Okay so I’m getting invested in Disneys Zombies series again and checked out the re-animated shorts, and I lowkey hope they end up doing a full animated zombies show, mostly because it’d be fun to see the episodes of the different seasons kind of be follow ups to the movies.
There’s this one fanfic called Zombies: the series by callmeLy/ @unusual-ly and I imagine it following a similar structure.
I have some ideas, so comment if you want to hear them or comment your own episode ideas
#one I had was Bucky getting injured during one of their practices and having to sit out for a while and just seeing how mopey he is#also maybe some of the other cheer members trying to take over his position and letting the power get to them#disney zombies

White Winter Wolf
CHAPTER 7
It was during their next mission together, that Bucky had finally snapped. Leading to Irina punching him clean, square in the face and Bucky apologising, promising that he would try better. She had ultimately pulled him from the brink of no return. The mission had gone tits up completely, and through no fault of their own. Irina, much to Bucky's surprise, had managed to get the absolute stuffing knocked out of her, resulting in her being injured and off the mission roster. But as soon as she had been down, Doctor Cho was able to heal her, using whatever tech they used nowadays, and she was up, bouncing about like the little annoying fairy she was.
Which led to Bucky having to give her training. Why? He didn't know. According to Stark, it was because she would be facing people a lot stronger than herself, and those powers she had would not always save her. So, he did. Which resulted in Irina knocking the absolute snot out of Bucky most of the time, because she was sneaky and used that power, much to Bucky's annoyance. So, he told Stark he had done all he could, and both Bucky and Irina were put back on the mission queue.
This time, the young air force soldier Torres was with them. They had managed to capture some crazed scientist that was trying to create a serum that would enhance human DNA, to create a mutant like form. It was on that journey home, that Bucky then realised or over heard, that Torres was dating? Irina. He didn't mean to pry into their conversation, but given he had enhanced hearing, he could hear every word. He could also hear Torress asking Irina why she left his room a few nights ago. He then remembered Irina's drunken confession to Bucky, that she had only slept with one other person. Well, that would be two now, wouldn't it? But it was how she was so...she seemed disturbed by a guy being so, pushy.
So the conversation Torres tried to have with her lead to Irina walking away from him, and sitting next to Bucky. He turned his head to look at her, catching a glimpse of the blue henley she wore. Bucky's henley "You know, your guy might not like you wearing other men's clothes." Bucky said, causing Irina to turn her head to look at him.
"No, Barnes, you don't understand." Irina whispered to him, "He is a nice guy, but...." Before she could continue, there was a crash on top of the quinjet, causing them to look up, as Bucky sat forward, tensing and Irina pulled out her pocket knife "I think we have company."
"I think you are right." Bucky mumbled, standing up "Can we get eyes up there with all this tech we have? To see who-" He heard the faint sound of cutting, and he turned, grabbing the oxygen mask, practically shoving it onto Irina's face, who looked at him, furrowing her brows "Strap yourself in, once they cut that open, the pressure will drop and if you aren't strapped in, you will get sucked out." Bucky explained, he knew this from his days in the army. Irina gave him a nod as Bucky went over to Torres, who was looking at the control panel. "How are we looking?"
"Pressure dropping, we are losing altitude.." Torres called out "They really want their scientist back, huh?" Oh yeah, that guy. Bucky went over to the older guy, strapping him in tight as he put the mask over his face.
"Keep this thing in the air, Torres! Do whatever it takes!" Bucky called back to him, just as then the hole in the roof got bigger, with two unknown men entering, Irina had unbuckled herself, launching herself at one of them as Bucky dealt with the other, knocking the absolute stuffing out of the guy. But with each person he knocked down, more came through. Torres made the plane do a barrel roll, sending them scattering about it.
"Back up is ten minutes out!" Torres called, that wasn't quick enough. Bucky grabbed one of the parachutes, clipping it onto him, because he knew that there was more than likely a chance he was going to need it. Irina got to work, taking out one of the other men, as one came up to Bucky, hitting him square in the face. It had caught him completely off guard, but as soon as he recovered he kicked him in the chest, sending him falling out of the hole he had came through. Wiping the fresh path of blood that came from his nose, he was too lame to react to Irina being hit in the head and knocked unconscious by one of the men. He dived himself at him, beating the shit out of him, when suddenly, Irina was sucked out of that hole, just what he told her would happen if she didn't keep herself seated and belted.
Groaning, he fixed his parachute backpack, before going to the hole and jumping out it. He hated freefalling. But he had to get her, if she hit that ground it would be game over and Stark would kill him. So, he freefalled until he caught her, grabbing onto her. Suddenly her eyes flung open, was she freaking out? Well, if she was, she wasn't showing it, but he could see the panic in her eyes.
"Wrap yourself around me." Bucky said, and she nodded, wrapping her arms around his neck, and her legs around his waist "Sorry about this." Bucky whispered as he put his hands underneath her ass, hoisting her up. As soon as they were at at the right height, he pulled on the string, releasing the chute. He rolled it up, bundling it into the backpack before putting it back on. If the team didn't find them soon, they would most likely need it.
"My head is killing me." Irina admitted, groaning.
Yeah, he understood why "There is backup coming, Torres still has the scientist. Once we hit the ground we can find them from there."
"Hit the grou-" Irina's words were cut off by them doing just as Bucky had said, hitting the ground. When they did he stumbled, falling as Irina's back hit the grassy ground beneath them, with bucky's weight on top of her. He groaned as she heard her wince of pain "Get of me, you're so fucking heavy." He rolled off her, lying beside her as they both stared at the sky that they had just, literally, fell from.
"You alright?" Bucky asked, turning his head to look at her. She turned her head, nodding at him "Come on, we shouldn't wait around." Standing, he removed the backpack, taking Irina's hand to help her up.
"Is your nose broke?" Irina asked, lifted her hand to touch at his nose as he pulled away "Oh my, it is! How hard did that dude hit you."
Groaning as he clenched his jaw, he began walking through the area. It seemed they had landed in some rural area of France, given that when they passed people, that was the language they spoke. They continued walking until they came to a dense, forest area. Turning, he looked at Irina. It was clear that they wouldn't be found, not tonight anyway. Once they were a safe distance into the forest, they settled down, and Bucky actually used the skills he learned back in the army to light a fire - much to Irina's amusement. She didn't know how to light a fire using only the natural elements.
Irina took out the chute from the backpack, laying it on the ground before lying ontop of it and staring at the sky. So, Bucky joined her in it too. What else would he do? They lay there, just both looking as the dark night rolled in, the stars lighting up the skies. As always, it lead to Irina asking him questions. Most of them were centered around his life back during the war. Much of it he wasn't too overly keen to share, only because in speaking off it, it brought a great deal of pain and grief.
"I had a sister." Bucky admitted, running his tongue over his lip. Irina turned her head to look at him, examining his features.
"What was she like?" Irina asked, so Bucky told her. His sister meant the world to him. Their mother had died young, and their father not long after, leaving it to just be them two. He would have given Rebecca the world if he could. It was in his mind why he joined the army, to protect her from the evil that tried to control the world. He grieved for the life he didn't have, he grieved in knowing his sister had to bare the loss of losing him alone.
"You and Torres?" Bucky asked, causing Irina to sigh "What?"
Irina shook his head, looking up at the sky. "I think I have gotten myself into something that I feel absolutely terrible getting myself out of." Irina admitted, turning her head to look at Bucky "I don't feel that connection, each time he tries to kiss me or anything, I can't and I feel horrible for the fact that I am going to hurt him, but..."
"You can't be dishonest with yourself." Bucky said, causing Irina to nod "Let him down gently, hes a good kid."
"I tried." Irina whispered harshly, turning around to lie on her front as she propped herself up on her elbows "Then he does that really sad face, like.... It looks as if I have kicked a puppy." Irina shook her head, sighing.
So here he was, having this talk with her. He knew what she meant, Torres was a good kid, but when he was upset, he had that look...that you instantly felt bad about. So, his advice was, just tell the truth and be done with it. It would be hard to do, especially if Torres did have that sad , puppy-hurt face, but, it would be truth it in the end if it meant she didn't have to pretend.
"What about you, Sargeant Barnes?" Irina asked, causing Bucky to furrow his brows at her. "When was the last time you got laid?"
That question caught him off guard as he widened his eyes. Stuttering, he shook his head, looking away. But she only probed into the question "The 40s?" Bucky admitted, feeling an instant rush of heat in his cheeks. He heard Irina's snort, before she started laughing. When he looked at her, he saw that little light shining in her eyes as she laughed, and he felt the corner of his lip tug as a smile threatened to break his usual, stony expression.
Did she just make him smile? She did "Its not as if I have been exactly free to date, I was kind off tied up." Bucky defended, causing Irina to laugh, nodding
"Which means we have to get you into the world of online dating, Sargeant Barnes." Irina whispered, causing Bucky to shake his head. No. Absolutely no way. The last time he tried that he couldn't decipher that the hell he was doing. People using pictures of cats, just horned out women looking....in their own words, a good time. No. That was not for him, plus, he didn't really have the time for dating, did he? Sam all but bothered him about it constantly, saying that Bucky most likely was shooting dust. Which he wasn't. He had urged, which he fought against. Mostly because he was afraid of hurting whoever he would be with.
By the time that Bucky had moved onto giving Irina tongue twisters, which was amusing given her accent, there was a roll of an engine. They had found them. Well, Sam had seemingly found them. When he flew to them, Sam had made a joke about how they both looked like star-gazing lovers. Which made both Irina and Bucky look at each other with scrunched faces, before shaking their heads. They boarded the quinjet which was parked not too far away, and Bucky immediately told them that Irina had endured a blow to the head, which earned him a rather murderous look from her. He was just looking out for his partner. Natasha was in the pilot seat, and Torres immediately unbuckled himself, making his way over to Irina as he pulled her into a hug. Bucky noticed how her body immediately went tense, heck, was she really that uncomfortable around the guy?
"Alright, both of you sit down, god i thought you were both dead! Here is painkillers." Torres said, taking out a small bottle that had pills in it and handing it to Bucky "Buckle up, are you hungry? Yous must be hungry, I can make you burgers, uh....pizza? Anything?"
Bucky sat down on one of the chairs, and Irina sat beside him, he noticed how she buckled herself in extra tight this time "Double cheeseburger, kid." Bucky said, before clearing his throat "Make it two." He indicated towards Irina, because Bucky had gotten to know that Irina loved cheeseburgers too.
"Torres, make it three!" Natasha called from the cockpit
"Count me in, make it four." Sam said as he walked passed them, winking at Torres as he gave him the order. Torres nodded quickly before turning and making his way down the stairs to the lower half of quinjet. Bucky turned to Irina, and he opened the bottle of pills, taking a few out and reached her hand her them. She shook her head, looking away.
"Just take the damn pills." Bucky hissed, and she shook her head "I will shove them down your throat if I have to, Petrova. You got hit in the head, you are bound to be in pain."
Irina sighed, nodding her head as she took the pills off Bucky, and Bucky in turn took some as well, grabbing two bottles of water that were sitting aside and handing Irina one, who opened it, gulping the pills down and Bucky did so too. Sitting back, they both stared ahead. Well, it was one hell of a mission. He didn't expect them to literally go free falling from a plane, but hey, at least they survived. Soon, Torres came up the stairs, two plates in his hands, as he started passing out the cheeseburgers. So, they sat eating them, silently.
"Irina, when we get back, maybe I can take you out? After you have passed your medical with Doctor Cho, of course." Torres said, causing Irina to almost choke on her burger. Poor girl, she was thinking of ways to tell him she didn't want...well, whatever the hell they had going on.
"I uh...I can't." Irina said, clearing her throat "I uhm..I have too..."
"We have that thing, don't we?" Bucky suddenly said. Why was he doing this? Hell, maybe it was the pills? Irina turned her head, looking at Bucky with wide eyes, nodding her head slowly.
"Yeah, we have that....thing." She said, raising her brow.
"What thing?" Torres asked, looking between the pair.
"Its confidential." Bucky said, turning his head to look at Torres.
"A work thing." Irina interjected, and Bucky nodded as he shifted in his seat.
"Oh..I get it. You're not allowed to disclose that information, okay? Well, I can text you and maybe...we can do something when you are free?" Torres asked.
"Uh, yeah." Irina said. Bucky turned his head to look at her as she tried to look at anything that wasn't Torres. But, Torres got up, smiling at her as he made his way to the cockpit. A few seconds passed before Irina turned her head to look at Bucky. "Thank you." She whispered to him.
"You really need to tell him," Bucky said flatly, causing Irina to wince.
Why did he lie for her? Well, he saw how uncomfortable she was. Heck, she just didn't want to hurt the kids feelings. He understood that. Irina smiled at him, before turning her head, looking straight ahead. Were they friends? He didn't know. But he understood her, and he felt that Irina in a way understood him as well. In a way they were like two sides of the same coin, they were the same in how they felt, but both had different faces - bucky was stone faced, Irina pretended to be happy. Did Torres click onto it? The kid wasn't stupid, but had he looked hard enough to see beneath the surface, to see how wounded Irina was inside? Bucky didn't think so. Bucky only did, because he recognised that look.

Back Pain
Bucky Barnes x Daughter!reader
Word Count: 902
Requested By: @thatsamericasass24
So hi. First off, love your writing, super good. Second off, I saw your requests are open so if you wouldn’t mind can you do like a Bucky Barnes x daughter reader. And, I’ll try not make this specific, I’m having the WORST back pain right now, which I’m usually used to but whatever. Anyway I was just wondering if you could center the fic around that. I’m literally up way to late right now asking this. Bc my back has been keeping me awake till like 4 am. Thank you and no pressure 😘
A/N: Thank you for this request! I hope you enjoy it!
Bucky didn’t realize something was wrong. You liked to spend most of your free time sparring in the gym or at the punching bag. Steve had taught you proper form so you wouldn’t hurt yourself but he also told you not to box 24/7. You listened to him but rather than box, you took to practicing your hand to hand skills or whatever else you felt you needed to during the day. You wanted to be in top shape for whenever you were needed for a mission so you were always training, which turned into a mistake.
During one of your sessions, you injured your back. It hurt bad enough you couldn’t sleep well and it was hard to keep up your training but you did. You figured it would go away soon enough so you pushed through and used ibuprofen to help ease the pain. Your dad was always so worried over you getting hurt so you didn’t tell him so he wouldn’t get stressed. It worked for a while until he showed up in the gym while you were practicing on one of the bags.
At first, he just watched you, admiring how much you enjoyed what you were doing but as he watched, he noticed your form starting to deteriorate, “Everything okay?” he asked, stepping away from the door frame and onto the gym floor.
You stopped what you were doing and looked at him, “Yeah why?” you asked, thinking you had been hiding yourself well he wouldn’t notice.
“Your form is off today and it seems like you’re pulling your punches,” he said, watching you.
You shrugged, ignoring the sharp pain that followed, “I think you’re seeing things old man.”
Bucky raised his eyebrow, “I see how it is,” he looked around for the tape you use for your hands and found it. He picked it up and started taping his own hands, “About we go a round huh? See how old I actually am?”
“It’s on,” you said.
The two of you took your stances and began, Bucky, knowing deep down you were injured and not telling him, instantly got you on the ground. He didn’t do it hard but once you hit the ground, you yelped and he immediately let go of you. This confirmed his suspicions as he had seen you get thrown to the ground by Bruce as the Hulk and you didn’t make any sounds of pain like you did now.
Your dad reached a hand out to help you up but you stayed on the ground, “Are you okay?” he asked, crouching down next to you.
“You didn’t have to be so hard,” you said, slowly sitting up.
“I’ve been worse on you Y/n,” he said, looking at you. He could see you trying hard to ignore whatever pain was in you and not cry, “You could’ve said you were hurting.”
“It’s not an injury. It’s just normal pain that comes with training,” you said, brushing off his comment.
“Y/n,” he said softly, lifting your chin up with his hand. You were really trying hard to not cry from the pain. He saw it in your eyes, “It’s okay. What’s going on?”
“It’s my back,” you mumbled, letting a few tears fall, “It’s been bugging me for a while.”
Bucky nodded and wiped your tears away with his thumb, “Let’s get you to the medbay then yeah?” he asked, gently lifting you up off of the ground. Once you were up, he put his hand on your back and led you to the medical room.
Bruce was there and looked surprised seeing the two of you, “What’s up you two?” he asked.
“Y/n injured her back,” Bucky said, “Is there anything you can do to help?”
Bruce nodded and motioned for you to sit on the empty bed. You sat down and your dad sat in the chair next to you. He held your hand as Bruce talked to you and asked questions about what was wrong.
“It just sounds like a pulled muscle but since it’s your back, you should stay in bed and get some rest,” he said, “And ice it every once in a while but no more than fifteen minutes at a time,” he handed your dad an ice pack.
“How long until I can go back to training?” you asked, making both men look at you.
“Y/n you need to take it easy,” your dad said.
“Maybe about a week but after that, you need to take breaks so you don’t overexert your muscles. Have a rest day or two,” Bruce explained.
You nodded and got off the bed. The sudden movement made you wince but you continued out of the room.
“Good luck,” Bruce said as Bucky followed you out.
~~~~~
You got to your room and collapsed face first on your bed, “This is horrible,” you mumbled, feeling the bed dip.
“It could be worse,” your dad said, resting his hand on your back and rubbing circles.
You groaned, making Bucky laugh at you, “If you just listen to what he says you’ll be fine. I promise. I’ve had my fair share of injuries and listening to the doc is the best thing to do.”
“But that’s no fun,” you whined.
“Would you rather be hurting all the time?” he countered.
“No,” you huffed, knowing your dad was right.
“I figured.”
Who Are You?
Pairing: Bucky Barnes x Reader
Words: 2800+
Request: Hi there! I absolutely Love your fics by the way ♥️ I have a request for a Bucky x Female reader one. I actually saw this prompt on Pinterest and I thought it was quite interesting. “I recognize this flower.” I sat in the hospital bed and turned to the man next to me, “But not you. Who are you?”
Natasha's phone goes off during the Avenger's weekly movie night, causing the people around her to groan. Tony pauses the movie before glancing towards her. "Well, answer it," he states annoyingly, causing the redhead to roll her eyes.
"Hello?" Nat mumbles into the phone after answering the unknown number, pressing the device against her ear.
"Hi, Natasha Romanoff?"
Her brows furrow as she crosses her arm over her chest. "Yes, it is. Who's this?" She asks as she feels everyone's eyes on her.
"This is Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan. You're on Y/N L/N's emergency call list-"
"Y/N?" Natasha mutters while sitting up in her spot, moving towards the edge of the couch. "Is she alright?"
"Miss L/N was involved in a car pile-up almost an hour ago."
A gasp leaves the redhead's lips before standing up from her seat and sprints towards her room. Bucky's blue eyes follow her, noticing the worry in her voice.
"Who's Y/N?" Tony asks the question of everyone's mind, causing Steve to shrug his shoulders.
Bucky stands from his seat as well, going to go find the redhead when Natasha runs back into the room. "I'm sorry, guys. You're going to have to continue without me," she states while throwing her coat on.
