulled something out his pocket, waving it a bit, "are the key to get out. And as for why I'm here, I'm not sure you're quite ready for that yet, sweetheart." He said. Y/n rolled her eyes.
"1) don't call me sweetheart and 2) you'd be surprised, I've fought off all kinds of things worse than some sloppily-dressed, teenage boy who's stuck in some supernatural alternate reality." She scoffed. He raised his eyebrows, "oh yeah, like what?" He challenged. She rolled her eyes again. "Hmm, let me see, we'll start simple, vampires, werewolves, warlocks, let's not forget the original vampires, oh and did I mention the hybrid? Half wolf half vampire?" His eyes widened for a second before his cocky demeanour was back.
"Okay, I killed half my siblings, tried to kill two more and cut my twin sister's spleen out." Y/n was actually shocked for a second. So he did do something bad. "So what are you? You're not human and you're not a vampire or werewolf." He chuckled slightly, "like I said before, I'm a siphon. I'm basically a witch who's born without Margaux but I can absorb it from other things, like you for example." He raised his hands to either side of my face but didn't actually touch me, an orange glow emitting from my cheeks and he made a face of pleasure (GIF above). When he was done he pulled his hands back, "motis." He muttered, a glass flying into his hand. "Like that." He smiled.
————————————————————————
Later that day... "So if we use the ascendant here, the eclipse will take us back home." Kai spoke as he walked. He stood still over a leafy patch in the clearing and turned to face me. "So how do I come into this?" I ask, stopping a few feet in front of him. "Well, your blood with go on the ascendant and your magic is what we're using to activate it." I nodded, stepping forward and getting the ascendant from him. He lent into me and grabbed my forearm. "Not long now." He grinned. I swapped and nodded. Now he was creeping me out. We both looked up as the sun began to Aline and I sliced my palm with the ascendant, squeezing some of my blood onto of this. "You remember what to say?" He pried. I nodded and started chanting, feeling Kai's eyes on me the whole time.
The eclipse ended. We were still stood there. Kai let go of my wrist and screamed, kicking a near by tree. "It didn't work? Why didn't it work?" He shouted. I stood there, stunned. He turned around and walked back over to me, grabbing my shoulders and shaking me. "WHY DIDN'T IT WORK? Goddamn it y/n!" He screamed in my face. "I don't know." I said quietly. "She had the ascendant, we had the celestial event, we had the magic, we had the Bennett b-blood..." he trailed off, "You are a Bennett witch, right?" He looked into my eyes. "RIGHT?!" I shook my head. He shoved me back and screamed again. "It's all your fault! Now there's no way out!" He screamed at me. I gulped and stayed down, scared of what he would do. He strode over to me and grabbed my throat, lifting me up. "You are gonna pay for that." He whispered in my ear. Fear shot through me. Oh shit.

Word Count: about 1890
Tumblr media
*Flashback*
Look principle Honey, I didn't mean to…”
“Didn’t mean to what Y/N? Dye Briane’s hair blue with her shampoo?”
“Hey, not my fault she stole it out of my shower bag” In reality, it was your fault you hated Briane, a girl constantly causing trouble for anyone she came into contact with. You wanted payback. Payback for the way she talked about your friends, and family. So you played a helpless prank on her, and you got in trouble.
“You still did it on purpose Ms. Y/N”
“And you are proving that how…”
“Ms. Y/N some respect please”
“Mr. Honey, you are talking about respect here when you have none for me. I did nothing wrong to Briane. You are siding with her because of our past. Because she is from the rich side of the North. Years I have been bullied by her and not once did I punch or cause blood, because I am way more of a decent human being then she is, I did nothing wrong Mr. Honey”
“Fine Ms.Y/N I will call it at a draw and you will both have 2 nights of detention” You smiled to yourself. “However, you are on very, very thin ice considering you were just here a week ago for allegedly replacing the dead frogs with live ones in last weeks biology classes.”
“Mr. Honey…”
“No Ms. Y/N like I said thin ice do you understand”
“Yes sir I do”
“Good now get out of my office”
*Flashback Ended*
“For weeks now you had been warned daily of the thin ice you were on with Mr. Honey, but you kept your distance and your cool. You needed school, needed it to get out of riverdale and not have to deal with the treacherous town. You may have done all those things, but they were innocent pranks to only get back at the ones that wronged you. You needed to defend your turf, it was what you were always taught before your parents passed. Your grandmother engraving into your brain that you needed to protect yourself before protecting others.
School had been a hassle, every teacher constantly watching every move you made. Every student trying to get you out. No one at riverdale ever liked you, they always saw you as the problem child. The one who dressed in dark clothes, and caused trouble, but none of them knew you at all, or had been through or known the things that you have. You went by your day to day after the incident with Mr. Honey, trying to stay out of trouble as possible. You got a detention for not doing homework, but you never got in real trouble. That was until science lab 3rd period two weeks into your thin ice warning. You were paired up with Briane, for an experiment where a cloud of white would rise when the chemicals were combined. You were in charge of the base and she was in charge of the reactant. However, as soon as you looked away to wipe your hands off for safety she poured the entire bottle of reactant in before screaming at the top of her lungs.
“Briane! You are interrupting the other students what is the meaning of this”
“Y/N, Ms. Murphy Y/N put the entire bottle into the mixture” You turned around stunned, you hadn’t even been looking when she did it, and then you saw the bubbles arise and begin to pour over the smoke filling the air”
“Everyone out of the classroom this instant, we will have to have it cleared for safety. Ms. Y/Nand Ms. Briane come to the principal's office with me at once!”
“Mr. Honey before you say anything I didn’t do it, I swear on my life, I was washing my hands when it happened, I wasn't even paying attention”
“Ms. Briane would you like to say your side”
“Oh yes Mr. Honey thank you so much. Well I was minding my business writing down our lab results of the temperature because I had poured the base, and when I looked up Y/N was pouring the whole jar in, I tried to stop her but she just kept pouring and then I screamed because I was scared and Ms. Murphy came over. Oh gosh, I don’t know why she would ever think to do that if we had more harmful chemicals we all could have died!”
“Everything will be fine Ms. Briane, you can leave my office now”
“Thank you, sir”
“Now Ms. Y/N”
“Mr. Honey, I promise I didn’t do it”
“Well it seems there are other stories at play here, and in our previous meeting, I told you, thin ice. I have decided to transfer you to Southside High”
“No Mr. honey please!”
“It is out of my hands Ms. Y/N”
“No it is literally in your hands, you incompetent piece of shit, You know what. I am fucking glad that I am not going to be a part of this pretentious north siders can do no wrong school. Good riddens, asshole!”
“Ms...”
“Shut up, I’m grabbing my stuff and you’ll never see me again, and you know what I am sooo glad I don’t have to look at your stupid face ever again”
You left the school on a bad note but did it really matter when you were going to a school that barely had programs let alone taught the kids what they needed to know. It was as if your entire world crashed down. Your grades would decrease, your barely existent social life would now diminish completely, and most of all your mindset. You gave up on being the girl that was good at school, but bad on the outside.
You started not caring, picked up art. Learned how to tag and make it so your print was known enough to be you but not to be identified in your other works. You praised your art teacher and got very close with her very quickly. You confided in her, she herself was a student at Riverdale high at one point, kicked out because she lived on the southside and they found out. You related with her in a way you hadn’t with anyone else, but that didn’t stop you from doing way worse things than shit Riverdale high could ever fathom.
When you first got to southside high you completely painted your locker, not crazy but definitely not allowed. You took money from people, yeah you never spent any of it, actually put it in for charity collections, not that anyone knew that. Everyone knew you as the new kid, that just did bad shit. No one knew why no one knew your background or history and no one cared to know one bit. You liked it that way, you enjoyed the animosity. You then moved from the school to walk around the town after ditching for the day. You luckily still live in the house your parents had once owned on the northside, now it looked like a rundown abandoned building on the outside, guess that matched the way your life was turning. You tagged the entire gas station, then the park moving up the hills and down the valleys tagging everything in your sight. Art was your outlet and the southside, your canvas. You had no idea you caught the eyes of a gang called the ghoulies. You didn’t know the turfs, or the sides, you were just a visitor in a town with many rules and regulations you had no idea about. You made a mistake tagging the run-down building on the corner, officially in ghoulie territory. But no one had caused you trouble before, so you were not expecting to turn around and find 5 men and women around in black studded jackets.
“Hello…”
“NO bitch tagging our turf who the fuck are you”
“Wait… your turf?”
‘Yes, this is Ghoulie territory and we are taking you to the king” You had no idea what they were talking about, you felt a bang against the back of your head before you were out cold. You woke up slowly words being heard around you your vision slowly clearing from the blurriness
“Spraying our turf huh doll?” You have seen this guy, seen him around the school more often than you like to admit. He always seemed to be where you were, lurking around corners, and tagging his own spots how he would like, but you never said a word to him, your rule of keeping to yourself always in the back of your mind. You knew of the ghoulies enough to know people on the northside were afraid, but in reality, them all standing in front of you, they were no scarier than a group of 3-year-old children.
“What...? Just figured I'd have a little fun, turns out your ghoulies are a lot less scary than people think. Oh, y/n by the way and you are ...”
“Malachai... a lot scarier than people think, nice to meet you doll, boys let her go, and leave the room, I’ll deal with her”
“Deal with me, I like the sound of that” You were let go, dropped to the ground, as Malachai ushered the men out of the room. You got up finding a chair and putting your feet up and onto his desk that resided in the back of the room.
“Off”
“What? The big bad ghoulie is a germaphobe”
“Nah I just like shiny things, and you doll are currently on my radar” He swiped your feet off the desk before plotting on top.
“So what are you gonna do to me dear king?”
“Talk”
“Talk…”
“You are an enigma Y/N, I want to get to know you”
“No one ever does… what do you want from me?”
“Like I said you intrigue me, I just want to get to know who you are. We are… similar”
“I’m not sure we are…”
“Stay here…”
“Alright” Malachai came back with a photobook, a photo book that once we started flipping through you realized it was him, a boy living on the northside. A boy in a big house on cherry street, with a mother and father, and sister. Grandparents, Christmas parties and… then it was taken from you.
“You’re from the northside?
“Like I said we are similar”
“How did you know I am from the northside”
“Lucky guess I’d say”
“And you… lived there?” “There are a lot of things people don’t know about me, like I said we are similar Y/N”
“I wanna know how”
“Guess you’ll have to stay to find out”
“Apparently so”

Songfic Day 16: Don't Fear The Reaper
Tumblr media
Day 16: A song that’s a classic favorite: Don’t Fear The Reaper - Blue Oyster Cult
PART TWO:
Jughead Jones is tasked with protecting Betty Cooper, the reporter who had a hit put out on her life and had come to them for protection. Sure Betty is stunningly beautiful, but she digs under the skin like a knife.
She is determined to defy him until she gets caught in a terrifying situation and can’t help how her attitude changes once she sees that multiple sides of the future Serpent King.
*****
“Alright Princess, you’re with me,” Jughead gripped her hand tightly, dragging her out the room before she could protest, and up a second set of stairs to another locked door. Betty hated to admit that this dominant side of him did things to her, but she wasn’t about to show him that.
“If you’ll be so kind as to get the fuck off me,” she spat as she yanked her arm from him, “that’d be great. Where the hell are you taking me anyway? FP said to watch me, not lock me away in a tower Mother Gothel.”
Jughead placed his hand over his chest in mock offense, “Ouch, you wound me Rapunzel. I really think I identify more with Flynn Rider then Mother Gothel.”
“Why is your name Eugene and that’s why you go by Jughead?” Betty mocked him as they entered another hallway, this one with two doors across from one another.
“Believe me Princess, my real name is much worse then something as plain as Eugene. That name would be a blessing in my book,” Jughead chuckled as he unlocked the door on the left and dragged her through it, relocking the door behind him.
“Do you seriously feel it necessary to lock me inside? Where am I going to go, really?” she scoffed, “I mean it’s not like there are a lot of places that are especially safe for me right now.”
Betty noticed his demeanor change, his lips turning down into a scowl and his eyes darkening, “Don’t think I am gonna just up and trust a northsider just because she bats her pretty little eyelashes and gives my Dad some sob story about the Ghoulies. I don’t know you and I don’t trust you. So while we are stuck with each other, you will follow my rules or pay the piper. Got it, sweet cheeks?” he growled.
Betty felt her face flame in anger at his abrupt attitude shift and his blatant distrust of her for just being from a different side of town. She did her best to not judge the southside or the people that resided there. She shouldn’t be mistreated just for the prejudice of others and she sure as hell wasn’t gonna let some James Dean wannabe treat her with disrespect.
Betty stepped closer to him, narrowing her eyes and poking him in the chest with her index finger, “First off, this whole Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Douche-bag routine you got going on isn’t going to fly with me, so knock it the fuck off. As you said we are stuck with each other, so we might as well attempt to get along, for however long this takes. Secondly, the next time you call me sweet cheeks, you’re gonna get a taste of what your little friend downstairs got. You got that, asshole?”

*****
Jughead was legitimately speechless right now... Speechless and just a little bit turned on.
Never in his whole life growing up on the southside had anyone, male or female, stood up to him the way this girl had in the short span of a few hours. He couldn’t help the smirk his lips curled into as he wondered if she was just as feisty in the bedroom as she was at any other time.
Betty must have read his thoughts because her eyes narrowed at him again, “What?!”
“Nothing really, just...” Jughead paused as he leaned to whisper in her ear, grinning wider as her breath hitched, “If you wanted to top, all you had to do was ask, I’d be more than happy to switch and bottom for you anytime,” he chuckled at her shocked gasp.
“Well I never-” Betty started but Jughead simply laughed, flicking his thumb across his nose and smiling wider.
