I'm sorry, I saw my favorite fishmen and all my brain went out the window. Why is baby Jinbe so cute???
Chapter 1064: Take to the Seas
RED ALERT! The Law vs. Blackbeard fight isn’t being off-screened! RED ALERT!
The cover story confirmed what just about everyone theorized last chapter: Kuzan was one of the intruders at Chocolat Town and kidnapped Pudding.
Tumblr media
Of course, Van Augur’s presence here indicates this happened during Wano since he’s at the fight with Law – and Pudding is being held captive on the ship. So, where’s Kuzan now? The Hearts have their hands full with the group of Blackbeard Pirates who’ve already shown themselves; the last thing they need is a former admiral to show up. (Not to mention the other missing BB Pirates like Shiryu and Lafitte.)
Of course, Kuzan is also likely undercover (perhaps for SWORD? Considering Drake is also apparently MIA, I wonder if we’ll get some payoff there, especially with Drake being the one to set Law free in Wano.)
It’s definitely surprising to see a cover story so directly tie into present events, my goodness.
Anyway, speaking of Law and the Hearts…
Tumblr media
So much going on here! The Heart Pirate with the mask gets a name (Hakugan, or snow goose), Shachi and Penguin head for the water, and Law immediately jumps in with awakened attacks when they were his last resort against Big Mom. My boy is getting more and more powerful.
And the Hearts get to show out, too! Suck it, haters.
Tumblr media
I love the idea that the Hearts are most dangerous in the water; it fits so well with using a submarine and their sea animal names. (Plus, Law has that mysterious “Water” part of his name. We ever going to learn about why that was taboo? It would be interesting if it had to do with some kind of affinity for the sea.) They’ve also got excellent teamwork, as we see Bepo directing Jean Bart to protect Law from Augur.
Tumblr media
Shock Wille brought Big Mom to her knees, and the pain Blackbeard feels is amplified because of his fruit, so this must’ve been excruciating. (Blackbeard might be smart but he’s also overconfident; it seems he realized his mistake in not being aware Law had awakened his fruit, though). However, he also has insane stamina and durability, so he keeps fighting on.
Tumblr media
The bottom panel is great. I love the side angle of Law to show both Kikoku and his fruit as well as his waving cloak while Blackbeard looms in the background.
And I love seeing Law’s brain working.
Tumblr media
He’s got a crew that excels in the water, and Blackbeard’s got a crew full of anchors. His crew knows exactly what to do because they’re clearly a well-oiled machine.
And that smirk *swoon*
Tumblr media
So, Pudding’s on Blackbeard’s ship, but where’s Coby?
Speaking of Pudding, she’s looking confident for being a prisoner of another Emperor.
Tumblr media
Big Mom’s (and, by extension, Kaido’s) fate remains ambiguous here. Honestly, I’d prefer it if both she and Kaido had perished (we saw them in a volcano that then erupted, for goodness’ sake) but this is One Piece.
The final panel of the Blackbeard vs. Law fight has me nervous.
Tumblr media
Black Vortex draws everything into itself, which allows Blackbeard to use his DF nullifying powers. I find it hard to believe that Law wouldn’t have studied up on Blackbeard and would be unaware of his ability, so I’m hoping he has a means of countering its effects. However, we’ve seen it used to great effect on some powerful people, so…
I still think Blackbeard needs to have some kind of win here, especially after losing out on Hancock’s fruit not long ago. He’ll likely getting Law’s Poneglyphs somehow, but I don’t think Law dies. Maybe he’s captured (Blackbeard, Law, and Coby being in one place would give us the perfect chance to learn about Rocky Port, after all) or maybe there is interference from an outside source, allowing Law to escape.
But it seems like Oda is giving Law and the Hearts a chance to show out before things turn.
Speaking out outside sources…
Tumblr media
How the hell is Akainu hearing about this fight while it’s in progress? Feels like more evidence in favor of Kuzan being undercover.
(Also interesting that this island is called Winner Island. Not sure what to make of that yet.)
As for the other plotline, I don’t have a ton to say. A few high- (and low-) lights:
Tumblr media
Oda continues bringing in SBS material with young Jinbei and old Luffy from a bad future.
We get some background on Kuma from Jinbei, and I had to laugh at Jinbei not sugarcoating anything. (Also, lightsaber!)
Tumblr media
Clearly, there’s more going on with Kuma (who is also apparently part of some special race), Vegapunk, and the Revolutionaries than anyone knows, which is supported by the exchange between Shaka and Dragon at the end of the chapter.
Tumblr media
Also, massive eyeroll at the fanservice in this chapter. We get a shot of Bonney, who is being very serious, with her ass front and center, and then the outfits Nami and Robin are put in…
Tumblr media
Even Franky – FRANKY – is wearing pants. C’mon, Oda. This is honestly just gross.
Meanwhile, Zoro and Brook hang out with the ship because they don’t trust Lilith. Smart. They may end up being the first to interact with CP0 then.
Minus the brutal fanservice, this was a great chapter. I’m going to be on tenterhooks for the next week waiting to see more of the Law and Blackbeard fight.