"Hey," Bucky calls out and walks towards her, causing the woman to stop in her tracks. "You're distraught. Let me drive you, okay?"
Natasha lets out a huff of breath, but nods her head at the super-soldiers offer. The drive towards the city is quiet, the only sound to be heard is the engine of the vehicle and Nat's leg bouncing vigorously.
"So, who's Y/N?" Bucky asks, breaking the silence and taking a quick glance towards Nat.
The woman sniffles a bit while tucking some hair behind her ear. "A good friend of mine. We met years ago. I cannot believe this happened to her. She's usually so cautious," Natasha mumbles and wipes the tears from her eyes.
"Did they mention her condition?"
"Yeah, she's not severely injured. The doctor said they had to do surgery to get the giant shard of glass out of her side, though. Apparently, her car had rolled a few times before slamming into someone else," she tells Bucky while staring out the window.
The super-soldier frowns and returns his gaze to the road in front of him. He reassures his vibranium hand over to Nat before squeezing her leg. "Hey, I'm sure she'll get through this, okay? Think positively," Bucky mumbles and Nat nods her head in response.
"You're right."
Bucky parks the vehicle and Natasha wastes no time exiting the car. He watches her quickly make her way towards the entrance, a deep sigh escaping his lips.
He catches up to the redhead easily and sees her standing at the reception desk, her arms waving all over the place.
"Y/N L/N. I'm the only family she has! The doctor even called me cause I'm on her emergency contact list. What room is she in?!" Natasha practically growls at the woman behind the desk.
Bucky rests a hand on her back and she snaps her head towards the brunette. "I got this, okay?" He mumbles.
Natasha nods her head in response before taking a few steps back. The receptionist looks up at him and he smiles awkwardly at her. "Hi, I'm sorry about her. She's a little distraught if you couldn't tell," he mentions and the woman sits back in her chair.
"I understand that she's distraught, but the policy is no visitor's the first forty-eight unless they're immediate family," she shrugs her shoulders while Bucky runs a hand through his hair.
"And if she doesn't have any immediate family? How do you think she'll feel when she wakes up with no one beside her?" Bucky asks with a raised eyebrow.
The woman in front of him parts her lips, not expecting such a response. She lets out a sigh and leans back on the desk. "Fine, I'll allow it. She's in room 304."
"Thank you," Bucky mumbles and turns his attention to Natasha. "C'mon."
His arm links with hers as he leads the redhead towards the elevator. "Thank you for doing that. I probably would've lashed out at her," Natasha mentions while Bucky presses the button to call the elevator.
"It's not a problem. Y/N means a lot to you and if she doesn't have family, then someone needs to be there for her."
Natasha glances up at him through her lashes and squeezes his arm in her hand. "She'd like you, you know," she mumbles, causing the super-soldier to look down at her. "The two of you would be good together."
A slight laugh leaves Bucky's lips as the two steps into the elevator. "Now, don't go playing matchmaker," he grins and presses the button for the third floor.
"I'm just saying," Natasha smirks when the elevator doors open back up. Bucky shakes his head and follows the woman down the hall.
Nat takes a deep breath before pushing the door to your room open. Bucky notices her eyes tearing up at the sight of your sleeping form. The redhead sits down beside your bed before grabbing a hold of your left hand.
"Do you want me to leave you alone for a bit?" Bucky asks his friend and Natasha glances up at him.
"Just give me a few minutes?" She whispers and Bucky nods his head.
"Absolutely, Nat. I'll just be outside."
-
Your eyes flutter open as the beeping sound slowly becomes louder. A small groan escapes your lips as the sun shines in your eyes. "Wha-" you cut yourself off upon noticing the blank white wall in front of you.
You glance to your right to see a bouquet of your favorite flowers. Lilies. "I recognize this flower," you grin, now knowing that Natasha's been here. You sit up in the hospital bed and turn your head to see a man sitting next to you. "But not you. Who are you?"
The brunette chuckles and gives you an awkward wave. "Uh, hi. I'm Bucky. Natasha's friend," he mumbles and you let out a quiet, "oh."
"Is she here?" You ask him and he nods his head, pointing towards the door.
"She said she would be right back," Bucky informs you. "How are you feeling?"
A wince leaves your lips as you adjust your seating position, resting your hand over your side. "I'm alright. Thank you," you smile softly, taking in Bucky's features.
He's really cute. You think to yourself as the two of you stare at one another. The door to your room opens and Natasha walks in. "Alright, Buck, they didn't have much of an-" She cuts herself off at the sight of you, her green eyes widening. "Y/N."
"Hey, Nat," you grin and the redhead runs over to you. Bucky grabs the food from her hands before her arms wrap around your neck.
"Careful, Nat," Bucky chuckles while you gently rub the woman's back.
"I'm so glad you're okay," she mumbles into your ear before pulling away from you.
You smile up at the redhead as she glides her fingers across your cheeks. "I'm sorry for worrying you," you tell her and Natasha shakes her head, resting her hand on your shoulder.
"It's not your fault, sweetie," Nat smiles down at you as Bucky moves from his spot, giving his seat to the redhead. "I want you to move in with me for a bit, okay? Until you're fully healed."
You rest your head against the pillow as your eyes move towards Bucky. "I understand and I definitely won't argue with a vacation," you wink at her, causing the two of them to laugh.
Natasha shakes her head and leans back in her chair. "So, you've met Bucky I see," she smirks while glancing between the two of you.
"I have. I was very confused about who he was when I woke up," you laugh while tucking some hair behind your ear.
"But not a bad sight to wake up to, am I right?" She winks at you, causing the super-soldier to groan in response.
"Nat-"
"I know what you're doing, Natasha," you tell her and gently cross your arms over your chest. "Don't be meddling."
The redhead rolls her eyes playfully before raising her hands in defense. "Fine, fine, I'll stop," she chuckles before standing up from her chair. "Let me go find out when you can leave."
A few days later, Bucky has an arm wrapped around your waist as he helps you into the compound. Natasha walks in front of you with your large suitcase as the three of you head towards her room.
"You okay? I'm not walking too fast, am I?" Bucky mumbles while looking down at you.
You tilt your chin to look up at him with a smile on your lips. "No, Bucky, I'm fine," you reassure him, feeling his vibranium fingers on your warm skin.
"C'mon love birds," Natasha calls out to the two of you, the redhead glancing over her shoulder.
A scoff leaves your lips and you roll your eyes. "I'm sorry about her," you whisper to Bucky, causing the brunette to laugh softly.
"It's alright. I've dealt with worse. You haven't met Sam yet," Bucky mentions to you while the two of you finally reach Nat's room.
His fingers glide across your lower back as you move to sit on her bed, a slight wince escaping your lips. Both Nat and Bucky glance over at you with worry in their eyes.
"Guys, I'm fine. Having broken ribs is a bitch," you giggle while holding a hand to your side.
"You think we haven't had broken ribs?" Natasha snorts while moving your suitcase towards the corner of the room. "Sweetie, we're Avengers."
You roll your eyes again before glancing towards the redhead. "Then you should know that I'm fine," you tell her with a grin.
"I'll uh," Bucky clears his throat, catching you and Nat's attention, "I'll leave you girls be. See you around, Y/N."
You smile at the brunette and give him a tiny wave. "See you, Bucky," you mumble loud enough for him to hear, his blue eyes meeting yours for a few moments.
He smiles at you before walking out of the room, causing Natasha to turn towards you with a knowing look on her face.
You lift your finger, a chuckle already leaving your lips. "Don't even say it, Nat," you tell her and the woman raises her hands in defense.
"I wasn't going to say anything," she grins and you hum in response.
"Mhm, sure."
-
It's been a few weeks since you moved in with Nat and you'd be lying if you said you hated it. Yeah, Natasha can be a bit overbearing since you're still healing but it's not bad whatsoever. Plus, you get to see Bucky almost every day.
The two of you have become pretty close in the past twenty-one days, and as much as you hate your best friend for meddling into things… you're not completely upset about the outcome.
Natasha and the rest of the team are currently out doing a mission and Bucky volunteered to stay behind to keep an eye on you since Tony mentioned that Nat needed to be a part of the mission.
You haven't left your shared room all day long as your side has been aging for hours on end. You took some ibuprofen that Natasha left behind before deciding to take a shower.
Bucky glances towards the room you're staying in as he decides to make the two of you breakfast. He's in the middle of cooking some bacon when a crashing sound comes from down the hall.
His ears perk up and his heart pounding wildly in his chest when he hears you cry out in pain. "Shit," Bucky mutters and quickly turns the stove off before running towards Natasha's room. "Y/N?! Let me in."
The sliding door opens a few seconds later and the brunette rushes into the room. "Bucky!" Your cries echo off the wall as Bucky stands in the doorway of the bathroom, seeing your naked body slightly covered by the shower curtain.
"What hurts? Talk to me," he tells you while crouching beside the tub, his flesh hand resting on your arm.
Your eyes meet his and he can see the excruciating pain in them. "My ribs," you breathe out before eliciting another pained cry.
"O-Okay, I'm gonna get you out, alright?" He mumbles loud enough for you to hear while ripping the rest of the shower curtain off of the hooks.
You nod your head as Bucky wraps one of your arms around his neck before the super-soldier gently lifts you from the tub. His vibranium arm is tucked under your legs as he walks you into the bedroom.
"This is so embarrassing," you mumble and Bucky lets out a slight chuckle.
"Aye, it's not so bad. Could've been someone else here to see you naked," Bucky winks and you let out a scoff before laughing loudly, swatting at his hands.
The two of you laugh as Bucky grabs the chair by Natasha's desk before sitting beside you. "How’re your ribs feeling?" He asks seriously, his fingers itching to reach out to caress your skin.
You turn your head to face him, seeing his blue eyes steadily glance at your side. "They hurt a little bit, but I think they're alright. Still healing from the car accident, and I'm pretty sure this didn't help the process," you sigh while adjusting your lying position. "Hey, could you possibly get me some clothes?"
"O-Oh! Y-Yeah, I'm sorry. I-"
"It's okay, Buck," you giggle and rest your hands on the wrapped-up shower curtain.
He lifts himself from the chair before heading towards your dresser. You watch him as he opens your panty drawer and a blush dusts your cheeks.
Bucky grabs a pair of panties before moving on, grabbing some sweatpants from the next drawer below it. "Bucky?" You call out to him and the brunette glances over his shoulder. "Woul-Could it be possible to wear one of your shirts?"
His breath hitches in his throat as his heart flutters in his chest. "I-Uh, y-yeah, hold on," Bucky mutters while giving you your other two pieces of clothing.
Once he leaves the room you do your best to slide your panties and sweatpants on, saving your embarrassment of Bucky seeing you completely nude.
Bucky walks back into the room almost two minutes later, a red Henley you see him wear often in his hands. "Here," he mentions while handing you the long-sleeved shirt.
"Thank you," you grin at him while moving to sit up. Bucky swiftly turns his head, looking towards the window as you throw the shirt over your head. "I appreciate you, Buck."
"I- uh, I made breakfast for us," he says timidly, bringing his flesh hand to the back of his neck. "Would you join me?"
Your heart pounds against your chest and you nod your head in response, the smile on your lips growing. "I'd love to."
Bucky moves towards you and helps you off of the bed you're laying on. "C'mon you," he smiles down at you as your eyes flicker towards him.
"You do this with all the dames, Bucky?" You chuckle while wrapping an arm around his shoulders.
He breathily chuckles and shakes his head. "I actually don't. Believe it or not, but I haven't tried to win over a woman in over seventy years," Bucky mumbles as the two of you walk towards the kitchen.
"Seriously?" You ask him as you move to sit on the stool, a slight wince escaping your lips.
"Is that hard to believe?" He questions while grabbing the two plates from the cupboard.
You watch him reheat the food with sinched eyebrows. "Not at all. You're pretty attractive," you mention to him before Bucky glances over his shoulder.
A blush dusts his cheeks while grabbing the plate from the microwave. "T-Thank you, Y/N," Bucky whispers and you push yourself off of the stool you're sitting on.
The brunette sets the plate onto the counter as you make your way towards him. "Could I kiss you?" You whisper back and bring your hand to his face.
Bucky's eyes widen as his vibranium hand grabs a hold of your hip. "Y-You want to kiss me?" He asks, his eyes casting down at you.
A grin comes to your lips and you nod your head in response, your hands moving to rest on the back of his neck. "I do," you confirm and Bucky's breath hitches in his throat.
You pull his face closer to yours and feel his nose nudge against yours. You swallow thickly before letting out a ragged breath as your fingers glide through his hair.
A light gasp escapes your lips when Bucky's lips brush against yours, your grip on him tightening. Your eyes flutter shut as you prepare to kiss him when a familiar voice calls out your name.
"Y/N! We're bac-"
You and Bucky pull away from each other to see Natasha and Sam standing by the pantry doors. "Uh, we can explain."
In which bucky learns how to be a boyfriend.
a whole lot of fluff, clueless bucky and some cuddling, bucky is a sucker for cuddling! this is the last part of the losing you series 🥺 i’ve loved writing this - thank you for the continuous amount of love and support on it.
just a short little piece to finish it off!
losing you masterlist! happy reading!
Waking up early is something bucky does everyday. He doesn’t set an alarm or leave the curtains open before he goes to bed, he just wakes up at 6 in the morning naturally. You absolutely loathe it. Not only does the warmth and your beefy boyfriend leave the bed, bucky barnes does not know how to be quiet. You have to give it to him, he’s been working on a lot of things. His emotions, communication etc. But understanding that you don’t want to wake up at 6am isn’t one of the things he just can’t get over. Every night before bed for the last two weeks he’s asked you to wake up early with him for a coffee and a run, every night you say no. You need your beauty sleep, and you’re working from home at the moment so you’re taking every chance of lie in you can.
“Baby, please” Bucky pleaded, kissing behind your ear as you lay in bed. You were reading a report you wrote up today, and bucky just got back from a mission. You would’ve thought he’d be exhausted after fighting all of those bad guys, but if anything - bucky has more energy. You were kind of hoping he would drop the 6 am thing and just sleep in with you. But no, he’s just as adamant as two weeks ago. Maybe if you weren’t absolutely exhausted from the last couple of months at work you would do this coffee and run with him, you love spending time with bucky.
After the fight, bucky has been better. He hasn’t changed, he’s still the same stubborn and blunt man you met a year ago. But he’s learning every day, going to his therapy sessions, hanging out with friends. Bucky is doing a lot better. He tells you when you’ve hurt his feelings and encourages you to do the same, you communicate and talk through your problems no matter how loud it gets.
Bucky is dropping you to the bar, massaging you whenever you want, getting you cakes and buying you dinner.
And even the simple things where he kisses your temple, or tucks you into his side. Bucky barnes is everything you could ever want and more.
“Why do you want to go out at 6 am?” You giggled turning over to face him, bucky was now on his side his head leaning on his hand, so he was looking down at you. You wanted to know why he was adamant on getting you out at an ungodly hour.
“Just want to spend time with my girl, is that too much to ask for?” He said and you smiled softly, pecking his lips. Your hand goes to his shoulder as you shake your head.
“No it’s not” You said and then nodded to yourself. “Ok, we’ll go for a coffee and a run tomorrow morning” You said, giving in to his pleads. Buckys eyes widened and he immediately buried his head into your neck, his arm going across you waist. You laughed loudly as he kissed down your neck.
“Need to get some sleep then, you’re not going to like me at 6 am”
Bucky tutted at you placing the report that was resting on your stomach on your bedside table. “I like you all the time, no matter how early it is” He said and you smiled placing your lips on his.
“Even when i’m grumpy?” You asked in between kisses.
“Even when you’re grumpy”
With that, you both got out of the bed to do your night time routine. You had been staying over at buckys place for the last couple of days and before that bucky was staying at yours. You like to be around each other, you’re not dependent on each other but you do like to be together. Bucky is so comforted by your energy, always ready to listen, help and offer the best advice you possibly can.
You get out your tooth brush as place it under the tap, and then put the toothpaste on it. Bucky is beside you doing the same to his, you hit your hip of his sending him a little smile to comfort him. You know how he gets before bed. Before this, sex with you was distracting him from all the nightmares and ugly things of the night. Now that you’re together and not doing anything to distract himself from his own harming thoughts, he gets nervous.
Nervous that he might hurt you or injure himself. You know he would never intentionally hurt you, no matter how mean bucky can get he’d never lay a hand on. You’re very sure of that.
You spit the toothpaste out, running your tooth brush under the water.
“You doing ok?” You asked and bucky nodded, cleaning his own tooth brush. You raised an eyebrow leaning against the sink. “I’m just, a little anxious. Nothing new, baby” He said putting his tooth brush away. You pouted and brought him into a hug.
“How about some face masks?” You asked with a grin, before bucky could even blink you had two face masks in your hand and was pulling him over the toilet. You practically pushed you boyfriend onto the toilet seat, he wasn’t wearing a shirt (requested by you) so it made it easier to do the face mask.
You put yours on quickly, and then rushed back to a bored looking bucky.
“You’ll love it” You reassured opening up the packet. Bucky sighed “The things i do for you” He mumbled closing his eyes and placing his hands on either side of you waist.
You place the face mask on your boyfriends face, carefully spreading it over his cheeks and forehead. He had perfect skin, you would be forever jealous of it.
“Feels nice, doesn’t it?”
He nodded leaning into your hand a little bit, you could see he was a little sleepy. “Can we watch an episode of new girl before bed?” You asked and of course bucky nodded. He secretly really liked the show, but he would never tell you that. You already knew, that’s why you asked.
“We’ll wash these off after this episode and then head to bed. Sound good, buck?” You asked and bucky nodded placing a hand on your shoulder guiding you back into the bedroom and grabbing the remote off your dresser. He was really quiet, which was something you’d have to get used to. It was just before bed when he got super quiet and you had to do all the talking. You didn’t mind one bit, bucky is a very good listener. He could listen to you talk for hours on end.
During the episode, bucky lay his head in your lap. You massaged his scalp, sometimes bucky reminds you of a little golden retriever.
“This part is funny” You said and bucky nodded agreeing rubbing at his eyes. You could tell he was tired.
“Why don’t we go wash these off and finish the episode after we get back from our run?”
Bucky sighed and stretched standing up, and then holding out his hands to help you up. You walked in front of him, bucky slapped your ass. He just couldn’t help it, your ass looks amazing in those shorts. You giggled and hit his shoulder.
You washed both of your faces and squished buckys cheeks together, he had a nice glow about him recently.
Bucky would definitely say it’s because of you.
You would say it’s because bucky is actually taking his mental health seriously.
“I love you” Bucky said and you stopped drying his face. You’ve said it before, but bucky had never really understood it until now. You doing all of this for him made him feel so happy, so warm and loved inside. The fact that you would stop watching your favourite show for him, give up your time and good face masks for him and constantly reassure and care for him.
Bucky barnes loves you so fucking much and he just can’t comprehend it, but he’s working on it.
“I love that you’re willing to wake up early for me, and to sit up and cuddle me when you’re obviously tired. I love that you’re always around, ready with advice, i love that you give the best hugs and know the right thing to say all the time” He said you blushed placing a hand on his cheek.