“Somehow I doubt that Princess,” he winked, walking into a room down the hall and closing the door behind him.
Jughead slumped against the door, his heart hammering in his chest and his body betraying his cool and calm facade. Jughead looked down at his erection, laughing to himself, You need to get it together, man. Girls like her are bad news and you damn well know it. So she’s hot? And what if she has spunk? She is here for protection, nothing more, nothing less. Don’t mix business.
Jughead pushed himself off the door, clicking the lock before gathering some clothes and heading to his bathroom to take a shower. A nice cold shower...
*****
Betty couldn’t move from her spot in the middle of his living room, staring at the closed door a few feet from her. Did he really just insinuate? And did I... I mean, did I like it??? Betty wondered, clenching her thighs together as she pictured exactly what he might be doing on the other side of that door. Jesus Cooper, reel it in, you’re acting like a teenager for God’s sake.
Her phone ringing pulled her from her thoughts and when she looked at the caller ID she saw that it was an unknown caller. Fighting the urge to throw it across the room and hide somewhere safe, she slowly answered, “Hello?”
“Hey there Blondie, miss me?”
“Malachi. To was do I owe this dishonor?” she rolled her eyes. She really regretted going undercover and getting involved with the Ghoulies and most especially Malachi. From everything she’d seen, he was ruthless. He had a blatant disregard for honor or empathy for other people. All he cared about was his money and his drugs. Oh, and power. That was what this scum lived on.
“Oh baby, now is that anyway to talk to the man that holds your life in his hands? Although I wouldn’t be mad to hold a lot more than that in my hands.”
Betty’s stomach turned at his sinister laugh, the thoughts of him touching her causing bile to rise in her throat. She shook it off, gathering her strength, "What the fuck do you want asshole?"
"You listen here bitch, I know where you are and who you are with. I have eyes on you already and that snake pit isn't gonna protect you."
Betty felt her blood run cold as her mind raced, How does he know where I am? I made sure no one followed me...
"Oh and if you think the Serpent Prince is going to be of any help to you, think again Cooper. Everyone has their price. How do you think I found out where you were? See you soon, Blondie."
As the like went dead, Betty dropped her phone to the carpet with a thud, her heart stuck in her throat. Had she really so gravely misjudged the Serpents that she walked right into a trap? Was that why he'd locked her in, so she couldn't get away? All Betty knew for certain was she wasn't sticking around to find out.
Betty gathered her things, looking for a way out. She could pick the lock but getting past a group of Serpents would prove almost impossible. She looked out of the window and saw a fire escape that lead all the way to the back alley. The window wouldn't budge so Betty had a choice to make.
And ultimately, Jughead was right. They didn't know each other, and there was no way in hell she was gonna trust him after what Malachi said to her and the things he knew.
Betty looked around, spotting a baseball bat by the front door but as she went to grab it she heard Jughead's voice calling from inside his room.
She raced to the window, smashing it with the bat and took off down the fire escape and into the night.
*****
"Princess, can you not hear me-"  Jughead's question was cut off by the sound of shattering glass and footsteps on the fire escape, "What the fuck?!"
Jughead watched as Betty raced down the metal stairs, looking back up at him with terror in her eyes. What the hell spooked her? Jughead didn't have much time to think. He grabbed his jacket and threw his boots on, thankful that he'd decided on jeans and a tank, grabbed his gun and took off after her.
"Where the hell do you think you're going!" he yelled, running faster after her. He didn't have any idea what she was doing or why she ran but he was determined to find out.
Jughead raced around a corner, eager to cut her off at the other end of the alley and figure out what the hell she was thinking when a scream made him freeze. He heard a scuffle, like she was fighting someone off when he heard a familiar voice.
"God, Malachi said you were gullible, but I think honestly you are the dumbest bitch I have ever seen." Tallboy? What did he mean Malachi?
"You know, I was just supposed to put you down but since I got you here all alone, I might as well have some fun first." Jughead heard her struggling again before a slap resonated through the air.
"Hold still bitch! I promise after I have my fun, I'll make sure you are nice and ready for Mal and the boys when I take you back to him." Tallboy laughed causing Jughead to snap.
He ran around the corner, gun drawn and ready, "Back the fuck away from her Tallboy or I swear to Christ, I will put you down."
Tallboy laughed, grabbing Betty by the throat and pressing her to his chest as a shield. Jughead could see the fear in her eyes as blood dripped from her nose and lip. His jaw tightened when he caught a glimpse of the bruise forming on her cheek.
"What are you gonna do you little piss ant? Oh, the mighty Serpent Prince, all fear him. Well, now I get to take you out myself, then I'm gonna hurt this little cunt real bad and hand her over to Malachi and no one will ever know." Tallboy ran his fingers along Betty's jawline as she struggled against him.
Jughead scoffed at his cockiness, "What makes you think no one will find out?"
"Cause no one figured out when I took out Joaquin, they won't figure it out now." Jughead growled at his confession, stepping closer to Tallboy and Betty.
"You are missing one glaringly obvious thing Tallboy, I never go anywhere without backup." Suddenly a shot rang out, the bullet catching Tallboy between the eyes and sending his body crashing to the ground.
Betty collapsed into tears on the gravel below, the shock of the situation turning into realization. Jughead stepped closer to her and scooped her into a bridal hold in his arms just as FP and a few others came running.
Jughead stopped in front of his Dad, Betty still in his arms and clinging to him for dear life, "Tallboy was the mole, he killed Quin and he's working with the Ghoulies. He tried- he tried to hurt Betty... Toni put a bullet in his forehead."
Jughead lifted her higher in his arms, whispering into her hair, "Don't worry Betty, I promise no one will hurt you as long as I'm around."

Childhood Memories pt.2/?
A/N: I’m sorry this took so long. I didn’t really edit, so I sincerely apologize for any errors Let me know if you want to be added to the taglist
part 1
I woke up with my whole body hurting. I didn’t really remember anything that happened the other night. I don’t even know where I am, at the moment. I try to push myself up slightly, but I could only get to lay on my elbows. Once I was up I could see that I was in my room at the House of the Dead. I looked around for my phone, but I assume Malachi had either destroyed it or taken it. Either way, I knew I wasn’t going to be able to get it back for a while.
I heard footsteps coming down the hallway, near my room. Then, Malachi opened my door.
“Oh, good you’re awake. Mackenzie, I’m so sorry for what I did. I shouldn’t have been that high in the first place and even though I was I shouldn’t have hurt you.” Although I could tell he meant it, I didn’t want to accept his apology.
“Malachi, I honestly can't accept your apology. Can I have my phone back?” I just wanted to make sure Sam was okay.
“If you plan on texting Serpent Boy, think again, sis,” he handed me my phone,” If I see that you texted him, you’ll regret it. Also, we have a meeting tonight at 5, be there.”
“Thanks, Mal.”
I missed at least 30 texts from every one of the Serpents. All extremely concerned for my well being. I was only out last night and this morning, so it wasn’t like I had gone into a coma or anything like that. But it was still bad, I was extremely sore and everything. I didn’t want to text them all back though. There were too many messages, so I thought I might go to Sunnyside Trailer Park. I knew it was dangerous and I might regret it, but they need to know that I’m ok.
I snuck out of the back window and walked through the backroads, so that way no one would notice. As long as I was back by 5-ish, I would be okay. I finally got close to Sunnyside Trailer Park when I saw the three bikes, I had grown so familiar with. I made it to where all the motorcycles were and realized that they were all at Fangs’ house. I struggled to walk up the stairs, but once I got up there I knocked, behind the door I could hear shuffling.
“Just a minute,” Fangs said, unlocking the door, “Mackenzie, what are you doing here?”
“I needed to make sure you all heard from me that I was ok. I’ll go now, I don’t want to be a bother. “
“No, Mackenzie, you’re not a bother,” I hissed in pain as Fangs grabbed my arm, ”Sorry, but come in.”
I rolled up my sleeve to see some bruises that I hadn’t noticed earlier. I walked into the trailer and noticed that Sam wasn’t there. Toni and Fangs both gave me hugs, but they also were extremely cautious knowing what had happened yesterday. I noticed the cuts and bruises from yesterday on Fangs and Toni.
“Guys, I’m so sorry that you guys got caught up in the fight. You didn’t ha-”
As one of the doors of the trailer opened behind me, I heard Sam, “Mackenzie, don’t apologize for that.
“But I, I have to-”
I was interrupted by Sam engulfing me in a hug. We had obviously hugged before, but this time it was different. I don’t know why maybe it was because he made me feel safe.
“Ok, break it up you two. What do you have to do?” Toni interrupted.
“I just needed to apologize for everything that happened. And before you tell me to stop I’m going to proceed. I can’t have you getting hurt because I’m friends with you.”
Fangs, Toni, and Sam all exchanged confused looks.
“Mack, what are you saying? You can’t be meaning what we think you do,” Fangs said.
“No, no, no, Mack, we will be okay,” Toni said. At this point, I was holding back tears. I knew I had to cut ties with anyone who had or could be hurt all because they were friends with me.
“I’m-I’m sorry. But I- I can’t, I can’t have you guys get hurt,” the tears were coming and they weren’t stopping at this point.  “I’m sorry, I have t-to go.” I started running out the door and was on my way back to the House of the Dead. I wasn’t expecting Sam to be behind me.
“Mack, you can’t just leave us behind. You can’t leave me behind,” he was exhausted from running, so everything he was saying was extremely breathy. “Mackenzie, please.” He caught up to me. I couldn’t face him, I just couldn’t. I couldn’t hurt him.
“Sam, please, just let me go,” I sighed, “ It will hurt us both less if you just let me go.”
“You know that isn’t true. I lost you before. I can’t lose you again. Please, we can figure this out.”
“There’s nothing to figure out, Sam. I’m a ghoulie, you’re a serpent. We live in completely different worlds. I’m supposed to be a part of the ghoulies, and with that comes a lot of baggage. I can’t have you be my weak spot. If I show I care about you, that’s a weakness.”
“Mack, please. Don’t leave.”
“Why? I can’t have you get hurt. I know about the fact…. Nevermind. I just can’t. Ok. Please accept my answer because there isn’t another one.”
“Wait, what fact do you know?”
“It doesn’t matter.”
“Mackenzie, what do you know?”
I stopped walking. Sam walked right up to me. I couldn’t look him in the eye though.
“Mackenzie, look at me,” he pushed up my chin and forced me to look at me, “ please.”
The tears started coming, again. “Sam, I-I know how you feel about me. I overheard you the night I stayed over, when you were,” I laughed to myself, “talking to yourself in the mirror.”
“So, that’s the reason you’re dropping all of us?”
“No, no, no. It’s not, It’s just that since I feel the same, it could easily be used against me.” I started walking again.
“Wait, what did you just say?” I could hear the smirk in his voice, which made me want to punch him.
“You-” I was interrupted by the feeling of lips on mine. The kissed was somewhat rushed and messy, but the feelings behind it were very strong. I had been kissed before, but this felt so different from the other ones. This one actually meant something.
“Hmm. What were you saying?”
“You heard me,” I said extremely annoyed.
I looked down when I flashed back to reality. I would have to leave him soon. I wasn’t sure how I was going to do that now.
“ Sam, you know this doesn’t change the fact of me cutting you off. I can’t get you hurt because of me.”
“Mack, I will be fine. With or without you. Hopefully not the latter. But even if I get hurt over the simple fact that our worlds are opposite, I’ll be ok.”
“We don’t know that Sam, we don’t. I can’t have Malachi going after you, I just can’t okay.”
“Mack, I’ve waited since we were 13 to tell you and then, we lost touch because of me. I can’t go through that again, please. “
“I want this as much as you do, but we can’t. It’s too risky, for both of us.”
We were both quiet for a few minutes. Obviously still stunned by the events that had occurred a few moments prior.
“I have to head home, but I’ll text you. Okay”
“Okay,” he said, with a look of defeat on his face.
I got home about 30 minutes before the meeting with whoever. I wasn’t trying to get caught texting Sam, so I had to change his name on my phone. I didn’t want this whole situation to escalate any more than it had to.
“Hey Mackenzie, we need to talk.” I heard the very familiar voice of my brother say.
“About?”
“I wanted to apologize to you. I haven’t been a good brother and uh, I’ve been using the drugs and hurting you to try and get my emotions out, which I definitely shouldn’t do. I really want you to help me run this, I know how you feel about the drugs, so I’m trying to stop. Please forgive me.”
This apology actually seemed genuine and I could tell he was actually making an effort.
“I can definitely try, Mal.”
That was the first genuine conversation Malachi and I had had since dad died. It felt great, but I didn’t think it would last. Mal held his hand out and I wasn’t sure what he wanted me to do, then I remembered the handshake we had when we were younger. Everything felt like it might actually start going well again. The meeting with the serpents started in about 15 minutes and I was actually going to help Malachi make this deal.
Malachi gave me the run through on what was happening. Apparently, Jughead Jones was trying to make a deal with us to stop dealing as much while still keeping the peace between Ghoulies and Serpents. I knew Malachi wouldn’t stop until necessary, this was how we made money. But Jughead had come in earlier to talk when he found out was one of his fellow Serpents were working with us. So now we are here, Jughead Jones and a redhead wearing a Riverdale High Varsity Jacket.
“So unless your highness wants to put some of daddy’s territory out on the table, I got no reason to-” Malachi was going all in and was ready to bet the most on this drag race. But he wasn’t going to until they offered some of their territories. His sentence was interrupted by Vern storming in, followed by two girls who the boys inside obviously recognized.
“They were following me, tried to get into the garage.”
I started to laugh, they honestly thought that they wouldn’t get caught trying to come into the house of the dead.
