Hollywood 1969... You shoulda been there! is the tagline for the book Quentin was discussing last week. There was general chat about the history of movie novelisations (their hayday was the 70's) and he and Kim had both brought along some of their favourites. The best bits for me though were when Tarantino was explaining what made a good novelisation and used references to his own book. Obviousely the quality of the writing is important but you need more than just a straight retelling of the film. I'm now a third of the way through and most of what I've read is extra detail or backstory that isn't in the film. QT said he always writes a lot of stuff that never makes it into the film so he already had a lot of this. He also explained that in his films he felt he was good at giving exposition through detail, but in a book you can do this through the character's thoughts, and a particularly good way is to write from the perspective of a minor character. The Spahn Ranch scene for example is written from the perspective of Squeaky; the girl who acts as George Spahn's 'carer'. Quentin finished the evening by reading a couple of sections himself. A slightly surreal experience (especially when he did the voices) but one that added to making it my most memorable film related evening ever. I'm really enjoying the book by the way and highly commend it to any fan of the film. . . . . . . . . . #Tarantino #quentintarantino #onceuponatimeinhollywood #onceuponatimeinhollywoodmovie #onceuponatimeinhollywoodnovel #novelisation #movienovel #movienovelisation #movienovelization #movienovelizations #movienovels #filmnovel #filmnovelization #filmnovelisation #spahnranch #hollywood https://www.instagram.com/p/CThAGzosUFH/?utm_medium=tumblr