“I love you, Y/N. And i hate that i treated you so badly. I love you, and i’ll never love anyone the way i love you” He said and you bit your lip to try and stop the tears.
“I love you more, james”
And with that you both settled down and went to bed, you turned the tv off and looked over at bucky. “Shirt off or on?” You teased and bucky smirked.
“Is that even a question? Definitely off”
Steve Rogers Fanfiction Recommendations
Happy birthday, Steve!
I know that there are some (a lot?) of steve fans who sometimes struggle to find fics focused on him, so I am here now putting a list of Steve fics. I was going to fics that I haven't seen recommended a lot and most of the ones on this post have less than 200 kudos only, but I end up putting everything (it's probably easier to put my bookmarks as public but well...). It's a massive list (over 100 fics?), so it's will be separated into several posts/reblogs.
Not all of them are from Steve's POV or even have him as the main 'main' character, but rest assured he played an important role and is featured heavily. Lots of these are friendship-focused but I categorized them. The shippy ones are mostly samsteve, thundershield, and some rare pairings because I don't venture to other ships a lot and when I did it's to the rare ones instead lol. Hopefully, any of you can find some gems from this list and these are as enjoyable or as good as I remembered. I'll continue to update it, hopefully, every time I find new ones.
Fics are under read more.
General
The Rocket's Red Glare
Steve was born on the Fourth of July (no joke), so a party is in order! Unfortunately, PTSD decides to rear its ugly head. Fortunately, Steve's got an entire team at his back to help him through it. And screaming goats.
an entry in the scrapbook of absurdity
In which Steve turns into a baby and bites people.
Baby Steve Adventures
Captain America gets hit by a spell during a battle. The rest of the Avengers look after him.
Do You Remember Being Happy? ('Cause I Sure Don't)
"Dragr," Thor called them. "Demons" Clint had said. "Thieves" is what Steve labels them as. AKA, the one where Steve is captured by creatures that feed off of happy memories, and the team is left to pick up the pieces. Post-Avengers.
In Search of (Bucky, Family, Home)
Pairings: Steve Rogers & Natasha Romanov & Sam Wilson
A week following the events of CATWS, Steve recruits Natasha and Sam to help find Bucky.
Sam raised an eyebrow. “Do we need to recap again? You were shot three times, beaten near to death by an enhanced super soldier with a metal arm and then almost drowned. Yeah, your ass is going to need a few more days of healing time.”
The Truth When Captains Meet
Steve Rogers wakes up on an alien’s space ship being carried bridal style by Carol Danvers. As far as first meetings go, it’s memorable.
Irish Coffee
Pairings: Jessica Jones & Steve Rogers
Jessica runs into an incognito Cap at a cafe. They form an unlikely friendship of sorts.
The Lifetimes of Steve Rogers (Series)
What happens when Steve Rogers steps onto the quantum platform to return the Stones? Where does he go? What challenges does he find? Who does he meet? How many lifetimes can one man have?
Fifty-Two Pickup
Less than a week after the fall of the Triskelion, Steve Rogers is released from the hospital. Although his physical wounds are almost fully healed, other injuries need a bit more time, and some help from friends.
little kids get big so fast
Steve ends up having to take care of the deaged Defenders.
Grampa Steve's Bedtime Stories
If Mommy was away for work, then Morgan’s Grampa Steve came over to stay with her. He’d tuck her in, let her give Mommy a kiss on video chat, then hand her the picture of Daddy for his kiss. Once Daddy’s picture was back on the bookshelf, Grampa Steve would turn off the bedside lamp so that Miss Friday could cover the ceiling with stars, and ask Morgan what story she wanted to hear.
“Captain Steve, Grampa! Tell me Captain Steve!”
Grampa Steve sometimes read to her from books and other times watched a movie with her, but her favorite by far was when he told her Captain Steve’s Adventures Through the Multiverse.
On Camping Trips
Sam is more Hermione than Natasha is, and Steve doesn't want to be Harry.
Powerful
Steve loses the advantages of the super-soldier serum. This is not a tragedy.
His Dream
Pairings: Steve Rogers & Sam Wilson
As if on cue, Steve cut him off with a loud sneeze.
"Yeah. Like that." Sam nodded. "And please sneeze into your elbow next time, dude. You could've just started an epidemic."
"Sorry. Allergies." Steve excused, and Sam raised an eyebrow.
"How do you know it's allergies?" Sam asked, and Steve sighed, putting the ingredients together and solving the mystery of what the gas had actually done.
The answer wasn't ideal. "It feels like the seasonal allergies I had before. Before the serum- and I haven't had them since the serum."
Realization clicked in Sam's head.
"The gas de-serumed you."
Steve swallowed and nodded reluctantly.
OR: Steve gets temporarily de-serumed, with his height and stature staying the same but his immune system being as bad as it was before, and has to stay in the hospital to prevent a severe allergic reaction or illness. Sam stays with him the whole time, making sure he's not alone.
Pairings: Steve Rogers & Natasha Romanov
When Steve Rogers tells her, “Don’t be a stranger,” as they’re all going their own ways after New York, it makes her want to laugh.
Draw/Breath
Pairings: Steve Rogers & Natasha Romanov
Natasha like knowing what makes people tick. She likes knowing things, about her teammates and her coworkers and herself. Oddly enough, sometimes other people like knowing her too.
AKA: Natasha wants to know why Steve isn’t drawing anymore, and takes the long way round to get her answer. Because why not.
With Magic We Do Fly
Pairings: Wanda Maximoff & Steve Rogers
In Civil War we see Wanda fling Steve into the air with her magic. They must have practiced that, right?
Que Wanda throwing Steve against a wall. Many times.
Just Like We Practiced
Pairings: Wanda Maximoff & Steve Rogers
Steve had said, in the movie when he asked Wanda to lift him into the building, "Just like we practiced." But just how did they come up with the idea of her lifting people with her powers, and putting them up somewhere like an escalator? Perhaps it was because Wanda accidentally sent a certain tall, blond Avenger face-first into the floor once and he decided he would help her learn to utilize this as a confidence building exercise. Natasha keeps an eye, Thor and Sam help build the training grounds, and Wanda has found her new home. Takes place between AGE OF ULTRON and CIVIL WAR.
Black and White but Red and Blue
They're watching black and white film reels, but Steve sees them in colour.
"My shield may be black and white but it was red and blue. Just like the blue sky under which red blood was spilled. Like Bucky's blue eyes and Peggy's red lips..."
The Road Warriors
Characters: Sam Wilson (Marvel), Steve Rogers, Natasha Romanov (Marvel), Wanda Maximoff
It wasn't pretty, but somehow the four of them managed to make it through two years on the run.
We'll Fix It
Pairings: Steve Rogers & Natasha Romanov
Steve has a hard time after his battle with The Winter Soldier and isn't sure what to do with himself. After not seeing him for a week, Natasha finally shows up to his apartment unannounced to figure out how they can get back to work. There is some crying involved.
From Here On Out
Pairings: Steve Rogers & Natasha Romanov
The Accords, the search for Bucky, the fight at the airport ... In a world where nothing will ever be the same, sometimes the road to rebuilding trust and friendship is a little rockier than it should be.
Set post-Civil War but pre-Infinity War.
I have this breath and I hold it tight
Parings: Wanda Maximoff & Steve Rogers, Clint Barton & Wanda Maximoff, Wanda Maximoff & Vision
Steve finally goes to Wanda’s tiny room and taps on the doorframe, although it’s hardly necessary, with the slightly warped floorboards creaking under his feet. “Hey,” he says. “Got a minute?”
Wanda's been a little withdrawn since Steve broke everyone out of the Raft. She's had a lot to think about.
to you.
Pairings: Pietro Maximoff & Wanda Maximoff, Clint Barton & Wanda Maximoff, Wanda Maximoff & Natasha Romanov, Wanda Maximoff & Steve Rogers, Wanda Maximoff & Sam Wilson, Wanda Maximoff & Tony Stark
New Love
Pairings: Diana (Wonder Woman) & Steve Rogers
Near the end of World War II, Diana Prince finds herself attempting to reconnect to her long-gone, beloved Steve Trevor. However, she comes across Steve Rogers instead.
Sharing Life (And Canned Green Beans)
Pairings: Steve Rogers & Natasha Romanov
It’s Thanksgiving, and Steve is hiding in the second living room on the 8th floor of the penthouse apartments with a can of green beans.
I'm Fine
Steve slowly began to realize that the problem with being a national icon, a hero, and a role model, is that somehow, he became more than human. He become a symbol, not a person. So when he becomes increasingly unhappy, deeply depressed, and utterly adrift in a world where he doesn't belong, the loneliness and isolation are unbearable. How could anyone believe that an iconic hero like himself was really just an ordinary kid from Brooklyn, dying inside because everything he'd gained still wasn't enough to replace everything he'd lost? How could he possibly bring himself to bleed on the ones he loves? So he tells himself the same lie over and over, hoping one day, he'll believe it.
dogpile
"My dog ate my mission report" An injured Steve remembers something he has to do. Unabashed Steve and dogs fluff. "Didn't peg you for a pet guy." "Allergies."
Alone In This World (Together)
Pairings: Steve Rogers & Natasha Romanov & Sam Wilson
“We’re fugitives,” Steve said finally. “It might never get better.”
“The world’s always going to need saving," Sam replied. "We’re still Avengers. No one can take that away from us.” Then, like they hadn't been having an entire conversation before, “So when do we leave?”
“Once night falls.”
Do we have any idea where she is?”
“No.” Steve took a sip of his coffee. “But I know where she’ll be.”
it gets the worst at night
Pairings: Steve Rogers & Natasha Romanov
Here's how it goes: Natasha sometimes shares a bed with Steve. It's not what it sounds like.
(In which there are Colombian drug lords, awkward boners, cuddly super-soldiers and the Avengers are all giant dorks.)
Shelter
Sam and Steve, right after the fall of SHIELD.
Princely Bickering
Pairings: Jane Foster/Thor, Steve Rogers & Sam Wilson, Steve Rogers & Jane Foster, Steve Rogers & Thor
Steve allows Sam to lean up and inspect his head for bruises and blood. He then checks out Steve’s eyes. ‘Do you know where you are?’ Steve rolls his eyes. ‘Don’t be an ass, Cap, apparently you can break.’ ‘London, England, chasing apparently useless Hydra intel despite having about five hundred international arrest warrants out for us because we’re just that stupid,’ says Steve. Sam pats him - gently - on the shoulder. Life on the run isn't easy, especially not after an injury. Fortunately Steve still has a few allies left.
And The Seconds Tick Down
AU of Civil War. How the world ended in twenty steps when Steve died.
"Grant" and "Francis" Go Shopping
Pairings: Clint Barton & Steve Rogers
Steve and Clint both have holiday shopping to do for their family of choice, so they make a day trip to an outlet mall, have a few heart to hearts, use some coupons, buy a bunch of presents, and eventually get through their shopping lists.
Five Times Clint Barton Spoke with Steve Rogers about Growing Old and the One Time He Didn't.
Pairings: Clint Barton & Steve Rogers
When Steve Rogers reappeared from the past as an old man, there was a lot of catching up to do. Clint Barton made sure nobody got left behind.
Hammer's Totally Heavy-Handed and Incompetent Revenge
"So, at the end of IM2, Justin Hammer swears revenge on Pepper. He waits until Tony and Rhodey are halfway across the world to launch his attack.
Unfortunately for him, thanks to SHIELD, Iron Man and War Machine aren't the only superheroes in Pepper's rolladex. Steve thinks Pepper's just swell and doesn't take too kindly to somebody trying to hurt her."
Cue badass!Steve and competent!Pepper
Fan Mail
Steve starts getting his fan mail and receives an invitation to the prom. Written for a prompt at the Avengers kink meme. It was a great prompt, and so much fun to write and get feedback for!
Prom. Steve 'Grandpa Iceberg' Rogers at a 21st-century high school prom. "This isn't happening. This whole conversation is just an elaborate practical joke. Bruce really just has orders for widgets or something."
Bruce waved the printouts at him. "Fraid not. I don't really do practical jokes. Messing with other people's moods just seems. I don't know. Karmically unwise."
Mascot
Steve runs. People see Steve run. Steve gets adopted by the neighbourhood he runs through every week day morning. He finds this confusing. Tony finds it amusing.
Locks Not Replaced
Tony angsts back at Avengers' HQ, Ross is a bully and Steve makes sure he doesn't get away with it. In other words, there is much regret, a bit on the philosophy of locks, adventure and far too many Robin Hood metaphors.
woof
For a prompt on the avengers kinkmeme: "...something different happens when Steve gets Dr Erskine's serum plus the Vita ray treatment... Steve does get taller and stronger, but when the first full moon hits, he turns into a big friendly looking dog. Yes, he's a weredog, not a werewolf."
Mission: Baby
Pairings: James "Bucky" Barnes & Steve Rogers
The Asset finds himself in charge of the care of a small baby, but somehow he knows—he has to protect the baby from all harm, whatever the cost.
14 Tracks
Pairings: Peggy Carter/Steve Rogers, Steve Rogers & Avengers Team 14 tracks from Steve's iPod and how they got on there.
Life Will Rattle Your Bones
Pairings: Erik Lehnsherr & Steve Rogers
In war-torn Germany, the paths of Steve Rogers and Erik Lehnsherr cross, part, and cross again.
come build me up
Pairings: Sharon Carter & Steve Rogers, Steve Rogers & Sam Wilson, James "Bucky" Barnes & Steve Rogers
“Do you ever feel like -- like you joined up because you wanted to do good. You wanted to do the right thing but somewhere along the way, you just lost the whole fucking plot.”
“All of the time.”
Or: the one where Captain America and Agent 13 give long distance friendship a whirl.
Down in the Worn Out Place Again
Pairings: Wanda Maximoff & Natasha Romanov, Steve Rogers & Natasha Romanov, Steve Rogers & Wanda Maximoff
“You don't look a day over 85, Captain,” Wanda says.
Natasha smiles, just barely, and nudges Steve with her elbow. “She makes jokes now.”
(Post AoU, stories about friendship.)
Satellites
Characters: Natasha Romanov, Steve Rogers, Sam Wilson (Marvel), Tony Stark, Clint Barton, Nick Fury Pairings: Natasha Romanov & Steve Rogers, Minor Steve Rogers/Sam Wilson, Minor Clint Barton/Natasha Romanov
In the immediate aftermath of SHIELD's collapse and Steve's plunge into the Potomac, Natasha considers her place in the world. Also the fact that Steve is depressing.
Timeless Classics
Pairings: Steve Rogers & Avengers Team Five An undetermined number of times (six, apparently) Steve unexpectedly got the reference (sort of), and one time everyone discovered something new together.
you just wait and see
Pairings: Rocket Raccoon & Steve Rogers
“Thor said you’re the captain.” Rogers says, his voice distant, sad smile growing into a sadder grin. “Tough job.”
The Small Hours
Pairings: Steve Rogers & T'Challa, James "Bucky" Barnes & Steve Rogers
"I'm not getting him back, am I." The words were flatly delivered – not a question so much as fatigued resignation. "We will do everything we can to help him," T'Challa quietly replied, but he wouldn't lie, not about this. Not to a fellow warrior he respected on and off the field of battle. "The possibility does exist, however, that the triggers are permanent."
The Man We All Remember From the Newsreels
Still getting used to the twenty-first century, Steve comforts himself with memories of long-gone friends. But Howard Stark, the man Steve remembers, is nothing like the man he sees in the newsreels.
we're all choir boys at best
Characters: Steve Rogers, Johnny Storm
You are totally getting laid tonight. "Please stop talking." You hijacked my brain first, this is totally not my fault.
Epistaxis
Steve doesn't worry the first time he gets a bloody nose that won't quit. But when it happens a second, third, fourth... He, and his teammates, start to get concerned.
You Close Your Eyes and the Glory Fades
His body isn’t his own, he knows that, knew before the procedure that everything would change. That was the easiest thing to wrap his head around, actually, the physical changes. He’s used to his body betraying him, so this is just another thing to learn his way around. But the colors of everything, even the sliver of blue sky he could see, craning his head at the tiny window, look different.
Looking For Answers (From The Great Beyond)
After the Battle of New York is over, and Loki and the tesseract are returned to Asgard, Steve takes a road trip across the country, and tries to figure out what he wants to do next.
Mourning the Future
Steve's ties to the past and the future are pretty tenuous, and the serum ensures he lives in an eternal present state of ever-youthful vigour. When an old war buddy gets handed his last marching orders, Steve has to wonder if everyone will eventually leave.
Riviera Life
Sam and Steve have been traversing Europe looking for Bucky. Not everyone is convinced it isn’t an open invitation road trip.
Voluntary Bros.
Characters: Steve Rogers, Johnny Storm
"Dude, you could be twins, they tested you before they defrosted you to see if you were a clone or something, or if he was a clone," Clint said.
"I want to talk to him, I think. I mean, a girl threw her latte at me last week for not calling her back and this dude felt me up at an art gallery yesterday," Steve said.
Two Brooklynites and One Big Apple
Pairings: Miles Morales & Steve Rogers, James "Bucky" Barnes/Steve Rogers
“You did good out there today,” Captain America said, brushing a layer of detritus from his unfathomably broad shoulder. “I’ll see you around.”
“Not if I see you first,” replied Miles, fingergunning with one hand as he sent a web rope fwipping off into the distance with the other, catapulting himself away at tremendous speed.
... in which two superheroes battle with bad guys, embark on community art lessons, and a friendship forms along the way.
Battle Fatigue
Steve thought he was doing okay. Things weren't going great, but they were fine, manageable even, and then suddenly they weren't.
We Become New Yorkers (or: Five Times Steve Rogers Looked For Home, and One Time Home Found Him)
New York is a million cities at the same time. This is how Steve found his.
A beautiful day in the neighborhood
In which Steve and Peter learn that the best way to get through a bad situation is together. And to avoid collapsing buildings. And that concussions are terrible, terrible things.
Leviticus 25
"You want to save Bucky Barnes? You are going to have to put your own house in order first because he is going to need a rock to cling to. You are not ready to be that rock for him. You owe it to him -- and more importantly, you owe it to yourself -- to figure things out, figure out how you can be happy in this time and place, whether or not Barnes is with you."
Strike
Sometimes the road to recovery involves bowling. Conveniently, so does the one to the Grand Canyon.
Conversation in Wakanda
“I have been told that you had the privilege to share a training session with some of our Dora Milaje,” T’Challa says. “May I ask how it went?”
“Well,” the Captain huffs. “There’s no polite way to say it: I had my ass handed to me. Repeatedly.”
He sounds and looks utterly delighted.
Contact Light
Everyone thought computers would be the thing that really blew Steve's mind about the 21st century. They were wrong. When he finds out that he missed the moon landing, it's the start of an ongoing obsession with space that maybe involves Neil deGrasse Tyson, Twitter, and Star Trek marathons.
Twenty-Two
“This is Lucky,” Clint said when a dog got between him and Natasha. Lucky’s vest was bright, like desert mornings and night explosions.