“So these are your bitches?” Malachi said pointing to the girls, whose names I learned were Betty and Veronica.
“Mal now is not the time for that.” He needed to calm down and I knew he was about to get 10x worse.
“And she’s yours?” Archie, I guess his name was, said.
“ I beg your misogynistic pardon?” Veronica and I said almost in unison.
I started dying laughing and no one but Malachi, who was also laughing, knew why. The other teens in the room had a look of confusion on their face. “No, I’m his sister.” They all looked shocked and then realized how much we looked alike.
They finally arranged for a drag race to happen the next morning and the territories the winner would get. If we won it would be amazing for us or at least Mal, but it would be absolutely awful for the Serpents.
Between the time of the deal and the race, Mal and I seemed to have gotten closer. We bonded over working on the car. It was as if things never changed. I wasn’t sure how long this feeling would last, but I would make sure to live it to the fullest.
The street race was divided, Ghoulies, Serpents, and the Northsiders that you would assume were friends with Jughead. I had no idea what the outcome of the race would be, but I didn’t really care.
“Earth to Mack,” Malachi said, obviously seeing the exchange of glances between Sam and me in front of him.
“Hmm?” you replied. “Who’s driving with you, Mal?”
You were hoping that he would choose you, but in a way, you were hoping you wouldn’t so that you could talk to Sam.
“I would choose you, but I can’t have you getting hurt. You know if this goes wrong, Mack-”
“It won’t,” I said it so confidently that Mal had no reason to argue. I couldn’t lose him after things had just started to get fixed between us. I can’t lose him again, figuratively or literally.
“Ok, Mack. I love you.”
“I love you, too.”
The race was about to start, I had this weird feeling in my stomach, but I ignored it because it could be just nerves. As the race finally started, I gained enough courage to go over and see Sam.
He noticed me coming and excused himself from the conversation. I couldn’t help but smile at his kind gesture.
“What are you doing? The other Ghoulies could see.” Sam said, his voice laced with panic.
“It’s fine, Sam. Don’t worry that pretty little head of yours,” I stood on my tiptoes and booped his nose.
“ Come on, let's get out of here. The race will be over so-”
“EVERYONE SCATTER!”
Ricky’s voice continued, but you weren’t really listening. You didn’t notice, but everyone around you was yelling and Sam was doing all he could to get you to move.\
“Mack, come on, we need to go now.”
Everything that happened after felt like a blur. I didn’t know what I was going to do without Malachi here every day. I couldn’t cope without him. I had no family, no stable home, and not many friends. I ended up at Sam’s trailer, he carried me to bed, so that way I could try to calm down as things were figuring themselves out. Sam laid me down and brought out some of his clothes in case I wanted to change. As he started to walk out of his room, I felt an ache in my chest.
“Can you stay here with me?” I said it so quietly, there was a possibility of him not hearing me. But he stopped, clearly weighing his options. As he climbed into his bed, the smell of him surrounded me, and I felt safer.
I had fallen asleep and I don’t know how long I was out, but I woke up to my phone ringing. I quietly got up, trying not to wake Sam.
“Hello?”
“Mack, are you ok?”
I finally let out a breath, I didn’t know I was holding in.
“Mal? What- I- Are you ok?”
“Yes, I’m in only for a few months.”
“Only a few months? Malachi, I can’t be on my own.”
“And you aren’t. You have the Ghoul-”
“No, I mean I can’t be without you. I have no one else. We finally fixed things and now what? You’re going to be gone for three months,” tears were threatening to fall.
“Mack, you are going to be ok. I’m leaving you in charge while I’m gone. I already let the others know that you’d take over if anything happened to me.”
“You can’t possibly expect me to do that.”
“I believe in you and trust you. Don’t make any bad deals and if I find out about anything involving the serpents, you’ll regret it.”
“Malachi, I ca-” the call ended.
“Who was that?” Sam’s voice being a breath of fresh air at this moment.
“Oh, uh, it was nobody.”
He gave me a look saying he knew I was lying. “Mack, who was it.”
“It was Malachi.”
“What did he want?”
Come up with a good lie. You can’t tell him.
“Just, uh... Ghoulie stuff.”
He glared at me. I couldn’t tell him that I, Mackenzie Martinez, was the new leader of the Ghoulies and I could no longer be friends with him or any other Serpent. I couldn’t, he just got me back. I felt awful telling him that it was Ghoulie stuff, but now wasn’t the time to tell him.
SAM’S POV
Ever since Mackenzie had gotten back from talking to Malachi, she seemed off. Something obviously happened during that phone call and she was hiding it. I always knew Mackenzie was a terrible liar, so it was easily known that she was trying to piece together a cover-up for what was discussed on the phone.
She seemed fairly uneasy and extremely fidgety. She was obviously hiding something, but I didn’t want to press on the issue, especially considering the events that have occurred today. I decided to invite Toni and Fangs over for a movie night, in hopes of cheering her up.
Everything had been going fine until Mackenzie got another phone call. Toni, Fangs, and I were in the small kitchen in my trailer as we all heard Mackenzie obviously yelling at whoever called her. We didn’t want to say anything when she came back in fear of setting her off again. She started to look around for her stuff, obviously trying to leave.
“Mack,” I said, walking towards her. She didn’t respond, she just continued getting the stuff she had all together. I called her name a few more times, but she never responded. She was rushing over to the door when I stopped her. She tried pushing me away to get through, it wasn’t until I grabbed onto her wrists that she finally stopped.
“Mackenzie, where are you going? You can stay here, I already said you could.”
“No, I-, I need to go,” she sniffled, “Yeah, I need to go.” She tried to push past me again, but I stopped her. I hadn’t noticed she had been crying until her eyes finally met mine. As she did, she finally broke down. I pulled her into my arms and just held her. Toni brought over a glass of water and then, Toni and Fangs excused themselves. She continued sobbing for a while, it wasn’t for a while that I heard her breath start to steady itself.
“Sam, I- There’s something I need to talk to you about.”
“Me too, Mack. If this is about us, I don’t care about the divide between gangs, we can figure it out. And with your brother in jail, you can maybe leave the Ghoulies.”
“You know I can’t do that,” she said sternly, “Uh, but it’s not about that. I’m sure we could work it out, but I know for sure it won’t work out now.”
“Mack, you can’t assume that it won’t work, we have to try.”
“I can’t.”
“What do you mean you can’t?” I had unintentionally started yelling. She visibly flinched from beside me.
“I- I’m the new temporary leader of the Ghoulies.”
MACKENZIE’S POV
Sam visibly tensed. I got back up, assuming he’d make me leave.
“You know you can stay, I don’t care about that. I love you for you.”
“You love me?” my voice raised an octave and I hadn’t intended it to.
“Yeah. So what do you say? Officially be my girl?”
“Of course.”
We sat there in comfortable silence for a few moments. Neither of us wanted to leave, even though we knew I would have to soon. This moment would have been so much easier if we didn’t have to deal with the stress of the gangs, but they were our family and we wouldn’t want it any other way.

family ties.
Malachy. The O’Connells have to face the worst moments of their lives.
(...)
So, the day was July 22nd 2016 and it was, I dunno, the later part of the evening. Mal was working late and it happened on his way home. His car got hit by a truck on the drivers’ side. The truck driver didn’t pay attention, he was tired after a long week and fell asleep momentarily. It’s not a real consolation but Mal didn’t suffer, in fact he didn’t even realise what was happening. He just saw the huge lights, so close to him, and then nothing.
Chloe was at home, tidying up the house a bit and getting slightly mad at her hubby for not coming home at the time he promised. He wanted to bring their dinner after all. She checked her watch, only to check it again five minutes later and she had been doing that the entire evening. Sam was staying at a friend’s house and Rory wasn’t feeling well so he already went to sleep.
“Screw you, O’Connell. You could at least give me a damn call?!” she murmured to herself. “Instead you’re making me starve, I can’t believe it. You’re so not gonna get laid tonight.” She stopped and scratched her head. “Who am I even talking to? My god, I’m going insane.” Chloe scoffed at herself, and she grabbed her book and was just about to make herself comfy on her couch when her phone buzzed.
“There you go.” she sighed, reaching for her phone. It wasn’t Malachy, though. It was Sarah who didn’t even bother to wait for Chloe to say anything.
“This is it, Chloe. Ye can tell yer dear husband that I’ve had it with him.”
“Sarah.” Chloe answered reluctantly and she frowned. “What’s goin’ on?”
“He didn’t even call, he just didn’t show up. He promised to stop by at seven and now it’s almost ten. Not that he didn’t even bother to call us, he won’t pick up his phone either. Tell him to get lost, that’s not how ye treat your ma and pa?!”
“Sarah-”
“Look, it’s not that I don’t get that people at a certain age rather spend time with their significant other,” - she emphasised those last few words and Chloe smiled to herself at the mocking tone of it -, “than their parents but dammit, I gave birth to this little fucker! Twenty-one hours of labor and I’m not even worth a call?!”
Despite Sarah’s rage that she, being a mother herself, could very well understand, Chloe had to chuckle. “I’m sorry. He’s a despicable human being and I’m gonna tell him.”
“Tell him he’s an ungrateful little shit, too.”
“Of course. Will do once he gets home, I promise.”
“Wait, what? He isn’t even home yet?”
“Nah, I was just about-”
The doorbell rang. Still holding the cell phone to her ear, Chloe hurried to the entrance hall. Peeking through the door’s window, she saw two men clad in dark blue uniforms. “Sarah, I’m sorry, I’m gonna call you back, okay?” she mumbled into the phone, startled at the sight of the two Gardai on her front porch. Chloe put her phone in her pocket and then she opened the door.
To this day, she can’t really recall that particular evening. Looking back, it felt like she left her body in that moment and watched the events of the evening through someone else’s eyes and with a certain distance. There was a lot of “We’re sorry.” and “Do you need us to do anything else, Mrs O’Connell?” and she remembers this really insane moment when her only thought was that Malachy was supposed to get them dinner and that she was still starving.
She felt a bit like what she supposed a robot to feel like - she merely functioned and did what had to be done. She woke up Rory and called the parents of the friend Sam was staying at, giving them a quick update on what happened and that she’d appreciate it if they could help Sam to get ready so she can pick him up in about twenty minutes.
She also called Sarah back, asking her to tell Declan and Orla and she called Kieran on his cell phone before she made her way to the hospital to see her husband for what she feared would be the last time.
***************
Sarah just stood there, frozen on the spot, not quite believing what her daughter in law had just told her. She dropped her phone on the couch, closing her eyes and taking a deep breath.
This could not be true. It was impossible.
“Sarah. Darling, what is it?” Sean asked again, sounding alarmed and squeezing his wife’s upper arm a little, to make her snap back to reality.
“Malachy. There was-” Sarah took another breath. “There was - he had an accident.”
Sean felt his guts turn to ice. “An accident. Dear lord. But he’s… he’s alright, isn’t he?” He could feel his voice shaking.
“We have to get going, Sean, and we have to get a hold of Orla and Declan. I mean, where are these two, anyway?” Sarah hissed and hastily looked for her phone, remembering that she had just dropped it on the couch a minute ago. “Chloe was about to call Kieran just now and-”
“Sarah.” Sean insisted and grabbed his wife by her shoulders. “Sarah, darling, talk to me. Is Malachy alright?”
Sarah looked her husband in the eyes and that was when Sean knew. He just knew by seeing his wife’s expression. He nodded and swallowed.
“Where did they take him?” he merely asked.
“University hospital.”
Sean nodded again and he was about to go and get his things when Sarah held him back.
“Sean? Our boy is there. In some dark and cold room. All alone.” she said sternly, but her voice cracked. Sean could tell she was fighting hard to hold it all back.
He couldn’t help but admire her.
“Not for very much longer.” Sean assured his wife.  “We’ll be there in less than ten minutes. You call the twins, I’ll get everything ready and I’ll wait outside in the car for you.”
Sarah nodded, touching Sean’s cheek.
“Hurry.”
***************
Kieran sat at his desk in the bureau and he had been battling a few stacks of paper for a while. It has been an unusually quiet day at the bureau and he had spent all day here, catching up on a few things and doing some dreaded paperwork.
“Fuckin’ Friday night and I got nothin’ better to do than this. That’s it, I’m officially pathetic.” he murmured, highlighting another line in that report in front of him.
“I’m impressed by your work ethic. It’s not like you have to do this? Everyone else went home already. Not you though?” his new colleague, Evelyn, responded cheerfully.
Kieran looked up from his paper and gave her a dry laugh. “Yeah, rub it in. I like that.”
“Nah I didn’t mean it in a weird way?”
“This isn’t about work ethic, it’s really just about me having nothin’ else to do today.” Kieran replied wearily.
“Aw, come on, I can’t believe that a guy like you doesn’t have someone waitin’ for him somewhere.”
“You’re not makin’ this any better, Ev.” Highlighting another line at the bottom of his paper, Kieran now lazily turned the page. He frowned. “This is bullshit, I don’t even know what I’m reading here.” he mumbled and tossed the paper a few inches away from him.
“Wow, you’re crabby today. It sounds like there is someone after all, though?”
“No, that’s not what I said? There isn’t.” Kieran sighed. “I mean, not… not really.”
Evelyn put her pen away and leaned back in her chair. “Do tell. And don’t even try to change the subject… I’ve studied human behaviour long enough to be able to tell that somethin’s been weighing on your mind for a while and I’ve been in love long enough to link that particular circumstance to what you just said.” she concluded with a firm nod.
Kieran raised an eyebrow. “You… only talk so you can listen to yourself talkin’, right?”
“Sometimes, yeah. Not this time, though. Come on, tell me about it. Who is she? Or he?”
Kieran gave her another sigh but the prospect of just talking to someone unrelated about it actually was strangely tempting.