Question for you, Blackbeard?
What's your plan if you're sailing around on your boat, and it just capsizes? Or if Sabo or someone else just sets fire to your boat?
At least Luffy has enough crewmates that can swim that could save the Devil Fruit users if they get stranded in the open ocean, you don't have shit.
Maybe the benefits are worth the risks, but it would probably be good to have at least a few crewmates for emergencies that you hold off on giving Devil Fruits, just in case.

Mild One Piece manga spoilers maybe?? For recent chapters (like 1064+??).
Can y'all believe the Lore Dump TM in One Piece right now?? Freaking crazy.
I don't even know where to begin processing all this information.
The Ohara bit stood out to me though. Stabbed me right in my poor heart. I'm sp happy for Robin. I love Inherited Will TM right now.

chapter 1081 spoilers—okay, angst is fun and all but...
Shachi literally means orca in Japanese. Ikkaku means narwhal. They can dive deep (Narwhals, deeper than most submarines go, I think) and survive. Penguins are pretty good underwater for a while (though I don't know about depth). The ocean is the home of sea urchins and sea angels (Uni and Clione). And have we forgotten how hardcore Penguin and Shachi went here?:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And do you think that Jean Bart looks a little fishman here? ( A little Namur-like).
Tumblr media
Now, I don't know about snow geese, but we'll give Hakugan some magical properties. So while it is heartbreaking that the Polar Tang
will no longer sail the seas (and, yeah, the boys had had it forever, but this is the sub's own Going Merry moment, perhaps), I think we should believe Bepo here:
Tumblr media
where he urges Law to have faith in the hardiness of his North Blue crew in the depths of the ocean. His concern is more with Law (but we know he'll be okay):
Tumblr media
Bepo urges Law not to die, but the Hearts will continue to overcome. I don't know that they'll be captured either, but they must've almost escaped because Jean Bart was on land, right? In chapter 1064:
Tumblr media
But look at this instruction (also from 1064):
Tumblr media
where Law urges Penguin and Shachi into the water. The Hearts are fine, but I understand the angst (it's glorious, isn't it?!). I think Law's worried, obviously, but I also think he picked his crew and mode of transport for a reason beyond just remaining hidden.
But, the Polar Tang:
Tumblr media
the Victoria Punk
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the Jewelry Margerhita?
Tumblr media
Although, the Wiki says they don't know what happened to it after Bonney was captured by Blackbeard way back when, but in Egghead Jinbei does ask her:
Tumblr media
where her ship and crew is. She states that her ship (which might be the Jewelry Margherita) was eaten by the monsters (controlled by Lilith, right?) outside of Egghead, and that she came alone.
The wiki says: (according to Vivre Card - One Piece Visual Dictionary (Card #0511), Information about Bonney is revealed), that:
Bonney seems to prioritize her own safety over her crew's as she managed to escape Marine detainment but chose not to rescue her subordinates.
That's stark contrast to Law, and we've mostly seen her operate alone, but I'm not gonna believe the Vivre cards just yet.
Also, Kid's obviously alive if Law is and if their losses were similar in wording and visuals. I think Kid's crew have saved him, if not Shanks' crew.
BUT, once Law recovers, he'll not be sequestered in a cell for ten years before he becomes relevant again (poor Kid. Damn!).
As @purplehairedwonder pointed out, the Polar Tang was carrying Law's poneglyph copies, and I bet that the crew is carrying them. Hope so. He'd be wise enough to have them waterproofed. BUT it makes more narrative sense to have them destroyed.
Now, someone was talking about how a Klabautermann is only seen when a ship is doomed (this wikipedia article supports it, but that's as far as my sources go) and therefore they didn't include images/stories/prompts about it for the Polar Tang. I can't remember who it was! Ahh, well it seems that the Klabautermann of various ships have been very busy lately.
Kuzan, too. Kuzan is cool (haha). I'm glad we saw him. And the dialogue with the Blackbeard pirates and Kuzan. OH, I almost forgot, this angst:
Tumblr media
where Blackbeard taunts Law with the fact (yes, fact!) that there are a hundred pirates on Pirate Island still without their hearts, due to Law, and BB would be thrilled to punish Law for the fact, can't help but stir the whump-writer's heart (I'm sorry, Law).
AND, Koby and Law were in cahoots in some way, I'm sure of it (probably be disproven). Something similar to Luffy and Smoker at Alabasta, perhaps? Anyway.
Side note, do you think that Chopper used Caesar Clown's science and ego to help produce the rumble-ball like power-up he gave Bepo? If so, I wonder if this will come to play in the future when Caesar and Judge enter the fray again, if they do.