“Does he help?” Natasha asked.
Clint pressed his hands flat on the counter behind him. “He saved my life.”
Natasha looked at Steve, her expression fierce. Steve resisted the urge to yank down his sleeves. Instead, he dug his nails into the puckered skin on his forearms.
AKA An AU in which Steve is a veteran just trying to survive (or not).
Gray
Peter doesn't expect Steve to show up at his house one night when he gets home from school. He also doesn't expect to have a long conversation with him, and choose to be on his side instead.
We're Happy, Free, Confused, and Lonely at the Same Time.
"Tony isn't sure, but he *thinks* Steve Rogers is going to try and argue with him about not being a kid, while wrapped up in a fluffy blanket and plaid pyjama pants watching a Disney movie. Tony really hopes that is the case. The Captain America voice looses all affect when wrapped up in that blanket and Tony can't wait to inform him as such." - The one where Tony realises that Captain America and Steve Rogers are not the same person, and Steve is so much younger then he thought.
This Isn't A Love Song, This Isn't A Fable
Steve's not OK with people's perception of Captain America, no matter what he says or how much he pretends otherwise. It's like no one in this time period realizes that there's more to him than a spangly outfit. And yes, he's including the Avengers in that. ... or, the one where everything's all right, until it's not.
it's safe here in our new world
Post TWS. In which Natasha and Steve go shopping, have Thursday night movie nights, and learn that Natasha loves to platonically kiss Steve. Which is good, because Steve loves being platonically kissed by Natasha.
Shadowboxing
Pairings: Matt Murdock & Steve Rogers
It doesn’t matter how many times you fall – what matters most is how many times you get back up. Steve Rogers knew this lesson far too well and it was one Matt Murdock had endured all his life. With both men at their lowest, could a chance friendship bring each of them to their feet again?
Everybody Eats When They Come to My House
Pairings: Steve Rogers & Natasha Romanov, Steve Rogers & Sam Wilson, James "Bucky" Barnes & Steve Rogers
“You’ll ruin your dinner,” Sam says, gesturing with Steve with his spatula.
i fear for the calendar; its days are numbered
Pairings: Steve Rogers & Natasha Romanov, Steve Rogers & Sam Wilson
Before she goes off the grid, Natasha gives Steve her phone number. He’s honored that he’s the only one to be trusted with it, but quickly learns that she spends most of her free time texting him Dad jokes.
Status Quo Ante
Pairings: James "Bucky" Barnes & Steve Rogers
A tale in which Sam suspects he should be used to this by now, for values of 'this' that involve certain folks he hangs out with and situations he finds himself in, Team Cap becomes Team Ex-Cap becomes TBD, and nobody but Clint really wants to know what happened to Scott Lang's GI Joes. (Sam Wilson from the final scene to the mid-credits scene.)
The Glass Parade
Pairings: Steve Rogers & Natasha Romanov, Clint Barton/Natasha Romanov
Steve thinks that he’s seen Natasha be at least three different people in the short time he’s known her, and he isn’t sure which one is real.
In which the most confusing part of the future is how much Steve has in common with Natasha, and the fact that she seems dead-set on being his friend.
Still Life
Steve Rogers and a very modern form of art therapy. (The one where Steve draws himself out of despair and into some notoriety when his cartoons hit the internet, but he's still not allowed to look at Tumblr without an okay from Pepper.)
Selective Service
The serum's given Steve a lot, but it hasn't taken anything away from him. Not even the things he never wanted in the first place.
I'm a Hustler, Baby
Steve Rogers has a talent for pool--and for making others believe he's terrible at it.
The Healing Properties of Felt-Tip Pens
Rapid healing has worked wonders on Steve Rogers' body, but occasionally it really screws with his head. In the aftermath of torture, Bruce Banner helps Steve to reconcile mind and body.
If I Die Before I Wake
It's his job, as their leader, to endure the sadistic focus of their captor, and that is the one thought that carries Steve through.
Even Gods Do
Captain America doesn't have a good relationship with sleep anymore. Also, he's not a toy.
Under My Skin
Written for a prompt on avengerkink: I want to see something where, for whatever reason, Steve's accelerated healing turns out to be a bad thing. Something where the faster healing is making things worse. I would prefer something other than the standard, super-healing allows for more torture without death. “He's lucky – to have the serum, to have you all.” Tony wasn't sure about that first part. When one faced death and destruction every day on the job, there were many advantages to having a healing factor...and a great many disadvantages as well.
A Glossary of the 21st Century
Pairings: pre-Steve Rogers/Natasha Romanov
Steve's sick of not understanding what's going on, and the team are not all that helpful, so he starts keeping an illustrated notebook for further research. With the help of wiki, google and Logan he starts to settle in and find his place in the twenty-first century.
Blanket Gift Policy
“You didn’t,” Bucky said, with no real hope of being contradicted. Clint shrugged helplessly and passed him the large, soft bundle wrapped in shiny purple foil.
“Sorry.” Tony covered his eyes with one hand.
“I’m getting a migraine.”
“So,” Bruce said wearily, “counting Clint, me, Bucky, Tony, and Sam, that brings it up to five.”
“Excuse you, mine’s not a blanket,” Sam said. “Mine’s a slanket. Big difference.”
Bucky resisted the urge to throw the whole heap of parcels at Sam’s head. “Because it has sleeves? It’s still a blanket, Wilson. They’re all blankets. Even Thor’s direct-from-Asgard raven gift delivery was a cloak, which just means it’s a blanket with a strap. We all got Steve a goddamn blanket.”
One Tin Soldier
Written for a prompt at avengerkink: Because really, under any other circumstances, why would they follow him when he's some guy who's younger than the rest of them (time as a Capsicle aside), who goes around wearing that spangly outfit, who's not even used to the modern world? Why Steve Rogers, rather than a Norse god or the CEO of Stark Industries or anyone else?
“Love is for children,” she'd said, but respect knew no such bounds. The five times the Avengers accepted Steve as their leader, and the one time they followed without question.
and if there's life we'll see it
Steve is instantly taken with this idea of having the picture of the person calling you flash on your screen when they ring your cell.
Secure Your Own Oxygen Mask (Before Assisting Others)
Steve keeps going, because they need him. Being Captain America - having the serum - is a responsibility and a privilege he takes seriously, and he won't waste it by sitting around resting in the middle of a crisis. But then the work is over, and the original victims of the crisis aren't the only ones needing looking after.
Way of the Eagle
Clint introduces Steve to kung-fu movies. Things escalate quickly.
Walking Wounded
In the aftermath of the battle against the Chitauri, Steve's doing just fine. Until he's not. Fortunately, Thor is a perfect mother-hen, Tony makes decent back-up, JARVIS is a genius, and Soap Operas are life-changing. (Or, Post-Shawarma Feels.)
Feedback gives me life and motivation for future things. ♥
Y/N never believed that she’d ever be able to run as fast as she had. Her heart pounded in her chest as she raced against time to get across the property in time. The sound of her boots hitting the ground had been lost to the sounds of gunfire that surrounded her.
She and the rest of the Avengers were dealing with the remnants of a hydra base. What was supposed to be a quick in and out mission seemed to take a turn. There was more manpower than they expected and it was taking longer just to clear the property.
At some point during the fight, she’d lost her earpiece making it difficult to keep in contact with the others. The others knew she could handle herself, even though they were currently trying to find her among the mess that was being created. She had been expecting to meet at the rendezvous spot with a smirk on her face with all the files she needed in her hand.
At least that had been the plan. But after her eyes had scanned one of the files, she dropped the file and began running out of the building. Hydra had a new plan alright. And it was that plan alone that had caused fear to course through her, wanting-more like needing-to be on the opposite side of the property.
“Anyone have eyes on Y/N yet?” Bucky called out as he took down another member of Hydra.
Bucky hated that Y/N currently couldn’t be reached. While he had trained with her plenty of times and knew that she was able to take care of herself, he didn’t know where she was at. He didn’t know if she was injured or having any issues. His girlfriend could easily wipe the floor with him, but as close as they were, he was worried.
She’s not in the west wing anymore. Bucky heard Natasha’s voice over the comms. She left a nice trail in the process for us though.
Natasha was trying to make light of the situation. If she could get Bucky to bring down his worry in the slightest, she was going to attempt it. Together the two were practically unstoppable, separate them and make it so they can’t speak to each other and they’ve got an anxious super-soldier.
I’ve got eyes on her. Clint’s voice came over next. And unless there’s something I’m missing, Y/N is either running from something invisible or she’s trying to get somewhere.
Anything from the west wing she could have seen? Tony’s voice filled their ears.
Still looking. Nat responded.
“Where is she headed?” Bucky asked a moment later, the swift movement of his knife piercing the body of another person advancing on him. With him down, Bucky had cleared his section. His concern now focused on why Y/N had been running away or towards something.
I’ve lost sight of her. She was headed towards the east. More than likely heading your way.
The plans had been replaying in Y/N’s head from the moment she read them in the west wing. The words on the pages she had found made her heart race in a way that all the training she had been through never made it race. The fear had threatened to bring tears to her eyes. All she knew was that she had to get to Bucky.
She hadn’t stopped for a moment since she had begun running. Even when she was faced with those that tried to stop her, she simply pulled out her dagger, allowing it to make contact for a brief moment before she continued. The bodies she left behind weren’t on her mind for more than a second.
As she made it towards the end of the property, her eyes landed on Bucky. From the looks of things, he had finished clearing things out and was beginning to look for her. She knew he had to be seeing as she no longer had her earpiece. It was something he’d always do no matter what the mission was that they were on.
Y/N believed she had made it there on time. That if he was alone he’d be okay. If there were no signs of Hydra, Bucky would be safe. That getting him out of the area would ensure his safety. It was as she began slowing down did Bucky notice her.
He took off on a light jog to meet her halfway from that point. “What happened?” He asked, seeing the look on her face.
“We need to get out of here, now.” she said in between the breaths of air she was trying to get.
You should listen to her. Nat’s voice picked up in Bucky’s ear. This whole thing was a damn setup.
The moment the words registered in his ear, they both noticed the way a red dot appeared on Bucky’s chest. His first instinct would have been to grab the both of them and find cover. Before he could do anything, Y/N’s instinct kicked in and she pushed Bucky out of the way, just as the shot had been fired.
Both of them had fallen onto the ground but it was Y/N that cried out in pain. Her hands automatically tried to grab at her back to take in the injury she had gotten. To apply some kind of pressure to it or at the very least to see where it was.
Just as Bucky moved to look her over a jolt of electricity shot through her body. One that caused a loud piercing scream to pass her lips before she went silent. Bucky could only watch as her body convulsed from the electrical charge running through her body. The last thing Y/N heard and saw was Bucky reaching for her the moment the shocking stopped his voice calling out to her before she passed out.
The minutes after had gone in a blur to Bucky. The others all speaking at once trying to figure out their location. They all had heard her screams. May it have been through the comms or even the fact that they were close by and could hear it. The words mixed in with the emotions that were currently playing through him.
From the moment she passed out, Bucky had her in his arms. He hardly even remembered yelling at the others to shut up and just get to them. They needed to leave before Y/N bled out or even died there in his arms. He didn’t even want to begin to think about her dying there. Not when that shot wasn’t even meant for her.
He could barely remember how long it had taken him to get to the quinjet, let alone the ride back to the compound. The whole ride back, he never left her side. Even when Bruce helped to stop the bleeding for the trip back, he never once took his eyes off of her. Even after getting her to the Med Bay, he fought to be with her. But he couldn’t be.
There was a storm of emotions brewing within him as he watched from behind a glass window as the team Stark hired had begun working on pulling the bullet out of Y/N’s back. The wound was simple, but because of the electric charge that came from it, her skin looked fried around the wound.
Y/N wasn’t even supposed to be in there. She wasn’t supposed to be wounded and it was because of who he was made to be. That the very organization that he had once freed himself from was desperately trying to get him back. And in the process, the woman he loved was injured.
“She’ll get through this.” Steve said as he came to stand beside Bucky. Steve knew that Y/N had been shot at, broken, and bloodied with several of the missions that she had been through. The woman always seemed to pull through.
“That charge that went through her body, was meant for me.” Bucky said never taking his eyes off of Y/N. “My body would have taken that charge and it would have caused little damage. She’s not like us.”
“She may not be like us, but I’ve seen her take on world threats and she’s come out of them right by your side.” Steve needed Bucky to have some kind of hope.
Bucky’s forehead placed against the glass as he shook his head. “I can’t lose her Steve.”
Steve watched as tears slowly formed in Bucky’s eyes. He wasn’t sure if it was fear or anger that had caused the tears. He brought his hand up and placed it on Bucky’s shoulder. It seemed that the simple action had caused Bucky to let the storm inside of him be released.
He placed his arm around Bucky, allowing his friend to lean on him while he broke down. Steve listened as Bucky mentioned time and time again about it should have been him. That he should have been the one on the table. But if it hadn’t been for Y/N, Bucky would have been taken away.
Steve stayed with Bucky for the time it took to get Y/N closed up and have tests done to make sure the surge of power that went through her hadn’t damaged any of her organs. The testing is what took the longest. The needing to ensure that Y/N would wake up was something that held the heaviest weight.
Y/N’s eyes slowly opened and she found herself in a bed in the Med Bay. A confused look played on her face for a moment before her brain registered the pain her body felt in that moment. She winced as she began to look around before a small smile pulled at her lips.
Bucky had been by her side, his head resting on the space beside her. She could tell he had been sleeping. She could see it in the steady rise and fall of his shoulders as she watched him. Bringing a shaky hand up, she ran it through his hair. The action itself was comforting to herself and if she was being honest, she was sure that it would bring some comfort to him as well.
Her touch had caused Bucky to lift his head quickly. “You’re awake.”
The slight nod of her head had caused her to wince. “How long was I out?” Her voice was rough as she spoke.
“Almost a week.” She could hear the relief in his voice at seeing her awake. He sat up and moved his chair closer before he reached for her hand. “Have I ever mentioned how crazy you are?”
That caused a slight smile to grow on her face, her fingers tightening around his own. “We both know I’m crazy enough to take bullets for the people I love.”
“Doesn’t mean you should.” He said with a slight nod of his head.
“I couldn’t let them take you. Not after everything we’ve done to make sure you got better.” She wasn’t going to let him ‘win’ this argument. “The moment I saw their plans, I didn’t care about anything else. I just knew I had to get to you.”
Bucky sighed as stood up and moved to sit on the bed next to her. His hand came up and ran along her cheek, before bringing his lips to hers for a brief kiss. “I was afraid that you weren’t going to wake up. They kept saying that you were okay, that it would be when you were ready that you would wake up. All I could think about was how there was a whole day where I thought I was going to lose you. And I hated that feeling.”
“If you’re trying to say I shouldn’t go on-” She tried saying before he cut her off.
“No, I would never say that. Not when you know how to take care of yourself. I was just thinking it would be a lot easier and probably safer for the both of us if we stick together as a team.” His words had caused her eyebrow to raise.
“You mean babysit me.” It caused them both to chuckle.
“Is it really babysitting if we enjoy working together?” He asked with a smile pulling at his lips.
She shook her head slightly. “Fine. But even I know it might be a while before I’m out in the field again.”
“About that,” He said as leaned into her a little more. “During your time away from the field, I was thinking about a vacation for the both of us. Lay low while the others cut all the loose ends to ensure there’s no one coming after us.”
“A recovery vacation, while laying low? I’m definitely listening.”
The two of them knew things would never be perfect out there. Not in their line of business. Not with their pasts or even who they’ve become. There would be times where they’d be placed in this same position. They'd be willing to keep the other one safe, no matter the cost.
guardian angel ⸝⸝ oneshot
pairings: sharon carter x winter soldier!reader.
warnings: mentions of blood and injury, attempted brainwashing.
summary: once upon a time you were a winter soldier, but those days are long behind you. at least until someone tries to use your code words to activate that side of you. luckily you seem to have a guardian angel aka sharon carter.
word count: 1312 (can you believe this is the longest oneshot i've ever written?).
// REQUEST: Can I request a Sharon x f!reader where reader was a winter soldier like Bucky with the arm and everything and someone tries to use to words to activate the reader and Sharon is there and she’s just really protective of reader helps her through it 🥺🥺 ༐ A/N: it's probably obvious but this is my first attempt at writing any type of a fight scene, please be gentle.
MASTERLIST
You should have known something was odd the moment your contact had finally called back, should have realised there was something wrong about the whole deal, hell you should have called everything off the moment Madripoor was mentioned.
But you had been so desperate, like a dog begging for scraps, that the mere idea of finally being released from the mental hell Hydra had put you in put you in the sort of situation where ignoring any possible lead, no matter how unreliable and risky it was hadn't even seemed like a viable option.
And look where your desperation had gotten you, crouched in a dirty alley, back pressed against a brick wall, praying to whatever god was wiling to listen that you had successfully escaped the men chasing after you. A quick glance down confirmed what you had feared, your arm – the metal one was fried beyond repair, the damage far worse then anything you would be able to fix all alone, stuck in a stupid alley.
Seeing the state of your arm made the fear in your gut grow, whoever these men were they had come prepared, taking out your main advantage before the fight had fully begun. You arm had been made to withhold nearly anything and were you not in so much pain you would have been impressed that they knew how to break it in such maner, but right now you were annoyed and more then a little frightened.
The serum rushing through your veins did very little in terms of dulling the amount of pain you were currently in and you could feel the initial rush of adrenaline wearing off, forced to bite your tongue to stop yourself from crying out in order to avoid gaining attention or even worse revealing your location to the same men you were so desperately trying to outrun.
It seemed that whatever short period of rest the alley had been able to provide would soon be broken as the sound of approaching footsteps reached your hiding spot. Years of practice made you leap to your feat, your teeth grinding as the sudden movement made another stab of pain run through your injured arm, black spots blurring your vision.
By the time your vision somewhat cleared and you were able to once again focus on your surrondings, there were three of the men rounding the corner, their guns drawn and pointed in your direction. It took you barely a moment to absorb the scene and act accordingly, once again driven by pure instinct as you charged at them, knocking the guns from two of the men and ducking just in time to avoid getting hit by the bullet shot by the third.
The closest man lunged and you barely had time to react, stepping to the side at the last minute and grasping at his hair as he passed, using the man's momentum to throw him aside, his head hitting the brick wall you had been pressed against less then a few minutes ago. The second came at you before you had a chance to even straighten yourself, bending your injured arm with enough force that it made you cry out in agony, a wail that would without doubt drag even more unwanted attention your way.
Trapped, you struggled to move away, desperation kicking in as you blindly hit in his direction, only to receive another blow to you side as his hold on you tightened. "Now, now, that's enough of that soldat.", he reprimanded you, as out of breath as you felt, his voice more dissapointed then angry, similiar to that of an owner trying to control a disobedient puppy and way too smug for your liking.
"What a coincidence, I happen to agree, that is quite enough of that.", a new voice rang out, shrill and sudden, quickly followed by the sound of a gun going off, the man's grip faltering just enough for you to slip out of it. However, the respite didn't last long as he pulled you back by your hair, swiftly turning you around so you stood between him and the new arrival, shielding himself from whoever it was that seemingly came to your aid.