“It’s not like it matters anyway. She’s… in Boston, y’know. And I’m here. Doin’ fuckin’ paperwork on a Friday night.”
“Boston, huh? How would you end up with a girl in Boston anyway?”
“We didn’t end up - I just, I dunno, I go there a few times a year. Great city. Met her years ago already and, well-”
Kieran’s phone started buzzing. Startled by the sound of it, he looked at the caller’s ID.
“Chloe?” he muttered, confused.
“So her name’s Chloe?” Evelyn asked.
Kieran made a little gesture with his hand to shut Evelyn off and he picked up his phone. He didn’t really know where the feeling came from but having his sister in law call him at eleven in the night was highly unusual and he felt his stomach turn.
“Chloe? Yeah, of course it’s me… what is it?”
Evelyn watched Kieran’s expression turning to stone. “Uh-oh.” she thought.
“How… when?” Kieran let out a heavy breath. “I’m at work. I’ll be there - no I’ll be there, okay? I’ll be there in a few hours. Chloe, listen - I’ll be there. I’ll get into my car in five seconds and I’ll be there. There’s no way I’m stayin’ here, alright? Gimme a few hours. Okay. Okay! We’re wasting time… yeah, okay. Do what you gotta do, tell the others that I’m on my way, okay? Yeah. I will. Bye.”
“Oh my god, what was that?” Evelyn asked carefully.
“I gotta go. I can’t explain. I, I - I gotta go, Ev. I’m sorry.” Kieran stammered, grabbing together his belongings and without any further word, he left the office.
“Of course…” she nodded. “Go! Wherever you go, drive carefully?” she called after him.
“Oh, the irony.” Kieran thought to himself while he was rushing out of the building. He felt his heart racing while he ran to the bureau’s parking lot and when he eventually got to his car, he flung its door open, threw his jacket on the passengers’ seat and got into the car, slamming the door shut behind him.
“Fag. Now.” he thought and frantically searched the pockets of his jacket for the little package, as well as the glovebox. He couldn’t find anything.
“Oh fuckin’ HELL, it was there earlier?!” Kieran cursed to himself and he felt devastation, anger and helplessness rising up inside him. He slumped back into the driver’s seat in frustration and realised only now that he was shaking like a leaf. He gripped the steering wheel with both of his hands. “Focus, O’Connell. Calm down. You can’t go anywhere like this.” he thought to himself. Taking a few firm breaths, he calmed down enough to remember that he had put his cigarettes into the pocket of his jeans. He shifted a bit on the seat and pulled them out, opening the car’s door again.
Kieran lit the cigarette up and took a first pull, inhaling deeply. His breath was still shaky. Leaning back into the seat again, he closed his eyes and swallowed down a sob. He was in no way ready for this. He wasn’t ready to start the engine, to leave Dublin, to enter a world that Malachy O’Connell was no longer a part of. If he just stayed here, in his car, in the parking lot, he could just pretend for another little while that it wasn’t true. It was a childish thought, he knew it. Childish but very, very tempting.
A few minutes later Kieran had gathered himself together enough to take the dreaded way home. He left his best friend Rachel a text message, “Won’t be home for a few days. I’ll call you as soon as I can.” and left the parking lot, driving off into the unknown.
***************
“Alright, lads and ladies - last call for today!” Rosamund called. The pub was already empty, except for a few older guys sitting in the corner at the window and her young (and secret favourite) guests who had occupied the seats at the bar around her.
“Nah, way too soon!” Mick exclaimed indignantly. “Discussion ain’t over yet, no one goes anywhere until we settled this.”
“What did he say?” Rosamund hissed, turning to Orla and Jessie. “I swear, any time this kid opens his mouth I only hear gibberish!”
“Don’t look at me.” Jessie held up her hands in defense, “I don’t speak O’Loughlin. She does, though.” She pointed to Orla.
Orla nodded enthusiastically. “I do and I don’t quite believe I’m sayin’ this but he has a point.”
“I love how y’all talkin’ about me as if I wasn’t there.” Declan now chimed in. “I’ll have another half pint, Rose. Please.”
“How polite.” Rosamund chuckled. “Samantha likes ‘em polite.”
“Not you, too. Gosh! Stop talking about me already?”
“As if you don’t like being talked about?” Jessie scoffed.
“When I’m not there, sure?! You guys are discussing my love life-”
“Lack thereof.” Mick interrupted.
“- or the lack thereof while I am here, though.” Declan now turned to his best friend, crossing his arms. “Jesus fuckin’ Christ, which side are you on after all?”
“On yours! Always was, always will be. I say - ask her out. I mean, where’s the harm in tryin’ after all? She likes ya.”
“I can’t ask a woman out who’s ten years older. Besides, I don’t even like her… y’know, that way but for some reason no one believes me anyway. Thanks.” he added when Rosamund handed him his half pint. “Also, she has a kid.”
“So do you.” Orla frowned.
“That’s different.”
“How’s that different?”
Rolling his eyes, Declan groaned, as if Orla was just dense for missing his point. “It just is.”
“Aw man, we all just want you to be happy, Dipso.” Jessie laughed and she reached out to pat Declan’s cheek but he was having none of it and briskly pushed her hand away.
“Now ya made him mad, Jess.” Mick said, just lighting himself another cigarette, when all of a sudden his phone in front of him started buzzing. “What the fuck. Not now.” he murmured and picked the phone up. Turning away from the group a bit, he looked at the caller’s ID, frowned a little and answered the call.
“I’m not mad, I’m not frustrated and I am not in love, alright?” Declan went on. “It’s about time you guys get that into your heads. Can’t we just make fun of someone else now? Look, Mick’s talking to someone on the phone. Let’s tease him. I hope it’s the concert lady from two weeks ago, that would have teasing potential.”
“Actually…it’s for you.” Mick had just turned around on his seat again, looking clearly confused. “Any of you two.” He looked at Declan, then at Orla, holding his phone out to them. “It’s Sarah and she sounds upset.”
Not quite understanding the situation, Declan made a face. “What? Sarah? Our mother Sarah?”
“Aye.” Mick gave a little nod, looking at the phone and up again, indicating that Declan should take it.
“What the-”
“Take it already.” Orla urged him.
“Okay, okay.” Declan took the phone and held it up to his ear. “Ma, what’s up? Don’t have my phone with me today, sorry. So, you wanna take part in the discussion about my poor love life? You’re gonna love it, it’s- what? Come again? … oh my god.” He looked up at Orla, waving her over to him.
“What’s going on?” Orla whispered impatiently but Declan only pulled her closer to his side, gripping her upper arm tightly. “Ow, Dec, what-”
“No, we’re on our way. Yeah. No, we’ll get a cab or somethin’, ya’ll stay where you are. Yeah, see you in a bit.” He hung up and gave Mick his phone back. He then turned to his sister, reaching up and holding her face in both of his hands. “We gotta go. Now.”
“Declan, you’re scaring me. What’s going on?” Orla inquired, already feeling slightly nauseous.
“Mal had an accident… earlier this evening.” Declan’s voice broke and breathed out. “He - he didn’t make it.” It almost sounded like a question.
“What?” Orla muttered, her voice soft, and she looked at her brother, utterly confused, her blue eyes huge and Declan’s heart broke a little further at the sight of her expression.
“Cab me arse, I’ll drive.” Mick took a last pull of his cigarette and flicked it away. “C’mon!” he called, already making his way outside the pub.
“You want me to- I don’t know what to say, I-” Jessie stammered, looking like she got hit by a freight train and she was at a clear loss at what to do now. “I should probably pay our tab, though, I mean, we can’t just-”
“You kids leave. Screw the tab.” Rosamund interrupted her. “Just go! I’m closing NOW.” she called into the direction where the older guys were still sitting. “The three of you get out already! I mean it, forget the tab!”
“Let’s go. C’mon.” Declan nudged Orla, who just kept wiping her silent tears away, and took Jessie’s hand and they all followed Mick outside.
He drove them to the hospital, and no one said a single word. Declan and Orla had taken the backseat, holding on to each other and Jessie had taken the passengers’ seat, reaching out her hand (in a rather uncomfortable way but she didn’t care) to Declan and Orla behind her who both had taken it. She looked over to Mick who just seemed to concentrate on the traffic but she knew he was shaken. She would take care of him once they dropped the twins off at the hospital.
When they did, Orla turned around one last time, sniffing slightly. “Thank you. I’ll call you guys once I- once I can.”
“Go!” Jessie hushed her and her and Mick watched the two hurrying into the building.
********************************************
So, that’s how everyone got notified and the hospital got filled with O’Connells and they all were in this really weird state in which you can’t really wrap your head around what had just happened. They all knew it was huge but none of them could even begin to think of the impact the incident would have on their lives.
Everyone was tired and worn out and just there, trying to keep going, supporting each other, not really knowing where else to go and not really knowing what they were waiting for either since there was nothing that could be done for Malachy. None of them really wanted to leave him there all alone just yet, though, and if that meant that they had to stay in that hospital corridor until someone would finally tell them to go, they would do it. The nurses on the floor were really nice and understanding, though, providing them a free room with a few beds so at least Chloe, Sam and Rory could get a bit of rest.
Declan didn’t say a single word the entire night, he just responded by nodding or shaking his head but apart from that, his mind was somewhere else, far from everyone else. Orla couldn’t stop crying, the sleeves of her shirt were soaked and she made sure to get a hug every ten or so minutes. Kieran was busy functioning, just like Chloe. He was the one who talked to the nurses and who even joked with them, not really knowing how to channel his emotions. He even felt strangely alright and he didn’t know at this point that it would hit him a few days later, without mercy and with full force, at work in the restroom.
They all experienced for the first time what it feels like when there’s absolutely nothing left to say. It’s what all of them had in common that night, each of them dealing with it in their very own way.
At some point they all decided that it was time to leave, though. Sarah and Sean accompanied Chloe and the boys home and stayed with them and Kieran took the twins to his parents’ house.
“I don’t wanna sleep in my old room. I don’t wanna sleep at all. Not yet.”
It was the first thing Declan had said ever since he got the news. He kicked off his shoes in the hallway and went straight to the living room, starting to take the cushions off the furniture, throwing them right in front of the fireplace.
“What are you doing?” Orla asked, confused, once again sniffing a little. She felt a bit better but the tears just kept coming back and she no longer cared about hiding them.
Kieran had picked up Declan’s thoughts, though, and he smiled. “Come on.” He gently took Orla’s arm and took her with him. He went over to the large cupboard and pulled a few drawers open. He took out a blanket and tossed it at her. “Catch!”
“Have you two lost your mind?” she asked, barely catching the blanket she now saw flying into her direction. “HEY!”
“Maybe we have lost our minds.” Declan began and gave his sister a surprise hug from behind. “This is a bit of a tough situation though and I know you know what those call for.”
“A contemplation castle!” Orla gasped, finally getting what her brothers were up to.
“That was the idea.”
They had done that as kids in the past every so often. Whenever something happened that needed a bit of thinking or whenever they had to come up with a plan for whatever the issue was or whenever they were just sad or moody, Orla and Declan had built themselves a pillow fort. Teenage Kieran had often lovingly mocked their forts, “Don’t bother looking for Orla and Declan, they’re stuck in contemplation castle.”, but he had found himself sitting with the two sometimes, bringing them sweets and, as their older, more experienced brother, trying to give some insight on the situation they were facing. His troubled seventeen year old self even sat in one of their forts all alone for a little while, after the twins had already left it. He didn’t really believe it but he hoped that the fort would have a reassuring effect on him as well and to this day he feels that it somehow did.
So the three grown up O’Connell siblings built themselves what would probably be their last fort and they crawled into it, laying down next to each other, Orla in the middle. She took her brothers’ hands and they would just lay there and talk nonsense and share silly anecdotes, even laughing heartily at things every so often.
“You know what? We’re all gonna have terrible back aches when we wake up tomorrow.” Orla said eventually. “Ugh, I already feel it.”
“I know. I don’t mind.” Kieran replied.
“Me neither.” Declan agreed.
None of them dared to speak on what they all had in their minds in this very moment, though: that this was probably their last cheerful moment together for a long while and that their backaches would be nothing compared to their heartaches.
When Sarah and Sean came home the next morning and found their three grown up kids peacefully sleeping next to each other on the living room’s floor, Sarah burst out crying. She was incredibly touched to see what the three had done and she was proud to be their mom and at the same time it had just hit her that it would never ever be like this again. Their lives had just been shaken to the core and they all would get pulled back into reality really soon. Sean held his sobbing wife close to him but she recovered pretty quickly.
“I don’t know how, darling, but we’ll make this.” Sean whispered into her ear, standing behind her and gently rubbing her upper arms.
“Sean O’Connell, the cheerful optimist.” Sarah smiled wearily, not knowing at this point whether she really believed him.
“Cheerful? Not so much, I’m afraid.”
They stood there for a moment, silently, letting their words sink in.
“I want everyone here today, Sean.” Sarah now suggested, reaching for the coffee can.
“What do you mean?”
“Well, I’m gonna make coffee and then we wake up the kids. We can all rest a bit but I want everyone to come over to our house today. Chloe and the boys - oh, we should probably call Father Moore - “
“Sarah, I don’t know if that’s such a good idea.” Sean interrupted her and shook his head. “This hardly calls for a party after all-”
“Oh don’t gimme that crap now, O’Connell.” Sarah snapped. “Ya think I don’t know what just happened? This ain’t gonna be a party? Ya think I’m gonna shout it from the rooftops? Ya think I’m gonna invite old widow Clarke and her fucking little shit of a barking mutt?”
“You… better not?”