Before we get into the chapter review, I’d just like to talk a bit about Eustass Kid and Trafalgar Law, their rivalry - and their differing philosophies of combat, and how it’s served them in the New World.
I have to admit, I personally preferred Kid at first. He had a cool design, a bounty higher than Luffy’s, and I really had a preference for magnetic powers. Even his post-time skip design was visually awesome. And he served as a nice foil for Law, who could switch/remove body parts, while Kid could assemble artifical limbs out of scrap.
Kid’s situation has people wondering whether Law took a similar L, and the answer is clearly no. The reason why is because even if Law lost against Blackbeard (and I personally believe that he did), it is not nearly as brutal a curbstomp as Kid received, and chapter 1064 is clear that Law looked like he had a fighting chance. Here’s what I think the issues lie:
Kid got his bounty because of the collateral damage from his fights, not because of any specific assault on the World Government’s influence - which is where he contrasts with Luffy. He openly admits taking out his wrath on civilians as much as other pirates, or even Marines. He even attacks opponents as they flee from him. If Oda still had that old category from the pilot, Kid would probably be classified as a “Morgana” pirate i.e. evil, but even he has a sense of morals, camaraderie, and the pragmatism to ally with the Straw Hats - so it’s perhaps just as well these pirate categories were discarded. Anyway, Kid’s fighting philosophy is to attack head on with overwhelming force until the enemy is crippled, or rendered inoperable. It’s probably how he survived the Grand Line - not giving a shit about overwhelming odds against him, and just launches assaults on whoever happens to get in his way. It’s because of this mindset that he immediately set for the New World, and caught the ire of two Yonko before the story even reintroduces him. He sank three ships controlled by the Big Mom Pirates (though it’s implied that he was pushed back from arriving at Totland), and attacked the Red Hair Pirates - and lost an arm in process (Benn Beckman is implied to be responsible). I think that the only reason he agreed to an alliance with two of the Worst Generation was to get payback on the Red Hairs. He of course, also got fucked up by Kaido. So that’s three Yonko he pissed off. Kid this time didn’t even so much as agree to another alliance - one focused on Kaido and Big Mom, as much as fall into one. He in fact seems annoyed at the very concept of alliances with rivals, more so when one easily broke up in the first sign of trouble, because two of the other captains were either in on the gig, or were too cowardly to test their mettle. At least with Luffy and Law, it was more solid because they treat their word as iron clad and take seriously the trust such an alliance involves.
Law on the other hand, is much more methodical in his approach, and even sets up contingency plans if problems arise. He doesn’t strike until he knows there’s a massive pay off from doing so, and is willing to buy time before going on the offensive. He treats saving Luffy partly as happenstance, and partly as matter of fairness - believing that losing a rival in a battlefield like Marineford would just be anticlimatic. He oversaw Luffy’s recovery in Amazon Lily, and as he left - he declared that he’s going to wait a while before heading to the New World, while the others tear each other apart - declaring in the end, he’ll be the one to take the One Piece and wear the crown. This was a good call, because his Worst Generation rivals had quickly hit an ‘insurmountable wall’, and either got their asses kicked, or decided to wear the colours of a Yonko. Law, meanwhile hedged his bets with the World Government by filling a Shichibukai position - and even that primarily was to complete a long-running scheme of revenge against Doflamingo, by pitting his business partner Kaido against him. In many of Law’s fights, he’s pitted in some disadvantage and is often on the defensive, so he uses the element of surprise to quickly turn the tables. The versatility of his devil fruit power grants Law several opportunities to catch his opponent by surprise and gain the edge, as we saw against Doflamingo (though he was able to quickly recover due to his own shrewdness, and familiarity with Law) as well as Blackbeard. Law at the very least was literally trained to be a pirate by one of the most dangerous and influential prate crews at the time, and used that training to hone one of the most difficult fruit powers to control. If that doesn’t show how methodical Law is, I don’t know what does.
Both Law and Kid took down Big Mom together their approaches complemented each other very well. But since parting ways, they’ve independently being put to the test by the Yonko on their resolve -with only those who’ve taken them seriously resolving to clash against them. Only Luffy has personally defeated one and that’s why he joined their number.
It’s easy to see why Kid lost. Shanks, unlike Big Mom or Kaido - took him very seriously. Kid’s approach to conflict ensured that he’d lose, and quickly at that. Shanks even brought giants to squash the crew - not that he needed them. Law’s fatewill probably be similar or different, but it’s clear that Law has performed better because of his tactical way of fighting. I personally wouldn’t be surprised if Law emerges his fight relatively unscathed.