"Now, I was going to wait until we were in a more controlled environment but what can I say? I'm nothing if not flexible.", the man behind you took a shallow breath as if preparing himself, "Желание." No, no, no! "Семнадцать. Ржав-" Bang.
You felt it before you heard it, sharp pain through your middle, unmistakable and far too familiar. Whoever it was that came to your rescue shot the man holding you, straight through you.
No longer held back, you swayed on your feet, closing your eyes as you prepared yourself for the harsh fall. But the action proved to be unnecessary as strong arms wrapped themselves around your waist, pulling you into their side and taking the worst of the impact as your weight took them down with you.
"Sorry about that.", the voice was much closer now, softer then it had been earlier, familiar, your groggy mind added.
Every cell in your body screamed for you to stay down, to rest, that you were safe now but you fought against it, pained moans falling from your lips as you tried to crawl as far away as you could. It was only when you opened your eyes that you stopped, the hood that had been pulled over your savior's head had fallen down sometimes during your struggle and your fuzzy brain was finally able to recognize the person in front of you.
"Sharon?", you croaked out, confusion obvious in your voice, whoever it was you had expected to see, it sure as hell wasn't Sharon Carter. "Hell of a reunion, am I right?", she replied, pulling herself from the ground, her voice teasing but visibly hesitant as she approached you, hands in front of her as a clear sign that she meant no further harm.
The gesture was clearly more for your sake then out of fear, there wasn't much fight left in you, the ease with which she had stood up made it obvious your earlier attempt at getting away from her had only hurt you, it made your lip twitch in an attempt to smile.
She stopped walking a small distance away from you, her gaze questioning, and it was only when you gave her a nod that she moved closer, crouching next to you, swiftly taking off her hoddie, doing her best to tie it around you tight enough to stop the blood flow. "It won't help for long but it should be good enough until I get you to my apartment to patch it up.", she mumbled and you were unsure whether she was saying it for your benefit or hers.
You looked up at her then down to the makeshift bandage which was seeping with more blood, your face paling at the sight. "You sure about that?"
"Yes.", she stood back up, her grip on your shoulders firm but gentle as she pulled you to your feet, quick to position herself in a way that let her support most of your body weight, which was a good thing as you weren't sure you wouldn't have just fallen back to the ground if she didn't.
You were dead on your feet, barely able to keep your eyes fully open by the time you both reached her car, Sharon's talking the only that kept you somewhat awake. You could't quite tell what she was saying but her voice gave you something to focus on which you were extremely grateful for.
It was only about an hour later, after she had both cleaned and dressed the injury, that you finally let yourself fall asleep, healing and most importantly safe. With Sharon right by your side.
So what happens when Sam is returned to you?
Chapter 5: When the Dust Settles
Steve had gotten the call from Bruce late at night. It had come in on his emergency burner phone - the one that only Tony Stark had the number for. You’d seen him answer it with shaking hands, and the different possibilities of why Tony might be calling had all seemed to run through your head simultaneously. Had they overturned the Accords? Had they dropped the charges against all of you? Was he just calling to say sorry or that he missed Steve? Had something bad happened? Was there an attack and the Accords didn’t matter now, because they needed everyone on board? Had something happened to Rhodey?
While one of those was right, the last thing you’d expected to hear was for Steve to say the words; ‘Bruce calm down, I don’t understand what you’re trying to say’.
You’d watched the news on the flight to Scotland to retrieve Vision and Wanda. You’d been told Vision was at risk of attack and your group had arrived not a second too soon. Wanda and Vision were being attacked by two aliens that had to be at least six-foot-six.
Your group had managed to protect them, though Vision had been injured and Steve decided that with this attack, it was time to go home.
Despite what was happening, you couldn’t help but be excited to go back to the compound. Maybe if you could all deal with this, it would show everyone how the Avengers were needed and you could all go home for good. You wondered if Tony had kept your things and if not where they would be. You were excited to just be somewhere familiar even if it was just for a minute.
“Don’t get your hopes up too high,” Sam said, practically reading your mind. “This is bad, babe.”
“I know,” you said with a sigh. “I know but… we don’t lose.”
“Don’t do that!” He yelped. “You’re gonna jinx us.”
“Sorry,” you sighed, shaking your head. “It’s just been so long.”
He rubbed your back. “And everything is a mess. We’ll just do the right thing.”
“Hope for the best, expect the worst,” you said.
“That’s right,” Sam said.
You had stayed at the compound for even less time than you had expected. A greeting from a holographic Secretary Ross that involved an order to have you arrested, an awkward greeting between Bruce and Natasha, and debate about how this whole thing was going to be faced. This ‘whole thing’ being an alien megalomaniac who seemed to have a philosophy degree but thought he was an expert on ecology. He believed that the way to solve overpopulation and limited resources was to destroy half of all life and was now collecting some stones that would allow him to do it. One of the stones currently resided in Vision’s head.
So it was back on the Quinn for a return trip to Wakanda in the hopes that Shuri might be able to remove the stone from Vision’s head so that it could be destroyed before another attack took place.
While Shuri worked on Vision the rest of you prepared for battle. You went to have a quick medical once over before this got started. The nerves you’d been feeling were making you a little lightheaded and you wanted to make sure it wasn’t anything that would get you into trouble during a fight.
“You are a little anemic,” the medic said. “I’d say that is from the slight malnutrition. All of your teammates are a little undernourished. But the pregnancy won’t help.”
You blinked at her and shook your head. “Sorry - the what?”
“You didn’t know you were pregnant?” She asked. “It’s very new? Five weeks? No signs of nausea yet?”
“No… no. I… but… we’re… we use protection!”
“These things can happen, and with the current lifestyle you’re leading, it would be no surprise if you missed a dosage or there was a breakage,” she said. “I’m sorry. If you don’t want this we can talk about what you want to do at a more opportune moment.”
You shook your head, not sure what to think. You laughed… or at least you tried to. It was more of a hysterical sounding screech. “Right. Let’s wait until the world isn’t ending.”
“I’m sorry, this is a lot to take in today, isn’t it?” The medic said, going to a cabinet of medication. She shook a couple of pills out of a bottle and brought them over to you with a small cup of water. “Here, take these. It will help with any lightheadedness and nausea you might experience. We don’t want that in the midst of what’s to come.”
You quickly swallowed the pills and started to redress in your armor. “Thank you, doc,” you said. “Sorry for bringing this fight to your door.”
“If it is as serious as they say and you can’t stop it, then we won’t be protected just because we’re in Wakanda,” she said with a shrug. “Not this time.” She sighed and looked at you. “Take care of yourself. When you’ve saved the world, talk to the father and the two of you can come back to see me, and I’ll help you with the next step, whatever that is.”
“Thank you,” you said sincerely. “That’s really kind.”
You went outside to where Sam, Rhodey, and Bucky were all waiting by the ships. “All good?” Sam asked, looking back at you.
Before you could answer there was a loud rumble in the sky. You looked up to see a huge ship that resembled some kind of tower entering the atmosphere.
Sam pressed his finger to his comms device. “Hey, Cap, we’ve got a situation here.”
It crashed into the dome above and exploded on impact, completely disintegrating in the air above you.
“God, I love this place,” Bucky said, as he looked up at it.
“Yeah, don't start celebrating yet, guys. We got more incoming outside the dome,” Rhodey added as more of the ships landed around the perimeter of the dome that protected Wakanda from the rest of the world.
Sam approached you. “Guess it's the end of the world time,” he said as alarms started sounding and people began to scramble.
You briefly and tenderly kissed him, the secret that you had burning inside you. “Sam,” you said, taking his hand.
He looked at you and raised an eyebrow. “What’s up.”
You wanted to tell him but now was not the time. He needed his head in the game, and so did you. “Don’t do anything dumb.”
He laughed. “You sound like Steve just before he jumps off the side of a building. I’ve got wings, I’ll be fine.”
“See you when the dust settles,” you said.
“Yeah, you too,” he agreed and pecked your cheek. The two of you then ran off in different directions. You gathered with Bucky and Natasha, while he went to speak to Rhodey.
Steve, T’Challa, the Dora Milaje all arrived not long after, and your team and the armies of Wakanda were all marched onto carriers as Bruce messed around with a set of Kimoyo Beads with the help of Okoye. As you were settling onto the carrier, a hole opened in the dome above your head and the Veronica Unit crashed down to earth nearby. Natasha sighed and vaulted off the carrier going to help Bruce get a handle of the Hulk Buster armor.
By the time you were all flying your way down to the borders of Wakanda, you were in the blank zone that you hid in when you needed to rely on your instincts alone.
Sam and Rhodey flew overhead as the carriers took the armies to their positions and you all formed a large wall facing the dome that held the aliens out.
Steve, T’Challa, and Natasha went to the barrier to talk to the two aliens you had fought in Scotland. You watched on, knowing it wasn’t going to amount to anything. The female raised her spear and the ships began to open up.
“Did they surrender?” Bucky asked.
“Not exactly,” Steve replied as he resumed his position.
Hoards of huge beasts ran through the treeline towards the barrier. “Looks like we pissed her off,” Natasha said.
You watched on as swarms of the beasts began attacking the barrier, throwing themselves on it, not caring that it was skinning them and tearing them apart too. “They’re killing themselves,” Okoye said, horrified.
Some began to breach the barrier and charge towards the waiting army. Bucky, Bruce, and the Wakandan Army began attacking them with long-range weapons, felling them as they broke past Rhodey and Sam who attacked them at the wall.
“Cap, if these things circle the perimeter and get in behind us... there's nothing between them and Vision,” Bruce said through the comms.
“Then we better keep 'em in front of us,” Steve said gravely.
“How do we do that?” Okoye asked T’Challa.
“We open the barrier,” T’Challa said, and touched his comms device. “On my signal, open North-West Section Seventeen. On my signal.”
“This will be the end of Wakanda,” M’Baku said to Okoye.
“Then it will be the noblest ending in history,” Okoye said.
Everyone readied themselves while T’Challa shouted his commands in Xhosa to the army around him. The border tribesmen let down their shields and T’Challa walked out in front of them. “Wakanda forever!” He shouted and everyone charged.
As you ran down towards the border, pulling out your batons and hoping to god that you had the strength to get through this battle, the barrier opened and the beasts flooded through.
You were back from the frontlines when you encountered your first one, and you battled it, back to back with one of the river tribesman, the two of you taking it down together. Two more attacked immediately, separating you from the man and you did your best to take the one you were facing down. You could already see that this was not going to go as planned. There were so many of them and they were so strong. You managed to take down two others when you saw Bruce getting overwhelmed in the hulkbuster armor. It felt hopeless, but you needed to win this. You needed to go home with Sam and start your life together. This couldn’t be how it ended.
There was a large crack and then something flew through the sky, taking out dozens of the beasts in one go, freeing up both yourself and several of your teammates. When the air cleared what you realized was a large ax flew into the hand of Thor, who stood with what appeared to be a humanoid tree and a raccoon holding a gun that was at least as big as it was.
Bruce retracted his helmet and laughed loudly. “Ah-hahaha! You guys are so screwed now!”
“Bring me Thanos!” Thor roared, charging towards the leaders of the beasts. He jumped into the air and slammed back down to the ground, his lightning taking out a huge swarm of them.
Thor turned the tide of the battle. The hoard was being kept back and Thor seemed to be getting closer and closer to their leader. The hopefulness began to return and you got a new surge of energy. You were going to win this. You and Sam were going to go home and retire. He was going to run his business with his sister.
There was a deep rumble and the earth itself began to quake. A huge wave ran out underground, sending trees flying and bursting out from under the walls of the dome were huge weaponized wheels that began to churn up everything, people included.
“Fall back! Fall back now!” T’Challa yelled and you began to run back away from the combat, trying to get away from the machines.
Wanda flew out from the window and threw one of them, taking it completely out of play. Your relief at the next of your biggest hitters joining the field was short-lived as you saw Vision tumble out of the window of the palace and down the face of Mount Bashenga.
“Guys, we got a Vision situation here,” Sam said through the comms.
“Somebody get to Vision!” Steve shouted.
“I got him,” Bruce said, taking off in the direction of the synthoid.
“On my way,” Wanda echoed.
You kept fighting. Everything became more and more chaotic around you, and your battle turned away from actually trying to stop them, to just trying to survive long enough that you could get to the end of the battle. The rest of your teammates seemed to head toward a copse of trees while you were still stuck in the open. You wanted to be with them if this all went south. You didn’t want to die in a field surrounded by strangers, but with each step forward you made you were pushed back two more by the invaders.
Thor had begun to destroy the alien ships, bolstering your hope again despite the fact your energy was waning. You could hear the battle cries of the Jabari as they began to take control of the battle and slowly you began to start gaining on the treeline.
An eerie silence fell on the battlefield and you picked up your speed running to where your friends were.
“Everyone, on my position. We have incoming,” Steve said over comms. You looked around for some sign of more ships or something, but you had no idea what he was talking about.
You arrived in time to see Sam being hurled aside by a huge purple man that you could only assume was Thanos. You charged at the titan, knowing it was no use, but knowing also that it was death either way. He batted you aside like you were nothing, you hit your head, and lost consciousness.
When you came too, you thought for a second you were hallucinating. There were people on the battlefield turning to dust. You scrambled to your feet and looked around, blinking your eyes. This couldn’t be happening. People couldn’t just be disintegrating.
“Sam?!” You called turning around and running in the direction where you last saw him.
Rhodey was looking around with the same look of confusion everyone else seemed to share. “Sam?” He called as he gazed around the forest floor.
“Sam!” You screamed. “Sam! Answer me!”
“We’ll find him,” Rhodey assured you. “He’s gotta be here.”
“He was right here. I saw him here,” you said, and dropped to your knees, running your hands over the ground where you were sure he’d been. Your hands came back covered in the dust you’d seen other people disintegrating into. It was him. You’d lost him. You had expected the worst but even your worst hadn’t been you left here alone. You sunk back on your knees and wailed.
Bucky made a quick call to Shuri who, after a thorough interrogation as to why he was asking, assured him his arm would not be affected by the magnets of an MRI machine. So now, Bucky was laying down on his back inside the machine and staring at the small glass covered camera embedded in the inside curve of the plastic above him.
“Stop staring at the camera, Barnes, you’re giving off some crazy resting murder face right now,” Tony’s staticky voice came through the pair of disposable earbuds he was wearing to protect his hearing from the noise of the scan. “Might sell these scans to Ripley’s Believe It or Not. You actually do have something going on in that head of yours.”
“As much as I know you want to answer, Sergeant Barnes, please do not speak or move,” Dr. Austin’s voice came through after what sounded like a small scuffle for the microphone.
Bucky blinked several times in an unnatural yet controlled fashion, and when he heard Steve’s laughter coming through the earbuds, he had to fight the urge to smile, knowing Steve got the message he blinked out in Morse code.
F-U-C-K Y-O-U T-O-N-Y
The scan was over almost a half an hour later, and Bucky couldn’t hide his exhale of relief once the table began to slide out of the massive scanner. Confined spaces still made his skin crawl and flash back to the cryo tube he was kept in, but the MRI was surprisingly open in design and not like the ones he usually remembered seeing in hospitals. When he brought it up to Dr. Austin on their way back to her office, she smiled at him and explained most of the soldiers they treat have PTSD and claustrophobia, so an open MRI design was necessary for the comfort of the patients she treats.
It made sense, and when they entered her office and Bucky’s stomach growled for the fourth time in the last fifteen minutes, she tossed him the orange he’d been eyeing earlier before taking a seat at her desk and flipping open her laptop.
“Normally we have to wait for the images to be reviewed by a radiologist, but I’m well versed in how to read brain scans,” Dr. Austin explained, clicking a few times before leaning forward to study the screen. “Oh, wow.”
“What?” Bucky asked, using his teeth to bite a chunk of the orange’s peel off since his right hand didn't have nails long enough, and his left didn’t have nails at all. Once he could see the flesh of the orange underneath, he slid his flesh finger under the remaining peel and began to remove it in large pieces, trying to avoid getting sticky juice on his metal hand.
Dr. Austin spun her laptop around to show Bucky the image on her screen. It was a scan of his head, he could tell that, but the mess of swirling bright colors on the inside where his brain was made his eyes hurt. There were bright greens and blues swirled with more vibrant reds and pinks dancing around inside the image. “This is your brain.”
“Looks more like those posters… the ‘this is your brain on drugs’ pictures if they were made in the sixties, Doc,” Tony said. “I’m guessing it’s not supposed to look like that?”
“No. There’s so much brain activity that it’s likely what’s been burning through your energy and why you’ve been hungry all the time,” Dr. Austin explained. “Any type of brain activity, including emotions and problem solving, requires energy, whether it’s planning a complex strategy of attack for a mission or a simple math problem or crying at a sad part in a movie. Overworking the mind usually leads to tiredness, which leads to sleep, naturally refreshing those energy reserves. Most humans don’t expend enough energy, even when the brain is very active, to require major replenishment. Take Mr. Stark for example.”
Tony looked up and raised his eyebrows. “Me?”
“Yes, you’re a very intelligent man, and I’m guessing that when you’re elbow deep in your inventions or developing something, you don’t sleep and will go days without rest… so you find you get somewhat hungry at random times, right?” Dr. Austin asked.
“Well, yeah, I usually keep snacks around the lab that I nibble on so I don’t have to leave to make an actual meal. It ruins the momentum,” Tony said, confusion in his voice. “Pep’s found me passed out over the kitchen counter halfway through making a sandwich.
“Your body shut down and went to sleep before you were even able to replenish that energy via food since sleep is more efficient. So, that is a normal human mind.” Tony opened his mouth to protest, when Dr. Austin rolled her eyes and switched analogies. “Fine, that’s a standard engine, if you will, that can easily be refueled by a small energy source for a limited amount of time before it needs to be shut down and rebooted,” Dr. Austin said, slowly twirling her right pointer finger in a circle.
“Alright, I’m following you so far.” Tony’s head was slightly moving along with the circular rotation of her finger.
“Now, in the case of our super soldiers here, imagine that engine, but amplified almost five hundred percent,” Dr. Austin began to rotate her finger faster and faster until it was a blur of movement. “The need for sleep is suppressed by the serum, since alertness is crucial in combat, so that reboot requirement is easier to put off. In order to keep this kind of engine going at the same speed and level of activity for prolonged periods, it would burn through a small snack, or a small source of energy, too quickly and would signal the driver of the car, if you will, that it needed more.”
“So you’re saying that something is making Bucky’s brain so active, and he’s burning through so much energy, that it’s manifesting as hunger to make sure he keeps up with what’s being expended?” Steve asked, his mouth slightly open in shock. “I mean, I always remember being hungry after mission strategy and planning meetings, but I just assumed it was because I was bored or had skipped a meal.”
Dr. Austin shook her head. “Nope. You were using your brain in overdrive, doing quick calculations and mission scenarios in your head to find the best possible plan of action, much faster than any normal human brain would be able to calculate. It makes you an excellent strategist, but that kind of brain power burns a lot of energy.”