“I want Chloe and the boys here. Father Moore, if he can make it. Jessica and Michael. Lauren and Ash. They all deserve to be here, Sean. I don’t wanna pretend to have a jolly good time, I want the whole family around. I am not ready to deal with this on my own yet.” Sarah could feel her voice shaking again.
“You won’t have to?”
“Ye know what I mean.” Sarah pouted and crossed her arms.
If the situation hadn’t been so tense, Sean would have laughed at his wife’s reaction. It wasn’t funny at all, though, and he chose his next words carefully. “I’m not saying we can’t do this, I just don’t want to watch you denying-”
“One last day. That’s all I ask for.”
“One last day?”
“I mean, Kieran has to go back to Dublin anyway, he can’t just stay here for weeks, to support his ma and pa. I want one last day before the lights go off, Sean.”
Knowing too well what his wife was referring to, Sean nodded eventually. “Go and make coffee. I’ll wake the mob.”

Chapter 1 here
Carrie pulled her helmet off, running her fingers through her hair to work out the snarls that had worked their way in during the ride here. She’d almost put her hair up in a ponytail before she left, but she’d wanted to curl it and leave it down. She sighed heavily, pulling one earbud out and shifting her backpack to one shoulder before pulling her phone out and typing a quick text to Mal, who had insisted that she tell him when she got there.
Carrie: Since you insisted I tell you, I made it to school. And for the record, I feel like a little kid texting their parent to say they made it safe and I hate you for that.
Malachi: Smartass. Keep your chin up and show those Northsiders who you are. And for the love of god please don’t pick a fight. I don’t want to have to deal with Northsiders today.
Carrie: And you think I do? I won’t pick a fight, I’m not that stupid.
Malachi: Says the one who almost ate cereal with a fork this morning because she was half asleep.
Carrie: Shut the fuck up, it’s not my fault I was up until 2 in the morning because someone decided to go get in a fight with Serpents and I had to take care of his ass.
Malachi: Get to class.
Carrie: See, you know I’m right.
Malachi: Sure, sure, whatever helps you sleep at night.
She slipped her phone back in her pocket, tugging her jacket tighter around her shoulders. She’d gone with the slightly less studded leather jacket this morning, and had stolen Mal’s wrist guards to make up for it. She slid off her bike and headed towards the front doors of Riverdale High, taking note of the eyes that were drawn to her and flitted away just as quickly. She couldn’t help the slight smirk that she could feel on her face, and she wore it like armor as she pulled the door open, officially sealing her fate. The first thing that struck her was the fact that there weren’t any metal detectors. She was so used to the sight of them at Southside that it threw her off for a moment.
There was sunlight streaming through the intact windows, shining warm and soft  over the walls and floors. The lockers was actually securely bolted to the walls, and everything was oddly clean. Carrie walked straight past the crowd of Northsiders who had gathered in the foyer to watch her come in, making a beeline for the front office, which she found due to the numerous signs pointing her that way. Her eyes took in her surroundings, from the door to the bathrooms to the cheerful billboards covered in bright flyers.
A pit of resentment settled in her chest at the thought of the difference between Riverdale High, with its shining, clean halls and Southside High, with its boarded over windows and lockers that looked like they were about to falls off the walls at any moment. The privilege of the Northsiders hadn’t officially sunk in until she was standing here, staring in disgust and awe at the trophy case right outside the office. With a sigh, she yanked open the office door and slipped inside, catching the eye of the kid standing in front of the desk. She was waiting for his eyes to flicker down to her jacket, and sure enough, they did. He still walked up to her, holding out his hand for her to shake.
“You must be Carrie Weylyn. I’m Kevin Keller, your peer escort.” She shook his hand, releasing him quickly due to the bandage still wrapped around her knuckles, which had split open again while she slept, but he barely seemed to react.
“Keller?” Immediately, she could see the flash of irritation in his eyes, so she didn’t finish her question. “Right. So you’re supposed to show me around this glorious building that screams privilege from every corner?” She was surprised when he laughed at her comment.
“Yep. Normally Betty Cooper does it, but she’s busy with the newspaper today, so I volunteered to escort the big bad Southsider around.” He was surprisingly blunt, something she couldn’t help but appreciate. She almost laughed, shaking her head.
“Ms. Weylyn. If I could speak with you for just a moment before Mr. Keller escorts you around.” Carrie turned to face the man who’d spoken. Everything from his clothes to his posture screamed ‘preppy high school principal’ so she nodded and stepped into his office at his bidding.
“You must be the principal, Mr. Weatherbee.” She observed him closely, watching his eyes, but he surprised her and held her gaze, his eyes not dropping to her jacket as she’d expected.
“I am. The administration down at Southside High spoke very highly of you, Ms. Weylyn. It’s my pleasure to welcome you to Riverdale High.” His mouth pursed for a moment, and he finally delivered what she’d been waiting for, his eyes lowering to her jacket. “They did tell me about the… unsavory influences down at Southside, however. One of which you associate with. They assured me you were nothing but a model student, but I am required to inform you that we will not stand for any sort of gang violence in these halls. As of now, I see no reason not to allow you to continue wearing your jacket, but if I hear of any issues, I will be forced to make you remove it. Understood?”
“Of course, sir. I have no reason to cause problems with the North- I mean, the students here at Riverdale.” He smiled warmly at her for the first time, reaching a hand forward for her to shake. She gripped his hand and shook it, giving him a polite smile back.
“Welcome to Riverdale High, Ms. Weylyn. Congratulations.” He motioned with a hand towards the door and she took her cue, slipping back out into the main office, where Kevin was still waiting.
“So, he’s still letting you wear the intimidating jacket? That’ll definitely keep people off your back.”
“That was the plan when I wore it. And this is actually tamer than the one I wore down at Southside, I figured I should tone it down. Don’t want to give you sensitive Northsiders a heart attack.” Kevin opened the door to the hallway, waving her forward. She followed behind him, moving next to him as soon as she was out the door.
“You could give some of the people here heart attacks just by looking at them. You look like you can murder someone 500 different ways with your bare hands alone, and the jacket just adds to it.” She surprised herself by laughing out loud, quickly closing her mouth so it died in her throat.
“You’re blunt, aren’t you Keller?”
“Call me Kevin. And yes, I’ve been told. I am both the token gay best friend and the token blunt best friend. Double sided coin.” She nodded, laughing quietly to herself again.
“I think I like you, Kevin.”
“My one great goal in life has been achieved, I can die happy now.” His voice rang with sarcasm, but he smiled, looking pleased. He took her around the school, showing her everything that Riverdale High had that Southside lacked. Working toilets, computer lab, a library (which she was excited about), lockers that actually worked, and walls clean of the spray paint that was all over Southside. Suspicious eyes were drawn to her left and right as they walked through the halls, and at one point, she caught sight of someone backing away from her like she’d threatened them.
“So. Who around here isn’t going to hate me just on principal?”
“Well… Betty for sure, and since her and Jughead Jones are dating, probably him too. Archie Andrews will because he’s a simple soul and if Betty tells him someone is ok, he listens. And that’s about it. Well… Me too.”
“Jones?” She recognized that last name from her work with the Ghoulies. Being as high up as she was, Mal let her in on a lot of the important meetings, and she’d heard the last name of the Serpent King multiple times. Granted, it was a common last name, but it seemed like too big of a coincidence.
“Yeah. He works with Betty on the school newspaper, the Blue and Gold.”
“Is it like a rule around here that school newspapers have to be named after colors?” Kevin laughed and Carrie couldn’t help but smile in response.
“Why, what was Southside’s newspaper called?”
“The Red and Black. And no, before you ask, I didn’t work on the paper. Not my scene.”
“I didn’t peg you as a newspaper type, don’t worry. Oh, crap… Watch out, here comes Cheryl Blossom, she’s bound to try to cause some trouble.” Carrie turned her head in the direction Kevin was looking, and her first reaction was anger clawing its way up her throat as she looked at this girl who was very obviously the definition of a Northsider. Clothes that were very obviously designer label, jewelry that Carrie could have sold and gotten a stupid amount of money for, perfectly styled red hair a few shades lighter than Carrie’s, and the signature sneer she was accustomed to seeing on the faces of Northsiders the few times she’d been unlucky enough to run into some of them. The Blossom girl walked with a gait that spoke of years of privilege and training, and when she stopped in front of Carrie, her smile was sickly sweet, and her voice was the same way, dripping sugar and poison.
“Before you get any ideas about using your status as a Southsider to gain you favor, let me warn you. Only one redhead can rule this school, and that position is filled. Even if it wasn’t, no way in hell it would go to a Southside trash, gang affiliated slut like you, clear?” Carrie almost laughed at the girl’s attempt at bravado, used to dealing with even more from Serpents, especially newer ones fresh through initiation who thought they could start shit with her and walk away unscathed. She didn’t rise to the girl’s bait, simply smiling at her.
“I’ll be sure to keep that in mind, Northsider.” Cheryl’s mouth opened, but she couldn’t seem to come up with a reply, so she turned on a heel and stalked off, her posse following close behind. Carrie smiled in victory and turned to Kevin, who was staring at her with his mouth open in shock. “What?”
“You are the singular person I have ever seen shut down Cheryl Blossom that fast. My respect to you, Carrie Weylyn.”
“Why thank you, Kevin Keller. My one goal in life was to achieve the respect of a Northsider.” She almost worried for a moment that she’d offended him with her sardonic humor, but he laughed out loud. “Anyway, is she always like that?”
“Sort of, but she’s been a lot worse lately. Her twin brother, Jason Blossom, died a few weeks ago, just before school started. They never found his body.” Guilt instantly shot through Carrie, rapidly followed by the mix of anger and grief that rose up in her throat every time she thought of Kace. Her older brother by three years, he’d been a serious pain in her ass, but they’d taken care of each other. He had gotten into the Ghoulies when he was 14, joining with Malachi, who had been his best friend. A few years later, Carrie had followed suit, joining the gang at the same age as her brother and his best friend. It had been a normal night for them the night he died, wreaking havoc on the streets of the Southside when they’d run into a group of Serpents who had wanted blood. She hadn’t been there, she’d been busy with homework, but she would never forget the moment when Mal had come home, alone and covered in blood, bearing the worst news of her life. Pity flooded through her at the thought of Cheryl going through that, and in a moment of impulse, she turned to Kevin.
“Do you know where she’d be right now?” His expression was pure confusion, but he thought for a moment before walking off, nodding for her to follow him.
“Probably in the lounge with her ‘handmaidens’. This way.” He took her over to a small room off the main hall, filled with couches and vending machines. She shook off the slight jealousy and scanned the room for Cheryl, spotting her alone on one of the couches.
“Thanks, Kevin. I’ll see you later?” He gave her another confused look before nodding and turning to leave, promising to see her at lunch at the latest. Cheryl looked up with an expression of disgust as Carrie walked up to her, eyes assessing every item of clothing Carrie wore.
“What do you want, Southsider?” Carrie tipped her head to the side and observed the other redhead carefully. She could almost feel the pain in her eyes, and she quietly spoke.
“Kevin told me about your brother.”
“What, and you wanted to come to gloat?” The Blossom girl’s voice was as sharp as broken glass, but Carrie saw tears well up in her eyes and sat across from her, leaning forward with her forearms on her thighs.
“No. I wanted to tell you I know what it’s like to lose a brother, to lose the one person that you felt like was your anchor to this shit world. Like you were caught in a current, but your anchor was holding you in place, so you were ok. And then all of a sudden, it’s ripped away from you and there’s water all around you, tearing you in this direction and that direction until you don’t even know what way is up anymore.”
Carrie paused for a moment, clearing her throat and raising her eyes to the ceiling in an attempt to stop the tears from rolling down her cheeks. “And you fight until you can finally see the light, the surface that you know can save you. But when you swim up, fighting to breathe the whole time, your palms hit solid and you realize you’re still trapped under the ice. You can see the sunlight and the sky, but you’re screaming to be let out and no one can hear you. No matter how hard you hit, the ice never breaks. You’re just… trapped there, forever able to see the light, but never able to reach it.”
We’re opposites, that’s extremely obvious. You’re a Northsider who lives in a gorgeous mansion, and you have everything you ever wanted. I’m a Southsider who lives in a trailer with my dead brother’s best friend, and I get in fights with members from a rival gang because it’s really the only thing I can do. But in this? In losing someone close? In this, we’re the same. If you ever need anything, you can ask me and I’ll help you. For Kace and for Jason. OK?” Carrie had to admit, she expected Cheryl to laugh in her face, but she was surprised when the girl nodded, tears falling from her eyes. Cheryl quickly swept them away, careful not to mess up the makeup that had evidently taken a while to apply.
The first warning bell rand sharply, breaking the tension. Carrie stood, looking around for Kevin as Cheryl waved a quick goodbye and walked off, heels clicking against the ground. He waved from the doorway, jerking his chin in the direction of the hallway, “That was the first person I’ve ever seen be able to get through to Cheryl at all, let alone right after they met her.”
“Well, maybe things around here are starting to change,” Carrie’s lips curved into a half smile as she hoped to whatever Gods there were that things would really start to change.