Hi! I really love your analyses regarding Sanji and Nami and as a newbie fan I enjoy scrolling thru your posts very much!!! I have a question about Pudding. Do you think her recent capture in chapter 1064 has to do anything with her romantic plotline with Sanji in future or is there a chance that whole this kidnapping thing is just a set-up by Oda for Pudding and Sanji's further development in case he saves her from Blackbeards? Thanks in advance, love you!! <33
Hi, Anon! Thanks for your kind words. ^^
Hopefully you're still around, just saw this message at my box, it was from November 2023. So, sorry for the very late reply as I'm not that much active here anymore. I'm on the SanNami discord though.
So, regarding Pudding, recently, on chapter 1121, it was hinted that the three-eyed race is one of the persecuted races by the World Government. I think her kidnapping will be used to explore that part of the One Piece lore, concerning the three-eyed clan and its mysterious powers.
Maybe Oda will stop at that and make her involvement in the future story simply non-romantic and she will be just a victim of the Blackbeard pirates.
But I reckon that there are good chances Sanji might be involved in some sort of rescue and, considering that she was in love with him when she said good-bye, it might lead to some romantic development between them.
Hopefully that could trigger Nami to make a move, if she realizes that she might have feelings for Sanji.

Reading One Piece: Chapters 1063-1064
-”All four of you sure ate your fill!” “No, I always look like this.” Jimbei Experiences Fat Shaming
-”I need to get back to my job: violence!” sdkjfhskjdfhsd
-oh god dammit why is a Kuma here
-”It just popped out when I kicked the machine!” Luffy. Sweetie.
-We were robbed of a Trafalgar Law genderbender arc. Cowards, all of you.
-OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOH SHIT BLACKBEARD VS LAW
-Eesh, one thing I’m still not vibing with is how cramped and confusing the action paneling has become ever since the time skip. This fight should be way more epic than these layouts are allowing it to be.
-”Luffy, Age 70″ oh what fresh hell did we just walk into
-...that is literally just a lightsaber.
-Ooh, sky island ground!
-”So I want you to hear me out... Dragon.” Aaaand things just took a turn for the batshit. What else is new?

Iconing chapter 1064 and Law is so damn calm. Just relaxed while throwing verbal and physical barbs at Blackbeard. The theorised end villain of One Piece just drops in to fight and Law isn’t even phased. Just ... Blackbeard, my dude, you are absolutely fucked. Can’t best this cool cucumber.

Yeah, that's about how I'd think it would go.
I mean, there are 7 Vegapunks, so some of them probably make it out, but I definitely think the main one isn't going to.
I think he's going to give them knowledge that will probably be essential, probably do a lot to help them and shed light on a lot of things, but he's going to die.
Actually, wait a second. Holy shit, he's talking to Dragon?