Bucky snorted in disbelief and leaned forward in the chair, resting his elbows on his knees. “It makes sense. I was a good sniper when I was first in the Army during the war, but after Zola… after he injected me with that bastardized version of the serum… I could calculate trajectory angles and wind velocities and distances in my head in seconds, didn’t have to write them out to do the calculations. Didn’t even need a spotter anymore.”
Dr. Austin nodded. “Exactly. The serum allowed you extra mental acuity at the expense of more energy consumption.”
“But that doesn’t explain why Bucky’s brain is lit up like a psychedelic Christmas tree,” Tony said, gesturing to the laptop image. “Barnes obviously isn’t doing any kind of advanced calculus in his head right now.” Tony looked at Bucky. “You’re not right?” Bucky shook his head and Tony continued, “so why is his brain so active?”
“And that leads me to my theory about Y/N,” Dr. Austin said, standing up from her chair. “Follow me, gentlemen. And Sergeant Barnes,” he looked over and raised a brow as he trailed after her into the hallway, “please let me know if you feel any increased feelings of hunger or exhaustion. The effects might come on quickly, so please let me know if, or when, you feel anything.”
Bucky nodded, and looked over to where Steve was walking to his right. Thanks to their childhood friendship, Steve could always see anxiety and nervousness in Bucky even when he tried to hide it, like when he saw Bucky off the morning he shipped off to Europe. Bucky kept his face stoic, but when Steve hugged him goodbye, Bucky was practically trembling under the Army-hardened mask he had worn then.
Steve reached over and clasped a comforting hand on Bucky’s shoulder, giving him a squeeze of reassurance.
The doctor led them down several hallways, until they reached another wing of the military hospital which held secure patient rooms that could be locked down if necessary, whether due to outbursts of violence due to psychological issues from recovering soldiers or to hold prisoners who had been injured and needed medical intervention. Dr. Austin stopped in front of a room at the end of the hallway and gestured to the one-way mirror in front of her.
“Gentlemen, meet Y/N Y/L/N.”
The three men stepped closer and looked into the room, all eyes frozen on the figure sitting upright in the hospital bed. Y/N had shoved herself in the farthest possible corner of the bed, her knees tucked under her chin and arms wrapped around her legs. The photo in her file, and even the video of her they’d seen looked nothing like the woman before them. She looked almost emaciated, her skin a sickly pale that was almost translucent, and her stringy grease matted hair twitched slightly as her body trembled.
“Jesus,” Steve breathed. “She… she looks like those prisoners… the ones—”
Bucky swallowed and nodded. “From Natzweiler, yeah, I remember.” Bucky took a deep breath, fighting against the telltale tingle in his mind of a long since forgotten memory beginning to rise up like a wave. “Doc… is she eating?”
“She was when she first got here, but only if the food was left for her after she passed out from exhaustion,” Dr. Austin explained. “Now, ever since things have escalated, she rips out her IV’s, pulls out NG tubes, and refuses any food we bring her. I’m not going to sedate her just because it’ll make it easier to feed her, we haven’t reached that level of intervention yet, but we’re getting close. She told one of our staff yesterday, in Russian, that she was not going to eat any of our poisoned food, that she wasn’t some kind of lab experiment and that we were animals for not just shooting her in the head to get it over with.”
All of the air in Bucky’s lungs came out in one hard breath like he’d been punched in the chest, and he had to brace himself against the windowsill to keep his knees from buckling. “Fuck.”
“Bucky?” Steve gasped at Bucky’s sudden weakness, grabbing onto his friend’s arm and placing a gentle hand on his back. ”What? Are you feeling the stuff Dr. Austin mentioned?”
Bucky grit his teeth and closed his eyes at the onslaught of memory fragments bombarding him. “No, I’m… I don’t know, maybe? I just… she’s…” Bucky’s thoughts were so jumbled he could barely form a coherent sentence, even in his head. He made a choked off noise that sounded more like a sob before he lifted his head to look at Y/N. “She’s reliving my captivity with Hydra. This… this was after I was transferred from the facility the Russians held me in after they found me to the one where Zola did his experiments. They were, umm, they were testing the limits of the serum, trying to figure out what I could survive.”
Steve’s face dropped and he took a sharp breath in. Bucky’s captivity and torture was not something he talked about often outside his therapy sessions. Steve only knew a handful of stories, ones that had come directly from Bucky’s mouth, and even then they were very hard stories for him to tell—lots of starting and stopping, frequent breaks, and plenty of tears. But here, with two extra people with him, and one being a stranger?
“Buck, you don’t have to talk about it,” Steve whispered.
“No, I need… she said exactly what I said to the guards who brought me food one day.” Bucky swallowed hard, flexing his fingers against the painted metal of the windowsill, the cold against his flesh hand grounding him. “They were testing different poisons and how the serum would fight it off… arsenic, ricin, even different kinds of snake and spider venom. I had seizures, strokes, and my heart stopped so many times I lost count.”
“Fucking hell,” Tony murmured, leaning against the wall behind them, his face a few shades paler than it was ten minutes ago. “Y/N is reliving your memories, reliving your life.”
“We need to find a way to pull her out of this,” Bucky said, straightening up with determination even though his bones felt like liquid and his mind was full of numbing static. If Y/N was reliving his life, even if it didn’t seem like the moments were in order, he knew it was only a matter of time until she would experience how the Winter Soldier was born, how he was forged, and he wouldn’t wish that on anyone.
Dr. Austin nodded and looked back at her patient through the glass. “If my theory is correct, which I believe it is based on your shared memories and brain scans, Y/N’s mind has somehow melded with yours. And your memories, powered by your mind’s energy, have somehow taken over hers, suppressing her personality completely. I don’t know if it was some kind of dormant mutant ability that was activated by the trauma of her captivity and torture, or something else… but there is obviously some kind of link between the two of you that we don’t have the technology to test for and verify. You’re essentially feeding her your memories, which is why your brain is lit up like that and why you’re expending so much energy.”
“It’s like she’s stuck inside one of Stark’s virtual reality headsets and can’t take it off, experiencing everything I went through while my brain keeps playing her different…” Bucky trailed off and his eyes widened before his head snapped to look at Y/N through the glass.
In a flash of movement, Bucky grabbed Dr. Austin’s ID badge from where it was clipped onto her white coat and darted for the door to Y/N’s room, scanning the badge so the door opened with a green light and soft click. Bucky, ignoring the shouts of his name and hands trying to grab at him to pull him back, opened the door and shut it firmly behind him, engaging the door’s auto-lock safety feature that he knows secure wings of hospitals have. The group outside would need to find another ID badge to get in, which would buy him some time.
Y/N’s wide and terrified eyes settled on him, and she tilted her head in an almost confused dog-like fashion, her eyes softening with an air of familiarity. Bucky could feel the hunger gnawing at his stomach turn into sharp cramps that almost made him double over, and there was a soft circle of darkness starting to creep in around his vision.
Bucky took three large steps forward, and even though she flinched away at his sudden movement, Y/N didn’t scramble away to try and avoid his hands as he lifted them. Her weary bloodshot eyes were full of unshed tears, and the closer Bucky’s hands got to her face, the more she began to tremble.
“You’re safe,” he whispered to her in Russian, before repeating the same sentiment in English.
The moment his fingers, both flesh and metal, touched the skin on either side of her face, it felt like he was on the wrong side of an attack from Thor’s hammer. Whatever weakness and hunger he’d been feeling was burned out of his body at the sheer shock cascading through his entire being. It didn’t hurt, but it was bordering on wildly uncomfortable, and Bucky was afraid he’d never be able to let go, his hands stuck to Y/N like a magnet.
There was something different passing between them, more than what touch alone could provide. Trying to understand everything that was happening was overwhelming, but when Bucky focused, he could almost feel Y/N inside his mind, like another whisper of a presence, a ghost in his consciousness. When he reached out in his head for her where he’d felt the ghost of her presence, he was assaulted with bursts of memories he knew were not his own, images of unfamiliar people, places, and things flashing in his mind like photographs. Bucky's curiosity was almost childlike, awestruck and trying to understand what his brain was comprehending, sorting through what Y/N was showing him.
The more information Bucky absorbed, the darker each memory became until it felt like he was wading through molasses, each image being harder and harder to move past. A hoarse whisper of “No” echoed in his mind, and Bucky couldn’t tell if it was his own voice or Y/N’s.
A solid arm wrapped around Bucky’s middle, one much more firm than human flesh would be, and pulled him backward until his hands dropped from Y/N’s face, breaking whatever connection had refused to release him when he’d touched her. Reality came rushing back, and the room and people around him flashed into existence, the change in environment and sound disorienting him and leaving him panting for breath, his knees wobbling.
“She…” Bucky looked over at Y/N, who was just as distressed, and watched her collapse onto the bed, unconscious, before his vision blacked out and darkness took him as well.
Prompt: 5 times Bucky carried Sam and 1 time Sam carried Bucky. It can be sweet like Sam fell asleep somewhere awkward or angsty like Sam is horribly injured or naughty like Bucky is impatient and just carries Sam to the nearest flat surface. I just love to read about Bucky carrying Sam so please whenever you can.
hey anon!! thank u so many for the prompt, i too am a sucker for bucky carrying sam. heres what i came up with, i hope you like it!
Bucky had carried Sam five times and Sam had only carried him once. Yes, Bucky had been keeping track. Not every time was pretty, but they all held a special place in Bucky’s heart. At this point, they were having a competition, but only because Bucky had brought it up. He could recall each time like the back of his hand, excited for every chance he got to carry Sam around. Sam just liked to make competition out of everything, especially with Bucky and especially with small things like this.
The first time Bucky had to carry Sam was before they were dating, in fact the first two happened before they were together. On the first mission they were on as a team, Sam got himself hurt pretty bad. He was forced into a one on one with a super soldier and no wings to help out. Admittedly, his hand to hand combat skills weren’t where he wanted them to be, and the guy he was fighting was pretty brutal. Before Bucky could get to him, the soldier in question got a good hit to his head and made him unconscious. Bucky had walked into the man standing over Sam and saw red. He wasn’t sure what exactly happened, he just knew that the fight had ended with the super soldier in a wall and Sam in his arms. He carried Sam bridal style out of the building and to a safe place where he had woken up, pushing himself out of Bucky’s arms and yelling at him for not getting there in time. Bucky had thought about this time a lot before they got together.
The second time was actually what got them talking to each other about what was really going on between them. Sam had fallen asleep at the dinner table after being away for a few days on a mission. Of course, Bucky wasn’t going to let it slide and definitely wasn’t going to wake him just to send him to bed. He took it upon himself to pick Sam up like a little kid, letting his head rest on his shoulder and carrying him to his bed. Initially, he didn’t wake up. Only when he got to bed did he realize that Bucky very gently had taken him to his room. Bucky remembered the look on Sam’s face as he groggily asked him why he did that and continued to interrogate him half asleep until Bucky admitted his feelings. It was uncomfortable, but surprisingly easy. That night ended with Sam sleeping safely in his bed and Bucky staying up freaking out about whether or not he would remember the conversation the next morning. He did, and that day they got together officially.
The third time was interesting to say the least. In passing, someone had made a negative comment about Bucky and Sam was not having it that day. If Bucky had any less patience, it would have been Sam having to carry him off. Going on 30 minutes of debate on his character, Sam was showing no sign of stopping and Bucky just really wanted to go home. He felt the only logical thing was to pick Sam up by the waist and drag him off, so he did. Sam was still shouting in between yelling at him to put him down, which he did not until they were back at their place. Finally, Bucky set him on the ground and Sam glared at him, telling him how much he hated him. Bucky only smiled and unlocked the door, knowing full well he didn’t actually mean what he said.
The fourth time was the same situation as the second, they just ended up in the same bed. This last time, however, was on Bucky’s mind a lot. During a movie night on the couch, they got into a pretty intense make out session. A quarter into the movie, they already had each other's shirts off, getting handsy with one another. One of Sam’s hands had found its way down the front of Bucky’s jeans and that was when Bucky couldn’t take it any longer. He shut off the TV without so much as looking, scooping the other man up by his thighs and lower back. Sam was surprised at how smoothly he had done this, but wrapped his arms and legs around him as Bucky took them to their now shared room, closing the door and practically slamming him against it. Surely, you know where this ended up.
Now, what about the one time Sam had carried Bucky, you might be asking yourself? Well, that time wasn’t anything special other than it being the only time Sam had picked him up. It was on a dare, Bucky brought up how many times he had to carry the other and mentioned how easy it was for him. This ignited the competitive side of Sam, which led to Bucky daring him to try to pick him up. Sam grabbed him by the knees and scooped him up, not without a little bit of struggle. Bucky was surprised and teased him about the struggle. He wrapped his arms around Sam’s shoulders as he carried him around proudly in their room. They ended up crashing onto the bed, laughing with each other. They both cherished this moment over how happy they made one another. They ended up kissing, which led to making out, which led right back to where the last time Bucky picked up Sam led to.
And there you have it, the ratio of Sam and Bucky picking each other up. Sam is determined to even it out, but Bucky isn’t going to let him get the chance. They are definitely a competitive couple to say the least.
#this is the first one of like 5#im working on them while i get time#which is never bc u know. two jobs#sambucky#should i just tag this as sambucky? i have no clue#sam x bucky#sambucky fanfiction
Only the Good Die Young (Part 6)
Summary: It seemed like everyone in that godforsaken town was out to test your relationship
Pairing: Biker!Bucky x y/n
Word Count: 2k
Warnings: Language, anti-religious sentiment, harmful relationship with parents, creepy threatening behaviour
Author's Note: Temptation. I feel like I’ve put these two through so much but I just. cannot. stop. Eventually I may need medical intervention.
---
You just stood there for a little while. Eyes closed, head resting against his chest, savouring the contentment and safety you felt in his arms. These moments of peace were few and far between for the two of you, so when they came along you held on to them for as long as you could.
Your serenity faded after a few minutes, as you found yourself struggling to prevent his mother’s words bleeding into the front of your mind.
You wanted to look after him, you wanted to heal and care for him the best you could, but you knew there was nothing you could do to make up for his past. You couldn’t fix it.
But at least now, you were able to realise that everything he’d ever achieved, he’d done completely by himself.
All his life he’d had no help, no support and no real reason to outgrow the life that people like your mother expected him to lead. At the very least, you were determined to change that.
After a while, he piped up. ‘You hungry? I thought we could order food, there’s a really good-’
You cut him off by throwing your arms around his neck and pressing your lips against his, apparently shocking him a little, because it took him a few seconds to respond. He eventually tightened his hold around you and tilted his head to the side, deepening the kiss while you moved your hands to cradle his face. Eventually, he pulled away.
‘-pizza place nearby.’
You laughed at his stupid grin, nodded and reached over to the drawer with the takeout menus.
The two of you ate in front of the TV, then curled up together on the sofa for the evening. You were still holding onto this moment of peace, savouring every second, knowing how fleeting it could be.
---
As predicted, you only managed about an hour of relaxation before Bucky’s phone started buzzing. He picked it up and moved over to the kitchen when he saw that it was his mother calling.
You tried not to eavesdrop, but it wasn’t a big flat.
He didn’t say much, he was mainly listening to her, but as the conversation progressed you could tell he was getting more and more agitated. The only thing you could really gauge was that, at one point, she asked him for money. He told her he was pretty broke at the moment, so he didn’t have any to spare, but you had no idea if that was the truth.
It was heart-breaking to see the toxic side of their relationship in practice, especially after seeing all the love that his mother was capable of.
Finally, he said a short goodbye and trudged back to the couch. You waited for a second to see if he’d share willingly, but he just huffed, heaved his boots up onto the table and necked the rest of his beer. You were going to have to do this the hard way.
‘Is everything alright?’
‘Yeah, fine.’ He gave you a short, tight smile and reached for the remote. You caught his arm.
‘Buck.’
‘It’s nothing, just...’ He gave an aggravated sigh and rubbed his eyes. ‘She’s not pressing charges.’
‘That’s not nothing. That’s a pretty valid reason to be upset.’
You were still very much testing the waters as far as talking Bucky down was concerned. You were sure that he’d calm down himself given enough time, but if you were going to move in here properly you’d prefer not to have walls full of holes.
He took a deep breath. ‘It’s not like I expected anything else, this is what always happens.’
‘Doesn’t mean it sucks any less.’ You shifted closer and interlaced your fingers with his, rubbing his forearm with your other hand, feeling some of the tension in his muscles settle under your touch. You were pretty pleased with that result, even if it was only small. ‘Y’know, for a guy who was so eager to find someone to talk to, you’re really not easy to get information out of.’
He let a reluctant smile spread across his face. ‘Good job you’re a ruthless interrogator then.’
---
The next few days were almost perfect. You were able to spend quality time together and unwind a little, just about managing to ignore the sixty-four missed calls from your parents and the texts begging for money from his. Bucky went out to work whenever repair jobs came up, but you quite enjoyed having free-reign of the flat while he was gone, making subtle changes that he barely noticed when he got back.
The decoration wasn’t bad per se, it just didn’t really… exist. It was your typical bare bones bachelor pad, you were convinced he hadn’t made any real changes since moving in- apart from a pile of magazines and a couple of suspicious stains on the carpet.
When your parents finally gave up, and when enough time had passed since the visit from Bucky’s mother, it felt for the first time like maybe everything could turn out alright. All the problems you’d faced seemed to be receding further and further, it seemed like they couldn’t penetrate the walls of this cosy little life you’d built.
So it was all the more disappointing when that turned out not to be the case.
---
You woke up to the sound of Bucky’s alarm. Stretching a little, you felt his body pressed up against the back of yours and his arms wrapped you. He reached over you to shut the sound off, groaned dramatically and buried his face in the crook of your neck.
‘Another morning I'll have trouble climbing out of bed.’
His words were muffled against your skin. You rolled onto your back and brushed a few strands of hair away from his forehead, smiling at the deep marks left on his cheek by the creases in the sheets. The two of you must’ve slept like logs, barely moving all night.
‘Stay then.’
‘I’ve got places to go.’ He placed a few soft kisses below your ear. ‘There’s a big job today, could be a few hundred bucks.’
You frowned and abruptly grabbed his head, lifting it away from you. ‘Hundreds? Christ, get out then.’
‘Wow, didn’t have you down as a gold digger.’ You laughed and tried to push him out of bed, relenting when he clawed his way back to you.
‘You could use some restraint, Barnes.’
‘I never said I was a saint.’
Ten or fifteen minutes later, Bucky finally got up and ready for work. You had a day of solid lounging around planned. Maybe you’d take a walk into town later, but only during the hours you knew your parents would be working. No way would you risk bumping into them.
---
He’d been gone for a few hours when the doorbell went. You couldn’t figure out who it was from the window, so you tiptoed downstairs and cautiously inched the door open. It was the blonde from the bar, the one who got Bucky thrown in jail.
‘What the hell do you want?’ The severity in your voice shocked you a little.
He gave a smug chuckle. ‘Calm down, suburbs. I wanna talk to Bucky.’
‘About what?’