My Fiery Heart reread response (my Indigo Spell one here, my first-time Fiery Heart one here from 7.5 years ago)
before I get into it, I remembered looking up the Iolanthe coven name Sydney used; that wasn’t something I looked up until after reading it the first time though, so I didn’t realize the fairy court connection to Sydney recommending Zoe do her literature assignment on Midsummer Night’s Dream... I’m very certain it was an intentional reference to that opera now (even though the purple flower meaning was enough on its own)... if they get around to adapting this one, I half want to see Amberwood Prep put on a production of MND where Jill is helping with the costumes and Zoe gets to play Titania or something; I never got around to reading Richard III (Zoe’s original pick) but it’s interesting that free will/fatalism is apparently a major theme, and that Richard contrived to have his brother Clarence sent to the Tower of London...
also, I’m not sure if I cared about “White Rabbit” by Jefferson Airplane all those years ago, but I got a thrill seeing it referenced this go around.
we get the first namedrop for Cicero (though we had heard about his propensity for killing birds and some other mention in the earlier BL books ETA, 7/19: “My family had a cat back in Utah that I was pretty sure was more responsible than Angeline” pg 31 TGL
Anyway, gosh Sydney makes bad decisions in this one. And it’s not because she has too much to do- she has no real outside strenuous challenges to protecting Jill or her group this go around. The friend group actually had to decide “yeah let’s go hunt down a Strigoi in LA” for there to be a major action scene. I realize she’s in her late teens and the burdens put on her are unfair, but she’s a great example of someone who thrives under pressure and falls apart when she’s given too much free time.
The switch to dual narrators was unnecessary. It wasn’t bad, but it was clearly only to set up for the big cliffhanger at the end, and so feels a bit pointless in this one. Btw, Rose didn’t lose her spirit link into Lissa’s mind after Lissa went on antidepressants. Now admittedly, the chemicals in Adrian’s mood stabilizers would have probably worked differently, or maybe Richelle was trying to retroactively make things more consistent (since alcohol could affect the bond), or maybe it was “Adrian and Jill’s bond is less established, so Jill can’t break through like Rose could”... but the sudden decision mid book (with no repercussions- Adrian doesn’t even bring it up to Sydney to be like “hey, one of your main concerns about having sex is taken care of”) is so pointless and really goes to the minimal page-time of the larger ensemble. I said it the first time I read the book, the absence of Kristin and Julia, and Micah, and even more important characters like Angeline or Trey is so frustrating. I realize Richelle couldn’t write a book that was 900 pages long, but I would have gladly taken any of those characters instead of the completely unnecessary Terwilliger/Malachi romance. Especially to see Jill’s reaction to getting to be a more typical high school human, since I think she would have gotten even more attached to Amberwood than Sydney did. I also just... really, the Alchemists decided to have Sydney’s bio sister on campus... pretending to be a cousin... while she was playing sister to Jill? I get they kind of backed themselves into a corner, but weird. That being said, I was happy to have Rowena and Cassie around. (give me Adrian and Rowena being wlw besties excellence to make me really happy)
Sydney’s coven initiation taking place in chapter 2, then she meets Inez (who gives her the books on charms)... and we never see a witch other than Jackie again in this book? Honestly, why bother with writing the initiation at that rate? I still like the cloak they made Sydney though. On reread, there’s the randomest bit where Trey’s like “is Neil even really British” and I wonder if that was a dropped storyline where Neil was faking. Olive and Nina are still pleasant characters, and I liked that they had a “unique” background, but knowing how those stories end was kind of a buzzkill on reread. Olive, especially, deserved better.
This is another one where I forgot quite a few events- Adrian getting drunk and the pawnshop (I think I remembered that obliquely, but not so much on it), or the trip to Texas (which actually came before the pawnshop but oh well). I was happy to finally get some actual Christian content again, although I regret we didn’t get more from Sydney & Rose or more Sydney & Lissa. On Adrian’s mental health storyline... I am less impressed by it than I was the first time (though I didn’t remember being super-impressed, but according to my first review?). I do actually like Adrian being insistent, once he’s started taking meds, that he’s going to continue, but the diagnosis of bipolar disorder doesn’t actually feel like it fits? I will say, I find Adrian’s “chicken or egg” pondering over whether spirit causes mental illness or mental illness means a predisposition to specializing in spirit is fascinating (though it’s probably for the best Richelle never actually answered it).
The way Adrian spoke (or thought) about Zoe really pissed me off. Like, one, you’re an adult, stop antagonizing the sister of the girl you like and just be cordial (which is less suspicious than suddenly acting like you and Sydney don’t get along at all), and two... Adrian’s super protective over Sydney after realizing the emotional abuse Jared heaped on, but somehow doesn’t realize that this fifteen year old has been spending time with said father’s attention solely focused on her for ages now, and he has no sympathy for her? Instead of seeing Zoe being like “Sydney shouldn’t have to provide for you all the time” and being like “aww, that’s a nice protective sister instinct even if she needs an attitude adjustment” he taunts a 15 year old about drinking from her the way he did to 20-something actual-predator Keith. He could have engaged yet another Sage sister in talking about his awesome car on the drive over, or at least made other good faith efforts.
The dabbling stuff made me more uncomfortable this time around (I think). Especially Sydney comparing her getting Keith’s eye ripped out to Adrian’s assault of a human girl... that was some real false equivalency on Richelle’s part. But other parts of it, like “oh here comes Adrian to save the day and at least he’s changed from these guys he used to hang out with (oh, look at that convenient statement that even back in the day Adrian wasn’t on the same level of bad as them)”  was really frustrating, or the fact that Adrian was very deliberately withholding information from her in his own chapters and it made me question his trustworthiness in her chapters. Or the “oh, hey, he made the concession of getting treatment for his mental illness, so all is forgiven” handwaving. Like, Richelle brought this in to be an obstacle to their relationship, but it’s addressed so quickly (with maybe a pittance effort of later being like “oh, at least Adrian didn’t take advantage when Sydney accidentally absorbed some Moroi endorphins- he learned his lessons!) that it doesn’t merit the actual consideration of so important a topic Idk. I do feel like I enjoy the Sydrian relationship more in this book than the others, but I also have some huge issues with it.
Adaptation-wise, I think genderbent Adrian would definitely mean a change to the dabbling storyline (yes, women can be sexual predators, but I don’t think this storyline would be maintained with different social expectations). Honestly, give me an Adrian who, instead of having victimized someone, doesn’t immediately fully grasp how upsetting this idea of vampires preying on her species (and risking exposure) is to Sydney... Adrian being like “it isn’t sexual, those guys would never consider sleeping with a human” but the consent even to give blood still being critical to Sydney. And you know what? Let Lissa “compelled a guy to almost hit himself over the head with a baseball bat for molesting a Feeder” Dragomir have a spirit freak out moment of rage and go off on these subjects of hers the way that was deserved (and then once she cools down, maybe she can’t punish them fully, but she uses it to leverage their royal families’ agreement to the Family Rule amendment). And just finish that law by the end of the season, so that when the Alchemists pull out Sydney and Zoe, they’re actually closing down the whole Palm Springs operation in a rage. (if I remember correctly Alicia kidnapped Jill between books 5 and 6, but that was a stupid plotline imo- let Sydney and her coven take care of Alicia in the downtime of this book instead) Let Rose figure out that Sydney and Adrian are in love- she’s smart and she would pick up on that; let her celebrate them and encourage them to be happy together. Also the “Sydney and Adrian get three days at an inn to sex it all up” was stupid... like I’m happy for them but am I really supposed to buy that they could afford all that time away from Palm Springs?
As bad as I feel for Syd, and Adrian, and Eddie, and Jill, and Jackie at the end of TFH, I do remember that I’m going to feel worst for Hopper. I’m sorry that demon dragon Calistana has my heart and I remember one scene from Silver Shadows featuring the little guy prominently...

A Banner Year
For @pillarspromptsweekly #21. I went with the best year of your Watcher’s life prompt, and it turned into Taviloth fluff (surprise, surprise)
“...mostly during my second year at the lore college.  We spent a lot of time in the field searching for artifacts or historic accounts for the higher-ranking scholars to study. The adventures we had! Definitely one of the best years of my life.”
Tavi smiled to herself, watching Kana’s enthusiastic gestures as he shared some of those adventures with Sagani, who nodded and murmured Uh-huh in all the right places to keep him going, attention clearly divided between the rambling aumaua and caring for her bow. Kana just as clearly didn’t take offense, happily chattering away. Tavi returned her own attention to the rough wooden antelope taking shape under her whittling knife, still half-listening to him ramble.
“It’s rude to eavesdrop, you know,” Aloth commented  lightly as he sat next to her, leaving just enough space between them she had elbow room to continue whittling.
Tavi snorted, scowled briefly at the unintentional gouge his near-silent arrival had caused her leave in one of the antlers, and then set about fixing it. “Is it really eavesdropping if he happens to be talkin’ loud enough I can hear him all the way over here?”
Aloth chuckled. “I suppose it depends on who you ask. And what he’s talking about.”
“He an’ Sagani were tradin’ adventure stories. He’s on some of his time at the lore college,” Tavi replied, guiding her knife around a bend in the figurine taking shape. “Some of the adventures his second year there apparently made it one of the best years of his life.”
“It’s good that he has those,” Aloth commented off-handedly, picking up a wood shaving to fiddle with.
“What?” Tavi stared at the antlers for a moment, then sighed and lopped off the damaged one.
“Best years of his life,” Aloth replied. “That can be called that for more reason than not being terrible.”
Her grip slackened on the half-carved figurine as she sent him a side long glance. “City slicker, keep talkin’ like that an’ I’m gonna start worryin’ about you.”
“Start worrying?” he said, bemused.
“Start worryin’ more,” Tavi amended, rolling her eyes.
As if sensing she was about to pry--he was very good at that--Aloth leaned  forward, intently studying the grain of the wood he held as he asked, “So, what would you consider yours?”
“Best year of my life?” Tavi set down the antelope and knife, brushing way wood shavings as she accepted the redirect, at least temporarily. “Hmm... prob’ly when I was... twenty one or twenty two. I was workin’ with the town blacksmith t’ cover for an apprentice who was out with a broken arm. So I was doin’ something I enjoyed--or enjoyed more than workin’ in my father’s store--more physically demanding, less talkin’ to people an’ havin’ to play polite.” She grinned. “No one’s surprised when a blacksmith swears. They’re more surprised if you don’t, to be honest. So I could spout every fuckin’ curse I knew an’ no one batted an eye. My brothers still looked up to me, by some miracle. Casius was actually knee-deep in trainin’ to be a wizard, and he was damn good at it. Malachi was waitin’ for his voice to pick a damn octave so he knew how to class his singin’, but just put up with it crackin’ every so often in the meantime. Also, that’s the year my parents finally gave up on turnin’ me into a proper, soft-spoken young lady-” Aloth smirked at that, and she elbowed him in the ribs. “I’d been runnin’ around with muddy bare feet an’ wearin’ trousers ‘stead of skirts since I was nine fuckin’ years old, so I dunno why it took ‘em so fuckin’ long to give up, but they did. Just let me be myself, long as it didn’t blow back on them badly.” Tavi smiled wistfully, fingers absently tracing the carved antelope’s features. “That year.... that year was pretty fuckin’ great. It’s the most free I felt while my family was still alive.” She winced. “That came out wrong-”
“I knew what you meant,” Aloth cut her off reassuringly. “That’s the year you had it all, so to speak; felt free to be yourself, and still had the people you cared about.”
“Exactly.” Tavi smiled and bumped her shoulder against his. Her smile faded quickly, however, and she stared pensively at the wooden figure in her hands.  “Everything in my life divides over that fuckin’ fire, Aloth. Before and After, and I feel...” she sighed. “I feel like it’s two different people sometimes.”
“It is, in a way,” he said softly, rubbing her arm. “And there’s nothing wrong with that. Your experiences shape who you are, for better or worse.” He smiled.  “Definitely better, in your case.”
“Aw, thanks, city slicker, I’m flattered.” Tavi grinned, shaking off her brief melancholy. She resumed whittling, carefully running her knife around the curve of a hoof. “What about you? What would you consider the best year of your life?”
Aloth was quiet for long enough she almost started to worry she’d offended him, or stirred up unpleasant memories, lower lip caught between his teeth as he thought. “...This one, I suppose,” he finally said, so softly it was practically under his breath.
Tavi shot him a look halfway between skeptical and joking. “’Cause I’m the best thing that’s ever happened to you?”
He smiled at her sarcastic tone, but his own was far more sincere. “One of them, yes.”
She almost dropped her knife. “Seriously?”
A nod, slow and deliberate. “Yes. Tavi, over the course of the past year, I’ve made more friends than I’ve had in the rest of my life combined, learned how to... handle Iselmyr, escaped the Leaden Key’s influence, and gained a measure of confidence that, while perhaps not the equal of yours, is certainly more than I had.”
“A banner year,” Tavi agreed with a playful smirk.
“And I don’t know if I would have accomplished all of it--certainly not most of it--without your help,” he finished. “So... thank you.”
“You can thank me later,” she said with a wink, and Aloth went red to the tips of his ears. “I’m just kiddin’, but Hylea’s tits, you shoulda seen your face.”
Herolled his eyes. “Very funny.”
Tavi grinned. “Sorry. I’m glad I was able to help you, Aloth, but it’s hardly as if things were one-sided. You helped me a lot, too; with all the Watcher bullshit an’ everything. So I think in that respect we’re pretty much even.”
Aloth raised an eyebrow. “Is there one where we aren’t?”
She chuckled and packed away the antelope to finish later. “At last count, I’ve kissed you more times’n you’ve kissed me.”
He shot her one of those Really? looks he was so good at--he’d gotten a lot of practice with her--and she could almost see him consciously bypass pointing out it didn’t really matter who kissed who in the long run. Instead, he commented dryly, “If you’ll recall, you did have a head start.”
Tavi grinned at the memory and cracked her knuckles. “I do have to concede that point. You’re still behind, Corfiser.”
Aloth shrugged, but there was a glint in his eyes that made her doubt the apparent nonchalance. “I’ll have to do something about that, won’t I?”
“I wouldn’t be upset if you did,” she said with her own shrug of feigned nonchalance.
“Well, in that case...” His hand slid from her arm up to curve along her jaw and he pulled her into a gentle kiss.