He narrowed his eyes at you and stepped forward, stretching his arms out and bracing himself against the door frame. You instinctively moved back, tightening your grip on the open door, ready to slam it shut at a moment's notice.
‘I’d rather just speak to him, sweetheart.’
‘Look, he’s not here, but even if he was I’m sure he’d just tell you to fuck off.’
A sinister, calculating look spread over his face. ‘You’re here all on your own?’
The shift in his tone made your entire body tense up. You immediately defaulted into fight or flight mode, pushing the door closed as quickly as you could. Somehow he moved faster, shoving his foot into the gap and letting out an irritated grunt when the door slammed into it. You felt him pushing against the other side of the wood.
‘C’mon.’ You saw his fingers emerge through the gap and curl round the edge of the door. ‘I just wanna talk.’
Summoning strength from god-knows-where, you stomped down on his foot with all your weight. When it jerked out of the gap, you shoved your shoulder hard against the door, hearing the cracking of his fingers followed by loud yelp. He pulled his hand away and you swiftly turned the lock.
He was still shouting and banging on the door as you scrambled upstairs, your shaky knees finally causing you to collapse as you burst back into the flat. You crawled over to the window and peeked out, seeing him limping away down the street, cradling his injured hand against his chest. You breathed out for what felt like the first time in ten minutes, remnants of your adrenaline rush making your head spin.
Despite your overwhelming panic, you couldn’t help but feel a little pleased with yourself, cause damn that was pretty fucking badass.
You considered calling Bucky, but figured that as long as you didn’t answer the door again, you should be alright until he finishes. It’d be much easier to explain what’d happened after you’d had some time to think about it and to calm down a bit.
You made some tea and collapsed onto the couch, all the while making an effort to maintain deep, controlled breaths. Thankfully, it wasn’t too long before you managed to compose yourself.
When Bucky got back, you sat him down and reeled it all off, reassuring him throughout that you were fine. He seemed to take it surprisingly well, staying silent and still while you were explaining. You thought maybe he’d finally turned a corner with his anger.
That was, until you got to the end of your story.
‘He didn’t come back, right?’ You shook your head. He nodded to himself and clenched his hands together tight, dropping his head and taking a deep, shaky breath. ‘Fuckin asshole, man.’
You could see him ramping up to something, so you tried your best to diffuse. ‘It’s fine, I’m fine. I handled it.’
‘Nah.’ Bucky stood up suddenly and grabbed his jacket, storming towards the door. ‘He could’a hurt you.’
‘He didn’t.’ You followed him, managing to grab his arm before he made it out of the flat.
‘That’s not the point.’
You knew there was no fucking way were you going to stand back and let him do this again. His judgement was being clouded by anger, that much was obvious, so he needed a sharp reality check to ground him again.
‘Do you really think this is worth going back to jail for?’ He stopped tugging against you, turning his head slightly so you were in the corner of his vision. ‘Cause I guarantee I won’t be here when you get out.’
He was still for a second. You let go and took a couple steps back, waiting to see what he would do.
If he left, this was over.
He threw his jacket to the ground in frustration and ran his fingers through his hair, turning back towards you with a regretful grimace. You breathed a pretty big sigh of relief.
‘You’re right.’ He held his arms out in defeat. ‘Y’know, I try to be rational, but it all gets blown to pieces when I look at you.’
What a strange mix of accusation and romance.
‘If you don’t chill the fuck out soon you’ll only be looking at me through bulletproof glass.’
He rubbed his forehead exasperatedly. ‘God, I wish everyone would just leave us alone.’
You didn’t respond for a second, considering whether or not to tell him what you were thinking. It was something you’d been debating for a while, something you were going to bring up with him when it got closer to the end of summer.
Fuck it, now was as good a time as any.
‘We need to get out of this town. There’s nothing here for us Buck.’
He squinted at you in slight confusion. ‘You wanna move?’
‘Look I know it’s not been long, and I know there's a danger in wanting too much too soon, but I really think we could be happy somewhere else. Your parents, my parents, your weird creepy friends. We need to get away.’
He looked away, considering your proposal. You just shifted on the spot awkwardly for what felt like hours. Eventually he smiled, then grinned, and soon enough he was beaming at you.
‘Alright. Let’s get outta here.’
‘Yeah?’ Your head was spinning with possibility and optimism. ‘Where should we go?’
‘Wherever you want darlin.’
Letters Home
Part II of my new Home series
Part I here
Inspired by Welcome Home from Bandstand the musical
“Letters every day, sent to reassure, knowing all the dangers with the duties of the tour”
*****************************************************************************************************
Bucky Barnes x Reader, Steve Rogers (brother) x Reader
*****************************************************************************************************
One year. Bucky had been gone for one year overseas. In your heart, it felt like much longer than a year. You were desperate for his touch, for his voice, but you would settle of his words, for his beautiful handwriting. He kept his promise, writing you a letter every day. The first month after he shipped out was the hardest. The letters were scattered, taking anywhere from one week to four to make it across the ocean and into your arms. He was always sure to date the letters, helping you keep them organized. His letters took over your nightstand months ago, neatly filed in a box you found. The letters were kept close by and every night you would reread a handful of them until you drifted to sleep, where you often found Bucky again. You always knew your James was a romantic, but you did not realize how poetic he was until these letters.
Cookie,
Oh how I miss you. How I wish I could run my fingers through your hair, whisper I love you in your ear. I keep your picture over my heart. I believe it protects me on these battlefields. Every morning you are the first face I see and at night you are the last. Today I saw a flower, all alone in the middle of nothing. What kind, I do not know, but it made me think of you. It was the most beautiful flower I have ever seen, and it was surviving in the middle of a war. The world around it was turbulent and broken, yet there it was, tall and proud. Just like you through all of this. I miss you babydoll, and pray every night that the next day I will hold you in my arms at last. I love you babydoll.
Forever and always,
James
His letters never spoke about the war, at least not what he was experiencing. He tried to keep them as light as possible, focusing instead on your love. He tried to find the good, and you love that about him, but it was war. You did not expect every letter to be pretty, and it worried you. Hopefully he was talking to his fellow soldiers there...or Steve. Steve got letters sometimes too, though much less frequently than you.
Your favorite letter came after a year and a half of Bucky being gone. Well, your favorite letter up to that point.
Cookie,
I cannot wait until I can call you my wife. If you want complete honesty, I already call you my wife over here. Anyone asks if I got a girl back home I tell them I got the most gorgeous wife back home, beautiful inside and out, and wicked smart. I tell them that you volunteer your time in the hospitals, that you want to be a nurse. I hope you don’t mind I call you my wife. As far as I’m concerned Cookie, you and I are married. I love you with all of me and I believe you love me with all of you. A piece of paper don’t change much, but I still want it for us. I want the declaration. I want it written down in the book of life that you are my wife. I want God to know and I want the butcher to know. Plan the wedding however you want, the day should be everything you have dreamed of and more. I don’t care what it looks like as long as you are happy and there. I’m sure you have yourself buried to your eyes in plans. I don’t know when this war will end, but as soon as I’m home I want to get married then and there. I love you babydoll.
Forever and always,
James
Oh how you wish you could marry that man right now. Knowing he told everyone you were his wife made your heart skip. He never failed to make you feel completely loved, even from about 4,000 miles away.
About a week after you received that letter, which became a nightly read, the letters stopped coming. You heard nothing from Bucky for a week. Two weeks. Three weeks. A month. You tried to stay positive, but after four long weeks that was nearly impossible. This was war. War did not care that you loved this man and prayed every night that he would come safely home to you. War is cruel and cold, loving no one. You would visit Bucky’s family every day on your way home from the hospital. Every time you would knock, and his mother or sister would answer the door. You would open your mouth and start to ask any word from Bucky? And at this point, you barely got the first word out before they would somberly shake their head and let you in. In a way, no news was good news. There was no telegram, no one on their doorstep to give their condolences.
To distract yourself, you and Bucky’s sister Rebecca kept re-planning every detail of the wedding. There were only so many times you could change the flavor of the cake or the flowers. Bucky’s mother had sewn Rebecca’s maid of honor dress and was tailoring your mother’s wedding dress to fit you.
When you went searching through what you and Steve had kept of your parents’ you found the dress, but the veil was missing. On top of not hearing anything from Bucky, this was too much and you broke yet again. Steve found you asleep on the floor, dress in hand, cheeks stained from tears, when he came home from work. The next day you told his mother and Rebecca. Both were quick to console you, and found her own veil for you to use during the ceremony. Bucky’s family really had become your family during this year and a half of him overseas.
After five weeks of not hearing from Bucky, you saw a letter in your mailbox. The envelope was stamped from Germany, your name and address scrolled in his handwriting. That handwriting had never looked more beautiful. It took everything in you to not rip the envelope open. Instead you forced yourself to unlock the door to your apartment and go inside, lock the door behind you, and sit at your desk where you could open the envelope with your letter opener. You needed to protect this little letter, this lifeline to Bucky.
You took a deep breath as you sliced open the top edge of the envelope. Crimson appeared on the corner of the letter as you pulled it out. Your blood. How ironic to injure yourself on the very paper keeping you alive.
Cookie,
I am sorry it has been a while since my last letter to you. I got myself mixed up in a bit of a situation about a month ago.
Your heart stopped, your breath caught in your lungs.
I am alright now babydoll. Now that I think about it, I probably should have opened with that. I am alright. I promise. We were training and I got caught in some friendly fire. They got my arm, of course the one I use to write. They removed the bullet but my arm was useless there for a while. I was pretty out of it on the pain medications as well, otherwise I would have had someone else write the letter for me. Could you tell Mother and Rebecca I am okay? I sent them a letter as well, but just in case theirs is delayed or lost. I told them the same thing in theirs just in case yours was the one missing. I still have a couple minor issues with my arm at times, doc says it is probably nerve damage. But that is a worry for another time. I know my silence must have scared you. I am so sorry. I hope this ends soon and I can come home to you. I love you babydoll.
Forever and always,
James
He is alive. Bucky is alive. You did not bother taking the time to put the letter back in the envelope. You left it on the dining table in case Steve got home while you were still gone. You practically ran to Bucky’s house, banging on the door, manners be damned.
Rebecca answered the door, panic in her eyes.
“(Y/n), are you okay?”
“He’s alive!” Your voice was broken as you gasped for air, trying to catch your breath. “I got a letter today. Bucky is okay.”
Relief flooded her face, along with her mother and father’s who had come to see the reason for the panic.
“Bucky is alive.”
His mother broke down in tears, burying her face into her husband’s chest. Rebecca wrapped her arms around you, pulling you into a hug as she started to cry. Finally, you let your own tears make an appearance. Your James is okay.
Once his family had absorbed the news and everyone seemed to be alright, you walked back to your apartment. Steve should be getting home soon. In celebration of Bucky being okay, you decided to make a cake for after dinner.
You heard the door squeak open before closing and the lock clicked into place.
“Steve!” You practically yelled, resulting in him sprinting to the kitchen.
“Are you alright (y/n)?”
“He’s okay. Bucky is okay. I got a letter today.”
You felt yourself starting to cry again. You washed your hands before picking up the letter, not wanting anything to ruin these beautiful words. Steve took the letter from your hands, needing to read them himself. Soon you saw Steve’s body relax. He unclenched his teeth, shoulders loosening. Still clutching the letter, he pulled you into his chest, one arm wrapped around your shoulders, the other cradling the back of your head.
“Thank God.”
Thank God indeed. You have been mumbling your thanks since you opened that letter.
That night before bed you read the letter over and over, at least fifty times.
I am alright. I promise.
Your eyes got heavy and the letter fell from your hand onto your heart. James, please come home soon.
Nadia laid on the Barton's couch and stared at the ceiling. She had just woken up to the sound of the Barton children running around upstairs. She could hear them shushing each other every now and then when one would make a loud noise. Nadia thought it was cute and knew that Clint and Laura were raising those kids right.
Nadia had to have two surgeries after being shot. One to remove the bullet, which was a success, but Nadia developed an infection. So the doctors had to open her back up and clean it out. The healing process was painful and Nadia yelled at every nurse that came in to see her and ask how she was doing. Pretty much scaring them away. Now, Nadia didn’t mean to act the way she did towards the nurses, they were only doing their jobs, but she was in so much pain. The drugs they gave her did nothing.
Bucky had been her visitor every day. He was there to make sure she was fed properly and that she went on walks to lessen the pain in her abdomen. Bucky apologised for being a dick and getting her into this mess. But Nadia told him that it’s not his fault. The two of them patched things up and got close again. They talked and laughed until the visiting hours were over.
A week after being discharged from the hospital, Steve had pulled her into the conference room and told her that it would be best to go to Clint’s for the time being. Nadia didn’t even protest, she knew she needed the time away to rest more and see her parents.
So that night she was flown out. With only a quick goodbye to Bucky.
While Nadia was away, Bucky couldn't stop thinking about her. Bucky always thought about Nadia, but while she was away, Bucky’s mind was just filled twenty-four seven with her. He’d drift off during meetings or screw something up while doing inventory somewhere. Even before he fell asleep at night, he’d call Nadia and talk to her for a few hours. Just hearing the sound of her voice, it made Bucky feel better.
Nadia enjoyed the phone calls from Bucky. It distracted her mind from the going ons around Clint’s ranch. Especially her mother. Don’t get it wrong, Nadia loved her mother, but her mother was always up in her business. Always asking about whatever came to mind. One day, Laura found Nadia looking in the liquor cabinet.
“Sorry, I can’t stand my mother right now,” Nadia began to say.
“The hard stuff is in the back,” Laura pulled out two glasses and helped Nadia pull the bottle out. “It's just a few more days until you go back.”
Nadia took the shot Laura handed her. “How hasn’t she driven you crazy yet?”
“Who says that she hasn’t?” Laura smiled and took her shot. “Plus the kids are in love with her. But when she isn’t with the kids she’s criticizing my cooking. I’ve had to kick her out of the kitchen several times.” The two of them laughed and took a few more shots before going back out.
Nadia slowly rolled off the couch and winced at the slight pain in both her stomach and shoulder. A soft groan slips out of her lips and soon there are firm hands helping Nadia up.
“I told you that couch was killer,” Clint made sure she was steady. “Even when you have a wound like that. Should have taken one of the kids' beds.”
Nadia stared at the blonde archer. “That wouldn’t be fair,” Nadia patted Clint's shoulder. “Your kids need their beds.”
Clint tried to hold back a laugh and failed. The look in his face pretty much judged Nadia in that moment, “You, Nadie, were injured, Lyla would have understood if you took her bed for the week. So, for this last night, you will be taking Lyla’s bed.” Naida opened her mouth to protest. “Nope, don’t even. Otherwise, I’ll have to call Cap and see if another week here with your parents would be good.”
Nadia glared at the man before her. She couldn’t believe what she was hearing. “You wouldn’t even dare,” Nadia raised her eyebrows. Clint knew that her parents were driving her crazy.
“I’ll start the coffee,” Clint patted her shoulder and walked into the kitchen.
“I think I hate you now,” Nadia called after him.
“You’ll thank me,” Clint called back.
Nadia had only been back at the compound for two hours before getting approached by Fury. He obviously didn’t look happy but then again, Fury never looked happy. Especially when it came to Nadia.
“Can you explain this?” Fury tossed a file to Nadia and it landed on her lap. Nadia opened the file and saw that it was transcripts from the mission she got shot on. “Can you explain why two of my best Avengers were bickering about a one night stand?”
“What is it to you?” Nadia closed the file and handed it back to Fury. “I had a one night stand with Thor and Bucky was obviously jealous. We fought and lost focus of the mission and I ended up getting shot.”
“That’s the point,” Fury dropped the file back on Nadia. “Avengers shouldn’t be sleeping together because of this.”
Nadia stood up and had the file in her hands again. “Does Thor know about this too?” Nadia took two steps towards Fury. “I guess not because no one has heard from him in about a month. So,” Nadia took another step towards Fury and held the file up to his face. “Until he’s been briefed on it and that it’s on paper and ready to sign, I will continue to sleep with teammates.” Nadia flicked her wrist and all the papers from the file scattered everywhere.
Nadia made her way towards the training facility to just sit and relax. When she got in there, Bucky was there sitting down, unwrapping his only flesh hand. “Right where I left you a week ago,” Nadia smiled when Bucky looked up and smiled at her. “Did you not move the entire time?”
“Where else would you find me?” he gave that smile Nadia loved and now it made her blush a bit. “What brings you down here? You look a bit cheerful.”
Nadia made her way towards where Bucky sat and sat next to him. “Well for one, I’m down here because of Fury,” Nadia noticed Bucky’s face when she said Fury. Guess Fury got to him too but she decided she didn’t want to pry into that. “And yes, Bruce finally got my painkillers in so I took what I could for the pain and I'm feeling greater than I have in a week.”
Bucky smiled and placed a hand on your leg. “Well, I’m glad you’re feeling great and that you’re back.” Bucky let his hand linger and then pulled back. “I do want to say something to you.”
Nadia twisted her body to face Bucky and this time, it was her who placed a hand on his leg. She felt every muscle in his left tense up at her touch but she didn’t move her hand. “If you’re going to say sorry for the umptenth time, James Barnes, I will slap you with one of those training mats.”
Bucky laughed a little and covered Nadia’s hand with his metal one. Nadia had felt the metal many times before but for some reason, this time the feeling sent small little shocks of pleasure through her arm. Nadia had to tell herself that she needed to keep her calm. This was just Bucky after all.
“That and, um,” Bucky slowly let his voice trail off but his metal hand also slowly tightened around hers. “You know, you’re the only woman I call Doll.” Nadia’s breath caught in her throat. She wanted to say something but nothing that came to mind would have sounded right coming out of her mouth. “When I saw you that first day, I wanted to say hi but didn’t. Then the days leading up to Starks party, I still wanted to say hi. Steve called me crazy for not doing so, cause you’re so beautiful.”
The words that were coming out of Bucky’s mouth, they were reaching Nadia’s heart. She was frozen in place, in a good way. Letting her heart melt as she let her best friend tell her how he felt. Bucky must have practiced this moment a million times this last week. Nadia felt like she was dreaming and literally took her free hand and dug her thumb nail into her index finger.
Nope, not a dream, she thought
“Over time,” Bucky was still talking. “I started to feel things for you and I memorized whatever I could about you. Like for instance, how you drink your coffee. You only add about an inch of heavy cream to your coffee. Also, you really like musicals. Sometimes, when you’re in your room, I can hear the faint sound of you singing along. And, Nadie, you have the most beautiful voice I ever--”
Nadia pushed her hand free from Bucky’s and grabbed the collar of his shirt and pulled him towards her. Bucky wasn’t taken by surprise one bit, but he didn’t think that this would be Nadia’s response. He placed both hands on the side of Nadia’s face and pressed his lips firmly to hers.
Their lips molded together like they were meant to be. Like it was a missing puzzle piece in both of their lives. Nadia’s hands loosened on Bucky’s collar and slid up and around his neck. Bucky dropped his hands to her hips and pulled Nadia up onto his lap and wrapped his arm around her. Naida gave a mixture of a sigh and moan. The sound was enough to send Bucky into a feral state.