Tavi smiled to herself as her hand rose to dig into his hair. This year’s shapin’ up pretty fuckin’ good for me, too...
-------------
I went and counted canon kisses that have happened by this point, and, well. Tavi’s initiated 14 out of 19 prior to this fic. Not counting forehead/nose/cheek kisses. I don’t think that can be completely attributed to her head start. That’s only responsible for, like, two. Get cracking, Aloth. You have a lot of catching up to do. :3

we have to be careful
to live and walk in Love and not in deceit.
A point made clear by the paired chapters of the Testaments with the ancient book of John and Job, coinciding with chapter 15 from each.
to find the place of “Home” in the heart by welcoming the entrance of the Spirit of truth:
[The Vine and the Branches]
“I am the Real Vine and my Father is the Farmer. He cuts off every branch of me that doesn’t bear grapes. And every branch that is grape-bearing he prunes back so it will bear even more. You are already pruned back by the message I have spoken.
“Live in me. Make your home in me just as I do in you. In the same way that a branch can’t bear grapes by itself but only by being joined to the vine, you can’t bear fruit unless you are joined with me.
“I am the Vine, you are the branches. When you’re joined with me and I with you, the relation intimate and organic, the harvest is sure to be abundant. Separated, you can’t produce a thing. Anyone who separates from me is deadwood, gathered up and thrown on the bonfire. But if you make yourselves at home with me and my words are at home in you, you can be sure that whatever you ask will be listened to and acted upon. This is how my Father shows who he is—when you produce grapes, when you mature as my disciples.
“I’ve loved you the way my Father has loved me. Make yourselves at home in my love. If you keep my commands, you’ll remain intimately at home in my love. That’s what I’ve done—kept my Father’s commands and made myself at home in his love.
“I’ve told you these things for a purpose: that my joy might be your joy, and your joy wholly mature. This is my command: Love one another the way I loved you. This is the very best way to love. Put your life on the line for your friends. You are my friends when you do the things I command you. I’m no longer calling you servants because servants don’t understand what their master is thinking and planning. No, I’ve named you friends because I’ve let you in on everything I’ve heard from the Father.
“You didn’t choose me, remember; I chose you, and put you in the world to bear fruit, fruit that won’t spoil. As fruit bearers, whatever you ask the Father in relation to me, he gives you.
“But remember the root command: Love one another.
[Hated by the World]
“If you find the godless world is hating you, remember it got its start hating me. If you lived on the world’s terms, the world would love you as one of its own. But since I picked you to live on God’s terms and no longer on the world’s terms, the world is going to hate you.
“When that happens, remember this: Servants don’t get better treatment than their masters. If they beat on me, they will certainly beat on you. If they did what I told them, they will do what you tell them.
“They are going to do all these things to you because of the way they treated me, because they don’t know the One who sent me. If I hadn’t come and told them all this in plain language, it wouldn’t be so bad. As it is, they have no excuse. Hate me, hate my Father—it’s all the same. If I hadn’t done what I have done among them, works no one has ever done, they wouldn’t be to blame. But they saw the God-signs and hated anyway, both me and my Father. Interesting—they have verified the truth of their own Scriptures where it is written, ‘They hated me for no good reason.’
“When the Friend I plan to send you from the Father comes—the Spirit of Truth issuing from the Father—he will confirm everything about me. You, too, from your side must give your confirming evidence, since you are in this with me from the start.”
The Book of John, Chapter 15 (The Message)
[Eliphaz Attacks Again: You Trivialize Religion]
Eliphaz of Teman spoke a second time:
“If you were truly wise, would you sound so much like a
windbag, belching hot air?
Would you talk nonsense in the middle of a serious argument,
babbling baloney?
Look at you! You trivialize religion,
turn spiritual conversation into empty gossip.
It’s your sin that taught you to talk this way.
You chose an education in fraud.
Your own words have exposed your guilt.
It’s nothing I’ve said—you’ve incriminated yourself!
Do you think you’re the first person to have to deal with
these things?
Have you been around as long as the hills?
Were you listening in when God planned all this?
Do you think you’re the only one who knows anything?
What do you know that we don’t know?
What insights do you have that we’ve missed?
Gray beards and white hair back us up—
old folks who’ve been around a lot longer than you.
Are God’s promises not enough for you,
spoken so gently and tenderly?
Why do you let your emotions take over,
lashing out and spitting fire,
Pitting your whole being against God
by letting words like this come out of your mouth?
Do you think it’s possible for any mere mortal to be sinless
in God’s sight,
for anyone born of a human mother to get it all together?
Why, God can’t even trust his holy angels.
He sees the flaws in the very heavens themselves,
So how much less we humans, smelly and foul,
who lap up evil like water?
[Always at Odds with God]
“I’ve a thing or two to tell you, so listen up!
I’m letting you in on my views;
It’s what wise men and women have always taught,
holding nothing back from what they were taught
By their parents, back in the days
when they had this land all to themselves:
Those who live by their own rules, not God’s, can expect
nothing but trouble,
and the longer they live, the worse it gets.
Every little sound terrifies them.
Just when they think they have it made, disaster strikes.
They despair of things ever getting better—
they’re on the list of people for whom things always turn out
for the worst.
They wander here and there,
never knowing where the next meal is coming from—
every day is doomsday!
They live in constant terror,
always with their backs up against the wall
Because they insist on shaking their fists at God,
defying God Almighty to his face,
Always and ever at odds with God,
always on the defensive.
“Even if they’re the picture of health,
trim and fit and youthful,
They’ll end up living in a ghost town
sleeping in a hovel not fit for a dog,
a ramshackle shack.
They’ll never get ahead,
never amount to a hill of beans.
And then death—don’t think they’ll escape that!
They’ll end up shriveled weeds,
brought down by a puff of God’s breath.
There’s a lesson here: Whoever invests in lies,
gets lies for interest,
Paid in full before the due date.
Some investment!
They’ll be like fruit frost-killed before it ripens,
like buds sheared off before they bloom.
The godless are fruitless—a barren crew;
a life built on bribes goes up in smoke.
They have sex with sin and give birth to evil.
Their lives are wombs for breeding deceit.”
The Book of Job, Chapter 15 (The Message)
and a mirroring of the same from Psalm 5 along with a reflection upon the innocence that only grace provides from the hands of our beautiful Creator as read in Psalm 17 and 95, to be concluded by an instruction in wisdom from Proverbs 5:
You don’t socialize with Wicked,
or invite Evil over as your houseguest.
Hot-Air-Boaster collapses in front of you;
you shake your head over Mischief-Maker.
God destroys Lie-Speaker;
Blood-Thirsty and Truth-Bender disgust you.
And here I am, your invited guest—
it’s incredible!
I enter your house; here I am,
prostrate in your inner sanctum,
Waiting for directions
to get me safely through enemy lines.
The Book of Psalms, Song 5:4-8 (The Message)
[A David Prayer]
Listen while I build my case, God,
the most honest prayer you’ll ever hear.
Show the world I’m innocent—
in your heart you know I am.
Go ahead, examine me from inside out,
surprise me in the middle of the night—
You’ll find I’m just what I say I am.
My words don’t run loose.
I’m not trying to get my way
in the world’s way.
I’m trying to get your way,
your Word’s way.
I’m staying on your trail;
I’m putting one foot
In front of the other.
I’m not giving up.
The Book of Psalms, Song 17:1-5 (The Message)
[Psalm 95]
Come, let’s shout praises to God,
raise the roof for the Rock who saved us!
Let’s march into his presence singing praises,
lifting the rafters with our hymns!
And why? Because God is the best,
High King over all the gods.
In one hand he holds deep caves and caverns,
in the other hand grasps the high mountains.
He made Ocean—he owns it!
His hands sculpted Earth!
So come, let us worship: bow before him,
on your knees before God, who made us!
Oh yes, he’s our God,
and we’re the people he pastures, the flock he feeds.
Drop everything and listen, listen as he speaks:
“Don’t turn a deaf ear as in the Bitter Uprising,
As on the day of the Wilderness Test,
when your ancestors turned and put me to the test.
For forty years they watched me at work among them,
as over and over they tried my patience.
And I was provoked—oh, was I provoked!
‘Can’t they keep their minds on God for five minutes?
Do they simply refuse to walk down my road?’
Exasperated, I exploded,
‘They’ll never get where they’re headed,
never be able to sit down and rest.’”
The Book of Psalms, Song 95 (The Message)
Dear friend, pay close attention to this, my wisdom;
listen very closely to the way I see it.
Then you’ll acquire a taste for good sense;
what I tell you will keep you out of trouble.
The Book of Proverbs, Chapter 5:1-2 (The Message)
i read a chapter from the Old and New Testament of the Bible each day moving sequentially through the books to start over again at the end when reaching the conclusion of Malachi and Revelation, with the exception of Psalms and Proverbs from which i read daily as well with the numbers coinciding with the day of the month, season, and year. for Today, April 5 being Proverbs 5 and Psalm 5, as well as Psalm 17 for day 17 of Spring and Psalm 95 for day 95 of the year. i began pairing a chapter from the Testaments now years ago and they have lined up significantly since then, and so i kept at it, reading through the whole Bible multiple times and sharing my heart along the way in its own personal [blueprint] design of writing.

“A Duck’s fan,” I tell him, “but I’m sure he deserved it.” Even as the words leave my mouth, I’m not so sure of the truth behind him. Covering the new bruises with my hands I hold on tight and look over at Abram, “You were drunk, it’s fine.”
Retracting his hand, he pulls it against his chest, “It’s never fine to just
hit
someone, Elise,” Abram says hypnotized by his wounds, “God—I—I don’t even remember it.” Pressing the palms of his hands into his eyes, I could swear I heard him suppress sob. “Every day I’m turning into him. Little by little—I can’t help it, it’s like a curse. I don’t know what I’m going to do—I can’t—,”
Legs stretch out over his waist and I wrap my fingers around his wrists, pulling them away from his eyes and making him look at him, “Shut up.” I say, “Shut up. You are not Malachi,” Abram flinches at the name, “You won’t ever be him, do you hear me? Even if you tried, you couldn’t.” He opens his mouth to speak, argue like I knew he would—he wants to tell me that the weight on his chest is something less like an anvil and more like bomb, each second that passes is another number ticking down. He wants to tell me that he’s afraid he won’t be able to save me—or himself when it finally explodes, but I don’t let him. I silence him with a kiss, wrists still firm between my fingers.
I don’t stop kissing him until he breaks himself free of my grasp and rests his hands on my hips, fingertips digging in and pulling me closer.
The panic settles—rapid breathing slows and when I pull away the fear in his eyes have disappeared.
“Are you going to start listening to me?” I ask.
Abram grins, “Probably not.”
Leaning forward, I kiss his forehead just as the front door opens Ellie and Brody’s voices fill the empty kitchen, arguing about her driving and I slowly get off of Abram.
“Baby, listen, I hate to leave you right but I have to go. I love you and I’ll be back.” I walk across his room, slipping into a pair of my shoes.
“I knew it. I knew you—,”
“Please, don’t be mad at me,” I frown, hearing the sigh in his voice before he even spoke. “Don’t be mad at me for leaving, I told you I’ll be back it’s just I have to—,”
Cutting me off, Abram stands, “I knew you loved me.”
My eyes are caught by his, “No—I just,”
He closes the distance between his, kisses me and pushes me toward the door, “I’ll probably be asleep by the time you get back.”
♡ ♡ ♡
There’s an unsettling chill that traps me at my front door, a creeping uneasiness that tickles my spine and I stand—for a good minute with my keys in my hand, poised at the door. Even as I inset the key and find no give from the lock, I step in, despite every nerve in my body begging me not to. The light in my living room is on and indistinct chattering fills the mostly dark apartment. I reach for the bat by the door, fingers winding around the wood, holding so tight my knuckles ache.
As I raise the bat overhead, stepping softly into the other room, that’s when I hear her voice.
“Elise, ce n'est pas une façon d'accueillir les invités.”
“Mama!” I shout, dropping the bat, “Que fais-tu ici?” It’s only then that I take in the rest of the room’s occupants. Cerise sits, perfect posture, in an oversized grey chair, clutching a glass of red at the stem. Justin is across from her on the couch looking a little worse for the wear with a bloodied lip three times it’s normal size and beside him were Jolie and Knox nearly in each other’s laps.
Cerise leans forward, leather pants making no sound as she shifts—because even they know the consequence, “Your friends were just telling me about your eventful first weeks at school,” she brings the glass to her lips, takes a sip and narrows her eyes on me, “I absolutely adore all the little anecdotes they’re spilling, Elise. Won’t you join us?”
I drop my back onto my counter and pour a glass of wine—because dealing with my mother was always best done inebriated. I drink the overfull glass and pour another before sitting down in a matching chair. “And what stories was Justin telling you?” I ask, breaking my untrusting attention on my mother and looking over at him.
“À propos de nos cours, professeurs, votre petit ami.” He says, leaning his head to the side. Justin lifts his hand, sliding his thumb gingerly over his lip, “He’s got quite a fist that boy.”
Cerise clicks her tongue and suddenly I feel like a child, too small and insignificant to fill my own body.
“I don’t believe that was your information to tell.” I snap.
“I disagree,” Cerise says, drinking some more. She looks over at me, “I’m rather fond of honesty, Elise. Not that you would know—ever since that boy has polluted your life you only know lying like breathing.”
I laugh—otherwise I’ll drag each of them out of my house by their hair if I don’t.
“I appreciate Justin so much more after what he’s told me. Don’t you remember our deal, mon cher?” She asks, “I only allowed you to attend this dreadful, mundane school on the agreement that you were to have nothing to do with him?” She asks, “I should’ve included Simon, but I knew you’d defy me on that regardless.” She leans further forward and sets the glass on the table, “Still, we had an deal. We came to the understanding that you would no longer allow him to infect your life and in turn, I would continue supporting you.”