“You have no idea how long I wanted to kiss you,” Bucky whispered as he pulled away. The shine his eyes and smile on his face, it mirrored Nadia’s. “I just pictured myself asking you first.”
Nadia rested her head on Bucky’s and ran her hands through his hair. It was soft and it smelled of cedarwood. She could feel the pounding of her heart and if she could feel it, then Bucky could most definitely hear it. Nadia took a deep breath to help steady it and pulled at her bottom lip with her teeth. Bucky’s breathing just as deep as Nadia’s. The way that her fingers just rested in his hair was soothing and relaxing. He could sit like this forever and never tire of it.
“Sorry I took that moment from you,” Nadia broke the silence and pulled away. Bucky’s hands remained on her hips and Nadia sighed as he started to run his thumbs in circles. Nadia looked to the side.
“Well,” Bucky licked his lips and used a hand to turn Nadia’s face back towards him. “It’s not the end of the world.” Bucky ran his thumb over Nadia’s lips and she instantly felt the faint throb between her legs. She wanted nothing more but to have this man tear her clothes off. “Besides, I wasn’t finished.” Bucky pulled Nadia’s face towards his, catching her lips in between his teeth. Nadia sucked in a soft but soft breath.
“Show me what you got, Sergeant Barnes,” Nadia pulled away and lightly gripped his hair. A low groan came from Bucky's lips. The wetness between her legs was getting thicker and hotter. Nadia needed Bucky to do something or she would do something about it. She needed to scream this man's name, even if the whole compound could hear her. She didn’t care. She’s wanted this man for months.
Bucky quickly stood up and had Nadia in his arms. Her legs instinctively wrapped around his waist where she could feel his rock hard erection pressing through his workout pants and straight into her clothed, wet core. Bucky walked them to the only bathroom in the area, kicking the door shut and blindly locking it.
Bucky set Nadia down on the counter. “I may not be a god,” Bucky pressed his lips to Nadia’s ear. “But I will make you feel so good, you’ll be left wanting more.” Shivers ran down Nadia’s back and she smirked.
“Like I said, Sergeant,” Nadia pulled away and gripped Bucky’s workout shirt tightly in her hands. “Show me what you got.” Each word slowly rolled off her tongue. Nadia let go of Bucky’s shirt and grabbed the hem of hers. Crossing her arms, Nadia ripped the cotton over her head, leaving her blue bra untouched and Bucky staring at her breasts.
After a few minutes, Bucky stepped back and ripped his shirt off. Nadia’s eyes wandered down his muscular and chiseled chest but they didn’t get too far. Nadia slid off the bathroom counter and stopped closer to Bucky. She reached out and touched the scars on his skin that met the metal of his arm. She knew his story, she knew what happened to him but seeing the scars made her heart sink. She leaned forward and kissed the scarred skin.
Nadia then began to pepper sweet, small kisses down around his chest. Bucky’s eyes just watched her. He was in awe that this beautiful woman, one he’s wanted for months, was kissing his bare skin. He wanted to engrain this whole thing in his brain. When she began to kiss down to his stomach, Bucky couldn’t help but let out a small little groan, letting his head drop back.
Bucky felt Nadia’s fingers slip between the elastic of his pants and tug down a bit. Bucky looked down to see her beautiful bright eyes looking back up at him. They were glassed over with lust with a hint of permission to go on. “Go on doll,” Bucky’s voice was husky now. “I’m all yours.”
Within seconds, Nadia had Bucky’s pants and underwear pushed down. Her hand was slowly stroking Bucky’s already hard cock. With each gentle stroke, a small moan and groan would slip through his lips.
Then, without a word or a warning, Nadia took him into her mouth. He was thick and long, the tip of his cock poked the back of Nadia’s throat. Nadia groaned at the feeling of finally feeling him in her mouth. She had dreamt and imagined what it would feel like to bob her head over his cock. She bobbed her head up and down as a slow and agonizing pace and moaned every few minutes.
“Fuck,” Bucky groaned as he felt the vibrations of Nadia’s voice. Bucky’s hand gripped around Nadia’s hair and slowly began to thrust down the back of Nadia’s throat. Nadia groaned and felt the wetness between her legs seep out and onto her underwear. She needed him now.
Nadia pulled back with a pop and stood up. Nadia undid her jeans and shimmied out of them and kicked them to the side. She walked backwards until she hit the cool counter and jumped up there and motioned Bucky to come forward with one finger.
Bucky closed the distance between them in just a few steps. He took his flesh hand and placed it behind her head and pulled her face to his. His kiss was firm and wet. He nipped the bottom of her lip, causing the wetness and ache in her core to become unbearable.
Bucky’s metal hand rubbed up Nadia’s thigh where he squeezed it tightly. Then he took his thumb and rubbed her clit through her underwear making Nadia whine into his mouth. Bucky smiled and pushed the fabric away and inserted not one, but two metal fingers into her.
“Ah, fuck,” Nadia hissed against Bucky’s lips.
“Shh,” Bucky hissed as he slowly pumped and scissored his way around inside you.
It didn’t take long for Nadia to feel her stomach tighten. She began to moan but Bucky kissed her harder to muffle her moans and pushed his fingers deep inside her. Nadia couldn’t contain herself, Bucky was twisting and curling his fingers in all the right spots. Her moans, as much as they were muffled by Bucky's lips, they were getting louder by the second. Nadia's hands flew to Bucky's hair and she gripped it tight as she felt herself tighten around Bucky's fingers.
"Damn, Doll," Bucky growled and used his thumb to rub small circles around her clit. Nadia threw her head until it hit the mirror behind her. “Let’s get you to do that again.” He dove in for her neck and sucked a hard spot on the base of her neck. And just like that, Nadia was squeezing herself around Bucky’s fingers.
“Oh, god,” Nadia breathed out as she felt herself getting closer and closer. Before Nadia could warn Bucky that she was getting close, her body was hit hard with her orgasm. It shook her entire body. Her back arched up and she screamed out as she gripped Bucky’s hair tighter. Bucky continued to finger fuck her through her high until she came down.
Bucky withdrew his fingers and brought them up to his mouth and licked them. Not breaking eye contact with her. Through her post orgasmic haze, Nadia reached for Bucky’s metal wrist and pulled his fingers from his mouth and took them in hers. The taste of her release mixed with metallic had Nadia rolling her eyes to the back of her head.
“I don’t think I've seen anything as hot as this,” Bucky’s low raspy voice sent a shiver down Naida’s back. And with that, Bucky ripped the underwear off Nadia’s lower body and discarded the rest of his pants and underwear. “Tell me you still want this,” Bucky took Nadia’s face and she opened her eyes as he lined his cock up with her entrance.
“I do,” Nadia trailed her hands up Bucky’s chest. “I want you to fuck me and if anyone hears, they will know that it’s James Barnes’s cock making me feel this good.”
Bucky’s lips twitched into a crooked smile as he pushed himself slowly into Nadia. Now, Bucky didn't stretch her as far as Thor had, but Nadia felt every vein rubbing against her and her walls fluttered around him. The two of them groaned at the feeling.
It was beautiful and it felt perfect.
As soon as Nadia was adjusted, Bucky began to slowly thrust in and out as he pulled her lips to his. This kiss wasn’t heated as before, it was deep, passionate and full of emotions. Nadia wrapped her arms around Bucky and drank in this moment. Bucky kissed down to Nadia’s shoulder and started to pick up the pace of his thrusting.
“You...feel...so...perfect,” Bucky grunted softly in between each thrust.
Nadia moaned in response as she felt the tip of Bucky’s cock push at her cervix. Within minutes, Nadia was feeling the familiar tighten in her stomach and she gently dug her nails into Bucky’s back. The action alone pulled a growl from Bucky and he began to thrust harder and deep into Nadia.
“Oh, God.”
Bucky and Nadia froze in place. The coil in Nadia’s stomach loosened and disappeared. She didn’t want to lift her eyes up at the person who entered the bathroom. She knew Bucky locked the door, she watched him lock it herself.
“What? Did someone throw their shit around?”
This voice made Nadia and Bucky look. There stood Steve looking awkwardly down at the ground. Tony peeped his head and his eyes widened at the picture before him. Bucky shifted his body to make sure Nadia was covered more and not too exposed to the men standing in the doorway.
“Huh,” Tony nodded his head and nogged Steve. “Now we know why the door was locked. By the way,” Tony gestured towards the naked forms. “So glad that this happened. Now that sexual tension during every meeting and mission is gone. Just don’t let us find you fucking during missions.” With that Tony left.
Steve, with his head still down said, “Fury is looking for you Nadia. Something about meeting with the President.” Then he was leaving, closing the door behind him.
“Well, that happened,” Nadia leaned back and looked at Bucky. “I guess I shouldn’t keep Fury waiting.”
“Oh no,” Bucky nodded and slowly pulled his cock out of Nadia. Nadia closed her eyes at the emptiness. When she opened them, Nadia saw Bucky picking her clothes up and handing them to her. “Sorry about the underwear.”
Nadia slid off the counter and smiled. “Don’t worry,” she took the clothes from his hands. “I have plenty more you can ruin.”
“I look forward to that,” Bucky pulled Nadia into his arms and kissed her. “Hopefully you’ll let me ruin another pair tonight.”
Wounded
Warnings: kinda angsty I guess? Obviously mentions of weapons and wounds and stuff?
Pairing: Bucky x Reader
You sat most of the night, biting at the tip of your fingernails and still flicking through tv channels anxiously as the sun began to come up out the window.
You always worried when the Avengers went on a mission, they were always your best friends and basically your family but it had gotten even worse since you’d met him.
The day you met Bucky, the real Bucky not the winter soldier, was the day your heart grew ten times bigger and the day your worries grew a thousand times.
Of course, Bucky refused to let you tag along on any missions, always worrying himself that you’d get hurt or killed.
“Bucky, I know you’re in the middle of a mission but it would really ease my nerves if you would just call me.” You sigh into the phone as you leave your ten thousandth voicemail in his box. You knew he never really checked his voicemails or even his phone for that matter but it was the only thing keeping you from reaching literal insanity.
As you stand, you nearly bump right into Wanda in your state of hazy worry.
“Oh sorry Wanda. I didn’t realize anyone else was in the tower. Thought everyone was on mission.” You apologize with a halfhearted smile. She looks at you quizzically for a minute before she responds.
“He will be alright y/n. They all will. From what I was told it is a very simple mission. They should be back soon actually.” She assures you, the tone of strength in her voice keeping you calm.
“I know. I just worry. A lot. Probably a little too much actually.” You admit, subconsciously knawing on your thumb. Wanda swats you’re hand away from your mouth, nodding.
“I understand. But don’t let that worry get the better of you.” She says, holding onto your hand tightly.
“Thanks Wanda.” You say, a wholehearted smile replacing the previous expression you had.
“It’s my pleasure.” She smiles back, giving you a quick hug before she’s walking back out the door.
Shortly after she’d left, you hear a crash coming from the entryway, telling you the team was probably back. You stood quickly and ran over, excited that they were finally back.
As soon as you reached the door, you gasped in horror as Tony and Steve carefully carried a bloody and beaten Bucky through the open doorway.
“Wha- what happened?” You ask quietly, barely getting the words out. You follow behind them as they bring him over to the couch, his body practically limp. You hear his small whimpers and your heart practically shatters.
“He’ll be fine. He’s Bucky. He’s strong.” Steve says, probably more reassuring himself than he is you.
You go over to him, determination coursing through you as you grab a fistful of his shirt and try to get him to look at you.
Normally, you’d check to see if anyone else is injured. But seeing Bucky in the state he’s in sends you into full panic, making any rational thought fly right out the window.
“Steve. What the hell happened?” You demand and he sighs in defeat.
“He got hit with a bullet. He’ll be fine.” He repeats, clearly in a bit of a daze.
“Dollface.” You hear a hoarse voice murmur and your attention is immediately brought back to Buckys pale face. You kneel down onto the carpet, your face barely an inch away from his.
“I’m right here Barnes. I’m not going anywhere.” You whisper, running a hand up and down his arm.
He responds with a very weak smile and you feel tears starting in your eyes.
“Where did it hit him?” You ask no one in particular, looking up at the first person you see which happens to be Tony.
“Was it? I think it was what? The chest? Or the shoulder?” He says unsurely, looking over at Steve for confirmation. Steve nods his head, not meeting anyone’s eyes.
“Which are you nodding for?! Was it his chest or shoulder?!” You snap, looking to Steve.
“It was his shoulder.” He musters monotonously.
“And you didn’t think to take him to a damn hospital?!” You shriek, tears running down your face.
“We couldn’t. He’d end up arrested for being the winter soldier.” Natasha says, causing you to notice her presence.
“Right.” You sigh, looking back to him longingly.
“Doesn’t Fury know someone? Someone who could take care of him at whatever’s left of S.H.I.E.L.D.?” You ask, frantically trying to think of ways to help Bucky.
“He might. Let me call him and ask.” Natasha offers, pulling out her phone walking off into another room to take the call.
You squeeze Buckys hand gently and rest your head on the sofa cushion near his.
A few moments later, Natasha returns to the living room just as she hangs up the phone. Your head perks up hopefully as you look to her for an answer.
“He said they’ll be here as soon as possible so we need to make sure to put pressure on the wound.” She informs and you nod while Steve is quick to grab a rag and press it onto Buckys wound. He moans in protest but you ignore it as you put your hand over it to keep it over the wound tightly.
“As if we didn’t already know that.” Tony scoffs and Natasha kicks him in the shin and glares, telling him to shut up.
You softly push Bucky’s hair out of his face, stroking his stubbly jaw with your thumb.
“He’s gonna be fine. I know he is.” You sigh.
The lot of you sit there stuck in that moment for what feels like forever, waiting for help to get there. Your foot taps anxiously against the carpet in anticipation and worry.
Soon, a knock on the door is followed by a man and a woman, wordlessly rushing to your spot beside Bucky. With slight protests, they pull you to your feet, moving you away from him so they can examine his wound.
They explain what they’ll need to do briefly but you don’t hear a word of it, instead only hearing the ringing from your own ears.
You watch mutely as they pick up his body and place it on the stretcher they brought into the room, wheeling it over to the door.
You get to your feet, going to chase after them but Nat quickly steps in front of you, bringing you to a halt.
“Y/n, let them do their work. You need rest.” She insists.
“But-“ You begin to protest but she raises an eyebrow.
“You haven’t slept since we left. You. Need. Rest.” She argues, the people around you agreeing with simple nods or hums of agreement.
“Fine.” You huff, laying back down on the couch and snuggling into the cushions with a blanket, drifting off into a fitful sleep.
—————————————————-
A few nights later, you wake up late but quickly recover, running around the people spread out on the couch and floor around you and into your room, changing into comfortable clothing. You run back into the living room and grab your keys, eager to get to wherever they’re keeping Bucky.
For the past few days, you weren’t allowed to see him. You were given minimal information and rarely any updates for some reason which frustrated you beyond belief. You’d remained glued to the couch with the phone next to you, just waiting for more information. Everyone in the avengers group had stayed with you, some leaving and coming back from minor missions but all spending every night by your side.
It didn’t do much to ease your nerves but they treated you both like family as always and it warmed your heart immensely.
Because of your stress though, you’d hardly slept any of those nights. You tossed, you turned, you got up and paced but got maybe three or four hours of sleep each night.
When Fury had informed you you’d be able to see him today, you were practically bursting with joy and a small sense of relief.
“Y/n?” Nat asks, not even seeming the slightest bit groggy.
“I need to see him.” You sigh, looking over at her with desperate eyes.
She nods in understanding, walking over without making so much as a creak in the floorboards with ease.
“I’ll drive. Fury sent me the location while you were sleeping.” She explains, instantly in agent mode.
You nod, walking out the door after her and out to the car.
After a short drive, you arrive at a regular hospital. Your eyebrows furrow in confusion as you look over to Nat for answers.
“It was apparently a lot easier than they thought it’d be to get him in. They used an alias and apparently have some sort of contact in the hospital here.” She informs you as the two of you start walking through the parking garage, over to the elevator.
During the entire ride up to the floor, you’re fidgeting, your nerves getting the better of you.
You get out, all but running to the room Nat told you. Once you find the number, you fling yourself into the room, racing over to the bed.
When you look, you let out a breath you didn’t realize you were holding in at the sight of him peacefully sleeping.
You sit down in the chair, reaching over for his hand and holding it in your own shaking ones, never having felt so thankful to feel his pulse on his wrist as your fingers find their way there subconsciously.
You finally notice after a moment of nothing but his breathing and the beeping of the machines to fill the silence that Nat stayed in the hall, giving you a moment with him on your own.
You stare down at your fingers entwined in his own, listening to the steady beeping and biting your lips out of nerves.
“Hey doll.” A voice says from beside you and you’re whipped back to attention, looking over at him with wide eyes.
His soft smile causes a sudden and teary one of your own, giggling through your hiccuping sobs.
“You’re ok.” You cry, head falling onto his chest. He chuckles a little but you don’t miss the wince in pain when you touch his shoulder.
“Sorry.” You murmur, immediately pulling back from him in fear of hurting him.
“It’s alright y/n. It’s only a bullet wound. I’ve been through worse.” He says teasingly but your frown stops him, making him feel immediately wrong about saying it.
“Don’t talk like that. Please.” You mutter, looking down into your lap.
You always hated when he talked about his hydra days. Obviously you let him if he needed someone to talk to but when possible you avoided the subject, hating the trauma it caused him.
“I’m sorry. Just trying to lighten the mood I guess.” He apologizes with a half grin.
“That’s very unlike you.” You tease, wiping the corners of your eyes as he chuckles a little more.
“I shouldn’t be making you laugh, it’ll make it hurt more.” You groan and he shakes his head.
“It’s fine.” He grunts, giving your hand a reassuring squeeze.
You grin over at him until a few moments later, you’re frowning again.
“What?” He asks, looking puzzled.
You lightly smack his metal arm, scowling at him.
“James Buchanan Barnes, don’t you ever scare me like that again!” You scold.
He sighs, knowing it would probably have come to this at some point. He especially knows how upset you are when you use his full name to address him. He hated when you did that.
“You know how I feel about missions. They scare me. Like a lot.” You cry, not meeting his eyes.
“You know they’re dangerous y/n. You knew that before we even started going out.” He sighs, frowning in worry.
“That’s the point!” You exclaim.
Before he can respond, you grumble under your breath angrily as you snuggle up to him as gently as possible on his other side, no matter how uncomfortable the metal arm may be to be cuddled with.
“Just try not to get hurt again, yeah?” You murmur into his chest.
He grins a little, though you can’t actually see it.
“Not that I was really trying to this time, but I won’t. Promise.” He swears, nuzzling his chin into your hair.
You shuffle closer to him, gently wrapping your arm around his torso as his wraps around your waist.
You stay there as long as possible. Throughout the day, people come and go, either visiting with him or checking his vitals or his wound but the one thing that doesn’t change is you, snuggled comfortably up to him, protecting him as much as you’re capable from any other thing that may harm him and swearing to yourself that you always would.