“You came to that agreement,” I argue, “I never signed anything.”
“Oh, darling girl,” Cerise stands, grabbing her bag beside the chair. Immediately I stand and I wish I hadn’t. Cerise closes the distance between us, caresses my cheek with her cold hand and then pulls away, “Words are far more binding than any signature. You do know what this means, don’t you?” She looks over at Justin, “Won’t you be a gentleman and walk me to my car?”
He stands, mechanically and like robots the girls follow him. Cerise leaves first and Justin hesitates by the door, “Je suis désolé, Elise. Elle devait savoir. Je ne voulais pas que tu commettes une erreur que tu ne pouvais pas reprendre.”
“Leave.”
♡ ♡ ♡
“I don’t know,” Anais says, stretching out over the counter to steal a vegetable as Simon sautées it. “Maybe she has a point.” She bites down on the carrot, blowing the heat out of her mouth.
My neck nearly snaps with how quick I look over at her, dropping the packing tape in my hand on top of the box I’m working on, “You think I should stop seeing Abram too?”
“God. No.” Anais crinkles her nose, spinning in the bar stool to look at me, “I just think maybe… She spoiled you too much growing up and maybe this will be a good thing for you, her cutting you off. It will give you a chance to see how real people live.”
Hands fall to my hips and it takes everything in me not to stomp away, throw myself on my bed and beg for it to swallow me whole. Instead, I crane my neck and look at Simon who has stayed disturbingly quiet the entire conversation, “What do you think?”
“I—well—I just think that maybe—,” he clenches his jaw and finally looks up at me, “I think it’s a good thing too.”
My body falls into a chair and I sink, as if my bones have disappeared, into it, “So you’re going to cut me off? You’re all going to abandon me?”
Anais laughs, “In so many ways you’re the opposite of your mother—but you have her knack for dramatics, Elise. And no we’re not abandoning you. You’ll just get an allowance. I don’t know why you’re even packing up—with what Simon is going to give you, you’ll be able to afford this apartment. With a roommate.”
Nausea bites at my throat, “And what about eating, Anais? Clothes? Shoes?”
“You’ll have to manage your money—and that may mean cooking your own food, not buying every Celine bag that hits the market and perhaps selling some of your clothes.”
“Anais!”
“Elise you’re acting like this is the end of the world. There are plenty of people who don’t even make what we’re giving you in a month.”
She tries to hide her amusement with her hand, walks over and crouches in front of me. “Cerise taught you that everything and everyone is expendable—people, things, money and it’s going to take a little getting used to, but I promise, it’s not the worst thing in the world.”
“I’m poor.”
“Oh, Bug, you are not. Now quit it with the privileged white girl meltdown and let’s get these boxes over to goodwill.”
My jaw unhinges, “You said I could sell them!”
“Oops. I must have forgot.”
“It was just a few minutes ago!”
Anais grins at me, “Think of it like a purge,” she says, “Like you’re going to be living a minimalist lifestyle from now on.”
“I’m not getting a roommate.”
Simon laughs as he turns off the burner, “Then I guess you’re moving in with us.”

Pride is a hand sliding up my belly and around my throat. It is a knife I try to swallow but instead the coppery taste of blood fills my mouth. It is standing outside his apartment door with an armful of belongings and still being unable to find the nerve to knock.
My phone buzzes incessantly in my back pocket, I imagine our picture coming up on the screen because besides Ellie, Abram is the only one that calls anymore. I’ve blocked Cerise’s number and despite the clenching need to unblock it and fight with her I don’t.
Finally I raise my hand, balancing what was cradled in my arms as I knock on the door. For a moment, my pride fills like a balloon with disappointment and bursts when no one answers. I don’t try again, even start to turn away but then the door opens.
“Holy shit. You’re alive. Abram, Elise is alive—you owe me five bucks.”
“Ah fuck.” Comes a second voice, “You didn’t pause the game, so I’m just going to kill you. Oh—look I won.”
“What are you doing here?”
Tears well in my eyes even as I try to push the unfamiliar uncertainty down, Ellie’s annoyance fades and she pulls me into a hug, “What happened?” Finally taking in all my things, she nods reaching down without having to be asked and grabbing the roll on suitcase by my feet.
As I’m shutting the door behind me, Abram walks from the living room to the kitchen, dressed only in a pair of basketball shorts, “We thought you might have ran away.”
“Tried. No such luck.” I say, voice hoarse from the hours spent crying. “Is it okay if I stay here a while?”
“What happened with your—,”
“Abram.” Ellie snaps. “Of course it’s okay. Do you need to take a shower?”
I nod.
“Abram don’t be a dick. Grab her things and bring them into your room.”
He glares at all, but still does what he’s told.
♡ ♡ ♡
I’ve taken showers in their apartment dozens of times—there were days I spent more time here than in my own apartment, but still, with it being my only other option ( ignoring the alternates ) I felt trapped. The walls felt too thin and too close together to offer any sort of comfort.
When I’m done with the shower, Abram’s sitting up in bed, staring at the bathroom door.
“I don’t want to talk about it.” I lie. He simply nods, pulling back the cover and I slide in. “I don’t.” He nods again and pulls me against him, mouth pressing against the back of my neck. We don’t move for a long time—I nearly think he’s asleep with how steady his breath was on my neck. But finally courage grows like a weed in my belly and my jaw unhinges—I tell him everything, about the deal Cerise made me agree to if I wanted to choose here over London, her cutting me off and Simon’s allowance.
“I sound like a brat, don’t I?” I breathe out, “I know I do—and I’m not upset with the amount of money, I’m upset with Cerise and how she expected me to lock you out of my heart as if that’s such an easy thing to do. Merde. I can’t, Abram.” I admit, “I’ve tried. I’ve tried to ignore how I feel about you—I even believed it for a long time. I said I was over you and I thought, maybe if I said it enough it would be true. I told myself we were just sex—that it’s all I wanted, that it was all you wanted, but that’s not true. We’re not that simple, are we?” I ask, “I couldn’t lose you, even though I knew what would happen. I’d choose you. I would rather lose her and the money than ever have to survive without you again.”

Today is a replay. Given all the shaking and winds and waves not only in the physical world, but in governments and the political sphere, I  think I need to reiterate this thought. Thank you, Francis Chan,  for nudging me to agree with your message today! First, Francis:
I strongly suspect we take God’s mercy lightly. Evidently we think God sent Jesus because we deserved it. Nothing could be further from the truth. We deserved God’s wrath. He sent Jesus because HE is worth/deserved it: God deserves a people who walk in holiness and purity, fully aware of his glory, majesty, holiness, purity, splendor, reality, presence, being, and fully aware of what GRACE means, the price paid for us to come into relationship with him, with his love, BUT aligned with his righteousness. The Blood that HE shed for us is the costliest fluid in the universe, and I need, speaking for myself, to be aware of the value of that Blood.
I picked myself up off the floor this morning long enough to share this with you. I pray God’s manifest presence enters and covers your life, your day, our nation, and the world today, and yes, I have a tiny idea of what that really means and the consequences of what I’m asking: reverential fear, awe and awareness of and reverence for WHO we’ve been “messing and trifling with” to flood our lives, and our personal and corporate realignment and recalibration with HIS Word, HIS will, HIS worship.
Back to the floor ……
The check box “OTHER” has often been my answer of choice on surveys and sometimes on standardized tests when none of the choices or answers seems to fit quite rightly. When I did analogies on IQ tests in school, I could often see relationships between more than one of the answers, and I always wished those tests had a “free response” section so I could elaborate on connections I saw in multiple choices.
“For He is like ….” In writing about the passage in Malachi 2: 17-3:6, John Piper writes:
“He is a refiner’s fire, and that makes all the difference. A refiner’s fire does not destroy indiscriminately like a forest fire. A refiner’s fire does not consume completely like the fire of an incinerator. A refiner’s fire refines. It purifies. It melts down the bar of silver or gold, separates out the impurities that ruin its value, burns them up, and leaves the silver and gold intact. He is like a refiner’s fire.”
“God is like …” – I read analogies about God all through the Bible, yet still I sense the need for a check box of “OTHER” when I try to grasp all of the Being of God. Sometimes in frustration I’ve wished I could step out of the skin of my humanity with all the physical limitations of my cells, amino acids and proteins, to truly behold God in all of His Glory and Presence. So far, all I’ve experienced are flashes of God’s Presence that literally made my heart skip beats, shut my mouth to any possible conversation or exclamation, and sometimes dropped me to my face on the floor.
And all those experiences did was make me hunger and long for more of them.
Somehow I sense that I the modern-day American evangelical church we have focused so single-mindedly on God’s grace, mercy and love that we have completely overlooked His Holiness, His “OTHER”-ness.
Deity is not an easy concept to grasp. We know nothing of it in our everyday lives, in the realm of the natural, and until and unless we come into a true relationship with God through receiving his Son Jesus as Savior, the only receptors/detectors we’re equipped with are our five senses, totally inadequate for grasping the HOLY.
Some religions reduce God’s Deity to human terms by claiming God “came down” physically and was sexually intimate with Mary to conceive Jesus. How we try, in our finite understanding, to bring God down to human terms we can grapple with or, worse, elevate our status to godhood! God alone is Deity, God alone is Holy, and it is nothing less than truly supernaturally miraculous that through Jesus’ death on the cross and his resurrection, God sanctifies our humanity. He does not make us smaller versions of Himself. God’s Holy Spirit comes into us to make us figuratively sanctified, cleansed and honored just as the cups and utensils in the Tempe were. In effect, God’s Spirit connected with our spirit by a means undetectable to our five senses, but very much felt within us, means God chooses to reside within our hearts and spirits as He did in the Holy of Holies in the Tempe in Jerusalem.
Do I “get it”? No. Do I believe it? Yes. Not me, not by my effort or merit. “OTHER.”
God is not in every tree, but every tree is OF God’s creative power. God is not contained (limited) in me. I am an image-bearer, but the image I carry within me because of my relationship with Jesus is a partial reflection of the character and nature of God, a reflection only of someone outside of myself.
One day, quite innocently and unaware of what an answer would do within me, I asked God to give me his heart for a person I was having trouble “loving.” I cannot humanly explain what happened, but I came into contact somehow with a love deeper, more passionate, more understanding and enduring than I had ever before experienced for another human being. “OTHER” is the only way I can describe the encounter.
Since that day I often see a beauty within people that I know I missed before. This ability did not come from me, generate from some goodness within me. I can only describe it as Holy.
I long to give this experience to others, but I can’t. Only God himself can transform so profoundly. I long for others, for you, to know God’s Presence, his Holiness. Periodically I have to take myself out of the “God is my friend” mentality that is true, but isn’t wide or deep enough to accommodate Deity in my perception., and restore God in my thinking to his Holy, Divine, Majestic place as Deity and the sole right focus of my worship and obedient surrender. I am compelled to not give in to those people who demand or expect me worship them. I can love them, but I can’t worship anyone but God Almighty.
Worship is defined as reverent honor and homage paid to God or a sacred personage, or to any object regarded as sacred; adoring reverence or regard. It is both an act and, more importantly, an attitude toward.
Perhaps today it’s time in your life to try to take in, apprehend, or at least acknowledge God’s Holiness, Majesty, Splendor, worth, Divinity, OTHER-ness.
I am the LORD your God. You shall have no other gods before me. Exodus 20: 3
Which of these titles belongs to you, my fellow human being all too often ensnared by narcissistic, selfish tendencies, desires, and expectations of others?
God is an all-consuming fire, A Refiner’s Fire. A crown of beauty. A Great High Priest. A Jealous God. A Hiding Place.. A Scepter. A Strong Tower. Alpha and Omega. Creator. King of kings. Lord of lords.

Jehovah-Rohi — The Lord our Shepherd

In my emphasis on God’s love and mercy, do I forget God’s Holiness?
And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God ask of you but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to him, to love him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to observe the Lord’s commands and decrees that I am giving you today for your own good?
To the Lord your God belong the heavens, even the highest heavens, the earth and everything in it. Yet the Lord set his affection on your ancestors and loved them, and he chose you, their descendants, above all the nations—as it is today. Circumcise your hearts, therefore, and do not be stiff-necked any longer. For the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who shows no partiality and accepts no bribes…. Fear the Lord your God and serve him. Deuteronomy 10: 12-20 NIV
O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens. Psalms 8:1
Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name; worship the LORD in the splendor of holiness. Psalms 29:2
Psalm 93:1 The LORD reigns, he is robed in majesty; the LORD is robed in majesty and armed with strength; indeed, the world is established, firm and secure.
Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the LORD, our Maker! Psalms 95:6
Exalt the LORD our God; worship at his footstool! Holy is he! Psalms 99:5
Jesus said to her, “Woman, believe me, the hour is coming when neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem will you worship the Father. You worship what you do not know; we worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews. But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him. God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” John 4: 21-24 NIV
In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above him were seraphim, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. And they were calling to one another: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.” At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke. Isaiah 6: 1-4 NIV
Then I heard what sounded like a great multitude, like the roar of rushing waters and like loud peals of thunder, shouting: “Hallelujah! For our Lord God Almighty reigns. Let us rejoice and be glad and give him glory! For the wedding of the Lamb has come, and his bride has made herself ready.
the twenty-four elders fall down before him who sits on the throne and worship him who lives for ever and ever. They lay their crowns before the throne and say: “You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being. Revelation 4:10-11
But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.” 1 Peter 1: 15-16
So then, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure. Philippians 2:12-13
Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might. Heaven and Earth are filled with Your Glory. Hosanna, hosanna in the highest!
